Streszczenie:
Collaborative editing systems (or group editors) allow a geographically dispersed group of human users to view and modify shared multimedia documents, such as research papers, design diagrams, web pages and source code together over a computer network. In addition to being useful tools, group editors are a classic research vehicle and model of interactive groupware applications, based on which a variety of social and technical issues have been investigated. Consistency maintenance as a fundamental problem in group editors has attracted constant research attention. Operational transformation (OT) is an optimistic consistency maintenance method that supports unconstrained collaboration among human users. Although significant progress has been achieved over the past decade, there is still a large space for improvement on the theoretical part of OT. In this dissertation, we are concerned with three problems: (1) How to evaluate the correctness of OT-based consistency maintenance protocols; (2) How to design and prove correct OT-based protocols; (3) What are the consistency correctness conditions for group editing systems in general. This dissertation addresses the above three problems and makes the following contributions: (1) propose a total order based framework including a new consistency model and the associated design methodology. This framework reduces the complexities of the OT design; (2) improve the total order based framework by introducing a natural order based framework. In contrast, this framework removes the requirement of defining a total order that is not necessary to the OT design; (3) establish a generic consistency model and propose the first set of practical design guidelines in OT based on this model.

Streszczenie:
This thesis analyses farmer-state, and farmer-farmer relations in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam, focusing on agricultural transformations in An Giang Province. It does so at three levels: first, at the largest scale, farmer-state relations are explored through the building of common dikes of different heights; second, farmer-farmer relations are examined through farmers' management of flood water within common August dikes; and third, at the smallest scale, the scope for interhousehold diversification in the face of common environmental and economic constraints. Case study fieldwork took place between 2002 and 2007 in four communes using a mixture of inductive and deductive methods. Political ecology at the micro-level provides the overarching conceptual framework, and co-operative water management is analysed using Olson's (1965) and Ostrom's (1990) 'collective action' and 'common pool resources' frameworks. The research aims to contribute to a better understanding of farmer-state relations in the South of Vietnam.Drawing on Kerkvliet's (2005) models of farmer-state relations, an additional model, advocacy relations, existed in the study area, although dialogic and a form of dominantstate relations also existed. Since a period of national food insecurity in the 1980s, related to the failure of state-initiated co-operatives here, farmers retain and exercise leverage against the state by, for example, resisting proposals to raise the height of the dikes. Within common August dikes, farmers act collectively in 'pumping clubs' to manage flood water. August dikes raise production, but reduce the scope for individual decisionmaking. Common high dikes allow farmers to act more individualistically and this accentuates differences in success between households. Paradoxically however, high dikes have also enabled the state to gain control of water management, although it is not clear if this has been done in order to regain political control or to protect the poor and the landless.

These techniques have not only increased the capability of TA, but have also advanced the state-of-the-art of collaborative editing techniques. To facilitate natural and smooth collaboration, this thesis work has contributed a multi-functional workspace awareness framework which is able to reduce the effort for developing workspace awareness features, and to be extended to support new workspace awareness features. Most importantly, this framework is able to deliver correct and precise workspace awareness information in the face of dynamic content and view changes in TA-based systems, which is an innovative feature unavailable in existing techniques.
The development of biorefineries requires integrating and optimizing plants and handling a large number of material flows and unit operations. The development of a process simulator dedicated to this field would thus be of great interest. This is what we intended to initiate by relying on the example of the oxidation of biopolymers by reactive extrusion. Reactive extrusion is characterized by a strong coupling between flow, heat transfer and reaction kinetics. This coupling depends on the desired reactions. We here intended to elaborate aflexible model, being easily integrated into a static process simulator, and enabling to reach agood compromise between the predictive character of the model and the amount of experiments required to adjust model parameters. Therefore, we adopted a hybrid modelling approach combining a flow description based on ideal reactors and continuum mechanics laws. Flow is modeled as a cascade of continuous stirred tank reactors (CSTR) with possible backflow. Flow rates between CSTRs are calculated using physical laws taking into account the operating conditions and geometric parameters of the equipment. Each CSTR is characterized by a filling ratio, which depends on the operating conditions. The calculation of steady-state filling ratio, pressure and flow rates between the CSTRs is achieved by performing a material balance in each CSTR. Material temperature in each CSTR is calculated through a thermal balance. The chemical modification of the material is described using three reactions: the oxidative depolymerization, the formation of functional groups(carbonyl and carboxyl) and the thermomechanical degradation of the biopolymer induced by heating and shearing. The number-averaged and weight-averaged molecular weight of the biopolymer and the oxidant content in each CSTR are computed simultaneously by applying the moment operation to population balance equations. Viscosity is linked to the mean molecular weight. An iterative algorithm enables to couple material balance, thermal balance and reaction kinetics. The experimental data required for model validation were provided by the experimental platform developed at the CVG (Centre de Valorisation des Glucides,Amiens, France) in the frame of the Synthons program. A method was proposed in order to adjust model parameters with a minimal number of experimental data, enabling to assess the predictive character of the model. Once the parameters were adjusted, the reactive extrusion model enabled to reproduce the experimental results obtained with different raw materials, flow rates, screw rotation speeds, and using two extruders with different size and screw configuration. The integration of the reactive extrusion model into a process simulator - the USIM PAC software - enabled to simplify its implementation. This constitutes a promising step in a perspective of process optimization and scale-up, and enables to simulate a reactive extrusion operation within a global plant simulator

Streszczenie:
This doctoral thesis explores the agrarian development in 20th Estonia and the role of family farming during three major agricultural transformations. It consists of four papers and an introductory chapter for which the common departure are the situation appearing in the Estonian farming landscape after the regained independence in 1991. The first three studies analyse comparative aspects on Estonia's interwar experiences with focus on land reform, agricultural co-operation, and agricultural export development. The fourth study focuses on the role of private plots during the Soviet period and the conversion of these into subsistence holdings after 1991. By merging the perspectives in these papers, the introductory chapter explores the impacts and legacies of previous transformations on the post-Soviet agricultural transformation up to 2004. The thesis specifically analyses the long-term effects of perceptions of markets and the role of agricultural production, changes in the agrarian property relations, organisation of agricultural production and co-operation. In analytical terms, this is discussed from the perspectives of continuity and discontinuity. Besides the several societal changes affecting the agrarian property relations in 20th century Estonia, the radical and decisive shifts have also affected markets, trade and economic integration. Since the end of the First World War, Estonia has been quickly thrown between different economic-political systems and legal environments. From the perspective of the small state’s dependence on trade and reliance on a few markets, the upheavals in the early 1920s, after World War II, and not least the fall of the Soviet Union, Estonia’s long-term economic development has been significantly affected. In this context the role of agriculture has changed. Most important, however, this dissertation shows how the idea of small-scale family farming survived throughout the planned economic period and became an indispensable production unit, even though it turned out to be a myth as soon as the Soviet system was dissolved and the exposure to international competition began after 1991.

Abstract : This thesis describes the implementation of corporate culture changes at a Desjardins credit union branch and analyses how the process was achieved while ensuring it was in line with co-operative values and principles in the current context. The research is based on a unique case study for which data was collected in real time over the course of three years of regular observation. The thesis is qualitative in nature and shows the importance of instilling a renewed sense of co-operation among managers and employees, using new metaphors to convey its full meaning. It also stresses the need to better understand the different stages for building a co-operative business culture and provides a three-phrase model for transforming corporate culture within a co-operative business, which adds to the body of work on the topic. Furthermore, the case study provides better information on the crucial role played by the leader and managers and on essential qualities for a successful transition to a co-operative business culture.

Streszczenie:
Abstract A predominant academic question is how and why the development paths of municipalities and regions take certain forms. In recent decades, geographers and economists in particular have investigated the dynamics of how local institutional conditions and their local mobilisation can affect development outcomes and how development is determined by “structural” forces such as state- and EU-based regulations and globalisation of the economy. Thus, the notion that historical sensitiveness and context-dependency are essential factors in local and regional development and growth has gained credence. Then again, municipalities and regions are not “islands” of development but integral parts of complex socio-spatial relations and processes. From this viewpoint, border municipalities and regions are eminently interesting research contexts as they are sites where different scalar political interests, institutional structures, and development discourses are continuously manifested, materialised and contested in the daily practices of local and regional actors. Nevertheless, this thesis argues that the existing mainstream studies investigating the development paths and prospects of border regions and municipalities are, firstly, overly EU-centric and, secondly, have an overly limited perspective on the institutional environment and legacy in which local and regional actors operate. The main attention in this regard has often been on the institutional differences between states and nationalities. In order to understand the development prospects of border areas and the preconditions of transnational regionalisation, municipal planning of border areas needs to be approached not only from the perspective of EU-driven cross-border co-operation and building of “transnational” scale, but more comprehensively. Accordingly, the present research on the Finnish-Swedish border area, which is an internal border area of the EU, takes a more historically and contextually sensitive institutional approach in this regard. Investigating the structural and discursive dynamics related to the institutionalisation of cross-border co-operation as a development strategy in the context of municipal planning enables not only identification of the conflicts and intersections between state-, EU- and local/regional-level development interests and institutional structures, but also provides room for recognising the diversity of the existing interests, strategies and motivations of local and regional actors and different interest groups involved in these institutionalisation processes. This thesis suggests that the concept of policy transfer and problematisation of the dynamics of how and why certain development strategies, policies and discourses become selected, implemented and sustained at the border municipalities offers a fruitful theoretical and political framework for examining the abovementioned issues. Accordingly, the thesis studies the intertwined relationship between local agency and the mobilisation of scalar institutional structures in regional planning and policy transfer processes by applying the Cultural Political Economy approach and strategic-relational theory on institutions (see Jessop & Sum 2013) as theoretical-methodological lenses. The thesis consists of three original research articles that form a scalar and temporal continuum. The empirical research is based on interviews conducted with key municipal and regional actors (i.e. planners, politicians, project managers and entrepreneurs), historical document material reaching back to the 1930s, as well as supplementary policy documents produced at various governmental levels. Both critical discourse analysis and content analysis are used as analysis methods. As the dynamics of municipal planning are reflected primarily against the formal institutional planning system in Finland, the study focuses on the Finnish side of the border — the Finnish Tornio Valley and the Kemi-Tornio sub-region. The results underline that the institutionalisation of cross-border co-operation as a key development strategy has been a long path-dependent process in which policy transfer processes and local mobilisation have become intertwined. While the “large-scale” development follows the Finnish national development — the transition from state-led, topdown politics to a more bottom-up, region-based development model — the investigation of these policy transfer processes also shows that the border location and the mobilisation of both the “border region identity” and the EU’s cross-border co-operation policy discourse have had a marked impact on the development path. Accordingly, they have furthered the development towards cross-border regionalisation. Moreover, border municipalities are challenging the state’s authority and the subordinated municipality-state relation by invoking this development. This development, however, is regionally contested and exemplifies the power relations both between municipalities with/without state border as well as between public and private sector actors. In the end, which development strategies become dominant or discarded in a particular context depends on how different actors and interest groups mobilise their privileged positions in relation to surrounding formal and informal institutional structures, such as municipal autonomy, EU cross-border cooperation funding schemes, trust relations, regional identity, and prevailing norms and customs. This research stands as an illustrative example that it is crucial not to consider these context-specific “soft” matters as somehow secondary to “rational” economic reasoning when investigating courses of action and economic development paths

Streszczenie:
This thesis consists of three studies that discuss and analyse Sweden's immigrant and integration policy from different perspectives. The main aim is to provide an understanding of and try to explain why the goal to develop an equal status and situation for immigrants and refugees in Sweden not has been realized. The first study, which also is a licentiate thesis, investigates national and local immigrant policy. It focuses on the political application in Umeå, a community in the north of Sweden. The second study extends the analysis by investigating interests and values that have dominated in the process which led to the Swedish integration policy of 1997. The third study extends the discussion about shifts in interests and values in Swedish immigrant policy. Its focus is on the recent increase in interest for questions about integration and repatriation respectively. The three studies are also discussed in introductory and summarizing discussions. The integration problems are here discussed from an extensive theoretical and analytical perspective with focus on questions about integration, citizenship and human rights. One main conclusion is that fundamental organisational, social, economical and political problems must be solved before the goals of Swedish immigrant policy can be reached. In addition it shows that Swedish immigrant and integration policy has developed parallel to, and been influenced by similar developments in other European immigration countries. In addition, international agreements on 'immigrants' and 'refugees' legal position have been of great importance in this development process as well. Accordingly a conclusion is that Swedish immigrant and integration policy not can be seen as an isolated Swedish phenomenon, but must be studied in relation to the development in both Sweden and to its international context. The results of the study of Swedish integration policy show that the moral foundation for this 'new' policy is both well informed and ambitious. It deals with the burning need to abandon the former immigrant policy that stigmatized and often segregated the people it was supposed to support. Yet these ambitions have been restricted by world events, Sweden's financial problems and disagreements among politicians, local workers and affected actors about political practice. The study shows that pragmatic economical considerations largely determine the development of this political field. It also shows that the contemporary debate about Sweden's integration policy consists of tensions between different perspectives, values, interests, ideologies and the like. These kinds of tension are revealed in the study of Swedish integration and repatriation policy as well. I show that both arguments for integration and repatriation political efforts can be built upon apparently humanitarian motives. An argument put forward is that two parallel and often conflicting approaches to what is meant by 'humanitarian efforts' for immigrants and refugees have developed. One approach means that fundamental structural problems in society must be solved before conditions for immigrants and refugees can be more similar to those of the majority. The other approach means that Swedish society only can offer them a life with social, economical and political marginalisation and that the best solution is to set them free from this fate. This later approach is discussed and criticized for being ambiguous and for involving moral political dilemmas. An argument put forward is that it is doubtful whether a repatriation policy can be justifed from a moral and human perspective. In the introductory and summarizing discussions I argue in favour of expanded citizenship and expanded human rights as means to promote participation in a multiethnic and multicultural democracy.

For the past two decades, virtually all manufacturing companies in the United States have adopted or are in the process of adopting lean manufacturing. Globalization has resulted in the increased availability of reliable, low cost sources putting greater pressures on traditional US manufacturing companies to reduce costs. The need to successfully transform to lean has only grown in importance in this new operating environment, resulting in renewed focus on such initiatives in the United States. This thesis discusses various approaches to lean manufacturing with reference to specific examples from both academia and industry. In particular, lean transformation efforts in Mitchell Engine Company's* Final Assembly Plant will be provided as a case study. Focus on the JP-3525 fan case assembly cell provides specific examples on how shop floor improvements, assembly cell redesign, and flow can improve process cycle time and decrease variability. The direct result of this work has been a 15% decrease in cycle time and a 100% decrease in variability in the JP-3525 fan case assembly cell. Finally, the role front-line supervisors play in change initiatives will be introduced, discussing the position from both management and labor perspectives. Based on past research, recommendations will be made on how to improve cell leader effectiveness, recognizing these changes require systemic change within the organization.

The most difficult tasks in the Software Language Engineering (SLE) process, are the design of the semantics of a Domain Specific Modeling Language (DSML), its implementation (typically in a form of a compiler), and also its verification and validation. On the one hand, the choice of the appropriate level of abstraction when designing a DSML’s semantics, affects directly its usability, and the potential for its analysis. On the other hand, in practice, not only the compiler’s implementation, but also its verification and validation are performed manually, while having as reference the DSML’s semantic models. The challenge of this research work is to apply a complete model driven software development approach in the tasks of designing a DSML’s semantics, implementing, verifying and validating DSMLs’ compilers. This involves the choice of the most appropriate abstraction levels, and the design and development of adequate tools to support SLE practitioners on these tasks. This thesis reports: i) the design and implementation of formal languages (and associated tools) to support the task of DSML’s semantics design (i.e., DSLTrans and SOS); ii) the automatic generation of DSMLs’ compilers based on translation specifications; and iii) automated validation of DSMLs’ semantic designs based on the analysis of translation specifications. Finally, the approach presented in this thesis is illustrated with the design and implementation of a real life DSML.

Outsourcing maintenance to third-party contractors has become an increasingly popular option for manufacturers to achieve tactical and/or strategic objectives. Though simple in concept, maintenance outsourcing is difficult in execution, especially in a cost-sensitive environment. This project examines the Full Service business under ABB Ltd to understand the key factors that drive the success of an outsourced maintenance operation. We present a qualitative causal loop diagram developed based on the case study of Kinleith Pulp and Paper Mill in New Zealand. The diagram describes the interconnections among various technical, economic, relationship, and humanistic factors and shows how cost-cutting initiatives can frequently undermine labor relationship and tip the plant into the vicious cycle of reactive, expensive work practices. The model also explains how Kinleith achieved a remarkable turnaround under ABB, yielding high performance and significant improvements in labor relations. A case study of Tasman Pulp and Paper Mill provides a contrasting case where success has been more difficult. Results point to the importance of creating sufficient resources ("slack") to implement improvement activities and pace implementation based on pre-existing dynamics on site.

Amgen's Operations division is responsible for the production, release and distribution of commercial and clinical products. Due to industry consolidation, impending competition and revenue impacts, Amgen is facing the need to rapidly improve the Operations division and align different manufacturing sites. In order to achieve these goals, the Operations Improvement group is leading an initiative to bring about a lean transformation of Amgen's operations. This thesis analyzes the initial operational excellence efforts underway within Amgen Operations. The analysis includes an overview of the process by which the continuous improvement methodology and strategy were constructed, the creation of a training curriculum and the initial implementation of the continuous improvement methodology at specific manufacturing sites. In addition, the thesis explores the environment in which this program operates and the cultural and business drivers that support and detract from the efforts. The following conclusions were developed as a result of the analysis of the lean transformation efforts at Amgen. First, company and industry specific nomenclature is essential to make lean principles contextually relevant for the biopharmaceutical industry. Additionally, relevant metrics are needed to facilitate multi-site alignment and drive the desired behavior. Finally, continuous improvement efforts can effectively leverage a science-based culture by applying it to a new business context.

As part of continuing lean transformation efforts at Pratt & Whitney, the Middletown Engine Center has turned its focus on the GP7000 turbofan engine as a target for lean implementation. Projected increases in GP7000 production volume over the next few years, along with aggressive cost reduction targets, are driving the current push to optimize GP7000 assembly and test operations. The internship work described in this thesis was sponsored to achieve three primary objectives: (1) Identify and then implement opportunities to reduce waste and increase productivity for GP7000 assembly and test, (2) determine an optimal configuration for restructuring GP7000 assembly and test operations and create a business case demonstrating the value of the proposed configuration, and (3) organize an implementation team and begin execution of a GP7000 strategy. This thesis details an approach for lean transformation of assembly and test operations in an aerospace company. Additionally, the thesis provides a framework for making difficult relocation decisions and shows how lean transformation can be part of an assembly relocation strategy. As a direct result of this work a lean transformation and relocation strategy is in place for the GP7000 and the implementation of that strategy was underway at the conclusion of the internship. The thesis also describes a comprehensive risk management plan that employs the Operational Risk Management (ORM) process from the U.S. Air Force together with a phased implementation approach.

Streszczenie:
A driving cycle is a representation of how vehicles are driven and  is usually represented by a set of data points of vehicle speed  versus time.  Driving cycles have been used to evaluate vehicles for  a long time. A traditional usage of driving cycles have been in  certification test procedures where the exhaust gas emissions from  the vehicles need to comply with legislation. Driving cycles are now  also used in product development for example to size components or  to evaluate different technologies.  Driving cycles can be just a  repetition of measured data, be synthetically designed from  engineering standpoints, be a statistically equivalent  transformation of either of the two previous, or be obtained as an  inverse problem e.g. obtaining driving/operation patterns.  New  methods that generate driving cycles and extract typical behavior  from large amounts of operational data have recently been proposed.  Other methods can be used for comparison of driving cycles, or to  get realistic operations from measured data.  This work addresses evaluation, transformation and extraction of  driving cycles and vehicle operations.  To be able to test a vehicle  in a controlled environment, a chassis dynamometer is an  option. When the vehicle is mounted, the chassis dynamometer  simulates the road forces that the vehicle would experience if it  would be driven on a real road. A moving base simulator is a  well-established technique to evaluate driver perception of e.g. the  powertrain in a vehicle, and by connecting these two simulators the  fidelity can be enhanced in the moving base simulator and at the  same time the mounted vehicle in the chassis dynamometer is  experiencing more realistic loads. This is due to the driver's  perception in the moving base simulator is close to reality.  If only a driving cycle is considered in the optimization of a  controller there is a risk that the controllers of vehicles are  tailored to perform well in that specific driving cycle and not  during real-world driving. To avoid the sub-optimization issues, the  operating regions of the engine need to be excited differently. This  can be attained by using a novel algorithm, which is proposed in  this thesis, that alters the driving cycle while maintaining that  the driving cycle tests vehicles in a similar way. This is achieved  by keeping the mean tractive force constant during the process.  From a manufacturers standpoint it is vital to understand how your  vehicles are being used by the customers. Knowledge about the usage  can be used for design of driving cycles, component sizing and  configuration, during the product development process, and in  control algorithms.  To get a clearer picture of the usage of wheel  loaders, a novel algorithm that automatically, using existing  sensors only, extracts information of the customers usage, is  suggested. The approach is found to be robust when evaluated on  measured data from wheel loaders loading gravel and shot rock.

Streszczenie:
Purpose – The purpose of this project was to extrapolate knowledge of successful leadership practices, determine what led to and nurtured what became an integrated organizational culture and identify any decisions and/or transformational events that re-defined Moffitt Cancer Center’s (MCC) course or helped propel it to levels far beyond what was originally imagined. The aims of this study were discovery of the foundational factors and events that significantly impacted the creation, growth and evolution of the center, making MCC an institution of transformational change that had achieved state and national prominence. Design – This was an exploratory study guided by a qualitative phenomenological research methodology using an interpretivist approach. Data was derived from twenty one-on-one interviews with people who had the specific knowledge and expertise necessary to obtain a better understanding of the leadership, culture and transformational events that transformed MCC into the institution that it is today. Interviewees included former and current MCC executive leaders, board members and key program directors, as well as the founder and two other former Speakers of the Florida House of Representatives. A literature review was conducted to explore founders, visionary leadership, organizational culture, and transformational organizations. Findings – Key findings included discovery of the factors and events that impacted MCC’s growth and success. The interview process revealed three foundational factors pertaining to visionary leadership qualities of the founder and others, a mission-based culture and four transformational events that set MCC on a course of independence and self-governance. The literature review, with an emphasis on founders, visionary leadership, culture and transformational institutions, revealed useful information to draw comparisons and differences in the historical context of MCC’s growth and impact. Value – MCC, created in Florida statute, existed as a private not-for-profit entity that, statutorily, served as an instrumentality of the state. As such, it had an interestingly distinct role as a hybrid organization that served a public and private sector need; while, very specifically, serving the cancer research and care needs of patients throughout the state and beyond. While the previously mentioned business literary research works are plentiful in the private and public sectors, a gap exists for hybrid organizations such as MCC. Future research could focus on organization founders who did not become part of the executive leadership structure.

On March 23, 2001 Josep Antoni Martín-Fernández from the Dept. of Computer Sciences and Applied Mathematics of the University of Girona (Catalonia-Spain), presented his PhD thesis, entitled "Measures of difference and non-parametric cluster analysis for compositional data" at the Technical University of Barcelona. A short resumee follows:

Compositional data are by definition proportions of some whole. Thus, their natural sample space is the open simplex and interest lies in the relative behaviour of the components. Basic operations defined on the simplex induce a vector space structure, which justifies the developement of its algebraic-geometric structure: scalar product, norm, and distance. At the same time, hierarchic methods of classification require to establish in advance some or all of the following measures: difference, central tendency and dispersion, in accordance with the nature of the data. J. A. Martín-Fernández studies the requirements for these measures when the data are compositional in type and presents specific measures to be used with the most usual non-parametric methods of cluster analysis. As a part of his thesis he also introduced the centering operation, which has been shown to be a powerful tool to visualize compositional data sets. Furthermore, he defines a new dissimilarity based on measures of divergence between multinomial probability distributions, which is compatible with the nature of compositional data. Finally, J. A. Martín-Fernández presents in his thesis a new method to attack the "Achilles heel" of any statistical analysis of compositional data: the presence of zero values, based on a multiplicative approach which respects the essential properties of this type of data.

This thesis defines the strategic utility of Special Operation Forces (SOF), identifies why SOF only provide limited strategic utility, and presents an operational concept for the reorganization, alignment, and employment of SOF to overcome these shortf alls. The thesis is presented in a deductive manner that argues that SOF were designed for strategic purposes, and leads the reader to conclude that reformation must occur for SOF to provide strategic utility and meet their intent. SOF would be in an optimal position to meet their organizational intent by becoming a fifth armed service within the Department of Defense (DoD). Through the creation of mission-based units and a holistic employment strategy, SOF would become a strategic instrument capability of assisting national decision -makers in blending the elements of national power. Finally, the thesis concludes with additional required areas for research to make this concept become a reality, but that are beyond the scope of this study.

In July 2007, the Supply Planning Organization (SPO) decided to begin its Lean journey. Through some analysis the decision was made to take a culture first approach and then follow with the use of Lean tools. The time had come to use Lean tools to help facilitate in the process of both driving business results and Lean culture acceptance. This thesis and research study set to prove the hypothesis that "Lean tools can be as effective in a non-traditional globally dispersed information environment as they are in the traditional plant floor environment". In addition, this research study set out to show that Lean training and implementation can be successfully completed virtually through simple tools such as a PowerPoint presentation, Microsoft Live Meeting, and a telephone. The research study also shows how two mutually exclusive enterprise tools, X-matrix analysis and Value Stream Mapping, point to the same conclusion around effectiveness of metrics within an organization. The core project within this research study is focused on designing the 2010 organizational improvement strategy and structure of Initech's supply planning division through rigorous analysis of existing configurations and opportunities for process improvement and waste elimination. Initech's Supply Planning division is an 800-person group that is globally dispersed across 23 sites. The supply planning organization is responsible for planning the quantity, timing, and location for product build. The current state analysis was completed through the use of direct observation, 1:1 interviews, and value stream mapping tools. This analysis is focused on identifying non-value added activity and identifying opportunities for improvement through simplified connections and streamlined processes. In addition, this process will also drive improvement and help eliminate the current silo's that exist within the divisions. The enterprise focus around process improvement, waste elimination, Lean cultural adoption, and metric effectiveness will help create a more robust and high performing organization.

Transformational leadership (TL) has been linked to successful OCIs through its positive influence on employee commitment and reduced resistance to change, yet little research has been done to identify its association with OCI implementation speed. This study tested TL and change theory and their association with change implementation. It sought to determine if a relationship exists between TL behavior and OCI implementation time. Archival survey and change data from 98 domestic and international manufacturing plants were used to examine relationships between employees' perceptions of leadership communication and trustworthiness and the speed of change. Hierarchical linear regression was used to determine if these behaviors could predict the change speed of an OCI. The study confirmed the association between effective leadership communication and employee trust in leadership, but it found no significant relationship between TL behavior and the speed of change. This finding is inconsistent with the majority of TL literature; however, companies may still benefit from exploring the potential of the study's theoretical concepts to help them improve the speed of organizational change. The limitations of the study were also noted as a potential contributor to the lack of significant findings, and recommendations are offered to reduce validity risk for similar studies in the future.

Streszczenie:
Sweden has the ambition to be the world leading country leveraging the opportunities of digitalization in the healthcare sector. In parallel, the Swedish Research Council highlights that conducting more clinical studies is essential to improve the healthcare. Henceforth, considering the need for increased operational efficiency as an enabler for increased clinical activity, a digital transformation of the industry was identified as a potential catalyst. The study thus utilizes a cognitive work analysis framework to investigate the potential benefits and risks of digitizing the functional operations at a contract management department for clinical studies at a Swedish university hospital. The aim is thereafter to determine the appropriate properties necessary to consider managing a digital transformation. The analysis identified three key benefits from a digitization. 1) transparent data sharing, 2) standardized contract management and 3) efficient operations. These three aspects are currently insufficient at the department hindering the objective of increasing the clinical activity. The study found that a digital transformation would be suitable in order to mitigate these insufficiencies and consequently facilitating the achievement of the objectives. Thereafter, the study found the key properties to consider managing a digital transformation to be interoperability, quality, adaptability and usability. In addition, safety was found critical to be considered in the transformation as the contract management department acts under rigid laws and regulations on ethics and patient security with which digitized processes must comply. The results contribute to the field of cognitive systems engineering. However, the study has limitations regarding the reliability and generalizability of the results. The findings are based on a single case study, which may not be representative for the industry in general nor for university hospitals in particular. In addition, since no actual digitalization effort was performed at the organization during the study, appropriate properties key to consider in the digital transformation are speculative by design. Consequently, it is necessary to study an actual implementation process in future research and whether the proposed considerations are sufficient in order to realize the suggested benefits of such a digitalization.

Model Driven Engineering (MDE) considers models as first class artifacts. Each model conforms to another model, called its metamodel which defines its abstract syntax and its semantics.Various kinds of models are handled successively in an MDE development cycle. They are manipulated using, among others, programs called model transformations. A transformation takes as input a model in a source language and produces a model in a target language. The developers of a transformation must have a strong knowledge about the source and target metamodels which are involved and about the model transformation language. This makes the writing of the model transformation difficult. In this thesis, we address the problem of assisting the writing of a model transformation and more generally of understanding how a transformation operates. We adhere to the Model Transformation By example (MTBE) approach, which proposes to create a model transformation using examples of transformation. MTBE allows us to use the concrete syntaxes defined for the metamodels. Hence, the developers do not need in-depth knowledge about the metamodels. In this context, our thesis proposes two contributions. As a first contribution, we define a method to generate operational transformation rules from transformation examples. We extend a previous approach which uses Relational Concept Analysis as a learning technique for obtaining transformation patterns from 1-1 mapping between models. We develop a technique for extracting relevant transformation rules from these transformation patterns and we use JESS language and engine to make the rules executable. We also study how we better learn transformation rules from examples, using transformation examples separately or by gathering all the examples. The second contribution consists in recovering transformation traces from transformation examples. This trace recovery is useful for several purposes as locating bugs during the execution of transformation programs, or checking the coverage of all input models by a transformation. In our context, we expect also that this trace will provide data for a future model transformation learning technique. We first address the trace recovery problem with examples coming from a transformation program. We propose an approach, based on a multi-objective meta-heuristic, to generate the textit{many-to-many} mapping between model constructs which correspond to a trace. The fitness functions rely on the lexical and structure similarity between the constructs. We also refine the approach to apply it to the more general problem of model matching

The air traffic management system is currently experiencing a significant transformation to provide better quality service and to match the increasing air traffic demand. This transformation requires airlines to retrofit their fleet. However, airlines implement new operating capabilities at different rates resulting in long transition periods in which aircraft with different equipage levels coexist in the same airspace. Mixed equipage environments can increase controller workload and task complexity, limit the operational benefits of new operating capabilities, and deteriorate the overall system performance. This study proposes a three dimensional approach to explore mixed equipage effects: (1) understand cognitive implications for controllers, (2) understand operational implications for users, and (3) understand system level implications. To further investigate mixed equipage effects and to illustrate the proposed approach, this study analyzed the implementation of reduced separation standards in the North Atlantic. An experimental analysis was conducted to study the integration of mixed separation standards. Results show significant human factor concerns. Controllers had higher error rates at very low mixed equipage levels. Results also suggest that a contributing causal factor may have been that participants employed inadequate system abstractions based on their current mental models. Airspace segregation based on equipage levels is recommended in the North Atlantic to alleviate controller cognitive limitations and ensure incentives for equipped aircraft. Segregation can facilitate the transition to reduced separation standards.
(cont.) A preliminary estimation of the operational benefits that segregation could offer to equipped aircraft in the North Atlantic was performed. We developed a simplified model of the jet stream and its operational cost impact and contrasted the results with a statistical analysis of actual North Atlantic flight times. It was found that the model made optimistic predictions of flight time reduction. Based on the statistical analysis, the incentive for equipped aircraft in a segregated environment in the North Atlantic was estimated by a gain of 4 minutes. This figure is a preliminary estimation and further analysis with larger data samples is required to validate it.

This thesis investigates the role of research institutions in Germany in transforming scholarly publishing from subscription to Open Access in the field of scientific journals. Open Access transformation aims to overcome the traditional subscription model to further innovative methods of digital scholarly communication. The study examines the options open to higher education institutions and research performing organizations for shaping the Open Access transformation. The thesis presents a description of these options in the areas of strategy and communication, services and infrastructures, business relations with publishers and cooperation. Then, the implementation of these options in practice was analyzed. For this purpose, a survey was conducted among 701 academic institutions in Germany. The response rate of 403 responding institutions (57.49%) can be considered very positive. This survey, which is probably the most comprehensive on the subject to date, shows that higher education institutions and research performing organizations in Germany have so far implement-ed only a few options for promoting Open Access. While the distribution of Open Access repositories is positive, the handling of Open Access publication charges and the associated monitoring of publication costs are still at the beginning. The results of the survey indicate a high need for action. The presented quantitative survey closes the gap of missing data on Open Access in Germany. Based on this new dataset, the study formulates recommendations for further engagement with the Open Access transformation at research institutions in Germany. One focus is on activities that arise in the area of academic libraries.

Streszczenie:
An understanding of the behaviour and management of the supply chain is essential to gain and maintain viable, competitive commercial outcomes. In particular E-business technologies are revolutionising the fulfilment components of the supply chain by allowing online transactions, fast response, wide spread geographical customer bases and virtualisation of organisations through tight alliances. These new pressures, and the logistics and transport industry's responses to them, have lead to a new term for traditional fulfilment organisations: e-fulfilment providers. The aim of this thesis is to examine the initiation and growth of this phenomenon, with the primary objective of determining what drives fulfilment to this new form. In so doing it has concentrated on four specific topics; how is e-fulfilment best defined, what is transforming it, what are the causes of that transformation, and based on the characteristics of the phenomenon, what are the strategies for achieving sustainable competitive advantage in this new area? To address these topics the thesis quantitatively analyses publicly available data from an extensive five-year survey of UK businesses offering outsourced fulfilment solutions specifically to e-businesses, many of them online retailers. The initial data analysis is followed by a qualitative analysis of 6 Australian cases to triangulate conclusions derived from the initial stage and to further address the proposed research questions. The study produced the following findings and outcomes: • A definition of e-fulfilment based on the presence of 13 core potential capabilities and a model showing how these interact. Such a definition provides a basis for comparisons with other. supply chain-related research projects, and also provides a practical benefit to industries in identifying the characteristics of their competitors and customers: • Development of a new technique for quantitatively assessing relative transformation of fulfilment capabilities, with practical application as a benchmarking tool; • An explanation for transformation of fulfilment capabilities based on a metamorphosis from physical to knowledge-based capabilities. The high value of knowledge in the e-economy is a popular concept and has generally been applied to businesses as a whole. In this thesis, in addition to the whole business, the phenomenon is examined quantitatively from individual activities the business undertakes, and also for the industry as a whole; • A conclusion that transformation is substantially the result of tactical activities undertaken by e-fulfilment competitors as they respond to online retailers' desires to fast track their business maturity (and in tum their own competitiveness). While there is a widespread academic acceptance that business changes are the result of long term planning, this thesis shows how this industry works contrary to that view. For managers in e-fulfilment businesses, the study provides support and specific direction for a tactical approach to conducting business; • A model to explain how, at a company level, old capabilities are transformed or shed from e-fulfilment companies' portfolios, and new ones adopted and retained. Such a model explains why companies' portfolios of capabilities are us they are, and provides a paradigm that businesses can use to evolve their business’s capabilities; • A model to show how the e-fulfilment industry is evolving based on new and transformed capabilities. This model provides a specific mechanism which explains how changing capabilities in e-fulfilment businesses shapes the market and how the (reshaped) market feeds these changes back as new requirements. Such an interaction between provider and customer is tacitly accepted in much of the academic literature but the dynamics of specific cases are not so readily found. At a practical level, the model has potential for showing businesses how to position for future customer expectations. Future research opportunities suggested by this research include developing transformation measurement to include other supply chain capabilities, undertaking ongoing surveys to track the continuing evolution of e-fulfilment providers and industry, and further developing the models provided in this thesis. Concepts and sections of this study can also be used to develop practical tools for the e-fulfilment (and potentially other supply chain-based) industries. These include further development of transformation measurement into a practical benchmarking instrument, analysis of the relative effectiveness of the portfolio of business capabilities, and development of lead indicators of customer expectations and industry direction.

Streszczenie:
To remain competitive in a global market, many organizations are transforming their operations from traditional management approaches to the lean philosophy. The success of the Toyota Production System in the automotive industry serves as a benchmark that organizations continually seek to emulate in search of similar results. Despite the abundance of lean resources, many organizations struggle to attain successful lean transformation. To facilitate investigation of the failure mechanisms and critical success factors of lean transformation, this dissertation addresses the following research questions: (1) Why do transformations from traditional organizational philosophies to lean fail? (2) What are the critical factors for lean transformation success? (3) What is the role of an organization’s human resource performance management system during the lean transformation journey? This dissertation utilizes a multi-method, multi-essay format to examine the research questions. First, managers from organizations in various stages of lean transformation are interviewed to establish a foundational research framework. Subsequently, a theoretical model is empirically tested based on data gathered from a survey of industry professionals with expertise in lean transformation. Data analysis techniques employed for this dissertation include: Partial Least Squares (PLS) regression, case descriptions, and case comparisons. Very few studies of lean transformation investigate behavioral influences and antecedents. This dissertation contributes to practitioners and researchers by offering a refined understanding of the role that human resource performance management can play in the overall lean transformation process. In an effort to characterize organizational outcomes resulting from lean transformation, this research introduces a new construct, Lean Transformation Success, to the literature.

Streszczenie:
Small businesses in the United States experience a high rate of failure. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to identify and explore consistent strategies small business owners in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania used to lead successful companies. Transformational leadership theory formed the conceptual framework for this study. A mixed purposive sample of 20 small business owners participated in semistructured face- to-face and telephone interviews. Each of the participants possessed a minimum of 3 years of successful business operation and employed fewer than 500 individuals. Using Moustakas' modified van Kaam analyses, 6 main themes emerged: characteristics and experiences, leadership behaviors, managing operations, managing employees, employee behaviors, and achieving success. The study findings highlighted the need for small business owners to nurture the leader-follower relationship to inspire and motivate employees. Further, the results indicated the importance of utilizing integrated business practices to influence employee and business performance. The findings in this study promote positive social change by identifying strategies to empower nascent and existing entrepreneurs. Small business owners can apply these results to improve the leader- follower relationship within their organizations, and boost overall business success.
