Definitions of openness and open education abound, but with so many, how can we use them effectively to explore the openness of assignments, activities, classes, or programs? Open Learning Experience Bingo is a game that a group of collaborators have created to give people a way to surface and discuss the many different ways that educational experiences can “open” beyond traditional practices. Each bingo card includes boxes containing possible “ingredients” in a learning experience, and radiating from the center of each box, “dimensions” of openness along which an ingredient might be opened. You “play” bingo by reading or hearing about a learning experience and marking areas on the bingo card that you think the experience opens. The game incorporates broad concepts of openness and seeks not to measure the openness of learning experiences, but to identify and spark discussion about areas in which experiences are opening — or might be opened further. As artifacts, completed bingo cards display a sort of “heat map” of openness that can be used to compare and contrast bingo evaluations of various learning experiences.

Openness to experience—the enjoyment of novel experiences and ideas—has many connections to cognitive processes. People high in openness to experience, for example, tend to be more creative and have broader general knowledge than people low in openness to experience. In the current study, we use a network science approach to examine if the organization of semantic memory differs between high and low groups of openness to experience. A sample of 516 adults completed measures of openness to experience (from the NEO Five–Factor Inventory–3 and Big Five Aspect Scales) and a semantic verbal fluency task. Next, the sample was split into half to form high ( n = 258) and low ( n = 258) openness to experience groups. Semantic networks were then constructed on the basis of their verbal fluency responses. Our results revealed that the high openness to experience group's network was more interconnected, flexible, and had better local organization of associations than the low openness to experience group. We also found that the high openness to experience group generated more responses on average and provided more unique responses than the low openness to experience group. Taken together, our results indicate that openness to experience is related to semantic memory structure. © 2018 European Association of Personality Psychology

Awe is the emotion experienced when people confront stimuli so vast and novel that they require accommodation. Dispositional awe, in contrast, captures individual differences in the tendency to experience awe. Previous research has found that state awe could predict life satisfaction; however, no study has focused on the indirect effects of dispositional awe on the relationship between personality traits and subjective well-being. Previous studies have found that both openness to experience and extraversion were significant predictors of subjective well-being. Both openness to experience and awe involve cognitive flexibility. Awe can also arise from engaging in social events. Previous research has found that those who are higher in dispositional awe tend to be more extraverted and open to experience. Therefore, the main purpose of this study is to test the mediating role of dispositional awe among openness to experience, extraversion, and subjective well-being. To test this hypothesis, a total of 332 Chinese college students were invited to complete an anonymous survey using a cross-sectional design. The results of structural equation modeling showed that openness to experience and extraversion predicted higher levels of dispositional awe, while dispositional awe predicted higher levels of subjective well-being. Moreover, dispositional awe mediated the effects of openness to experience and extraversion on subjective well-being. The findings of this study suggest that openness to experience and extraversion may invite more experiences of awe and thus promote subjective well-being.

We investigated whether NEO-PI-R Openness to Experience (Costa & McCrae, 1992) and its six facets could be identified in the natural trait lexicon. To represent the NEO-PI-R Openness, a list of 113 items was selected from a lexically derived trait list developed for the eight-factor trait model of De Raad and Barelds (2008). We used ratings from two samples. The first (N=271) filled out the lexical Openness scales, the NEO-PI-R Openness scales, and scales measuring the eight-factor model. From the second sample (N=1,466), ratings were used to analyze the lexical Openness scales. Correlations between the eight-factor scales and the two sets of Openness scales indicated that Openness scales are fairly covered by the eight factors, except for the Ideas and Values facets of the NEO-PI-R. The lexical Openness scales correlated well with the NEO-PI-R Openness scales. Openness to Experience and its six facets were identified in the natural trait lexicon, but exploratory factor analyses did not support the six-facet structure of the NEO-PI-R Openness, neither did they lead to a similar six-facet structure across samples. Moreover, it did not consistently support a proposed two-facet structure emphasizing internal openness (fantasy, aesthetics) and external openness (ideas, change).

The personality trait of openness has been shown to contribute to a person’s ability to function effectively. Additionally, scholars have suggested that openness to experience and foreign language experience were related to music preference. Extending from earlier scholarship, this study examined the relationship between openness to experience and the various types of musical and language experiences reported by undergraduate music majors in Turkey and the United States. Participants ( N = 380) were surveyed using the Openness to Experience domain of the NEO-PI-R and an author-designed survey with questions about participants’ musical backgrounds and interests, foreign language abilities, age, and sex. Results showed that U.S. students rated significantly higher in four of the five dimensions of the Openness domain than their Turkish counterparts (Wilks’λ = .57; F(5, 374) = 55.37, p < .001). Factor analysis results showed that (a) experiences in foreign languages, (b) listening to Turkish traditional, pop, and folk music, and (c) listening to American (pop and folk) and Western classical music cumulatively explained 68.49% of the variance in openness. Correlation analyses suggested that listening to Western classical, American folk, and American pop music was associated with higher openness scores, and listening to Turkish traditional, folk, and pop music was associated with lower openness scores. Additionally, the number of foreign languages participants studied correlated with four of the dimensions. Results suggest that both groups could benefit from increased, broader, and deeper exposure to different musical genres from diverse cultures.

The relationship between the personality trait of openness to experience and problem solving ability in environments offering various levels of informational support in the form of analogous problems was investigated using 173 participants. I suspected the strongest positive relationship in an environment offering moderate support and that individuals who were high on openness to experience would be likely to see that previous presented information was analogous in nature. There was no relationship between penness to experience and problem solving ability as a function of the environment or in general. However, students given a high level of support solved significantly more problems than those participants receiving no support. Also, more students solved the problems when they saw an analogous connection between the experimental and the demonstration problems. An implication may be that problem solving ability can be taught using analogies, if the information is complete and students are able to determine the relevance to future problems.

This study addresses a specific gap in research concerning personality type and aesthetic preference. The goal of this study was to assess the following question: is there a positive correlation between an enjoyment of atonal harmony and the personality trait dimension known as “openness to experience”? A survey was crafted, and a number of musical pieces with various degrees of tonality and atonality were composed for this study. Respondents of the survey answered a personality test, listened to the musical pieces and ranked their enjoyment of them. What was found is that not all people who are open to experience enjoy atonal harmony, but a majority of the enjoyers of atonal harmony are open to experience. Potential avenues for future research are discussed, including how knowledge of the relationship between music and the mind can help composers and music theoreticians, as well as game developers.

This study seeks to examine the relationship between personality variables and pain perception ability. Specifically this thesis hypothesises that the Intuitive psychological type (rooted in Jung's theories of psychological type) will be effective at detecting faking of physical pain. Additionally, this thesis hypothesises that those scoring highly on Openness to Experience, as well as those rating as extraverts and those who rate high in emotional intelligence, will be more accurate at pain-faking detection than individuals who do not demonstrate these personality traits. It is also hypothesised that participants rating high in Machiavellianism will be accurate in detecting pain deception. In addition, it is speculated that a gender factor will exist in the ability to detect pain deception. In the first study, the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI; Myers & McCaulley, 1985) and the NEO Five Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI; Costa & McCrae, 1992b) are used to measure participants' intuition level and openness to experience (as well as extraversion), respectively. In the second study, the Mayer Salovey Caruso Emotional Intelligence Test (MSCEIT; Mayer, Salovey & Caruso, 2002) and the Psychopathic Personality Inventory (PPI; Lilienfeld & Widows, 2005) are used to measure emotional intelligence and various psychopathy-related traits (including Machiavellianism), respectively. The stimuli presented are videotapes of facial expressions of pain, in which individuals display either genuine or faked physical pain. The first study's findings support the hypotheses that Intuitive and Open individuals are accurate at pain judgment, with Intuitive and Open females in particular displaying relationships with accuracy. Additionally, males categorised as 'Thinker' types, as well as those low in neuroticism predicted accuracy in pain judgment. However, the hypothesis that extraverted individuals would be more accurate at detection was largely unsupported. In the second study, the hypotheses that overall emotional intelligence and overall psychopathy would predict accuracy were generally unsupported. It was discovered, however, that particular subscales of the emotional intelligence measure such as the 'Changes' task were predictors of accuracy in pain judgment. The Machiavellianism subscale of the psychopathy measure was indeed a predictor of accuracy for male participants. In addition, other subscales of the psychopathy measure that predicted accuracy included Blame Externalisation, which had an inverse relationship with accuracy, as well as 'Fearlessness' in female participants. The significance of the study findings are discussed in terms of application to the realm of deception detection, as well as its relevance to the medical field in particular.

In this thesis, I argue that earlier Kantian conceptualism, the combined view of the structure and content of perceptual experience that John McDowell recommends in his writings that culminate in Mind and World, is ostensibly similar to Kantian structurism, the combined view of the structure and content of perceptual experience that Nelson Goodman recommends throughout his writings. Whereas McDowell thinks that Kantian conceptualism puts us in a position to conceive experience as openness to the layout of reality, Goodman thinks that Kantian structurism leaves us in the position of having to conceive experience as confinement to ways of describing whatever is described. I argue that Goodman's view implies an objection to McDowell' s earlier view of the structure of experience. I combine Goodman's objection with Donald Davidson's objection to McDowell's earlier view of the content of experience to form the Goodman-Davidson objection, an objection to McDowell's earlier view of the structure and content of experience. I argue that later Kantian conceptualism, a new view of the structure and content of perceptual experience that McDowell recommends in his writings after Mind and World, is less vulnerable to the Goodman-Davidson objection, and I reinforce this by arguing that McDowell's later Kantian conceptualism is Rot vulnerable to familiar objections to earlier Kantian conceptualism by Michael Friedman and Christopher Peacocke. I argue that later Kantian conceptualism is underwritten by a different view of the relation between the conceptual and the propositional than earlier Kantian conceptualism. I argue that McDowell's later Kantian conceptualism earns the right to reject the confinement imagery of Goodman and Davidson, but it does not entitle McDowell to the openness imagery of Mind and World.

Openness to experience is one of the least useful personality predictors in the workplace. The present study tested the notion that openness to experience would be a more effective predictor of tenure and turnover intention if openness to experience was separated into two sub-factors. We used a total sample size of, N = 96, participants, which was analyzed both as a whole and separately, segmented by students (n = 51) and working adults (n = 45).

The present study was unable to show that the sub-factors of openness to experience were more effective predictors of turnover intention and tenure. Implications of the evidence in the present study are discussed with the conclusion that openness to experience, at the factor and the sub-factor levels, is a weak predictor in the workplace.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Career management has received a significant amount of research attention because of its known effects on important work-related outcomes such as organisational commitment (De Vos, Dewettnick & Buyens, 2007). However, the modern world of work has brought fresh challenges for both individuals and organisations when it comes to the management of careers. Rapid economic, technological and societal change imply that, on the one hand, organisations face the challenge of retaining and motivating talented employees through the judicious use of career management systems. On the other hand, these influences indicate a growing awareness of the individual‟s responsibility for career development. However, the way in which individuals respond to organisational initiatives through their work-related attitudes is not well known. Despite previous research that has successfully investigated the relationship between career management and organisational commitment, the possible role that individual differences may play in this regard has received scant research attention. This research study firstly investigates the direct relationships between career management (i.e., both individually and organisationally driven activities) and affective organisational commitment, and secondly, it aims to explore the role of individual differences in this process by examining the moderating role of personality (in the form of openness to experience) in this relationship. For this purpose, quantitative data were collected by means of a survey questionnaire administered to a South African public sector organisation (N = 311) and analysed with correlation and moderated multiple regression analysis to test the hypothesised relationships. The results indicated that employees‟ perceptions regarding the organisation‟s career management activities influence whether individuals initiate internally or externally oriented career self management activities. Where respondents perceived receiving high levels of organisational career management, they also reported increased organisational commitment. More committed individuals, on their part, were found to be more likely to engage in internally oriented individual career management and less likely to practice career management activities aiming at leaving the organisation. Results showed that openness to experience did not moderate the relationship between organisational career management and commitment. However, openness to experience did moderate the effect of commitment on individuals‟ career self-management activities (both internally and externally oriented activities). The implications of these results are discussed and limitations of the present study, as well as recommendations for future studies, are presented.

It is a well-known fact that organized crime has developed into an international network that, spanning from the simple ‘grave diggers’ up to powerful and wealthy white-collar professionals, makes use of money laundering, fraud and forgery. This criminal chain, ultimately, damages and dissipates our cultural identity and, in some cases, even fosters terrorism or civil unrest through the illicit trafficking of cultural property.The forms of ‘possession’ of Cultural Heritage are often blurred; depending on the national legislation of reference, the ownership and trade of historical and artistic assets of value may be legitimate or not. Criminals have always exploited these ambiguities and managed to place on the Art and Antiquities market items resulting from destruction or looting of museums, monuments and archaeological areas. Thus, over the years, even the most renowned museum institutions have - more or less consciously - hosted in their showcases cultural objects of illicit origin. Looting, thefts, illicit trade, and clandestine exports are phenomena that affect especially those countries rich in historical and artistic assets. That includes Italy, which has seen its cultural heritage plundered over the centuries ending up in public and private collections worldwide.This edited volume features ten papers authored by international experts and professionals actively involved in Cultural Heritage protection. Drawing from the experience of the Conference Stolen Heritage (Venice, December 2019), held in the framework of the NETCHER project, the book focuses on illicit trafficking in Cultural Property under a multidisciplinary perspective.The articles look at this serious issue and at connected crimes delving into a variety of fields. The essays especially expand on European legislation regulating import, export, trade and restitution of cultural objects; conflict antiquities and cultural heritage at risk in the Near and Middle East; looting activities and illicit excavations in Italy; the use of technologies to counter looting practices.The volume closes with two papers specifically dedicated to the thorny ethical issues arising from the publication of unprovenanced archaeological objects, and the relevance of accurate communication and openness about such topics.

As members of the interdisciplinary palliative care team, nurses bring specialized competence and expertise gained through education, credentialing, and experience. With close to 19.4 million nurses globally, nurses have a tremendous potential to reform health care and ensure quality care for seriously ill patients and their families. Through the integration of empirical, aesthetic, personal, and ethical knowledge at the generalist or advance practice levels, nurses reshape societal perspectives regarding illness, dying, and death. By virtue of their numbers, experience, education, time spent at the bedside, and insight into the lived experiences of patients and families, nurses have the potential to play a prominent role in as public health advocates for palliative care at the local, national, and global level.

“Interdisciplinarity and the Student Voice” seeks a richer understanding of the student experience in encountering interdisciplinarity at the undergraduate level and explores the psychology of interdisciplinary education. The student experience of the interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences BASc degree at University College London is examined, using 13 extended semistructured interviews. Students are asked questions that encourage them to reflect on the interdisciplinary nature of their program and their relationship to interdisciplinary learning. Themes of openness, creativity, bridging, and perspective-taking emerge. In this chapter, connections are made between these themes and the theory and practice of interdisciplinary education as well as the recent study of metacognition. The student voice is seen to substantiate current ideas of the value of interdisciplinary education from a number of perspectives and to suggest further research.

As a result, end users are faced with a variety of interfaces which they need to learn and use in a short period of time. The motivation to learn a new interface is subject to many variables most importantly is level of computer competencies, and openness to experience. The aim of this study was to explore end-users’ overall computer competencies, competencies using software with graphical interfaces and openness to experiencing new software interfaces. In a controlled experiment, participants were asked to perform five tasks using an image editing icon based interface software for the first time. We identify possible personality trait construct in modeling better interfaces.

The role of architecture in hospitals is a sensitive topic; the prominence given to the programmatic requirements has led to disregard of the in-between function of waiting identified as the user experience in the recovery process. Healing, in other words cure means a state of physical & mental wellbeing that a patient experiences in a hospital. It’s a waiting process between the time of treatment & recovery. The waiting experience in Sri Lankan public hospitals is critical because spaces are designed only prioritizing standards while little consideration is given to the impact of local contextual parameters that generate familiar user experiences. This research investigates the impact of design options derived through principles abstracted by vernacular architecture elements on the waiting experience of patients in healthcare facilities. Vernacular elements of identification of centre and openness, articulation of transition space & domestic scaled spaces was used to interpret design options that can be adapted to reorganize the waiting scenarios of hallway, outpatient, and inpatient waiting spaces. The research further investigate how they will help alleviate the user experience of waiting and increase wellbeing.

Over a product lifecycle, many engineering tools are used to create computer-based models that need to interact. This poses interoperability problems because of the conflicting formats of the models and differing scopes of the tools. One proposed solution is an open standards-based product lifecycle management (PLM) framework. However, the use of open standards is hindered by the lack of knowledge regarding their actual and potential usage in current engineering processes. To overcome this hurdle and evaluate the opportunities and extent to which open standards can be used in such PLM frameworks, we develop three metrics for degree-of-openness of engineering information: compatibility, coverage, and completeness. To demonstrate the usefulness of the proposed metrics, we assess circuit board design information that is transferred between native models of an electronic CAD system and the STEP AP210 standard (ISO 10303-210). This preliminary experience shows that each of the three useful metrics provides a limited aspect of degree-of-openness, and the combination of these metrics provides a single more holistic degree-of-openness indicator.

<p>This pedestrian and cycle bridge spans the river in Eskilsuna connecting the historic, industrial area of Munktellstaden with the town centre, forming part of a rehabilitation of the area. The bridge was completed in 2016 on behalf of the City of Eskilstuna. The final design was chosen from three alternatives: the Landmark, the Industrial and the Transparent. All three options proposed were of steel, and all designs had to provide a 4.5m free deck width, maintain an unobstructed navigation channel of 5.0m wide by 3.35m high and a maximum slope of 5%. The Landmark proposal was an asymmetric cable stayed bridge with a 27m high, A- shaped, inclined steel pylon located on one bank with two planes of cables towards the steel deck and one plane of cables towards the back anchorage. The Industrial proposal was a variable height optimized truss , inclined outwards to provide a sensation of openness to the bridge user. The design finally chosen by the client was the Transparent. This bridge, unlike the other two, has two supports within the river that allows for a very slender deck. There is a central, low arch spanning 32m and an overall length of 65m. The arches are formed from two inclined box sections which are slightly curved on plan towards the supports. The railing is made up of a series of thin, steel plates connected via a stainless-steel handrail. The overall effect of transparency thus allows for a largely unobstructed view along the river. Due to the slender deck section a detailed dynamic analysis was carried out to check for possible pedestrian-induced vibrations.</p>

Our study’s main object is travel anthropology, the branch of science that studies the history and nature of man, socio-cultural space, social relations, and structures by gathering information during short and long journeys. The publication aims to research the theoretical foundations and genesis of travel anthropology, outline its fundamental principles, and highlight interaction with related sciences. The article’s defining objectives are the analysis of the synthesis of fundamental research approaches in travel anthropology and their implementation in journalism. When we analyze what methods are used by modern authors, also called «cultural observers», we can return to the localization strategy, namely the centering of the culture around a particular place, village, or another spatial object. It is about the participants-observers and how the workplace is limited in space and time and the broader concept of fieldwork. Some disciplinary practices are confused with today’s complex, interactive cultural conjunctures, leading us to think of a laboratory of controlled observations. Indeed, disciplinary approaches have changed since Malinowski’s time. Based on the experience of fieldwork of Svitlana Aleksievich, Katarzyna Kwiatkowska-Moskalewicz, or Malgorzata Reimer, we can conclude that in modern journalism, where the tools of travel anthropology are used, the practical methods of complexity, reflexivity, principles of openness, and semiotics are decisive. Their authors implement both for stable localization and for a prevailing transition.

We study the role of multinationals (MNCs) in facilitating firm-level and aggregate structural transformation. Using a stylized model of multinational production and trade, we show that an inward multinational liberalization in the manufacturing sector raises employment in host country firms, and decreases manufacturing employment, while also raising services employment, in the parent firms. We also show the conditions under which aggregate structural transformation occurs. We test the models firm-level predictions by using confidential microdata from Japan. We study the response of Japanese MNC parents and their affiliates in China to an exogenous change in China's openness to foreign direct investment (FDI). We find that in industries where inward FDI was encouraged, Japan MNCs' affiliates in China experienced increases in their employment. We also find that MNC parents in the encouraged industries experienced decreases in home country manufacturing employment and increases in home country services and R&D employment. Finally, using microdata for several advanced and middle-income countries, we decompose the change in overall manufacturing employment shares into MNC and non-MNC components. We find a significant role for MNCs across all countries, suggesting the mechanism we highlight is an important global driver of structural transformation.
