Streszczenie:
Onodi cell mucoceles are rare entities that can cause devastating ocular complications if not treated promptly. Delays in the diagnosis are possible because of the wide range of differential diagnoses of unilateral retrobulbar optic neuropathy. We describe a new case of Onodi cell mucocele in a 39-year-old woman, and we present a comprehensive review of the literature on this entity. To the best of our knowledge, no review of Onodi cell mucoceles has been previously published. Our review found that 69% of patients with an Onodi cell mucocele experienced an improvement in vision after surgical decompression. The vast majority of these patients underwent endoscopic decompression; the timing of surgical decompression did not appear to affect outcomes in terms of vision. Onodi cell mucocele requires a high degree of clinical suspicion for diagnosis and a multidisciplinary approach to management that involves primary care physicians, ophthalmologists, and otolaryngologists. Early surgical treatment via an endoscopic approach is recommended for most patients, regardless of the duration of their ophthalmologic signs and symptoms.

A closed-form expression for the N-loop contribution to the generating functional can be written down using the heat kernel [Formula: see text]. If [Formula: see text] where Aμ and V are functions of the background field, then by using quantum-mechanical techniques, this heat kernel can be expanded in powers of the background field, allowing one to compute Green's functions. We demonstrate that one can also employ to this end a distinct functional approach developed by Onofri, which circumvents both loop-momentum integrals and the quantum-mechanical path integral. We illustrate the technique by computing the two-point function in scalar electrodynamics to one-loop order.

Objective. The Onodi cell is the posterior-most ethmoid air cell and an important anatomical variant because of the intimate spatial relationship with the optic nerve, internal carotid artery, and sellar floor during sphenoid sinus surgery. The authors evaluated the incidence of Onodi cells, their clinical importance, and the association between preoperative radiological findings and surgical findings. Study Design. Case series with chart review. Setting. Tertiary care medical center. Methods. The authors retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 162 cases, including preoperative paranasal sinus computed tomography (PNS CT) findings and the findings with the endoscopic endonasal transsphenoidal approach (EETSA). They evaluated the prevalence of Onodi cells and the clinical manifestations in the patients with these cells. They also examined the clinical significance of these cells during EETSA. Results. Onodi cells were identified in the preoperative PNS CT of 53 patients, whereas Onodi cells were observed in 54 (33.3%) of the 162 patients at EETSA. The Onodi cells were bilateral in 23 patients and unilateral in 31. In all cases, the Onodi cells limited the exposure of the sellar floor. Only after removing these cells was the entire sellar floor exposed so that the tumors could be removed completely. Conclusion. Onodi cells were observed more frequently than in previous studies, and 98.1% of them were identified on preoperative PNS CT. When reviewing PNS CT images preoperatively, one needs to identify the presence of Onodi cells. The Onodi cells must be removed to completely resect tumors located in the sellar region during EETSA.

Streszczenie:
Onodi cells are posterior ethmoid cells superolateral to the sphenoid sinus that is intimately associated with the optic nerve. Embryologically, they are derived from ethmoid cells that have undergone dedifferentiation. The anatomic relationship of the Onodi cell to the optic nerve and the internal carotid artery has not been clearly documented in the literature. Forty-four sagittal sections of cadaver heads and 83 CT scans of the sinuses were examined. Case studies of three patients with Onodi cell sinusitis are presented. Two patients underwent endoscopic sinus surgery, and the other chose conservative medical management. The cadaver specimens revealed Onodi cells in 14% (6/44 sections). They were located lateral, superior, or superolateral to the sphenoid sinus. These relationships were further delineated by studying CT scans of the sinuses of 76 patients. Six patients (8%) had Onodi cells. Four of them had a dehiscence of the optic nerve adjacent to the Onodi cell. Twelve patients (16%) demonstrated a dehiscence of the internal carotid artery. These findings have important implications in endoscopic sinus surgery. The anatomic variability of the posterior ethmoids, sphenoid sinus, internal carotid artery, and optic nerve makes this surgical approach particularly challenging.

AbstractComputed tomography (CT) provides an excellent map for the sinus surgeon aswell as providing information about the extent of disease and the presence of bony destruction. Surgeons need to be aware of the anatomical configuration of the sinuses and the presence of any structural changes such as a dehiscent lamina papyracea, asymmetric skull base, low level of posterior skull base or an Onodi cell, which place the patient at increased risk. Described here is a six-step guide to help the sinus surgeon avoid missing any of the radiologically important features.

Streszczenie:
Differential logic styles have been becoming popular over conventional CMOS logic because of they promise lower power consumption and high computational speed. DCVSL promises the advantages of both traditional CMOS logic and pseudo NMOS logic thus offering high speed area effective rail to rail swing logic option. The dynamic DCVSL logic family has been explored and leakage power and delay has been considered. Various dynamic versions of DCVSL logic have been introduced and their leakage power and delay have been studied. Leakage power is an important issue in dynamic circuits and a leakage control technique (LECTOR) has been explored in context of two variations of dynamic DCVSL structures. The LECTOR technique is applied to other variants of dynamic DCVSL structures and performance in terms of leakage power dissipation, propagation delay time, power delay product, transistor number is examined. In this thesis, a relatively new leakage reduction technique known as ONOFIC technique has been successfully proposed in various DCVSL structures. Various performance related parameters and transistor count has been reported. This thesis includes relative performance comparison of dynamic DCVSL structures in their conventional format and with the introduction of LECTOR and ONOFIC approach. The effectiveness and functionality of all dynamic DCVSL structures and proposed architectures are confirmed through intensive simulations on Symica Design Environment. The structures were implemented using Symica Design Environment (Symica DE) using 90 nm PTM model technology at 1.2V to analyse the variation in leakage power and delay.

This Introduction presents Onofrio Panvinio (1530–68), an Augustinian friar who gained prominence as a historian of both the Catholic Church and Roman antiquity. Historiography in sixteenth-century Rome and the interrelationship between history and theology have been awaiting a profound re-examination. Panvinio’s case enables us to trace changes in the approach to history-writing across the epochs of the Renaissance and the Catholic Reformation. This Introduction discusses Panvinio’s methods, which were modelled on humanist source criticism. It highlights differences between Panvinio and the more strongly confessionalized and dogmatized historiography (such as that of Cesare Baronio) which came after him. Lastly, there is a brief discussion of the terms Catholic Reform and Counter Reformation.

Streszczenie:
Chapters 1 and 2 provide for the first time since 1899 an up-to-date intellectual biography of Onofrio Panvinio, which shows that he was much more than the antiquarian and historian of ancient Rome whom existing scholarship has generally presumed him to be. The first chapter begins with a discussion of his family background, education, and entry into the Augustinian Order in Verona. Panvinio’s relations with the general of the order, Girolamo Seripando, are then discussed, as are his studies in Naples and Rome. Panvinio found another patron in Cardinal Marcello Cervini (elected pope in 1555), who encouraged him to study ecclesiastical history as well as Roman antiquity. The first fruit of this new approach was his treatise on papal primacy. The chapter then turns to the earliest series of historical accounts Panvinio wrote: the histories of several Roman noble families of his time. Here Panvinio made small but decisive interventions, resorting to forgery to prove his points. Cardinal Alessandro Farnese became Panvinio’s most important patron, giving him access to a significant learned circle. From 1557 to 1559, Panvinio went into exile from Rome with Farnese, spending two years in Parma and Venice. In this period, Panvinio wrote his first short history of the popes and cardinals. This chapter also discusses Panvinio’s works on Roman antiquity, which raise questions regarding epigraphy and forgery.

Streszczenie:
This paper presents the justification for the approach, details and results of the Main Generator Seal Oil System reliability enhancements on the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station, SONGS. The SONGS, Unit 3 experienced substantial turbine damage in early 2001 after the turbine bearings lubrication oil supply failed. During a loss of off-site power incident, power was lost to the two AC powered turbine lubrication oil pumps due to a breaker failure in the switchgear and the DC powered emergency bearing lubricating oil pump failed to start due to a breaker trip. The SONGS turbine generators coasted down from full speed to a full stop without lubricating oil. This resulted in significant bearing, journal and steam path damage that required a four-month duration repair outage during a time period where electricity was in short supply in the State of California. The generator hydrogen sealing system remained operable during this event, however it was recognized during the event follow up investigation that this system had vulnerabilities to failure similar to the bearing lubrication system. In order to prevent a reoccurrence of this extremely costly event, SONGS has taken actions to modify both of these critical turbine generator systems by adding additional, continuously operating pumps with a new, independent power source and independently routed cables. The main challenge was to integrate the additional equipment into the existing lubrication and seal oil systems. The lubrication Oil System was the first system to be retrofitted and these results already have been presented. Reference 2. This paper provides the result of the reliability enhancements for the Main Generator Seal Oil System, which concludes the turbine/generator critical oil systems reliability improvements, performed by SONGS. It is worth noting that the design team discovered and corrected a number of other significant operational issues, which had been present from the early days and also learned a great deal of detailed information about this vital system during the project. The SONGS approach and findings are discussed in this paper, as well as a summary of the work performed. This technical paper will be of interest to utilities with a need to improve turbine generator reliability issues.

Streszczenie:
Abstract Fluidelastic instability (FEI) is well known to be a critical flow-induced vibration concern for the integrity of the tubes in nuclear steam generators. Traditionally, this has been assumed to occur in the direction transverse to the direction of flow but the tube failures at San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS) in Los Angeles proved that this assumption is not generally valid. A simple tube-in-channel theoretical model was previously developed to predict streamwise as well as transverse FEI in a parallel triangular tube array. This predicted that this array geometry was particularly sensitive to streamwise FEI for high mass-damping parameters and small pitch ratios, the conditions in which the SONGS failures occurred. The advantage of this simple modelling approach is that no new empirical data are required for parametric studies of the effects of tube pattern and pitch ratio on FEI. The tube-in-channel model has been extended to in-line square, normal triangular and rotated square tube arrays and the stability of these geometric patterns are analyzed for the effects of varying pitch ratio and the mass-damping parameter. The results are compared with the available experimental data and conclusions are drawn regarding the relative vulnerability of these different tube array geometries to streamwise FEI.

Streszczenie:
The shut-down of the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS) has been attributed to damaging streamwise Fluidelastic Instability (FEI) of the steam generator tubes, a phenomenon which has traditionally been assumed not to occur. This has generated a significant research effort to better understand this phenomenon and to develop appropriate design criteria for its prevention. Most current design codes are based on Connors criterion for FEI which neglects both streamwise FEI and the effects of tube array pattern and pitch ratio. It is becoming clear that array geometry and pitch ratio are important determining factors in FEI, especially in the streamwise direction. This paper presents an extension of the theory of Lever and Weaver to consider arrays of flexible fluid-coupled tubes which are free to become unstable in both the transverse and streamwise directions. This simplified modelling approach has the advantages of being very tractable for numerical parametric studies and having no need for experimental data input. Previous research by the authors has shown that the predictions of this model agree very well with the available experiments for parallel triangular arrays for both transverse and streamwise FEI. In this paper, the results of such studies are presented for the both transverse and streamwise FEI for square inline and normal triangular arrays and compared with the authors’ previous results for parallel triangular arrays. It is shown that FEI is strongly influenced by array geometry, especially for small pitch ratio arrays operating at low values of the mass damping parameter. The results show good agreement with the available experimental data.

Streszczenie:
Abstract By generating very deep levels of compressive stress, laser peening can eliminate stress corrosion cracking of materials of use in the nuclear industry; tested materials include Alloys N06600 (Inconel 600), N06690 (Inconel 690), N06022 (Alloy C22) and stainless steels K44220 (300M), S30400 (304) and S31600 (316L). In this work we take a further step in direct application to the welds of multi-purpose canisters (MPCs) employed for dry storage of spent fuel at nuclear plants. This storage is a temporary approach awaiting interim or permanent storage.. For storage in coastal, lakeside and even humid environments, air-entrained chlorides can make the canister welds susceptible to pitting and chloride induced stress corrosion cracking (CISCC). Using ASTM G36 (2013) accelerated corrosive testing we evaluated CISCC lifetimes of welded 316L stainless steel canister plates configured to MPC geometry showing in excess of 19 times lifetime increase of laser peened panel sections vs. those left as-welded. Specifically cracks never developed within and were arrested when propagating into the laser peened area. We measured residual stress in test plates and related it to calculations of stress intensity and depth expected in the full canister geometry. We discuss the relevance of stress depth to pitting depth and crack growth rates. Our two-dimensional stress mapping shows that high energy laser peening provides deep (> 5 mm) plastic compression in the canister material and geometry. In parallel, as we gained customer and NRC approvals, we developed and deployed the hardware and control technology that enabled a transportable system to peen canisters welds during the fabrication process. The canisters are now loaded or in process of being loaded at the San Onofre Nuclear Power Plant.
