Building on research conducted in language learning and drama-based pedagogies, this paper takes stock of recent technological developments in interpreter education, and proposes that a renewed focus on the interpreter as a language user and as a performer is necessary.1

Participation in synchronous online learning is an increasing need for students’ learning outcomes. Teachers generally cannot be sure about the fact that students who are seen in the participation lists are really following the online tasks. Recent studies have shown that gamification can be an effective way to support learners’ participation in the tasks. This study intended to suggest sample scenarios in line with using gamification elements in online learning environments. Two basic scenarios were developed considering the properties of online learners’ characteristics and gamification elements. First scenario giving learning responsibilities to the learners includes a puzzle activity. Second scenario presents a block-building activity including the leaderboards. The suggested model includes some new ways of using awards, reputation, badges, levels, and leader boards to provide an attractive learning environment. It is hoped that suggested scenarios can provide learning opportunities via increasing participation in synchronous learning environments.

Technological advances toward consumer-specific expectations require a sustained commitment and coordination across policy- and decision-makers. The present scenario-based study aimed at identifying prevailing perceptions regarding telehealth applications among Austrian healthcare experts. During a two-round online Delphi survey, panelists rated perceived benefits, obstacles, innovativeness, desirability, and estimated implementation date of 10 telehealth scenarios. Panelists (n = 73, 74% males) perceived that the implementation of telehealth scenarios could especially improve patients’ knowledge, quality of social healthcare, and living standard. In contrast, the three top-ranked obstacles were costs, technical prerequisites, and data security. Survey participants rated innovativeness of the presented future scenarios as quite high, whereas perceived desirability was moderate. Overall, ratings suggested precautious attitudes toward technological innovations. The survey findings suggest building taskforces and enhancing communication between healthcare stakeholders to proactively shape the future of telehealth in Austria.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect of online service failure on online customer satisfaction and offline customer loyalty, and the moderating role of brand strength is also examined. While extant research on brick and click service mode recognizes the positive spillover effect from offline stores to online stores, this study analyzes the negative spillover effect from online stores to offline stores.Design/methodology/approachThis paper tests the hypotheses by two studies. Study 1 is based on a 2 (failure severity: mild vs severe) × 2 (brand strength: strong vs weak) between-subjects experimental design using scenarios in a brick and click retailer context, while study 2 is based on data collected from a scenario-based questionnaire survey and analyzed through the structural equation modeling.FindingsThe results indicate that participants exposed to severe online service failure show lower online satisfaction as compared to their counterparts exposed to mild online service failure, but they show the similar level of offline loyalty in both degrees of online service failure. Nevertheless, these results are not moderated by brand strength significantly.Research limitations/implicationsAn experimental design and a scenario-based questionnaire survey are used to test the framework. However, the generalizability of the research findings is still limited to a specific study setting. Future research in a different setting is needed to further validate the presented findings.Practical implicationsThe findings suggest that physical service providers should adopt aggressive online expansion strategy to seize the market and pay more attention to online service quality rather than online marketing only.Originality/valueThis is one of few studies to explore the risk of brick and click service mode, and provide a clear understanding of the likely occurrence of online service failure and its impact on online customer satisfaction and offline customer loyalty. It extends prior research by exploring non-existence of negative perceptual effect from online service failure to offline customer loyalty in the short run and weakening brand effect, which contributes to cross-channel spillover effect in the integrated multi-channel context and brand building in the internet era.

This communication presents ModSCO, a web application that supports systematic energy performance evaluation using Reduced Order Models (ROM). These models are particularly useful in scenario with missing, incomplete or uncertain building information. The paper describes the theory behind ROM grey-box modelling and presents case studies that support the smart operation of energy systems by generating Energy Conservation Opportunities (ESCOs) for instance, to help ISO 50001 implementation. The ROM demonstrated to provide accurate results with a reduced effort. The acceptable calibration tolerance provided by the ASHRAE Guideline 14 is been used to demonstrate the ROM’s accuracy. Additionally, the ModSCO architecture and user interface is also described.

PurposeThe purpose of this study is to investigate whether customer intention to purchase luxury products from the online stores of fashion luxury retailers varies depending on their degree of corporate image and showrooming strategy, when the retailers do not have a wider store network in the region where customers live.Design/methodology/approachTwo scenario-based, between-subject experimental studies were conducted to test the hypotheses.FindingsFindings showed that both building corporate image and showrooms are effective in enhancing customer intention to purchase from online stores, without widely increasing the number of stores; however, building corporate image is more useful to high corporate-image retailers and showrooms are more appealing to low corporate-image retailers.Practical implicationsThe findings are useful to fashion luxury retailers, particularly those based in Western countries who seek to target customers in other regions, particularly those in developing countries.Originality/valueThis study contributes to the literature on online fashion luxury consumption and multichannel retailing.

Most existing wireless indoor positioning systems have only success performance requirements in normal operating situations whereby all wireless equipment works properly. There remains a lack of system reliability that can support emergency situations when there are some reference node failures, such as in earthquake and fire scenarios. Additionally, most systems do not incorporate environmental information such as temperature and relative humidity level into the process of determining the location of objects inside the building. To address these gaps, we propose a novel integrated framework for wireless indoor positioning systems based on a location fingerprinting technique which is called the Robust and low Complexity indoor positioning systems framework (RoC framework). Our proposed integrated framework consists of two essential indoor positioning processes: the system design process and the localization process. The RoC framework aims to achieve robustness in the system design structure and reliability of the target location during the online estimation phase either under a normal situation or when some reference nodes (RNs) have failed. The availability of low-cost temperature and relative humidity sensors can provide additional information for the location fingerprinting technique and thereby reduce location estimation complexity by including this additional information. Experimental results and comparative performance evaluation revealed that the RoC framework can achieve robustness in terms of the system design structure, whereby it was able to provide the highest positioning performance in either fault-free or RN-failure scenarios. Moreover, in the online estimation phase, the proposed framework can provide the highest reliability of the target location under the RN-failure scenarios and also yields the lowest computational complexity in online searching compared to other techniques. Specifically, when compared to the traditional weighted k-nearest neighbor techniques (WKNN) under the 30% RN-failure scenario at Building B, the proposed RoC framework shows 74.1% better accuracy performance and yields 55.1% lower computational time than the WKNN.

In the digital era of big data, data analytics and smart cities, a new generation of planning support systems is emerging. The Rapid Analytics Interactive Scenario Explorer is a novel planning support system developed to help planners and policy-makers determine the likely land value uplift associated with the provision of new city infrastructure. The Rapid Analytics Interactive Scenario Explorer toolkit was developed following a user-centred research approach including iterative design, prototyping and evaluation. Tool development was informed by user inputs obtained through a series of co-design workshops with two end-user groups: land valuers and urban planners. The paper outlines the underlying technical architecture of the toolkit, which has the ability to perform rapid calculations and visualise the results, for the end-users, through an online mapping interface. The toolkit incorporates an ensemble of hedonic pricing models to calculate and visualise value uplift and so enable the user to explore what if? scenarios. The toolkit has been validated through an iterative case study approach. Use cases were related to two policy areas: property and land valuation processes (for land taxation purposes) and value uplift scenarios (for value capture purposes). The cases tested were in Western Sydney, Australia. The paper reports on the results of the ordinary least square linear regressions – used to explore the impacts of hedonic attributes on property value at the global level – and geographically weighted regressions – developed to provide local estimates and explore the varying spatial relationships between attributes and house price across the study area. Building upon the hedonic modelling, the paper also reports the value uplift functionality of the Rapid Analytics Interactive Scenario Explorer toolkit that enables users to drag and drop new train stations and rapidly calculate expected property prices under a range of future transport scenarios. The Rapid Analytics Interactive Scenario Explorer toolkit is believed to be the first of its kind to provide this specific functionality. As it is problem and policy specific, it can be considered an example of the next generation of data-driven planning support system.

Purpose This paper aims to demonstrate how building competency in privacy can be used to transform the corporate strategy to generate a sustainable competitive advantage. A novel framework is presented as a guide to redesigning strategy by striking a balance between customer expectation and organizational objectives. In doing so, the paper offers four possible outcomes of accommodation, accumulation, association and affiliation, providing illustrations to each scenario for strategy formulation. Design/methodology/approach The relationship between privacy paradox and corporate strategy was examined through a qualitative research study. The author conducted 30 in-depth interviews on grounded theory methodology investigating customer insights on the nature and extent of privacy protection associated with e-commerce and organizational approach. Findings The customers are dissatisfied with existing data security strategies adopted by firms in protecting privacy. The over-reliance on systems has negatively influenced the communication between the organization and customers, leading to a possible competitive disadvantage. The firms need to redesign privacy strategy shifting from a system-driven approach to providing personalized service. Originality/value This paper presents a novel framework the privacy strategy matrix (PSM), introducing privacy as a strategic expedient in transforming corporate strategy facilitating privacy protection as a metaphor for differentiation. PSM framework provides a standard to evaluate the effectiveness of the corporate strategy in managing privacy manifesting a path toward deriving a sustainable competitive advantage.

The present paper proposes a new model for the exploration of hesitated patterns from multiple levels of conceptual hierarchy in the transactional dataset. The usual practice of mining patterns has focused on identifying frequent patterns (i.e., which occur together) in the transactional dataset but uncovers the vital information about the patterns which are almost frequent (but not exactly frequent) called “hesitated patterns.” The proposed model uses the reduced minimum support threshold (contains two values: attractiveness and hesitation) and constant minimum confidence threshold with the top-down progressive deepening approach for generating patterns and utilizing the apriori property. To validate the model, an online purchasing scenario of books through e-commerce-based online shopping platforms such as Amazon has been considered and shown that how the various factors contributed towards building hesitation to purchase a book at the time of purchasing. The present work suggests a novel way for deriving hesitated patterns from multiple levels in the conceptual hierarchy with respect to the target dataset. Moreover, it is observed that the concepts and theories available in the existing related work Lu and Ng (2007) are only focusing on the introductory aspect of vague set theory-based hesitation association rule mining, which is not useful for handling the patterns from multiple levels of granularity, while the proposed model is complete in nature and addresses the very significant and untouched problem of mining “multilevel hesitated patterns” and is certainly useful for exploring the hesitated patterns from multiple levels of granularity based on the considered hesitation status in a transactional dataset. These hesitated patterns can be further utilized by decision makers and business analysts to build the strategy on how to increase the attraction level of such hesitated items (appeared in a particular transaction/set of transactions in a given dataset) to convert their state from hesitated to preferred items.

AbstractDuring interactions, system actors may face up misunderstandings when their local states contain inconsistent data about the same fact. Misunderstandings in interactions are likely to reduce interactivity performances (deviation or deadlock) or even affect overall system behavior. In this paper, we characterize misunderstandings in interactions between system actors (that may be human users or system agents) in interactive adaptive systems. To deal with such misunderstandings and ensure state consistency, we present an agent-based architecture and a scenario structuring approach. The system includes several agents devoted to scenario unfolding, plot adaptation and consistency management. Scenario structuring is based on the notion of a situation that is an elementary building block dividing the interactions between systems’ actors into contextual scenes. This pattern supports not only scenario execution but consistency management as well. In order to organize and control interactions, the situation contextualizes interactions and activity of the system’s actors. It also includes prevention and tolerance agent-based mechanisms to deal with the misunderstandings and their causes. We validate our consistency management mechanisms using Uppaal simulation and provide some experimental results to show the effectiveness of our approach on an online distance learning case study

Distance or online learning is more than simply uploading and delivering learning resources to learners but in fact, it is a process that provides learners with autonomy, responsibility, flexibility and choice. This can be a challenge for many academic teachers. In 2020, as universities globally shifted to online learning, in response to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, a variety of staff have supported colleagues to develop e-learning techniques ‘just-in-time’ for effective delivery to students in fully online platforms. This has required a transformation of educational development and faculty support globally. This paper will reflect on mechanisms of support demonstrating tailored staff support to transform education in three case scenario contexts, during the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in three different countries. Our case studies illustrate that support lies beyond technological capability building to also incorporate the essentials of holistic well-being and resilience reinforcement. This paper demonstrates temporary solutions to a global crisis in online education and reflects on lessons learnt and how eteaching and e-learning support may transform beyond the pandemic.

Providing users with the way to collaboratively edit shared model is the challenge of complex informational systems. The majority of existing methods require online connection between users, otherwise, users’ intentions can be lost after a certain delay. The aim of this research is to build a collaborative system that allows users to edit shared model in offline manner without losing their intentions. Firstly, commit-based system was selected as underlying data storage. Secondly, we examined existing collaborative algorithms and selected operational transformation as the most perspective for this scenario. Thirdly, we described the way to merge commits, that stores operations, using modified operational transformation algorithm. Key features of modified operational transformation algorithm include ability to handle resolving of merge conflicts, when intentions of two users are conflicting. To implement this, we consider the set of commits branches as ordered set. As a result, we developed a version control system, that stores user’s intentions and can automatically resolve conflicts on merge. This approach can be applied to any informational system, which is able to save user’s input as the set of operations.

A novel and an efficient rescue system with a multi-agent simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) framework is proposed to reduce the rescue time while rescuing the people trapped inside a burning building. In this study, the truncated signed distance (TSD) based SLAM algorithm is employed to accurately construct a two-dimensional map of the surroundings. For a new and significantly different scenario, information is gathered and the general iterative closest point method (GICP) is directly employed instead of the conventional TSD-SLAM process. Rescuers can utilize a total map created by merging individual maps, allowing them to efficiently search for victims. For online map merging, it is essential to determine the timing of when the individual maps are merged and the extent to which one map reflects the other map, via the weights. In the several experiments conducted, a light-detection and ranging system and an inertial measurement unit were integrated into a smart helmet for rescuers. The results indicated that the map was built more accurately than that obtained using the conventional TSD-SLAM. Additionally, the merged map was built more correctly by determining proper parameters for online map merging. Consequently, the accurate merged map allows rescuers to search for victims efficiently.

This paper presents a novel acceptance model for an online music streaming scenario of Thailand. The music streaming industry has been gaining in popularity in the recent times. This research has been conducted in order to measure the user attitude towards the use of this relatively new service using a modified version of the popular Technology Acceptance Model. We try to identify the most popular music-streaming service of Thailand and also the factors that affect the use of such a service. Data has been collected in the form of an online questionnaire survey from more than 300 participants for the purpose of model building and validation. A subsequent regression analysis carried out on the proposed model explains more than 60 percent of the variance of the dependent variable i.e. Behavioral Intention in our case to the predictor variables Perceived Usefulness, Perceived Ease of Use, Perceived Enjoyment and Perceived Satisfaction Level. The results show that Perceived Enjoyment and Perceived satisfaction are the two strongest predictors for Behavioral Intention which is quite different from that of the utilitarian type of information systems.Keywords: Music streaming, TAM, hedonic information systems, regression

PurposeAugmented Reality (AR) integrates computer-generated images to a physical environment in real-time. Online apparel shopping presents some product-related risks, as consumers can neither physically see and touch the products nor try them on. The present study examined whether AR conveys reliable apparel product information in terms of fit, size, and product performance; and how AR affects attitudes toward apparel and purchase intentions when shopping online.Design/methodology/approachThis research was designed as a within-subject quasi-experimental study using repeated measures in two conditions: virtual try-on using the AR technology vs. physical try-on. A scenario was developed to help participants imagine themselves shopping online for a specific dress.FindingsResults indicated that size and color of dresses were conveyed accurately when utilizing AR as compared to physical try-on. Visual attributes such as style, garment details, and coordination with other items were found to be satisfactorily predicted when AR was employed. Overall, attitudes towards both AR and real dress, and purchase intentions were favorable. Participants with higher telepresence levels were found to have more positive attitudes towards the dress and greater purchase intentions when using AR as compared to the participants with low telepresence levels.Research limitations/implicationsOur findings implied that AR can provide enough information especially for garment sizes and visual characteristics when making purchase decisions. AR technology can be instrumental in introducing a certain style, building positive attitudes towards products, and driving sales, when the consumers perceive a certain level of “being there”. This study was limited to female students in North America. Also, because a single stimulus was used, the results cannot be generalized to other stimuli.Originality/valueOur study findings showed that participants were able to select the right garment size by using AR. The average ratings for visual characteristics such as style and detail were above the neutral level when using AR; indicating that participants can understand visual attributes in AR when shopping online. Moreover, in the AR condition participants with higher telepresence levels had higher attitudes towards the garment and purchase intentions as compared to the participants with low telepresence. AR can be instrumental for online apparel shopping. Retailers need to understand the potentials of these technologies and work with technology developers to enhance consumers' experiences.

The article provides an analysis of the financial stability of Kazakhstan’s economy. It was revealed that in our country, the presence of rich common resources and stable economic policy led to the formation of a favourable investment structure in the country and, as a result, to the rapid development of the national economy and the industrial sector. The article also considers the key risks and forecasts of the social and economic development of Kazakhstan for the coming years and their scenario forecasts for the further development of the republic. The goals of sustainable development are given separately in the article both in Kazakhstan and in the world according to online resources, in particular newspapers, and to the sources of the UN Development Program in the field of sustainable development. In general, the types of industry in Kazakhstan are also reflected: ferrous metallurgy (12.5%), non-ferrous metallurgy (12%), gas industry, chemical industry, textile industry (0,2%), engineering (8%), production of building materials, oil and oil refining industry, light industry (4%), food industry, fuel and energy complex. Kazakhstan is also a world leader in uranium production.

Objectives: The current digital revolution is particularly relevant for interactions of healthcare providers with patients and the community as a whole. The growing public acceptance and distribution of new communication tools such as smart mobile phones provide the prerequisite for information and communication technology (ICT) -assisted healthcare applications. The present study aimed at identifying specifications and perceptions of different interest groups regarding future demands of ICT-supported doctor–patient communication in Austria.Methods: German-speaking Austrian healthcare experts (n = 73; 74 percent males; mean age, 43.9 years; SD 9.4) representing medical professionals, patient advocates, and administrative personnel participated in a 2-round online Delphi process. Participants evaluated scenario-based benefits and obstacles for possible prospect introduction as well as degree of innovation, desirability, and estimated implementation dates of two medical care-related future set ups.Results: Panelists expected the future ICT-supported doctor–patient dialogue to especially improve the three factors doctors–patient relationship, patients’ knowledge, and quality of social health care. However, lack of acceptance by doctors, data security, and monetary aspects were considered as the three most relevant barriers for ICT implementation. Furthermore, inter-group comparison regarding desirability of future scenarios showed that medical professionals tended to be more skeptical about health-related technological innovations (p < .001).Conclusions: The findings of this survey revealed different expectations among interest groups. Thus, we suggest building taskforces and using workshops for establishing a dialogue between stakeholders to positively shape the future of ICT-supported collaboration and communication between doctors and patients.

Purpose – With the facility management industry increasingly adopting building information modeling (BIM) technologies, there is a need to investigate where this industry stands in its application. Moreover, studies on efficient and cost-effective solutions to integrate BIM and mobile augmented reality (MAR) present an environment where facility managers can experience an intuitive natural interaction with their mobile interfaces to efficiently access needed information. The industry’s view on this new approach of accessing information from BIM models should also be investigated, and its feedback should be considered for future phases of this avenue of research. Design/methodology/approach – This paper explores not only how BIM can be beneficial to facility management practitioners, but also how its integration with MAR and making the data accessible through handheld mobile devices can enhance current facility management practices. An online survey was conducted to assess professional facility managers’ characteristics, technology use and working environment as well as the current status of BIM application in their practices. An online video scenario has also been used to illustrate to facility managers how an ideal BIM-MAR-integrated environment could provide them with mobile access to their required information. Facility managers’ feedback on usability, applicability and challenges of such environment has also been investigated through a follow-up survey. Findings – With this paper, industry practitioners as well as academic researchers will be able to understand the current status of BIM and mobile computing application in facility management along with the benefits and challenges of implementing these technologies in an augmented reality (AR) environment. Originality/value – Understanding facility managers’ requirements, characteristics and the way they do their tasks would be of great value for development of tools or systems that would facilitate their practices.

In public places such as malls, train stations, and airports, there is a constant flow of people either waiting or commuting. Even though people at these locations are surrounded by many other individuals, mostly there is little social interaction, which generally creates a gloomy atmosphere. Any applications promoting social interactions are a welcome addition. We present IMOVE, an interactive framework aimed at facilitating the development of such applications. It offers a combination of motion tracking and projection methods which makes it easier to create interactive experiences and games, tailored to motivate people to move around, explore, and, most importantly, interact with each other in a fun way. People moving around trigger events and effects, interacting with the applications using their body movements or even collaboratively working towards an outcome. IMOVE was validated by means of a variety of applications in a real scenario, the entrance hall of a busy public building: the classic Pong game, a collaborative and accessible casual game (Save the Turtles!), and a procedural visual art generator based on game mechanics (Light Trails). All applications have been successfully running for the past year. The IMOVE framework is freely available online and it has been shown to be particularly suited and accessible to novice game and interactive application developers for large public spaces.

The research carried out on the following strategic phenomenon, for the most part, the guidelines of the functionalist paradigm. This production has its relevance in the scientific community, however, does not cover the strategy in all its complexity. In this scenario, it is intended to address the strategy from the assumptions of social phenomenology, an online research study focused on the action. Social action is the experience of the phenomenon. For this, research is carried out "for reasons" and "why reasons" present in strategic action. The relevance of this study is to address the strategy as a phenomenon that exists because of the social subject, which may show that its essence transcends the limits of individuality, because thinking is based on the phenomenological social awareness of the existence of the other. Held semi-structured interviews with fourteen strategists operating in cluster of furniture Bento Gonçalves, and the data analyzed according to the phenomenological approach of Sanders (1982). As a result, it follows that the "why reasons" are the 'becoming' and expertise, and the "for reasons": the search for freedom in corporate decision making and building a legacy. We conclude that the meaning of strategic action is not isolated, being linked to several factors related to the existential project of the strategist.

Society, countries, chaps and organizations are going through an atypical moment in history because of the Covid-19 pandemic, which highlights the need to strategically propose local, regional and planetary solutions for phenomena that affect the health and the economy. In this context, the communication of organizations is driven by the frenetic circulation of content and meanings disseminated by digital media, a phenomenon that has changed - and continues to change - the modes of subjectivation, conversation and sociability, as it elevates the actors, the shares to infinity and the connections. This challenging environment constitutes a favorable territory for building relationships, but also foments of conflicts and reputational crises that may involve people, governments, institutions, brands, organizations, etc. Hence, the current scenario shows that the production of information and the building of relationships through digital media reflect on identity, image and reputation. We highlight the existence of a fine line that can become unfavorable through controversial and contradictory communicative actions, given that the contents are disseminated and subject to all kinds of evaluation by the “inhabitants” of the online ecosystem. The organizational performance must align ethical, transparent and coherent principles with corporate and public objectives, as well as paying attention to the rapid changes on the contemporary society. The monitoring of communication becomes a fundamental tool so that, given the fast connections made possible by the development of digital technologies and media, organizations can prevent and manage possible crises and conflicts. These theoretical-pragmatic scenario reinforce the nature of the Public Relations activity as a true sine qua non, as poorly planned speeches and strategies can trigger negative reactions when produced in a time of heightened social sensitivity. In conclusion, the scenario also points to challenges related to the surveillance of citizens, which cover issues related to security, integrity and privacy. Thus, the objective of this article is to analyze, discursively, based on the notion of ethos, two audiovisual utterances from Rede Globo de Televisão on its official Youtube channel, in July 2020, entitled: “Globo – Qualidade também é respeito” and “Globo – Qualidade também é brasilidade”. The methodological procedures correspond to bibliographic research, discussing themes such as digital media, public relations, identity, image, reputation and organizations, and principles of discourse analysis, discussing the production of meaning effects in images of the self (ethos) that can produce cognitive dissonance in the audience. We investigated surveys carried out and made available by the Public Relations consultancy entitled Edelman to understand the trust of citizens in the Brazilian media, which show that more than half of the interviewees distrust the mass media. We infer that ethical, honesty and truth issues become central to reputation due to the acceleration of mediatization processes, marked by interactivity, participation, and clashes, launching organizations into an ocean of vulnerability characterized by praise, boycotts and cancellations who place the strategic management of public relations as imperative in the face of reverberations and negative conversations about the image and reputation of organizations on the digital media.

COVID-19 pandemic has not only negatively impacted the socio-economic attributes worldwide1 but also led to the confrontation of the education system with enormous challenges. This necessitated the immediate transition from face-to-face teaching to e-learning.2 This abrupt shift was primarily attributed to the need for social distancing due to the contagiousness of this disease and hence was intended to save humanity from coronavirus infection.3 Availing the e-learning alternatives for academic continuity in response to pandemic was the only solution. The teachers shared educational resources in the form of presentations, audio-visual videos, and documents, etc. by using assorted modalities like Microsoft Teams, Zoom, and Webinar.4 Although this exercise demanded stringent efforts of our teachers this bestowed them with an exhilarating opportunity to modify their pedagogical strategies.5 Lockdown imposition and abrupt closure of academic organizations considerably impacted the domain of higher studies. Everybody adapted to deliver their services remotely. The lectures, practicals, tutorials, examinations all were suspended with immediate effect amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.6 Although most of our students managed to attend online classes this modality was perceived inefficient in coverage of the whole curriculum in terms of acquisition of practical skills.7 No doubt synchronous and asynchronous teachings were done by using diverse instructional methods but adjustment of teaching pace, constructive feedback to the students’ assignments, and activation of students’ prior knowledge were reported to be immensely deficient.8 Resource-constrained countries profoundly faced problems in the smooth execution of virtual learning.9 Considerable uncertainties pertinent to COVID-19 along with limited facilities in the execution of prosperous e-learning academia made the scenario quite cumbersome. Tutors implicated in e-learning universally were dealt with issues of online connectivity, capacity building for proficient content delivery, and efficient interactivity with students.10 Designing an appropriate framework to bridge the gaps in e-learning conduction is deemed necessary for the provision of quality education without compromising the established standards amidst rampant outbreaks.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to empirically test the role of knowledge management system (KMS) on the performance of students in higher educational institutions (HEIs). Design/methodology/approach Building on the extensive review of literature, the authors explored the factors of KMS to arrive at the conceptual model which was then validated using structural equation modeling. For the quantitative analysis, data were collected from undergraduate students using questionnaires distributed both through online and offline modes. Findings Empirical evidence supports the view that KMS have a direct and significant impact on the student performance (SP) in HEIs. Research limitations/implications The data are limited to 311 undergraduate students from the University of Delhi, India. Practical implications With the onset of national rankings framework like NAAC (National Assessment and Accreditation Council), NIRF (National Institutional Ranking Framework) and the attempt to achieve global recognition in THE (Times Higher Education), Quacquarelli Symonds and other world university rankings, the HEIs are trying hard to improve their performance comprehensively. In such a scenario, this paper provides insights into how HEIs can enhance performance of its students by harnessing KMS. Originality/value The current paper empirically validates the effect of KMS on the performance of students in an educational institution. While the impact of KMS on performance is measured empirically in corporations, such studies are scanty in academic centers. Moreover, while measuring the performance in HEIs using KM, the focus on ranking parameters has never been there. Such an orientation is essential as the rankings are getting wide acceptance from a global audience.

The overall usefulness of the intervention was assessed by analysing prescribers’ self-reported confidence and knowledge in treating patients with RTIs before and after undertaking the intervention, and views on the relevance of the intervention to their work. Acceptability of the intervention was assessed in semistructured interviews. The feasibility of data collection methods was assessed by recording the number of study components completed by prescribers.Results15 prescribers (maximum sample size) consented and completed all four stages of the study. Prescribers reported high to very high levels of confidence and knowledge preintervention and postintervention, with slight postintervention increases in communicating with patients and a slight reduction in building rapport. Qualitative findings supported quantitative findings; prescribers were reassured of their own practice which in turn increased their confidence and knowledge in consultations. The information in the intervention was not new to prescribers but was applicable and useful to consolidate learning and enable self-reflection. Completing the e-learning intervention was acceptable to prescribers.ConclusionsIt was feasible to conduct the study. The intervention was acceptable and useful to prescribers. Future work will add complex clinical content in the intervention before conducting a full trial.

Purpose To understand how customer engagement has been researched in the last decade, the purpose of this paper is to provide a systematic review of customer engagement research in the existing literature, derive a comprehensive definition of customer engagement and summarize few important and basic issues that future research should address. Design/methodology/approach An extensive literature review was carried out on customer engagement spread over 38 journals identified from online academic databases of Scopus, Emerald, EBSCOS and Science Direct. A total of 66 conceptual and empirical articles on customer engagement research spanning from 2005 to 2015 were analyzed based on different classification schemes. Findings Customer engagement is becoming a key concept in marketing. Customer engagement is a multi-dimensional concept comprising of cognitive, emotional, behavioral and social dimensions. The theoretical foundations of this concept predominantly lie with relationship marketing and service-dominant logic. Research on customer engagement has gained a significant pace in the last six years (2010-2015) but most of the articles on customer engagement have come from developed countries. Research limitations/implications By providing the distribution schema of customer engagement articles based on different criteria and by highlighting the future research avenues, this study is believed to serve as a valuable tool for researchers to understand the current scenario of customer engagement research in the marketing discipline and take this research area forward. This study acknowledges limitations with respect to its exclusive search criteria, which might affect its generalizability. Practical implications This study exhibits the favorable outcomes organizations can derive by building and managing an engaged customer base. The more an organization knows about how to engage its customers, the better adept it will be to enact so. Therefore, understanding customer engagement is imperative in that regard; this review will help organizations comprehend that better. Originality/value This is the first systematic review of customer engagement that provides a detailed understanding of the current state of customer engagement research on a single platform and also draws a comprehensive customer engagement conceptualization.

In the context of the rapid development of the information environment, a person’s life path, identity, and the living space of an individual are not only presented in real life, but also in the virtual world, as well as in augmented reality. The mixing of virtual and real spaces cannot but affect the daily life of young people. This article attempts to describe and structure the elements of life models as fragments of a life scenario, broadcast through communities in social networks. The social network VKontakte has become a meaningful field for analysis as it is the most popular and frequently used online platform in the information space for the purpose of transmitting interesting and relevant information among Russian peers. The starting point of the study was the assumption that the content of social network posts describing the spheres of life can serve as a basis for building elements of life models broadcast on the Internet. The research consisted of several stages: preparatory (questioning young people about their preferred Internet content) and the main one (semantic and content analysis of the content of social networks). The sample of the preparatory stage was 110 respondents, the average age was 22 years (SD=2.8). The main sample consisted of over 200,000 posts from the top 20 social media communities (with an average of 4 million subscribers, with entertainment and non-themed content) over the past 2 years. With the help of special program codes and computer programs, the posts devoted to the most significant spheres of human activity were analyzed. It was found that the most popular marker words denoting areas of life in posts are work, relationships, and family. The data of automated semantic and content analysis showed that most often, through posts in communities, a model of an active and purposeful person is declared. This is an individual who is ready for action, flexible, mobile with respect to work and self-development, but conservative in regard to building family relationships. The results obtained confirm the assumption that the characteristics of the components of life models are presented most vividly in the posts of Internet communities, are actively broadcast and have their own characteristics. The results of the research data can contribute to the study of the main mechanisms of transmission between contemporaries of characteristics of behavior in real life, values and information through Internet content, as well as the work of practicing psychologists when referring to the profile on social networks or preferred client communities.

Likewise, in order to find out more information about a destination building, such a system is increasingly needed both in front of the computer (on-line) of the house and after reaching the destination in the building (off-line). Accordingly, we employ Building Information System (BIS) as a system that provide users with content related to a building like BIO and BIM. The Building Information Online system (BIO) is an interactive map application designed to assist customers in finding parcels and building on a map online. The Building Information Modeling (BIM) allows nD information to be visualized simultaneously by architects, engineers and constructors to gain a synchronized understanding viewing from different perspectives. Inspired by above researches, we implement a service that provides online and offline Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) content for a building. This system can provide users outside the building with information within the building via devices with VR and AR support regardless of space restrictions. The system is designed to operate across scenarios requiring offline, online, offline-online collaboration, etc., and the corresponding experiments are carried out.

Real energy performance of new and retrofitted buildings often consistently differs from expectations. While occupants might complain about poor indoor climate, the energy use in such buildings is often higher than expected, leading to the well-known phenomenon called “Energy Performance Gap”. In the past years, monitoring of buildings, both in terms of energy use and indoor climate conditions, was realised mostly for office buildings only, and at high financial costs. However, the exponential growth in availability of IoT devices, over the last years, opens now new scenarios for low-cost monitoring and control solutions of buildings. Yet, modern IoT devices are often only accessible online through the vendors’ software, although some devices make use of open communication protocols and can, therefore, be connected to open platforms such as openHAB. However, the use of open platforms is still connected to a big efforts for many final users. We, therefore, propose climify.org, an open platform for plug and play connection of IoT sensors and actuators, for easy monitoring and controlling of buildings and buildings’ HVAC systems. The platform climify.org offers, at time of writing, three main applications. The first application is an IoT device installation app, to be used on portable devices (e.g. mobile phones or tablets of system administrators): this app allows easily installing and locating a sensor or an actuator, within a building. The second application is an online service for data visualisation and HVAC control: while the monitoring data can be plotted, the service offers several data evaluation methods; moreover, the settings of the connected actuators can be modified and controlled. The third application can be installed on portable devices (mobile phones and tablets of buildings’ occupants) and allows occupants to provide feedback on their perception of the indoor climate through several questionnaires’ formats. Through the three applications developed within climify.org, we aim at providing the best indoor climate and the lowest energy use through a low-cost solution.

This article aims to analyze the existence and use of interaction spaces on Portuguese Public Universities’ websites and Facebook pages, checking whether or not the online communication developed by these institutions values social interaction. To this end, we have developed a quantitative and qualitative research setting in the form of a multiple-case study using the structured direct observation method. We know that several significant issues have been imposed on public universities in recent decades. For a long time, Universities used unidirectional and asymmetric communication models. Organizational leaders believed that quality and rigor in teaching and research were enough to create and maintain a positive image for organizations, an understanding that is not suited to today's reality. They began to operate in an increasingly complex and competitive environment, they had to rethink the role they play in society, their mission and relationship with different audiences. In this way, Universities needed to restructure, adopt more entrepreneurial management strategies, attract new audiences and find new forms of financing and communication had to accompany the changes to provide answers to the new imposed scenario. In general, it becomes more and more relevant for organizations to be present in the online environment through spaces that not only offer information but also demonstrate the willingness to interact and dialogue with the public, which leads us to think about their existence and use by Universities, to qualify the presence of organizations and rethink about the effectiveness of interactions and possibilities for improvement. Nowadays, all Public Universities in Portugal have a website and a profile on at least one social media platform. We realize that Portuguese Universities offer spaces that enable interaction with audiences, both on websites and Facebook pages, but many of them still do not value interaction and use the new media in the same way they used the old ones, in a unidirectional way. Websites are communication tools that provide essential information for society, being representations of the University in the digital environment and, often, the first element of contact with the public. But, although all Universities provide space for online interaction, not all work effectively, since there was no response from messages sent by part of the Universities. Social media, on the other hand, are dynamic platforms, designed and centered on social interaction, which must be considered in the planning and management of digital communication. The predominant strategy adopted by Portuguese Public Universities in Facebook publications is to make content available to attract audiences to the website, producing little or no specific content for the platforms and maintaining a limited level of interaction. A different approach could bring audiences closer to Universities, encourage engagement and open new spaces for dialogue. Nowadays, it's not enough to just be present on the Internet, audiences increasingly expect organizations to listen to them, get involved and react, and this involvement is fundamental to building relationships. The monologue was replaced by the possibility of effective dialogue, with the negotiation of communication strategies between the parties and no longer passive reception. The interactions that are established between organizations and audiences in the digital environment reinforce the individual feeling of communication, recognition and trust, influencing the attitude people have towards a service or product, as well as organizational image and reputation. In addition, they represent opportunities for organizations to learn more about the audience's needs and expectations.

This study developed a designer-oriented smart home device computer-aided design tool that can help architectural designers to design smart home. This design tool is intended to incorporate smart home devices into overall spatial planning from the beginning of the planning process. Cloud computing [1] facilitates opportunities for online collaboration and coordination between individuals, between individuals and objects, and between objects, and will help speed the evolution smart home from centrally-controlled intelligent buildings to "smart living space" emphasizing distributed computation ability. This study employs (1) the theory of intelligent agents and (2) scenario-oriented design as an integrated framework for computer-aided design of smart home device. Smart home device are redefined based on agent theory. Agents' behavioral models include the five types of passive, reactive, active, interactive, and communicative; a comparison of these types provides a basis for the selection of home elements. Scenario-oriented design is employed to construct a smart living space (the AI. Living Lab.), which verifies the feasibility of the interface's operations. Finally, the resulting design methods and practical results are used to create a system development blueprint. Real life scenarios provide a basis for communication with smart home industry collaborators, enabling architectural designers to perform scenario modeling of a smart home proposal, quickly and conveniently establish a smart home information modeling system, and promote teamwork with smart home industry personnel.

The article offers an analysis of the current situation with the coronavirus in Africa. It reveals the specific features of the pandemic and the socio-political and economic consequences thereof. The author concludes that, taking exploiting the pandemic, the United States and its allies are like likely to attempt weakening the PRC’s position in Africa and preventing Russia from building up its influence. The latter, especially, in view of the success of the Russia-Africa Summit and Economic Forum held in October 2019, in Sochi. However, Washington’s grand plans on the African continent are seriously constrained by the fact that Africans have long asserted themselves as full-capacity subjects in international relations and refuse to be pawns in the intricate games between the United States, China and other players for world leadership. The coronavirus pandemic will undoubtedly change the position of the continent in the new “post-coronavirus” world, but these changes largely depend on how and with whose assistance Africans are to overcome this serious test.The paper contains the results of online opinion-polling of African experts conducted by the author of the article.The author makes an attempt to explain the “Africa phenomenon” of the coronavirus pandemic, assesses the main risks of the spread of the epidemic and the possibilities of overcoming it. Special attention is paid to new opportunities for the development of the African economy in the “post-coronavirus world”, as well as the actions of the authorities to mitigate its socio-economic consequences.The author arrives to the conclusion that African countries, while less affected by the pandemic than other regions of the world, are not satisfactorily ready to fight it. The pessimistic scenario of the spread of coronavirus infection in Africa cannot be completely ruled out, and the socio-economic consequences of the pandemic can become a very serious test for most countries of the continent. At the same time, a certain redistribution of the balance of power in the region should be expected. The nations that are able in a timely manner to offer Africa significant support in the fight against the pandemic will gain. The Russian Federation has a real chance to strengthen its positions on the continent, cooperation with which may increasingly become a priority for Moscow, given the changing model of world development.

Social networking websites (SNSs) focus on building online social networks or communities of people who share interests and activities and provide ways for users to interact with each other online. Our exploratory pilot study gauged users' receptivity to receiving health information via the SNSs they use. We presented several hypothetical scenarios and explored respondents' reactions to each of them. Consistent with other research, we found that most respondents reported using SNSs to interact with people they already know as opposed to using SNSs to meet new people. Overall, respondents were generally receptive to the scenarios we explored. Spending more time on the Internet, spending a higher percentage of one's Internet time on SNSs, and currently participating in online discussion groups were significantly associated with receptivity across several of the scenarios. These reactions suggest an association between heavier Internet use and receptivity to getting health information through this channel. The rapid growth of SNSs presents a significant opportunity to reach individuals with health communication and social marketing messages.

Worldwide increasing awareness of energy sustainability issues has been the main driver in developing the concepts of (Nearly) Zero Energy Buildings, where the reduced energy consumptions are (nearly) fully covered by power locally generated by renewable sources. At the same time, recent advances in Internet of Things technologies are among the main enablers of Smart Homes and Buildings. The transition of conventional buildings into active environments that process, elaborate and react to online measured environmental quantities is being accelerated by the aspects related to COVID-19, most notably in terms of air exchange and the monitoring of the density of occupants. In this paper, we address the problem of maximizing the energy efficiency and comfort perceived by occupants, defined in terms of thermal comfort, visual comfort and air quality. The case study of the University of Pisa is considered as a practical example to show preliminary results of the aggregation of environmental data.

Among sub-items of energy consumption in public buildings, lighting sockets play an important role in energy-saving analysis. So, the energy consumption data quality of lighting sockets is important. However, limited by the initial cost of energy monitoring platform, it is difficult to install electricity meters covering all branches and to retrofit the incompact classification electricity branches, which results in a mixture of the lighting socket energy consumption and other components. In this study, a separation methodology is proposed. First, the abnormal data in the energy monitoring platform are cleaned and screened using a clustering algorithm. Second, the average outdoor air temperature partitioning model (OATPM) method and the k-nearest neighbor (KNN) clustering algorithm method are proposed for identifying and separating the abnormal data. These two methods have complementary advantages in the best applicable scenarios, including calculation accuracy and other aspects. The verification results for three buildings show that the relative error of this separation methodology is less than 15%. Finally, this paper presents the optimization parameters of the KNN method. Through this methodology, building managers need only historical data in an energy monitoring platform to separate the combined power consumption of the lighting sockets and air-conditioning online, independent of detailed information statistics.

Recently, a growing interest has been observed in HVAC control systems based on Artificial Intelligence, to improve comfort conditions while avoiding unnecessary energy consumption. In this work, a model-free algorithm belonging to the Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) class, Soft Actor-Critic, was implemented to control the supply water temperature to radiant terminal units of a heating system serving an office building. The controller was trained online, and a preliminary sensitivity analysis on hyperparameters was performed to assess their influence on the agent performance. The DRL agent with the best performance was compared to a rule-based controller assumed as a baseline during a three-month heating season. The DRL controller outperformed the baseline after two weeks of deployment, with an overall performance improvement related to control of indoor temperature conditions. Moreover, the adaptability of the DRL agent was tested for various control scenarios, simulating changes of external weather conditions, indoor temperature setpoint, building envelope features and occupancy patterns. The agent dynamically deployed, despite a slight increase in energy consumption, led to an improvement of indoor temperature control, reducing the cumulative sum of temperature violations on average for all scenarios by 75% and 48% compared to the baseline and statically deployed agent respectively.

This paper describes the development and implementation of an electronic platform for energy management in public buildings. The developed platform prototype is based on the installation of a network of wireless sensors using the emerging Long Range (LoRa) low power long-range wireless network technology. This network is used to collect sensor data, which is stored online and manipulated to extract knowledge and generate actions toward energy saving solutions. In this process, gamification approaches were used to motivate changes in the users’ behavior towards more sustainable actions in public buildings. These actions and the associated processes can be implemented as public services, and they can be replicated to different public buildings, contributing to a more energy-sustainable world. The developed platform allows the monitoring and management of the heating/cooling, electric power consumption, and lighting levels. In order to validate the proposed electronic platform, sensor information was collected in the context of a university campus, which was used as an application scenario in public buildings.

Online anomaly detection for stream data has been explored recently, where the detector is supposed to be able to perform an accurate and timely judgment for the upcoming observation. However, due to the inherent complex characteristics of stream data, such as quick generation, tremendous volume and dynamic evolution distribution, how to develop an effective online anomaly detection method is a challenge. The main objective of this paper is to propose an adaptive online anomaly detection method for stream data. This is achieved by combining isolation principle with online ensemble learning, which is then optimized by statistic histogram. Three main algorithms are developed, i.e., online detector building algorithm, anomaly detecting algorithm and adaptive detector updating algorithm. To evaluate our proposed method, four massive datasets from the UCI machine learning repository recorded from real events were adopted. Extensive simulations based on these datasets show that our method is effective and robust against different scenarios.

The 3D Tiles specification, created by Cesium, is designed for streaming massive heterogeneous three-dimensional (3D) geospatial datasets online using WebGL technology. The program has prevailed in the WebGIS community due to its ability to visualise, interact, and style 3D objects for various scenarios, such as 3D cities, indoor environments, and point clouds. It offers a new opportunity to integrate Building Information Models (BIM) in the Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) data format with existing geospatial data in a 3D WebGIS platform with open-source implementation. As no open-source solution for converting IFC models into 3D Tiles for online visualization had yet been found, this paper explores feasible approaches and integrates a range of tools and libraries as an open-source solution for the community.

Abstract Summary Biological processes are characterized by a variety of different genomic feature sets. However, often times when building models, portions of these features are missing for a subset of the dataset. We provide a modeling framework to effectively integrate this type of heterogeneous data to improve prediction accuracy. To test our methodology, we have stacked data from the Cancer Cell Line Encyclopedia to increase the accuracy of drug sensitivity prediction. The package addresses the dynamic regime of information integration involving sequential addition of features and samples. Abstract The Erasmus + Play4Guidance (P4G) project introduces an online business game, designed to help teach entrepreneurial, transversal and mathematical skills using a real-world business environment. This paper explains how the Business Model Canvas (BMC) strategy tool facilitated student understanding of real life business development prior to playing the game. An initial mapping exercise was conducted to find out if the Business Model Canvas could transform the experience of playing the game by providing an overview of real life business strategy, and explain the crucial role that markets and customers play in business growth. As a result of the mapping exercise a workshop session was developed to ensure that students could enact the real life business scenarios presented in the game. Three different types of videos were produced and integrated into the workshop to demonstrate key entrepreneurial competencies and graphically illustrate the nine key building blocks of the BMC. Survey responses from a student cohort evidenced that the workshop was central in helping them to understand real life business strategy prior to playing the game.

The dynamic development of information and communication technologies and online marketing in the hospitality and tourism industry changes customer behavior significantly.. This article presents the research results focused on measuring the visual attention of potential clients while choosing the hotel online. Eye-tracking-based data collection followed by appropriate statistical analyses was selected to study customers' behaviour and, consequently, judge the effectiveness and impact of used marketing tools. Three scenarios selected for this study covered different clients' segments: 1/overnight business guests (on the road), 2/weekend package guests (couples), and 3/team-building groups (small companies) and their specific needs. The behaviour of the respondents was monitored in two phases: browsing and deliberation phases. Our study reveals the specifics in Middle and East European consumers' behaviour in both phases, the differences in their priorities, their personal filters used, specifics of their decision-making process, etc., compared with Noone & Robson studies from 2014 and 2016 on US customers. From the methodological point of view, the study reveals the importance of so-called scenarios since it clearly shows that preferences during the browsing phase (e.g. photos of hotels, rooms, bathrooms, its environment, surrounding landscape, etc.) depend on the simulated life situation. The differences in both groups of clients' behaviour and especially in their decision-making process are discussed in the conclusions.

Abstract. The study presents a part of the operational framework of the “Project for Infrastructure and Strategic Strengthening of the Somali National University”, funded by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation. The project, coordinated by Politecnico di Milano, aims to reconstruct the Gahayr campus of the Somali National University of Mogadishu, which is today almost destroyed due to the civil war. The preliminary phase for reconstruction is a detailed survey of the buildings and the area over which the Campus will be re-built. In a normal situation, the team in charge of the survey would have gone on-site in Mogadishu; nevertheless, the risky local conditions and the Covid-19 pandemic made it impossible to have foreign personnel on-site. Consequently, the choice was to train a local team remotely, giving them the theoretical and practical instruments to face a complete 3D survey of the area and the buildings. Harsh times cannot stop works and activities that usually need the presence of the survey team on the field. Careful planning of the activities, the online staff training and the continuous sharing of the information permitted to get high quality 3D metric results quickly and to have at disposal all dimensional and qualitative valuable information for the project, usable in real-time by the designers and architects without going directly on the site.

Energy co-simulation can be used to analyze the dynamic energy consumption of a building or a region, which is essential for decision making in the planning and management of smart cities. To increase the accessibility of energy simulation results, a dynamic online 3D city model visualization framework based on 3D Tiles is proposed in this paper. Two types of styling methods are studied, attribute-based and ID map-based. We first perform the energy co-simulation and save the results in CityGML format with EnergyADE. Then the 3D geometry data of these city objects are combined with its simulation results as attributes or just with object ID information to generate Batched 3D Models (B3DM) in 3D Tiles. Next, styling strategies are pre-defined and can be selected by end-users to show different scenarios. Finally, during the visualization process, dynamic interactions and data sources are integrated into the styling generation to support real-time visualization. This framework is implemented with Cesium. Compared with existing dynamic online 3D visualization framework such as directly styling or Cesium Language (CZML), a JSON format for describing a time-dynamic graphical scene, primarily for display in a web browser running Cesium, the proposed framework is more flexible and has higher performance in both data transmission and rendering which is essential for real-time GIS applications.

In the last few years, the monstrous fan has gained attention in this country for large space buildings and areas. The continuity of this product technology is important to allow it to be able to survive in the current and future market. However, there are limited studies on the present and future scenario of the monstrous fan, especially in Malaysia. Thus, the objective of this paper is to forecast its present technology, evaluating the market demand and future of the monstrous fan. For these reasons, an online survey was used to obtain feedback from suppliers and manufacturers to forecast the future of this product. In conclusion, the monstrous fan has been discussed and predicted, which can be beneficial for various parties including policy makers, government, business and technology players by representing a specific knowledge on the technical specificities of monstrous fans in Malaysia.

Privacy enhancing technologies (PETs) allow to achieve user’s transactions unlinkability across different online Service Providers. However, current PETs fail to guarantee unlinkability against the Identity Provider (IdP), which becomes a single point of failure in terms of privacy and security, and therefore, might impersonate its users. To address this issue, OLYMPUS EU project establishes an interoperable framework of technologies for a distributed privacy-preserving identity management based on cryptographic techniques that can be applied both to online and offline scenarios. Namely, distributed cryptographic techniques based on threshold cryptography are used to split up the role of the Identity Provider (IdP) into several authorities so that a single entity is not able to impersonate or track its users. The architecture leverages PET technologies, such as distributed threshold-based signatures and privacy attribute-based credentials (p-ABC), so that the signed tokens and the ABC credentials are managed in a distributed way by several IdPs. This paper describes the Olympus architecture, including its associated requirements, the main building blocks and processes, as well as the associated use cases. In addition, the paper shows how the Olympus oblivious architecture can be used to achieve privacy-preserving M2M offline transactions between IoT devices.
