<p class="0abstract">Practical manipulations are a core part of engineering training education systems. Remote labs are a new method used for teaching and practicing experimental manipulation using the performance of information and communication technologies. This paper presents a study of two remote labs architecture using low cost embedded systems that could be addressed to the 3rd year bachelor degree students on renewable energy and others on electronics courses. The first manipulation is based on Arduino microcontroller to monitor an irrigation system powered by photovoltaic panels. In addition, the second manipulation uses a powerful PcDuino, to control remotely a logic electronic experience. A simple interface is developed to allow students and instructors to access to these manipulations. This study is aimed to improve the present education systems in the Moroccan universities by managing the practical manipulation for a large number of students, especially in the open-access faculties. Finally, this architecture can be easily extended to other disciplines and courses.</p>

PurposeThis study examines whether a higher interest alignment between online travel agencies (OTAs; hosting platform) and hotels (business owners) will intensify review manipulation activities.Design/methodology/approachWith a panel data set collected from a Chinese online travel agency and a travel search engine, the authors develop a matching-based difference-indifference approach to examine the presence of partnership-intensified review manipulation.FindingsThe authors find that the ratings of agency's partner hotels (with a higher interest alignment) are abnormally higher than those of matched non-partner hotels (with a lower interest alignment), after they are benchmarked with their ratings on the search engine (without a partnership business model). Further, the analysis results indicate that this partnership-intensified manipulation deteriorates the hotel's sales performance because of damaged customer trust and satisfaction.Originality/valuePrevious studies implicitly assume that review manipulator is independent from the hosting platform. This is the first study examining the role of the hosting platform in review manipulations.

In this article, the author analyzes headlines on digital platforms of media sources, paying special attention to the manipulative content of the delivered messages. The research is based on the material of three websites, the authors of which manipulate the emotions of the recipients while providing information – “Tarasova Pravda“, “Naspravdi.Today”, and “Politeka”. The basic aspects of suggestive influence and manipulation of information during the speech act are defined and explained. In today’s rapidly evolving digital landscape, understanding the linguistic mechanisms of manipulation and suggestion in written texts is becoming increasingly crucial. This study not only sheds light on the deceptive methods employed in the headlines of Ukrainian-language online media resources but also highlights the importance of fostering media literacy among consumers. By enhancing awareness of manipulative tactics and promoting critical thinking skills, individuals will be better equipped to discern fact from fiction, ultimately contributing to a more well-informed society. The advancement and proliferation of cutting-edge information and communication technologies have led to an escalation in dissemination of manipulative texts. It can be posited that suggestion operates as a crucial instrument of verbal manipulation in written materials. Consequently, our investigation primarily focuses on examining manipulative texts (specifically, headlines within the context of this article) concerning their suggestive component. The research vectors for this issue encompass the linguistic analysis of manipulative texts for categorization purposes, recognition of suggestion components, exploration of linguistic methods employed for disinformation, and countermeasures against verbal manipulation. The objective of this article is to scrutinize the headlines of news articles featured on Ukrainian-language online media resources (based on materials from three websites: “Tarasova Pravda”, “Naspravdi.Today”, and “Politeka”), as well as to detect, classify, and interpret linguistic techniques of manipulation and suggestion used in messages, excluding the proportion of manipulative content. The conducted linguistic analysis based on the 100 headlines gives reason to claim that 66.67 % of the article headlines in the three news web portals we have investigated contain messages aimed at manipulating emotions – “Tarasova Pravda” (33.33 %), “Naspravdi.Today” (76.67 %), and “Politeka” (90 %).

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to focus on an online closed-loop (CL) approach for performing dynamic object manipulation (DOM) by a flexible link manipulator. Design/methodology/approach – Toward above goal, a neural network and optimal control are integrated in a closed-loop structure, to achieve a robust control for online DOM applications. Additionally, an elegant novel numerical solution method will be developed which can handle the split boundary value problem resulted from DOM mission requirements for a wide range of boundary conditions. Findings – The obtained simulation results reveal the effectiveness of both proposed innovative numerical solution technique and control structure for online object manipulation purposes using flexible manipulators. Originality/value – The object manipulation problem has previously been studied, however, for the first time its accomplishment by flexible link manipulators was addressed just in offline form considering an open-loop control structure (Tarvirdizadeh and Yousefi-Koma, 2012). As an extension of Tarvirdizadeh and Yousefi-Koma (2012), the current research, consequently, focusses on a numerical solution and a CL approach for performing DOM by a flexible link manipulator.

Introduction. Expanded digitalization widens the gap between the increasing immersion of young people in the digital space and their ability to identify, manage and resist the destructive potential of the information flow of the Internet environment. Increasing threats to personal security and improved technologies for manipulating public opinion and consciousness makes developed critical thinking skills and increased resistance to manipulative and destructive online content particularly relevant for the young generation The paper aims to determine the potential of an educational game in developing critical thinking skills among students in relation to manipulations on the Internet. Materials and methods. 147 students of Tomsk State University (Russian Federation) took part in the pilot study. Research methods were: 1) a questionnaire for self-assessment of the ability to identify manipulative techniques and assess the impact of information on own psycho-emotional state; 2) a test task for forming skills in recognizing manipulative techniques. Statistical data was processed using the Mann Whitney U test and the Wilcoxon t-test. Research results. A pilot experimental study revealed the following: 1) respondents tend to overestimate their ability to determine the manipulative potential of Internet content, as well as their ability to resist it and realize its impact on their psycho-emotional state; 2) after the game, the experimental group demonstrates increased skills in identifying all the five manipulation techniques (the number of respondents able to recognize a conspiracy theory increased by 6.8 times, emotional speech by 1.4 times; scapegoating by 7.6 times; attacking by 1.3 times, and a false dichotomy by 10.7 times); 3) in recognizing three manipulation techniques, the experimental and control groups show significant differences (p <0.001). After the game, the participants demonstrate the skills of accurately recognizing conspiracy theory, scapegoating, and false dichotomy. Conclusion. The suggested gaming practice has a high potential for developing critical thinking skills in relation to manipulation techniques on the Internet (in the context of digital interaction and information impact).

Assistive robots designed for physical interaction with objects will play an important role in assisting with mobility and fall prevention in healthcare facilities. Autonomous mobile manipulation presents a hurdle prior to safely using robots in real-life applications. In this article, we introduce a mobile manipulation framework based on model predictive control using learned dynamics models of objects. We focus on the specific problem of manipulating legged objects such as those commonly found in healthcare environments and personal dwellings (e.g., walkers, tables, chairs). We describe a probabilistic method for autonomous learning of an approximate dynamics model for these objects. In this method, we learn dynamic parameters using a small dataset consisting of force and motion data from interactions between the robot and object. Moreover, we account for multiple manipulation strategies by formulating manipulation planning as a mixed-integer convex optimization. The proposed framework considers the hybrid control system composed of (i) choosing which leg to grasp and (ii) control of continuous applied forces for manipulation. We formalize our algorithm based on model predictive control to compensate for modeling errors and find an optimal path to manipulate the object from one configuration to another. We present results for several objects with various wheel configurations. Simulation and physical experiments show that the obtained dynamics models are sufficiently accurate for safe and collision-free manipulation. When combined with the proposed manipulation planning algorithm, the robot successfully moves the object to the desired pose while avoiding any collision.

Purpose – This paper aims to explore the effect on consumer responses of firms’ manipulating online reviews based on review valence (positive vs negative) and the relationship between consumer trust and purchase intentions. Design/methodology/approach – This study was designed as an experimental study using a scenario method, and data were randomly collected from 2,080 online shoppers in the USA. Findings – Findings reveal that the unfair business practice of manipulating online postings considerably undermined consumer trust toward online reviews. Consumer trust in reviews thus seems to be a critical predictor of purchase intentions, which was strengthened even when respondents knew that online reviews were manipulated. Practical implications – Companies may thus need to focus on maintaining transparency and truthfulness in online consumer reviews rather than artificially improving ratings scores or feedback levels. Originality/value – This study was the first attempt to provide empirical supports that the level of consumer trust in online reviews significantly decreased after consumers were informed that the review content had been manipulated by a company in both the positive and negative conditions. These results also support previous research articulating the negativity effect.

Purpose To influence consumer perceptions, firms often manipulate online product reviews on their own websites or third-party forums by anonymously adding positive reviews, deleting unfavorable reviews or offering rewards to encourage favorable reviews. This study aims to investigate consumer perceptions of online review deceptions and how these perceptions influence their subsequent purchase behavior. In particular, consumers’ awareness, suspicion and detection are studied and specific manipulation tactics are evaluated. Design/methodology/approach Both qualitative and quantitative studies are relied upon to understand consumer perceptions of online review deceptions. In-depth interviews with 16 experienced online shoppers were conducted to collect the illustrative accounts concerning consumer awareness of online review deceptions, their suspicion, detection and evaluation of different manipulation tactics. A survey of 199 consumers was then followed to validate and corroborate the findings from the qualitative study and generalize the interview results onto the general public. Findings The results from in-depth interviews suggest that consumers take a negative view toward online review deceptions, but the degree of negativity varies across different manipulation tactics. Moreover, different types of manipulations vary in terms of perceived deceptiveness, ease of detection and unethicality, as well as their effect on consumer purchase intention and perceived helpfulness of online product reviews. The findings from the survey further confirmed the qualitative findings. Practical implications The findings have a number of meaningful managerial implications for industry associations and policymakers on whether and how to regulate online review deceptions. Originality/value This study applies and extends information manipulation theory and deception detection literature to an online context to increase the richness of the relevant theories. It is among the first to empirically investigate online review deceptions from a consumer’s perspective, as opposed to a firm’s perspective as previous studies have done.

The paper deals with manipulative means in clickbait headlines of online media. The aim of the article is to distinguish and examine the used in implicit clickbaits manipulative means which help to cultivate the reader’s interest and make them pass to the article. The relevance of the current investigation is determined by a wide spread of clickbaits in media cyberspace, the users’ negative attitude to them and their constant evolvement for concealment and formal conformation to the criteria of non-blocked headlines. The analysed material comprises the clickbait headlines in online media whose announcements are presented on large Russian news aggregators. The material was selected within 2018-2022. The overall number of investigated materials is 3050 units. The material is analysed using such methods as introspection, conceptual modelling, unselected and purposive samplings and interpretative analysis. The analysed material shows that according to the degree of connection with the article clickbat headlines can be divided into 4 types: 1) clickbait headlines of “universal” wording applicable to texts with any content; 2) clickbait headlines which are not connected with the content of the article, 3) clickbait headlines connected with the content of the article via their non-sensational parts; 4) clickbait headlines reflecting the content of the article. Three first types are considered obvious clickbaits while the last one is an implicit clickbait. The manipulative means which give an opportunity to make a clickbait implicit include manipulation with word meanings, stylistic and grammatical manipulations, provoking logical mistakes, reticence, overstatement, neglecting the time factor, taking a statement out of context, substitution of concepts, assimilation of headlines to typical associations.

This availability inspired in the last years a number of reactions from researchers, designers, and artists that, using different visual manipulations techniques, have attempted at repurposing this material to add meaning and design new perspectives with specific intentions. Three different approaches are described here: the design of interfaces for exploring satellite footage in novel ways, the analysis of urban esthetics through the visual manipulation of collections of user-generated contents, and the enrichment of geo-based datasets with the selection and rearrangement of web imagery.

Streszczenie:
An approach to telerobotic system organization with manipulator variable parameters is developed. It is intended for solution of manipulation problems when fast transportation operations are combined with high-precision positioning operations. Based on previous research, manipulator gain was chosen as a means for system quality control. It was proposed that the human operator should personally adjust the robot parameters in compliance with situation requirements. Besides such direct parameter adjustment, another implementation of this concept based on indirect adjustment (such as by analog circuit) was also developed. An additional channel of parameter control was introduced into the system in these cases. A new hand-controller design and a method for synthesis of such system algorithms were also developed. The ground has thus been laid for the kinematic coordinate-parameter control for the main regimes of telerobot work. The described approach results in the organization of effective online systems with sufficiently simple control algorithms. By means of testing, the efficiency of these systems is shown.

The customer is one of the most significant participants of economic processes. However, not all purchasing decisions that consumers make can be deemed as rational ones. The irrationality that accompanies consumers when shopping arises from the human psyche and personality, where conscious acts of making choices merge with external stimuli (e.g. manipulations employed by retail outlets). The basic aim of this study has been to determine the awareness of manipulative techniques used in shops among consumers, and then to try and evaluate their effectiveness. The study is an example of survey research and it used an online survey as a research tool. The study was participated by 194 respondents. The research results show that according to the respondents the manipulations most often used are: psychological pricing (‘odd prices’), promoting a product by offering some tangible benefits (enhancing the appeal of a product) and placing products near checkouts in order to induce impulse buying. As for the effectiveness of the analysed techniques, it coincides with their intensity. Apart from the ones mentioned above (manipulating prices, promoting sales and checkout zone), a proper and interesting arrangement of the shop’s layout is worth attention. The respondents declared that fragrance marketing was demonstrably less effective. Most respondents do not consider manipulations targeting the behaviour of clients as unethical actions. There were no distinctly negative attitudes to the applied manipulative techniques. Based on the survey results, it can be concluded that manipulations of customer behaviour in retail outlets are very common, if not standard actions. Customers understand how such manipulations work, are at least to some extent vulnerable to them and, most importantly, are satisfied with them. The respondents see manipulations in the context of benefits that can be gained rather than the costs they can incur.

The Internet has evolved into a ubiquitous and indispensable digital environment in which people communicate, seek information, and make decisions. Despite offering various benefits, online environments are also replete with smart, highly adaptive choice architectures designed primarily to maximize commercial interests, capture and sustain users’ attention, monetize user data, and predict and influence future behavior. This online landscape holds multiple negative consequences for society, such as a decline in human autonomy, rising incivility in online conversation, the facilitation of political extremism, and the spread of disinformation. Benevolent choice architects working with regulators may curb the worst excesses of manipulative choice architectures, yet the strategic advantages, resources, and data remain with commercial players. One way to address some of this imbalance is with interventions that empower Internet users to gain some control over their digital environments, in part by boosting their information literacy and their cognitive resistance to manipulation. Our goal is to present a conceptual map of interventions that are based on insights from psychological science. We begin by systematically outlining how online and offline environments differ despite being increasingly inextricable. We then identify four major types of challenges that users encounter in online environments: persuasive and manipulative choice architectures, AI-assisted information architectures, false and misleading information, and distracting environments. Next, we turn to how psychological science can inform interventions to counteract these challenges of the digital world. After distinguishing among three types of behavioral and cognitive interventions—nudges, technocognition, and boosts—we focus on boosts, of which we identify two main groups: (a) those aimed at enhancing people’s agency in their digital environments (e.g., self-nudging, deliberate ignorance) and (b) those aimed at boosting competencies of reasoning and resilience to manipulation (e.g., simple decision aids, inoculation). These cognitive tools are designed to foster the civility of online discourse and protect reason and human autonomy against manipulative choice architectures, attention-grabbing techniques, and the spread of false information.

Purpose Prior research established several important influences on the representation of women in policing, using a variety of secondary and primary data. The purpose of this paper is to examine how experimental manipulation of online recruitment materials impacts potential applicants. Design/methodology/approach The study relied on a census of 11 criminal justice courses taught at a public university, asking students to respond to an experimental vignette instrument (n=174). The 3×2 experimental vignette involved manipulation of two variables: the identification of recruits with diversity language (“individuals,” “women and men” or “a diverse group of individuals”) and mention or absence of discussion of physical fitness requirements. Findings Results largely run counter to prior research concerning women in policing, with women actually indicating increased probability of providing their contact information when encountering vignettes with physical fitness requirements. Originality/value This study demonstrates that small manipulations of recruitment content can have significant and gendered impact on potential applicants. This paper provides a foundation for empirical study of how changes in online recruitment materials impact a variety of relevant outcomes relating to applicant behaviors.

An Internet newsmagazine was created to ascertain effects of three dimensions of news salience—magnitude, likelihood, and immediacy of events—on selective news exposure. In an overview, leads of half the articles were manipulated along the salience dimensions (low vs. high). Remaining leads and all articles were held constant. While readers sampled articles, their selective exposure was automatically recorded. Independent manipulation of salience dimensions resulted in increased exposure to associated articles for all three dimensions. Their joint manipulation yielded the same results for magnitude and likelihood. The absence of interactions in the joint manipulation suggests additive dimension effects.

Purpose. The article is devoted to the identification of manipulative headlines in the media space of Ukrainian-language online publications in 2020 and the analysis of manipulative technologies applied to them. The purpose of the article is to identify manipulative technologies applied to headlines in the modern Ukrainian-language media space.Methods. To achieve this goal, the paper uses appropriate research methods: the method of continuous sampling for the selection of manipulative media headlines that occur in online publications; method of content analysis to study the implicative content of manipulative titles of publications of Ukrainian online publications in 2020. Results. The title in the online edition is a communicative unit that performs a number of functions: nominative-informational, advertising-expressive, graphic-distinctive.Manipulative technologies used by journalists and editors for verbal design of headlines of materials published in online publications are analyzed. Among them – the use of stereotypes, labeling, repetition of information, anonymous authority, statement of fact, distraction, the principle of contrast, psychological shock.Conclusions. As a result of the content analysis, which was to identify the implicative content of manipulative titles of Ukrainian online publications in 2020, the authors of this investigation found that journalists and editors productively use manipulative technologies that increase clickability and, consequently, bring profit to owners media. But there is a trend: the more actively mass media use these technologies, i.e. the clickability increases, the lower the quality of information content in the media space. Poor performance of the main function of mass media in society – information – causes a violation of the process of socio-political communication. The analyzed techniques create manipulative content, the purpose of which is to attract the attention of media consumers (the main thing is the advertising-expressive function of headlines), which play an important role in the media space, because they disseminate information on social networks or orally.Key words: manipulation, media manipulation, manipulation technology, content.

Americans are pervasively exposed to social media, news, and online content. Some of this content is designed to be deliberately deceptive and manipulative. However, it is interspersed amongst other content from friends and family, advertising, and legitimate news. Filtering content violates key societal values of freedom of expression and inquiry. Taking no action, though, leaves users at the mercy of individuals and groups who seek to use both single articles and complex patterns of content to manipulate how Americans consume, act, work, and even think. Warning labels, which do not block content but instead aid the user in making informed consumption decisions, have been proposed as a potential solution to this dilemma. Ideally, they would respect the autonomy of users to determine what media they consume while combating intentional deception and manipulation through its identification to the user. This paper considers the perception of Americans regarding the use of warning labels to alert users to potentially deceptive content. It presents the results of a population representative national study and analysis of perceptions in terms of key demographics.

Abstract Disinformation represents a pressing issue in the context of security and politics in the region (not only) of Central and Eastern Europe. With the conflict in Ukraine, European virtual space was flooded with online media offering alternative explanations concerning the situation in that country. So-called alternative media developed into trusted sources of information for part of society. Therefore, this paper analyzes in-depth the techniques of manipulation they use; in other words, the aim of the paper is to deconstruct their power over peoples’ hearts and minds. Through the case of the Czech Republic, we demonstrate modernized manipulation of public opinion based on a selective choice of topics and stories combined with properly chosen manipulative techniques controlling emotions and relativity.

Streszczenie:
Small-variance asymptotics is emerging as a useful technique for inference in large-scale Bayesian non-parametric mixture models. This paper analyzes the online learning of robot manipulation tasks with Bayesian non-parametric mixture models under small-variance asymptotics. The analysis yields a scalable online sequence clustering (SOSC) algorithm that is non-parametric in the number of clusters and the subspace dimension of each cluster. SOSC groups the new datapoint in low-dimensional subspaces by online inference in a non-parametric mixture of probabilistic principal component analyzers (MPPCA) based on a Dirichlet process, and captures the state transition and state duration information online in a hidden semi-Markov model (HSMM) based on a hierarchical Dirichlet process. A task-parameterized formulation of our approach autonomously adapts the model to changing environmental situations during manipulation. We apply the algorithm in a teleoperation setting to recognize the intention of the operator and remotely adjust the movement of the robot using the learned model. The generative model is used to synthesize both time-independent and time-dependent behaviors by relying on the principles of shared and autonomous control. Experiments with the Baxter robot yield parsimonious clusters that adapt online with new demonstrations and assist the operator in performing remote manipulation tasks.

Research has shown that face-to-face victimization is a risk factor for the online victimization of adolescents, but no prior study has examined and compared four forms of face-to-face victimization (physical victimization, verbal victimization, social manipulation, and attacks on property) as significant correlates of general online victimization and sexual online victimization among adolescents. This original study involved 794 adolescents (483 males and 311 females), aged 12 to 18 years (M = 14.49, SD = 1.90) from four middle schools in Hong Kong. The participants completed a self-report questionnaire consisting of three parts: the Multidimensional Peer Victimization Scale, the Online Victimization Scale, and demographic items. Verbal victimization and social manipulation were found to be significant correlates of general online victimization; in contrast, physical victimization and attacks on property were significant correlates of sexual online victimization. These findings may help professionals and educators to develop effective prevention and intervention strategies for preventing the cycle of victimization between physical and online platforms as well as reducing the suicide risk and crises among at-risk victimized adolescents.

Dexterous manipulation of dual-arm robots in unstructured environments is very useful. Programming a dual-arm industrial robot to efficiently complete dexterous tasks, however, is especially challenging due to the complexity of its inverse kinematics, motion planning, dual-arm coordination with self-collision avoidance, and so on. This paper presents a systematic solution to accurately manipulate a dual-arm industrial robot on-site via light-weight wearable devices. In the developed system, the human operator directly drives the robot through the human arms motions tracked by the combination of inertial measurement units and handheld joystick controllers. A proper motion retargeting method with self-collision avoidance is used to enable the user to manipulate the robot directly through intuitive arm motions within a comfortable range and ensure the task manipulation with safety in unstructured environments. The developed system has been tested with various tasks, such as the manipulation of objects of different shapes, dexterous turn-over, and dual-arm coordination. Compared with the existing telerobotic systems, the developed system with simultaneous 14 degree-of-freedom teleoperation directly driven by light-weight wearable devices is able to handle more dexterous and accurate manipulation tasks with the capability of fast deployment and self-collision awareness. Such a solution could pave the way for online dual-arm robot programming on efficient manipulation skills transfer in the future.

Abstract Dexterous object manipulation is a hallmark of human evolution and a critical skill for everyday activities. A previous work has used a grasping context that predominantly elicits memory-based control of digit forces by constraining where the object should be grasped. For this “constrained” grasping context, the primary motor cortex (M1) is involved in storage and retrieval of digit forces used in previous manipulations. In contrast, when choice of digit contact points is allowed (“unconstrained” grasping), behavioral studies revealed that forces are adjusted, on a trial-to-trial basis, as a function of digit position. This suggests a role of online feedback of digit position for force control. However, despite the ubiquitous nature of unconstrained hand–object interactions in activities of daily living, the underlying neural mechanisms are unknown. Using noninvasive brain stimulation, we found the role of primary motor cortex (M1) and somatosensory cortex (S1) to be sensitive to grasping context. In constrained grasping, M1 but not S1 is involved in storing and retrieving learned digit forces and position. In contrast, in unconstrained grasping, M1 and S1 are involved in modulating digit forces to position. Our findings suggest that the relative contribution of memory and online feedback modulates sensorimotor cortical interactions for dexterous manipulation.

The proliferation of online services has facilitated the widespread dissemination of false information, commonly known as fake news. Efforts to combat this issue include fact-checking, but the substantial costs and efforts involved hinder its broad implementation. While governments attempt direct regulation and penalties for false information, their effectiveness is limited in addressing the rapidly evolving landscape of misinformation. The Media Arbitration Commission, until now, has primarily focused on news-type content from established media entities, which is a narrow scope. However, there are ongoing discussions about extending its jurisdiction to cover entities beyond traditional media. The Korea Communications Standards Commission plays a role in regulating illegal online content. However, categorizing false manipulated information as illegal could potentially infringe on individual freedom of expression. Domestically, companies respond to false manipulation information within the framework of the Information and Communication Network Act. On the global stage, companies like Meta and YouTube internally regulate and remove such content. The legislative models of Germany's Network Enforcement Act and France's Information Manipulation Struggle Act provide valuable insights into addressing false manipulated information. Given the unique nature of false manipulation information, it's worth exploring legislative alternatives that establish a central response portal, curtail the impact of misinformation, promote fact-checking, and enhance user media literacy. Both domestic and foreign legislative experiences can contribute to creating effective strategies.

Manipulation defines many of our experiences as a consumer, including subtle nudges and overt advertising campaigns that seek to gain our attention and money. With the advent of digital services that can continuously optimize online experiences to favor stakeholder requirements, increasingly designers and developers make use of "dark patterns"-forms of manipulation that prey on human psychology-to encourage certain behaviors and discourage others in ways that present unequal value to the end user. In this paper, we provide an account of end user perceptions of manipulation that builds on and extends notions of dark patterns. We report on the results of a survey of users conducted in English and Mandarin Chinese (n=169), including follow-up interviews from nine survey respondents. We used a card sorting method to support thematic analysis of responses from each cultural context, identifying both qualitatively-supported insights to describe end users' felt experiences of manipulative products and a continuum of manipulation. We further support this analysis through a descriptive analysis of survey results and the presentation of examples from the interviews. We conclude with implications for future research, considerations for public policy, and guidance on how to further empower and give users autonomy in their experiences with digital services.
