Different elements of weather, such as wind speed, wind direction, precipitation and temperature are very important regulators of bird migration. Weather conditions also play role on the body condition such as body mass and the deposited fat. In this study we selected four warbler species to examine the impact of different weather variables on their spring and autumn migration timing and their body condition in one of the most extreme weather areas of the Earth, at Lake Baikal in Siberia. We also studied the changes in body mass and fat reserves during the spring and autumn migration periods of these species. For the analyses, we used ringing data of 2471 birds from five spring and five autumn seasons during 2015–2019. According to our results, it can be stated that the weather did not have a significant association with the migration timing of the studied warblers, perhaps due to the geographical location of the study site. However, the body mass and the fat reserves of the birds increased during unsuitable weather conditions because of the increased energy requirements. Birds generally migrate with low fat reserves, which is due to the fact that this area is not an important stopover site for these species.

Habitat preferences and foraging strategies affect population-level space use and are therefore crucial to understanding population change and implementing spatial conservation and management actions. We investigated the breeding season habitat preference and foraging site fidelity of the under-studied and threatened, Baltic Sea population of Caspian Terns (Hydroprogne caspia). Using GPS devices, we tracked 20 adult individuals at two breeding colonies, in Sweden and Finland, from late incubation through chick-rearing. Analyzing foraging movements during this period, we describe trip characteristics for each colony, daily metrics of effort, habitat use, and foraging site fidelity. We found that daily time spent away from the colony increased throughout the season, with colony-level differences in terms of distance travelled per day. In general, terns selected shallow waters between 0–5 meters in depth with certain individuals using inland lakes for foraging. We show, for the first time, that individual Caspian Terns are faithful to foraging sites throughout the breeding season, and that individuals are highly repeatable in their strategies regarding foraging site fidelity. These results fill important knowledge gaps for this at-risk population, and extend our general knowledge of the breeding season foraging ecology of this widespread species.

The Siberian Grouse (Falcipennis falcipennis), which is endemic to the “dark-needle” taiga of the Russian Far East, is one of the least studied grouse species in the world. We examined post-breeding habitat selection of Siberian Grouse and contrasted it with that of the better examined Hazel Grouse (Tetrastes bonasia) in two areas near Komsomolsk na Amure, Russia. To infer species-specific preferences, we used field sampling, logistic regression, and AIC model selection, and compared late summer habitats of Siberian Grouse and Hazel Grouse in a mountain- and hilly area in the dark needle taiga. Our study is the first to explain Siberian Grouse habitat relationships with an empirical modelling approach. Results indicate proportions of coniferous/ pioneer trees forest and rejuvenation to be the most important covariates separating Siberian and Hazel Grouse observation sites in forests from both areas. Siberian Grouse tended to select sites with low proportions of pioneer trees and rejuvenation but availability of dwarf shrubs. Bunchberry (Cornus canadensis) appeared to be of high importance for the presence of Siberian Grouse in both regions. Hazel Grouse were common in places dominated by pioneer trees with high canopy cover, and high proportions of grass/herb cover. Hazel Grouse also occurred more often in forest sites with dense vertical layering and rejuvenation. Modern forestry, which results in increasing amounts of forests at younger successional stages, is likely to favour the Hazel Grouse at the expense of the Siberian Grouse.

Survival of adults is a key demographic parameter affecting avian population dynamics. In urban areas, e.g., city parks, birds stay in winter in large numbers where they have access to a multitude of food sources due to human activities, which is one of the key factors that attract birds into the cities. Our study estimates apparent survival of mallard ducks Anas platyrhynchos between non-breeding seasons in a small town in the coldest region in north-eastern Poland between 2005 and 2017. We found lower survival estimates for females (juveniles: 0.54; adults: 0.59) than males (juveniles: 0.76; adults: 0.72) and probabilities of resighting individuals in the next non-breeding season were higher if the bird was resighted in the study area during the prior breeding period. Thus, we conclude that sedentary mallards from the local urban population have relatively high survival, which may be explained by lower pressure from raptors, lack of hunting and higher winter temperatures in the urban site. Additionally, winter temperature was negatively related to resighting probability in the next non-breeding season. Resighting probability was time-dependent with a bimodal pattern with maximal estimates of 0.48 in 2007/2008 and 0.98 in 2013/2014, 0.98 in 2014/2015, 1.00 in 2015/2016. These results are most likely related to volunteers’ activity that increased due to organized official competition with special awards during those seasons. Considering the fact that the type of ring (metal or plastic coloured) significantly influenced the probabilities of resighting of individuals, it is recommended that apparent survival studies on birds be conducted using colour rings. Moreover, we encourage to collect more capture-mark-recapture data to enable accurate estimations of duck survival, which not the least is a prerequisite for successful management and conservation efforts.

It is estimated that millions of birds globally die due to collisions with glass surfaces. In order to reduce this mortality, it is essential to provide an objective assessment of the effectiveness of bird-friendly preventive methods. Several types of opaque films and stickers are available nowadays and can be highly effective in protecting birds from fatal collisions. However, by being visible to the human eye, they can affect the users’ quality of view from within protected spaces. Products that take advantage of the birds' ability to see ultraviolet light seem to offset these impediments. This study determines if UV-reflective BirdShades film prevents birds from collisions with glass in natural environmental conditions. We monitored eight glass bus stops, where we had previously recorded high numbers of birds collisions. On four of them, we applied UV film, and the other four bus stops were used as control. A generalized additive mixed model showed a significant interaction between time (before vs. after) and film UV treatment (control vs. treated). Before the treatment, the number of collisions tended to be higher at treated bus shelters than control. However, this significantly changed after the treatment, suggesting that UV film reduces bird glass collision rate over 5-fold. Our study is the first worldwide that tested UV film on glass shelters and supports a conclusion that the UV film efficiently reduces the risk of bird collision.

Oligosaccharides and polysaccharides have different effects on the morphology and production of secondary metabolites by Penicillium chrysogenum P2 (ATCC 48271). Addition Of oligosaccharides, derived from sodium alginate and locust bean gum, to submerged cultures of P. chrysogenum P2, at milligram per litre concentration (150 mgL-1), increased secondary metabolite levels and spore production, caused changes in morphology and gerRiination of spores, and affected the production of Reactive Oxygen Species. The source of the oligosaccharides controlled their effects on the cultures. Oligosaccharides when added to submerged cultures of P. chrysogenum P2 increased both penicillin G and extracellular levels of 6-aminopenicillanic acid concentrations. The oligosaccharides had no significant effects on biomass levels. Locust bean gum-derived oligosaccharides (mannan oligosaccharides, DP 5-8), showed the highest levels of enhancement in both penicillin G and 6-aminopenicillanic acid concentrations. Sodium alginate-derived oligosaccharides, (oligoguluronate, DP 7 and oligomannuronate, DP 7), also induced elicitation of penicillin G and 6-aminopenicillanic acid. Oligomannuronate was shown to be more effective than oligoguluronate. In P. chrysogenum P2 cultures mannan, oligomannuronate and oligoguluronate oligosaccharides enhanced yields of penicillin G by 101%, 78% and 59%, respectively. Addition of mannan, oligomannuronate and oligoguluronate oligosaccharides enhanced the levels of 6- aminopenicillanic acid by 39%, 26% and 19%, respectively. The addition of oligosaccharides and polysaccharides to spores of P. chrysogenum P2 in liquid medium had varying (inhibitory or stimulatory) effects on germination, germ-tube and clump development. The addition of oligosaccharides to submerged cultures of P. chrysogenum P2 showed effects on clump size and hyphal tip numbers. Mannan oligosaccharides had the greatest effect on morphology followed by oligomannuronate and oligoguluronate oligosaccharides. Oligosaccharides also speeded-up the sporulation and increased the concentration of spores of P. chrysogenum P2 in liquid cultures. Mannan oligosaccharides had the greatest effect followed by oligomannuronate and oligoguluronate oligosaccharides. 8-aminonaphthalene-1,3,6-trisulphonate-tagged oligosaccharide studies showed that the oligosaccharides pass through the cell wall of P. chrysogenum P2 suggesting a possible mechanism through modulation of gene function. The elicitation pattern was shown to be similar to untagged oligosaccharides. Oligosaccharides and polysaccharides were shown to inhibit production of Reactive Oxygen Species in P. chrysogenum P2. The highest level of inhibition was elicited by mannan followed by oligornannuronate and oligoguluronate oligosaccharides, and then locust bean gum and alginate. The results of the study showed the potential of oligosaccharides as elicitors of secondary metabolites in P. chrysogenum P2 as a filamentous fungus model. Understanding the elicitation mechanism could provide routes for ftirther exploitation of the potential of filamentous fungi in production of commercial products.

Wave scattering from periodic arrays is ubiquitous in applied mathematics, and has received a great deal of attention over the past century, not least due to the physical significance of understanding the reflection and transmission of plane waves from such arrays in the contexts of electromagnetic waves, acoustics, water waves and elasticity. The aim of the thesis is to develop an accurate and efficient numerical method to solve for the reflection and transmission of an acoustic plane wave from arrays of arbitrary shaped obstacles that have an axis of symmetry aligned in a direction perpendicular to the array. We are particularly interested in the difficult case when the characteristic length scale of the scatterers, and the periodic spacing of the array are of the same order of magnitude as the wavelength of the incident wave. It is shown that the boundary value problem for the infinite array can be reduced to an integral equation over a central representative cell containing a single scatterer, which can then be solved using the boundary element method. Particular attention is paid to the convergence of the resulting periodic Green's function. Using established methods to calculate the reflection and transmission coefficients, we develop a new method to increase the rate of convergence of the periodic Green's function in both two and three dimensions.

Static magnetic field (MF) has a range of applications in pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries from medical devices and tissue engineering to wastewater treatment. The effect of MF on microbial cultures has been investigated by some researchers. However, the findings have been inconsistent. Extensive, systematic and comprehensive investigations are needed before potential application of MF in the industry. The aim of this research was to investigate the effect of MF on Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial strains for production of industrially viable products. To this end, an MF generator (MFG) was coupled with small-scale 100 mL shaken flasks (SFs) and bench-top 2 L stirred tank bioreactors (STRs). The effect of MF on two Gram-positive (Bacillus licheniformis NCIMB 8874 and Bacillus subtilis NCTC 3610) and one Gram-negative (Pseudomonas putida KT2440) bacterial strains was investigated with focus on production of two industrially viable products (bacitracin A and polyhydroxybutyrate (P(3HB)). P(3HB) was chosen as a valuable product of recent interest, produced by both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, making it a good candidate for this research. Bacitracin A was chosen as a model antibiotic produced by B. licheniformis. Experiments were carried out in SF cultures of B. licheniformis with circulation rate of 10 mL. min-1 through MFG producing 28 mT static MF. While there was no notable difference in the specific growth rate between the test and the control cultures, a decrease in the highest concentration of bacitracin A by 23% was observed. Subsequently, the experiment was extended to 2 L STRs with the same circulation rate (10 mL. min-1), but at two MF intensities of 28 mT and 10 mT. The former, showed no notable effect on bacitracin A production or cell growth. The latter experiment, however, resulted in 27% increase in the highest bacitracin A concentration. As bacitracin A concentration in the culture medium started to decrease due to unfavourable alkaline conditions, the next fermentation was carried out under pH control at 6-7. In this fermentation, bacitracin A concentration continued to increase in both MF exposed and control cultures without a notable difference between the two. However, substrate uptake, growth profile and total carbohydrate concentrations changed considerably. These changes suggest a shift in cellular metabolism leading possibly to biosynthesis of other products including extracellular polymeric substances. The STR system was then coupled with MFG of 18 and 28 mT intensities at a circulation rate of 10 mL. min-1, and used for production of P(3HB) by B. subtilis and P. putida. Neither of the two MF intensities led to any considerable changes in growth profile, cell morphology or P(3HB) production in B. subtilis STR system. On the other hand, a considerable change in morphology was observed in P. putida cultures. Also, P(3HB) concentration in the culture exposed to MF increased by 15% under 18 mT and by 29% under 28 mT. These novel findings suggest a great scope for further investigations of this system for potential industrial applications.

Television production’s ‘hidden labour’ lies concealed behind what we see on our screens. This thesis investigates the creation of The League of Gentlemen, a show that is considered a ‘special moment in television’, unpacking the end product and mapping the critical elements within the show’s creation process, to make this ‘hidden labour’ visible. It examines the The League’s production ecology to understand how this cultural breakthrough came to be, and contributes to broader discussions about the BBC’s broadcasting environment and comedy production in the 1990s. This thesis is the first study of The League that combines a detailed textual analysis with production studies, media history and media anthropology. Through its multi-method approach this study yields new insights into the creation process of The League. Through a very detailed analysis, this case study illuminates how the initial idea and the key textual devices (location, character and narrative) developed through various media and creation stages, revealing who and what shaped this process. Through original interviews it gives a voice to various contributors, including the costume designer and the producers, who are often overlooked because of the strong authorial signature of the writers/performers. Therefore, the study sheds light onto some of the ‘hidden professions of television’ and updates our understanding of the creation process and the final product in the light of these new insights. The study of The League’s creation process illustrates that each production is unique and faces different challenges. It reveals that despite major structural and cultural changes at the BBC in the 1990s, which some considered a crisis inimical to creativity, innovation and craftsmanship, there was still room for innovation and creative freedom. The 1990s were not simply a period of crisis in BBC programme making, as some commentators suggested at the time, but an exemplar of how the production ecology was changing. As this study shows, while comedy production is clearly constrained by larger organisational structures and strategies, it also depends crucially on the individuals involved in making comedy, and how they work together. This study highlights that culture production is the sum of all the small moments that happen on the ground - in the corridors of media organisations, in TV studios, during phone conversations - and during the many little decisions made by thinking, feeling and interacting individuals. It is the coming together of these small moments that shape what we see on our screens.

This study was designed for the development of novel methods for isothermal amplification of nucleic acids using phi29 and Bst DNA polymerases in the detection and characterization of pathogenic viruses of the respiratory tract. High Resolution Melting (HRM) analysis was used in this study for screening similar sequences to avoid unnecessary sequencing from genomic libraries and detection of common pathogenic viruses of the respiratory tract. Four different structures of DNA linear double stranded DNA (dsDNA, 48 kb), linear single stranded DNA (ssDNA, 3.6 kb), small circular dsDNA (2.6 kb) and a large circular dsDNA (8.6 kb) were used as representatives of different types of viral nucleic acids for the evaluation of phi29-amplification at limiting concentrations. Phi29-amplification of linear ds, large and small circular dsDNA could be amplified 10-100-fold but ssDNA could not be amplified at all. Alternative protocols were adapted for ligating ssDNA and dsDNA to construct large concatemers for efficient phi29-amplification. Phi29-amplification of ssDNA was found to increase >10-fold when it was ligated using T4 RNA ligase in the presence of a large excess of background ssDNA compared to that in the absence of background ssDNA. T4 DNA ligase-mediated phi29-amplification of double stranded cDNA (dscDNA) was found to increase >105-fold compared to non-ligated dscDNA. CircLigaseä II ssDNA ligase was used for circularization of ssDNA and aid phi29-amplification. CircLigaseä II ssDNA ligase-mediated phi29-amplification of ssDNA was found to increase >107-fold compared to non-ligated sscDNA. A method named RT-Bst was developed for simultaneous reverse transcription and Bst DNA polymerase amplification of cDNA in the same reaction. In a qualitative PCR assay, RT-Bst was found to be more efficient than the QuantiTectä reverse transcription kit (QIAGEN, Crawley, UK). The RT-Bst method was used for amplification of cDNA in 70 nasopharyngeal samples for detection of a panel of 12 pathogenic viruses of the respiratory tract. The performance of multiplex RT-Bst PCR detection of pathogenic viruses was comparable to that of multiplex one-step RT-PCR (performed in this study) and more efficient than immunofluorescence (performed by a hospital diagnostic laboratory). The RT-Bst protocol was further modified using tailed random primers to develop another protocol for whole genome amplification designated RT-Bst Single Primer Amplification (RT-Bst SPA) as a cheaper alternative to sequence independent single primer amplification. HRM analysis was used in this study to demonstrate its application for low cost screening of similar sequences to avoid unnecessary sequencing task from whole genome libraries prepared from MS2 RNA and tissue culture media positive for influenza B and hRSV. HRM analysis was also used for rapid and low cost detection of common pathogenic viruses of the respiratory tract. It is proposed that RT-Bst and RT-Bst SPA have the potential for sequence independent amplification of RNA sequences for subsequent multiplex PCR detection, and other downstream applications. HRM analysis can be used for rapid and cost effective detection of pathogenic viruses of the respiratory tract. However, a more detailed study will be required for further optimization and validation of the developed protocols for appropriate commercialization as kits.

This thesis explores the politics of representation in Indian media with special focus on news television’s portrayal of issues concerning Christian community. The portrayal of communities is studied in relation to the dynamics of engagement between India’s rapidly expanding news television and the growing Hindutva (Hinduness) movement which espouses an exclusivist and majoritarian ideology, demanding a Hindu nation for Hindus. In its endeavor to understand this complex issue it focuses on India’s two national news networks – Aaj Tak in Hindi, the country’s most popular news broadcaster, and Headlines Today, a leading English-language network – locating their ways of engagement with the Hindutva movement. The thesis, which looks at the nationalist movement’s involvement with the print media and cinema in India, claims that the socio-political situation in the country helped the Hindutva groups to realign the threads of nationalism with that of Hindu nationalism by re-organizing and redefining their ideology to suggest a particular version of national identity and citizenship. The news television, while passing through various stages of evolution, has been engaging with a number of dominant ideologies. In recent decades, the right-wing Hindu ideology has been a powerful force in Indian politics and its engagement with news television, particularly Hindi language television, has been visible in the media narratives on various socio-political and cultural issues. The thesis claims that news television’s treatment of communal issues has helped the creation of a Hindutva public sphere. In the process, the thesis argues, India’s minority communities have been threatened, having to bear the brunt of this new alignment, undermining the secular tradition of India and contributing to anti-minority rhetoric. Drawing on a range of methods – including focus groups of news consumers, face-to-face, in-depth interviews with media personnel, as well as detailed content analysis of news reports, the thesis argues that Hindi news television, driven by market values, created new avenues and vistas for the Hindu nationalists to engage with the public. News television’s association with the Hindutva groups, it is suggested, helped construct a new national identity and a new Indian-ness, conforming to Hindutva ideology.

Chinese hamster ovary cell lines are commonly used as host for production of recombinant protein both in research and in the biotech industry. Recombinant cell lines are generated through random integration of multi-cistronic plasmid vector containing the genes of interest and selection marker gene into the host genome. The recombinant cell lines require several rounds of limiting clonal dilution to isolate stable high expressing clones. Stable high expression of the genes of interest is a rare and desired trait in recombinant clonal cell lines. Despite being clonal, cell lines eventually become heterogeneous and lose productivity. The Mammalian genome resides as packaged chromatin in the nucleus, which is a highly organized structure with specialized spatial and functional compartments. Increasingly, evidence is pointing to the interaction between plasmid and nuclear architecture as a factor that affects expression and stability. This project is based on the hypothesis that certain locations within the three-dimensional structure of the nucleus are more favourable for stable high-level expression of recombinant genes, integration of transgene into these specific location will produce high expressing stable cell linesTo prove the hypothesis a set of far-red reporter gene expressing recombinant clonal cell lines were generated to use as model cell lines. These cell lines were characterized over 80 days of continuous culture to determine their expression and stability. Flow cytometry results showed that all cell lines showed heterogeneity and gradual loss of expression of the far-red gene. Majority of the cell lines loss 80% of their gene copy number by day 25 of continuous culture. The possibility of using telomeric repeat sequences and nuclear bodies as nuclear landmarks was explored in order to develop tools that can be used to study the localization and interactions of the integrated recombinant genes and the CHO genome in the nuclear environment. Telomeric repeat sequences were far too numerous and scattered to use as nuclear landmark. While PML nuclear bodies and Cajal bodies appeared to be randomly positioned. The possibility of cross-species chromosome painting using FACS sorted Chinese hamster chromosome as paints was investigated, results showed that two copies of chromosome 1 and a copy of chromosome 4 along with segments of other chromosomes 7 and X&Y are conserved in the CHO genome. This finding allowed us to further explore the localization of chromosomes in the interphase nuclei. Results showed that the CHO cell equivalent of hamster chromosome 4 does not have a preferred radial localization in the interphase nuclei. FISH data also showed that the site of reporter gene integration is variable and that the integrated plasmid does not have a preferred radial position within the nuclei. These findings indicated that the CHO nuclei in our cell lines do not have a common nuclear organization.

Thief of Truth is a first-person perspective Virtual Reality (VR) comic that explores the relationship between humans and artificial intelligence (AI). The work tells the story of a mind-uploaded human being reborn as a new subject while interacting with an AI that is looking for the meaning of life. In order to experiment with the expandability of VR comics, the work was produced by focusing on three problems. First, the comic is designed using the viewing control effect of VR. Second, through VR controller-based interaction, the player's immersion in the work is increased. Third, a method for increasing accessibility to VR comics was devised. A posthuman turn can be observed in many contemporary discourses. It is characterized by an endeavour to overcome the anthropocentric picture of the world, excluding from it the ‘gap’ between the world and human, a belief in human exclusivity, as well as the practice of organizing dichotomic systems. The article relates the theories developed by Braidotti, Haraway and Ferrando and the notion of posthuman subject to the artistic exploration of the work with nonhuman others, trees, and fungi in particular. By talking on the posthuman subject and its ontological state, but more precisely by following the way we are interacting with nonhumans within the practice of selected artists, Olga Kisseleva and Saša Spačal, what their connections to humans are, the movement towards rethinking the role of humans and acknowledging those by whom we are surrounded can be traced. Thus, artists do not formulate their notion of posthuman subject, but rather they demonstrate another approach and attitude towards nonhumans: to consider the latter, trees or fungi in our case, as partners, not to build hierarchies because the equality of the partners and to acknowledge their ‘knowledge’ we can learn from.

Volume of Voids is a series of art projects that visualize and materialize the voids between different beings under the regulation of social distancing during the Covid-19 pandemic. It consists of two major artworks: Volume of Voids I, which creates data sculptures that visualize and materialize the voids, and Vol II of Voids, which brings an interactive art experience that emphasizes the mobility of the space-between humans. The purpose of this work is to create an artistic and conceptual response to the impact of a historical pandemic on complex social networking systems by rethinking the space-between. This paper introduces the conceptual background, design methodology, and technical implementation of this series of work, including the discussions of speculative design framework on computational art, experimental data visualization, volumetric capturing, and 3d fabrication.

To act, humans first need to make sense of the world. Thereby, sensemaking goes beyond accumulation of pure information of objects or rational knowledge production, but it encompasses additional information such as meaning, mindful engagement, socially embedded knowledge, cultural and work contexts. To navigate in diverse environments, sensemaking becomes central to social settings, also to engage with technologies and understand dynamics in ecological environments. In a complex world where technologies are added components of everyday life and are envisioned as partial means to approach global challenges, social, technological, and ecological environments become intertwined. This meshwork of environments also means to bring together different kinds of knowledge as a base of sensemaking through experience. In the Digital Sensemaking project we specifically look at digitization processes, the interaction with IoT Elements and Digital Twins through the lens of performance art to elaborate on the non- cognitive core constituents of sensemaking processes: embodiment, action-sense nexus, and temporality. We show that aesthetics can be found as an important dimension to bridge the cognitive and non-cognitive process and explore the role of art in this kind of research. It facilitates process and technological development in organizations entangling the social, technological, and ecological.

In the late 1980s, the Canadian Pacific Railway abandoned a rail yard on the outskirts of Montreal’s Mile End district. Within a few years, the return of animal and plant species encouraged the citizen community to reinvest this site known as Le Champ des Possibles. Despite community efforts to rehabilitate this site, hydrocarbon and heavy metal pollution persists in the soils and thus requires rethinking the engagement with the imperceptible mutations of ecosystems. Symphony of the Stones was created in response to this context. This research-creation project consists of several urban art installations that activate residual metals in soils by their magnetic characteristics to make these imperceptible pollutants visible. The following paper unfolds the different processes, methodologies and strategies that led to in site interventions blending art installation, collaboration with different communities and associations and leading to a rethinking of art practices in the urban environment.

SHORT PAPER. The Ecologies of Thought project aimed to reconceptualize the relationships between ecological and technical knowledge, seeking an epistemological understanding that pushed beyond nature vs. culture divides. More than a conceptual and theoretical proposal, which was based on the technodiverse notion of cosmotechnics, the project developed practical and experimental methodologies in collaboration with the Guarani and Kaiowá Indigenous communities of Brazil to further this investigation. With an international and interdisciplinary partnership, we researched relationships between sounds and plants in indigenous cosmology and the ways in which these relationships can help us to more deeply understand a notion of ecology that is based on the poetics of care. With that, we created a series of collaborative virtual reality experiments using generative art processes, which proved to be an interesting methodology of artistic creation as research.

SHORT PAPER. NFTs are often imagined as the initiators of a democratic revolution in the art world, and yet their effects are much more complicated than meets the eye. While the financial independence and the new exposure channels they offer to the artists are undeniable, they also disturb the art world’s current equilibrium, resulting in the emergence of a chaotic art ecosystem that makes the independent artists’ already existing vulnerabilities even more pronounced. This paper defends the position that artists necessitate new systems of collaboration to sidestep these negative effects, overviews some promising examples of such attempts and discusses the potential solutions for the future.

In this paper we present the sound installation Eleven Movements of the Cryoscape which was created for the new Kangiata Illorsua – Ilulissat Icefjord Centre in Greenland. The installation is a near real-time sonification of the movement and melting of the Inland Ice, consisting of an array of eleven speakers, each transmitting from a different location in Greenland. The installation portrays the Inland Ice as a living, breathing, evolving organism in the age of the anthropocene, where humankind has made its mark on the very changes that occur to the natural sounds over time. The installation invites people into an affectively engaging and contemplative relation to our changing ecologies through sonification of data to reflect on our present condition and to potentially imagine and connect to new realities. In this paper, we present the process leading to the creation of the installation and how it adds to existing research into sonification and listening practices in artistic and design research.

The purpose of the study is to find ways to solve the current problem of improving the military education system. The needs in the formation and development of digital competencies of military management officers in different competence areas were studied: information and data literacy, communication and collaboration, digital content creation, safety and problem solving are studied. Possession of a high level of competence in these areas, according to the authors, significantly affects the professional development of officers during their military careers. The attention is focused on the possibility of implementing transdisciplinary integration in the system of advanced training of officers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The subject of the study, among other things, was the formation of readiness to use STEM-technologies in professional activities. The study reviewed modern STEM-approaches in the educational process and analyzed the experience of countries such as the United States, Australia, China, Britain, Israel, Korea, Singapore. The results of the survey among the students of advanced training courses at The National Defence University of Ukraine named after Ivan Cherniakhovskyi are highlighted. In particular, the attitude and needs of military management officers to training and professional development were clarified; identified their educational interests. In particular, the need for effective ownership of tools for planning and organizing project work, analysis and evaluation of achieved results is identified.

In a previous BARD-supported study, three of the investigators of this research were involved in a study on biological control of postharvest diseases of citrus and deciduous fruits. Several naturally occurring, non-antibiotic producing yeast antagonists were identified. Application of some of these antagonists resulted in very high levels of biocontrol under laboratory conditions but lower efficacy in semi-commercial tests. It was felt that the lack of knowledge on the mode of action of the biocontrol agents was limiting their efficient use. The current study was aimed at narrowing this gap in our knowledge. Two specific objectives were outlined: to study the mechanism by which calcium salts enhance biocontrol activity and to determine the role, if any, of the yeast extracellular materials and/or enzymes which degrade fungal cell walls during the interaction between the antagonists, the pathogen and the host. CaCl2 but not MgCl2, inhibited spore germination, and germ-tube elongation of Botrytis cinerea, Penicillium expansum and P. digitatum in culture. It also inhibited the pectinolytic activity of the pathogens. Biocontrol of apple decay by isolate 182 of Candida oleophila, an effective biocontrol agent, was enhanced by the addition of CaCl2 whereas there was no effect on the biocontrol activity of isolate 247 of this yeast. Similarly, CaCl2 enhanced efficacy of the US-7 isolate of Pichia guilliermondii in reducing infection of P. digitatum in citrus fruit. CaCl2 by itself also reduced the infection of peel wounds and stimulated ethylene production by grapefruit peel. This antagonist exhibited a very high ability to maintain cytosolic Ca2+ homeostasis when exposed to high CaCl2 concentrations. It is postulated, therefore, that enhanced biocontrol activity by calcium is the result of direct inhibition of the pathogen by calcium ions on spore germination and metabolism and indirectly due to the ability of the biocontrol agent to maintain normal metabolism in the presence of high levels of calcium. The extracellular materials produced by P. guilliermondii in culture and on the fruit inhibited, at low concentrations, the pathogen in culture and reduced percent infection of the fruit. The direct inhibition of the pathogen by these materials may thus be involved in the mode of action of the antagonist. This study contributed to our knowledge on the action of calcium salts and the yeast antagonist extracellular materials on biocontrol activity and will contribute to a more efficient use of this technology in the control of postharvest diseases of fruits.

One of the main tasks of applied linguistics is the solution of the problem of high-quality automated processing of natural language. The most popular methods for processing natural-language text responses for the purpose of extraction and representation of semantics should be systems that are based on the efficient combination of linguistic analysis technologies and analysis methods. Among the existing methods for analyzing text data, a valid method is used by the method using a vector model. Another effective and relevant means of extracting semantics from the text and its representation is the method of latent semantic analysis (LSA). The LSA method was tested and confirmed its effectiveness in such areas of processing the native language as modeling the conceptual knowledge of the person; information search, the implementation of which LSA shows much better results than conventional vector methods.

The article analyzes transformation of forms of degrees of comparison of adjectives in live television broadcasting. Particular attention is paid to the specific properties of different forms of degrees of comparison of adjectives. To analyze the peculiarities of their use for errors in speech of television journalists, associated with non-compliance with linguistic norms on ways to avoid these errors, to make appropriate recommendations to television journalists. The main method we use is to observe the speech of live TV journalist, we used during the study methods of comparative analysis of comparison of theoretical positions from the work of individual linguists and journalism sat down as well as texts that sounded in the speech of journalists. Our objective is to trace these transformations and develop a certain attitude towards them in our researches of the language of the media and practicing journalists to support positive trends in the development of the broadcasting on TV and give recommendations for overcoming certain negative trends. Improving the live broadcasting of television journalists, in particular the work on deepening the language skills will contribute to the modernization of some trends in the reasonable expediency of the transformation of certain phenomena, modernization of some tendencies concerning the reasonable expedient transformation of separate grammatical phenomena and categories and at braking and in general stopping of processes of transformation of negative unreasonable not expedient. This fully applies primarily to attempts to transform the forms of degrees of comparison of adjectives and this explains importance of the results achieved in these study.
