Abstract Nutrition is recognized as an integral component to achieving optimal athletic performance. Even with the increase in sports nutrition research, athletes continually exhibit a lack of knowledge, which is cause for concern (Jacobson & Aldana, 1992; Jacobson, Sobonya, & Ransone, 2001; Rosenbloom, Jonnalagadda, & Skinner, 2002; Torres-McGehee et al., 2012). Moreover, coaches are a primary source of information to their athletes, but research is limited regarding the adequacy of their nutritional knowledge. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the nutritional knowledge of college coaches using the validated 88 item Sports Nutrition Questionnaire by Caryn Zinn. Twentyone coaches from a Division I National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) institution in the southeastern United States participated. The sample consisted of 16 males and five females. Sports represented were basketball (n=5), cross country and track (n=5), football (n=6), soccer (n=2), softball (n=1), and volleyball (n=2). Results revealed college coaches do not have adequate nutritional knowledge. Only one participant obtained a score about 70% (M=55%). Results indicate coaches may not be an appropriate source of information to their athletes but more research needs to be conducted in the area to further assess collegiate coaches’ nutritional knowledge.

Nutritional care represents any practice provided by a health professional, aimed to improve the patient’s health outcomes by influencing patient’s dietary habits. Clearly, dietitians are the ones supposed to provide top-quality nutrition care, but their services are often inaccessible to many for various reasons. This obliges general practitioners (GPs) in primary health care to provide nutritional counselling to their patients to a certain extent. Preconditions to successful nutritional counselling are GPs with adequate nutritional knowledge, positive attitudes towards nutrition and nutritional care, self-confident and competent in nutritional counselling. Therefore, the aim of this review is to summarise currently available information on nutritional knowledge, confidence and attitudes towards nutritional care and nutrition counselling practice of GPs, as well as barriers towards provision of nutritional counselling. GPs do not consistently obtain satisfying results in nutrition knowledge assessments and their self-confidence in nutrition counselling skills varies. Studies suggest that nutritional counselling practice still has not met its full potential, and GPs frequently report various barriers that impair nutritional counselling practice. Thus, health policies that help overcome barriers and create stimulating environment for GPs to implement nutrition counselling strategies efficiently are the key to improving quality and quantity of nutritional counselling.

AIM: The critical role of nutrition in athletes’ performance is widely accepted, and water polo players are no exception. However, there are no studies about their adequate knowledge of proper nutrition. Thus, the purpose of this study was to assess the nutritional knowledge of water polo players. MATERIAL & METHOD: We examined 30 male and 11 female water polo players of the A1 Greek national league, aged 16-37. Participants answered the “General Nutrition Knowledge Questionnaire” (Kliemann et al., Eur J Clin Nutr 70: 1174–1180, 2016) consisting of 86 questions on general nutrition knowledge. Results were analyzed with descriptive statistics and with the χ2 test to examine gender differences. RESULTS: Participants answered correctly 59% and incorrectly 41% of the questions. The majority of false answers were about the role of fruits and vegetables, body composition, fats, nutritional supplements, salt, the energy content of food, micronutrients, sugar-containing foods, alcohol, the glycemic index, and whole-grain foods. Males performed significantly better in 2 questions compared to females (which combination of vegetables had more vitamins and which of chip choices is lower in fat). CONCLUSIONS: Water polo players had satisfactory knowledge on general nutrition, with males performing slightly better than females. However, they should receive further education on nutrition by experts in order to clarify misconceptions that still exist.

Purpose: This study was conducted on nurses from The Sheba Medical Center. The purpose of the study was to investigate nurses’ evaluation of the importance of a nutrition assessment, (b) nurses’ knowledge of nutrition care and (c) nurses’ evaluation of the quality of nutrition care in their department. Design: The study was a quantitative correlational study performed in a university-affiliated, teaching hospital. Methods: Data were collected via a digital questionnaire through head nurses, from 203 nurses and analyzed by frequencies, means and Pearson correlations, independent t-tests, oneway ANOVA and stepwise such as the ability of patients to feed themselves, chew and swallow, multiple linear regression were performed to determine predictors observing whether a patient finishes a meal and offering assistance of nurses’ responses where needed. Findings: Importance of nutritional assessment is positively and significantly correlated to knowledge of nutritional care and quality of nutritional treatment. Female nurses’ knowledge is significantly higher than male. Senior nurses’ knowledge is higher than less senior nurses. Nurses who participated in emergency care training have a significantly higher level of knowledge than nurses who did not participate in this course. Knowledge of nutritional care is not significantly correlated to quality of nutritional treatment. It is important to introduce the role of nurses regarding nutritional care within their departments to doctors and dietitians, as well as involving them in building the intervention course. Conclusions: These findings highlight the importance of checking the quality of nurses’ educational knowledge and improving it through an intervention with specified training surrounding knowledge regarding nutrition, including learning and training.

Introduction: Nutritional assessment is a prerequisite for nutritional delivery. Patients in intensive care suffer from under-nutrition and nutritional failure due to poor assessment. Nursing ability to early detect nutritional failure is the key for minimizing imparities in practice and attaining nutritional goals. Aim of this article is to examine the ability of Jordanian ICU nurses to assess the nutritional status of critically ill patients, considering biophysical and biochemical measures. Methods: This cross sectional study recruited nurses from different health sectors in Jordan. ICU nurses from the governmental sector (two hospitals) and private sectors (two hospitals) were surveyed using a self-administered questionnaire. Nurses' knowledge and responsibility towards nutritional assessment were examined. Results: A total of 220 nurses from both sectors have completed the questionnaire. Nurses were consistent in regard to knowledge, responsibility, and documentation of nutritional assessment. Nurses in the governmental hospitals inappropriately perceived the application of aspiration reduction measures. However, they scored higher in applying physical examination and anthropometric assessment. Although both nurses claimed higher use of biochemical measurements, biophysical measurements were less frequently used. Older nurses with longer clinical experience exhibited better adherence to biophysical measurement than younger nurses. Conclusion: Nursing nutritional assessment is still suboptimal to attain nutritional goals. Assessment of body weight, history of nutrition intake, severity of illness, and function of gastrointestinal tract should be considered over measuring albumin and pre-albumin levels. A well-defined evidence-based protocol as well as a multidisciplinary nutritional team for nutritional assessment is the best to minimize episodes of under-nutrition.

This study aimed to analyze the nutrition knowledge, nutritional status, body composition, nutrient intake and physical fitness of young gymnasts. The study used a cross-sectional design with 20 subjects comprising rhythmic and artistic gymnasts in Raden Inten, Jakarta. Nutritional status and body composition were measured using anthropometric measurements, macronutrient and micronutrient intakes were measured with 3x24-h food recall, physical fitness was measured using the bleep test (20m shuttle run), and nutrition knowledge was assessed using questionnaires consisting of 30 questions on macronutrients, micronutrients and water. The results indicated that the gymnasts (n=20, 13.7±2.1 y.o, 37.8±8.2 kg and 147.3±10 cm) generally had a fairly good nutrition knowledge score (73.2%); i.e. 10 people in the good nutrition-knowledge group and 10 people in the poor nutrition-knowledge group. The majority of the macronutrient and micronutrient intakes were below the nutritional requirements, in both the good and poor nutrition-knowledge groups. The nutrition knowledge scores were low for hydration-related knowledge (66%), while the scores for macronutrient and micronutrient knowledge were 73.8% and 84.2%, respectively. This study found that nutrition knowledge had a positive correlation with physical fitness (p<0.05). A sports nutrition-related education intervention is needed for those gymnasts that still have poor nutrition knowledge. Sports nutrition knowledge needs to be provided for athletes and coaches so that athletes’ intakes meet their nutritional requirements in order to maximise their performance.

The new era of healthcare emphasizes the integration of nutritional care into healthcare management to improve patient outcomes. Previous studies indicated that nutritional knowledge among physicians is insufficient. Thus far, only a limited number of studies have assessed nutritional knowledge among Saudi physicians, without providing data regarding their views toward practice against malnutrition. Therefore, the aim of the present cross-sectional study was to address this knowledge gap among Saudi physicians in the hospitals of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. A total of 117 physicians were recruited using a questionnaire to collect physician characteristics, nutritional knowledge, and knowledge and practice related to malnutrition. The mean nutritional knowledge scores were low (50%; SD: 24%). Saudi physicians scored high in questions related to the medical field; however, their knowledge related to nutrition topics was poor. The majority of Saudi physicians agreed that the nutritional management of malnourished patients was difficult at screening (79%), assessment (78%), and treatment (78%) stages. The self-assessed knowledge and interest of physicians toward malnutrition was modest, and they found the malnutrition management to be only moderately relevant to their work. Nutritional knowledge and practice against malnutrition among Saudi physicians is insufficient. Saudi physicians require proper education and training in nutrition.

Purpose. The prevalence of obesity and the number of bariatric surgeries are increasing in Saudi Arabia. Studies evaluating nutritional knowledge, especially in Middle Eastern countries, are limited. Therefore, this study was conducted to examine the general and postbariatric nutritional knowledge related to dietary recommendations among patients undergoing bariatric surgery. Patients and Methods. In a cross-sectional study, 112 patients aged 18–65 years, of both genders, were recruited from the Surgical Clinics at King Abdul-Aziz University Hospital in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Patients’ knowledge pertaining to general nutrition and consumption after bariatric surgery was assessed in relation to dietary recommendations, using a preoperative questionnaire. Results. The mean general nutrition knowledge score was 42 of a maximum of 85 points (50%). Approximately 40% and 60% of patients were classified with a low and medium level of nutritional knowledge, respectively. Postbariatric nutritional knowledge among patients was very low (mean: 16/81 points). The level of education was correlated with patients’ body mass index (p=0.045) and the general nutritional knowledge total score (p=0.05). Conclusion. General and postbariatric nutritional knowledge among Saudi bariatric patients is currently insufficient. A multicenter study involving a larger sample size with different sociodemographic characteristics is warranted to confirm these findings. The purpose of such a study would be to determine the nutritional knowledge of patients undergoing bariatric surgery and inform the implementation of educational strategies.

However, Riskesdas 2018 shows an increase in the prevalence of obesity in adults by 21.8%. This high prevalence is said to be an indicator of low knowledge about balanced nutrition even though the two generations live in an era of abundant information. Objectives: Analyzing differences in nutritional knowledge, attitudes and behavior regarding visual balanced nutrition between generation Y and generation Z.Methods: This research is an observational analytic study with cross sectional design. Selection of research subjects with total sampling. A sample of 40 respondents was obtained from generation Y and 40 respondents from generation Z. Using the independent t-test statistical test to determine differences in nutritional knowledge, attitudes and behaviors regarding balanced nutrition visuals (balanced nutrition cone and my plate) in generation Y and generation Z.Results: There are differences in nutritional knowledge in generation Y and generation Z (p = 0.0001), there are differences in attitudes about visual balanced nutrition in generation and generation Z (p = 0.0001), and there are differences in nutritional behavior towards visual balanced nutrition of generation Y and generation Z (p = 0.029). From the above values, it can be said that the value of sampling bias on nutritional knowledge and attitudes is smaller than behavior. Conclusion: The three results show that there are differences in nutritional knowledge, attitudes and behavior between these two generations.

Malnutrition problem (under and over nutrition), known as the double burden of malnutrition, was a growing concern in developing countries, including Indonesia. The 2018 Indonesia Basic Health Survey noted a substantial increase in the proportion of these nutritional impairments. As a fundamental factor of malnutrition, nutritional knowledge was expected to be occupied not only by vulnerable groups. A transitional age group like youth, in this case undergraduate students, should also be on the radar since they carried a risk of malnutrition from adolescence into adulthood. This study aimed to assess the nutritional knowledge determinants among undergraduate students in Jakarta. This cross-sectional study was conducted among undergraduate students in Universitas Pembangunan Nasional Veteran Jakarta. The nutritional knowledge regarding the Indonesian Guideline for Balance Diet, as well as participants’ characteristics questionnaire, was self-administered online by 235 participants using Google Form. Chi-Square, Spearman’s rho, and logistics regression tests were used to analyze the data using statistical software. Students who participated in this study were primarily female, aged under 20 years, achieve a GPA above 3.50, and had normal BMI. The bivariate analysis reported a significant association between sex, study field, and parent’s income with nutrition knowledge level. Based on logistic regression, the odds of having an adequate nutrition knowledge level is about 2.76 times higher among students whose parents earned 3-5 million IDR per month than students whose parents earned less than 3 million or more than 5 million IDR. Undergraduate students were also a prominent target group to ensure nutritional knowledge occupancy since they may face adolescent nutritional problems and future risk of adult nutritional problems. This article analyses the effects on children's nutritional status of their mothers’ knowledge of nutrition while controlling for the effects of the socio-economic characteristics of the family. In almost every test of the effects of various aspects of nutritional knowledge on weight for age and height for age, per capita monthly income was a significant intervening factor; the exception was the knowledge of ORS preparation. In the case of weight for height, house construction type was a significant intervening factor. The authors conclude that, unless mothers’ economic status improves simultaneously with nutrition knowledge, they may not be able to practice what they know, but that it is nevertheless essential to increase their nutrition knowledge.

AimThis study aims to assess the knowledge, attitude and practice of primary care physicians (PCPs) in Lebanon regarding nutrition counseling and to investigate possible related barriers.BackgroundNutrition counseling is an important aspect of patient care, especially with the increase in nutrition-related disorders.MethodsThis is a descriptive study among a convenience sample of PCPs in Lebanon at two annual conferences in 2014 using an anonymous questionnaire.FindingsResponse rate was 54.6%. Overall, physicians considered that they have good to very good nutritional knowledge. Although they rated their formal nutritional education poorly, they had a positive attitude towards nutritional counseling and reported practicing general nutritional counseling with their patients. Barriers to nutritional counseling were: time, perceived poor patient adherence to diet, gap in physician’s nutritional knowledge and lack of insurance coverage for dietitian fees. Changes should be made to medical education curricula to include nutrition courses related to prevalent health problems.

Children in urban area tend to abandon healthy diet, since there are a lot of fast food options available around. In general, children valued the importance of nutrition, but they did not concern the health benefit of foods in food selections. Their dietary quality was not satisfactory, and the diet of most children did not meet the recommended serving requirements for vegetable, fruit, cereal and milk. The purpose of this study was to understand the relationship among Nutrition knowledge, vegetables diet and Nutritional Status of Elementary Students at Don Bosco Catholic School Manado. This is a cross sectional study in which we explored the nutritional status of Don Bosco Elementary Students based on nutrition knowledge, vegetable diet and Body Mass Index with questionnaire instrument, anthropometric measurements from June to August 2019. The nutritional status of Don Bosco Elementary School students based on body mass index (BMI) shows that students with normal and overweight nutritional status share an equal comparison that is 1:1 (50%), while the level of student knowledge about nutrition was dominated by students with poor knowledge that is 67.7%. This is also in line with the pattern of vegetables consuming which is also poor at 56.3%. Based on the results of Chi-Square analysis there is no significant relationship between the levels of nutritional knowledge of students with vegetable consumption patterns. Conversely, there is no relationship between the levels of nutritional knowledge of students with nutritional status based on Body Mass Index (BMI).

This conversation is part of a special issue on “Critical Nutrition” in which multiple authors weigh in on various themes related to the origins, character, and consequences of contemporary American nutrition discourses and practices, as well as how nutrition might be known and done differently. In this section authors focus on the hegemony of reductionism and quantification in modern-day nutritional knowledge by discussing the historical foundations and ethical dimensions, as well as the scientific absences, in this knowledge. Reviewing various challenges to the energy balance model, they all suggest that the promotion of good nutrition is far from simple. Some authors also discuss why various “invisible” nutrients and measures of good nutrition continue to hold so much sway in nutrition discourse.

Objective: Nutrition is one of the substantial modifiable risk factors in the prevention and control of many diseases such as chronic kidney diseases. Nutrition knowledge can thus help in prevention. The objective of this study is to assess nutritional knowledge of patients on hemodialysis and determine if this differs and was linked to duration of the therapy in Finland and Turkey. Methods: The study was conducted in one university hospital dialysis center each in Finland and Turkey with hemodialysis patients with an age of ≥18 years. A questionnaire about demographic and disease characteristics and nutritional knowledge was administered face-to-face. Anthropometric measurements (body weight, edema-free dry weight, height, body mass index) were evaluated. Results: The study group consisted of 120 adults, 50 patients (14 female, 36 male) from Finland and 70 patients (21 women, 49 men) from Turkey. The mean nutritional knowledge score was 10.1 ± 3.11 for the Finnish patients and 9.2 ± 3.32 for the Turkish patients (p>0.05). There was a positive correlation between the nutritional knowledge score and body weight in Turkey and between the nutritional knowledge score and duration of dialysis in Finland (p<0.05). Conclusions: In both countries, the majority of patients with high nutritional knowledge scores (11-15 points) stated that they had received nutritional training from a dietician (in Finland: 58.3%, in Turkey: 66.7%). Thus training and mobilization of dietitians should be the main approach used to increase nutritional knowledge of dialysis patients.
