The study describes the founding and growth of professional nursing at Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion, Indiana, from the program's initial planning in 1972 to 1992. The review of literature traces the historical development of professional nursing education schools in the United States from early 1800 training schools to teaching advanced nursing technology in 1992. A chronological approach involving both primary and secondary sources will be used to identify educational and developmental changes in administration, facilities, faculty positions and qualifications, curriculum, policies related to students and graduates, accreditation by the state of Indiana and the National League for Nursing, and the impact of religious-based program on student graduates.The historical research study will show the development of professional nursing education at Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion, Indiana. The development of the baccalaureate degree curriculum was facilitated by its founders with a goal to enable the school to meet accreditation requirements.The findings indicated that professional nursing education at Marion College/Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion, Indiana, followed the average trend in the development of a baccalaureate of science degree in nursing in the United States. A strength was Marion College/Indiana Wesleyan University developed a nursing program that had a strong Christian, multicultural foundation. This theme was interwoven throughout the curriculum, the uniqueness of the program lay in its development when compared to other nursing programs in Indiana and across the nation.The nursing directors and faculty members contributed to the quality of the education that was offered to nursing students. The nursing program expanded in 1981, and a graduate program in community health nursing was offered.

This is a study concerning the social history of paediatric nursing between 1920 and 1970. Oral history data was collected from past nurses of children and from people who had been in hospital as children within the period in question. The study explores the professional orientation of nurses and their role within the micro-culture of the acute hospital, their relationship with doctors on the one hand and with the child and family on the other. It is found that until the later years of the period 1920-1970, paediatric nursing was a regimented discipline, whose professional identity was intimately associated with that of medicine and with notions of 'science' and 'professionalism'. In practice, 'science' meant practicing the 'known way' as described in the literature of the time and which had been passed down by word of mouth and which could not be exposed to critique or review. 'Professionalism' meant being respectful and obedient to senior nurses and to doctors. This created a situation where nursing could not initiate change and as a result, failed to provide social and psychological care appropriate to the child and family. Nursing failed to question and develop its own practice and what changes did take place were the result of other agencies' manipulation of nursing for their own ends. The nurse participants express a strong sense of value for their work history and are proud of what they achieved. Nursing is seen as a demanding and challenging occupation, to which the system of discipline and hierarchy presented most of the challenges. Nursing was an emotionally rewarding area of work, the nurse participants obtaining most satisfaction from being able to 'nurse the child better'. Nurses cared about the children but failed to realise that the emotional neutrality associated with their professionalism was interpreted by the children as a lack of affection. It is found that the child participants tended to be traumatised by their hospital experiences. The cause of this trauma is found to be the way in which nurses practiced according to a scientific and professional paradigm. Unwittingly, this last resulted in the nurses being perceived by the child participants as lacking in affection or emotional 'care' for them as children. Many of the participants remain confused and troubled by this aspect of their experience. By the end of the period 1920-1970 the system of discipline and hierarchy was being disassembled and nursing began to evaluate itself and subject itself to scientific scrutiny. At the same time, paediatric nursing did change to become more child and family orientated and it began to present a more 'human' face to the child patients and their families. These changes are identified with broader changes in society to which paediatric nursing did eventually become aligned.

The purpose of this dissertation is to research aspects of the historical development of Nursing Education and Nursing Management at the Carinus Nursing College from 1949 to 1987; to determine and explain how the College has adapted and coped with historical change and to determine whether proposals for the future can be made. Research has been done by applying the general systems theory and by using the standard methods of historical analysis. Data has been collected by means of oral history, literature search and documentation. The variables isolated are the College as a system; the government or influential super systems; resources such as financial, personnel and students and material inputs; and throughput or processing the work in the output, which leads to the professional nurse. The models used are Bucheles' organizational system, Sharma's flow chart pattern, Mintzberg's parts of organizational systems, and power flows and as shown in Emery, Feibleman and Friends relations and rules of interaction in systems thinking. Parsons' "imperatives of maintenance of a system" as well as Alvin Toffler's "second and third wave phenomena as responses to change" were two further models that were used. By using Robert Buchele's model, the work is divided into four parts: - i) the College as a system ii) the super systems iii) the resources iv) the throughput or processing. A further design that emerged was that two eras could be distinguished, within which three historical phases: - Early, Middle and Late are developed.

Little has been written about nursing in the period 1870-1960 within the geographical boundaries and surrounding areas of Halifax and Huddersfield. This thesis aims to explore the development of nursing within these towns. The focus is on general nurses in hospital and community roles. Rosenberg’s eight areas of importance were used allowing the construction of an historical analysis of both nursing and nurses locally. Archival sources were found in twenty-five main archives and twelve of these were investigated further. Primary documents belonging to local retired nurses such as personal documents, photographs and memorabilia were included. In total 1493 individual items were subjected to documentary analysis. The second stage of data collection involved conducting oral history interviews to capture memories and experiences of local retired nurses. A total of 373 named nurses were identified, sixty-eight contacted, forty-four agreed to participate and twenty-one were interviewed. A life story approach recorded their personal lives and nursing careers. This approach required the ethical issues of biographical research methods and interviewing to be addressed. Interviews were recorded on audio tape and transcribed ready to be deposited in the University of Huddersfield archives. Data was subjected to analysis using NVivo computer software and Rosenberg’s eight areas of importance used as a priori themes. Nursing in these two provincial towns changed during the ninety years under study often in response to local or national issues such as professional registration. Nurse education occurred in all but the early years and developed alongside the increasing specialization of nurses and as each nursing branch emerged. Nurses in West Yorkshire were subject to particular local issues such as its geography, environment and industrial heritage. The merits of this research are it provides a unique account of the local development of nursing adding to the professions history and presenting implications for present day practice.

The population of older adults has grown rapidly in recent years and is expected to continue to grow into the middle of this century. The aging of the population means that nurses need to have specialized gerontological knowledge in order to properly care for older adults. In spite of the current need for specialists in this field, gerontological nursing is not a popular choice and nurses often lack adequate preparation to care for older adults. The complex reasons behind these issues are rooted in the history of the development of this specialty. This study takes a historical look at the development of gerontological nursing in British Columbia through the stories of seven nurse educators who were leaders and innovators in their field. The findings of the study tell a story of the nurses’ work to change unacceptable nursing practice, improve standards of care and professional status of gerontological nursing and advocate for older adults. In doing so, these nurses challenged cultural values about aging and care of older adults and worked toward giving gerontological nurses a voice in policy and decision-making. The findings from this study can be used to guide today’s gerontological nurses as they continue to develop this specialized field of nursing knowledge.

This study traces the development of the Baylor University School of Nursing from its beginning in 1909 through the establishment of the baccalaureate nursing program in 1950. Primary data including official records of the School of Nursing, minutes of the Baylor University Board of Trustees, reports of the School of Nursing to accrediting agencies, and interviews of former students and deans were examined using the historical research techniques of external and internal criticism. A review of the literature that is relevant to the development of nursing education is presented in Chapter II. Chapter III presents the events in the development of the Baylor University School of Nursing. Chapter IV discusses the accreditation criteria which influenced the development of the School of Nursing. Chapter V discusses the curriculum, teaching methods, and faculty qualifications. Chapter VI discusses the people who were the most influential in the development of the School of Nursing. Implications of the study include the recognition that nursing education and nursing service have differing priorities. Conflicts between the needs of patients for care and the needs of students for education arose when the Superintendent of Nurses was responsible for both areas. Usually the needs of patients for care took priority over the needs of students resulting in long hours and less than optimum learning conditions for students. External factors played a major role in the development of nursing education by determining the needs of society for nurses and thus for nursing education. Accreditation criteria established by state and national agencies determined the standards by which the School of Nursing was judged. National accreditation had more impact on the School since higher standards were required. The leadership of the School played a significant role in the development of the professional nursing program. Leaders who had educational preparation and vision for the future of nursing education with an educational institution rather than a service institution worked to establish an improved educational system in nursing.

This thesis takes the form of an investigation into the lack of progress towards the professionalisation of mental nurses during the period 1850 to 1950 and concentrates on their failure to become a professional sub-group within nursing. The proposal is put forward that their relative failure to advance was due to the fact that mental nurses were controlled and dominated by other more powerful health care groups with their own agendas. These were the asylum doctors in the (Royal) Medico-Psychological Association ((R)MPA), and the doctors and general trained nurses in the General Nursing Council (GNC). During the 1850s the (R)MPA's main concern was to raise the status of asylum doctors. The association aimed to achieve this by developing the care and treatment of the insane into another recognised speciality of medicine. To do this they needed to hospitalise the asylums, a process which would include transforming asylum attendants into qualified mental nurses. To this end a mental nursing textbook was published by the (R)MPA in 1885. This was followed by the inauguration of a national training scheme with certification for successful candidates. In order to advance the goal of hospitalisation, female nurses were introduced into male wards in many asylums. It was also asserted that the care of insane male patients was improved, a claim which led to conflicts with the trade unions, which were totally opposed to female nurses on male wards. The impact of unionisation of mental nurses will also be discussed in relationship to the struggle for professionalisation. Even when the Nurses' Registration Act 1919 was passed, mental nurses were caught in the middle of an internecine conflict over who controlled them: on one side was the GNC with its new supplementary register for mental nurses; on the other stood the (R)MPA, reluctant to give up their training and examination scheme under the conditions offered by the GNC. So a dual system of registration continued to exist until the introduction of the National Health Service in 1948. Even then mental nursing was still controlled by the general trained dominated GNC.

This thesis examines the impact of military influence on civilian nursing development from the outbreak of war in 1939 until the restructuring of nurse administration in 1969. It will be argued that a military imposition on civilian nursing was responsible for hindering professional progress and preventing reform. This argument challenges the orthodox view of nursing history which maintains that nurses adopted a variety of professionalization strategies in order to gain credibility and state recognition. This recognition was only achieved as a result of a thirty year battle, during which status became an over-riding concern. This thesis argues that the medical demands of the Second World War threatened the professional foundations of nursing organization, and nurses responded by adopting militarization strategies in an effort to raise and protect their status. These militarization strategies affected all aspects of nursing practice and organizational development, and held significant implications for the post-war reconstruction of health -care delivery. Traditional studies of nursing history in this period have concentrated on the civilian nursing records alone, and have therefore overlooked the military dimension of nursing development. This study uses civilian nursing records, including those of the General Nursing Council and the Royal College of Nursing, in conjunction with military nursing records, including those of the War Office, and the correspondence and diaries of military A comparative analysis of these records proves that the militarization of nursing was an important issue. The analysis explores the interchange of military and civilian nursing personnel during the Second World War, and examines four key relationships in the post-war era: betweengovernment and nursing policy, between nurse leadership and nursing practice, between nurses and other occupational groups, and between various nursing grades at ward level. This analysis exposes the various ways in which militarism has infiltrated these relationships, and has been allowed to dictate the direction and scope of nursing development

This study examines the development of nursing as a vocation, in the early twentieth century, within the context of a growing southern city and an evolving health care system. Nursing advanced from a domestic service to a recognized vocation during this era. An extensive survey of historical and nursing literature revealed few studies which focus on nursing and health care in an urban context. Those studies identified gave only brief glimpses of nurses and focus on northern cities. This investigation aims to add a southern chapter to the history of nursing and health care in urban settings. A community systems approach to analyzing changes in the city provides the context for evaluating nursing development, while health care became more accessible and professional. Historical approaches used to support the thesis include analysis of social history, public health, morbidity and mortality statistics, and quantitative collective biography. These methods yield data which depict what it meant to practice nursing during the study period. Much of the actual information about the nurses and their practice had to come from indirect sources in order to draw conclusions from the research. Primary sources used in this research include newspapers, city directories, census reports, probate records, city health reports, student nurse and hospital records, oral histories and medical records. Secondary sources include southern, women's, urban, city, institutional, medical and public health histories. In addition, nationally oriented nursing histories and theses proved useful in the analysis of primary data. The findings of the study demonstrate marked transitions in the maturation of nursing and health care in the city. These changes happened at a different pace when compared to similar events in northern urban areas. Many variables contributed to the differences noted, including the cultural expectations of women and race relations in community life. Nurses functioned in the beginning of the study as occasional domestic servants who were primarily black women. They practiced in a city with limited public health services, one hospital for whites and a pest house for blacks. By 1930, nurses practiced in a city with improved public health services, four hospitals with nurses' training schools, including one for blacks. Nurses enjoyed a professional association and the protection of a state practice act. These women progressed from shadowy figures seldom seen in public, to a group of workers recognized as an asset to the health of the community. PALMM

Intensive care units (ICUs) emerged across Canada during the early 1960s, significantly contributing to the image of Western hospitals as places of scientific advancement that predominated over much of the twentieth century. ICUs rapidly became both a resource intensive and expensive type of care as the number and size of units increased to accommodate diverse patient populations and treatment options. Nurses enabled the formation and growth of ICUs through their constant presence and skilled care. There has been limited research, however, regarding the historical development of Canadian ICUs, the relationships between nurses and other personnel in such units, how they developed an identity as ICU nurses, or how ICU nursing became a specialty practice. Situated within the broader histories of hospitals, healthcare, and nursing, this study uses a social history approach to examine nurses’ experiences within Canadian ICUs between 1960 and 2002. Berger and Luckmann’s Social Construction of Reality provided a lens for analysis and interpretation of oral histories, photographs, professional literature of the time period under study, and both archival and organizational records. This thesis argues that ICU nurses’ relationships with one another, in the context of a technologically complex environment, socially constructed their knowledge and skill acquisition, their socialization as ICU nurses, and the development of a specialized body of knowledge that ultimately led to formal recognition of ICU nursing as a specialty in Canada.

This study examines Canadian military nursing from the onset of the 1914 Great War to the end of the first post-War decade in 1929. Its purpose is to focus on the experience of military nursing in an attempt to discover the specifics of the profession, particularly during the interwar years, and to analyse the factors that affected military nursing during that era. The analysis of military nursing in context with the era revealed three main conclusions. First, unlike the peacetime experience, military nursing during the Great War was a professionally and culturally liberating experience that set Military Nurses apart form their civil peers. Unfortunately, during the interwar years, the re-instatement of Nursing Sisters to pre-War military positions of administration, removed them from the clinical setting, was deleterious to the profession, and did not accord them the opportunity to apply the practice element of their profession. Second, the introduction of non-commissioned men as hospital orderlies provided the major hospital military workforce that maintained the Nursing Sister's distance from the bedside and usurped them of their clinical focus and the opportunity to provide patient care. As an unfavourable offshoot to this, Military Nurses were restricted to administration. Without a practice component to their profession, Military Nurses had little in common with their civil peers who were actively engaged in practice and in activities to advance the profession. Last, the limitation imposed upon Nursing Sisters' by their appointment of relative rank precluded them from advancing within the military organization, from participating in the re-structuring of the CAMC and from influencing any policy that affected patient services or the Nursing profession. The Industrial Revolution created sweeping cultural and technological changes in 19th century American society. During this era, nursing evolved from an unskilled to a skilled form of work. Changes in manufacturing, communication, and transportation occurred differentially in America, which favored the growth of different regional economies. Sectionalism erupted into the first modern war in American history. The Civil War created the conditions in which nursing, medicine, and the hospital formed organizational structures, roles, and boundaries that would later form the template for the modern healthcare system. The purpose of this research was to study how the context and culture of mid-nineteenth century American life affected the evolution of nursing during the Civil War, and the later affect it would have on skilled nursing knowledge, roles, education, and practice. The overall goal of the work is to contribute to the body of research on parallel historic processes that had an influence over the formation of early skilled nursing practice and the evolution of the nursing role. The effect of parallel processes associated with the Industrial Revolution and the advent of modern warfare on the development of skilled nursing were the particular focus of this research. A social history methodology was utilized to examine texts and discourse from the Civil War period. It was found that advances in transportation, communication, and manufacturing were both integral to the advent of modern war and modern nursing, and that the advent of these was highly integrated. It was also found that the industrialization of the hospital in response to wartime was highly influential on the development of skilled nursing programs later in the century. The role that nurses would take in the postbellum hospital, however, reflected the mass media image of nursing generated during the war rather than actual wartime practice.

Throughout the twentieth century, nursing services gradually moved from being located within the community to being concentrated in institutions, such as hospitals. The aim of this thesis is to identify those nursing services that existed within the Rockhampton region from 1911 to 1957; to document the evolution of the services; and to explore those factors that influenced this evolution. In particular, an emphasis is placed on social and political factors. The nursing services explored in this thesis include private duty nursing, private hospitals, church and charity facilities, public hospitals and public community services. These services represent most nursing opportunities during the first half of the twentieth century. However, this thesis takes a unique position by exploring all services in detail within a limited location. In order to accomplish this, an empirical historical method is utilised, based on a wide range of documentary primary sources drawn from archival collections relating to Rockhampton and the nursing profession. By examining a limited geographical area, this thesis highlights the complexity of nursing in regards to who nursed, how nursing was practiced and what factors influenced nursing. A particular feature that emerges within this thesis is the important role untrained nurses played within nursing services throughout the period under review. This group dominated private duty nursing and lying-hospitals in the Rockhampton region, although were gradually restricted to facilities for the aged and chronically ill. Trained nurses also became more institutionalised throughout the period, gradually losing former levels of autonomy as they gained more controlled working conditions, wages and career structures. Finally, this thesis highlights variations in nursing services between metropolitan and regional areas of Queensland.

This study was designed to examine the status of public health nursing in British Columbia's Provincial Health Service during the period from 1939 to 1959. Based on the social history approach, the focus of the study was public health nursing and influences on its evolution during the selected period. The historical method was used to collect and analyze data from various primary and secondary sources; these included annual reports of provincial health units, annual reports of the Division of Public Health Nursing, journal articles, and oral histories. Data were subjected to content analysis to reveal themes relevant to the topic. Several important factors were identified that had affected the development of public health nursing during the selected period. Data were categorized according to the various influences and research notes were written as a basis for the historical account. The presentation of findings included descriptions of the organization of public health services in the province and the role of the public health nurse. This was followed by a discussion of the forces and their impact on public health nursing. The study's conclusions were drawn from the analysis of the historical data within the social context of the time. During the 1939 to 1959 period, some of the major influences on provincial public health nursing were basic education for public health nurses, staff development on the job, the demand for services, and the supply of qualified personnel. Other factors were the social and political forces of the time, the health care system, and the role of voluntary agencies in public health care. Although public health nursing faced a number of problems, these were overcome to a large extent through creative strategies that promoted collegiality among staff and enhanced job satisfaction. Public health nurses had a strong sense of identity and were respected because their work contributed to improving the health of the communities they served.

This thesis examines the establishment and work of local nursing associations in provincial England between 1860 and 1900. It challenges the conventional idea that nursing reform was a hospital based phenomenon. Reform was supported by urban elites, people with strong religious convictions and medical practitioners. In addition, associations helped to facilitate the entry of women into management in both voluntary and paid positions. This research indicates that nursing reform took place alongside other initiatives that aimed to train working-class women to be useful and obedient servants in private homes. Associations aimed, in part, to reform the lives of the working classes through the training of district nurses who were expected to give instruction regarding health, as well as caring for the sick. The establishment and subsequent form of associations was dependent upon local conditions and circumstances. An analysis of the success and failure of local associations in reforming hospital nursing, caring for the sick poor and competing in the medical market for private patients is undertaken. The influence of class relations, religion, gender, place and individual agency in the formation of associations, the employment of nurses and the practice of nursing are discussed.

This thesis examines the government's tripartite approach to workforce policy and planning in British nursing from 1939 until 1960. Emerging histories have placed emphasis on the ministries and their effect upon the development of nursing. However, there remains no examination of their distinctive and interrelated roles in managing nursing workforce policy and planning, This thesis examines the contribution of three of these ministries from initial workforce involvement in the early 1940s, through to the 1950s and the advent of the Committee on Senior Nursing Staff Structure (the Salmon Report). It concludes that three distinct roles emerged from each of the ministries. The Ministry of Labour and National Service (MLNS) dealt with nurse recruitment, the Ministry of Health addressed retention through conditions of service, while the Colonial Office represented replenishment. Such division of ministerial roles and any limited collaboration, however, did not appear to be a part of any conscious workforce policy. The thesis argues that although the Ministry of Health and the MLNS viewed nursing as less prestigious than a traditional profession, strategies appealing to nurses' aspirations were used to promote a sense of professional value in an occupation of many countervailing tensions. Nursing appeared to occupy its own unique space between professions and industrial labour. i The post-war management of the nursing workforce emerges as a highly reactive policy, focusing upon diverse groups for recruitment. It covered the use of part-time nurses to fit into the social expectations of post-war women, the recruitment of male nurses and a manipulation of colonial legislation to the clear benefit of British nursing. Nurse shortages are explored against government unease in the immediate post-war period with the effects of increasing colonial immigration of black workers, which was uncontrolled due to their status as British subjects. The ultimate inadequacy of workforce policies in nursing to deal with the recruitment of black nurses remains a current and controversial workforce issue.

This dissertation argues that the experiences of a highly specific group of female medical personnel and the representations of their experiences, both during World War II and in the immediate postwar era, provide a unique opportunity for investigating the role of Australian women in the Pacific War, as well as the processes through which personal testimonies are produced in relation to collective memory, state-sponsored rituals of commemoration, and history. Victims of one of the most infamous war crimes of World War II, the Australian Army Nursing Service (AANS) Sisters and their wartime experiences at the hands of the Japanese Imperial Army (JIA) on Sumatra have been accorded considerable prominence in Australian narratives of the Pacific conflict. Yet notwithstanding this attention, there has been surprisingly little focus on the nurses’ own accounts of the episode. This dissertation is the first attempt to redress the balance by offering a critical reassessment of the original source material, while exploring the broader discursive contexts within which such accounts were produced. The dissertation considers first-hand accounts of the “Bangka Island Massacre” and the AANS Sisters’ subsequent internment by the Japanese between February 1942 and September 1945. The chapters that follow explore the role of the nurses’ ordeal on Sumatra in the development of a professional Australian nursing self-identity, the episode’s incorporation in the national rituals of commemoration surrounding the remembrance of the Pacific conflict, and ultimately, the extent to which the nurses’ narratives have fed into – and helped to shape – a distinctive postwar Australian nationalism. Even before their release from captivity, the AANS Sisters had acquired iconic status in Australia, as embodiments of heroic resistance, altruistic sacrifice and bravery. The dissertation is arranged in four thematic chapters, which consider four distinct areas of the nurses’ experiences – the “Bangka Island Massacre”, internment, press representation and remembrance. Chapter 2 reassesses documentary material collected for the International Military Tribunal for the Far East (IMTFE) in 1946 in order to examine the murders on Bangka Island and the alleged sexual violence associated with the crime. Chapter 3 draws on the published and unpublished camp memoirs of several of the nurses to explore the ways in which the nurses characterized their internment experiences, and the possible factors influencing the construction of those narratives. Chapter 4 makes use of Australian print and broadcast media archives to investigate how the imprisoned Sisters, and civilian and military nurses more generally, were portrayed by the press, and the possible effect this may have had on postwar nation-building, nationalism and remembrance in Australia. Finally, Chapter 5 examines the inclusion of the AANS Sisters in postwar commemorative endeavours and rituals of remembrance – including monuments, shrines, museum displays, temporary exhibitions and the celebration of Anzac Day – investigating the extent to which the nurses have been incorporated into the “Anzac legend”, Australia’s militaristic interpretation of the national character.

This study aimed at describing how the nursing profession in Malta changed between 1964 and 1996 emerging as a profession a result of circumstances and changes within and without. Change appears to have been imposed from outside the profession but Maltese nurses did not react to changes whether it was to their benefit or not. Meanwhile, the cumulative effect of various factors such as demographical changes, educational status and political decisions initiated the process of professionalisation of nursing in Malta. Source materials included archival sources and oral history interviews with twenty four interviewees consisting of nurses and other persons who were influential during the time, including politicians. These were analysed in order to produce a narrative of professionalisation of nursing in Malta. This is the first indepth study on the subject. The chosen period under study begins in 1964, the year Malta gained independence and ends in 1996, the year when the post of Nursing Director was established, thus allowing nurses a relative autonomy. Nurses were initially led by the Sisters of Charity who supervised them. Changes in the demographics of nursing, the type of preparation needed for it and the management system together with political decisions that often followed similar ones taken abroad, affected Maltese nurses. The official opening of the St Luke's School for Nurses and the introduction of nurse education at tertiary level were significant markers in the process of professionalisation. The thesis presents an insight into how Maltese nurses did not show much eagerness to reach professionalisation but were still propelled towards it by changes occurring extrinsically and then intrinsically. This is perhaps unique since nurses in other countries had nurse leaders who actively worked to reach professionalisation.

This thesis examines the role and influence of the administrative Civil Service on the development of policies on nursing and the role played by the nurses employed on the staff of the Ministry of Health. The period studied is the life time of the Ministry of Health, 1919- 1968. Throughout this period nurses were employed within the Ministry in various types of advisory roles. It was also a period when Ministers of Health, and consequently their Civil Servants, had legislative responsibilities and policy interests in the adequate provision of nursing services in hospital and public health services. - The main hypothesis addressed here is that throughout this period, the administrative Civil Service demonstrated a more constructive and realistic view of nursing and of the conthbution made by nurses to the delivery of health care services than the profession's own representatives and leaders. During this period there were five nursing issues which appeared as matters of concern to the Ministry, and while these issues were of concern to central government they could also have been expected to be of central importance to the nursing profession. These issues were nurse registration, recruitment, remuneration, education and training and management and they provide common themes running through this thesis. The study is presented in chronological order and these issues provide the subject context and illustrations of how decisions, on nursing issues, were taken in the Ministry of Health. Some historians and commentators have suggested that the nursing profession was curtailed in what it wanted to achieve for their profession by the Civil Service and the medical profession. In this thesis a contrary conclusion is drawn. Nursing appears as a leaderless profession, lacking any sense of cohesiveness, political awareness or assertiveness and consequently unable to exploit the available opportunities and political support to establish a voice for nursing in the formulation of health policies or in the distribution of resources. While the representatives and leaders of nursing were protecting professional boundaries it was the administrative civil servants who became involved in forward looking debates on the delivery of services and standard of nursing care.

A considerable number of students undertaking pre-registration nurse education in the UK are international students from Zimbabwe. The aim of this study is to listen to their narratives in order both to understand their experiences and to make suggestions for improving their educational management. The context from which the Zimbabwean students have migrated is discussed, outlining the current Zimbabwean educational and health care systems; prevailing social mores, religion and kinship ties; and the more recent sharp economic downturn in the Zimbabwean economy and the effects of the prevalence of HI VIA IDS in Southern Africa. Nine pre-registration nursing students from Zimbabwe attending one UK university, and one further respondent who had qualified as a nurse and was practising in the same locality were recruited to take part in life-history interviews. The interviews covered experiences in Zimbabwe leading to migration to the UK; accounts of arriving in the UK and challenges experienced in starting the course, working in health care settings as placements, and becoming reconciled to life in the UK. Factors prompting migration to the UK are reported to include the emphasis on education as a means of social mobility; the economic crisis, and the disruption of family ties by the HIV epidemic. Educational courses for nursing are the means to prevent their aspirations for professional occupation floundering on current economic and political instability in Zimbabwe, rather than a positive career choice. The reliance of the NHS on internationally-recruited students to cover shortfalls in labour in the UK contributes to this process. Experiences upon arrival in the UK include problems with visas, immigration officials and banking facilities. Zimbabwean students find it challenging to adapt to self-directed learning styles, to combine studying in a context without their familiar domestic help, and under financial pressure to remit monies home. They also report experiences of racism both in the college and in placement settings. Despite these challenges the next step seems more likely to be to work in nursing in the UK and to bring family to join them when financially possible. These life-histories have implications for the educational management of Zimbabwean nursing students at the level of the University, the University International Office, the School of Nursing and Midwifery, the individual nurse tutor, and the local NHS placement settings. They also have implications for the future prospects of Zimbabwe after the Mugabe regime.

While scholarship in recent decades has begun investigating women's history, museums and historical sites have been slower to do so. Although house museums are more open to interpreting women's history, the histories present often remain limited to the family and the house. In this thesis, I argue that by exploring local archival collections for women's voices, house museums can improve their presentation of women's history. Specifically, I investigate connecting nursing history to upper middle class lifestyles through the Chew family at Cliveden, historical house museum. This paper begins by exploring three local Germantown sites to analyze how women are currently presented on the house tour. Next, I investigate the letters and records of two Chew women, Anne Sophia Penn Chew and Mary Johnson Brown Chew for health concerns, care giving, and the presence of hired nurses. I then explore early nursing training programs at collections housed at the Barbara Bates Center for the Study of the History of Nursing. Using the records of nursing training programs, including the Woman's Hospital, Presbyterian Hospital, and the Visiting Nurse Society of Philadelphia, connections are made between the new trend for educated nurses and upper middle class women and lifestyle, specifically the Chews. Based on my findings, I then propose a method to interpret nursing history on the current house tour at Cliveden. For sources, I especially rely on the documents of the Chew family housed the Historical Society of Pennsylvania. I also draw heavily on the various nursing program records at the Bates Center.

The thesis examines the position of nurses during the Second Anglo-Boer War (1899 – 1902) and considers how their work helped to raise the profile of nursing. The experience of the war demonstrated the superiority of the work undertaken by trained nurses as compared with that of ‘amateurs’. At the commencement of war a small cohort of army nurses worked alongside large numbers of trained male orderlies, however these numbers proved insufficient during the period of the war and additional, entirely untrained orderlies (often convalescent soldiers) were relied upon to deliver nursing care. Against a backdrop of long term antipathy toward nurses at the seat of war, the work of both army and civilian nurses in military hospitals suggested that the clinical proficiency of trained nurses had a significant impact on military effectiveness. The thesis will develop arguments based on the personal testimonies of nurses who served during the Anglo-Boer War, relating to clinical nursing and nurses perceptions of professionalism during the period. Personal testimony will be used primarily to examine the working lives and experiences of serving nurses, as many historians simply state that the excellent work of the nurses forced changes, yet make no allusion to what this specifically entailed. Faced with the exigencies of war, including limited medical supplies and military bureaucracy (termed by nurses and doctors alike as ‘red tape’) that hindered nurses’ abilities to provide high levels of care, nurses demonstrated their developing clinical confidence. Despite accusations that nurses were ‘frivolling’ in South Africa, raising concerns over the control and organisation of nurses in future military campaigns, the social exploits of nurses on active service was not entirely detrimental to contemporary views of their professional status. Nurses were able to demonstrate their abilities to survive the hardships of war, including nursing close to the ‘front lines’ of war and the arduous conditions inherent in living under canvas on the South African veldt. Not only were nurses proving their abilities to endure hardship normally associated with masculine work, but they were also establishing their clinical capabilities. This was especially so during the serious typhoid epidemics when nurses were able to draw upon their expert knowledge to provide careful nursing care based on extensive experience. Nurses, who had undergone recognised training in Britain, demonstrated their professional competence and proved that nursing was a learned skill, not merely an innate womanly trait. The war also represented an opportunity to evidence their fitness for citizenship by using their skilled training for the benefit of the Empire. The subsequent reform of the Army Nursing Service, resulting in the establishment of the Queen Alexandra’s Imperial Military Nursing Service in 1902, suggests permanent recognition of the essential role of nurses in times of both war and peace.

The study is an oral history of the work of district nurses in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland from 1940-1974. The main themes that emerged from the study were, the wide scope of the nurses' practice, their significant relationships, and the unique nature of their role. Within the themes were concepts of self sacrifice, resilience and autonomy. The challenges the nurses faced in their daily lives from their surrounding environment and the urgent needs of patients were physically and mentally taxing. There was evidence of their resilience and strength of character when they did not flinch in difficult situations. Yet they described being 'happy at work' and relied on their faith. The study suggests that the service these women provided could be regarded as 'heroic'. The thesis offers an insight into the daily lives of district nurses in a remote part of Scotland which has never been studied before. Most nurses were trained Queen's Nurses which was evidently influential and to some a prestigious qualification.

Mary Breckinridge established the Frontier Nursing Service (FNS) in a poor, rural, underdeveloped area of the Appalachian Mountains of Eastern Kentucky in 1925 and in so doing, marked the first effort to professionalize midwifery in the United States (US). Since its inception in 1925, the FNS has survived many challenges and still exists today. This historical analysis of the FNS' s 'early years' (1925-1960) yields valuable insights into not only on how such a remarkable feat was achieved but also on how these insights could benefit nurses today. The contemporary nursing profession is struggling with many of the same internal and external environmental forces that challenged those 'early nurses.' In keeping with the fragmentation approach to cultural analysis, the FNS' s culture is explored in this thesis and its formation as a community/people-focused organization at a time in history when the nation was moving toward a corporate/consumer-focused society is examined. The political implications for the FNS and its founder as the Service negotiated its place in both Appalachian and wider-society; the lack of clarity and disruptions that developed within the organization with regard to its move from a decentralized to centralized power structure and resultant relational transformation within its community; its work environment, nurse-physician relationships, educational environments, nurse recruitment and retention practices and public image are then examined. The oral history narratives ofFNS nurses and non-FNS nurses currently in practice as well as nurse and non-nurse FNS staff and community members have been employed in the study to build as complete a picture as possible of the FNS, the nurses who worked within it and the culture of nursing. The critical threads which emerged in relation to nursing's chronic recurrent recruitment problems include: retention, work environment and public image. These 'crisis issues' are woven throughout the wider socio-economic, political and health care agendas of US national culture. This cultural change has gradually intruded into Eastern Appalachia and is still reflected in the narratives of nurses in practice today as reported here. A morecomprehensive, albeit complex, set of insights to nursing's ongoing crisis includes consideration that the profession has inherited a culture that has proven to be selfdefeating as it has perpetuated many of the corporate cultural traits that can be seen to be incongruent with its professional identity and goals. The continual crisis issues commonly cited as causes of 'nursing shortages' are not created solely by those barriers which exist external to the profession, such as a lack of political power, funding or even the institutionalization of health care. They are also being perpetuated by the profession's inability to deal with the barriers inside the existing culture. The question emerging from this analysis of the FNS and which needs to be posed to the profession as a whole is: "Has the embracing of institutional identity (namely, the business and medical models) within the nursing profession, its higher education and practice settings impeded the discipline's ability to impact more successfully for sustained, positive change within these environments?" In order for sustained positive change to occur nurses must be willing to unveil those barriers within the profession itself that deal with the very basic question of professional identity. This historical analysis supported by the oral history testimony offered within this thesis offers some insights into how this question might be further explored
