Background: Nurses have an important role in maintaining a patient's nutrition near the end of life. Aims: To define nursing nutrition strategies with the person near the end of life and their families; systematise the elements to be considered in artificial nutrition decision-making and evaluate the nursing interventions' influence on therapeutic obstinacy risk. Methods: A sample of 11 articles were selected and the results considered strategies to promote oral feeding before artificial nutrition; the follow-up of the health-disease process by nurses and described the nurse's role as a privileged patient advocate in the defence of the ethical principles of decision-making. These principles consider symptomatology, prognosis, psychology and the emotional significance of nutrition. Conclusion: Nurses are qualified professionals with a critical role in the patient's care due to the proximity they have with the patient; the evidence seems to show a relationship between nursing interventions and the reduction of the risk of therapeutic obstinacy; however, there are no studies in this specific area.

Burnout not only affects psychiatric nurses' ability to provide optimal patient care, but its consequences extend to the nurse's psychological and physical health. Couched in a cognitive-transactional model, the broad aim of the current study was to measure burnout levels for psychiatric nurses and to determine the respective roles of the environment and the individual on burnout levels. Burnout levels were measured using Maslach and Jackson's (1986) Burnout Inventory. Environmental variables measured included work load, collegial support, role conflict and role ambiguity. Finally, Antonovsky's (1987) sense of coherence (SOC) measured the characteristics of the individual. Although burnout levels were generally high, a low sense of personal accomplishment was particularly problematic. Emotional exhaustion and depersonalisation correlated significantly with all factors of the work environment and with the SOC. Personal accomplishment related only to role conflict. Multiple regression analyses showed the sense of coherence and work load to explain a large proportion of both emotional exhaustion and depersonalisation, and role conflict to explain a small but significant amount of the variance in personal accomplishment. Moderated multiple regression analyses added to a growing body of research pointing towards a possible direct effect of the SOC on burnout.

Streszczenie:
According to Communication Accommodation Theory, overaccommodation in intergenerational communication with elders is frequently based on stereotyped expectations of frailty and dependence. This study examined the role of nonverbal behaviors in such overaccommodation. Adult volunteers ( N = 120; mean age = 29 years) read either a patronizing or neutral version of one of three conversations between a nursing home resident and a nurse. As in our earlier study, the nurse's use of the patronizing conversational style was rated as less respectful, less nurturant, and more frustrating for the resident than the neutral style. The main analyses indicated that negative nonverbal behaviors were rated as significantly more likely to occur with the patronizing style while positive nonverbal behaviors were rated as significantly less likely. The negative evaluative impact of patronizing style was especially apparent for instrumental task situations with high compliance demands. The effects for conversational style were essentially replicated for a smaller sample (N = 50) of formal care providers.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to draw on organizational psychology, innovation and knowledge management literatures to investigate the impact of a nurse’s person-organization (P-O) fit on his/her innovative work behavior (IWB). Furthermore, in order to understand the psychological mechanisms surrounding this relationship, the authors examine the mediating role of psychological empowerment and the moderating role of knowledge sharing behavior. Design/methodology/approach Data were collected from 441 nurses and 73 doctors through structured questionnaires from four public sector hospitals in Thailand. Findings Results of the study indicate that nurse’s P-O fit is positively related to both self (nurse) and doctor’s ratings of innovative behaviors and that psychological empowerment mediates this relationship. These results imply that a nurse’s perception of value congruence impacts his/her perception about feeling of empowerment, which in turn helps in engaging him/her into acts of innovativeness more often. The results also show that the relationship between P-O fit and IWB is stronger among nurses who frequently share their best practices and mistakes with co-workers. Originality/value Employee involvement in innovative work is of crucial importance for organization’s competitiveness, especially in the nursing profession. The compatibility between personal and organizational values is a vital ingredient of our personal, social and professional worlds. Although research has identified some antecedents of nurses’ IWB, it is unclear how P-O fit influence nurses’ IWB. Nurses with stronger value congruence when empowered psychologically may respond more effectively to display IWBs in current dynamic and challenging public health care work environments.

Introduction: Early assessment and management of depression and anxiety for patients after stroke is critical. However, suboptimal provision of psychological care is widely reported. Nurses are the largest professional group to care for patients post stroke and have an important role in addressing their emotional wellbeing. Aim: The aim of this paper is to examine nurse’s knowledge, experiences, and perceptions of the provision of psychological care to patients post stroke in Ireland. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive survey design involving both quantitative and qualitative items was administered to a convenience sample of seventy-four (n=74) nurses working in six Irish community hospital rehabilitation units. Results: Findings demonstrate suboptimal psychological care provision for patients post stroke with no formal pre-defined care pathways. Despite nurse’s knowledge of psychological problems and symptomology, participants revealed receiving limited training in psychological monitoring and no systemic allocation of psychological care duties. This research suggests that pre-defined/formal care pathways; access to psychology expertise; further training and support for members of the Multi-Disciplinary-Team has the potential to improve the provision of psychological care for patients post stroke. Conclusions: This study has implications for the reform and development of rehabilitation services in relation to practice, education, and research. It identifies opportunities to support nurses to improve the delivery of psychological care for patients post stroke.

On the Study of Values the over-all pattern of values for male nurses was very similar to that of the average male nonnurse and significantly different from that of female nurses on the theoretical and aesthetic scales. Nursing experience, age, and highest degree earned in nursing were not correlated with Bern scores or Study of Values scores. No support was found for the idea that nursing feminizes male nurses. Implications of these results for the recruitment of male nursing students were discussed.

AimsAttracting more doctors and nurses to mental health careers is vital to support the growing demand for mental health services. Despite low numbers of doctors choosing psychiatry, and a shortage of mental health nurses, psychology degrees remain a popular choice. This study explores the understanding and knowledge students studying psychology A Level have about mental health careers, and the careers guidance they have received. We ask ‘are students who are interested in studying psychology at university an untapped resource for recruitment to psychiatry and mental health nursing?’.MethodsFocus groups were held with A-Level psychology students considering applying to university to study psychology. Focus group discussions were recorded, transcribed and anonymised and were analysed using thematic analysis.ResultsThree key themes were identified. Firstly, student interest in psychology as a degree subject (with mental illness, neurobiology and human behaviour cited as key interests). Secondly, student motivation for a future career in which they would have a therapeutic role working with people with mental illnesses. Thirdly, student knowledge, or lack of it, around what a career in psychology or other mental health careers would entail, and the pathways to these.ConclusionThere remains uncertainty in young people regarding what the different types of mental health practitioner roles are, and the career pathways to these. More detailed, accurate information made available to students interested in working with people with a mental illness may lead to more students considering a career in mental health nursing or medicine (and then psychiatry) as an alternative to a psychology. It is important that those aspiring to become clinical psychologists understand the qualifications required and competitive nature of this profession. Inaccurate information runs the risk of students acquiring significant university debt, only to find they are not qualified for the type of role they envisaged. A lack of accurate, high quality and timely careers information may also be depriving psychiatry and mental health nursing of enthusiastic, able and motivated students. This study adds support to the need for better careers guidance and awareness around mental health careers for school and sixth form students.

Nurses are continuously exposed to stressors and psychological and physical risks that can negatively influence their daily work. These adverse psychosocial circumstances, accompanied by the poor self-perception of health, well-being, and quality of life, may trigger burnout. The positive psychology approach pursues a growth of passion at work, increased job satisfaction, and occupational health, both mental and physical, for the optimal performance of the nursing role. In this way, a theoretical analysis was conducted to describe the basic constructs of positive psychology, elements such as engagement, passion at work, centrality, and meaning of work, which could act as protective factors in the nursing profession. The results show that if health professionals are not physically involved, cognitively alert, and emotionally connected, they may not offer the quality care patients require. Positive psychology helps nurses in facing their complex reality and relevant daily activities in order to provide quality care. These efforts towards a humanist nursing care in which professionals are able to care for the others as well as themselves should be made.

Background: Nurses’ work engagement is essential both for the quality of the service provided and occupational health. However, there is a lack of adequate information about nurses’ engagement in healthcare organizations that are affected by various factors in the context of Health Psychology.Purpose: This study was aimed at investigating the association between leadership styles of supervisors and work engagement, and elucidating the role of organizational support in this relationship. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 85 nurses from the health organizations in Catalonia, Spain, recruited via a snowball procedure. Leadership styles and Three Outcome Scales (TOS) were evaluated through the Multifactorial Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ) as independent variables. POS as an Organizational Support Test assessed a mediating variable (POS), and work engagement as a dependent variable was evaluated by the Utrecht Job Involvement Scale (UWES).Results: The results displayed differences in work engagement depending on job positions. Besides, the results revealed a positive association between leadership styles and TOS with work engagement, other than laissez-faire. Additionally, POS illustrated a positive association with work engagement (r=0.447, p<0.01). Leadership styles except for laissez-faire and TOS positively affect POS; also, TOS significantly predicted work engagement (β=0.581, t(78)=2.196, p<.05). Furthermore, results confirmed that POS mediates the relationship between leadership styles and TOS with work engagement (z=-3.490; z=3.117; z=3.521; z=3.791, p=0.000).Conclusion: Transformational and transactional leadership are two main styles significantly affecting nurses’ engagement with their work, while laissez-faire decreases nurses’ work engagement; therefore, supervisors and leaders of healthcare organizations should consider it. Consequently, nurses with a high POS show superior engagement levels at work. The research sheds new light on health psychology and the clinical area, particularly in nurses’ work engagement.

In the closed wards of mental health institutions, moral decisions are made concerning the use of forced seclusion. In this article we focus on how these moral decisions are made and can be improved. We present a case study concerning moral deliberations on the use of seclusion and its prevention among nurses of a closed mental health ward. Moral psychology provides an explanation of how moral judgments are developed through processes of interaction. We will make use of the Social Intuitionist Model of Jonathan Haidt that emphasizes the role of emotions, intuitions and the social context in moral judgments and reasoning. We argue that this model can help to explain social dynamics in the context of enforced seclusion. In the discussion we explore how moral psychology can be complemented with the normative perspective of dialogical ethics to develop strategies for improving psychiatric practices. We conclude that social processes play an important role in moral deliberations and that moral development can be fostered by bringing in new perspectives in the dialogue. Moral case deliberation provides a practical tool to systematically organize moral reflections among nurses on the work floor.

Both job satisfaction and a nurse’s individual traits may have an impact on nurses’ life satisfaction. Given the relatively high level of stress associated with the nursing profession, account should be taken of the fact that numerous destructive factors also affect life satisfaction. In the nursing profession commitment, concern for patient welfare, a high sense of responsibility for the life and health of another person causes both an excessive psychological and physical burden, which in many cases leads to broadly defined stress and in consequence to burnout syndrome. The aim of the paper was directed toward the analysis of stress, burnout and life satisfaction and demonstrating the relationship between these variables in a group of surgical and psychiatric nurses. Two groups of equal size participated in the study. They included 100 surgical nurses (average age: 47/average years of experience: 25), 100 psychiatric nurses (average age: 42/average years of experience: 19) employed by hospitals situated in the south of Poland. Research tools: occupational burnout – the Maslach Burnout Inventory, stress - the Stevan Hobfoll's Self-Assessment Questionnaire to measure stress, life satisfaction – Satisfaction with Life Scale, and questionnaire of socio-demographic data were administered. Stress and occupational burnout are shown to only have an impact on the life satisfaction of surgical nurses. The less burnt-out nurses felt with regard to lowered sense of personal achievement, the higher their life satisfaction levels were. In the context of work, stress plays a role of mediator in the relationship between life satisfaction and the second dimension of occupational burnout – depersonalization in both surveyed groups. A sense of life satisfaction is desired by every human being and may refer to different aspects of their lives such as: work, income, family and friends. In reality job satisfaction has a significant influence on the individual’s feeling of life satisfaction. The obtained results clearly indicate that some action needs to be taken in order to prevent professional burnout. It is therefore sensible to start action already at university and include the subject of occupational burnout, its causes, and ways of coping with it in the teaching curriculum.

Background and Objectives: The fatigue, stress, and burnout of nurses lead to them frequently making mistakes, which have a negative impact not only on the safety of the patients but also on their psychology. The ability to bounce back from mistakes is crucial for nurses. Nursing staff members’ physical and mental health, particularly their depression, is far from ideal, and this ill health is directly correlated with the frequency of self-reported medical errors. The nurses’ mental and physical health are also positively correlated with their perception of wellness support at work. This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the status of nurses’ mental and physical health regarding clinical errors and the impact of resilience on coping with these situations. Materials and Methods: A total of 364 healthcare professionals participated in this research; 87.5% of them were females and 12.5% of them were males. Most of the participants were 22–35 years old. The median number of years of employment was nine. Clinical nurses anonymously and voluntarily completed a special structured questionnaire that included questions from different validated tools in order to assess their state of physical and mental wellbeing after events of stress and errors made during their practice. Results: In total, 49.4% of the nurses had made an error on their own, and 73.2% had witnessed an error that someone else had made. At the time of the error, 29.9% of the participants were in charge of more than 20 patients, while 28.9% were responsible for a maximum of three patients. Participants who were 36–45 years old had more resilience (p = 0.049) and experienced fewer negative emotions than participants who were 22–35 years old. The participants who mentioned more positive feelings according to their mental state had greater resilience (p > 0.001). Conclusions: Errors were likely to happen during clinical practice due to nurses’ negative experiences. The level of resilience among the nursing population was found to play a very important role not only in making mistakes but also in coping with errors during their daily routine. Wellness and prevention must be given top priority in all healthcare systems across the country in order to promote nurses’ optimal health and wellbeing, raise the standard of care, and reduce the likelihood of expensive, avoidable medical errors. Healthcare administrations should promote prevention programs for stress occurrence in order to support nurses’ wellbeing maintenance.

Positive occupational health psychology (POHP) examines the mechanisms that promote the health and wellbeing of workers, in addition to the risk factors arising from work activity. The aim of this study was to analyse the mediating role of perceived stress in the effect that self-efficacy has on engagement in nurses. The sample was comprised of 1777 currently working nurses. We administered the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES), the Perceived Stress Questionnaire and the General Self-Efficacy Scale. Following bivariate correlational analysis, multiple linear regression analysis and simple and multiple mediation analysis, the results showed self-efficacy to be a powerful personal resource that positively predicts employee engagement, although the effect diminishes when there are mediating variables of stress. We found differences in the way the different aspects of stress mediated the relationship between self-efficacy and the engagement dimensions. “Energy–joy” was the strongest mediating variable for all of the engagement dimensions and this, together with “harassment–social acceptance” dampened the effect of self-efficacy on vigour and dedication, whereas “Overload” was only a mediator for dedication. As nurses work in a stressful environment, risk factors arise from work activity, so hospital management should design interventions to enhance their workers’ personal resources and improve personal and organizational wellbeing.

Background. Burnout is a common psychological syndrome among nurses, especially in the first few years of working. However, limited studies have evaluated the factors related to burnout among junior nurses. Aims. To investigate the levels of psychological flexibility, stress, and burnout among junior nurses and examine the role of demographic and workplace relationship factors, psychological flexibility, and perceived stress on burnout among junior nurses. Materials and Methods. A convenience sample of 481 junior nurses was recruited from three tertiary hospitals in China from July 2021 to August 2022. Data were collected, including demographic data, workplace relationships, psychological flexibility (measured by experiential avoidance and cognitive fusion), perceived stress, and burnout. The Independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, Wilcoxon–Mann–Whitney test, Kruskal–Wallis test, Spearman correlation, and hierarchical regression were used to analyze the data. Results. Junior nurses had a high level of burnout in different dimensions. Nurses with an undergraduate education, nurses working in the first year, and a lack of support from supervisors and poor colleague (nurse-nurse and nurse-doctor) relationships had the lowest level of psychological flexibility and the highest level of perceived stress and burnout. Spearman correlation indicated that experiential avoidance, cognitive fusion, perceived stress, and burnout were positively associated with each other. The regression model showed that psychological flexibility (especially cognitive fusion) and perceived stress influenced burnout in junior nurses. Conclusions. Higher psychological flexibility and lower perceived stress appear to improve burnout in junior nurses. Therefore, interventions targeting these two factors may provide a viable direction for the reduction of burnout among junior nurses. Implications for Nursing Management. Hospital authorities should create a harmonious working environment and provide some psychology training programs for junior nurses.

The current study sought to investigate and add critical consequences of work engagement to the literature on psychological capital in the healthcare sector of Pakistan. For better understanding of the mechanism, Positive Emotions (PE) is added as potential mediator between the relationship of psychological capital (PsyCap) and work engagement. Also, the moderating role of emotional intelligence is studied. A total of 370 registered nurses working in tertiary public and private hospitals of Lahore participated in the survey. Using convenience sampling technique, the data were collected through a standardized and structured questionnaire using cross-sectional time frame. Results revealed that PE partially mediated the relationship between PsyCap and work engagement. Moderation revealed a statistically significant moderation of EI between PsyCap and PE. Also, it was worth noting that mediating effect of positive emotions among psychological capital and work engagement was moderated by emotional intelligence at all three levels of moderation. Workplace interventions need to be developed and implemented to increase the psychological capital and work engagement of registered nurses. Findings from this research have implications for registered nurses and hospital management as well as the literature of positive psychology. The results underlined the vital role of sub dimensions of PsyCap, EI and PE in developing work engagement among registered nurses.

In this study, quantitative and qualitative data are presented to examine the direct and mediated effect of personal bullying on nurses’ turnover intentions via job stress. The study also investigates the moderating role of political skill on the association between personal bullying and job stress. The study employed an explanatory sequential mixed methods design. In the first, quantitative phase of the study, data were collected from a sample of 324 registered nurses working in public sector hospitals of Pakistan using a self-administered questionnaire. Results from variance-based structural equation modeling showed that personal bullying has a direct as well as an indirect effect on nurses’ turnover intentions through job stress. Furthermore, results showed that political skill attenuates the effect of personal bullying on job stress. The second, qualitative phase was conducted as a follow-up to the quantitative results involving individual interviews from 11 nurses. Overall, the qualitative data validated the key quantitative results. The study is among the first to employ a mixed methods design to investigate the direct and mediated effects of personal bullying on nurses’ turnover intentions and the stress-buffering role of political skill.

Using self-determination theory we investigated the relationship between nurses' perception of union support and work well-being. Data were collected in a self-reported online survey at two time points with 356 nurses employed at five third-tier hospitals in China. The results demonstrated that perceived union support had a statistically significant positive effect on nurses' work well-being. Competence and relatedness need types mediated this relationship, but the mediating role of autonomy needs was not statistically significant. Our findings enrich the theoretical research on Chinese nurses' work well-being and provide useful enlightenment for the practice of hospital management in China.

Background: Recently, workers employed in vaccination points around the world have been subjected to very high workloads to counter the progress of the COVID-19 epidemic. This workload has a negative effect on their well-being. Environmental psychology studies have shown how the physical characteristics of the workplace environment can influence employees’ well-being. Furthermore, studies in the psychology of art show how art can improve the health of individuals. Objectives: The aim of this research was to test a moderated mediation model to verify how appreciation of workplace aesthetics can impact the level of exhaustion of staff working in a vaccination center, the mediating role of positive and negative affects, and the moderating role of interest in art. Methods: Data were collected from a sample of 274 workers (physicians, nurses, reception, and administrative staff) working in the same vaccination center in Italy. Participants answered a self-report questionnaire during a rest break. We used a cross-sectional design. Results: The results show that appreciation of workplace aesthetics impacts employees’ level of exhaustion. This relationship is mediated by positive and negative affects, and interest in art moderates the relationship between positive affects and exhaustion. Conclusions: These findings indicate the central role of workplace aesthetics in influencing healthcare workers’ well-being, and how interest in art can reduce exhaustion levels. Nursing burnout is associated with reduced nursing performance outcomes. Positive psychological capital is known to play an important role in improving workers’ job performance. However, the association among the three variables has rarely been addressed. The purpose of this cross-sectional descriptive study was to explore the association between burnout and nursing performance outcomes among Korean nurses working at a tertiary hospital and the mediating role of psychological capital in this relationship. Recruited through convenience sampling, a total of 285 nurses provided data on their demographic characteristics and completed a structured questionnaire consisting of items from the Professional Quality of Life Scale (burnout), Nursing Performance Scale, and Psychology Capital Questionnaire. Descriptive statistics, student’s t-tests, one-way analysis of variance, Pearson’s correlation coefficients, and multiple linear regression analyses were used to analyze data. The significance of the mediation effect was obtained using a bootstrap approach with the PROCESS macro. The mean age of participants was 30.51 years, and most participants were females (94.0%) and unmarried (71.6%); more than half (57.5%) experienced a severe workload. The average (±standard deviation) scores of burnout, nursing performance outcomes, and positive psychological capital were 28.77 ± 4.93, 2.98 ± 0.32, and 3.19 ± 0.45, respectively. Burnout was associated with nursing performance among clinical nurses (β = −0.20, p < 0.001). Positive psychological capital mediated the association between burnout and nursing performance outcomes (β = 0.41, p < 0.001). These findings contribute to the understanding that burnout among nurses could be reduced by increased positive psychological capital, which results in improved performance outcomes. The findings also indicate that interventions to improve positive psychological capital should be developed and implemented for nurses’ burnout management and improvement in nursing performance outcomes.

Objective:Older adults are vulnerable to postoperative delirium after surgery and anesthesia, which may affect their cognitive function and increase depressive symptoms. Anesthesia nurses are dominant in the number of anesthesia medical teams. This study aimed to examine the differences between anesthesia nurses' self- perceived roles and competencies and their recognition of the roles and competencies of anesthesia specialty nurses. Methods:A cross-sectional study was conducted. A structured questionnaire based on a guideline of the International Council of Nurses was designed. Results:The participated anesthesia nurses’ (N=200) scale scores and mean scores for each question on the self-perceived role and competency scales were lower than the scores on their recognition of the roles and competencies of anesthesia specialty nurse scales. Regarding the self-perceived roles, the scholar domain received the lowest score (Mean= 2.99, SD= 1.00), while the self-perceived competencies, the management domain received the lowest score (Mean = 3.81, SD = 0.67). Similarly, the scholar domain received the lowest score (mean = 3.34, SD = 1.068) in recognition of the roles of an anesthetic specialist nurse, while the management domain received the lowest score (mean = 4.18, SD = 0.58) in the recognition of the competencies of an anesthesia specialist nurse. Anesthesia nurses' self-perceived roles were affected by their nursing ladder and the hospital level at which anesthesia nurses work. Their self-perceived competencies were affected by their nursing ladder and salary. In addition, their recognition of the roles as anesthesia specialist nurses was affected by the hospital level at which anesthesia nurses work. The nursing ladder affected their recognition of the competencies of an anesthesia specialist nurse. Conclusion:This study has demonstrated that anesthesia nurses must improve their self-perceptions of their roles and competencies to satisfy the expectations of their roles and competencies as anesthesia specialty nurses. The findings of this study could be used to develop future anesthesia nurse education and training programs to provide better care to elderly patients.

Although potential future medical errors can best be prevented through reporting near misses, on-site error reporting is not being achieved to a satisfactory level. We surveyed 489 nurses working in 34 wards at a university hospital in Korea in regard to their understanding of factors related to error reporting. Survey items included willingness to report near misses, defensive silence, leader-member exchange, role clarity, and knowledge-sharing climate. Results indicated that defensive silence in the workplace and unclearly defined roles reduced nurses' willingness to report errors, whereas trust-based leader-member exchange (LMX) increased the intention. Knowledge-sharing climates contributed to increasing nurses' intention to report errors, even among those of a silent disposition and in settings where the quality of LMX between the nurses and head nurse was not high.

Purpose – Extant research has shown the positive effects of value congruence on individual attitudes, behaviors and performance. However, very few studies have been conducted to examine the difference in the relationship between value congruence and attitudinal outcomes across people of different attributes. The purpose of this paper is to examine how the relationships between employee-organization value congruence and job attitudes vary across different occupational groups, with the focus on different levels of nurses. The study provides evidence to organizations to adopt better approaches to harness the benefit from employees’ spontaneous work motivation. Design/methodology/approach – Nursing homes provide a unique research context because of the different nursing occupations with varying degree of identifying characteristics including educational attainment, skill level, income and decision-making power. The present study thus examines how the relationships between nurses-home value congruence and nurses’ job attitudes vary across different nursing occupations, instrumented by a survey of nursing staff of nursing homes in a Midwestern state in the USA. Findings – Consistent with prior research, value congruence is found positively associated with nurses’ job satisfaction and organizational commitment, but negatively with turnover intention. Consistent with the “diminishing marginal effect” argument, the relationships between value congruence and job satisfaction and organizational commitment are found more pronounced among nurses of lower occupational level. Originality/value – The extant literature does not explicitly compare the effect of within-occupation value congruence on various attitudinal and behavioral outcomes across different occupations. As values have individual and social foundations, in a specific workplace context, it is impractical, if not impossible, to gain a comprehensive view of employees’ value profile and work-related consequences without looking further into the differences across types of employee. Although without sufficient existing literature to compare to, the present study does provide consistent results with theoretical predictions, and display a relatively clear picture of how the relationships between value congruence and job attitudes are unwrapped along the occupational dimension.

Background and Objectives: Evidence shows that throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, nurses suffered from emotional symptoms, yet in spite of this, few studies within “positive psychology” have analyzed the emergence/promotion of positive traits, such as hardiness. In this context, the present study aimed to test a model regarding the mediating role of self-efficacy between anxiety experienced at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic and hardiness assessed six months later among nurses in critical care units (CCU) in Spain. Materials and Methods: An observational, descriptive, prospective longitudinal study with two data collection periods: (1) from the 1 to the 21 June 2020 (final phase of the state of alarm declared in Spain on 14 March) in which socio-demographic and occupational variables, anxiety (Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale, DASS-21), self-efficacy (General Self-Efficacy Scale, GSES) and basal resilience (Resilience Scale-14, RS-14) were assessed, and (2) a follow-up 6 months later (January–March 2021) in which hardiness (Occupational Hardiness Questionnaire, OHQ) was evaluated. To analyze the data, multivariate regressions were performed using the PROCESS macro (simple mediation, model 4). Results: A total of 131 Spanish nurses from CCUs, with a mean age of 40.54 years (88.5% women) participated in the study. Moderate and severe levels of anxiety were observed in 19.1% of the sample. Significant and positive correlations were observed between self-efficacy, hardiness and resilience (all p < 0.001). Significant negative correlations were observed between anxiety and self-efficacy (p < 0.001), hardiness (p = 0.027) and resilience (p = 0.005). The indirect effect of anxiety on hardiness through self-efficacy was significant (Effect (SE) = −0.275 (0.100); LLCI = −0.487, ULCI = −0.097), contributing to 28% of the variance, including resilience (p = 0.015), age (p = 0.784), gender (p = 0.294) and years of experience (p = 0.652) as covariates. A total mediation was observed (non-significant anxiety-hardiness direct effect; Effect (SE) = −0.053 (0.215), t = 0.248, p = 0.804, LLCI = −0.372, ULCI = 0.479). Conclusions: The results suggest that in Spanish CCU nurses, anxiety experienced at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic may contribute to the development of hardiness through positive resources such as self-efficacy.

Background: The coronavirus pandemic has caused fear and anxiety worldwide, especially amongst nurses. Examining the psychological effects of this disease on the mental health of nurses involved in the care of patients with this infection is critically important. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between the nurses’ psychology capital and their views on mental security, job satisfaction and clinical performance. Methods: One hundred consenting nurses from a university general hospital in Arak, Iran, completed three well-established questionnaires that asked about their psychology knowledge, views on mental security and clinical performance. The data were analyzed statistically, using confirmatory factor analysis and partial least squares method. Also, the path analysis test, t-test and regression beta coefficient were used to test the study’s four hypotheses on psychological capital and security. Results: The findings indicated that there were significant relationships, based on the theoretical model, amongst the nurses’ views on their psychology knowledge (or capital) and that it had a positive and significant effect on nurses' psychological security for working with COVID-19 patients. Also, the knowledge positively impacted their clinical performance and professional efficacy, while improving their sense of optimism, patience and hope for future. Conclusions: There were positive interactions between the nurses’ psychological capital and the clinical performance, mental security, optimism and hope. Nurses with psychology capital had less worries on these subjects than those who lacked it. Such nurses believed they were more resourceful and able to provide better care to patients with coronavirus infection than those who lacked the knowledge.

Abstract Objectives Despite there being many models for how spiritual care should be provided, the way nurses actually provide spiritual care often differs from these models. Based on the premise that the way a person enacts their work role is related to how they understand that role, this study aims to describe the qualitatively different ways that nurses understand their spiritual care role. Methods A convenience sample of 66 American nurses completed an anonymous, online questionnaire about what spiritual care means for them and what they generally do to provide spiritual care. Their responses were analyzed phenomenographically. Results Four qualitatively different ways of understanding emerged: active management of the patient’s experience, responsive facilitation of patient’s wishes, accompaniment on the patient’s dying journey, and empowering co-action with the patient. Each understanding was found to demonstrate a specific combination of 5 attributes that described the spiritual care role: nurse directivity, the cues used for spiritual assessment, and the nurse’s perception of intimacy, the patient, and the task. Significance of results The findings of this study may explain why nurses vary in their spiritual care role and can be used to assess and develop competence in spiritual care.

Surface acting—the management of emotional displays as part of a nurse’s work role—is increasingly getting scholars’ attention in organizational behavior. Previous research focused on the relationship between surface acting and outcomes (such as psychological well-being) on the basis of resource-centric theories, ignoring the subjective stance of surface acting provider. According to self-determination theory, surface acting affects an individual’s well-being through stimulating autonomous or controlled work motivation. Taking nurses as the subjects, the current study proposed that surface acting would affect job satisfaction and further psychological well-being through nurses’ controlled work motivation, and work and family support would moderate the above relationships in diverse directions. An online survey of n = 342 nurses working at a hospital in central China was conducted, evaluating surface acting, job satisfaction, psychological well-being, workplace support, and family support. Results indicated that surface acting negatively influenced nurses’ psychological well-being through job satisfaction. In addition, the results highlighted the two-faced aspect of social support, in which work support positively moderated the relationships between surface acting, job satisfaction, and psychological well-being, while family support intensified the abovementioned relationships negatively. These findings have important implications for surface acting, social support research, and managerial practices.

Based on emotions as social information (EASI) theory, the current study proposed how and when patient gratitude expression could promote nurses’ innovative performance. Using a time-lagged data of 649 nurses from three class A tertiary hospitals in China, the results showed that patient gratitude expression was positively related to nurses’ innovative performance, and nurses’ work meaningfulness mediated such effect. Furthermore, supervisory support moderated the relationship of work meaningfulness with nurses’ innovative performance, as well as the indirect relationship between patient gratitude expression and innovative performance through work meaningfulness, such that the indirect relationship was stronger when supervisory support is higher. Our research helps to expand our understanding of how patient gratitude expression as an organizational external factor influences nurses’ innovation in healthcare, and meanwhile, provides management insights for hospital managers to focus on patient gratitude expression and enhance nurse innovation.

Background: Nurses can experience psychological trauma after adverse nursing events, making it likely for them to become second victims (SVs). This negatively impacts patient safety and nurses’ development. This study aims to understand the status of psychological trauma and recovery of nurses as SVs in domestic China and examine the influencing mechanism of cognitive rumination during their recovery from psychological damage. Methods: This was a cross-sectional survey. An online questionnaire was completed by 233 nurses from across China. Data were collected using Chinese versions of the Second Victim Experience and Support Evaluation Scale, the Incident-related Rumination Meditation Questionnaire, and the post-traumatic growth (PTG) Rating Scale. Descriptive statistics, correlation, and regression, as well as mediation analysis, were used for different analyses in this study. Results: Participants experienced apparent psychological traumas (4.65 ± 0.5583) with a certain degree of PTG (76.18 ± 16.0040); they reported a strong need for psychological support (95.7%). Psychological trauma was positively and negatively correlated with rumination and PTG (r = 0.465, p < 0.001; r = −0.155, p < 0.05) respectively. Both psychologically impaired experience and rumination had significant predictive effects on participants’ PTG (both, p < 0.001). Nurses’ active rumination significantly mediated their psychological recovery from trauma to PTG (p < 0.05), but the effect of invasive rumination was not significant (p > 0.05).Limitation: The specific manifestations of the mechanism of invasive rumination are not clarified in this study. Conclusion: The present study investigated the psychological trauma of SV nurses as well as their support needs, and explored the role of cognitive rumination in the psychological repair and PTG of SV nurses. Results showed that SV nurses’ active rumination on adverse nursing events could promote their recovery from psychological trauma, but invasive rumination could not. This study provides a trauma-informed approach to care at the clinical level for nurses who experience psychological trauma caused by adverse events.

COVID-19 has affected millions of people around the globe. People's mental health, especially those of nurses, has been primarily affected by the fear of this virus. More focus has been paid to vaccination and treatment of the virus, but less attestation has been given to addressing the mental health of people affected by the virus. Empirical studies show that different external factors are not easily manageable and controllable by the individual. This study preliminarily explores the connection between fear of COVID-19 and secondary traumatic stress in nurses. Further, it examines the moderating effects of occupational self-efficacy on the relationship between fear of COVID-19 and secondary traumatic stress. Data for the study was collected from the nurses of six large hospitals in Karachi, Pakistan. The final analysis was performed on 243 samples. Studies on COVID-19 suggest that increased occupational self-efficacy decreases fear and its impact. This study offers insights for managers to develop stress management programs and provide proper training and counseling sessions to the nurses to motivate them emotionally. Theoretically, this study broadens the understanding of the theory of emotions by using the pandemic as a stressor. Future studies may explore different roles of occupational self-efficacy and study its influential role in managing different kinds of emotions explained by the theory of emotions. Managers at the workplace could design different self-efficacy training for nurses to increase their self-motivation to fight different types of stress they face at the workplace.
