Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the individual and joint effects of collative design factors, complexity and novelty, on aesthetic response to apparel products; and whether the influence of these factors is moderated by consumers’ centrality of visual product aesthetics (CVPA). Design/methodology/approach A mixed factorial experimental design, using women’s tops with design complexity and novelty (high vs low) manipulated orthogonally, was conducted among 260 female participants to test the model and its corresponding hypotheses. Findings Consumers’ aesthetic response was more positive for high than low complexity and novelty apparel designs. Further, when viewed in combination, high complexity + low novelty and low complexity + high novelty apparel designs were favored over high complexity + high novelty and low complexity + low novelty apparel designs, respectively. High CVPA consumers were more distinguishing than low CVPA consumers with respect to novelty in apparel designs. Practical implications This study suggests that firms need to be aware that complexity and novelty are crucial for consumers when judging apparel designs. Originality/value This study fills an important knowledge gap in the aesthetics literature by drawing on the processing fluency theory and Wundt curve and considering the joint effect of novelty and complexity, both critical determinants of a product’s marketplace success.

Through billions of years of evolution, a latent record of successful and failed design practices has developed in nature. The endeavors to exploit this record have resulted in numerous successful products in various fields of engineering, including, but not limited to, networking, propulsion, surface engineering, and robotics. In this work, a study of existing biomimetic designs has been carried out by categorizing the designs according to the biological organizational level, the abstraction level, and a novelty measure. The criterion of novelty has been used as a partial measure of the quality of bio-inspired and biomimetic designs already introduced, or ready to be introduced to the market. Through this review and categorization, we recognize patterns in existing biomimetic and bio-inspired products by analyzing their cross-categorical distribution. Using the distribution, we identify the categories which yield novel bio-inspired designs. We also examine the distribution to identify less explored areas of bio-inspired design. Additionally, this study is a step forward in aiding the practitioners of biomimetics in identifying the categories which yield the highest novelty products in their area of interest.

Purpose This study aims to provide a holistic understanding of how visual storytelling influences the objective and subjective cognitive responses of consumers, namely objective aesthetic impression and subjective aesthetic association, and aesthetic judgments in response to differing levels of novelty in design innovations. Design/methodology/approach A mixed-factorial experimental study manipulating the novelty of chair designs (moderate/high) and visual design stories (present/absent) was conducted among 263 female US consumers to test the proposed research model. Findings With respect to the main effects of novelty and visual design stories, consumers had more positive cognitive responses and aesthetic judgments to: product designs with moderate (vs high) novelty; and products with visual design stories than without. A significant interaction effect uncovered that visual design stories particularly aided products with high (vs moderate) design novelty with respect to objective aesthetic impressions. Examination of the structural relationships between the variables revealed that subjective aesthetic associations mediate the relationship between objective aesthetic impressions and aesthetic judgments. Practical implications To mitigate risk in radical design innovations, marketers should use visual storytelling to communicate product form associations and enable consumers to successfully decode the meaning of novel designs during initial encounters. Originality/value By examining a holistic model involving both perceptual and conceptual product concepts, this study fills a critical research void to develop insightful implications on bridging the gap between novel product designs and consumer understanding.

Design artifacts in online innovation communities are increasingly becoming a primary source of innovation for organizations. A distinguishing feature of such communities is that they are organized around design artifacts, not around people. The search for novel innovations thus equates to a search for novel designs. This is not a trivial problem since the novelty of a design is a function of its relationship to other designs, and this relationship changes as each design is added. These relations between artifacts affect both consumption and production. Moreover, these relations form a landscape whose structure affects the emergence of novelty. We find evidence for our theorizing using an analysis of over 35,000 Thingiverse design artifacts. This work identifies the differential effects of different forms of novelty, visual and verbal, on subsequent innovation, and identifies the differential effects of different degrees of structure in the landscape on novelty.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to contribute to the literature on business model (BM) design by deepening the relationship between BM design themes and performance in a sample of firms based in a developing country. In particular, the authors deepen the relationship between business model novelty (BMN), business model efficiency (BME), the trade-off between novelty and efficiency – that the authors call BM ambidexterity – and performance. Design/methodology/approach Data are drawn from a sample of 107 manufacturing and service firms based in a developing country (Albania). Hierarchical regression is used to assess the impact on firm performance from the two BM design themes and their interaction. Findings The authors find novelty-centred BM design is significantly related to firm performance while efficiency-centred design has no direct effect on performance. However, the authors also find that BME positively moderates the relationship between BMN and firm performance. Research limitations/implications The relationship between BM design and firm performance can be better understood if contextualised. In the paper, the authors find that different types of BM designs have different impacts on the performance of firms based in a developing economy. While novelty matters, quite surprisingly the authors find no support for efficiency. Additionally, the authors find the interaction between the two design themes (BM ambidexterity) to have a positive impact on firm performance. Practical implications The surveyed firms based in a developing economy appear to benefit from novelty-centred BM designs. Efficiency-centred designs have a more ambiguous role: while efficiency alone seems not to pay off, an efficient BM design may facilitate the market exploitation of a novel design. Originality/value This study responds to a precise call for additional quantitative empirical studies on the relationship between BM and performance. The study also contributes to an emerging stream of research focused on BM ambidexterity.

Typefaces have become an essential resource used by graphic designs to communicate. Some designers opt to create their own typefaces or custom lettering that better suits each design project. This increases the demand for novelty in type design, and consequently the need for good technological means to explore new thinking and approaches in the design of typefaces. In this work, we continue our research on the automatic evolution of glyphs (letterforms or designs of characters). We present an evolutionary framework for the automatic generation of type stencils based on fitness functions designed by the user. The proposed framework comprises two modules: the evolutionary system, and the fitness function design interface. The first module, the evolutionary system, operates a Genetic Algorithm, with a novelty search mechanism, and the fitness assignment scheme. The second module, the fitness function design interface, enables the users to create fitness functions through a responsive graphical interface, by indicating the desired values and weights of a set of behavioural features, based on machine learning approaches, and morphological features. The experimental results reveal the wide variety of type stencils and glyphs that can be evolved with the presented framework and show how the design of fitness functions influences the outcomes, which are able to convey the preferences expressed by the user. The creative possibilities created with the outcomes of the presented framework are explored by using one evolved stencil in a design project. This research demonstrates how Evolutionary Computation and Machine Learning may address challenges in type design and expand the tools for the creation of typefaces.

Combinatorial designs have many interesting and genuine wide applications in areas including analysis and design of algorithms, cryptography, analysis and design of experiments, storage system design, tournament scheduling, optical communications, and computer networks to mention just a few areas. In this paper, we are concerned with the transversal designs and authentication codes as direct applications of combinatorial designs. The novelty of the current paper is demonstrated by the fact that it is the first to introduce the transversal designs and authentication codes by the mutually orthogonal graph squares (MOGS); we call them graph-transversal designs and graph-authentication codes, respectively. Here, the major contributions are the constructions of graph-transversal designs and graph-authentication codes based on several classes of graphs. Also, we present several results such as path-transversal designs, cycle-transversal designs, and disjoint unions of stars-transversal designs.

An increasing number of scholars and practitioners are advocating for the exploration of the demand-side consequences of business model (BM) design from the customer’s perceptual perspective. Consistent with this view, this paper discusses how BM design can achieve customer loyalty through the mediating role of customer citizenship behavior. Therefore, this paper puts forward a series of hypotheses regarding relationships among BM design, customer citizenship behavior, and customer loyalty and further tests these hypotheses through hierarchical regression analysis from data collected from Chinese customers. The results show that both efficiency-centered and novelty-centered BM designs are the antecedents of customer citizenship behavior and customer loyalty. The results also show that efficiency-centered and novelty-centered BM designs can directly affect customer loyalty, and indirectly affect customer loyalty through the mediating role of customer citizenship behavior. Our findings contribute to research on the relationship between BM design and customer loyalty, and research on the demand-side consequences of BM design. Our findings also contribute to research on the link between BM design and marketing, and research on BM design for corporate sustainability. Our findings have management implications for practitioners as well.

The judge's interpretation of the novelty principle, where the Panel of Judges in industrial design disputes argues that an industrial design can be said to be new if it has undergone a significant change in visual appearance, meaning that the visual appearance of the two objects is very different. If not, then the modification of a product cannot be called new so that it cannot be considered as an industrial design. The problems of this research include: how is the regulation of product novelty in the registration of industrial designs in Law Number 31 of 2000 and how is the legal protection of designers against the concept of novelty of products in the legal system in Indonesia. This type of research used in discussing the problem of this research is normative legal research. The conclusions of this research are as follows: Regulations on Product Newness in the Registration of Industrial Designs in Law Number 31 of 2000, among others, are in Article 9. And legal remedies are contained in Article 54 of Law Number 31 of 2000. Legal protection of designers against the concept of product novelty In the legal system in Indonesia, among others: Preventive protection: This protection is also closely related to the awareness of the owner of the industrial design rights themselves to register their industrial designs in order to get protection from the State. Regressive protection for holders of Industrial Design Rights is protection that is carried out directly to resolve or overcome an event or incident that has occurred in the form of a violation of the right to industrial design.

The origin of evolutionary novelty involves changes across the biological hierarchy: from genes and cells to whole organisms and ecosystems. Understanding the mechanisms behind the establishment of new designs involves integrating scientific disciplines that use different data and, often, different means of testing hypotheses. Discoveries from both paleontology and developmental genetics have shed new light on the origin of morphological novelties. The genes that play a major role in establishing the primary axes of the body and appendages, and that regulate the expression of the genes that are responsible for initiating the making of structures such as eyes, or hearts, are highly conserved between phyla. This implies that it is not new genes, per se, that underlie much of morphological innovation, but that it is changes in when and where these and other genes are expressed that constitute the underlying mechanistic basis of morphological innovation. Gene duplication is also a source of developmental innovation, but it is possible that it is not the increased number of genes (and their subsequent divergence) that is most important in the evolution of new morphologies; rather it may be the duplication of their regulatory regions that provides the raw material for morphological novelty. Bridging the gap between microevolution and macroevolution will involve understanding the mechanisms behind the production of morphological variation. It appears that relatively few genetic changes may be responsible for most of the observed phenotypic differences between species, at least in some instances. In addition, advances in our understanding of the mechanistic basis of animal development offer the opportunity to deepen our insight into the nature of the Cambrian explosion. With the advent of whole-genome sequencing, we should see accelerated progress in understanding the relationship between the genotype, phenotype, and environment: post-genomics paleontology promises to be most exciting.

The primary objective of this paper is to provide an initial impetus to predictability driven design flow. Predictability is the quantified form of accuracy. The novelty lies in defining and using the idea of predictability. In order to illustrate the basic concepts we focus on the power estimation problem in RT-Level designs. Our experiments showed that predictability at RT-Level could be improved by making the resource delay constraints more stringent. This procedure may come with increased power dissipation. We present an optimal pseudo-polynomial time algorithm to optimize predictability while keeping the increase in power dissipation within a budget. We further extend this algorithm to generate an ∊-approximate solution in polynomial time where ∊ is a user defined parameter. The algorithm probably generates solutions that differ at-most ∊C max from the optimal. The future work would include extending the concept of predictability to other levels of design flow and other cost function. We envision a design automation system which does effective tradeoff between predictability and cost hence enabling efficient design exploration.

Objective: This research uses the M-Four theory to investigate how teachers design mathematical tasks based on contextual problems. Method: The research involves a case study approach, utilizing in-depth observations, interviews, and Mathematical Task Design Sheets (MTDS) for data collection. This study involved one Beginner Teacher (BT) (age 35) participating who was selected based on teacher experiences. Through observation results, a BT who consistently assigns contextual math problems is selected for further analysis. Results: The study's findings reveal that BT tends to produce contextual assignments that primarily focus on the context presented in the textbook, with minimal additions or adjustments based on real-life situations experienced by students. This research contributes to the existing literature on problem-based learning and task design by examining the perspectives of BT. It provides insights for teacher professional development programs and curriculum design. Novelty: The novelty of this research lies in its exploration of how BT designs mathematical tasks based on contextual problems using the M-Four theory.

Keywords: registered industrial designs, novelty, individual character, administrativeprocedure, invalidity The new edition of the Law of Ukraine «On the Protection of Rights to Industrial Designs» No. 3770-XII,adopted on October 14, 2020, introduced significant changes to the regulation of thelegal protection of industrial designs. The basic norms of the law were harmonizedwith the articles 212−217 Chapter 9 «Intellectual Property» of the Association Agreementbetween Ukraine, on the one hand, and the European Union, the EuropeanAtomic Energy Community and their Member States, on the other hand. The conceptsof «individual character», «the overall impression», «the informed user» and «thedegree of freedom of the designer», «the circles specializing in the relevant industry»have been introduced into the sphere of legal protection. These concepts were not previouslyused in the legislation of Ukraine. The article analyzes the content of theseconcepts on the basis of European law enforcement practice, Decision of the EuropeanUnion Intellectual Property Office Board of Appeal, Judgment of the Court of Justiceof the European Union и Judgment of the General Court of the European Union. Inaccordance with the new edition of the Law, an industrial design can be declared invalidin an administrative procedure. Authors reviewed the administrative procedure for establishing the conformity of a registered industrial design to the criteria for protection(a novelty and an individual character). A registered industrial design shall beconsidered to be new, if no identical design has been previously disclosed to the publicand to have an individual character if the overall impression it produces on the informeduser differs from the overall impression produced on such a user by any previouslydisclosed design. A design shall be deemed to have been made available to thepublic (i) if it has been published following registration or otherwise, or exhibited, used in trade or otherwise disclosed, (ii) except where these events could not reasonablyhave become known in the normal course of business to the circles specializing inthe relevant industry in Ukraine. Authors analyzed this two-step test. Particular attentionwas paid to the disclosure of industrial designs as a trade mark, copyrightwork, patent, utility model or otherwise on the Internet. Criteria for assessing disclosureof designs on the internet considered.

PurposeInsects can be sustainably produced and are nutrient rich. However, adoption of insects in western culture, including New Zealand (NZ) is slow. The purpose of this paper is to explore consumer attitudes, drivers and barriers towards entomophagy and uncover consumer expectations surrounding what their ideal insect product attributes are.Design/methodology/approachIn total, 32 participants took part in three product design workshops. This involved two sections. First, focus groups discussion took place surrounding consumer acceptance. Second, following adapted consumer idealised design, groups of three or four designed their ideal liquid and solid product incorporating extracted insect protein. Designs included the ideal product, place, price and promotional attributes.FindingsParticipants were both disgusted and intrigued about entomophagy, with common barriers including; culture, food neophobia, disgust sensitivity, lack of necessity and knowledge. Motivational drivers were novelty, health, sustainability and/or nutrition. Most of the liquid and solid food products were designed as a premium priced sweet snack, drink or breakfast option, as opposed to a meat substitute. The convenience, health and sustainability benefits of certain products were promoted towards health and fitness oriented consumers. Whereas, other designs promoted the novelty of insects to kids or the general population, in order to introduce the idea of entomophagy to consumers.Originality/valueThe study is the first attempt at uncovering what insect products NZ consumers are accepting of; therefore, contributing to both limited research and product development opportunities for industry.

A complex network is characterized by community structure, so it is of great theoretical and practical significance to discover hidden functions by detecting the community structure in complex networks. In this paper, a multiobjective brain storm optimization based on novelty search (MOBSO-NS) community detection method is proposed to solve the current issue of premature convergence caused by the loss of diversity in complex network community detection based on multiobjective optimization algorithm and improve the accuracy of community discovery. The proposed method designs a novel search strategy where novelty individuals are first constructed to improve the global search ability, thus avoiding falling into local optimal solutions; then, the objective space is divided into 3 clusters: elite cluster, ordinary cluster, and novel cluster, which are mapped to the decision space, and finally, the populations are disrupted and merged. In addition, the introduction of a restarting strategy is introduced to avoid stagnation by premature convergence. Experimental results show that the algorithm with good global searchability can find the Pareto optimal network community structure set with uniform distribution and high convergence and excavate the network community with higher quality.

The purpose of the study is to develop appropriate algorithms and procedures used in simulating the movement of a model car along adjacent tracks. These algorithms will automate the process of calculating the position of the boundary column between adjacent tracks of different designs with a given accuracy and compliance with traffic safety requirements. Scientific methods. In the course of the study, simulation methods were used to model the movement of the design car along the adjacent tracks. Analytical geometry methods were used to determine the main geometric characteristics of the car in terms of its relative position relative to the track axis. Results. The following conclusions were obtained as a result of the research. The multivariability of the design of adjacent tracks in the plan does not make it possible to create a universal analytical expression for determining the position of the boundary column. Existing methods for calculating the position of the boundary post provide for the maximum spread of the dimension in curved sections, which results in an excessive distance between the boundary post and the switch and inefficient use of the useful track length. The developed algorithms and procedures for determining the position of the boundary column are universal and allow automating the process of calculating the position of the boundary column between adjacent tracks of different designs in the plan, even when technical standards or parameters of the design cars change. In this case, only the initial data for the calculation need to be changed. Scientific novelty. The scientific novelty lies in the development of algorithms and procedures for formalizing the design of adjacent tracks and simulating the movement of design rolling stock on them. Practical significance. The developed algorithms and procedures can be implemented in the form of a software package for automated calculation of the position of the boundary column with high accuracy. Also, the obtained results of calculations can be used in the analysis and creation of an analytical description of the position of the boundary column for complex structures of adjacent tracks.

Designers have no way of establishing, and hence controlling, the likely production consequences of design decisions during the early stages of new product introduction. Aggregate process modelling is a newly developed methodology for the identification and manufacturability assessment of production routeings for partially specified product configurations. The novelty of the proposed approach lies in the close integration of process models with existing product and resource information and the provision of feedback regarding manufacturing issues to control downstream design processes. A description of the methods for early estimation of product manufacturability and their potential application in a design support system, able to prevent the progression of design ideas that would be costly, difficult or even impossible to manufacture, is presented in this paper.

Urban air mobility (UAM) has been suggested as a new method of transportation to solve issues of rising populations and traffic congestion in metropolitan areas. UAM is mostly conceptual, as there is no standardization for the external aesthetic features of a UAM. This study aims to understand how people would perceive and describe the external design of UAM and how specific features of UAM design associate with the descriptor terms and preference by adopting the methods of Kansei Engineering or Measure of Perception. Participants were asked to rate different sample UAM designs using 30 semantic pairs selected to best describe UAM. The factor results on the semantic pairs revealed five descriptor terms including safety, comfort, novelty, simplicity, and its level of advancement. The results also found that participants prefer the sample designs that generate feelings of safety, comfort, and simplicity, with a few advancements. Even though the study is preliminary, the study can be extended to understand users' mental models and apply them to the effective design of UAM in various ways.

Comparative products are very important and must be considered about it because, Industrial Design assesses the performance of products that can be proven from evidence that can be seen or assessed by clear eye such as photographic evidence, catalogs or other evidence that can be proved bye Industrial Design which has existed before. Industrial design is based on its external appearance which does not have an aesthetic impression and contradicts Article 1 point 1 of the Industrial Design Law and article 25 Paragraph 1 of the TRIPs agreement, which is form creation, solely for function or technical configuration. Aesthetically cannot be registered. In the absence of aesthetic elements, the product performance can be used as the basis for the absence of new industrial designs based on the principle of "Public Domain", considering the aesthetic elements are one of the requirements of an item that can be categorized as Industrial Design. In the other hand, the protection period has expired and became a "Public Domain" then it can be registered as an Industrial Design if it packed with an aesthetic elements. If an item does not have an aesthetic impression, it can be ascertained that the item is not an industrial design and can be possible not to have novelty and become public property. Aesthetic impressions do not contradict with the laws and regulations, but this is an important requirement so the design can be categorized as an industrial design. In ordinance No. 31 in 2000 concerning Industrial Design itself does not limit of the notion novelty and aesthetics so, the multiple interpretations are often occur.

Abstract—Currently, an academic system with structured data is needed for all lecture institutions, especially universities in Indonesia, Siliwangi University, with its academic system, namely the Campus Academic Information System (SIMAK). Over time, complaints from the visual aspect and user experience that did not keep up with the times became a new problem for SIMAK with student access rights. Therefore, the UI/UX aspect in developing an application is vital in accessing the available features. In this study, the method applied is Design Thinking to develop SIMAK WEB and SIMAK MOBILE application designs according to the data and input obtained from users. The research stages include Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype, and Test. The final result is user testing from expert users with ten examiners, each producing a success rate percentage of 100% for SIMAK WEB and a percentage of 90% for SIMAK MOBILE. In addition, the User Experience Questionnaire (UEQ) assessment from the same expert user plus end-users of 39 respondents and 33 respondents for web and mobile respectively increased 6 UEQ scales, namely Attractiveness, Clarity, Efficiency, Accuracy, Stimulation and lastly especially Novelty which has an increase of 5.286 and 5.264 from the initial value of -0.880. The Novelty scale is the only scale with a negative impression initially and was successfully evaluated in this study with a good score. The implication for further research is that an in-depth study and application of unique methods regarding the conversion of designs into prototype form is necessary so that coding can run smoothly. A formidable challenge for global change biologists is to predict how natural populations will respond to the emergence of conditions not observed at present, termed novel climates. Popular approaches to predict population vulnerability are based on the expected degree of novelty relative to the amplitude of historical climate fluctuations experienced by a population. Here, we argue that predictions focused on amplitude may be inaccurate because they ignore the predictability of environmental fluctuations in driving patterns of evolution and responses to climate change. To address this disconnect, we review major findings of evolutionary theory demonstrating the conditions under which phenotypic plasticity is likely to evolve in natural populations, and how plasticity decreases population vulnerability to novel environments. We outline key criteria that experimental studies should aim for to effectively test theoretical predictions, while controlling for the degree of climate novelty. We show that such targeted tests of evolutionary theory are rare, with marine systems being overall underrepresented in this venture despite exhibiting unique opportunities to test theory. We conclude that with more robust experimental designs that manipulate both the amplitude and predictability of fluctuations, while controlling for the degree of novelty, we may better predict population vulnerability to climate change.

<span>Quantum-dot cellular automata (QCA) gained a notable attraction in the emerging nanotechnology to get the better of power consumption, density, nano-scale design, the performance of the present CMOS technology. Many designs had been proposed in QCA for an arithmetic circuit like adder, divider, parity checker and comparator etc. Most of the designs have been facing the challenges of cost efficiency, power dissi-pation, device density etc. However, consideration of design automation, underlying clocking layout and integration of the sub modules are the most important which has a direct impact on the fabrication of the design. This work proposed a novel cost ef-fective and power aware comparator design, which is an essential segment in central processing unit (CPU). The noticeable novelty of the design was the use of underlying regular clocking scheme. A new scalable, regular clocking scheme has been utilized in the coplanar design of the comparator which enables regular or uniform cell layout of QCA circuit. It also exhibited the significant improvement over existing counterparts having irregular clocking in terms of area and latency. QCADesigner was used to test and verify the functionality of the circuit and by using QCAPro the power dissipation has been analyzed.</span>

In recent years, the development of new satellites has accelerated, especially for small satellites like university-class Cubesats, due to low design and manufacturing costs. The preliminary design of these spacecraft requires the utilization of new tools that improve the interrelation among the different subsystems and optimize the design. One of the most suitable approaches is the concurrent design facility, which connects specialists of each subsystem in the same room to facilitate the communication among them. This method provides different preliminary designs for the complete system by an iterative process in a reduced time, taking into account the simultaneity with the designs of the subsystems. One of the main subsystems of a spacecraft is the propulsion system, which plays a key role in the success of a mission by allowing the spacecraft to reach the final destination. Electric propulsion has become an interesting option due to the high value of the specific impulse, which provides the necessary velocity increment with a lower propellant mass compared to the traditional chemical rockets. The purpose of this paper is to present the equations implemented in the propulsion module of the concurrent design facility to obtain optimum designs of ion thrusters, which supposes a novelty compared to the traditional design approach of these systems, where there is no interaction with the design of the rest of subsystems. The objective is to help the designer to select the best options in a fast and easy way and improve the efficiency of the iterative work of the concurrent design facility.

Although the idea of linking a shape grammar to a genetic algorithm is not new, this paper proposes a novel way of combining these two elements in order to provide a tool that can be used for design exploration. Using a shape grammar for design generation provides a way of creating a range of potential solutions to a design problem which fit with the designer's stylistic agenda. A genetic algorithm can then be used to take these designs and develop them into a much richer set of solutions which can still be recognised as part of the same family. By setting quantifiable targets for design performance, the genetic algorithm can evolve new designs which exhibit the best features of previous generations. The designer is then presented with a wide range of high scoring solutions and can choose which of these to take forward and develop in the conventional manner. The novelty of the proposed approach is in the use of a shape code, which describes the steps that the shape grammar has taken to create each design. The genetic algorithm works on this shape code by applying crossover and mutation in order to create a range of designs that can be tested. The fittest are then selected in order to provide the genetic material for the next generation. A prototype version of such a program, called Shape Evolution, has been developed. In order to test Shape Evolution it has been used to design a range of apartment buildings which are required to meet certain performance criteria.

The paper reports the consideration of transport machines propeller creation for their motion on land, on water and under water at high speed, with greater load carrying capacity and low energy consumption. The increase of technological potentialities, speed and load carrying capacity of transport machines is achieved by means of manufacturing a propeller as a helical jacket with the possibility of drive shaft rotation. Such propellers are called helical by us, as around their perimeter along the entire length there are formed multistart helical curved surfaces like helical grooves of different forms and dimensions. As a result of the work carried out the designs of helical propellers are offered which novelty is confirmed by patents for invention and their classification in which is a general principle allowing the development of still unknown designs of helical propellers. The original design search of helical propellers was carried out by the methods of descriptive geometry and engineering graphics which allowed forming them around the perimeter with curvilinear or flat elements with overlaps or without them and also with the aid of “Compass-3D” program complex. The technologies and designs of helical propellers ensuring high speed of transport machine mo-tion on land, on water and under water are offered.

Methods: In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover study, 24 healthy volunteers received 50 μg of LSD or inactive placebo. Near drug peak, a creativity task battery was applied, including pattern meaning task (PMT), alternate uses task (AUT), picture concept task (PCT), creative metaphors task (MET) and figural creativity task (FIG). Creativity was assessed by scoring creativity criteria (novelty, utility, surprise), calculating divergent thinking (fluency, originality, flexibility, elaboration) and convergent thinking, computing semantic distances (semantic spread, semantic steps) and searching for data-driven special features. Results: LSD, compared to placebo, changed several creativity measurements pointing to three overall LSD-induced phenomena: (1) ‘pattern break’, reflected by increased novelty, surprise, originality and semantic distances; (2) decreased ‘organization’, reflected by decreased utility, convergent thinking and, marginally, elaboration; and (3) ‘meaning’, reflected by increased symbolic thinking and ambiguity in the data-driven results. Conclusion: LSD changed creativity across modalities and measurement approaches. Three phenomena of pattern break, disorganization and meaning seemed to fundamentally influence creative cognition and behaviour pointing to a shift of cognitive resources ‘away from normal’ and ‘towards the new’. LSD-induced symbolic thinking might provide a tool to support treatment efficiency in psychedelic-assisted therapy.

The increasing number of data breaches has led many organizations to focus on securing their IT infrastructures and application architectures. However, the main causes of many of the latest attacks are not associated with these two architectures. The damage caused by most of the recent attacks could have been minimized if more attention was given to enhancing the security of all components of the database architecture. The existing enterprise database architecture frameworks do not consider this issue a priority; hence, it has received minimal attention. The enterprise database architecture is the most important architecture because it is responsible for defining how all types of data, whether security-critical or not, are stored and accessed. This paper focuses on addressing the lack of a complete solution to help enterprise system architects to address the security of their organizations from early stages. The novelty of this approach is that it specifies how to modify the required artifacts by the enterprise database architecture to address security-critical data. The approach also defines a number of security measurements that help enterprise architects in measuring the security of the organization database based on those artifacts. These metrics are developed based on the results of a cybersecurity experiment conducted on 100 randomly selected open-source websites. The paper's contributions also consist of the definition of a number of security refactoring rules that specify how to modify current enterprise databases to make them more secure. This paper uses an existing relational diagram for a health clinic database to illustrate the application of the model to an existing database. The validity and applicability of these metrics and refactoring rules are proved using an experiment conducted on a number of security-related databases.

The potential for enhanced seakeeping and increased operational effectiveness for certain missions has generated an interest by the U.S. Navy in small-waterplane-area twin-hull (SWATH) ships. Because of the novelty of these vessels, traditional design approaches cannot be used. Hence, the David Taylor Research Center has invested a considerable effort to develop suitable criteria for primary Ioadings, secondary Ioadings, and the structural response of these ships. This paper presents an approach for determining the maximum seaway Ioadings on SWATH ships and summarizes the results in simple design algorithms. Secondary slam Ioadings from model tests are presented. Algorithms for predicting the stress distributions on primary structure are also presented. Finally, some lightweight alternatives to conventional steel grillage secondary structure are presented. Overall, structural weight reductions are possible, with the biggest potential benefits arising from structural designs which resist secondary loads.

ABSTRACT We use a field research design to examine management control systems in creative teams working in fashion firms. The study is structured as an in-depth case study followed by five additional cases. We find management control systems to be deeply embedded in the work environment of creative teams. They are designed to define, negotiate, and legitimize the designs that emerge from the creation process. We identify a set of systems (directional) that define the creative space of design teams and that work as interfaces with the rest of the company. We also find a set of systems (inspirational) that guide the creative process to enhance novelty and provide a common vision to support consistency across the overall collection of products designed. In addition, our analysis documents how firms following different strategies—fine fashion versus mass market—design these systems differently to adapt their creative process to their strategic demands.

Background The wide availability of internet-connected devices and new sensor technologies increasingly infuse longitudinal observational study designs and cohort studies. Simultaneously, the costly and time-consuming nature of traditional cohorts has given rise to alternative, technology-driven designs such as eCohorts, which remain inadequately described in the scientific literature. Objective The aim of this study was to outline and discuss what may constitute an eCohort, as well as to formulate a first working definition for health researchers based on a review of the relevant literature. Methods A two-staged review and synthesis process was performed comparing 10 traditional cohorts and 10 eCohorts across the six core steps in the life cycle of cohort designs. Results eCohorts are a novel type of technology-driven cohort study that are not physically linked to a clinical setting, follow more relaxed and not necessarily random sampling procedures, are primarily based on self-reported and digitally collected data, and systematically aim to leverage the internet and digitalization to achieve flexibility, interactivity, patient-centeredness, and scalability. This approach comes with some hurdles such as data quality, generalizability, and privacy concerns. Conclusions eCohorts have similarities to their traditional counterparts; however, they are sufficiently distinct to be treated as a separate type of cohort design. The novelty of eCohorts is associated with a range of strengths and weaknesses that require further exploration.

Streszczenie:
The industrial design protection system in Indonesia uses registration requirements, without registration, there is no protection. This is in contrast to the UK’s existing industrial design protection system, where the UK implements two protection systems, namely the registered design right or unregistered design right. This unregistered protection system is used in products that do not last long on the market such as fashion products and as an alternative for companies to test design prospects on the market. Unregistered protection systems are also used as design protection alternatives to prevent copying or plagiarizing of designs that do not yet have registration numbers. This article will discuss the following issues: 1) The legal protection of Korean pop idol clothing designs is reviewed based on Indonesian and English laws; and 2) The urgency of legal novelty in the industrial design law in Indonesia. In this study, the legal research method used is normative legal research with an approach through statutory regulations, a conceptual approach, and a comparative approach. The legal materials used are primary legal materials and secondary legal materials. The conclusion is that the industrial design protection system in Indonesia still has to go through the registration process, this is irrelevant to products or goods that cannot last long in the market because trends change easily. This is different from that in the UK where it implements an unregistered design right system where industrial design rights are obtained automatically.

Streszczenie:
Technology-enhanced learning continues to provide opportunities for increased interventions in educational programing. For teacher education programs, novelty pales in comparison to providing meaningful instruction and enduring outcomes. The use of avatars has provided integration of research evidence that increases intended behaviors; however, research is lacking on teacher self-efficacy change via an avatar experience. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between teacher self-efficacy and avatar use in a teacher education program. A relational study using both parametric and non-parametric designs for four different samples indicated a significant relationship between avatar intervention and teacher self-efficacy in classroom management, instructional strategies, and student engagement. The sample from a student teaching course, which had a limited number of participants, provided mixed results. More studies need to include experimental designs and isolation of variabilities in the avatar model.

Streszczenie:
Researchers employ foot-mounted inertial measurement units (IMUs) to estimate the three-dimensional trajectory of the feet as well as a rich array of gait parameters. However, the accuracy of those estimates depends critically on the limitations of the accelerometers and angular velocity gyros embedded in the IMU design. In this study, we reveal the effects of accelerometer range, gyro range, and sampling frequency on gait parameters (e.g., distance traveled, stride length, and stride angle) estimated using the zero-velocity update (ZUPT) method. The novelty and contribution of this work are that it: (1) quantifies these effects at mean speeds commensurate with competitive distance running (up to 6.4 m/s); (2) identifies the root causes of inaccurate foot trajectory estimates obtained from the ZUPT method; and (3) offers important engineering recommendations for selecting accurate IMUs for studying human running. The results demonstrate that the accuracy of the estimated gait parameters generally degrades with increased mean running speed and with decreased accelerometer range, gyro range, and sampling frequency. In particular, the saturation of the accelerometer and/or gyro induced during running for some IMU designs may render those designs highly inaccurate for estimating gait parameters.
