The author of the article analyses Jacek Dukaj’s science fiction novella The Cathedral (2000), which inspired the famous animated short film released under the same title in 2002. The eponymous pseudo-building was founded on the grave of Izmir Predú, a man who has sacrificed himself to save his travel companions’ lives. It is built using programmed nanoparticles and has formed itself – chaotically – into a cathedral-like asymmetrical, fractal structure. The novella’s main character, a Catholic priest, has been sent onto a planetoid to validate rumours about Predú’s holiness. The author of the article argues that the process of incarnating the protagonist into the Cathedral’s body leads him to the point of holistic transformation of the body, psyche and knowledge, similar to technological singularity, which is indistinguishable from a mystical, religious act. It is limited to earthly life, though, and brings the risk (as a transhuman act) of losing humanity. Jacek Dukaj offers the reader a few clues, but they are inconclusive. The reader’s interpretative hesitance therefore mirrors the protagonist’s ambiguous transformation. There is no reason to name the novella a religious one, although transhuman messianism plays an important role in it.

This paper discusses how Liu Cixin’s 2000 novella “The Wandering Earth” was adapted into a family melodrama that ultimately reinforces the authority of the Father and the nation-state. It analyzes the complex mechanisms, such as mise en abyme and scapegoating, that serve to condone the patriarch’s power, as well as the intertextuality tying the film to the socialist culture. This paper analyses the social context that foregrounds the conversion from symbolic patricide (breaking the established system) to symbolic patrilineality (integration into the social order) in the film and also discusses the inherent tension between the radical apocalyptic vision offered in the original science fiction story and the cultural industry serving the interests of the established order.

AbstractThis article provides some groundwork for applying the cognitive linguistic theory of force dynamics (Talmy 1988, 2000) to narrative discourse. It proposes that Talmy's analytic apparatus is suitable for revealing character-related dynamics in literature, especially by exploiting the previously unnoticed convergence with the notion of actancy proposed by the narratologist Greimas (1966). Force imagery both in ordinary action descriptions and in metaphor opens a vista on how readers infer, stabilize, and elaborate narrative macro-representations of “who wants what” and “who does what to whom?” Hence, texts subtly encode aspects of higher-level story logic through forces, enabling readers (and scholars) to detect and scale up coherence patterns that shed light on character motives, protagonist interaction, and plot dynamics. A full-scale text linguistic analysis is proposed. My case study of about 500 text units found in Joseph Sheridan LeFanu's novella Carmilla (1872) reveals a dynamic web of driving, penetrating, manipulating, attracting, and erupting forces between the two main protagonists, a beautiful girl vampire and her 19 year-old victim.

No Hebrew reader, at least no reader with some Hebraic literacy, would be able to ignore the strong national resonance of the biblical phrases that Amalia Kahana-Carmon—one of Israel's foremost writers, the recipient of the 2000 Israel Prize—inserted into the masterful opening of the title novella of her 1984 triptych, Up on Montifer. Indeed, the evocative power of these intertexts is inescapable. “עAm levadad yishkon,” a verbatim quote from Balaam's prophecy (Numbers 23:9), is one of the sources for the construction of the Israelite and Jewish national identity, connoting uniqueness, exclusivity, and chosenness. The slightly veiled phrases “עover(et) lifnei hamaḥaneh” and “hanshei ḥalutz kovshim” add allusions to the foundational myth of the conquest of Canaan. In fact, they invoke the story of the tribes Gad and Reuben (Numbers 32), whose role as vanguard, crossing the Jordan before the rest of the Israelites (actually, “before the Lord,” as the biblical text insists), no doubt stands behind the modern Zionist use of the biblical term ḥalutz (vanguard) as “pioneer.”

Prominent examples of major Qur'anic characters in modern world literature include Joseph (and Zulaykha) -like characters in the 1984 Arabic novel, al-Rahīna (The Hostage) by the Yemeni writer Zayd Muṭīʿ Dammāj (d. 2000) and the fictionalised portrayal of the women around the Prophet Muḥammad in Algerian filmmaker and novelist Assia Djebar's 1991 French novel, Loin de Médine (Far from Medina). In this article I focus, rather, on a ‘minor’ Qur'anic character, al-Khiḍr (cf. Q. 18:65–82). I begin by looking briefly at the evolution of al-Khiḍr in Islamic literatures generally and then focus on his deployment in several short fictional accounts, viz. the 1995 French novella L'homme du livre (Muhammad, A Novel) by Moroccan author Driss Chraïbi (d. 2007); Victor Pelevin's 1994 Russian short story, ‘Prints Gosplana’ (Prince of Gosplan); the 1998 short story, ‘The Mapmakers of Spitalfields’, by Bangladeshi-British writer Manzu Islam; and Reza Daneshvar's 2004 Persian tale, ‘Mahboobeh va-Āl’ (‘Mahboobeh and Ahl’). I characterise the ways in which these modern authors draw on the al-Khiḍr type, persona, and legend, and go on to suggest how and why the use of al-Khiḍr in modern literature is productive and versatile.

Se ofrece una aproximación al estudio del cierre en la novela marroquí moderna en lengua árabe entre los años 1930 y 2000. Con base en los estudios de Marco Kunz sobre la novela en lengua española, se examinan los segmentos finales de 126 novelas marroquíes, de los que se extraen los recursos terminativos más decisivos y se propone una tipología. Tradicionalmente, el estudio del final en la narrativa se ha centrado en el desenlace como resolución de las tensiones argumentales y como elemento que completa el sentido global del texto; sin embargo, desenlace y cierre no suelen coincidir. El examen detallado de los cierres de las novelas en su serie histórica permitiría poner de relieve la evolución de ciertas tendencias formales durante el desarrollo del género en Marruecos.

The idea of the article was suggested by Lotman’s theory about two basic mechanisms of social behaviour — fear and shame. The presented paper aims at highlighting two other mechanisms of such kind — guilt and repentance. The novella Isaac (1960–61) by Antanas Škėma, the Lithuanian writer in exile, is about a Lithuanian patriot who kills a Jew called Isaac during the years of German occupation. The author’s fundamental conception implies that the real perpetrator of crime is not a separate individual but the crowd representing the values of the society. Škėma’s interpretation of history demystifies the moral system in the inter-war Lithuania and proves it to be a collection of futile signs that fail to prevent society from falling into mass psychosis and following primitive impulses. The other Lithuanian novel, Leonardas Gutauskas’ Šešėliai (Shadows) written in 2000, focuses on the tense relationships between Lithuanians and Russians, suggesting that there are several moral systems determining the concepts of guilt-repentance. The Christian agricultural society embodies the ethics of individual responsibility. The domination of the Russian ethic code is associated with the separation of Churches and the strengthening of the Orthodox Church. A moral system based on harmony and aiming to reconcile the guilty and the innocent comes across as a sought ideal. Both novels discussed exemplify different modes of a liberating society. The first one is an account of the society’s effort to become free of the guilt complex and rethink its history. The second one articulates the guilt of the Russian nation against Lithuanians and fights russophobia at the same time.

El presente artículo estudia la novela española con temática guerracivilista publicada desde el año 2000 con una doble finalidad: evidenciar el tratamiento literario y escasez cuantitativa de novelas en que el soldado miembro del bando sublevado tiene una importancia constitutiva —tanto en protagonismo como en profundidad del personaje— y señalar los retos ético-políticos a que se enfrenta el tratamiento de su perspectiva: el riesgo de empatía e identificación con el victimario, la superación de esquemas reduccionistas y la posibilidad de refrendar ideas antidemocráticas. Con esto se pretende contribuir al estudio de la novela reciente española y específicamente de una de sus vetas más productivas, el tratamiento literario de la guerra civil española.

La corruption est l’un des problèmes les plus dévastateurs de la Colombie, car elle touche la dimension sociale, politique et éthique. Ce problème est représenté par des pratiques symboliques qui remettent en question la nature de la culture colombienne et son changement. Le roman policier est l’une de ces formes de représentation. Mais l'histoire verbale est recréée, adaptée ou réécrite par des films colombiens qui récupèrent les images et imaginaires déjà présents dans le texte verbal sur le fond de l’univers culturel. Dans cet ordre d’idées, la question qui a guidé la recherche est : quels sont les imaginaires et les images de la corruption dans les romans Perder es cuestión de método, de Santiago Gamboa, Satanás, de Mario Mendoza et Paraíso Travel, de Jorge Franco et dans les films homonymes de Sergio Cabrera, Andi Baiz et Simon Brand ? Pour en répondre, la recherche développe cette question en trois sections : la première porte sur le contexte socioculturel colombien recréé et réinterprété dans ces romans et films ; la seconde concerne les dimensions sociales, psychologiques et physiologiques des imaginaires de la corruption et des images qui constituent ces imaginaires, et la troisième est centrée sur le processus de réécriture des textes en textes filmiques
Corruption is one of the most devastating problems in Colombia because it affects the social, political and ethical dimensions. This problem is represented through symbolic prac-tices that question the nature of Colombian culture and its change. The crime novel is one of these forms of representation. But the verbal story is recreated, adapted or rewritten by Colombian films. Those recover the images and imaginary in the background of the cultural universe. The question that guided the research is: What are the imaginary and images of corrup-tion in the novels Perder es cuestión de metodo, by Santiago Gamboa, Satanás, by Mario Mendoza and Paraíso Travel, by Jorge Franco and in the homonymous films by Sergio Cabrera, Andi Baiz and Simon Brand? To answer this question, the research develops three sections. The first deals with the Colombian socio-cultural context recreated and reinterpreted in these novels and films; the second concerns the social, psychological and physiological dimensions of the imaginary and the images of corruption, and the third focuses on the process of rewriting verbal texts into film texts. We adopt a semiotic approach, both theoretical and methodological, because literary and film practices correspond to two different modes of production and to two languages each having its own characteristics. The analyses show that if the text statements on corrup-tion and evaluations differ in the form of the expression they share the contents

À partir d’un corpus constitué de neuf romans mexicains publiés entre 2000 et 2010 par Guillermo Arreola, Mario Bellatin, Patricia Laurent Kullick, Guadalupe Nettel, Cristina Rivera Garza et Jorge Volpi, ce travail explore les spécificités et les convergences de l’écriture fictionnelle à la première personne à l’aube du XXIe siècle. Qu’il s’agisse de récits ouvertement romanesques, prétendument autobiographiques ou autofictionnels, ils s’éloignent tous du modèle canonique de l’autobiographie et transgressent la frontière entre le référentiel et la fiction. Cette thèse cherche à mettre en évidence les caractéristiques les plus significatives de ces écritures qui accordent une large place à l’introspection, que le je narrateur se livre à l’exercice mémoriel de la convocation de souvenirs d’enfance ou qu’il s’interroge sur son identité et sa relation au monde et à l’altérité. Dans quelle mesure ces romans reflètent-ils les questionnements et les inquiétudes contemporaines sur l’écriture du je ? Quels regards, concordants ou divergents, posent-ils sur le sujet lorsque celui-ci est au centre de l’énonciation et de l’univers narratif ?Dans un premier temps, ce travail propose une partie rétrospective qui s’attache à rappeler les écueils et les principales évolutions qu’ont connus les écritures du je depuis l’avènement de l’autobiographie traditionnelle basée sur le modèle rousseauiste. L’époque contemporaine s’emploie à trouver des alternatives à ce modèle canonique, au point d’abandonner bien souvent l’exigence d’authenticité référentielle.La seconde partie s’attache en effet à observer les nombreuses failles de la mémoire des différents narrateurs. Il en résulte une absence de pacte autobiographique au profit de textes qui revendiquent la place capitale de l’invention dans l’écriture de soi. L’opposition entre fiction et authenticité se fissure : l’activité mémorielle passe en partie par une (ré)invention de soi et, ce faisant, n’en est que plus « authentique ».Il apparaît également une récurrence du thème du double en tant qu’alter ego intérieur, lorsque les narrateurs subissent métamorphoses ou dédoublements. Ce devenir autre est parfois synonyme de dissolution menaçante du sujet ou signe, au contraire, d’une revendication de sa nature changeante, évolutive et inconstante, essentiellement schizo.Enfin, ce travail s’intéresse au rôle déterminant de l’altérité à la fois dans le processus de construction identitaire subjective et dans sa mise en récit. Le je se configure à travers les rapports qu’il tisse avec l’autre. Cela vaut tant pour les protagonistes que pour les romans, qui étendent les pratiques introspectives et autoréflexives au texte lui-même, faisant la part belle à la métatextualité et à la transtextualité.À travers l’étude de la thématique introspective, cette thèse s’interroge en somme sur le regard que posent ces représentants de la jeune génération de la littérature mexicaine sur la place du sujet dans un monde désenchanté ou désarticulé, et sur les possibilités de renouveau de l’écriture créative
Based on a corpus that includes nine Mexican novels, published between 2000 and 2010 by Guillermo Arreola, Mario Bellatin, Patricia Laurent Kullick, Guadalupe Nettel, Cristina Rivera Garza and Jorge Volpi, this work investigates the specificities and convergences of fictional writing in first person at the beginning of the 21st century. Whether the tales happen to be frankly fictional, supposedly autobiographical or autofictional, they all get away from the canonical example of autobiography and they infringe the border between authenticity and fiction. This thesis seeks to evidence the most significant characteristics of these writings which grant much importance to introspection, when the first-person narrator seeks into childhood memories or wonders about the own identity and relationship towards the around world and alterity. How do these novels reflect the contemporary concerns about the writing of the self? Which converging or diverging looks do they take at the self, as it is the main figure of narrative enunciation and universe?This work opens with a retrospective chapter about the main changes and pitfalls that the self-narratives have encountered since the success of traditional autobiography, based on Rousseau’s example. The past decades have been looking for alternatives to this canonical example and many writers often get away from the absolute requirement of authenticity.The second part endeavours to observe the many breaches in the narrators’ memory. In result, the autobiographical pact disappears in favour of texts which claim the prime importance of invention in the self-writing. Opposition between fiction and authenticity seems to be cracking apart: memorial activity includes a process of self-(re)invention which does not make it less “real”, quite the opposite.It is also clear that the topic of the double as an inside alter ego is recurrent, when the narrators go through metamorphosis and split personalities. This becoming other may be a synonym of a threatening dissolution of the self or, on the contrary, a sign of a claim of its changing, inconstant and essentially schizo nature.Finally, this work focuses on the determining role of alterity both in the process of identity and subjective construction, and in the story of it. The self gets to build itself up through the relationships with otherness. This stands both for the characters and for the novels, in which the introspective and auto-reflexive practices extend to the text itself, meaning a solid presence of metatextuality and transtextuality.By studying the introspective topic, this thesis actually wonders about the look these young Mexican writers take at the place of the self in a disillusioned or dislocated world, and at the possibilities of a renewal for the creative writing

La presente investigación aborda la novela de fin de siglo XX en Colombia entre 1990 y 2005 desde una orientación panorámica. El estudio se plantea desde el punto de vista de la escritura y se elabora a través del análisis de algunas novelas del periodo a partir de los conceptos mundo, autor, fragmento. Para ello se centra en las novelas Rosario Tijeras de Jorge Franco, Entre fantasmas de Fernando Vallejo, y Pavana del ángel de Roberto Burgos Cantor. Así las cosas el estudio presenta tres capítulos centrales. En la introducción se explica el propósito de la investigación. El primer capítulo trabaja el concepto de mundaneidad en la obra de Rosario Tijeras de Jorge Franco, dialogando con la novela Después de todo de Piedad Bonnett y El anarquista jubilado de Roberto Rubiano. El segundo capítulo intenta delimitar el concepto de autor y la forma como se configura en Entre fantasmas de Fernando Vallejo, para ello se pone en diálogo con Asuntos de un hidalgo disoluto de Héctor Abad Faciolince, Amirbar de Álvaro Mutis, Érase una vez el amor pero tuve que matarlo de Efraim Medina Reyes y Vida feliz de un joven llamado Esteban de Santiago Gamboa. El tercer capítulo analiza el modo como se presenta el fragmento en la novela Pavana del ángel de Roberto Burgos Cantor, novela que se inscribe en la tradición literaria de Colombia y, en particular, del Caribe colombiano. Dicha novela se pone en relación con la novela Opio en las nubes de Rafael Chaparro Madiedo y se relaciona también con la novela Los cuadernos de N. de Nicolás Suescún. Finalmente, en las conclusiones se busca fijar las líneas generales del camino que se ha seguido en esta investigación.
This research studies the romance on the end of the twentieth century in Colombia between 1990 and 2005 in a panoramic orientation. The analysis is approached from the point of view of writing and is made through the analysis of some novels of the period from the concepts of world, author and fragment. This research, also, is focused on the novels Rosario Tijeras by Jorge Franco, Entre fantamas by Fernando Vallejo and Pavana del angel by Roberto Burgos Cantor. On this way, the study presents three chapters; the introduction presents the purpose of the research and its explanation. The second chapter attempts to define the concept of author and how it is configured in Entre fantasmas by Fernando Vallejo, for that purpose, it is brought into dialogue with Memorias de un hidalgo disoluto by Héctor Abad Faciolince, Amirbar by Alvaro Mutis, Érase una vez el amor pero tuve que matarlo by Efraim Medina Reyes and Vida feliz de un joven llamado Esteban by Santiago Gamboa. The third chapter discusses how the fragment is presented in Pavana del ángel by Roberto Burgos Cantor, a novel that is part of the literary tradition of Colombia and in particular, the Colombian Caribbean. This novel is set in relation to the novel Opio en las nubes by Rafael Chaparro Madiedo and also relates to the romance Los cuadernos de N., by Nicolás Suescún. The conclusion tries to define the way this research was developed.

As obras dos autores Bernardo Carvalho e Francisco José Viegas, inscritos no início do século XXI, permitem verificar como a ficção da era atual suplanta a crise da narrativa e inscreve-se como elemento de resistência. Com base nas teorias de Walter Benjamim, Theodor Adorno, Zygmunt Bauman e Andreas Huyssen - acerca do declínio da narrativa e do romance aliadas a questões de deslocamento, memória e identidade procuramos demonstrar que essa ficção responde a um momento de crise e de transição. Assim, a ficção dos autores investigados representa não a crise do romance, antes configurase como romance da crise, justamente por encontrar nas questões conflitantes (transgressão narrativa, deslocamento espacial, diluição da memória e identidades fluídas) os muros para a construção de seu labirinto ficcional.
This thesis investigates how the contemporary fiction of Portuguese language meets possibilities of resistance to the crisis of the romance that has established in the contemporaneity. The titles of the authors Bernardo Carvalho and Francisco José Viegas, registered in the beginning of the 21st century, allow examining how the fiction from the current era supplants the narrative crisis and inscribes itself as a resistance element. Based in the theories of Walter Benjamim, Theodor Adorno, Zygmunt Bauman and Andreas Huyssen about the decline of the narrative and the romance allied to questions of displacement, memory and identity we try to demonstrate that this fiction responds to a moment of crisis and transition. Thus, the fiction of the authors investigated represents not the crisis of the romance, before, it configures itself as romance of the crisis, justly for meeting in the conflicting questions (narrative transgression, spatial displacement, dilution of the memory and fluid identities) the walls for the construction of its fictional labyrinth.

Yiyun Li, b. 1972, moved from Beijing to the US in 1996, where she soon realized to be a talented writer. Although her early works, including the collections of short stories A Thousand Years of Good Prayers (2005) and Gold Boy, Emerald Girl (2010), and the novels The Vagrants (2009) and Kinder Than Solitude (2014), still privileged Chinese settings and characters, after the publication of her memoir Dear Friend, from My Life I Write to You in Your Life (2017) the literary landscape depicted by Li was amplified with autobiographical anecdotes and reflections on literature, human relations and language. Building upon psychoanalytical hints, this article offers a close reading of Where Reasons End (2019) and Must I Go (2020), reflecting on Li’s literature from a global perspective, and arguing that her contribution to world literature lies in her bold dissociation from any conventional, crystallized and thus imprisoning use of language.

This paper extends our previous study of you was and you were in eighteenth-century English drama, examining trends following Robert Lowth’s proscription of you was in his grammar (1762) and complementing Tieken-Boon van Ostade’s (2002) and Laitinen’s (2009) studies of different genres. Comparing close readings of plays by four female playwrights to the same writers’ novels, we find you was used increasingly after 1762 to indicate negative emotion and moments of dramatic significance, not unlike contemporary theatrical thou (Nonomiya 2021). Qualitatively, we confirm that you was had specifically theatrical functions, signalling deception and provocation (often by younger characters) and loss of control (often by older characters). We identify these disparate but recurrent meanings and personae with Eckert’s (2008) concept of the indexical field.

Considered repositories of objects(Cuno 2009), museums have been analysed through the object-oriented policies they mainly focus on. Three main purposes are often mentioned: preservation, dissemination of knowledge and access to tradition. Beyond these informative and cultural-laden functions, museums have also been labeled as theatres of power, the emphasis lying on nation-oriented policies. According to Michael F. Brown (2009: 148), the outcome of this moral standing of the nation-state is a mobilizing public sentiment in favour of the state power. We consider that the constant flow of national and international exhibitions or events that could be hosted in museums has a twofold consequence: on the one hand, a cultural dynamics due to the permanent contact with unknown objects, and on the other hand, some visibility strategies in order to attract visitors. This latter effect actually embodies a shift within the perception of museums from entities of knowledge towards leisure environments. Within this context where the concept of edutainment(Eschach 2007) seems to prevail in the non-formal way of acquiring new knowledge, contemporary virtual museums display visual information without regard to geographic location (Dahmen, Sarraf, 2009). They play ?a central role in making culture accessible to the mass audience(Carrazzino, Bergamasco 2010) by using new technologies and novel interaction paradigms. Our study will aim at analyzing the way in which civilization was e-framed in the virtual project ?A History of the World in 100 Objects, run by BBC Radio 4 and the British Museum in 2010. The British Museum won the 2011 Art Fund Prize for this innovative platform whose main content was created by the contributors (the museums and the members of the public). The chairman of the panel of judges, Michael Portillo, noted that the judges were impressed that the project used digital media in ground-breaking and novel ways to interact with audiences. The two theoretical frameworks used in our analysis are framing theories and critical discourse analysis. ?Schemata of interpretation? (Goffman 1974), frames are used by individuals to make sense of information or an occurrence, providing principles for the organization of social reality? (Hertog & McLeod 2001). Considered cultural structures with central ideas and more peripheral concepts and a set of relations that vary in strength and kind among them? (Hertog, McLeod 2001, p.141), frames rely on the selection of some aspects of a perceived reality which are made more salient in a communicating text or e-text. We will interpret this virtual museum as a hypertext which ?makes possible the assembly, retrieval, display and manipulation? (Kok 2004) of objects belonging to different cultures. The structural analysis of the virtual museum as a hypertext will focus on three orders of abstraction (Kok 2004): item, lexia, and cluster. Dividing civilization into 20 periods of time, from making us human (2,000,000 - 9000 BC) up to the world of our making (1914 - 2010 AD), the creators of the digital museum used 100 objects to make sense of the cultural realities which dominated our civilization. The History of the World in 100 Objects used images of these objects which can be considered ?as ideological and as power-laden as word (Jewitt 2008). Closely related to identities, ideologies embed those elements which provide a group legitimation, identification and cohesion. In our analysis of the 100 virtual objects framing e-civilization we will use the six categories which supply the structure of ideologies in the critical discourse analysis framework (van Dijk 2000: 69): membership, activities, goals, values/norms, position (group-relations), resources. The research questions will focus on the content of this digital museum: (1) the types of objects belonging to the 20 periods of e-civilization; (2) the salience of countries of origin for the 100 objects; (3) the salience of social practices framed in the non-formal teaching of e-civilization/culture; and on the visitors? response: (1) the types of attitudes expressed in the forum comments; (2) the types of messages visitors decoded from the analysis of the objects; (3) the (creative) value of such e-resources. Epidurals are a method of long-term pain relief administered by injecting and continuously delivering an anesthetic via catheter in the spine. This method of pain relief is often used for patients in the Obstetrics/Gynecology unit as well as those in pre- and post-operational care. For almost 2 million singleton vaginal deliveries across 27 states in 2008 (representing 65% of all US singleton vaginal births in 2008), 61% of patients received some form of an epidural or spinal injection [1]. Additionally, this number has been increasing. For the 18 states for which 2006 and 2008 data are available, the average of the state-level increases in epidural/spinal injections is approximately 4.2% revealing an overall increase in these injections. Just between 2000 and 2010, the use of epidural injections increased by 160% [2]. Commonly, epidural catheters are inserted into the patient’s back in the appropriate location and then secured to the body with an adhesive medical dressing. Movement and subsequent dislocation of the catheter beneath the adhesive medical dressing can result in inefficient anesthetic delivery, increased patient discomfort, and repeated administration of the epidural. Secondary migration of epidural catheters is a problem responsible for failure in approximately 6.8% of epidurals administered [3]. Requiring an anesthesiologist to repeat the procedure is also an increased cost. A solution to secondary migration of epidural catheters would ensure effective delivery of the anesthetic to the patient, reduce the need for a repeated procedure, and prevent unwanted additional healthcare expenses.

Abstract The public domain contains many work efforts that document the advantages of expandable drilling and completions systems within the industry (Filippov 1999, Lohoefer 2000). The ability to place a solid steel liner or patch into a well and transform it by cold working to a larger diameter provides an opportunity to drill deeper while maintaining sufficient wellbore diameter. The use of expandable technology has led to the development of a formable and retractable-segmented cone. The cone supports an expandable system capable of passing through the drift of a base casing that can then result in an expansion providing the equivalent drift diameter. The technology allows the placement of additional liner points in a well that can extend liner lengths as well as isolate sections of open hole that were previously impossible to isolate due to wellbore geometry restriction. There are no limitations on the number of open hole patches installed in a given well which are helpful when wells experience multiple drilling hazards. Each patch can pass through a previously installed patch. The idea of monodiameter expandable liners began in the early 2000s (Dupal 2002, Dean 2003). This paper presents the technical challenges, solutions, and testing of a novel monodiameter system that expands 11-3/4 in. 47 lb/ft pipe which can result in a post-expansion drift diameter of 12-1/4 in. Finite element analysis helped transform the concept from the theoretical system to field execution. The work efforts show the successful testing of the monobore system at surface, and the resulting field trials demonstrate the ability of the technology to fulfil the installation objectives. In addition, the success of the methodology has led to the development of additional monobore system sizes.

The themes of life and death, love and death, creativity and death, social upheavals and death are key in the writer's work. In the early period of his work, for example, in the novella One Hundred Days Before the Order (1980, published 1987), the final scene does not give a verydefinite answer - the soldier found in the ditch is either asleep or dead. The final remains open. In the works of the 1990s, the theme of death can be resolved both satirically (The Goat in the Milk (1994, published 1995)), tragic (The Sky of the Fallen (1997)) and dramatic (The Voroshilovsky Rifleman (1999)). At the turn of the 2000s and in the early 2000s, the writer used artistic techniques (metatext, Deus ex machina) that made it possible to “cancel” the physical death of the main characters (“I Plotted an Escape” (1999) and “The Mushroom King, or 36 Hours in the Life of an Almost Lonely Man” (2005)). This does not cancel the hero's severe moral crisis, but it preserves the possibility of positive changes. The novel the Plaster Trumpeter (2008-2022) is also a metatext. The writer dwells on such aspects as the attitude to death in society, the death of historical figures, death as an existential philosophical phenomenon, death and art. Death becomes almost the only irrevocable and authentic phenomenon in the life of a modern person surrounded by mirages. An important clarification of the author's position, in comparison with his previous work, can be considered the emphasis on the fact that art, regardless of whether it shows the physical death of a person or not, should help him to abandon mirages, see the truth and give hope to overcome at least moral death.

The effects of mechanical impact forces on neurological health is a critical concern, likely due to issues of traumatic brain injury (TBI) in sports and brain damage stemming from the potential of “sonic terrorism.” The quantitative analysis and evaluation of such forces on brain tissue function is very difficult. To address this issue, this research proposes a novel approach of using a cellular model subjected to mechanical vibration for analysis. Here, neuron-like differentiated neuroblastoma cells were subjected to vibration at frequencies of 20, 200, 2000, and 20000 Hz for a period of 24 hours at constant amplitude. Cell proliferation and inflammatory cytokine production, including IL-6, IL-1β, and TGF-β1, was measured as response of the cells and indicators of cellular health after vibrational treatment. Cell proliferation was found to increase after 20, 200, and 20000 Hz treatments; p<0.05) and decrease after 2000 Hz treatment (p<0.05). IL-6 production was found to decrease after 200 and 20000 Hz treatments (p<0.01) and increase after 20 and 2000 Hz treatments (p<0.01). IL-1β protein production was found to decrease after 20 Hz and increase after 200 Hz treatments (p<0.001), while TGF-β1 was found to decrease after 200 Hz treatment (p<0.001). The results suggest that cell proliferation and cytokine production serve as a sensitive measure to external impact forces applied to the cells. In addition, it is suggested that inflammatory mechanisms exhibit inhibitory “cross-talk” between IL-6 and IL-1β signaling pathways at 20 and 200 Hz. ABSTRACT Reservoir stimulation is akey technology to enabling carbon and renewable resources recovery from the subsurface. The combination of pulse- and fluid-driven fracture propagation has great potential to revolutionize the hydro-fracturing industry. In this study, we present a novel method that extends the existing traction-at-split-node method to allow mode-I fracture propagation in both dynamic and quasi-static time frames. We implement this method in an open-source code, Defmod, that adaptively alternates between quasi-static and dynamic governing equations. We introduce a quasi-linear weakening failure criterion that allows irreversible tensile failures. To couple the fracture development and fluid flow inside and outside the fracture, we introduce a method to modify the fracture's neighboring elements by an anisotropic permeability as a function of fracture width. To ensure mass conservation, we balance the fluid-injection volume with the fracture-opening volume, by defining virtual fluid sources in the neighboring elements. We first compare an example of two-dimensional (2D) pulse-driven fracturing with experimental results. Then we compare an example of 3D penny-shaped hydraulic fracture, developing from a pressurized borehole, against the analytical Kristianovich-Geertsma-de Klerk (KGD) solution. INTRODUCTION Numerically modeling tensile fracture propagation is of great interest in reservoir engineering (Chuprakov et al., 2011; Dahi-Taleghani and Olson, 2011; Jiang et al., 2015). Under in-situ stress conditions, natural rock failures are mostly in shear modes, such as fault activation, while tensile failures are sometimes attributed to magma/dike intrusions (Rivalta and Dahm, 2006; Aydin et al., 2006; Rutqvist et al., 2008). Induced tensile failure, typically hydraulic fracturing, has been widely used to enhance tight reservoirs’ permeability and greatly made unconventional hydrocarbon and geothermal resources accessible (Rubinstein and Mahani, 2015; Li et al., 2019). Several numerical methods have been applied to model hydraulic fracturing, such as the cohesive-zone method, extended finite-element method, and boundary-element method (Chen et al., 2021; Jin, 2018). We extend a well established traction-at-split-node (TSN) method, which has a strong track record for modeling dynamic fault ruptures (Day et al., 2005; Dalguer and Day, 2007), to model tensile failures.

We propose a novel variational Wave Acquisition Stereo System (WASS) that exploits new stereo reconstruction techniques for accurate estimates of the spatio-temporal dynamics of ocean waves. WASS has a significant advantage as a low-cost system in both installation and maintenance. A stereo camera view provides three-dimensional data (both in space and time) whose statistical content is richer than that of a time series retrieved from wave gauges, ultrasonic instruments or buoys, the latter being expensive to install and maintain. Indeed, wave spectra can be easily estimated from the multi-dimensional images obtained with WASS. The estimated spectra present an inertial range that decays as k−2.5, k being the wave number, in agreement with wave turbulence theory (Zakharov 1999, Socquet-Juglard et al. 2005). Further, the empirical probability density functions derived from the reconstructed surface data compare very well with theoretical models (Tayfun & Fedele 2007, Fedele 2008). The variational WASS is a promising technology with broader impacts in offshore engineering since it will enrich the understanding of the statistics of waves for an improved design of offshore structures.

In recent years, cool Japan anime, video games and manga have been recognized as important export-oriented merchandise in Japan. Another recent Japanese genre is light novels. Light novels are one of the genres of novels and construct a part of recent Japanese pop culture. In Japan recently, the anime, manga and live-action films have been adapted from the original light novels. Light novels were chiefly read by high and junior-high school student previously, but the range of the readers has been expanding widely in recent years. However, light novels have not been statistically studied yet. In the present study, 533 titles of popular light novels published in 2004-2020 were investigated to clarify the trends in the genre.Numbers were counted for each of 129 items, data of published year, publisher, label, platform first appeared on, length of time from the first publication to the release of the anime adaptation, length of time from the first publication to the manga adaptation and so on for each year. And a 17 x 129 cross-tabulation table was constructed. Then it was analyzed by correspondence analysis and cluster analysis.The results of the correspondence analysis showed a three-dimensional solution with a cumulative contribution ratio of 64 %. Each year was plotted on the three-dimensional space, then cluster analysis was performed on the plots with Ward’s method. The results of the cluster analysis showed that the plots could be divided into four periods; 2004-005, 2006-2015, 2016-2017 and 2018-2020.The results showed that KADOKAWA’s labels were popular between 2004 and 2014, but the other publishers’ labels which collect novels appearing in individuals’ private home pages or posted on web-sites became popular in recent years. The most important part of the business strategy of light novels is mass-production, which means a large number of works and writers are needed. As such, it stands to reason that internet novel submission sites have become an important source for publishers.The results also showed that it only took one or two years to produce anime for many titles between 2006 and 2014, but in recent years, the period of time has increased to four years and the number of cases where no anime was produced has also increased. Additionally, manga based on the light novels tends to be published within one year. This suggests that the center of the multimedia strategy of light novels has shifted from anime to manga. Since the mid-2010s, tablet devices and e-comics applications have rapidly developed. This has enabled publishers to rapidly produce and publish manga based on the original light novels. Moreover, it now takes longer to produce anime, because the quality of frames and productions costs have increased. Therefore, anime studios tend to select an original work of light novel carefully, observing the sales of the e-manga adaptation.

In this paper we apply the entrepreneurial effectuation theory (Sarasvathy 2001) and theories in expertise (Read & Sarasvathy 2005) in an empirical study in a particular context: musicianship as a form of entrepreneurship in the popular music industry. We apply the theories and empirical evidence in our framework by using a qualitative case study to analyze four ventures, four Finnish music groups. Based on the analysis we find extensions on Sarasvathy’s (2001) and Read and Sarasvathy’s (2005) work on three levels. First we find that the causation process is more typical in the “deliberate practice” (Read & Sarasvathy 2005) that forms the foundation for superior expert practice, which is a requirement for building novel and authentic cultural products. Secondly, we find that in the beginning of the business activities, these ventures are more effectual, when the situation tends to be resource-poor. We also find that even though the companies’ core teams are relatively small, once the business grows and the number of international partners increases the business processes and decisionmaking becomes inevitabely more causation driven.

The goal of this paper is to study the link between bank credit (and internal funding) and average firm size in Argentina. Besides the fact that economic growth tends to go hand in hand with larger firm size, the topic is of particular interest because of the severe credit crunch in Argentina in the aftermath of the 2001-2002 financial crisis. To this end, a novel three-digit industry-level dataset spanning the 2000-2010 period was constructed. The results confirm the expected positive impact of credit supply on average firm size. Furthermore, the study expands on common knowledge by testing the sensitivity of firm size to internal funding and the differential financing behavior of the primary and the manufacturing sector. The results do not seem to be driven by endogeneity bias.

Este documento es una actualización del trabajo original "Las reformas estructurales en América Latina: Qué se ha reformado y cómo medirlo" publicado en Diciembre de 2001. Este documento analiza los grandes cambios en las principales áreas de política económica estructural en América Latina entre 1985 y 2009 y presenta un conjunto de índices que intentan medir qué tan favorables son para el libre funcionamiento de los mercados las políticas comercial, financiera, tributaria, de privatizaciones y laboral. En una escala que va de 0 a 1, el índice promedio para todos los países y todas las áreas de política estructural se elevó de 0,39 en 1985 a 0,6 al terminar la década de los noventa y a 0,65 a fines de la década del 2000. Las reformas estructurales han sido profundas, especialmente en las áreas comercial, financiera, y en menor medida en las áreas de tributación y de privatización de los sectores de infraestructura. Los índices permiten comparaciones a través del tiempo, entre áreas y entre países. Sin embargo, son inadecuados para medir las políticas estructurales en Argentina y Venezuela durante la década del 2000, pues algunas de las políticas heterodoxas que han adoptado estos países no están cubiertas por los índices.
