AbstractThe intention of my article is to reopen the investigation into the heritage of the Crabeth family and their activities as glaziers of stained-glass windows along with other works of art they produced in the sixteenth century. For a long time it was believed that Pieter Dircksz Crabeth and his famous sons Dirck and Wouter originated from Gouda, where they achieved their greatest work: eighteen stained-glass windows for Sint Janskerk. In my contribution I give an account of the pre-Gouda period and make clear that their field of activities was wider and more far-reaching than is commonly agreed upon. Profiles of their patrons provide an insight into the network to which the Crabeths belonged. Their contacts with the land of Cuijk and the prince bishopric of Liège have been investigated and documented. Count Floris of Egmond-Buren and his commission to Pieter Crabeth to make eight windows for his castle in Grave in 1522 is highlighted. Research shows a patronage relationship between the house of Egmond and the Crabeth family. In a letter written by Abbott Nicolas de Malaise we find evidence of a stay by Dirck and Wouter Crabeth at Saint Hubert d'Ardenne around 1523 due to the rebuilding of the abbey church in Renaissance style. The impetus for this letter was a fatal accident caused by Wouter Crabeth's horse. The article goes into the judicial implications of such an event and the consequences for the person involved at that time. The letter expresses the abbot's concern about Wouter's stay in Saint-Hubert with regard to the continuity of the building project. Twenty years later Pieter and Dirck Crabeth are again invited by Abbott Remacle de Marche to produce stained-glass windows for the abbey church in Saint Hubert, which had been destroyed by fire in the intervening years. The window of Adolf von Schauenburg, who later became archbishop of Cologne, is a wonderful example from this period and it is the only known glass by Pieter Crabeth still in situ. Research into stylistic elements of the rendering of the suffragan bishop in the Gouda cartoon Confirmatio and the patron saint Lambert in the Schauenburg window show a remarkable resemblance between the two figures. In view of the activities of the Crabeths in Saint Hubert d'Ardenne, critical research is called for into the authorship of the windows in the bishopric of Liège and the probability of the glaziers being involved in glass production studios in its capital. New insights based upon thorough studies of material and written sources with detailed notes and glosses, along with recent archival investigations, are presented here in the hope that discussion about Pieter Crabeth and his sons Dirck and Wouter will be given new life and put into a wider perspective.

I offer further notes on the text of Propertius. In the apparatusΩis employed to indicate the archetype, i.e. the consensus of N and two separate groups of humanistic manuscripts that I denote by the lettersΠandΛ. TheΠMSS (FLP) derive from a lost manuscript of Petrarch, itself copied from the manuscript A (which is not extant after 2.1.63). TheΛMSS are largely a group isolated by J. L. Butrica (The Manuscript Tradition of Propertius, Phoenixsuppl. vol. 17, Toronto, 1984, 62–95), which derive from a third medieval source discovered by Poggio and brought to Italy, apparently in 1423. The oldestΛmanuscript is Vat. lat. 3273, copied by Panormita in Florence in 1427, here called T. Another independent descendant is S (Monacensis Univ. Cim. 22), written in Florencec.1460 by Poggio's son Jacopo. Three other Florentine copies of the 1460s descend from a single source later thanΛ: M (Paris. B. N. lat. 8233, formerlyμ); U (Vat. Urb. lat. 641, formerlyυ); and R (Bodmer. 141, once Abbey 5989). Butrica would cite also C (Romanus Casanatensis 15), written by Pomponio Letoc.1470; but its witness is vitiated by the frequency both of error and of interpolation and its presence would confuse rather than clarify our picture ofΛ. Ever since the decipherment of Linear B, a large amount has been written on Mycenaean spelling. The basic rules were established very quickly, although the debate is still continuing as to the theoretical basis of Mycenaean spelling; various models have been proposed here. One of the most serious problems for all existing models is that at the edges, there is spelling variation that simply cannot be captured by one and the same algorithm. Here, we shall look at two such cases:• the graphic rendering of the subphonemic glides j and w as in e.g. i-je-re-u, a-re-ku-tu-ru-wo which can be contrasted with later Greek ἱερεύς and ἀλεκτρυών where the glides are not or not routinely indicated;• and so-called plene writing; this term is used in a variety of meanings. Here, we shall deal with the graphic rendering of consonants in the coda of final syllables where the standard spelling rules would predict their omission, e.g. wa-na-ka rendering /wanaks/ where the spelling rules would predict a rendering wa-na.

AbstractThis article calls attention to documents relating to the early academic life of G. J. P. J. Bolland (1854–1922). During the late 1870s and early 1880s, Bolland was enthralled by the study of Old Germanic languages and Old English in particular. His endeavours soon caught the eye of Pieter Jacob Cosijn (1840–1899), Professor of Germanic Philology and Anglo-Saxon at Leiden University, who helped the Groningen-born student to further his studies. During his stays in London and Jena, Bolland communicated with prominent scholars, including Henry Sweet, Richard Morris and Eduard Sievers. Bolland’s annotated books, hand-written notes and scholarly correspondence provide a unique insight into academic life and student-professor relationships during the late nineteenth century. In addition, Bolland produced an Old English love poem and aBeowulfsummary that are published here for the first time.

Buffon added 14 notes contributed by one or both of the Forsters to the sixth supplement of the Histoire Naturelle published in Paris in 1782. All these additions deal with mammals, mainly South African: nine South African antelopes, the spring hare, tame sheep and three antelopes not found at the Cape of Good Hope. The descriptions are compared with the drawings by George Forster in the British Museum (Natural History) and with the Descriptiones Animalium written by J. R. Forster about 1775, but not published until 1844. Buffon included two plates engraved after drawings made by George Forster depicting the klipspringer and spring hare.

The fact that the Bantu languages are related was first mentioned in a short publication by Martin Heinrich Lichtenstein (Berlin) in 1811. Very few Bantu languages were known at that time: only Kongo (Kikongo) as it was spoken at the mouth of the Zaire river, and some languages of southern Africa, on which a few notes were published in the Narrative of an Expedition by Captain J. K. Tucker in 1818, but which were written originally by William Marsden (probably in 1808) and possibly published separately.

F. H. Rauscher, J. D. Robinson, and J. J. Jens (1998) reported that rats learned to complete a T-maze more quickly if they had been reared listening to a Mozart piano sonata. They interpreted this result as a demonstration of a “Mozart effect” in rats. Steele (2003) compared rat and human audiograms, in the context of piano note frequencies, and suggested that rats were deaf to most of the notes (69%) in the sonata. Steele concluded that the learning differences among the groups were not due to a Mozart effect. Rauscher (2006) argued for the use of a different rat audiogram which would increase the number of notes potentially heard to 57%. This is not a refutation of Steele’s conclusion that rats would not hear major portions of the sonata. These missing portions will deform the music structure heard by the rats. Whatever the rats hear, it is not the sonata written by Mozart. Additional comments are made about the current status of the Mozart-effect literature with human subjects.

E. J. Mishan, an iconoclastic economist who has taught at such schools as the London School of Economics and the New School for Social Research, is in this volume a provocateur, smashing staunchly held beliefs of the right (free trade and common markets are good for the economy), and the left (local jobs are always lost when factories close down, pay disparity between men and women signifies discrimination). He also pokes holes in the accepted wisdom held by all, arguing for example that economic growth does not necessarily improve lives. Those who believe the fallacies Mishan exposes to the light of reason in this book are, however, neither ignorant nor careless. The fallacies are all plausible, and intelligent people can be forgiven for believing them. Mishan simply wants readers to see these thirteen popular, persistent fallacies for what they are: Humbug. Mishan’s scintillating text is apolitical. In arguing that immigration does not benefit a country's economy, for example, he is not arguing in favor of restricting immigration. Rather, his goal is to test the assumptions behind the dearly held positions of both the left and the right or to expose what he calls the breathtaking fatuity that counts as wisdom these days. Mishan wants to interject common sense and logic into today's debates over the economy and, especially, the political arguments that translate into legislation that has a negative impact on people. Mishan’s ideas breathe new life into debates gone stale by ideology. As he notes, the fallacies in this volume travel in the highest circles, from debates in Congress to the pages of the Wall Street Journal, Time, and The Economist. Most are things everybody knows. He hopes, therefore, to expose the concerned citizen to the shock-treatment of discovering that much of what passes for conventional economic wisdom is in fact fallacious. As the Economist pointed out in its glowing review of the first edition of this book, Dr. Mishan has written the perfect book for anyone wishing to start the study of economics.

AbstractNote-taking is prevalent in academia—it is the basis of scholarly work, i.e. searching for information, collecting and reading literature, writing and collaborating, referred to as a “primitive” that assists these information activities (e.g., Palmer, C. L., Teffeau, L. C., & Pirmann, C. M. (2009). Scholarly information practices in the online environment: Themes from the literature and implications for library service development. Researchers and higher education students take notes throughout the inquiry cycle, i.e. while designing research, collecting data, analysing data, and writing the report. In addition, with written assignments being a considerable part of student academic work, notes are taken in the writing process, from generating ideas for writing tasks, through text planning and drafting to its editing. As this process may be challenging, digital note-taking has the potential to facilitate writing in academic contexts (Matysek, A., & Tomaszczyk, J. (2020). Digital wisdom in research work. Abstract Sanskrit. Various transcription systems have been used to romanize Skt.; the system used here is in accord with current practice. The Skt. short vowels are a (pronounced [J ]), i, and u; the long counterparts are ii, T, and ii, respectively. The symbols r and ! (the latter only occurring in a few forms from a single root) are syllabic liquids, and are short vowels in the Skt. grammatical tradition; f, which is of secondary origin in Indic, is to r as ii is to a. The letters e and o stand for syllabics which the native grammarians call diphthongs; they reflect Pinlr. * ay and * aw, respectively, and although not marked as such they are always LONG as to literal duration (but they are nevertheless at the same time ‘short diphthongs’). In Ved. devf nom.sg. ‘goddess’ < Pinlr. * daywi < PIE * deyw-iH2 both syllabics are long, even though only one letter carries a macron. The ‘long diphthongs’ (63-4) corresponding to e and o are are written iii and iiu, respectively. Many of the letters used in transcribing consonants are self-explanatory, such as m, r, p. The sound system of Indic, though complex, is highly patterned; the following is the scheme of the native grammarians, and is incidentally the order of the letters of the Devanagari’ writing system (read across):

Abstract The attention given to the arpeggio in eighteenth-century treatises is minimal by comparison with the detail in which other ornaments are discussed. The reason for this may not be, as Neumann believes, that theorists resorted to a few stereotyped comments and standard realizations because of the difficulty of describing and illustrating the actual performance of this ornament, but because the arpeggio in galant and Classical keyboard music is relatively unproblematic. The complex notational systems used in French keyboard music of the early part of the eighteenth century to distinguish between ascending and descending arpeggios and to indicate various types of arpeggios ornamented with passing notes are not relevant to Haydn's keyboard music, or, in general, to music and treatises on performance practice from the second half of the eighteenth century. Problems relating to the performance of passages written as a series of chords but marked ‘arpeggio’ (such as occur in J. S. Bach's Chromatic Fantasy in D minor, BWV.903, or in a number of C. P. E. Bach's freien Fantasien) are also irrelevant to a discussion of Haydn's keyboard music, since passages of this type do not occur: continuous arpeggios are, of course, found in Haydn's music but they are figurative and written with precise note values rather than being a function of improvisation. Arpeggios, as ornaments, in Haydn's music occur relatively infrequently, are almost always associated with the strongest beats in the bar, and, I would suggest, primarily serve the purpose of accentuation.

In this work, Eulerian transport equations are derived for a polydispersed cloud of droplets in a turbulent carrier flow, which take into account the effects of polydispersion and coalescence. The approach is an extension of the Direct Quadrature Method Of Moments (DQMOM) formalism initially proposed by Marchisio and Fox (2005, J. Aerosol Sci., 36, pp. 43–95). In the initial DQMOM approach of Marchisio and Fox, the effects of polydispersion and coalescence can only be accounted for in the mass balance equations. By combining the DQMOM approach and the joint fluid-particle pdf approach of Simonin (1996, Von Karman Lecture Notes), Eulerian transport equations can be written in the frame of the DQMOM formalism for the velocity, agitation and fluid-particle covariance, which quantities are required to predict the behavior of a cloud of droplets in a turbulent flow. It is formally shown that the Eulerian transport equations in the DQMOM framework are the same equations as those in the multi-class Eulerian approach, except that now there is a collision term in the equations. The collision term due to coalescence can be easily expressed due to the assumptions made in the DQMOM framework, and it is shown that it couples the transport equations of the different classes and dispersed phase statistics, according to the change of number, mass and momentum during coalescence.
