Streszczenie:
A non-profit organisation is an organisation that uses its surplus of the revenues to achieve its ultimate objective, rather than distributing its income to the organisation’s shareholders, leaders or members. Thus, the man aim of this paper is to analyse and assess the system and structure of financing of non-profit organisation considering the economic, social and legislative conditions of the Slovak Republic. The results reveal that the basic principle of financing the non-profit sector in Slovakia is its multi-sourcing. Its essence is to use multiple sources of income in the non-profit organisations, in order to reach their own independence on one financial source, as well as to avoid negative consequences of its unexpected failure. Keywords: Financing, non-profit organisation, public sources, self-financing.

Streszczenie:
Purpose – This study aims to explore the relationship between mission statements and organisational performance in non-profit organisations. It also examines the role of organisational commitment in moderating that relationship. Design/methodology/approach – Invitations were sent to a network of non-profit organisations inviting them to complete an online survey. Usable responses were obtained from 117 respondents from 30 countries. Hierarchical regression was used to test the hypotheses. Findings – The findings suggest that mission statements have a significant positive relationship with organisational performance. Also, organisational commitment, particularly affective commitment, moderates the relationship between mission statements and organisational performance. Research limitations/implications – The results confirm that the relationship between mission statements and organisational performance is complex. The study of intervening variables is a worthwhile program of research. Practical implications – The findings suggest that non-profit organisations can improve performance by communicating their mission and building emotional commitment to their cause. Originality/value – This is one of the first studies to examine the role of organisational commitment in influencing the relationship between mission statements and performance. This study contributes to our understanding of the impact of mission statements on performance in non-profit organisations.

Streszczenie:
In this paper, we explore the methodologies underpinning two participatory research collaborations with Australian non-profit organisations that aimed to build data capability and social benefit in data use. We suggest that studying and intervening in data practices in situ, that is, in organisational data settings expands opportunities for improving the social value of data. These situated and collaborative approaches not only address the ‘expertise lag’ for non-profits but also help to realign the potential social value of organisational data use. We explore the relationship between data literacy, data expertise and data capability to test the idea that collaborative work with non-profit organisations can be a practical step towards addressing data equity and generating data-driven social outcomes. Rather than adopting approaches to data literacy that focus on individuals – or ideal ‘data citizens’ – we target the organisation-wide data settings, goals and practices of the non-profit sector. We conclude that participatory methods can embed social value-generating data capability where it can be sustained at an organisational level, aligning with community needs to promote collaborative data action.

Streszczenie:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to propose a conceptual framework that explores the relationships among the following constructs: corporate/organisational culture, market orientation, organisational commitment and organisational performance in non-profit organisations. Design/methodology/approach – In line with previous studies in the field, a quantitative research design was adopted. The data collection was performed through a mail survey of a sample of Portuguese non-profit organisations operating in the area of health. Structural equation modelling was used as a means to analyse the hypothesised relationships. Findings – Results have shown that organisational culture impacts on organisational performance. Concerning the market orientation consequences, the study results suggest that higher levels of market orientation result in both high levels of organisational commitment and organisational performance. Results also suggest that organisational commitment does not affect performance in a very significant way. Research limitations/implications – The study was restricted to non-profit organisations, particularly those operating in the area of health and used cross-sectional data to test the research model and hypotheses. Whilst these findings remain valid, they cannot be used for universal generalisations. This study has significant theoretical and practical implications. Practical implications – Practitioners and researchers agree that organisational culture may lead to different performance results, although little attention has been given to this issue. The study is useful for understanding organisational culture, market orientation, organisational commitment and organisational performance in non-profit organisations. Originality/value – This paper offers original findings through simultaneously examining the relationships between organisational culture, market orientation, organisational commitment and organisational performance in the context of non-profit organisations. The findings add weight to the recent emphasis on business-oriented approaches as a lever for improving performance in non-profit organisations.

Marketing has always been a key subject in commercial organisations, being an integral part of the business strategy and plans. In the non-profit sector, there is still a reticence towards the subject, often seen as either unnecessary or even a waste of the often very limited financial resources. As a reaction to that, this work discusses the importance and use of marketing in non-profit organisations and explores the issues around the subject with relation to the non-profit entities as well from a theoretical point of view as through case studies where the marketing efforts of a number of different non-profit organisations were analysed. The overall objective is to prove that also in non-profit organisations marketing should be an integral part of the overall business plan and is key to the overall success of the non-profit organisation.

Streszczenie:
The aim of this study is to understand the importance of public relations activity in non-profit organisations. The study emphasizes the bearing public relations activities can have on non-profit organisations in the contemporary world. This is especially true in an over communicated society where the vast majority of organisations compete to gain access to the scare media resources to put their message across to their potential clients, supporters and customers. Non-profit organisations generally have to depend on the donor agencies and therefore fail to attract a sizeable public relations budget. On the one hand, these organisations lack the resources to launch a successful public relations campaign and on the other the lack of knowledge and interest among general staff members makes it even harder for a public relations campaign to be developed or successfully launched. In this study, I used both quantitative and qualitative research methodologies to collect and analyse data. The data were collected from two non-profit organisations based in New Zealand working in the area of child welfare. The primary data were collected through semi-structured interviews and survey questionnaires. A single semi-structured interview was conducted with each team leader of the two selected organisations. However, this was like skimming the surface and in-depth interviews would have helped me to collect richer data. On the other hand the data collected was sufficient for this research and it helped me to create a holistic understanding of the topic. The findings of the research highlight that most non-profit organisations working in the area of child welfare find it hard to market themselves due to a lack of funds and employee involvement. Although the findings from the study are significant; caution is necessary in applying the results to other scenarios and in making generalizations. One of the key findings from this research is that both organisations did not use public relations as a strategy. Most decision related to public relations was made on random basis and no long term strategic plan was made to adopt public relations as a core strategy to build creditability among their stakeholders.

Streszczenie:
This paper investigated trends in social entrepreneurship within non-profit organisations (NPOs). It was inspired by a survey conducted by Trialogue, a non-profit research organisation that surveys corporate social investment in South Africa. The survey showed a significant number of Non-profit organisations (69%) are moving toward developing social enterprise due to issues of sustainability. The research sought to ascertain what are the causes for the trend. The method of sampling used was non-probability, purposeful sampling to select 12 organisations from the available population. An exploratory qualitative study was conducted via face-to-face interviews with 12 organisations and 14 respondents. The transcripts of each were manually reviewed line-by-line for common themes to compare and generate results. The study was undertaken to better understand what motivated NPOs to social entrepreneurship and how they identified and exploited opportunities; distributed revenues and what form of relationship was created with the parent organization. The study reviewed theoretical models and selected a best-fit model of the Opportunity Creation Process which had to be modified to suit the trends in thought that arose from the study. The findings showed that funding challenges of the parent NPO and limited access to funds were key features likely to illustrate when an NPO will move into social entrepreneurship. The research concludes with evidence demonstrating that NPOs are not always willing participants in the social enterprise game, but are forced to discover opportunities to prove to funders that they are seeking means to be sustainable, with varying degrees of success. The form of social enterprise they select is often determined by the centrality of the NPOs mission to that of the social enterprise.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: On a global scale, there are substantial studies about volunteerism. However, literature on volunteerism in South Africa, especially qualitative studies, is limited. The limited literature in South Africa does, however, suggest differences between Northern and Southern global contexts in terms of motivation for volunteering. In order to further build the South African literature in this area, this study explored the experiences of volunteers in a Stellenbosch based NPO. Their experiences encapsulate their motivations, challenges, and benefits of volunteering in their role as mentors to marginalised youth in this area. An overarching developmental framework was utilised to understand the volunteers’ motivations, and supplementary perspectives (Role-ID theory; citizenship and mentoring) were used to explore and contextualise their experiences. Within this framework, a qualitative methodology was employed to explore, gather, describe, and interpret the data. Two group interviews with 5 participants each were conducted. This was supplemented by 3 individual interviews. An interpretive phenomenological analytical approach was used to analyse the data. Findings suggested that other-oriented motivations, citizenship, sense of belonging, social exchange, self-enhancement, positive role model identity, improved personal and familial relations, wilderness solo experience, personal satisfaction and reward in seeing the fruit of their labour were some of the significant themes that emerged for volunteers from their volunteer experience. The main challenge they faced was that of transport mobility to keep mentor appointments. The implications of the findings for South African perspectives on volunteering are discussed.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Wêreldwyd is daar navorsing gedoen oor vrywillige werk.

The research study investigated the potential impact that organisational capacity assessments can have on the long-term sustainability of non-profit organisations (NPOs). The researcher employed longitudinal research design as the main instrument in the collection of data. Data was collected from four local non-profit organisations in the Cullinan and Bronkhorstspruit areas of South Africa. These organisations were evaluated by means of a questionnaire, which was developed by the researcher. NPOs can only play a pivotal role in community and social services if management, leadership, governance and other elements of organisational capacity are well developed and continuously strengthened. This is critical for attracting local and international donors who provide crucial running costs and relieve national, provincial and local government departments of the financial burden. Currently, the South African government supports NPOs in South Africa. The legislative and registration aspects of NPOs are regulated by the NPO Act (Act 71 of 1997) and the Income Tax Act (Act 58 of 1962). The State of South African Registered NPOs Report 2010/2011 indicated a growth of the number of registrations to have increased by 8.3%. However, in the same financial year a total number of 468 NPOs were deregistered; 98% of these lost their registration due to non-compliance of regulatory requirements. According to the State of South African Registered NPOs Report (2016) the total number of applications received for the financial year was 16 726 (53.7%), however 4 421 (46%) did not meet the requirements of sections 12-13 of the NPO Act, an issue that would definitely affect the existence of non-compliant institutions.

Streszczenie:
It is not unknown that NonProfit Organisations (NPOs) across South Africa are failing in their objective to provide adequate service delivery. The current poor wellbeing of NPOs is largely attributed to a lack of funding. Poor funding refers to challenges regarding internal fundraising efforts, government grants as well as international donations. The struggle to raise adequate funds has not only negatively impacted the scope of service delivery, but has also contributed to the closure of NPOs throughout the country. NPO's financial struggles are compounded by their inadequate financial reporting and management. The poor and inconsistent financial reporting and management does not encourage funders to part with their money. The unfortunate ripple effect of the poor financial reporting and management is a downscaling in service provision or, in more severe circumstances, closure. This dissertation sets out to analyse the financial wellbeing of NPOs within the Western Cape. In doing so, it set out to: To discover and describe the current condition of financial reporting; To analyse the NPO's financial sustainability and lastly; and To explore the sources of funding of NPOs. The three aims were achieved through the use of a financial trend analysis and financial ratios.

Streszczenie:
Non-profit organisations play a critical role in many societies because they fulfill the needs in areas that are not covered by the public or private sector. The primary purpose of all non-profit organisations is not generating income and, in most cases, the income from their own activities is not enough to survive. Therefore, they are forced to look for additional ways of funding and are dependent on them. These types of financial resources can be divided into two main groups – internal and external resources. Income from own activities and member-ship fees can be an example of internal resources. Subsidies from the state or municipalities, sponsorship money, and donations are part of organisations’ external resources. The main aim of this paper is to reveal the influence of different types of financial resources of non-profit sport organisations on their strategy. The article applies general findings for non-profit organ-isations from the paper of Stone, Bigelov, and Crittenden (1999) on “Research on strategic management in non-profit organisations” on the organisations from the sport area. Funding and financial resources may influence the components of a strategic process: formulation, content, and implementation. This paper focuses on the extent in which funding and financial resources affect the organisation’s strategic management and describes the influence of different types of financial resources on non-profit sport organisations’ strategy by reviewing a range of studies on the strategic process and funding of non-profit organizations that are applicable in sports. The article summarizes different findings and issues that have been de-scribed and published in the pre-reviewed academic journals with no restriction on the date of the issue.

Streszczenie:
This study investigates the Business Process Management (BPM) maturity and process performance of the Dutch Department of Defence (DDoD). Like any other organisation, defence departments use BPM to manage their daily business processes. Despite using BPM, the organisation has never undertaken the initiative to analyse its BPM Maturity level and process performance. This paper presents the first results of such a study and compares this to similar military organisations, non-profit organisations and other organisations in the private sector. The DDoD BPM Maturity index score of 2.66 is similar to that of peer organisations. The study provides some suggestions for research and practical implications for further Business Process Maturity development of the DDoD organisation.

Streszczenie:
Purpose – the paper is concerned with the issue of further education in non-profit organisations (NPOs) using training programs for their managers (TPM) and their impact on organisation development. The study aim was to find out whether and how the existence of TPM in the organisation depends on the founder, sector and duration of its economic activity. It also investigates which competencies the NPO managers perceive as the key ones. Research methodology – the study, based on the research questionnaire, included 69 NPOs. The dependence of TPM on defined characteristics has been assessed using Pearson’s chi-squared test or logistic regression. Conclusions (findings) – the results indicate that the usage of TPM is related to the size and founder of NPO. The other examined characteristics do not have a statistically significant effect. Furthermore, competencies considered by NPO managers as the most important were specified. Research limitations – follow from the size of the research sample. Practical implications – also, NPOs should focus on developing competencies mentioned in the study and evaluate them using impacts on the results of work activities. Originality/Value – the influence of training of managers on the development of NPOs is not sufficiently addressed in the literature

Streszczenie:
The main goal of the paper is to evaluate the product recall activities from the perspective of customers and retail representatives. To achieve this goal, primary quantitative research has been carried out, which examines consumers' attitudes towards the environmentally responsible activities of organizations and towards activities supporting the recall of unnecessary products. The survey was performed between November and December 2020 and involved 4,888 Slovak consumers. Respondents were selected to meet a representative sample for gender, age, education, size of residence, and income. Clearly, there is room for improving the awareness of ultimate customer on the market. The fact that quite a high number of customers would be willing to behave desirably, however they “forget”, appears positive. It is therefore a task of a number of entities involved in the modern marketing management (for-profit organisations, non-profit organisations, civil initiatives, educational institutions at several levels, state apparatus, etc.) to sufficiently communicate the purpose of the reverse distribution in order to clarify the role of the driving force for ultimate customers.
