Streszczenie:
In the present study, the problem of geometrically nonlinear free vibrations of functionally graded rectangular plates (FGRP) is studied. A homogenization technique has been developed to reduce the FGRP problem under consideration to that of isotropic homogeneous rectangular plate. The material properties of the functionally graded composites examined herein are assumed to be graded in the thickness direction of the plate and estimated through the rule of mixture. The proposed theoretical model is based on the classical plate theory and the Von Karman relationships, and the amplitude equation is derived in the form of a set of non-linear algebraic equation using Hamilton’s principle and a multimode approach. The fundamental nonlinear frequency parameters and the bending stress are then calculated using the iterative and explicit methods of solution to show the effect of the vibration amplitudes and the material distributions. The results obtained in this study are found to be in a good agreement with the published ones dealing with the problem of large vibration of functionally graded plates.

Streszczenie:
This paper deals with nonlinear free axisymmetric vibrations of functionally graded thin circular plates whose properties vary through its thickness. The inhomogeneity of the plate is characterized by a power law variation of the Young’s modulus and mass density of the material along the thickness direction, whereas Poisson’s ratio is assumed to be constant. The theoretical model is based on Hamilton’s principle and spectral analysis using a basis of admissible Bessel’s functions to yield the frequencies of the circular plates under clamped boundary conditions on the basis of the classical plate theory. The large vibration amplitudes problem, reduced to a set of non-linear algebraic equations, is solved numerically. The non-linear to linear frequency ratios are presented for various values of the volume fraction index n showing hardening type non-linearity. The distribution of the radial bending stress associated to the non-linear mode shape is also given for various vibration amplitudes, and is compared with those predicted by the linear theory.

Streszczenie:
This paper addresses the formulation of displacement based, non-linear, plate models adopting Eringen's non-local elasticity, to study the modes of vibration of thin, nano plates. Plate models governed by ordinary differential equations of motion with generalized displacements as unknowns have some advantages over mixed type formulations, but difficulties arise in the development of such non-linear models when non-local effects are taken into account. To circumvent those difficulties, approximations of debatable justification can be imposed. Different approximations are discussed here and the accuracy of the best non-local, non-linear displacement based model achieved is put to test, by carrying out comparisons with a model based on Airy’s stress function.

Streszczenie:
Vibration analysis of axially moving functionally graded plates with internal line supports and temperature-dependent properties is investigated using harmonic differential quadrature method. The plate is subjected to static in-plane forces while out-of-plane loading is dynamic. Stability of an axially moving plate, traveling at a constant velocity between different supports and experiencing small transverse vibrations are considered. The series of internal rigid line supports parallel to the plate edges are considered together with various arbitrary combinations of boundary conditions. Material properties of the plate are assumed temperature-dependent which is a non-linear function of temperature and differ continuously through thickness according to a power-law distribution of the volume fractions of the plate constituents. Two types of micromechanical models, namely, the Voigt and Mori–Tanaka models are considered. Based on the classical plate theory, the governing equations are obtained for functionally graded plate using the Hamilton’s principle. In the frame of a general dynamic analysis, it is shown that the onset of instability takes place in the form of divergence. The plate may experience divergence or flutter instability at a super critical velocity. Results for dynamic analysis of isotropic and laminated plates are validated with available data in the existing literature, which show excellent agreement. Furthermore, some new results are presented for vibration analysis of functionally graded material plates to study effects of the location of line supports, material properties, volume fraction, temperature, loading, aspect ratio and speed.

Then, explicit analytical solutions are presented, based on the semi-analytical model previously developed by EL Kadiri et al. [1-2] for beams and rectangular plates, which allow direct and easy calculation for the first non-linear axisymmetric mode shape, with their associated non-linear frequencies of FG circular plates and which are expected to be very useful in engineering applications and in further analytical developments. An excellent agreement is found with the results obtained by the iterative method.

Streszczenie:
The present work aims to study the non-linear vibrations in a cracked orthotropic tapered micro-plate. Linear and parabolic variation in the plate thickness is assumed in one as well as two directions. The partial crack is located in the centre, and it is continuous; this crack’s location is arbitrary and can be varied within the centre-line. Based on classical plate theory, the equilibrium principle is applied, and the governing equation of tapered orthotropic plate is derived. Additionally, the microstructure’s effect has been included in the governing equation using the non-classical modified couple stress theory. The simplified line spring model is used to consider the impact of partial crack on the plate dynamics and is incorporated using in-plane forces and bending moments. The introduction of Berger’s formulation brings the non-linearity in the model in terms of in-plane forces. Here, Galerkin’s method has been chosen for converting the derived governing equation into time-dependent modal coordinates, which uses an approximate solution technique to solve the non-linear Duffing equation. The crack is considered along the fibres and across the fibres to show the effect of orthotropy. Results are presented for an orthotropic cracked plate with non-uniform thickness. The effects of the variation of taper constants, crack location, crack length, internal material length scale parameter on the fundamental frequency are obtained for two different boundary conditions. The non-linear frequency response curves are plotted to show the effect of non-linearity on the system dynamics using the method of multiple scales, and the contribution of taper constants and crack parameters on non-linearity is shown with bending-hardening and bending-softening phenomenon. It has been found that vibration characteristics are affected by the taper parameters and fibre direction for a cracked orthotropic plate.

Streszczenie:
The aim of this paper is to investigate experimentally the effect of large vibration of a cantilever and a fully free rectangular plate made by a Fused Filament Fabrication process. Furthermore, this investigation attempts to compare our measurements and those obtained in the literature experimentally. For this purpose, a test rig was designed and manufactured for all experimental trials. The plate was excited randomly and harmonically at large displacement respectively, to obtain the linear and non-linear frequencies parameter. The non-linear dynamic behaviour of our structure at forced vibration is figured by exciting the plate at large displacement. The dependence of frequency and amplitude vibration are examined for the first, second, and third mode shapes. The non-linear dynamic behaviour of cantilever plates is compared with literature to illustrate the convergence of our results by using our specific mechanical properties, printing parameters, and process. Furthermore, the non-dimensional comparison is shown by 33.38%, 5.83%, and 20.58% for the first, second, and third mode shapes, respectively. Experimental tests will be performed on a 3D-printed metal plate to improve the present work. This work is intended to determine the dynamic proprieties of our parts in order to manufacture a safe and comfort machine. Actually, the dynamic behaviour of our 3D printing plates is compared with the obtained in the case of the isotropic plate for the aim to predict the convergence of both structures.

Streszczenie:
Solutions have been obtained for the harmonic vibrations of five-layer plates by means of a finite element method. This method is an extension of a previously developed analysis for three-layer plates. The five-layer plates contain two constrained viscoelastic layers which provide the damping. The degenerate case when the thickness of the middle elastic layer becomes zero and the plate is reduced to a four-layer one has also been included in the solution procedure. Moreover, the method allows for the study of both torsional and transverse vibrations of five (or four)-layer beams treated as vibrating plates with a large aspect ratio. As in the case of three-layer plates, triangular finite elements are used to allow for a greater variety of shapes. In the analysis damping is introduced by replacing the real moduli of the viscoelastic material by complex equivalent moduli which account for the phase difference between strain and stress. The present method allows for the non-linear stress-strain behaviour of the viscoelastic layers, the effects of the rotatory inertia and the extension within the viscoelastic layers. The finite element computations have been verified by comparison with experimental results for four-layer and five-layer beams in transverse and torsional vibrations and a five-layer square plate in transverse vibration.

Streszczenie:
Geometrically non-linear free vibrations of the composite laminated plates are investigated using new multi modal approach to discretization of motion equations . The non-linear governing equations for laminated plates are derived by Hamilton’s principle using first-order shear deformation theory. Due to proposed algorithm of the discretization all unknown functions except of transverse displacement are eliminated and governing equations are reduced to system of ordinary differential equations in time by the Bubnov-Galerkin procedure. The expansion of all unknown functions in the truncated Fourier series is performed using the eigenfunctions of the linear vibration problems and solutions of the sequence of elasticity problems. All auxiliary problems are solved by RFM (R-functions method).

The Cristal Baschet is a musical instrument designed by the Baschet brothers in the 1950s. The sounds produced by this instrument result from vibrations induced by friction, caused by the interaction between the musician's wet fingers and glass rods. Each rod is connected to a resonator made of an assembly of beams, whose dynamic characteristics determine the pitch of the note. The vibrations are then transmitted to large, thin metal plates that act as radiating elements. The instrument's fabrication and tuning rely primarily on empirical know-how. The objective of the thesis is to build a model of the acoustic functioning of the instrument, to better understand the influence of design parameters on playability and the unique timbre of the sound produced.A minimal model is developed to account for the self-oscillations resulting from friction. The resonator is described by its modal basis, derived from a numerical model, validated by an experimental modal analysis. The interaction between the finger and the resonator is governed by a friction law known from the literature. This law is measured using an appropriate inverse method developed to identify the specifics of the frictional contact between the wet finger and the glass rod. For this dynamic system, the conditions for the appearance of self-oscillations are studied through linear stability analysis and also through time-domain simulations. These allow for a discussion of the role of design and tuning parameters of the resonator on the ease of sound emission, i.e., the playability of the instrument. The minimal model of the instrument is enriched to take into account elements connected to the resonator, such as free rods (whiskers) or thin metal plates (diffusers). These elements induce significant spectral enrichment, contributing to the sound identity of the instrument. The whiskers give rise to sympathetic vibrations, whose conditions of appearance can be modulated over time, leading to unusual perceptual effects. This phenomenon is experimentally demonstrated, and the controlling parameters are identified through numerical parametric studies. The thin metal plates vibrate with large amplitudes, which induces geometric nonlinearities leading to spectral enrichment similar to that found in the sounds produced by brass instruments. This effect, studied experimentally, is expressed relatively unevenly across the instrument’s range. The work developed in the thesis helps to understand and prioritize the physical mechanisms involved in the sound production of the instrument, thereby contributing to the formalization of design rules useful for its development

Streszczenie:
A study has been done on different methods to solve the linear and non-linear problems with single or multi degrees of freedom structures. To do that direct time integration methods are used to solve the dynamic equilibrium equations. It has been tried to perform general methods to apply in most structures. In this thesis structures are made of cables and bars but the solution methods which is presented can be applied for any structure, and to utilize those implicit and explicit methods for all structures it is needed to know the tangent stiffness matrix and mass matrix for the structure. Then, it would be possible to analyze the dynamic response of structures under general loads and by general it can be understood that by application of arbitrary forces on different nodes of structure, the method generates result based on applied forces. It is crucial to get the right tangent stiffness matrix and mass matrix to know the dynamic equation in each node. Hence, the method will then work correctly to solve the dynamic problems. More, a parametric study has been done to see the effects of times step, stiffness of elements, length of elements, and other mechanical properties of elements, and this parametric study enables one to produce new results by changing every parameter. Also, continuation of the study on x-frame tensegrity has been done by solving them to check out dynamic response of structure with proposed methods of this thesis. Moreover, a method is presented to use the codes of solver methods of current thesis to apply them for other structures. Hence, as a future work, one can combine the codes of structures and solver codes of this thesis for dynamic response of structure. In fact the main effort of this thesis is on presenting different methods to solve various structures.

Streszczenie:
In the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) LRFD specification, the shear lag coefficient for plate members is dependent on only the ratio of the welding length to the plate width. To determine how this ratio influences the shear lag coefficient and whether there are other factors that should be considered, a finite element investigation was conducted. Experimental data from a previous study conducted at Virginia Tech was used for comparison with the analytical model. Upon completion of the verification study, several parameters were investigated to determine their influence on the shear lag coefficient. These included the effects of weld length, eccentric load and imperfection created by the welding process. Shear lag coefficients were determined from the finite element analyses and compared with the AISC specification values.

This survey consists in a theoretical and an experimental study of non-assisted cylindrical liquid jets under transverse planar acoustic waves. Experiments show that acoustic velocity can lead to severe atomization. Two different breakup modes are pointed out and described which depend on the nozzle diameter. It is also reported that jet trajectory can deviate under specific acoustic conditions. Two theoretical models are proposed. The first one consists in a modal analysis of the vibrations of a jet when it flows into a transverse stationary acoustic field ; it shows the underlying physical phenomenon which is responsible for one of the breakup mode experimentally observed. The second model calls out for acoustic radiation pressure to explain deviation of jets

Streszczenie:
Carbon fiber reinforced epoxy composite stiffened panels are increasingly being used for structural components in large transport rotorcraft. However, problems are arising with high levels of vibration and interior noise due to the increased stiffness-to-density ratio of composites. The current investigation explores the potential of reducing vibrations in carbon/epoxy stiffened panels with the integration of acoustic black holes (ABH), namely features that incorporate a power law thickness taper. The proposed approach involves designing a taper into the thickness of the blade stiffeners as well as the thin plate. Integration of ABHs into the fuselage structure has the potential to reduce broadband vibrations. Multiple parametric studies with either an ABH integrated into the blade stiffener or a grid of ABHs integrated into the plate were conducted, and the tradeoffs between vibration amplitudes, panel mass, and compressive buckling load were examined. Carbon/epoxy panels were fabricated using vacuum-bag-oven processing with out-of-autoclave prepreg and verified to be of good quality. The integrated velocity response, a proxy for the radiated noise from a panel, and compressive buckling were simulated using finite elements. Comparisons were made to experimentally measured data from modal testing and compression buckling testing. Experimental results indicated that when an ABH is integrated into the blade stiffener and 15 ABHs are integrated into the plate in a grid configuration, the panel mass was unchanged, the integrated velocity response decreased by 2.82 dB, and the buckling load increased by 2.9% compared to a baseline non-tapered design.

In this study, a new approach for generating beam and plate finite elements is proposed for a large-deformation and large-rotation dynamical multibody simulation of thin structures. The elements employ curvatures and/or torsions in the definition of generalized coordinates. This definition of element degrees of freedom is based on intrinsic properties of a spatial curve or a surface and it avoids longitudinal elongations of the beams and plates with associated high frequency vibrations, which helps to avoid problems during numerical simulation.

Streszczenie:
Abstract Periodic, geometrically non-linear free and steady-state forced vibrations of fully clamped plates are investigated. The hierarchical finite element method (HFEM) and the harmonic balance method are used to derive the equations of motion in the frequency domain, which are solved by a continuation method. It is demonstrated that the HFEM requires far fewer degrees of freedom than the h-version of the FEM. Internal resonances due to modal coupling between modes with resonance frequencies related by a rational number, are discovered. In free vibration, internal resonances cause a very significant variation of the mode shape during the period of vibration. A similar behaviour is observed in steady-state forced vibration. The stability of the steady-state solutions is studied by Floquet’s theory and it is shown that stable multi-modal solutions occur.

Streszczenie:
The need for instruments that detect and quantify small amounts of chemical and biological agents has spurred the development of micro-scale and nano-scale resonators. Most of these sensors are variations of vibrating cantilever beams and rely on resonant frequency shifts to quantify added mass. While very sensitive in vacuum or low viscosity environments, these types of sensors suffer performance degradation in viscous fluids, where damping is significantly increased. This paper presents a unique sensor architecture consisting of an immersed micro-plate designed to vibrate rotationally about an axis as fluid flows past it in a micro-channel. The idea behind this design is that some of the energy in the incoming flow can be harvested due to fluid-structure interaction, thereby reducing the effective damping. Only a small outside energy input is then required to obtain sustained, large amplitude vibrations. We show how sensitivity vector techniques applied to such a device can provide an alternate means of effectively detecting small mass variations. A method of optimizing the feedback control in order to maximize sensitivity using a spline-based force surface spanning the state space is also presented.

Streszczenie:
The geometrically non-linear vibrations of plates under the combined effect of thermal fields and mechanical excitations are analyzed. With this purpose, an accurate model based on a p-version, hierarchical, first-order shear deformation finite element is employed. The constitutive material of the plates is linear elastic and isotropic. The equations of motion are solved in the time domain by an implicit time integration method. The temperature and the amplitude of the mechanical excitation are varied, and transitions from periodic to non-periodic motions are found.

Streszczenie:
Large-amplitude (geometrically nonlinear) forced vibrations of completely free sandwich and steel rectangular plates are investigated experimentally. Harmonic excitation is applied by using an electro-dynamic exciter and the plate vibration is measured by using laser Doppler vibrometers. A scanning laser Doppler vibrometer is used for experimental modal analysis since it provides non-contact vibration measurements with very high spatial resolution. The large-amplitude vibration experiments are carried out by using a single point Laser Doppler Vibrometer and a stepped-sine testing procedure. The non-linear frequency response curves are obtained by increasing and decreasing the excitation frequency in very small steps at specific force amplitudes controlled in a closed-loop. The experimental results are compared to numerical simulations obtained by reduced-order models and show very good agreement. The nonlinear damping is experimentally obtained as a function of the vibration amplitude.

Streszczenie:
Applications of the Sherman-Morrison matrix inversion formula are reviewed and demonstrated for several problems in sound and vibration control. The inversion formula enables one to easily separate the effect of a perturbation or subcomponent on the dynamic behavior of the overall system. Applications of this technique that are demonstrated here include: identifying optimal PZT electrical shunt parameter values to minimize sound radiation from a PZT-plate structure, identifying the optimal location and parameter values of a tuned dynamic vibration absorber attached to a multi-degree of freedom, damped system, and identifying and quantifying an isolated non-linearity in an otherwise linear system. Extensions to active control system design are also discussed.

Streszczenie:
Abstract Damping is largely increasing with the vibration amplitude during nonlinear vibrations of rectangular plates. At the same time, soft materials present an increase of their stiffness with the vibration frequency. These two phenomena appear together and are both explained in the framework of the viscoelasticity. While the literature on nonlinear vibrations of plates is very large, these aspects are rarely addressed. The present study uses the fractional solid model to describe the viscoelastic material behaviour. This allows to capture at the same time (i) the increase in the storage modulus with the vibration frequency and (ii) the frequency-dependent nonlinear damping in nonlinear vibrations of rectangular plates. The solution of the nonlinear vibration problems is obtained through Lagrange equations by deriving the potential energy of the plate and the dissipated energy, both geometrically nonlinear and frequency-dependent. The model is then applied to a silicone rubber rectangular plate tested experimentally. The plate was glued to a metal frame and harmonically excited by stepped sine testing at different force levels and the vibration response was measured by a laser Doppler vibrometer. The comparison of numerical and experimental results was satisfactorily carried out for: (i) nonlinear vibration responses in the frequency and time domain at different excitation levels, (ii) dissipated energy versus excitation frequency and excitation force, (iii) storage energy and (iv) loss factor, which is particularly interesting to evaluate the plate dissipation versus frequency at different excitation levels. Finally, the linear and nonlinear damping terms are compared.

Streszczenie:
Nonlinear vibrations of moderately thick functionally graded (FG) rectangular plates are investigated by considering a higher-order shear deformation theory that takes into account the thickness deformation effect. The geometrically nonlinear strain-displacement relationships are derived retaining full non-linear terms in the in-plane and transverse displacements and the three-dimensional constitutive equations are used by removing the assumption of zero transverse normal strain. The plate is assumed to have immovable boundary conditions at the edges. The equations of motion are obtained by using multi-modal energy approach. A code based on pseudo arc-length continuation and collocation scheme is utilized for numerical continuation and bifurcation analysis. Results show that higher-order thickness deformation theories yield a significant accuracy improvement for nonlinear vibrations of highly pressurized functionally graded plates.

Streszczenie:
Abstract A nonlinear adaptive vibration absorber to control the vibrations of flexible structures is investigated. The absorber is based on the saturation phenomenon associated with dynamical systems possessing quadratic nonlinearities and a two-to-one internal resonance. The technique is implemented by coupling a second-order controller with the structure’s response through a sensor and an actuator. Energy is exchanged between the structure and the controller and, near resonance, the structure’s response saturates to a small value. Experimental results are presented for the control of a rectangular plate and a cantilever beam using piezoelectric ceramics and magnetostrictive alloys as actuators. The control technique is implemented using a digital signal processing board and a modeling software. The control strategy is made adaptive by incorporating an efficient frequency-measurement technique. This is validated by successfully testing the control strategy for a non-conventional problem, where nonlinear effects hinder the application of the nonadaptive controller.

Streszczenie:
A pipeline girth weld may contain one single or multiple defects. If discrete multiple notches occur, current codes define by applying proximity rules the defect dimensions to be used in an ECA. The defect interaction rules contained in pipeline specific standards are based on linear elastic fracture mechanics with conservative approximations. Similar solutions for failure by plastic collapse are non-existent. In this study, using experimental data of wide plate tests, interaction criteria for ductile girth welds containing multiple coplanar surface breaking defects are proposed. Based on a simple plastic collapse assessment, defect length limits ensuring the onset of remote yielding in the pipe bodies are calculated. A two-tier assessment procedure, based on a comparison of the sum of the individual defect lengths with these characteristic limits, is proposed. If the total defect length is smaller than the characteristic defect length limit interaction will not occur. The defect length limit ensuring remote yielding in the case of multiple defects is dependent on the spacing between defects. The defect length limits also incorporate the effect of yield-to-tensile ratio. The performance behaviour of wide plates with coplanar surface-breaking defects is compared with existing and proposed interaction criteria. The assessment shows that the proposed defect interaction procedure is less conservative than the rules currently embodied in pipeline specific standards.
