Streszczenie:
ABSTRACT Aim The aim of the study is to investigate the galvanic corrosion potential of metal injection molding (MIM) brackets to that of conventional brackets under similar in vitro conditions with nickel-titanium and copper nickel-titanium archwires. Materials and methods Twenty-five maxillary premolar MIM stainless steel brackets and 25 conventional stainless steel brackets and archwires, 0.16 inch, each 10 mm length, 25 nickeltitanium wires, 25 copper nickel-titanium wires were used. They were divided into four groups which had five samples each. Combination of MIM bracket with copper nickel-titanium wire, MIM bracket with nickel-titanium wire and conventional stainless steel brackets with copper nickel-titanium wire and conventional stainless steel brackets with nickel-titanium wires which later were suspended in 350 ml of 1 M lactic acid solution media. Galvanic corrosion potential of four groups were analyzed under similar in vitro conditions. Precorrosion and postcorrosion elemental composition of MIM and conventional stainless steel bracket by scanning electron microscope (SEM) with energy dispersive spectroscope (EDS) was done. Results MIM bracket showed decreased corrosion susceptibility than conventional bracket with copper nickeltitanium wire. Both MIM and conventional bracket showed similar corrosion resistance potential in association with nickel-titanium archwires. It seems that both brackets are more compatible with copper nickel-titanium archwires regarding the decrease in the consequences of galvanic reaction. The EDS analysis showed that the MIM brackets with copper nickel-titanium wires released less metal ions than conventional bracket with copper nickeltitanium wires. Conclusion MIM brackets showed decreased corrosion susceptibility, copper nickel-titanium archwires are compatible with both the brackets than nickel-titanium archwires. Clinical significance Clinically MIM and conventional brackets behaved more or less similarly in terms of corrosion resistance. In order to decrease the corrosion potential of MIM brackets, more precise manufacturing technique should be improved to get a more smoother surface finish. Aim. To study the properties and resistance to cyclic loading of nickel-titanium files with a martensitic phase. The use of nickel-titanium instruments is an integral part of the endodontic treatment of root canals. During endodontic treatment, nickel-titanium instruments experience a huge load, which is manifested by fatigue of nickel-titanium instruments, in the form of a fracture.Purpose. To determine the resistance of nickel-titanium files to mechanical, chemical and temperature stress.Materials and methods. A nickel-titanium file with a martensitic S-flexi phase from Geosoft was selected as a study. Cyclic fatigue was determined using a simulation endodontic unit. Photo and video fixation was carried out as a calculation of the revolutions and breakage time of the tool in the process of determining cyclic fatigue. To assess changes in the structure of nickel-titanium instruments with a martensitic phase, electron scanning microscopy and determination of the elemental composition of the alloy were carried out.Results. In the course of the study, tests were carried out to determine the cyclic load, close to the clinical reception. After a series of cyclic load detection tests, S-flexi files showed different resistance to cyclic load. The results of cyclic fatigue are summarized in Table 1.Conclusion. High-quality and safe mechanical treatment of root canals is possible when using nickel-titanium S-flexi files. Due to the high resistance to mechanical, chemical and thermal stress.

Introduction. There is a concern about release of nickel and titanium after implantation of nitinol-containing devices.Objective. To evaluate serum nickel and titanium release after implantation of Amplatzer occluder.Materials and methods. In 38 pediatric patients with no history of nickel sensitivity, blood samples were drawn 24 hours before and 24 hours, 1, 3, 6, and 12 months after implantation. Nickel and titanium concentrations were measured by atomic absorption spectrophotometry.Results. The median serum nickel level which was 0.44 ng/mL before the implantation increased to 1.01 ng/mL 24 hours after implantation and 1.72 ng/mL one month after implantation. The maximum level was detected 3 months after implantation, with a median level of 1.96 ng/mL. During follow-up, the nickel levels decreased to those measured before implantation. Serum nickel levels at the 24th hour, 1st month, and 3rd month following implantation were found to have increased significantly. No patients showed a detectable serum titanium level.Discussion. This is the first study that evaluated both serum nickel and titanium release after implantation of the Amplatzer occluder. Our study shows that nickel is released from the device in the first few months after implantation. Therefore, in patients with nickel allergy, other devices may be considered.

Aim. Is the morphometric analysis of the working surfaces of endodontic rotating nickel-titanium instruments.Materials and methods. The chemical composition and physical properties of the three types of endodontic rotating nickel-titanium F2 instruments have been analyzed: proptaper Universal (PTu, Dentsply, Maillefer, Ballaigues, Switzeland), Ultrataper (Eurofile, China) and Superfile (Eurofile, China) protapers. The evaluation of endodontic treatment of 75 endoblocks was also carried out.Results. The research work shows that endodontic rotary instruments have both different chemical composition and heterogeneity of the alloy. The average comparable percentage of titanium and nickel in the studied alloy samples has been revealed. The quality of endodontic treatment of the endoblocks’ channels with various rotating nickel-titanium instruments is also comparable and meets the specified criteria.Conclusion. The morphometric analysis has revealed a difference in the structure of the metal alloy of the F2 protapers, with a comparable content of nickel (46-52%) and titanium (38-41%). The content of pure nickel-titanium alloy along the periphery of the endodontic instrument in Universal protapers ensures high cutting ability of the faces. The obtained data on different resistance to cyclic loads should be taken into account in the endodontic treatment of multi-root teeth. The analysis of the structure of the nickel-titanium alloy indicates the predetermination of the development of the tool’s fracture with prolonged use and the need to take into account the cycles of the endodontic rotary tool.

nternal heating of hollow cylinders with moving periodic heat source is examined in relation to surface treatment applications. This study includes three different cylinder materials, namely aluminum, nickel and titanium. Effective stresses in the cylinder wall are found to be mainly attributed to longitudinal temperature gradients. The aluminum cylinder shows sharper longitudinal temperature gradients as compared to the nickel and the titanium cylinders, which is due to the high value of the aluminum specific heat capacity. However, the larger Eα (elasticity modulus × thermal expansion coefficient) values for nickel cylinder result in higher levels of stress although nickel and titanium cylinders exhibit similar longitudinal temperature profiles. During dwelling time for the heating source at a certain spot, titanium cylinder exhibits lower levels of temperature increase as compared to aluminum and nickel cylinders, due to its lower value of thermal conductivity.

In this study, powder metallurgy was used to fabricate titanium nitride/nickel metal-matrix composites. First, titanium and nickel powders with weight ratios of 20:80, 50:50 and 80:20 were dry mixed for 24 h. After cold isostatic pressing, the green compacts were soaked in a water-based hot forging lubricant and sintered at 850, 950 and 1050 °C for 1.5 h in an air atmosphere. The effects of the amounts of titanium powder and the sintering temperatures on the mechanical properties (hardness, wear resistance and compressive strength) of the composites were investigated. The results indicated that titanium gradually transformed into titanium nitride near the surface after sintering due to the carbothermal reduction reaction; this transformation was observed to significantly increase the hardness. In addition, an oxygen-rich film was observed to form between the titanium nitride particles and the nickel matrix. An optimum sintering temperature of 950 °C provides the composites (titanium–nickel weight ratios of 20:80) the best mechanical properties (wear resistance and compressive strength) among other groups. Furthermore, increasing the titanium content to 80% in the composite increased the hardness; however, the wear resistance and compressive strength decreased.

This work aimed to produce mechanical components of nickel–titanium shape memory alloys using investment casting processes. Then, in order to validate processing, different designs of nickel–titanium shape memory alloy components as staple implants, Belleville springs, meshes, helical springs, screws and hexagonal honeycombs were produced and submitted to thermal and mechanical characterization. Thermoelastic martensitic transformation of the nickel–titanium shape memory alloy parts was determined by differential scanning calorimetry and electrical resistance with temperature, while the superelastic behaviour was verified by cyclic tensile and compression tests. It has been demonstrated that the employed investment casting processes are suitable to manufacture nickel–titanium shape memory alloy mechanical components with simple and complicated designs as well as functional properties related to phase transformation and superelasticity.

The nickel doped, nitrogen doped and nickel + nitrogen codoped rutile titanium dioxide have been investigated by ab initio calculations based on density functional theory. The electronic structure and optical performance of different ions doping models are researched through the obtained results, which reflects that the band gap of nickel and nitrogen codoped system declines apparently; the decrease of electron-hole pairs separation and charge carriers recombination rate becomes more desirable. Moreover, the optical absorption curves of nitrogen and nickel codoped rutile titanium dioxide demonstrate the higher photoresponse for visible-light than that of nickel or nitrogen single doped. The above results could provide theoretical basis for further developing of titanium dioxide photocatalyst and related experimental studies.

The reactions between nickel and germanium are investigated by the incorporation of a titanium interlayer on germanium (100) substrate. Under microwave annealing (MWA), the nickel germanide layers are formed from 150 °C to 350 °C for 360 s in ambient nitrogen atmosphere. It is found that the best quality nickel germanide is achieved by microwave annealing at 350 °C. The titanium interlayer becomes a titanium cap layer after annealing. Increasing the diffusion of Ni by MWA and decreasing the diffusion of Ni by Ti are ascribed to induce the uniform formation of nickel germanide layer at low MWA temperature.

This paper describes the structure and properties of an innovative Fe-Al-Si alloy with a reduced amount of silicon (5 wt. %) in order to avoid excessive brittleness. The alloy was produced by a combination of mechanical alloying and spark plasma sintering. Nickel and titanium were independently tested as the alloying elements for this alloy. It was found that wear resistance, which reached values comparable with tool steels, could be further improved by the addition of nickel. Nickel also improved the high-temperature oxidation behavior, because it lowers the liability of the oxide layers to spallation. Both nickel and titanium increased the hardness of the alloy. Titanium negatively influenced oxidation behavior and wear resistance because of the presence of titanium dioxide in the oxide layer and the brittle silicides that caused chipping wear, respectively.

Purpose: The effect of flushing at different temperatures on the preparation ability of rotary nickel-titanium files was investigated to provide guideline for clinical application. Methods: Sixty ProTaper Universal F1 rotary nickel-titanium files were randomly divided into three groups treated by flushing at 6°C, 23°C, and 40°C. Root canal preparation was conducted by step-by-step method on standardized nickel-titanium instrument fracture models. During preparation, the thrust force was set as 10 N, and water was continuously flushed. The motor speed was 350 rpm (rounds per minute), and the torque was 3.0 N cm. When the set torque was reached, the motor automatically rotated in the reverse direction and was pulled out. Results: Root canal preparation was performed using ProTaper Universal F1 rotary nickel-titanium files treated by flushing. The numbers of rotations before the device was fracture were 429.33 ± 214.68, 821.92 ± 410.43, and 1304.92 ± 297.81, respectively. When each root canal was completed, the numbers of instrument rotations were 272.15 ± 88.30, 188.85 ± 34.36, and 163.41 ± 16.18, respectively. Rank sum test and analysis of variance were performed by IBM SPSS Statistics v21.0 software, and both of them were p < 0.01, indicating that the number of cycles to failure (NCF) and the number of instrument rotations for each root tube were statistically different at the three temperatures. Conclusions: The self-made resin-simulated curved root canal can replace the real root canal to complete the root canal preparation experiment. The group of nickel-titanium files treated by flushing at 23°C can prepare more root canals and prolong the life of nickel-titanium files than at 6°C. When flushing was done at 40°C, the number of root canals prepared by nickel-titanium files was the highest, and it was not easy to damage the instrument, but lateral perforation occurred easily during root canal preparation.

Background: Thermally activated nickel-titanium wires have been widely used by orthodontists due to more constant forces, generation over longer activation spans, greater resistance to permanent deformation, superelasticity characteristics when cyclically loaded, better spring-back and less hysteresis. Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of clinical use and sterilization process on the Transition Temperature Range (TTR) of thermoset nickel-titanium wires using Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). Methods: Sections from four nickel-titanium wires (0.019 × 0.025-inch) belonging to four different brands were assessed in four different states. Two of the wires were assessed in the “as received” state, one after 60 days of clinical use, and one after 60 days of clinical use and subjected to a sterilization process (autoclaving). The segments of each archwire were tested using DSC at temperatures ranging from −80°C to 150°C at a rate of 10°C/min. Results: All the nickel-titanium memory thermoset wires presented with desirable property for clinical use. The shape memory property was not influenced by clinical use and sterilization process. Conclusion: There was no change in TTR of the nickel-titanium wires after clinical use and sterilization.

Conditions of electrodeposition, the structure and physical-mechanical properties (microhardness, base cohesion, internal stresses, corrosion currents) of nickel-based galvanic composition coatings with nano and micropowders of titanium boride are investigated. It is determined that electrocrystallization of nickel in the presence of boride nanoparticles leads to the formation of coatings with small-sized structural fragments, low porosity and increased physical-mechanical properties. Titanium nanoboride is simultaneously a component of the composition coating and an effective modifier of the nickel matrix. The presence of nanoboride in the electrolyte improves its performance by increasing the allowable upper limit of the cathode current density.

Carbon Nanofibers (CNF) layers were synthesized nickel-based thin-films on flat fused silica substrates. CNF synthesis was performed via thermal catalytic chemical vapor deposition of ethylene using nickel as metal catalyst. Different underlayer metal thin films, viz. titanium, tantalum and titanium-tungsten were tested in order to obtain stable and well-attached CNF films on fused silica substrates. It is found in case of titanium CNFs are formed on the nickel, but due to severe Ni/Ti inderdiffusion the titanium film looses its adhesive function, as a consequence of which the formed CNF film detaches from the substrate. The use of tantalum or titanium-tungsten as adhesion layer resulted in stable and well-adhered CNF films on fused silica substrates, of which the morphology can be controlled by the growth time.

Diffusion of both titanium and nickel was measured in the near stoichiometric Ni-49.4at.%Ti alloy with the B2 ordered structure. The radiotracer technique and the 44Ti and 63Ni isotopes were applied in the temperature interval from 900 to 1300 K. The penetration profiles were determined by precision parallel grinding or by ion beam sputtering at larger and smaller penetration depths, respectively. Titanium and nickel diffusivities were found to follow linear Arrhenius dependencies with the pre-exponential factors of 2.710-7 and 4.710-9 m2/s and the activation enthalpies of 205 and 143 kJ/mol, respectively. A vacancy mediated diffusion mechanism is suggested to provide diffusion of both nickel and titanium in the compound NiTi.

Streszczenie:
Dissimilar metal joints of stainless steel to titanium find extensive industrial applications especially in the nuclear industry. However, it is well known that fusion welding of stainless steel to titanium is difficult because of the formation of brittle intermetallic compounds and the associated problems. To avoid this, welding processes or techniques with high reliability and productivity for these dissimilar materials are demanded. In the present work, joints comprising of 304 stainless steel and commercially pure titanium were produced by friction welding using nickel as interlayer. Investigation on the mechanical properties of the joints shows the occurrence of highest hardness value at the interface of titanium and nickel interlayer. X-ray diffraction studies confirmed the presence of various types of intermetallic compounds at the interface of the welded joint. The tensile strength of the joint varies with the thickness of nickel interlayer used. Joints having maximum strength equals to 72% of that of titanium base metal could be produced. In all the joints, tensile failure occurred at Ti-Ni interface due to the presence of the intermetallic compounds at this interface. Fracture surface analysis reveals that the tensile fracture path is along the intermixing zone of titanium and nickel interlayer.

Streszczenie:
Recently titanium and nickel alloys have become eminent for making aeronautic and astronautic parts. Since both titanium and nickel alloys have very low thermal conductivity, the tool will be suffered from a huge damage by the generated heat during machining process. It is required for a durable tool with excellent cooling capacity. Therefore, in this research, cutting technology in strong alkaline water for machining of titanium and nickel alloys was developed and evaluated. Before cutting experiment, the corrosion resistance for titanium alloy and other materials were investigated. Then this cutting process was performed for evaluation in the vessel with strong alkaline water. The assayed materials were mainly Ti6Al4V. The cutting conditions were investigated in experiments. It is concluded from the results that; (1) The cooling capacity using strong alkaline water is very effective to maintain the cutting potential of tool, (2) The new tool is effective for high speed cutting of titanium alloys and nickel (3) The new tool and compulsory cooling system are economical and eco-friendly.

Streszczenie:
The thermomechanical properties of nickel–titanium-based Belleville washers have been analyzed in this investigation, together with their unusual mechanical and functional features, which can be attributed to the reversible phase transformation mechanisms of nickel–titanium alloys. In particular, numerical simulations have been carried out for a preliminary design of the Belleville washer, using a commercial finite element software and a special constitutive model for shape memory alloys. Subsequently, Belleville washers have been manufactured from a commercial pseudoelastic nickel–titanium alloy, by disk cutting and a successive shape setting by a thermomechanical treatment. Finally, the thermomechanical response of the washers, in terms of isothermal force–deflection curve and thermal cycles between phase transition temperatures, has been experimentally analyzed. The results highlighted a marked effect of the temperature on the characteristic curve, as well as good recovery capabilities under both mechanical and thermal cycles. In addition, nickel–titanium Belleville washers exhibit a marked hysteretic behavior, as a consequence of the hysteresis in the stress–strain response of the alloy. Thanks to these features, nickel–titanium Belleville washers can be used as smart elastic elements, that is, with tunable stiffness and damping properties, as well as solid-state actuators, due to their recovery capabilities.

Summary Introduction Separation (fracture) of endodontic instruments in the root canal during chemomechanical instrumentation is a complication that can compromise the final outcome of endodontic treatment. One of the most common factors that cause fatigue of endodontic instruments and consequent fracture is surface corrosion. The aim of this study was to investigate the ultrastructure of surface corrosion of endodontic instruments made of stainless steel and nickel-titanium after immersion in the most commonly used root canal irrigants. Material and Methods The study included 48 nickel-titanium and stainless steel endodontic hand files. All instruments were immersed in 5.25% sodium hypochlorite, 0.2% CHX and 17% EDTA. Surface corrosion was analyzed using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Results Nickel-titanium instruments showed significantly higher susceptibility to corrosion after immersion in 5.25% sodium hypochlorite compared to stainless steel instruments (p<0,001). After immersion in 0.2% CHX corrosion damage was observed on both nickel-titanium and stainless steel instruments but the difference was not statistically significant (p=0.096). No corrosion was observed in both types of instruments after immersion in 17% EDTA. Conclusion The use of 5.25% NaOCl and 0.2% CHX as root canal irrigating solutions can cause serious corrosion changes on the surface of nickel-titanium and stainless steel endodontic instruments.

Streszczenie:
Nickel-titanium alloy are extensively used in engineering and biomedical fields for their excellent properties of shape-memory, super-elasticity and biocompatibility. Their fatigue performance has been attracted increasingly attention, because they are often used under cyclic conditions. In this paper, the ultrasonic fatigue behavior of nickel-titanium endodontic files under unconstrained condition has been studied using the self-designed ultrasonic fatigue testing equipment. The vibration and harmonious response properties of nickel-titanium endodontic files are also analyzed using finite element method. Experimental results show that the average ultrasonic fatigue life of nickel-titanium endodontic files under unconstrained conditions is more than 108. Fracture of the files always occurred at the position about 2 -3 mm near the file tip. Results of finite element analysis show that the maximum stress of the nickel-titanium endodontic files located at the position about 2 -3 mm near the file tip, where is prone to generate fatigue cracks. The results of finite element analysis are consistent with the experimental results. The scanning electronic microscope (SEM) results show that the ultrasonic fatigue cracks always initiated at the surfaces of the files, where the secondary phases or impurities existed and induced fatigue cracks under repeated stress.

An important step towards the development of reticular endorotesis was the introduction and use of modern super-elastic material based on nickel-titanium. The article is devoted to a new way to solve one of the urgent problems of surgery. The experiment proved the possibility of an intraperitoneal method of disposing of a nickel-mesh titanium implant based on titanium nickelide modified by auto-coupling tissue in artificially created defects of the anterior abdominal wall, and anti-adhesive properties of the combined mesh material are shown. In the experiment, performed a series of experiments on 33 rabbits of the Chinchilla breed. Animals were divided into 3 groups of 11 animals each. The experiment included 2 stages. In the first part, netting of nickelide titanium implant was performed in the posterior pelvic limb of the animal. The second stage was carried out by replacing the artificially created defect of the anterior abdominal wall with a mesh implant based on titanium nickelide modified with connective tissue. The use of super-elastic reticular nickel-titanium implants in combination with an auto-connecting tissue will, with a high degree of effectiveness, replace the lost structures of the anterior abdominal wall in patients with postoperative ventral hernias.
