CO2CRC, in collaboration with the University of Melbourne and the University of New South Wales, is testing two novel CO2 capture technologies designed for both on-shore and off-shore natural gas applications in a state-of-the-art experimental capture rig at CO2CRC’s Otway National Research Facility. The goal is to develop robust and compact technology for high pressure natural gas separation over a range of adjusted high CO2 concentrations mimicking various gas field conditions. These technologies would facilitate developing new gas fields to recover methane in a cost-effective manner which is currently uneconomical with conventional technologies. In the first stage of testing, commercially available materials (adsorbents and membranes) were used for benchmarking. Results from both adsorbent and membrane technologies are encouraging with respect to recovery and purity of CO2 and methane with the prospect of commercial application.

A wind driven ventilator is a simple, cost-effective and environmentally-friendly device that can improve comfort and the working environment. Unfortunately very little is known about the complex flow field associated with the operation of this device. A wind tunnel investigation of the flow associated with a rotating wind ventilator was, therefore, carried out at the aerodynamic laboratory of the University of New South Wales within the Reynolds number range of 1.1 times 105 to 5.5 times 105. An attempt was also made to study some of the important features associated with operation of a rotating wind ventilator using a simple model of a stationary and a spinning cylinder. The results were encouraging and several flow features were identified for future improvement in the performance of a wind ventilator.

Teachers were sampled from seven secondary schools located in Western Sydney. Subjects were provided with a questionnaire pertaining to educational, professional and computing backgrounds, and attitudes toward computers. Results show teachers' use of computers to be influenced by attitudes toward computers as well as factors such as teachers' computer skill, their involvement in formal training, and their access to computers outside of school. Gender issues were examined and while some effect was found, the effect was not consistent across all variables. The results of the inferential analysis were used to formulate a causal model, the purpose of which was to explain further the relationship between teachers' attitudes toward computers and computer use

Streszczenie:
The main purpose of this dissertation is to analyse why three New South Wales primary schools were successful in implementing and managing educational technology. Responding to this research focus four specific questions were considered: Why have these schools been successful in implementing and managing educational technology? What factors have helped and/or hindered the successful implementation and management of educational technology within the selected schools? What are the indicators of successful implementation of educational technology? What were the particular contributions of leadership to the successful implementation and management of educational technology within the selected schools? This qualitative research study is based on the assumption that valuable data are gathered by studying schools that have been successful with the implementation and management of technology. In particular, the study provided a description and analysis of the best practice in three New South Wales Primary schools that had successfully implemented and managed educational technology. An interactive and cyclical process of data analysis was employed with data collection, data analysis and theory development proceeding simultaneously. To reduce and display data gathered from in-depth interviews, document study and non- participant observation the qualitative data analysis program QSR NUD*IST was utilised. The development and validation of the study’s conceptual framework shaped the study leading to the formulation of the SupportIF Model of Implementation. This model posits that success with implementation and management of educational technology is closely related to the level of interdependence between the implementation factors. The study results also endorsed the prime importance of a supportive work environment in each of the studied schools and linked this environment to the level of success realised with the implementation and management of technology and the utilisation of educational technology to enhance the achievement of student learning outcomes. The study contends that the sustainability of a school based technology initiative rests with a school’s ability to dynamically balance the key implementation factors and to redesign in light of shared practice. Tantamount to this process is a supportive work environment in each school which is the critical variable that facilitates interdependence between leadership, resources, relationships and teaching and learning factors.

Liu, Margaret Ze-Yu. "Energy efficiency retrofits of tertiary education buildings: An investigation of case studies in New South Wales". Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/16336.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
Improving the energy efficiency of existing building stock has been acknowledged as one of the most critical environmental challenges facing the building industry. However, the efficacy of such retrofits in improving energy efficiency has not been comprehensively explored. Existing tertiary education buildings have been particularly underserved by previous research in this area. Previous methods for evaluating the impact of retrofits, for the most part, measured the differences between annual energy consumption immediately before and after the retrofit. Monitoring energy consumption in previous case studies has generally been limited to the initial 12 -18 months post-retrofit. The longer-term impact of energy efficiency retrofits on energy trends has not been adequately examined. This renders most reported figures on the impact of retrofit on energy consumption unreliable, or limited at best, as they fail to allow enough time for retrofitted systems to reach their peak efficiency. The lack of long-term monitoring in the post-retrofit period may have been due to perceived difficulties in keeping track of the many variables in a particular building, both building-related and occupant-related, for extended periods. The lack of sub-metering in many buildings added another layer of complexity in determining retrofit impact, as it restricted assessment to only a broad energy trend analysis, rather than a precise measurement. In addition, there were insufficient suitable energy-use-intensity (EUI) benchmarks against which to assess energy consumption, given each building’s unique mix of space use. A total of 12 case studies from 4 tertiary education institutions in New South Wales were investigated in this study. The retrofit scope predominately involved works in HVAC (heating and cooling) and lighting, the two leading areas of energy use in an average university building. Most of the retrofit cases involved both active and passive systems, with active systems being the majority of the work scope. A preliminary building space audit was carried out for each case study to establish the size and percentage of spaces allocated to each use. Each space category was allocated with a low and a high EUI benchmark, amalgamated from existing literature. This range was then weighted according to the percentage of space use to form a customised EUI range for each building. The pre- and post-retrofit EUIs of the building were then measured against 4 the benchmarks to indicate their relative performance. The result of the preliminary audit established a broad metric of each building’s general energy performance, given its space composition. The data analysis component of this study consists of two parts: an energy trend analysis and a multivariate regression analysis. The energy trend analysis offers a broad view of energy variations against seven energy-related parameters: energy cost, campus-wide consumption, mean external temperature, heating degree days, cooling degree days, total degree days and daylight hours. The multivariate regression analysis is a comprehensive assessment of variations in the regression relationship between energy and following five parameters: mean external temperature, heating degree days, cooling degree days, total degree days and daylight hours. The combination of these two analyses offered detailed insight into the behaviour of the retrofitted systems and their interaction with external environmental variables. The results suggest that although energy usage seemed to have decreased in most cases, there were many issues that eroded the gains in energy efficiency over the long term. This brought to light the many complex and sometimes conflicting interests involved in retrofitting. There were significant gaps between the case study EUIs and the current industry benchmarks that are considered best practice for existing tertiary education buildings. The results from investigating the EUI benchmarks in turn raised questions about the feasibility of some current standards and suggest the need for a set of achievable benchmarks in current retrofit practice. Buildings in the tertiary education sector are some of the most varied and complex of all existing building stock. As the case studies in this thesis were considered to be a subset of commercial buildings, this research and its findings contribute to our understanding of energy efficiency not just in tertiary education buildings, but also in commercial buildings and the built environment at large.

Streszczenie:
AbstractThis chapter reviews the representation of climate change in performing and visual arts over the past ten years, canvassing the aesthetic exploration of the climate emergency in selected international works by surveying emergent narrative themes, key dramaturgical shifts and aesthetic strategies. Discussing the limitations of anthropocentric conventions, it investigates innovative approaches and their capability to generate knowledge about the dynamics of Earth processes and humanity’s embeddedness and interference with them. Looking to novel experimental work currently in development at The University of New South Wales (UNSW)’s iCinema Research Centre, we speculate how these emergent aesthetics may be further developed to augment the arts’s capability to deepen insight and strengthen preparedness in a rapidly transforming world.

Streszczenie:
During some time now the application of the so called AXE Bow has proven very successful. Typical applications so far have been as Fast Crew Suppliers in the Offshore industry, as Patrol Boats with Coast Guards and SAR boats all in the range of 50 till 20 meter length overall and speeds ranging from 25 to 35 knots. Applying the AXE Bow Concept on smaller boats than 15 meter length overall is a challenge, because minimal stability requirements generally ask for a smaller L/B ratio and so beamier ships. On the other end application on frigate type hulls, which have generally a rather high L/B ratio and already fine bow could be considered less advantageous because high vertical accelerations, bow slamming and added resistance in head waves are already relatively small. In an earlier study commissioned by the Netherlands, Italian and Danish navies some 10 years ago (the THALES Project reported in Ref [1]) the application of the Enlarged Ship Concept and the AXE Bow Concept on a frigate type hull were already considered but only on a limited scale. Over the last decade a large amount of design information has been gathered from the experience gained from full scale measurements on board of real AXE Bow ships. This refers amongst others to increased directional stability particular in following waves by applying fixed skegs and so reduced rudder motions to be applied, the possibility to vary and increase the maneuverability at wish by making these skegs retractable (Ref [2]), a reduced added resistance in waves and considerably less shipping of green water when sailing in head waves. All these aspects led to the question raised when the replacement of the presently employed “M Frigate” of the Royal Netherlands Navy came in sight whether the application of the AXE Bow Concept on the new frigate would be a desirable and feasible option. The main question to be addressed by the present research was How does the Conventional Frigate hull type compare to the AXE Bow hull with respect to: the calm water resistance, taking on green water, the behavior in stern quartering waves, and the maneuverability. These research questions were formulated and the project commissioned by the DAMEN Shipyard at Gorinchem, Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding and the Defense Material Organization from the Ministry of Defense of the Netherlands to the Ship Hydromechanics Department of the Delft University of Technology. An extensive research plan including a large test program has been set up to investigate the behavior of both designs, both in the towing tank of the Delft University and from MARIN at Wageningen and also on open water on an estuary in the south with radio controlled models. Part of the measurements were conducted on open water to be able to carry out turning circles at various forward speeds and rudder angles. Also for the tests in following and stern quartering waves the addition of open water tests seemed essential to gather sufficient statistically reliable results on rarely occurring events such as broaching. The main results of this research project will be reported in this paper.

ANZSOG is collaborating with the Queensland Public Service (QPS) and the Centre for Social Impact (CSI) at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) on a research project to address system-wide challenges of leadership development, including career transitions and generational transformation in the context of capability planning for the QPS. This interim evidence review compares leadership enablement approaches from across several jurisdictions, as well as gathering insights on QPS’s existing leadership foundations. It found that traditional leadership frameworks, such as the existing QPS framework, tend to outline a ‘one-size fits all’ pathway for leadership and describe a linear set of steps to progress up the leadership ladder. As an alternative, and a precursor for QPS, it presents a well-researched and developed framework (the Wallace 2D framework) which uses a relationship-focused leadership approach to provide better opportunities for all workers in QPS to thrive through progression up the leadership ladder.

Streszczenie:
Stress corrosion cracking (SCC) poses a serious threat to aging underground cathodically protected gas pipelines. As coatings deteriorate, conditions suitable for corrosion and SCC become more common. There have been many ruptures throughout the world attributed to SCC. One of the most important steps in combating failure by SCC is regular, reliable and cost effective monitoring of pipelines. Current methods available (including hydrotesting and magnetic particle testing) are either expensive, time consuming, or not entirely reliable. Regular testing of pipelines and the detailed study of the results will improve the understanding of SCC initiation and propagation. This project evaluates a manual ultrasonic scanning system for detecting SCC in pipelines. This system was used to inspect the lower circumferential section of unpressurized lengths of the Moomba to Sydney gas transmission pipeline operated by The Pipeline Authority (TPA). The manual system successfully located SCC colonies. CWP, in association with The University of Newcastle, then developed a microprocessor controlled system based on piezoelectric wheel probe technology. This system was trialled in Peterborough, South Australia in May 1990. Following the awarding of this research project (PR-198-9108). CWP incorporated the development work into their core business with the creation of the Product Development Section. This section was entirely committed to the development of the system and the PRC project. The redesign of the system included EMAT technology. Although not new, EMATs had not previously been made available to the gas industry in the detection of SCC. This project involved in excess of 13500 development man hours over a 22 month period. This report describes the development of the system and the Newcastle field trials, the Australian field trials and the USA field trials concluding in September 1992. The report also addresses the suitability of each technology in detecting SCC in buriednatural gas pipeline and makes design recommendations for the future. Future developments in the system are planned in the areas of enhancing the reliable detection of SCC, imaging of SCC and enhanced calibration capabilities.

Exploring the Prospects of Using 3D Printing Technology in the South African Human Settlements. Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf), 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.17159/assaf.2021/0074.

Streszczenie:
South Africa is a country with significant socio-economic development challenges, with the majority of South Africans having limited or non-existent access to basic infrastructure, services, housing and socio-economic opportunities etc. The urban housing backlog currently exceeds 2.4 million houses, with many families living in informal settlements. The Breaking New Grounds Policy, 2014 for the creation of sustainable human settlements, acknowledges the challenges facing human settlements, such as, decreasing human settlements grants allocation, increasing housing backlog, mushrooming of informal settlements and urbanisation. The White Paper on Science, Technology and Innovation (STI), 2019 notes that South Africa has not yet fully benefited from the potential of STI in addressing the socio-economic challenges and seeks to support the circular economy principles which entail a systematic change of moving to a zero or low waste resource-efficient society. Further to this, the Science and Technology Roadmap’s intention is to unlock the potential of South Africa’s human settlements for a decent standard of living through the smart uptake of science, technology and innovation. One such novel technology is the Three-Dimensional (3D) printing technology, which has produced numerous incredible structures around the world. 3D printing is a computer-controlled industrial manufacturing process which encompasses additive means of production to create 3D shapes. The effects of such a technology have a potential to change the world we live in and could subsequently pave the roadmap to improve on housing delivery and reduce the negative effects of conventional construction methods on the environment. To this end, the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf), in partnership with the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) and the University of Johannesburg (UJ) hosted the second virtual IID seminar titled: Exploring the Prospects of Using 3D Printing Technology in the South African Human Settlements, on 01 March 2021 to explore the potential use of 3D printing technology in human settlements. The webinar presented preliminary findings from a study conducted by UJ, addressing the following topics: 1. The viability of 3D printing technology 2. Cost comparison of 3D printed house to conventional construction 3. Preliminary perceptions on 3D printing of houses Speakers included: Dr Jennifer Mirembe (NDoHS), Dr Jeffrey Mahachi, Mr Refilwe Lediga, Mr Khululekani Ntakana and Dr Luxien Ariyan, all from UJ. There was a unanimous consensus that collaborative efforts from all stakeholders are key to take advantage of this niche technology. @ASSAf_Official; @dsigovza; @go2uj; @The_DHS; #SA 3D_Printing; #3D Print_Housing; #IID
