Tanya Saracho’s El Nogalar (2011), adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard, recreates the Russian’s play social context in 21st century Mexican society, going through the awakening of the violence that dominates the U.S./Mexico border. The focus of this study is the audience’s response to El Nogalar premier at the Goodman’s theater. Such analysis is conducted by reading the paratextual elements, such as the program and related material found online. By analyzing the script, playbill, reviews, and the study guide, this study calls for an increased use of supplemental material in order to critically think about audience reception. The complexity of the play, as an adaptation alone, is enough to justify the need for more knowledge of non-traditional methods to approach the text and the surrounding material, including reviews, playbills and educational guides. These elements not only provide new insight into interpreting the performance and dramatic text, but they also offer ways to approach audience reception beyond the review.

Reading is a crucial skill that any student must incorporate into their daily routine. By engaging in reading, you can get new knowledge, and you can increase your level of concern for your social well-being through reading. But at State Islamic University of Nort Sumatera, particularly among the Student, the reading program is rather erratic. Compared to reading a book, student more frequently uses the internet to search for educational information and materials. This suggests that at UINSU, bias is not yet a way of life, and bias among UINSU women is more persistently expressed in their viewing of television programs and dramatic readings on gaming console. Because of this, Literasi room had to reappear in order to provide the student with renewed inspiration to read. It is anticipated that this Literal Component will be an effective solution to address the issue of Minat Baca in the student community.

Many intermediate and advanced ESL learners, adults particularly, have specific needs in reading, needs which existing instructional materials do not properly address. This paper discusses a curriculum development project undertaken by teachers dissatisfied with the program used for teaching reading in an advanced level ESL course. Certain inadequacies were recognized in the program. Selections were not representative of material students would be likely to read, and exercises dealt only marginally with reading skills. The steps taken by teachers resulted in a major re-orientation to reading instruction. Based on findings yielded by a survey of learners and a study of recent literature, instructional objectives were established in two areas: a) skills to be developed and b) text-types to be presented. Following that, texts were selected, and skill-oriented exercises were developed. After classroom trials, the materials were implemented in the advanced course as a new reading program, and a system for ongoing revision was organized. In describing developmental procedures and sample materials, this paper provides working guidelines for handling problems relating to the teaching of reading.

Streszczenie:
Reading fluency is considered critical in skillful reading in that many reading training tools are developed for improving the fluency. Most of the tools are computer-based applications with a screen-based interface to provide multimedia learning environment. However, many students still prefer using paper materials especially for reading activities because of many familiar experiences of learning with a pen and paper. Also, many studies indicate that paper still plays an important role especially in reading activities. For addressing the issue, a paper-based digital pen with digital functions is used in paper materials for assisting in reading, and a novel fluency intervention program is designed in the hope of being easily and fully incorporated into regular classrooms for helping students achieve reading fluency. An actual study incorporating this fluency program was carried out in an English course in a regular EFL classroom in Taiwan. During the course, students were able to use the digital pen to interact paper materials for one-on-one digital support, including playing a model of fluent reading, recording their independent practice and playing back such recordings for confirmation. Thereby, the students required minimum behavior changes during learning and were able to have significant opportunities to practice each major component of fluency program in a comfortable and assisted way and thus to improve their reading fluency. Because of the intervention program being new to the teacher and students, the repertory grid technique was further applied as a tool for eliciting precise understanding of the students’ preferences toward the program. Finally, the teacher was able to give suggestions and advices to the students during the learning activities and thus this approach effectively helped the students make substantial gains in reading fluency.

This study attempts to reveal how the use of critical pedagogy principles in teaching English as a Foreign Language (EFL) reading facilitates students to think critically. Additionally, it investigates and elaborates the benefits and challenges of using critical pedagogy principles in teaching EFL reading. The three critical pedagogy principles used in this study were dialogic education, democratic classroom, and reading the world and the word. Critical thinking skills and dispositions expected to be performed by the participants were analysis and evaluation skills, open-mindedness, and making reasoned decision. This is a case study design which was conducted in the form of teaching program. The teaching program which consisted of eight meetings was given to 59 EFL sophomores in the Reading in Professional Context class at a private teacher education in Bandung. Data in the form of classroom talks and activities and students‟ responses as well as their critical thinking skills self-assessment were collected by using video recordings, observation notes, interview guideline, students‟ learning journals, and questionnaires. It is revealed that the teaching program has facilitated students to think critically by providing four categories of activity. They are (1) offering problematic topics and reading materials that are linked to the students‟ lives, (2) encouraging students to read between the lines, (3) distributing classroom power, and (4) creating space for students‟ voices to be heard. Meanwhile, there are two benefits of the teaching program, namely (1) language development and (2) new knowledge as well as experience acquisition. However, there are three major challenges in conducting the teaching program that are (1) the lack of classroom-friendly authentic controversial reading materials, (2) the passive culture, and (3) the unpredictable classroom. Keywords: critical pedagogy principles, critical thinking skills, EFL reading class

Academic readings are meaningful and useful sources for academic writing. Both of them are inextricably intertwined. Postgraduate students need to read a lot of academic reading in order to get new insight and knowledge that will be useful for writing academic journals. In order to be successful in reading academic materials, postgraduate students need to apply metacognitive strategies. One of them is being self-regulated learners. There are many factors that promote good self-regulation. Two of them are motivation and volition. Using a mixed-methods explanatory framework, this research aimed to investigate how postgraduates self-regulate themselves in academic readings and to what extent motivational and volitional factors contribute to postgraduate students’ self-regulation in academic reading. The data was gathered through questionnaires completed by 31 postgraduate students and interviews with four chosen students. The findings found that most postgraduate students have motivational and volitional factors that influence their reading habits. It was shown that postgraduate students attributed self-regulated learning to their academic reading. Additionally, it was revealed that self-regulated learning showed a positive, significant, and moderate correlation with motivation (r=.355) as well as a positive, significant, and moderate correlation with volition (r=.456). The study found that academic reading requires postgraduate students to have strong self-regulated learning, motivation, and volitional strategies. Even though the results of the measurement were relatively positive, help from others was still needed, such as from the universities and master’s program lecturers, especially when it came to encouraging students to establish self-regulated learning habits. This study may be useful to the university and master’s program lecturers.

Over the past century, materials have faced notoriously long delays between invention and commercialization. These delays make private investment very difficult, and can prevent good materials from reaching markets. A systematic exploration of the commercial histories of major commodity thermoplastics was performed, which showed that these delays were attributable to technical deficiencies in materials and obstacles in the application value chains. Contrary to popular wisdom, material costs, competitive materials, and serendipity were much smaller factors in commercialization delay. The factors that led to insertion of plastics into applications were different from the factors that led to post-insertion growth. The major plastics showed a characteristic pattern of commercialization. First, they entered simple, small applications in which they solved new problems. They then progressed to achieve insertion in a single major application, which they continue to dominate today. Having established themselves with this application, they found insertion in a wide range of large applications. The commercialization pattern can be explained in large part by the concept of switching costs. As knowledge of a material increases, switching costs are reduced; as value chain complexity increases, switching costs increase. The earliest applications required little understanding of plastics and had simple value chains, so switching costs were low, corresponding to fast commercialization. Later applications had more complex value chains and required much more detailed understanding of the failure modes and processing parameters of the material, corresponding to high switching costs and slow commercialization. Materials can be deployed into
(cont.) many markets. By strategically selecting application markets, materials producers can significantly improve the probability that new materials will be adopted and can shorten the period of commercialization. Early markets should be selected based on the ability of the material to solve unique problems and the simplicity of the application value chain. When market selection is not an option, materials producers can integrate forward in the value chain to shorten commercialization times, but capital requirements are very high. Once integrated into an application, the safest competitive position for materials is to be the lowest cost option that meets the exact needs of the application.

The need for computer science education is greater than ever. There are currently over 500,000 unfilled computer science jobs in the United States and many schools do not teach computer science in their classrooms. Computers are powerful tools, and computational thinking-skills of problem-solving, logic, and abstraction that form the foundation of computer science-can be applied across other disciplines. Many current approaches to computer science education use computer screens. Though computer science education is important and effective from a young age, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends we limit screen time in children; and research shows that excessive screen time is detrimental for a child's development. A 2006 research study by Angeline Lillard published in Science showed that Montessori students scored higher on academic, cognitive, social, and behavioral tests than students in a traditional elementary school setting. The Montessori Method is characterized by mixed-age classrooms, child-driven learning, and a series of sensorial, physical materials. Developed nearly 100 years ago by Dr. Maria Montessori, the Montessori curriculum does not explicitly include computer science in its curriculum. This research examines the Montessori Method as a way to teach computer science for early childhood education. Interpreting and extending Dr. Montessori's original pedagogy, I have developed a curriculum with new learning materials for young children that breaks down the fundamentals of computational thinking into a set of discrete concepts that are expressed in tactile, hands-on ways. This research evaluates this approach through direct observation and teacher feedback; and suggests the potential for this Method as an effective approach to teach computational concepts to young children.

Reading Recovery is a widely disseminated, replicable, early intervention program for the lowest performing first-grade students. Originally, Marie Clay and colleagues constructed Reading Recovery in New Zealand on the base of broad research from the 1970’s and onwards. It utilizes a uniform lesson framework and extensive professional development to help already successful teachers make individual, instructional decisions designed to accelerate the literacy learning of the selected children within one-to-one, 30-minute daily lessons. The children are stimulated to learn to read and write by reading and writing. Short stories are used and writing activities are connected to reading. Emphasis is on teachers guiding children to be independent and learn metacognitive strategies.

Reading Recovery students are identified for services based on teachers’ recommendations and the students’ performances on the Observation Survey of Early Literacy Achievement, with a number of wide-ranging assessments. Usually, students who score at or below the 20th percentile on the survey at a particular school are provided the intervention.

The fundamental purpose of the program is to reduce the number of students who have severe difficulty developing literacy skills and to reduce the cost of educating them. A majority of the Reading Recovery students do reach the intended goals and in international comparative studies New Zealand usually is among the top ranking countries in reading.

All my interviewees testified of the great advantages of Reading Recovery and, according to my conclusions, actual practice is well correlated with theory.

The cost of repairing cracked concrete is expensive as it requires special repair materials and skilled labour. Thus, the developments of new materials, like self-healing materials, are highly needed to repair cracks automatically and to restore or even increase concretes' strength to prolong its service life. The aim of this chapter was to investigate the performance of epoxy resin without hardener as a self-healing agent in mortar. A detailed introduction of self-healing mortar is given followed by a problem statement. The epoxy resin as a self-healing material is also explained briefly. Self-healing concept is also discussed in detail followed by the experimental program. Results revealed that the epoxy resin without hardener as a healing agent performed effectively as the compressive strength and ultrasonic pulse velocity of 365 days old cracked mortar samples regained the initial reading with prolonged curing time.

There has been a shift in receiving countries and their education programs for adult immigrants around the world. A complete focus on immigrants' cultural integration and learning of the language of the country has shifted to an understanding that supporting heritage language maintenance benefits adults with little or no formal schooling in that language, including a more nuanced sense of identity, stronger second language (L2) and literacy learning, and confidence in supporting the schooling of the younger members of their communities. Teachers and tutors need, but lack, professional development focused on implementing instructional approaches that incorporate this new focus and on using reading materials in learners' languages. This chapter describes a new Online Heritage Language Resource Hub, which gives teachers, tutors, adult learners, and younger members of the community access to materials in hundreds of immigrants' languages. It also provides teachers ways to use the reading materials in the Hub in their classes with adult learners.

This chapter begins with an overview of network analysis concepts and measures. Those readers who are new to the area, or who are familiar with the social theories described in this book but not with network analysis itself, should find a careful reading of the first section of this chapter to be essential in understanding the remainder of the chapter and book. Network analysis has become a fairly technical topic, and there are a number of concepts, measures, and analytic strategies that require careful explication. This section of the chapter should provide sufficient background in network analysis to enable an informed reading of the network literature. We hasten to emphasize, however, that it is only a brief introduction. Hence, like all other introductory materials, an attempt is made to trade-off conceptual rigor with simplicity. An extensive literature exists on network analysis, including several fine texts and a number of excellent review chapters. Those who wish to explore further the network analysis material presented in the first third of this chapter should consult the sources in the references that we have identified under “Relations in a World of Attributes.” Those who are more familiar with network analysis will find the first section of this chapter less important. A quick skim should provide ample insight into our selection and use of concepts and definitions. The second section introduces the MTML framework. It shows how various network properties at different levels of analysis can represent the generative mechanisms from different social theories. It also shows how combining theories can provide broader explanations of emergent networks than each theory can alone. As a part of that framework we introduce the statistical ideas pertaining to realizations of a graph and discuss p* analytic strategies and the PSPAR computer program that can be used to analyze relevant data. This section concludes with an extended presentation of the MTML model, which broadly classifies variables into endogenous and exogenous factors, each with multiple levels. Examples are provided for each of the ten classes of hypotheses generated by this framework.

Streszczenie:
This paper is about transformations from knowing to not-knowing and from doing to becoming. The paper’s focus is an ongoing research project on a new Doctorate program in Modern Languages studies (DML) and the process that the students in this program undergo when transitioning from being practitioners to becoming novice scholars. This program is part of a conscious effort to create an academic field whereby scholarly and professional types of knowledge are organically co-produced and this interlaced knowledge is expected to fertilize practitioners’ professional practices. The program’s graduate students are mostly in their mid-career and are motivated to pursue their DML studies for multiple reasons. The necessity of developing a study plan that can foster their transition from practitioners to scholars and help them develop a researcher identity became evident early on. Students were expected to quickly re-adjust their self-image as future theorizers who could carry out independent research and produce original scholarship. While the challenges mentioned above are not unique to this specific doctorate program and are well documented in the extensive scholarship on doctorate students’ education, fewer studies have addressed the particular challenges faculty and students face as part of the latter’s transition from practitioners to graduate students and novice researchers. Therefore, we ask, what accounts for a successful process of supporting language teachers in becoming novice researchers? Our aim is twofold: first, to detail our pedagogical rationale, dilemmas we faced, and the solutions we carved out; and secondly, to contribute to a nascent discussion on doctorate students’ training and academic socialization in applied disciplines. Using Mezirow’s adult learning theory of Transformative Learning, we describe the challenge of designing a process of academic socialization that can support adult learners’ development and shift in perceptions, skills, and actions. During the first four cohorts of the program, in an introductory course, “Research Foundations,” we faced dilemmas regarding reading materials and teaching activities, and collected students' reflections and communications with us, the course professors. Accordingly, the paper explicitly emphasizes our efforts to actively foster a culture of independent learning and a productive learning community by introducing new knowledge and skills. The paper can benefit instructors who design and lead graduate programs for practitioners in any field of practice.

Streszczenie:
"This paper reports on findings from a U.S. federally-funded research project involving American universities that created online courses to develop Jordanian K-12 English teachers’ instructional strategies and communication skills who are employed in disadvantaged or vulnerable rural and urban schools. The four innovative, online courses address Jordanian English teachers’ desire to motivate learners (Al-efeshat & Baniabdelrahman, 2020), develop students’ critical reading skills (Bataineh & Al-Shbatat, 2018), reduce students’ reading anxiety (Al-Shboul et at., 2013), and foster metacognitive reading strategies (Alsarayreh, 2020) among other challenges. Studies have found that increasing mobile technologies to students and teachers and integrating basic technology in public and refugee schools would profoundly impact the scope of learning and instruction (UNESCO, 2018; UNHRC, 2018). Further, research on teacher quality shows that weaknesses in teachers’ pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) and classroom practice undermine effective student learning and achievement (Phetla & Newman, 2020; Pontefract and Hardman 2005). Continuing professional development and PCK positively impact schools and embodies the ability to evaluate students thinking, plan appropriate learning opportunities, and modify, combine, and use instructional materials to develop conceptual understanding (Darling-Hammond et al., 1999). Teachers’ professional development through teachers’ collaboration has been reported to be effective for the improvement of schools’ performance and students’ learning outcomes in all curriculum subjects. Research repeatedly demonstrates that continuing professional development makes a difference to teachers’ pedagogic knowledge and skill which is reflected in enhanced student learning outcomes (AL-Wreikat & Bin Abdullah, 2010; Mahmoud, 2015). This project seeks to narrow these gaps and positively impact learning outcomes and student competencies through the innovative online and in-person PDP with Jordanian teachers of English. Using gathered qualitative and quantitative data, we identify the program’s impact on TEFL teachers’ integrated service learning projects and culturally relevant pedagogies to positively affected students’ learning, advanced teachers’ knowledge of research-based instructional strategies, and addressed other challenges identified by the teachers. We will also share the process for selecting teachers to participate in the program and collaborations we developed with international stakeholders."

The Graeco-Roman theatre of Catania stands in the heart of the historic centre, on the south-eastern slopes of the hill of Montevergine. The building visible today was built during the Julio-Claudian period as part of a programme that saw the rebuilding of the monument, which probably used structures and materials from the earlier Greek theatre. The work undertaken over more than fifty years, involving expropriation, demolition, excavation, and restoration, has, on the whole, made it possible to bring to light the surviving parts of the theatre, improving the comprehension of this monument, despite the fact that some sectors have been irreparably compromised.

The quality improvement is essential for every textile enterprise. The optimization of quality could be possible only by using the best materials. The quality of products for customer reflects the materials used in factory, the cycle of production, the processing of each technological line and also the maintenance of machines on the entire technological line. If one of these criterions is neglected, the quality expected by the customer won't be the optimal one. The notion of optimization is adopted relative because the company will be able to secure better materials, to hire a larger staff, to replace the parts of the machines more often. Only these measures will improve the quality, but the real rise of costs could catapult the company out from the market. The lab and the technical service have to be capable of supervising the whole cycle of production in different ways. The success of improving will be assured only by learning the causes of different imperfections of semi-finished products and goods. The main objective is the control of the causes and not of the effects. It is also necessary to out run the primary data a little over the general informing level. The statistics methods permit the value of every individual characteristic on each fabrication cycle. When the fabrication cycle is improved the statistic limits are also more precise. The STATTEX program is very useful for physical and mechanical labs for determination of the fibers physical-mechanical characteristics while the reception on new materials is done, for determination of the semi-finished products characteristics and also for processing of the data from analysis report elaborated for each 3000 kg lot of fibers or any time when it's necessary. The STATTEX program solved the following problems: - Reading of experimental data; - Arrangements of the pool data; - Elimination of the aberrant values using the Dixon or Grubbs tests depending on the sample volume and after then their visualization; - Presents a report for the remaining values; - Lists this report on printer; - Calculates the valid values and their classification; - Testing the concordance between experimental and normal distribution by using the concordance c2 or the Kolmogorov-Smirnov tests depending on sample volume; - Allows the option for listing a report on printer which contains the helping table for the concordance tests; - Graphic representations: - The histogram - The polygon of the relative frequencies - The polygon of the absolute frequencies - The diagram of the cumulate frequencies - Allows the option to list the graphic representations on the printer - Calculates the typical poll values (arithmetical average, median line, mood value, amplitude, dispersion, the average square deviation, the coefficient of variation, the absolute average deviation, the coefficient of linear irregularity, the coefficient of asymmetry, the coefficient of vaulting and the excess); - Allows the option for listing the VTS report that contains the typical poll values calculated previously for interpreting the results.

Abstract Milwaukee School of Engineering’s Mechanical Engineering Department, having successfully completed the accreditation of the ME program in 2018–19 under the prior a through k student outcomes, dedicated the program meetings during academic year 2019–20 to develop assessment instruments in transitioning to the new ABET Student Outcomes 1–7. By deliberately involving the entire faculty to participate in the development of instruments, a grassroots level discussion and creation ensued for each outcome. The process is showcased in this paper for Student Outcome 4 on ethics as a model to share with our engineering faculty and to highlight salient features in the developed instrument and associated rubrics. The details of performance indicators interwoven across the curriculum and the methods of data collection are provided in a tabular form for ease of expectation and implementation. How the readily available materials from the National Society of Professional Engineers could be incorporated at early years of the baccalaureate program while the outcome’s performance indicators could be assessed at a deeper level during junior and senior years are showcased in this paper. The periodic dialogue among all colleagues who were working on various outcomes ensured proper communication of what one outcome group is prescribing that we do and receive input from those who are involved with the courses in which the data needed to be collected and the performance indicators are to be assessed. The general structure of our standing committees on freshman courses, energy, mechanics, and controls also provided the cushion to review the assessment instruments and provide constructive feedback from the corresponding committee’s perspective. These details of a very interactive Student Outcomes Assessment process will be presented.

Streszczenie:
In higher education subjects are traditionally taught in the form of lectures, where teachers are required by the curriculum to cover a certain amount of content in order to prepare their students for subsequent courses or examinations. It has been observed that people struggle when they are required to memorize a lot of new information, this phenomenon is explained by the working memory theory [1], and the negative effect is amplified when teaching subjects like programming, with the links between categories of information that has to be memorized not clearly identifiable by beginners. Lecture material for programming courses often mixes language-specific information (keywords, syntactical rules, ready solutions), mathematical basis for a given solution (type theory, algorithm theory), hardware-specific limitations (computer memory management) etc. This often has drastic consequences for students’ success in later courses that rely on material from previous courses [2]. This paper argues, that the process of learning is not simply about transferring knowledge from teacher to student. In fact, knowledge does not have to be “existing in an objective manner” for subsequent transmission, it can also be “built in a constructive manner by the learner" [3]. Within a traditional educational process software engineering students find themselves in situations where text is used to reason about other forms of text: typically code examples are shown first, then the code’s structure and syntax are explained. While there is intrinsic value in reading code written by experts, reading explanations of that code is much less effective than trying to reason about the structure and function of a program, and various features of a programming language. This paper will attempt to showcase several teaching techniques that don't utilize textual explanations (either partially or completely), putting forward the argument that non-linguistic presentations can be more effective in teaching, under certain conditions. Several methods of achieving this effect will be described, with the main goal of appealing to the student's ability for computational thinking.

New high temperature materials and improved blade cooling techniques have led 10 design of advanced models of industrial gas turbines with inlet or “firing” temperatures of 2350 degrees F. and higher. All major vendors now offer large new commercial gas turbine-generators, with outputs of 150 megawatts and higher, based on these new designs. These new turbine units offer higher overall performance and fuel efficiencies, with promise of better reliability and availability, as well as lower operating and maintenance costs. EPRI began to assess the durability of early models of these advanced gas turbines (AGT) in 1991, by closely monitoring their performance during electric utility operation. The durability surveillance program, involving several AGT installations outlined below, will be described. However, only the first two sites involving GE units have produced a substantial operating history for discussion. The latter two sites have only recently had new AGT units installed by ABB and Siemens respectively. At the time of this writing, those new units are still being readied for utility operation. Their operating history under the durability surveillance program will be monitored, and discussed in a future paper. • General Electric Gas Turbine Model MS7001F in peaking service at Potomac Electric Power Co. Station H at Dickerson, Maryland. • General Electric Gas Turbine Model MS7001FA in baseload service at Florida Power & Light Co. Martin Plant at Indiantown, Florida. • ASEA Brown Bovert Gas Turbine Model GT 24 initially in peaking service at Jersey Central Power & Light Co.(now GPU GenCo) Gilbert Station at Milford, New Jersey. • Siemens Gas Turbine Model V84.3A in peaking service at Kansas City Power & Light Co. Hawthorn Station at Kansas City, Missouri. The purpose is to determine the prospects for improved unit life cycle costs as a result of higher levels of performance, availability, reliability, and mantainability achieved by adding these engines to the industry fleet. This paper will describe the initial results from the Durability Surveillance studies, including observations from unit maintenance inspections as well as the output of advanced diagnostics and monitoring systems.

This paper assesses the effectiveness of an intervention aimed at improving the reading skills of struggling third-grade students in Colombia. In a series of randomized experiments, students participated in remedial tutorials conducted in small groups during school hours. Trained instructors used structured pedagogical materials that can be easily scaled up. Informed by the outcomes of each cohort, the intervention tools are fine-tuned for each subsequent cohort. The paper finds positive and persistent impacts on literacy scores and positive spillovers on some mathematics scores. The effectiveness of the program grew over time, likely because of higher dosage and the fine-tuning of materials.

Streszczenie:
Currently, to evaluate the dynamic characteristics of objects, quite a large number of devices are used in the form of chronographs, which consist of various optical, thermal and laser sensors. Among the problems of these devices, the following can be distinguished: the lack of recording of the received data; the inaccessibility of taking into account the trajectory of the object flying in the sensor area, as well as taking into consideration the trajectory of the object during the approach to the device frame. The signal received from the infrared sensors is recorded in a separate document in txt format, in the form of a table. When you turn to the document, data is read from the current position of the input data stream in the specified list by an argument in accordance with the given condition. As a result of reading the data, it forms an array that includes N number of columns. The array is constructed in a such way that the first column includes time values, and columns 2...N- the value of voltage . The algorithm uses cycles that perform the function of deleting array rows where there is a fact of exceeding the threshold value in more than two columns, as well as rows where the threshold level was not exceeded. The modified array is converted into two new arrays, each of which includes data from different sensor frames. An array with the coordinates of the centers of the sensor operation zones was created to apply the Pythagorean theorem in three-dimensional space, which is necessary for calculating the exact distance between the zones. The time is determined by the difference in the response of the first and second sensor frames. Knowing the path and time, we are able to calculate the exact speed of the object. For visualization, the oscillograms of each sensor channel were displayed, and a chronograph model was created. The chronograph model highlights in purple the area where the threshold has been exceeded.

This report consists of two topics: one is a summary of the pipe properties developed for pipe materials used in Project NG-18; a pipe sample storage program that has been initiated to set aside samples of virgin pipe material so that when future problems develop on pipelines, original pipe materials will be available for the conduct of research. Pipe properties from over 400 pipe lengths is contained in the pipe database. This database focuses on pipe diameters from 8 inches to 42 inches and from Grade A through Grade X100. The properties that are included are the mechanical, chemical, fracture, grain size, pipe fracture data, metallurgical data, and environmental effects data. These data were collected on pipe lengths donated to the program from 1959 to present by PRCI-member companies and pipe mills. A second part of this program was to develop a procedure for the collection and storage of short pipe lengths from new construction. The goal was to have individual PRCI companies store the pipe but records of the stored pipe properties and location. The goal is to develop a supply of pipe to so that if problems occur in future years with pipe of a similar nature original pipe will be available for study of the changes in properties during the service years.

The world is increasingly urbanized and yet, even in urban areas, humans remain dependent on the ecosystem services that nature provides. This case study-exercise explores selected aspects of the dynamic between humans and urban ecology in three parts. First, we briefly discuss urban ecosystems and the context of biodiversity conservation in urban areas. Then, through a case study of the Million Trees program in New York City, we provide evidence and start a discussion about the possible benefits—as well as potential negative social, ecological, and economic consequences—of urban trees. And finally, we introduce biodiversity conservation in urban green spaces through an exercise on native bees. After reading about the importance of, and threats to, native bees, students take on stakeholder roles to decide if their neighborhood should accept a grant to create and maintain bee habitat in an urban park. Students are tasked with conducting additional research and participating in a classroom town hall meeting to present and support their argument for or against the creation of native bee habitat.

The Government of Lao People’s Democratic Republic (Lao PDR) is undertaking significant primary education reforms, supported by the Australian Government's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) through its flagship Basic Education Quality and Access in Laos program (BEQUAL). The Australian Government has commissioned a study to investigate how the BEQUAL program is making a difference to improving teaching quality and student learning outcomes. This research is part of a multi-year study series undertaken by DFAT's Education Analytics Service to investigate teacher and learning development initiatives in three countries: Lao PDR, Timor-Leste and Vanuatu. In 2019, the new curriculum for Lao language and other subjects was introduced for Grade 1 and is being phased in across all five primary grades. The new curriculum promotes teaching practices that support pedagogies focused on student-centred approaches, active learning, assessment of student learning progress, and a phonics approach to teaching reading. Teachers are being provided with teacher guides and other teaching and learning resources, and receive face-to-face orientation on the new curriculum. In BEQUAL-targeted districts, education support grants are also available to facilitate additional in-service support for teachers and principals. This study has provided the opportunity to investigate teaching quality and student literacy outcomes in Lao PDR over two rounds of data collection, with another planned for October 2022. The Baseline Report captured ‘state of play’ information in 2019 prior to major curriculum changes, as well as the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. This summary provides an overview of findings and recommendations from the second year (2021) of the study, following two years of BEQUAL support for the implementation of the new Grade 1 Lao language curriculum.

The Australian Government is supporting the Government of Vanuatu through its Vanuatu Education Support Program (VESP) to undertake long-term education reforms. A key focus of these reforms is the rollout of a new national curriculum in conjunction with the National Language Policy (2012), intended to improve teaching quality and student learning outcomes for students in the primary and early secondary years of education. Part of a multi-year study series, the Education Analytics Service (EAS) is investigating how the VESP is making a difference to these teaching and learning outcomes. The new primary curriculum has been rolled out to schools in stages by year level, starting with Year 1 in 2016, and is accompanied by the distribution of teaching and learning materials and training. The new curriculum facilitates content uniformity and promotes pedagogical approaches, such as student-centred learning, that aim to transform teaching and learning. The National Language Policy is an important change implemented as part of the new curriculum, allowing agreed local languages to be used throughout the primary years as students make the transition to English or French (MoET, 2012). 1 Phases I and II of the VESP have been integral to the design and implementation of the new primary curriculum. In-service training modules have supported the curriculum rollout. VESP also supports the distribution and development of teaching and learning materials as part of the new curriculum. This study has provided the opportunity to investigate teaching quality and student learning outcomes in Vanuatu linked to the rollout of the national curriculum.

A full-scale burst test program was devised and agreed with the PRCI Materials Technical Committee Ad Hoc group. The work was undertaken over a two year period, 2003 and 2004. Due to budget constraints, only one pipe diameter and material was chosen for the test program. This was 24 (610 mm) outside diameter (OD) by 7.9 mm wall thickness, welded ERW steel linepipe of material API 5L grade B/X42. The criterion that defects separated by a distance of 6t or less will interact is over conservative. New rules for interaction, derived using non-linear finite element analyses and validated using full scale burst testing, have been derived for closely spaced metal loss interacting defects in pipelines. New, robust interaction rules for assessing corrosion metal loss defects in pipelines have been formulated for use by the pipeline industry.
