Streszczenie:
The popularity of television programs on health topics is argued by the constant interest of viewers in the field of health and medicine, also corroborated with the trends of the time to pay more attention to education in the field of health and healthy lifestyle. During its evolution, the television program on the topic of health has configured new particularities, because the functions it performs have also expanded and in some places even bifurcated: if at the beginning this type of show aimed to inform the population, to educate them, to familiarize them with the spectrum of health problems and the steps they should take at the first symptoms of the disease, currently this type of content is moving away from the rigid scientific-popularizing character and access an area of the show, where the viewer finds emotions and impressions. Over time, the structure of these television products changed, new formats appeared, which were taken over on a large scale by television stations in different countries.

The presented material is the end of the memoir essay by Tamara Malsagova, the beginning of which was published in the previous issue of the journal (No. 3, 2022). The author dedicated the first part of her memoirs (“People, Destinies, Connection of Generations: To the Thirtieth Anniversary of the Television of the Republic of Ingushetia”) to the fates and professional activities of her colleagues in the Ingush editorial office of Groznensky TV in the period from the late 1950s to the early 1990s. The part of the essay published here – “Remembering the Beginning” – corresponds to a relatively short, about three years, period of time (1992-1994), which, in terms of the intensity and fateful significance of events, surpassed the decades of peaceful life. The birth of a new republic – Ingushetia – was accompanied by a number of important geopolitical decisions, and it was impossible to implement them without creating a television and radio broadcasting platform in the regional media space capable of countering terrorism, working to create and de-escalate an armed conflict. Such a platform was the new branch of the federal television and radio company Russia – the State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company Ingushetia. The author tells why, during the division of the two republics, she had to continue working for some time as the Chief Director of the Program Directorate of Broadcasting of Grozny TV. Only in the spring of 1993 did Tamara Malsagova officially head the State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company Ingushetia as president of the television and radio company (1993–1995). The author highlights the previously uncovered production and management aspects of the work of the television and radio company, characterizes the key points of the media policy of television in the Republic of Ingushetia in the first half of the 1990s, details the structural transformations and difficult organizational work of the transition period, shows the features of the actions of the central and local media in a situation of military conflict are shown. The author emphasizes the contribution to the production of military news and correspondence, which was made by the staff of the novel, newly-created television and radio company in conditions that were as close as possible to military field conditions and required complete dedication. The author notes that television workers’ activities in Ingushetia in these difficult years included direct work on the air, the creation of dozens of reports from “hot spots”, assistance to journalists of central Russian and foreign media, support for television broadcasting from Nazran on RTR, NTV, REN TV channels, as well as in leading foreign companies (BBC, Associated Press, France Presse, CNN, Reuters, CBS News, etc.).

In the research were analyzed visual techniques that were used to fill the content of Ukrainian TV channels in the period from the beginning of December to the end of January. The Christmas and holiday season are not officially included in a separate category of TV programming, but the season is fundamentally important for attracting the viewer’s attention and for setting the further price of airtime for advertisers. The article is one of the first attempts to consider this aspect broadly/extensively and to outline the current vectors of studying the specifics of the program content of TV channels in the period of Christmas and holiday season, therefore this article is promising for the applied social communications area. In order to describe the main visual techniques, that are used in television content, the authors emphasize on their diversity, also they leave space for the further analysis of other nonverbal and verbal elements of the screen communication, that are used during festive period. Researchers have selected the TV channels logos, the program broadcast in the night from December 31.12.20 to January 01.01.2021, as well as other screen products of the different genres, telefilms and movies, that were shot and presented on TV broadcast in different years. Among the main research methods were used the following: content-analysis, which contributed to a thorough study of the software network of TV channels broadcasting, observation and comparison, which helped to outline the common and different characteristics of software products and broadcasts in general, induction method, which helped to form the key screen concepts. The suggested conclusions provide grounds for the statement, that the choice of content for filling TV channels during festive season is based on commercial inquiries, creative and technological resources of the television producers. In addition, the authors mention the segment of Christmas and New Year congratulations of head of state as promising for the further research.

The article examines the success or failure of two experimental pan-European channels, TV Eurikon and Europa TV, focusing on the role of television in shaping European identity. The research, carried out thanks to the International Visegrad Fund Research Grant Program and the Historical Archives of the European Union, showed that balanced reporting during development of satellite communication and strong pan-European communication strategy are of key importance for shaping the public perception of supranational institutions like the EU. To achieve success, policy makers must overcome obstacles such as linguistic diversity, regulatory frameworks and national interests. Although we are not in the era of the beginning of satellite systems, Europe should consider new models of cooperation, cultural exchanges and different perspectives for the long-term sustainability of similar pan-European initiatives.

Streszczenie:
People have been fascinated by detective novels and complicated investigations since the advent of the detective novel as a literary form in the mid-19th century. The progenitors and early popularizers of this genre, such as Edgar Allan Poe and Arthur Conan Doyle, prepared the ground for later authors of this popular genre. In the meantime, from the beginning to the present day, the techniques and methods of criminal investigations have been immeasurably improved. Criminal and detective fiction has followed innovations, so it has always remained relevant and representative in relation to real-life investigative techniques and methods. Significant development of the TV series as a medium and a massive increase in the quality of the recorded program through a significantly more serious approach and involvement of professionals from the film industry, somewhere since the beginning of the XXI century, has led to a change in approach to procedural and criminal TV series. Instead of the previously trendy but unrealistic and pseudo-scientific procedural programs and detectives whose characterization did not correspond to reality, a new wave of crime series has emerged that is significantly more grounded in reality and faithfully shows the methods and modalities of investigative actions and personalities of criminal investigators. We aim to identify common professional and psychological characteristics of subject investigators using media content analysis, narrative analysis, characterization analysis, and other appropriate analytical methods, and to propose a profile of a modern criminal investigator who, very importantly, corresponds with investigators in real life.

Fu Pei-mei (1931–2004), cookbook author and television personality in postwar Taiwan, was often called the “Julia Child of Chinese Cooking.” While Child sought to introduce American audiences to the unfamiliar tastes and traditions of French cuisine, Fu was demonstrating Chinese cooking to a new generation of postwar housewives in Taiwan, who needed her expertise and guidance in the kitchen. Fu authored more than thirty cookbooks, many of which were bilingual Chinese-English, and hosted Taiwan television's first instructional program on Chinese cooking for almost four decades, beginning in 1962. From a political vantage point, Fu's culinary talent, linguistic skills, and gracious demeanor perfectly filled the existing needs of the ruling Nationalist Party on Taiwan. Fu's comprehensive survey of Chinese regional cuisines united an otherwise fractious and fragile postwar nation. Yet Fu would not have attained the level of popularity that she did, had she not also connected deeply with her female audience. Over decades of dramatic social change for women in Taiwan, Fu embraced both the practical and emotional needs of ordinary housewives and career women alike, who sought out her expert guidance in the onerous daily task of feeding their families. This article compares the political, gender, and media contexts of Child's and Fu's culinary careers, in order to highlight the distinctive impact each had on millions of television viewers and would-be home cooks.

Attention to the Family Planning (KB) program received priority during the New Order era. The family planning program had even become a government program at the beginning of that period. Before becoming a government program, Family Planning had begun to be socialized by several individuals or private institutions who had an interest in the program. The aim of this research is to find out information sources that provide family planning information to the public, differences in perceptions according to information sources, differences in participation according to perception, differences in participation according to sources of information, and to find out 5 differences in participation according to perception which are controlled by level of education, number of children they have and desire to have another child. The method used in this research is census. Data analysis was carried out using the chi-square statistical test using the SPSS program version 17.0. The research results showed that the majority of respondents obtained family planning information through television (58.2%), and there was an influence of information on perceptions and participation in family planning. This is proven by the differences in perception according to exposure to information, participation according to perception and participation according to exposure to information convincingly with a confidence level of 95%. In the control variables, there are significant differences in participation according to education level and number of children (95%), while there is no significant difference in participation according to the desire to have more children. Information determines participation in family planning practices, but does not determine the desire to have more children. This is due to different perceptions of the value of children, so the desire to have more children does not influence participation in family planning practices.

The purpose of this project was to design a 3-year pilot program, identify funding sources, and write a grant proposal to fund an extended services reentry program, Helping Hands to New Beginnings (HH2NB), in Los Angeles, California. A review of literature revealed that the City of Los Angeles does not have sufficient reintegration programs to compensate for the influx of parolees. The proposed program would provide male parolees with reintegration services that target their criminogenic needs over a 3-year period. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration was selected as the most appropriate funder to support this program. The identified host agency is the Weingart Center that provides homeless individuals with the skills necessary to rehabilitate and re-stabilize their lives, secure employment, and find long-term housing. The actual submission or funding of this grant was not a requirement for the successful completion of the project.

It is estimated the national teacher shortage will be approximately two million by the year 2010. Thirty to 50% of new teachers leave the profession within the first 5 years. In an effort to improve teacher quality and retain teachers, many states and local school districts have instituted induction and mentoring programs. The state of Utah's Early Years Enhancement (EYE) induction and mentoring program went into effect January 1, 2003. This purpose of this study was to examine how secondary novice teachers experience the mentorship requirement of the EYE program. A phenomenological approach was used to illustrate the lived experience of 19 Utah teachers who completed the mentorship and all other requirements of the EYE program in order to earn their Level 2 License and continue on in the profession. Some of the themes that emerged from the participant interviews are congruent with the literature in terms of the benefits of a mentorship. A majority of participants reported their mentorship was beneficial because their mentor was a source of advice and information; their mentor was a confidant who also inspired confidence; and they got along with their mentor. Included in the study are unanticipated perceptions regarding the portfolio and the Praxis II requirements of the EYE program, giving a more holistic picture of what participants experienced during the mentor and induction process.

In recent years, problems have emerged in the realm of engineering and engineering education in the United States. Technology literacy is low, there are insufficient numbers of engineering students, and there are misconceptions surrounding the engineering profession. To remedy these problems, WGBH Boston and MIT have created a reality-style engineering-based television program for 9- to 13-year-old children, entitled Design Squad. One episode of the show will challenge the 8 child contestants to build a human-powered waterslide pump, to be used at a community swimming pool. 'Two potential design solutions are proposed for the design challenge: a ball-and-chain pump and a positive-displacement plunger pump. The design process of each solution and an evaluation of each solution's feasibility are presented. Criteria for a successful episode of the show are discussed in relation to the challenge. Prototype experimentation and analysis suggest that the human-powered waterslide challenge will invoke an engaging episode of Design Squad.

Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2015.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In this study I analyse the 1994 episodes of the popular soap opera Egoli: Place of Gold that coincide with the so-called ‘birth’ of the New South Africa. This moment in media history is characterised by a heightened sense of anticipation surrounding Egoli as the first local soap opera created by Franz Marx at the pinnacle of his career for the relatively new – and only – independent broadcaster in the country, M-Net. Because of the reliance of this genre on perceived realism, Egoli offers a historically significant televisual mediation of the widespread social and political changes that mark this particular period. I argue that the soap opera elicits a non-critical passive spectatorship and should therefore be regarded as a ‘readerly’ medium that transmits a form of pre-negotiated textual hegemony directly into the intimacy of the domestic viewing space. While acknowledging an awareness of the pivotal role played by white Afrikaans men in the safeguarding of cultural hegemony up until this historical juncture, my study diverges from the wealth of research on soap opera as a women’s medium and approaches Egoli with an interest in the programme’s construction of masculinities. An analysis of three contrasting male characters investigates Egoli’s formulation of a social matrix that reflects not only the programme’s attitude towards gender, but also to social power, class and race. I conclude that this specific soap opera lacks the ability to produce or reflect radical change. Egoli merely serves to reiterate the affirmation of the hegemony of an established order of Afrikaner patriarchy on a superficial level.

While much has been written on the Australian film and television industry, little has been presented by actual producers, filmmakers and technicians of their time and experiences within that same industry. Similarly, with historical documentaries, it has been academics rather than filmmakers who have led the debate. This thesis addresses this shortcoming and bridges the gap between practitioner experience and intellectual discussion, synthesising the debate and providing an important contribution from a filmmaker-academic, in its own way unique and insightful. The thesis is presented in two voices. First, my voice, the voice of memoir and recollected experience of my screen adventures over 38 years within the Australian industry, mainly producing historical documentaries for the ABC and the SBS. This is represented in italics. The second half and the alternate chapters provide the industry framework in which I worked with particular emphasis on documentaries and how this evolved and developed over a 40-year period, from 1970 to 2010. Within these two voices are three layers against which this history is reviewed and presented. Forming the base of the pyramid is the broad Australian film industry made up of feature films, documentary, television drama, animation and other types and styles of production. Above this is the genre documentary within this broad industry, and making up the small top tip of the pyramid, the sub-genre of historical documentary. These form the vertical structure within which industry issues are discussed. Threading through it are the duel determinants of production: ‘the market’ and ‘funding’. Underpinning the industry is the involvement of government, both state and federal, forming the three dimensional matrix for the thesis. For over 100 years the Australian film industry has depended on government support through subsidy, funding mechanisms, development assistance, broadcast policy and legislative provisions. This thesis aims to weave together these industry layers, binding them with the determinants of the market and funding, and immersing them beneath layers of government legislation and policy to present a new view of the Australian film industry.

abstract: This study examined whether the New Beginnings Program (NBP), a preventive parenting intervention, led to changes in coping strategies and coping efficacy in emerging adults whose families had participated in the program 15 years earlier. Gender and baseline risk were examined as moderators of these relations. Participants (M = 25.6 years; 50% female) were from 240 families that had participated in an experimental trial (NBP [mother-only, mother-child] vs. literature control). Data from the pretest and 15-year follow-up were used. Multiple regression analyses revealed that pretest risk interacted with program participation in the mother-only condition of the NBP such that offspring entering the program with higher pretest risk reported significantly less avoidant coping 15 years later. There was a marginal effect of participation in the NBP on problem-focused coping; emerging adults who had participated in the NBP had marginally higher levels of problem-focused coping. There were no significant main effects nor interactive program by risk or program by gender effects on support coping or coping efficacy. Results are discussed in terms of their implications for implementation of preventive interventions and research on pathways of coping.

This thesis examines two of the female-driven sitcoms from the 2011-2012 season, New Girl and Girls. I analyze both series from a third-wave feminist perspective, looking at how each series portrays its respective lead character, Jess and Hannah, and how each series portrays funny women in general. Through these analyses, I ultimately argue that Jess on New Girl represents a much more promising feminist icon than Hannah on Girls. This is mainly because Jess is driven by self-love and self-confidence while Hannah is so defined by her self-hatred that she becomes difficult for viewers to relate. Most disappointingly, I find that female-driven sitcoms use humor as a weapon to discipline its characters.

The hardware of digital TV (DTV) transmission was established, but we still produce TV programs by traditional analogue ways. Hence, DTV programs should be produced more that can help audiences understand the value of DTV. The video clip project-“New Digital Life” which sponsor by Government Informant Office provided producers DTV programs producing environment to study DTV content production. The project help advance DTV producers which further their DTV related knowledge, technique and originality. I got a lot of experiences after joining the project. In this thesis, I will analyze technical aspect of DTV in the project and provide suggestion. There are different standards of digital terrestrial TV in the world. Taiwan adopts DVB-T(Digital Video Broadcasting – Terrestrial) standard which feature in mobile receiving, MHP(Multimedia Home Platform), HDTV(High Definition Television). In this thesis, I will focus how to use DVB-T features in each step of producing DTV programs, especially in program planning and originality. In addition, the clip “New Digital Life” displays three types of TV program, drama, documentary, and animation. I will discuss “information gathering”, “content thinking”, “technique applying”, and “job arranging” in pre-producing, producing, and post-producing of the clip. I will discuss the anticipation of producer and audience when they saw the clip. The clip producing experience will also let me to discuss the predicament of producing DTV programs. DTV must be the pivot of home media center in the future. Simultaneously, it also will be an important communication duct between family and society. The future of DTV can be neglected, I will provide suggestion to the DTV related professional that depend on my experience of “New Digital Life” project.

Streszczenie:
Abstract From the beginning, European broadcasters collaborated with each other. In 1925, at the BBC’s initiative, the International Broadcasting Union (IBU) was established. One of the early functions of the Geneva-based organization was to draft a frequency allocation plan. It also tried, unsuccessfully, to reduce commercial as well as propaganda broadcasting across national frontiers and initiated a program exchange, mostly of concerts (Eugster, 1983). During World War II, the IBU was largely dormant, but it was revived afterward along with a new organization, the International Broadcasting Organization (OIR) (Briggs, 1979). The OIR, however, was soon abandoned by the West European countries. It was renamed OIRT with the advent of television and headquartered in Prague. The West European broadcasters established in 1950 the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), to which broadcasters from middle-Eastern and North African countries were soon added. The EBU domiciled itself in Geneva and shortly thereafter absorbed the IBU. With the demise of the Eastern Bloc after 1989, it seemed likely that the EBU would absorb the OIRT.

Streszczenie:
“University A” is a small, private liberal arts school with a religious affiliation. Located in a large city, it draws locally and from its particular religious group. With an enrollment under 3,000, it carries a Carnegie Classification of Baccalaureate II and has its own board of trustees. The school has pushed the use of new technology in instruction. For instance, it was one of the first schools in its area to install a fiber optic network across campus. Programs such as business feature the active use of technology to enhance learning. For example, in an international business course, students develop links with fellow students in other countries. However, University A differs from other schools that have embraced new information and communication technology; it has rejected some uses as not appropriate to the mission of the school. For instance, University A will not use videoconferencing to send instruction to remote sites. Why? School leaders feel that a significant part of a student’s experience at University A comes from faculty providing role models, and that role modeling cannot be done through a television monitor. “University B” is a regional public university located in a small town in a heavily rural portion of its state. The nearest small city is an hour’s drive away, and it draws students regionally, mostly from nearby counties. With an enrollment under 10,000, the school carries a Carnegie Classification of Master’s I. For years, University B has used its Continuing Education program in aggressively serving the region, beginning with such means as “circuit rider” faculty who traveled to remote sites to teach classes and broadcast television instruction through local public television. The school has continued its aggressive outreach with new technology. In the 1990s, University B quickly moved into videoconferencing (compressed video) to phase out at least some of the circuit rider faculty. At the same time, the school has expanded the off-campus sites to which it sends instruction. Lastly, University B has augmented its MBA program by bringing in a health care administration concentration from another university via videoconferencing, and it has been considering the future servicing of majors in declining programs such as geography by outsourcing instruction. Officers at the two universities described above were among those at several schools who participated in a series of case studies (Rayburn, 1997). The two schools use distance learning technology (DLT) in very different ways, but they do share at least one common trait: they have clear pictures of how to use available technology. Put another way, they have identifiable strategies for using technology that conform to the missions of the schools. The point of this chapter is to identify and describe strategies for using distance learning technology (DLT) at higher education institutions. Research suggests three major strategies, the “Guest Lecturer” strategy, the “Automated Correspondence Course” strategy, and the “Large Lecture Hall” strategy. All three strategies have antecedents in the recent history of higher education, and each has its own implications for the future. The next section looks at literature and field research on the strategic use of DLT.

Since its appearance in the grid of programming, televisual entertainment has changed on several points: the presentation, the production, the mixture between entertainment and information. In this chapter, the authors study entertainment on French television by raising four principal points. A first part points out the important dates that marked the history of televisual entertainment. The second one presents the new chains that exploited the crenel of the entertainment and then allowed the multiplication of these programs. The third part counts the results and the analyses carried out on the evolution of the televisual entertainment by researchers in social sciences. The last one analyses the particular mixture between entertainment and politic. In conclusion, the authors say that entertainment has considerably changed in form but also in background. The objectives and reasons that characterize it are not comparable to those of its beginning.

The intellectual origins of neoliberalism are commonly traced to the formation of a “thought collective” in interwar Europe. This chapter, however, makes the case that neoliberalism should instead be understood as an episode within a longer history of liberalism in the modern world. It argues that American neoliberals were obliged to define their political program not only against an earlier laissez-faire tradition but also against the “new liberalism” of the Progressives and Roosevelt’s New Deal. As a result, postwar neoliberal ideology was protean in nature and was commonly but mistakenly conflated with conservatism. Neoliberals adopted three strategies for advancing their political agenda. First, they sought to use the state in novel ways to create an economic order that would nurture both domestic and international markets; second, they sought to expand the terrain of market principles to new areas of social life; and finally, they sought to revive the classical liberal concern for promoting individual freedom and self-determination.

Streszczenie:
Achieving widespread access by all European citizens to new services and advanced applications of the information society is one of the crucial goals of the European Union’s (EU) strategic framework for the future. Towards realizing this primary target, multiple access platforms are expected to become available, using different access methods for delivery of services (and of related digital content) to a wide variety of end-user terminals, thus creating an “always-on” and properly “converged” technological and business environment, all able to support and to promote innovation and growth (Commission of the European Communities, 2005). The result will be a “complementarity” of services and markets in an increasingly sophisticated way. Economic and technology choices imply certain networks for certain service options. As these networks become more powerful, the temptation is to adapt certain characteristics of the network technology to make it suitable for modern services. The challenge is to build “bridges” or “links” between the different convergent technologies without undermining the business models on which they are built. In such a context, converging technology means that innovative systems and services are under development with inputs, contributions, and traditions from multiple industries, including telecommunications, broadcasting, Internet service provision, computer and software industries, and media and publishing industries, where the significance of standardization and interoperability can be fundamental. In any case, digital technology can offer the potential for realizing the future electronic information highways or integrated broadband communications. However, for the multiplatform environment to proliferate in liberalized markets and for the platforms themselves to complement each other, the related prerequisites and the governing regulatory environment must favor technologically neutral conditions for competition, without giving preference to one platform over others (Chochliouros & Spiliopoulou, 2005a). Among the latest European priorities for further development of the information society sector as described above were several efforts for extending the role of digital television based on a multiplatform approach (European Commission, 2002a). If widely implemented, digital (interactive) television may complement existing PC- and Internet-based access, thus offering a potential alternative for market evolution (Chochliouros, Spiliopoulou, Chochliouros, & Kaloxylos, 2006). In particular, following current market trends, digital television and third generation (3G) mobile systems driven by commonly adopted standards can open up significant possibilities for a variety of platform access to services, offering great features of substitution and complementarity. The same option holds for the supporting networks as well (European Commission, 2003a). Within the above fast developing and fully evolutionary context, the thematic objective of digital video broadcasting (DVB) applications (including both the underlying network infrastructures and corresponding services offered) can influence a great variety of areas (http://www.dvb.org). In particular, DVB stands as a suite of internationally accepted open standards, mainly related to digital television- and data-oriented applications. These standards (in most cases already tested and adopted in the global marketplace) are maintained by the so-called DVB Project, an industry-driven consortium with more than 300 distinct members, and they are officially published by a joint technical committee (JTC) of the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI), the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC), and the European Broadcasting Union (EBU). The existing DVB standards cover all aspects of digital television, that is, from transmission through interfacing, conditional access, and interactivity for digital video, audio, and data. In particular, DVB not only includes the transmission and distribution of television program material in digital format over various media, but also a choice of associated features (considered for exploiting capabilities of all underlying technologies). However, market benefits can be best achieved if a “harmonized” approach, based on a longterm perspective, is adopted since the beginning of all corresponding efforts, intending to facilitate a progressive development towards new (and more advanced) services in a smooth and compatible manner (Oxera, 2003). An essential precondition for this progress is the adoption, in the market sector, of common standards which, while providing necessary clarity for both producers and consumers in the short term for early introduction of digital television facilities, also supply the potential for subsequent smooth upgrading to new and higher grades of service. Thus, in the framework of competitive and liberalized environments DVB can support major efforts for the penetration (and the effective adoption) of enhanced multimedia-based services (Fenger & Elwood-Smith, 2000) independently of the type and/or format of the content offered while simultaneously promoting broadband opportunities. Furthermore, being fully conformant to the requirements imposed by convergence’s aspect, DVB can advance optimized solutions for different technical communications platforms. The European market has been widely developed in the area of (interactive) digital television (Chochliouros et al., 2006; European Commission, 2003b) and the EU is now leading further deployment through DVB procedures. The focus provided by a common set of technical standards and specifications has given a market advantage and spurred the appearance of innovation perspectives. Baseband: 1) In radio communications systems, the range of frequencies, starting at 0 Hz (DC) and extending up to an upper frequency as required to carry information in electronic form, such as a bitstream, before it is modulated onto a carrier in transmission or after it is demodulated from a carrier in reception. 2) In cable communications, such as those of a local area network (LAN), a method whereby signals are transmitted without prior frequency conversion.

This chapter focuses on the early lives of three of the key personalities in this book. The first of these is Rafael Serra, cigar maker, poet, and politician. The second is Gertrudis Heredia de Serra, a midwife who became one of the few black women to complete a certification program in obstetrics at the University of Havana before joining her husband, Serra, in New York. There, the couple raised a daughter. Heredia, along with another midwife, led the various women's organizations affiliated with La Liga. The third is Sotero Figueroa, a Puerto Rican typesetter and journalist. Figueroa set the type, proofed copy, and oversaw the printing of José Martí's newspaper, Patria. The experiences of three other figures help to fill in some crucial gaps around the stories of the first three: Manuela Aguayo, Juan Gualberto Gómez, and José Martí. These individuals do not represent the full spectrum of diversity within the group that would later converge at La Liga. But their stories are sufficiently distinct from one another to provide a starting place—a sketch of the varied racial landscapes out of which they came.

This study, conducted within the Digital Media Laboratory (LMD) at the Federal University of Juiz de Fora (UFJF), explores the potential transformations in the viewer / interactor’s journey in the context of TV 3.0. Within this article, we analyze key aspects of this evolving journey and its broader implications for the future of TV consumption. Our investigation delves into several critical considerations, including the potential disruption of established television norms, the need to address viewers’ challenges and desires, the possibility of departing from traditional programming schedules, and the emergence of new functionalities for program guides (EPG), remote controls, and second-screen devices. Importantly, we recognize that television consumption in Brazil extends beyond mere technological shifts, encompassing profound connections with social behaviors and national identity. As TV 3.0 continues to evolve, its impact on how people engage with content is poised to shape the television landscape in the coming years.

Today, with the development of technology, many developments and changes have been experienced in mass media. In the traditional period, content could only be accessed from sources such as television, newspapers, magazines, and radio, while the digital platforms that emerged with the era of the so-called new media enabled people to acquire the content they wanted at any time. Netflix, one of these digital platforms, is a video streaming service that offers on-demand access to individuals. Netflix, which first started selling DVD subscriptions by mail in 1998, has turned into a platform that sells monthly subscriptions to reach the video content it hosts today. Digital platforms such as Netflix offer users the opportunity to watch the content they want from anywhere, with the communication device (tablet, phone, computer) they want, in a way that they can create their own streams, without even the need for internet. Within the scope of this study, the contents on the Netflix platform in the context of the flow theory of Raymond Williams will be analyzed by content analysis method. Williams discussed the program structure of the television as streaming. According to him, television contents create a whole among themselves and present a flow to the viewers and the audience is caught in this flow. Within the scope of the study, the contents of Netflix, one of the digital content viewing platforms that are formed as a result of changing broadcasting concepts, will be analyzed using semi-structured interview technique in the perspective of flow theory.

[This Proceedings paper was revised and published in the journal Issues in Informing Science and Information Technology] Aim/Purpose: This study was designed to examine the effectiveness of mentor’s work with immigrant children and adolescents at risk, using the Elements Way. Background: The New Media offers our “screen kids” a lot of information, many behavioral models, and a new type of social communication. The Elements Way is an educational method designed to enhance openness, development, breakthroughs, goal achievement, and transformation in the age of media and social networks. Methodology: The Elements Way was developed following research on communication in the diversified media, especially new media such as Facebook, WhatsApp, and television reality shows, and the study is an examination of the effectiveness of mentors’ work with immigrant children and adolescents at risk, using the Elements Way. All mentors had been trained in the Elements Way. The study population included 640 mentors working with immigrants’ children in Israel. The work was conducted in 2010-2013. The mixed-methods approach was selected to validate findings. Contribution: Empowering children and enhancing their ability to cope; Creating openness and sharing, making children more attentive to the significant adults in their lives; Supporting children who face the complex reality that characterizes our age. Findings: Significant differences were found in the mentors’ conduct with the children. Work programs were designed and implemented with care and consistency, and mentors succeeded in generating change within the children and achieving desired goals. Of the 640 participating mentors, 62 were not able to promote the child, and interviews with them revealed that their work with the children was not consistent with the Elements Way and began from a different vantage point. Recommendations for Practitioners: Success factors: Self-awareness and awareness of one’s surroundings. Empathy. Willingness to engage in significant interactions. Self-cleansing and self-reflection. Ability to engage in a personal and interpersonal dialogue. Ability to accept and contain the child. Cooperation with the child in creating a work program and assisting the child to achieve the goals that were set in the program. Recommendation for Researchers: Future studies should focus on analyzing the discussions of children and adolescents, to add depth to our insights regarding children and adolescents’ perception of the mentors’ work from their perspective. Impact on Society: Finding the “keys” to openness, development, goal achievement, and transformation in our work with “screen kids.” Future Research: Studies that are designed to examine the effectiveness of mentor’s work with immigrant children and adolescents at risk, using the Elements Way.

Created in 1978, the Solid Waste Authority of Palm Beach County (Authority) has developed an “award winning” solid waste management system that includes the following facilities to service the residents and businesses in Palm Beach County, Florida: • North County Resource Recovery Facility (NCRRF); • Residential and Commercial Recovered Materials Processing Facility; • Six Transfer Stations; • Class I Landfill; • Class III Landfill; • Biosolids Processing Facility; • Ferrous Processing Facility; • Woody Waste Recycling Facility; • Composting Facility; and • Two Household Hazardous Waste Facilities. The Authority has proactively planned and implemented an integrated program to provide for the long term, reliable, economically sound and environmentally sustainable management of solid waste in Palm Beach County. The County’s anticipated growth necessitated that the Authority evaluate several options for long-term processing and disposal capacity. This resulted in a decision to expand its WTE capacity with a new mass burn facility, the first facility of its kind to be constructed in the US in almost two decades, reaffirming its commitment to waste-to-energy. The planned 3,000 TPD facility will provide the Authority with a total disposal capacity of 5,000 TPD generating approximately 150MW of renewable energy. The decision to proceed with the expansion was approved by the Authority’s Board in October 2008. The Authority, with its Consulting Engineer, Malcolm Pirnie/ARCADIS, has since made significant progress in the implementation of this landmark project including the completion of the preliminary design, securing environmental permits, procuring a full service vendor, issuance of nearly $600 million revenue bonds for signing an electrical sales contract, and ongoing extensive public outreach efforts. This presentation will focus on the ongoing development of the new mass burn facility and an update of the status of activities conducted to date such as: • Environmental Permitting – Issuance of the PPSA Conditions of Certification and submittal of the Post Certification/Pre Construction requirements; • Vendor Procurement – Iterative procurement process designed to obtain vendor input through final selection and contract award of a full service vendor (Design, Build and Operate); • Preliminary Design – Innovative design features such as the utilization of SCR technology for control of NOx emission and incorporation of rainwater harvesting and water reuse; • Public Outreach – the Authority’s efforts to keep the public informed through mass mailings, community meetings, television commercials and educational materials for all audiences; and • Financing – Approach designed to preserve alternative minimum tax benefits.

Streszczenie:
The projects sponsored by the Gülen-inspired movement are numerous, international and costly in terms of human and financial capital. Critics of the movement often question the fi- nancing of these initiatives – with some convinced of collusion with Middle Eastern govern- ments, others (within Turkey) suspicious that Western governments are financially backing the projects. Aware of these criticisms, in a recent comment to a group of visiting follow- ers, Fethullah Gülen indicated greater financial transparency must become a priority for the movement. This paper addresses the financing of Gülen-inspired projects, based on interviews with busi- ness leaders in Turkey, as well as local businessmen throughout Turkey who constitute the financial infrastructure of the movement. In addition, the paper presents data from one local Gülen movement organisation in Houston, Texas, that collects thousands of dollars annually from local members, mostly students on small educational stipends. The paper is framed sociologically in terms of organisational theories of commitment. Beginning with Kanter (1972;1977) and including subsequent major figures in the organi- sational field (e.g. Reichers 1985; Meyer and Allen 1991; Hall 2002; Scott 2003), scholars have demonstrated a positive correlation between sacrifices asked of members and degree of commitment to the goals of the organisation. Using this perspective, the paper argues that the financial contributions made by members in the Gülen movement both demonstrate commit- ment to the ideals espoused by Fethullah Gülen and generate commitment to the movement. The paper presents empirical evidence, based on interviews with financial supporters both in Turkey and the U.S., of how financial resources are generated, the initiatives being supported and the impact of financial giving on the commitment of supporters. The Gülen movement is a civil society movement that arose in the late 1960s in Turkey, initially composed of a loose network of individuals who were inspired by M. Fethullah Gülen. As a state-approved mosque preacher, Gülen delivered sermons in cities throughout Turkey, beginning with a handful of listeners and gradually drawing tens of thousands of people. His sermons focused not only on religious texts but included a broad array of such topics as religion and science, social justice, human rights, moral values and the importance of education. Gülen repeatedly stressed the importance of educating the youth of society by establishing first-rate schools that expose students to the latest scientific knowledge in an at- mosphere of moral values. The projects sponsored by Gülen-inspired followers today number in the thousands, span international borders and are costly in terms of human and financial capital (Woodhall 2005). These initiatives include over 2000 schools and seven universities in more than ninety countries in five continents (Yavuz and Esposito 2003; Baskan 2004; Tekalan 2005), two modern hospitals, the Zaman newspaper (now in both a Turkish and English edition), a television channel (Samanyolu), a radio channel (Burc FM), CHA (a ma- jor Turkish news agency), Aksiyon (a leading weekly news magazine), national and interna- tional Gülen conferences, Ramadan interfaith dinners, interfaith dialog trips to Turkey from countries around the globe and the many programs sponsored by the Journalists and Writers Foundation. In addition, the Isik insurance company and Bank Asya, an Islamic bank, are af- filiated with the Gülen community. In 1993 the community also established the Business Life Cooperation Association (ISHAD) which has 470 members (Baskan 2004). Questions regarding the financing of these numerous and expensive projects are periodically raised by both critics of the Gülen Movement and newcomers to the movement who are invited to Gülen related events. Because of the large amounts of money involved in these projects, on occasion people have raised the possibility of a collusion between the movement and various governments, especially Saudi Arabia and/or Iran, and including the Turkish government. There has even been suspicion that the American CIA may be a financial partner behind the projects (Kalyoncu, forthcoming). Aware of these criticisms, in a recent comment to a group of visiting followers, Fethullah Gülen indicated that a priority must be proactive financial transparency. In this paper, we address directly the issue of the financing of Gülen inspired projects based on the little that is available in published sources, including an interview with Gülen himself, and supplementing that information with interviews with business leaders in Turkey who constitute the infrastructure of the movement. In addition, we present data from one local Gülen organization in Houston, Texas, that regularly collects over half a million dollars from local members, mostly students on small educational stipends. Our analysis is framed socio- logically in terms of organizational theories of commitment. We argue that the contributions made by rank and file movement members, as well as by wealthier sponsors, both demon- strate commitment to the ideals of the movement and simultaneously generate commitment to the movement. An analysis of Gülen-inspired financial contributions must include the ideological and reli- gious motivations inherent in the concepts of hizmet, himmet, sohbet, istisare, and mutevelli. For an understanding of these concepts, we are most indebted to the superb work of Mehmet Kalyoncu whose study of the Gülen movement in Mardin, a city in southeastern Turkey, was very helpful both in understanding these ideas and in demonstrating their applicability to the financing of local projects in the city.

Streszczenie:
Main objectives of this article are changes in the programming principles of the “Suspilne Culture” TV channel, the peculiarities of the program content in the period 2020-2022, as well as potential for further channel development from the content perspective. Methodology of the analysis includes processing primary sources of information, synthesis, induction and deduction, problem-thematic analysis of television programs. Results. During 2017-2021, the specialized public channel about culture increased the number of its own programs, and the ratings of the channel increased. “UA: Culture” produced their own daily information program and several analytical programs about various types of art. Although even now, a significant part of the channel content consists of not relevant and not adapted for the Ukrainian audience purchased serials and educational cycles. After analyzing “Suspilne Culture” TV channel program grid for October 3-7, 2022, significant part of not typical for declared program policy content was discovered. During the present period only 2 programs corresponded to the specifics of the channel and were developed by “Suspilne” production. Conclusions. In general, thematic blocks such as cultural policy of Ukraine and institutions, religious practices, economy of creative industries and representation of Ukrainian culture in the world are not broadcasted. Significance. The conducted research allowed us to actualize the need for a scientific approach to the content and programming policy of the “Suspilne Culture” TV channel. The collected material gives reasons to testify that the mission of the public channel and the declared program principles are implemented only partially. The channel lacks in-depth analytics on a whole range of current cultural issues. The share of self-produced programs is minimal. Instead, purchased content often does not represent the specifics of the channel and does not fulfill the mission of the public broadcaster. The channel program managers should focus on the change in cultural discourse that has been taking place since the beginning of the full-scale war of the Russian Federation against Ukraine. In battles, our army and people defend, first of all, our right to own identity, our right on culture and own voice to tell the world about ourselves. The air of the TV channel “Suspilne Culture” should be filled with exactly such ideas. Keywords: culture; public television; television content; journalism of the culture.
