Online news comments are often confronted with issues of civility and inclusivity, which are sometimes pegged to the anonymity afforded to contributors in those spaces. In this work we study one form of anonymity in online comments that manifests as users changing their display name when they write a given comment. We undertake a predominantly quantitative analysis of how display names are changed across over 4 million comments on the New York Times site. We characterize the extent and nature of name changes on the site, explore the relationship of name changes to topicality and sentiment, and examine how name changes might be used to inform the moderation of online comments.

Abstract Although names exist in all languages of the world, their formal and functional manifestations show great diversity. Due to their embeddedness in socio-cultural and historical contexts, an anthropological-linguistic approach that brings together linguistic and cultural facts is required to capture the full meaning of names and naming practices. Overall, names are given to entities of cultural importance and of significance for humans in social life; name usage and name-giving practices reflect social beliefs and cultural values; and their meaning is strongly shaped by cultural and historical contexts. This paper provides a typological, cross-linguistic overview of named entities, kinds of naming practices, and types of meanings associated with names, name giving, and name usage, which are illustrated with numerous examples from Australia, Europe, and Africa. Therefore, it also offers a structural framework for the contributions in this issue.

Names are very significant in people’s lives for they reveal historical, social and cultural ideologies of a people. Place names can be said to be an under-utilized resource in historical, social and cultural contexts which, when fully exploited, has much to tell on what people should value. When linguistically analyzing these names, morphological and syntactical aspects usually merge. This study explored the ideological, morphological and syntactic perspectives of the linguistic landscape of Solusi University, specifically focusing on places on the campus, roads, hostels and other important buildings like the library and halls of residents. A critical internal analysis of name-structures was done. The researcher used qualitative research methodology where documents were studied and semi-structured interviews were administered to local elderly people to receive data on names at the university. Findings show that Solusi University names can be classified under the syntagmatic morpho-syntactic category. Again, the naming at the university brought out what can be termed contribution ideology. Most of places were given names of people who significantly contributed to the establishment and development of Solusi (first as a college and later as a university). The structure of these names reveals morphological and syntactical patterns that are worth to be studied. The study recommends people awareness of place names in their locales so that they appreciate what name contributors have done to humanity. People should also study place names for their aesthetic value as well as for their reference to humanity’s social history.

The names for 19 genera, 17 subgenera, 150 species and 150 subspecies of Ixodidae described by Paul Schulze, names changed by him after the revision of certain taxa, new ranks for names originally described by other authors, a few lapsus calamorum and some incorrect names ascribed to Schulze by other workers are discussed. Two genera (Cosmiomma and Nosomma) are valid, but most of Schulze’s subgenera are difficult to assess because of the current disarray that prevails at this classificatory level in the Ixodidae. Thirty-six of 150 species names discussed by Schulze are considered valid herein (3 species of Amblyomma, 1 Bothriocroton, 1 Cosmiomma, 6 Dermacentor, 4 Haemaphysalis, 5 Hyalomma, 13 Ixodes, 1 Nosomma and 2 Rhipicephalus), while 28 are valid species epithets that are currently assigned to different genera (e.g., Acarus undatus was formerly classified in the genus Aponomma but is currently known as Bothriocroton undatum). Twenty-nine of these valid species names were authored by Schulze or Schulze & Schlottke. The remaining species names are mostly synonyms or names that are incertae sedis, nomen nudum or lapsus calamorum. The 150 subspecific names are treated as synonyms of valid species or as nomina nuda, nomina dubia, incertae sedis or lapsus calamorum. Many names used by Schulze have been synonymized based on sound systematic research, but the justification for synonymizing other names is occasionally weak. It will be important to take these names into account if, as has already happened, future molecular and morphological studies result in the reinstatement of Schulze names currently considered synonyms. This situation has particular relevance for Amblyomma geoemydae, the Amblyomma marmoreum species complex, Amblyomma testudinarium, Oriental species of Dermacentor, Hyalomma in general, Ixodes arboricola, Ixodes canisuga, Ixodes lividus, Ixodes trianguliceps and Ixodes uriae. In conclusion, the prolific contributions of Paul Schulze have their weak points —the many species and subspecies of Hyalomma described by him are unjustified as is the alleged worldwide distribution of the former genus Aponomma—but his perception of the complexity of the genus Dermacentor (under Indocentor) in the Oriental and Australasian Zoogeographic Regions, as well as his understanding of tick biodiversity in these regions constitute seminal scientific achievements.

The article is devoted to the study of the antonyms of nominal word formation in modern English. The problem of word formation as one of the most important ways of enriching and developing a language has attracted and continues to attract the attention of linguists of various theoretical views and different countries. One of the little-studied areas of linguistics is antonymy. The article explores some issues of word formation theory, namely, what place word formation takes in the system of language sciences, what this science operates with, what are its basic units. The problem of compatibility of generating bases with word-forming formants is considered. The main set of affixes that form antonyms is given, a comparative characteristic of each of the word-formation tools in parts of speech (nouns and adjectives) is given, and a final assessment of the productivity of antonymic morphemes in English is given. The theory of matching suffixes V.A. Rudnitskaya and traces the effects of this theory in practice. Knowledge of the theory and methods of word formation and their practical application greatly contributes to the enrichment of the vocabulary based on familiar vocabulary.

The last spelled letter often indicates the sex of first names. Most female names end with the last letter a, e, or i. Female names are distinctive and therefore easy to identify because of the small number of predominantly female endings. Most male names end with one of 19 last letters. Two last letters, h and y, occur with similar frequency for both sexes. The cultural tradition of higher status for men contributes to the avoidance of predominantly female last letters for male names. A female name with a predominantly male last letter therefore occurs more often than a male name with a predominantly female last letter. The findings were obtained from the 500 most frequent first names given to males and females in Pennsylvania in 1990.

Naming is an integral part of Yorùbá culture. It has an identity effects on the bearers. It is also believed that names control the actions and conducts of the bearers. The Yorùbá film producers are always careful and conversant with the fact that names given to their character must reflect in their characterization because orúkọ ọmọ ní í ro ọmọ ‘name has effects on a child’. The script writer, Mike Bamiloye, uses the name to draw a sketch of the attitudes, behavior and stature of the characters. This study therefore interrogates the socio-semiotic interpretation of names given to selected characters in Yorùbá Christian film, Àbẹ̀joyè. It also examines the names given to individual character, family and town. The paper concludes that the Yorùbá philosophical beliefs in names reflect in the selected Christian movie despite the fact that Christianity abhors traditional beliefs; the cultural aspects cannot be underestimated. The film, Àbẹ̀joyè, which serves as our data source is produced by Mount Zion Film Productions, Nigeria and Flaming Sword Film Productions, Texas in 2020-2023. Bamiloye’s unique and stylish way of naming characters show his dexterity in Yorùbá literature which always portrays and projects her culture through the creative way of assigning name to characters. This study contributes to the existing body of knowledge on Yorùbá Christian film and names among Yorùbá people

Abstract This article contributes to the studies of sound symbolism, systematic relationships between sounds and meanings. Specifically, we build on a series of studies conducted within a research paradigm called “Pokémonastics,” which uses the Pokémon universe to explore sound symbolic patterns. Inspired by a study of existing English Pokémon names, two experiments were conducted in which English speakers were provided with pairs of pre-evolution and post-evolution Pokémon characters, the latter of which were larger. The participants were given two name choices whose members were systematically different in some phonological properties. The results show the following sound symbolic patterns to be productive: (1) names with higher segment counts are more likely to be associated with post-evolution characters than names with lower segment counts, (2) names containing [a] are more likely to be associated with post-evolution characters than names containing [i], (3) names containing [u] are more likely to be associated with post-evolution characters than names containing [i], and (4) names containing coronal consonants are more likely to be associated with post-evolution characters than names containing labial consonants. Overall, the current results suggest that phonological considerations come into play when English speakers name new fictional creatures. Implications of the current results for the theories of sound symbolism are discussed throughout the paper.

A taxonomic backbone of the Plumbaginaceae is presented and the current state of knowledge on phylogenetic relationships and taxon limits is reviewed as a basis for the accepted taxon concepts. In total, 4,476 scientific names and designations are treated of which 30 are not in the family Plumbaginaceae. The Plumbaginaceae are subdivided in three tribes with 26 genera and 1,179 accepted species. Two subgenera, 17 sections, two subsections and 187 infraspecific taxa are accepted. At the species and infraspecific level 2,782 synonyms were assigned to accepted taxa, whereas 194 names were excluded from the core checklist (i.e., unplaced taxa, infrageneric subdivisions with still uncertain application, names of verified uncertain application, invalid horticultural names, excluded names from other families, other excluded designations, and unresolved names). The EDIT Platform for Cybertaxonomy was utilized as the tool to compile and manage the names and further taxonomic data under explicit taxon concepts. Secundum references are given in case taxon concepts were taken from the literature, whereas this study serves as reference for newly circumscribed taxa. The family’s division into the tribes Aegialitideae, Limonieae, and Plumbagineae departs from earlier two-subfamily classifications, prompted by recent phylogenetic findings that challenge the subfamilial affinity of Aegialitis. The genus Acantholimon was extended to include Gladiolimon, as currently available phylogenetic and morphological data support this merger. In Limonium, all accepted species could be assigned to sections and subsections or the “Mediterranean lineage”, respectively, making use of the phylogenetic distribution of their morphological characters and states. A new combination and/or status is proposed for Dyerophytum socotranum, Limonium thymoides, Limonium × fraternum, Limonium × rossmaessleri, and Limonium sect. Jovibarba. Special attention is given to nomenclatural issues, particularly for Statice nomen ambiguum to resolve the names under accepted names. The use of artificial groupings like “aggregates”, “complexes” and “species groups” in alpha-taxonomic treatments is discussed. The taxonomic backbone will receive continued updates and through the Caryophyllales Taxonomic Expert Network, it contributes the treatment of the Plumbaginaceae for the World Flora Online.

Toponymic names, like other field names, are constantly updated and changed according to the process of social development. They are the internal system in the vocabulary of the national language that describes the territory of a certain country, the names of geographical objects. The local people gave names according to the various characteristics and signs of the places where they settled. Names are also given according to the occupation and economic conditions of that country. That is why many toponymic names have a certain meaning. As personal names, toponyms are not units that represent only geographical names, but also units rich in historical and cultural connotations. The semantics of toponyms, in addition to information about a specific object, also shows the relationship of a person to that object or name.This article analyzes the lexical-semantic features and grouping of Kazakh and Chinese toponymic names. Also, the peculiarities of toponymic names in Kazakh and Chinese languages are considered, and it is shown that lexical-semantic grouping plays an important role in revealing the meaning of toponyms. The purpose of the study is to compare toponymic names in Chinese and Kazakh languages and group them according to their lexical-semantic features. As a result, Chinese toponymic names are figurative and metaphorical, while Kazakh toponyms represent real facts, persons, etc. was found to show.The study of Kazakh and Chinese toponymic names not only enriches the theoretical knowledge in this field, but also contributes to the deepening of knowledge about the cultural exchange and development, national values of the two countries, as well as a comprehensive understanding of toponymy.

Abstract This study aims to examine news translators’ para-textual visibility suggested through their names and other indicators of identity in TTs to gain clues to their status within media organizations. For this purpose, (1) whether translators’ identity is given in TTs, (2) what type of information, if any, is provided, and (3) how it is presented in terms of location, size, colour and space is explored. The corresponding data for ST writers, particularly reporters, are also analysed for comparison. The findings suggest that while more than half of the 11 organisations analysed present the translators’ identity in some form in the TTs, the full name is provided only by two organizations with one presenting the title of translators as a reporter and most of the identity indicators are visible only when readers scroll down several times to reach them. The identity indicators of reporters and other contributors, on the other hand, are provided in a very detailed and conspicuous manner. The findings show that translators, despite being one of the key contributors in news production, remain considerably invisible in the very texts they produce, indicating that they are denied the recognition and credit they deserve within media organisations, which can in turn reinforce their low status.

Abstract: This paper presents a comprehensive project that integrates computer vision, natural language processing, and deep learning techniques to enhance object and speech recognition capabilities. The proposed system leverages the OpenCV library to identify objects within an input image, subsequently generating a new image annotated with the names of the recognized objects. Furthermore, the project incorporates the pyttsx3 module to convert the identified object names into speech, providing an additional layer of accessibility. The system extends its functionality by incorporating a contextual summarization component. Upon user input of contextual information related to the recognized objects, the system utilizes a language model, Large Language Model (LLM), to summarize the provided context. This summarization process contributes a Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) element, offering a quick and efficient overview of the given information. The seamless integration of object identification, speech synthesis, and contextual summarization enhances the user experience, making the system versatile and accessible. The proposed solution finds application in various domains such as assistive technology, image recognition, and natural language processing. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness and accuracy of the system, showcasing its potential contributions to the field of machine learning and deep learning application

During the past half century, a wide variety of techniques of microanalysis have been developed to a practical stage and many of these are presently undergoing refinement and improvement. In fact, practically every means of bombarding a specimen with radiation and observing signals from the interaction of this radiation with the specimen has been explored, as shown in Fig. 1. Many of the techniques used in microanalysis today are based on physical principles that were known for many years. But they became practicable only with improved technology, e.g. improved vacuum systems, sources, detectors, lenses, spectrometers, signal amplifiers and computers.A "road map" of the history of microanalysis would contain some of the milestones along the way, similar to the list of significant events in the history of microscopy published in the EMSA Bulletin in Fall of 1983. My own (and highly subjective) list is given in the Table. It is not surprising that many of the key figures contributors on this list have been previous recipients of the EMSA Distinguished Scientist Award (names printed in bold face).

In recent years several papers have shown that different verbal and non-verbal semantic categories can be selectively disrupted by brain damage and that consistent anatomical localizations correspond to each category-specific semantic disorder. This paper aims to suggest that the brain regions typically damaged in a given type of category-specific semantic disorder might be critically involved in processing the kind of information which mainly contributes to organizing that semantic category and to distinguishing among its members. This general hypothesis is discussed taking into account: (a) comprehension and production of object names (nouns) and of action names (verbs) in agrammatic and in anomic aphasic patients; (b) verbal and non-verbal identification of body parts; (c) verbal and non-verbal identification of living beings and of man made artefacts.

English language learning does not only happen within the four corners of the classroom, but it may occur even within the learner‟s immediate community. Learning English can be enhanced through various resources like the available linguistic landscape. According to Landry and Bourhis (1997, p. 25) the term linguistic landscape (LL) is defined as the language of public road signs, advertising billboards, street names, place names, commercial shop signs, and public signs on government buildings combines to form the LL of a given territory, region, or urban agglomeration. As such, it contributes to an additional languagelearning tool for language learners. It is, therefore, the focus of this study to examine the use of the linguistic landscape as a pedagogical resource in teaching and learning English. This study examines explicitly the shop names and signage in Oman. To carry on the study, fifty (50) shop names and signage in Al Buraimi, Oman were collected and analyzed. The findings of the study reveal that the linguistic landscape does not only provide awareness about the English language, but it also enhances the learners‟ English language skills. This study supports the notion that exposing learners to the linguistic landscape provides awareness of the languages used in public signs, which indicate or give evidence of what languages are locally relevant (Kasanga, 2012). This study offers new insights on how classroom activities can be extended to the streets of the learners‟ community.

This paper aims to examine the relationship between language and gender in the Italian language, with specific reference to the names indicating professions. The work is divided into two parts: in the first part a general picture of the situation is outlined through a synthesis of the most significant academic and institutional contributions in the field of language and gender studies in Italy, with particular reference to the Raccomandazioni per un uso non sessista della lingua Italiana by Alma Sabatini. Furthermore, some basic hints are given of the morphological mechanisms of formation of the feminine of nouns that indicate feminine professions. The second part, on the other hand, consists in analysing the presence of the feminine of professional names in two prestigious Italian dictionaries available online: De Mauro and Il Sabatini Coletti. The final objective of the analysis is to examine to what extent recommendations and initiatives aimed at the use of the female gender for professional qualifications have been put into practice.

Although the volume was published in 2010, it still remains one of the most important contributions to a new field of enquiry in the study of language and signage in public spaces initially conceptualised and institutionalised by Landry and Bourhis (1997) as linguistic landscapes (LL). They defined linguistic landscapes as “[t]he language of public road signs, advertising billboards, street names, place names, commercial shop signs, and public signs on government buildings combine to form the linguistic landscape of a given territory, region, or urban agglomeration” (p. 25). As the title of the volume suggests, the aim was to extend the study to consider other semiotic material in place rather than linguistic ones alone. Jaworski and Thurlow prefer the term semiotic landscapes to LL to account for the fact that descriptions of space are not just about language, image and space, but more so about how interlocutors engage with semiotic material including objects in place.

The relationship between language and culture is diverse and stable. Ethnoculture manifests itself most clearly in language. In this regard of great interest is the onymic vocabulary found in folklore works and epic including. This layer of vocabulary reflects the folk mentality, history, culture, religious views of a nation, as well as its ethnic contacts.Among the unique monuments of the national culture of the Buryats is the epic Geser, which appeared, according to most researchers, more than two thousand years ago. In the heroic epic, everything is symbolic: nature, time, space, personages, their actions and motifs. Geser's naming system, his antipodes’ names, various mythological names, toponyms are no exception in this respect. Epic proper names, which are sometimes the only witnesses of events of past years, reveal a great semantic potential. The semantic system of the language, which includes onymic vocabulary, contributes precisely to the recreation of the archaic picture of the world, to the identification of the features of the epic consciousness of people in the distant past. All this makes the study of epic onyms actual and appealing.So the article focuses on the Buryat uligers about Geser which are characterized by numerous names of epic heroes. One of the peculiarities of the eponyms is that they are not one nominative unit, but a verbose hierarchically arranged group of words. The main characters, whose relationships determine the development of the uliger's epic plot, are the main character, his wife or bride (as a rule, there are three of them), his enemies (antipodes) represented by the monsters-Mangadhais, other heroes or khans. The epithetics of their names constitutes a single semantic complex.The article considers the onyms of the Buryat epic Abai Geser Bogdo khaan written from a well-known Buryat folklore teller (uligershin) Alfor Vasilyev. Special attention is given to the semantics, structure and functional value of epic names – theonyms, the names of Geser, other personages, toponyms.The ethnolinguistic analysis based on the structural-semantic, etymological methods allowed concluding that the acsiological content of the epic names is revealed in their ability to perform as unique concepts of the national world picture. No doubt proper names have great potential in revealing the value-aesthetic content of the Buryat epic. They represent spatial-temporal landmarks and symbols of historical, cultural, religious, social, interethnic relations of the Buryats with neighboring ethnic groups over the centuries.

Crataegusazarolus L. has a wide distribution pattern from the western Mediterranean coasts to the eastern parts of Iran with several varieties adapted to local climatic conditions. Crataegusazarolusvar.senobaaensisvar. nov. is described as a new variety from southeast Turkey with characteristic deep leaf sinuses, mostly 3–4 pairs of lobes and leaves ovate-oblong in outline. Two varieties of the species are accepted under the name of Crataegusazarolus and the correct names are published here. CrataegusmonogynaJacq.var.odemisiivar. nov. is described from İzmir, in the western part of Turkey. This new variety is distinguished by its orange fruit colour. An outstanding disjunct distribution pattern has been discovered for the recently described species, Crataegusyaltirikii Dönmez. Updated descriptions and infraspecific identification keys for Crataegusazarolus and Crataegusmonogyna are given and pictures and distribution data for the new taxa are also supplied.

Equatorial Guinea is the only Spanish speaking country on the African continent with Spanish being one of the official languages. The linguistic situation in the region has been closely studied by Russian and foreign linguists, however, toponymy as a whole linguistic layer has never been covered in numerous works on the functioning of the Spanish language in this state. The article presents the first attempt at a linguistic description of the Hispanic place names of Equatorial Guinea. By means of modern electronic systems, Hispanic geographical names of the region have been identified and structured. Along with indicating the historical prerequisites for the formation of toponyms of this type in this African state, the author pays attention to the linguistic situation in the country. Since gaining independence in 1968, the country’s domestic policy has largely focused on returning to African roots and replacing in the 1970s colo-nial geonames by African geonames at the expense of the so-called “authenticity” campaign. However, despite such renaming and the end of the era of Spanish political dominance in the region, the toponymic corpus of Equatorial Guinea in the 2020s contains a large number of Hispanic names, often showing linguistic contacts as blended names with elements from the languages of local African tribes. Calculating the percentage of Spanish toponominations from the total number of geographical units of the region, the author characterizes from a linguopragmatic point of view lo-cal hydronyms, oronyms, insulonyms, limnonyms and other units, both at the macro and micro levels. Numerous examples are given for each of the identified groups. It is noted that descriptive toponyms with a Spanish component, contrary to the tendency common for Spanish conquerors in other regions of the world, is not the most numerous group in Equatorial Guinea. Assumptions are made regarding the etymology of some units. The article contributes to toponymic research in the region and is the first step towards the creation of a toponymic dictionary for Equatorial Guinea.

This paper is concerned with Aotearoa/New Zealand's changing relationship to Antarctica, and the Ross Dependency in particular. Through a consideration of post-colonial theory in the Ross Dependency, it is argued that a productive dialogue about the cultural politics of mainland Aotearoa/New Zealand can be opened up. After some reflections on the post-1945 political and cultural trajectory of the country, attention is given to the place of the Maori and their involvement in the polar continent and Southern Ocean. The adoption of Maori place-names on New Zealand maps of the Ross Dependency is considered further because it helps to illuminate the country's awkward and incomplete post-colonial transformation. Arguably, such an adoption of Maori place-names in Antarctica contributes to a vision of bicultural harmony. However, this is not a view shared by all observers. Developments affecting the crown agency Antarctica New Zealand, alongside recent heritage projects, are scrutinised further in order to consider how Maori–Pakeha relations influence and define contemporary understandings of New Zealand's presence in Antarctica. Finally, the paper briefly contemplates how a trans-Tasman dialogue with Australian scholars might enable further analysis into how geographically proximate settler colonies engage with Antarctica and their associated territorial claims to the continent and surrounding ocean.

R. A. Fisher is perhaps best known for his influential theoretical contributions to the ‘Evolutionary Synthesis’ of the 1930s and 1940s in which biometry was reconciled with Mendelism. It is no accident, I believe, that when historians discuss the ‘Synthesis’, the names R. A. Fisher, Sewall Wright and J. B. S. Haldane are nearly always given in that order. Fisher's 1918 paper ‘The correlation between relatives on the supposition of Mendelian inheritance’ suggested that biometry, which emphasized the distribution of characters based on continuous variation, and Mendelism, which emphasized discontinuous characters, were compatible and could be united to study evolutionary change. If one considered large numbers of discontinuous, Mendelian characters, then statistical biometrical analysis could be conducted. Thus, Fisher argued, biometry and Mendelism need not oppose each other.

The history of Christianity in Africa contains selected information reflecting patriarchal preoccupations. Historians have often downplayed the contributions of significant women, both European and indigenous African. The names of some significant women are given without details of their contribution to the growth of Christianity in Africa. This article considers the contributions of Peggy Hiscock to the growth of Christianity in Zambia. Hiscock was a White missionary who was sent to serve in Zambia by the Methodist Church in Britain. She was the first woman to have been ordained in the United Church of Zambia. Hiscock established the Order of Diaconal Ministry and founded a school for the training of deaconesses in the United Church of Zambia. This article argues that although the nineteenth- and twentieth-century missionary movement in Africa is associated with patriarchy and European imperialism, there were European women missionaries who resisted imperialism and patriarchy both in the Church and society.

Wikipedia broke so many of the rules of reference publishing, which, even if not formally codified, had been widely accepted for many years: the use of (usually named) authorities as expert contributors, and the presence of moderating editors to ensure balanced structure. All this appeared to have been swept away with Wikipedia, and, not least because Wikipedia content is given away rather than sold, the competition between Wikipedia and most general-purpose encyclopedias was a sad and rather one-sided affair. One by one the existing commercial print general encyclopedias admitted defeat; among the latest is Brockhaus, the leading German encyclopedia brand, which ended publication early in 2013.

Michener’s 97th birthday, the Journal of Melittology publishes this special issue tabulating his expansive list of publications, the vast majority of which entail studies on the systematics and biology of bees (Apoidea: Anthophila) and represents some of the most significant contributions to the subject. In total, this treatment covers Michener’s 514 citable items between 1935 and September of the present year (an astonishing eight-decade-long span of publishing!). Many of the works provide descriptions of new taxa and the bibliography is annotated to indicate those novel taxonomic acts included in each publication. To this is added an accounting of all of the species-, genus-, and family-group names established by Michener during this same period, and organized by both taxonomic group and rank. Naturally, given Michener’s lifetime of work devoted to bees, the vast majority of these are of the Anthophila, but it does also include his taxonomic output on Acari, Lepidoptera, and Ichneumonidae (Hymenoptera).

The article contributes to the research into the modern system of surnames of Poles as a culture text which can become a basis for reconstructing community self-narrations. The presented perspective takes into consideration the following assumptions: 1. Narration naturally accompanies cognition. 2. Personal proper names (i.e. anthroponyms) have a unique ontological and epistemological status in the anthropocentric cognitive system. 3. An anthroponym is a message determined by cognitive needs and the system of values of a given linguistic and cultural community. In order to reconstruct narrations embedded in surnames it is proposed that the following steps be adopted: 1) perform sta-tistical analysis concerned with the number of onymic derivation sets, 2) undertake semantic stud-ies considering the level of categorization of appellatives which motivate the creation of surnames, 3) adopt endocentric and exocentric perspectives in the analysis of descriptive functions of anthro-ponyms which belong to particular motivation-formal types.

Peşteli Hüseyin Hisali is known as Budinli or Peşteli Hisâlî. Little is known about his life in the sources. His most important contribution to Ottoman literature is the magazine called Metâli'ü'n-nezâ'ir, which he composed in two volumes with his own handwriting. It is an inevitable neces-sity to make use of magazines in order to make the history of Turkish literature fully formed. The divan or divançes of many poets who made significant contributions to the classical Turkish literature were either not created or survived. In order to reach the poets of these poets and to make evaluations about them, it is necessary to examine the magazines. In the last ten years, academic studies and publications have been made on classical Turkish literature poems or ma-gazines containing only couplets or mufra. This situation is undoubtedly gratifying. We believe that both volumes of Metâli'ü'n-nezâ'ir are noteworthy in terms of containing the poetry examp-les of hundreds of poets of classical Turkish literature. In this two-volume magazine, there are matla examples of Turkish poetry, of poets of Turkish literature that developed in the Ottoman geography and outside the Ottoman geography. There are a total of 27,310 couplets with matte in both volumes of the magazine. This is important in terms of exemplifying and exhibiting an important accumulation. They adopted the Arab and Persian culture-literature styles, which the Turks recognized immediately after their acceptance of Islam, and adapted them to their own literatures. One of these common features of Islamic literatures is the measure of prosody. Metâli'ü'n-nezâ gives important clues about what the full-fledged names of the measure of aruz used in classical Turkish poetry are. In 2011, at Gazi University Institute of Social Sciences, Prof. Dr. Peşteli Hisâlî Metâliü'n-nezâ'ir (Second - Volume) Examination - Text, which we pre-pared under the consultancy of Ahmet Mermer, is included in the full-fledged names of the pro-sody patterns in our doctoral thesis. In this study, which we prepared by making use of our the-sis and other sources, the prosody patterns used in Classical Turkish literature were given toget-her with their names.

As our analysis has showed, the figurative outline of O. Mandelstam’s poem “The Straw” is an expanded intertextual allusion to E. Poe’s story “Ligeia”, largely obscured by a number of semantic transfers to the point of tightness. The identification of the precedent supports of this allusion contributes to a more complete understanding of this text; facts are given in the light of which the name Ligeia might be considered as meaningful; the anacyclicity of the structure of the poem has been clarified. The indicated intertextual background of Mandelstam’s poem casts certain doubt on the euphonic interpretations belonging to: 1) M.L. Gasparov, who believes that when searching for a rhyme, the name Serafita came to the word ubita ‘killed,’ which “led to a string of romantic names”, in particular the name Ligeia; 2) V.V. Musatov, who believes that “it’s not a woman, but the sound of her name, which vibrates, creating a feeling of blissfulness, and from this vibration arises a new series of names: Lenore, Solominka ‘Straw’, Ligeia, Seraphita”. Mandelstam’s poem “The Straw” is written in a high lyrical style. High style is incompatible: 1) with vulgarisms and rude vernacular; 2) with the category of the comic. Factor (1) casts certain doubt on the hint postulated by G. Freudin to the “vulgar expression of erotic content”, which, according to his interpretation, lies at the heart of the Mandelstam’s poem; factor (2) – N.I. Khardzhiev’s supposed connection of this poem with V. Khlebnikov’s comic grotesque “The error of death” and V.V. Ivanov’s alleged connection of the lyrical name the heroines of Mandelstam’s text with a straw, through which the Lady Death in the specified play by Khlebnikov drank cherry juice.

This research underscores the critical role of language representations in warfare, showing how naming can be a robust instrument in psychological war and narrative construction. The paper analyzes the naming practices for weaponry and battles in the Israeli-Hamas conflict, stressing the extensive use of religious and ideological symbolism by both parties. Tracking the historical and cultural contexts behind these conventions, the researchers highlight the great impact of naming on the conflict as a whole. Studying the various names given to weapons and wars, the paper unveils the deeply-rooted religious ideologies and political discourse used by Israel and Hamas. The findings reveal that naming conventions are not random, rather they are strategic tools that aim at legitimizing and obtaining support, as well as reflecting the conflict's sociopolitical dimensions. The study also found that naming practices contributes to constructing identities and justifying actions in the Israeli-Hamas conflict, illustrating the interaction of physical and symbolic elements in military and ideological strategies. In conclusion, the study provides a new perspective on the interdependent relationship between language, history, religion, and warfare.

People are expected to carry out certain roles and duties throughout their lives in a society. The inability of people to carry out their roles and duties in a society due to various factors is defined as “disability.” Considering that there are 1,559,222 disabled individuals in our country, the rate holds an important place within the general population. Each individual is either disabled, has a disabled relative or a candidate for disability. Thus it is necessary to provide suitable conditions to enable disabled individuals live in concert with the society. This study is conducted in order to determine the level of influence of a 28-hour sport and game activity each week, for 14 weeks, on autistic individuals who have weak socializing and communications skills. This research is conducted on 2 male autistic children of a volunteer family during the fall semester of 2014-2015 academic year; this research also includes preliminary test and proof positive through face to face interview with the family. Descriptive analysis and content analysis are used in data analysis. All of the procedures are carried out by qualitative analysis program NVIVO 10. The names of disabled individuals who attended the research are undisclosed. In the end of this research, the statements released during the interviews show that physical education and game activities have an important influence on the development of disabled individuals. In this respect, the statements given at the end of the research are presented as Emotions and Thoughts of the Mother and Emotions and Behaviors of the Children.

This excellent study brings together a number of widely regarded Western
 scholars of Islam as contributors on the nature and history of Islamic studies in
 the American academy. This compilation is part of “The State of Islamic Studies
 in American Universities,” a research project undertaken by the International
 Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT) and the Center for Islam and Public Policy
 (CIPP) between 2004 and 2007. Its findings were first made available in draft
 form on IIIT’s website in 2009 (http://iiit.org/iiitftp/ PDF%27s/Islamic-Studies.
 pdf), where it remains as of writing this review. That draft appears to have
 been substantially complete, and one wonders why it took three years to remove
 a chapter and then add a more refined introduction, a short conclusion, and a
 bibliography. Still, its earlier online availability (free of charge) means that one
 cannot be too critical of its delayed publication.
 This volume brings together some major names in Western Islamic studies,
 including Seyyed Hossein Nasr, John Voll, Farid Esack, and Saba Mahmood,
 and represents important reflections on the state of the field as an
 academic endeavor. Ten essays, varying in length from eleven pages to ones
 almost four times that length, are preceded by a useful introduction and conclusion,
 both of which concisely summarize noteworthy aspects of each essay
 and can serve as a valuable overview for the rushed reader. The study includes
 essays of both a qualitative and quantitative nature, which are generally of
 high quality. The editors state that they seek to inform the lay reader as well
 as scholars in the field, but also feel that the “data and analyses […] will be
 immensely valuable for educational planners and administrators who are interested
 in strengthening programs of Islamic studies in institutions of higher
 learning” (p. xxvii). Given the constraints of space, I restrict serious reflection

The article deals with the present state and prospectives of modern learner’s lexicography cultural aspect. The problems of culturally marked lexical units vocabulary representation are considered, among which the main one is the problem of intercultural communication – the problem of the linguistic and communicants’ sociocultural codes commonality. Thanks to the modeling of the intercultural space of society in the dictionary form, it is possible to overcome barriers in the dialogue of cultures, which, in turn, contributes to the formation of a multicultural personality. The priority characteristics of educational dictionaries for both general and special purposes are given. To solve educational and didactic problems in the educational process, a special role is given to cultural dictionaries, providing an understanding of the relationship between language and culture. The article presents a relevant set of parameters presented to the organization of the microstructure of the vocabulary article of the educational dictionary. Certain restrictions on the selected language material have been identified in accordance with the educational orientation and addressing of the dictionary to a foreign language students. Of particular note is the problem of integrating phraseological units and proper names into the body of the educational dictionary that are not subject to direct translation and referring to equivalent forms. The results of the dictionary culturological commentary content analysis in interaction with other parameters, such as: etymological, historical marking, territorial and social affiliation of the commented culturally significant lexeme, are presented. The problems associated with the reflection in the linguistic dictionary of culturally marked lexical units are identified and ways to solve them are outlined.

INTRODUCTIONThe Brady Medal, the highest award of The Micropalaeontological Society, is given to scientists who have had a major influence on micropalaeontology by means of a substantial body of excellent research and additionally service to the scientific community. It is named in honour of the brothers George and Henry Brady, pioneers of foraminiferal and ostracod research, respectively, both of whose work included landmark studies of material from the Challenger expedition. If the Challenger revolutionized nineteenth century oceanography, then the Glomar Challenger and the Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) did the same for twentieth century micropalaeontology and palaeoceanography. So, it is fitting that the second Brady medal should go to one of the great contributors to DSDP microfossil studies, Katharina von Salis Perch-Nielsen.To use the words of her mother, Katharina is ‘curious, logical, inventive and rebellious, with an extreme sense for justice’. As a researcher, she made outstanding contributions to nannofossil taxonomy, biostratigraphy and palaeobiology. She both carried out an immense body of primary research and synthesized her encyclopaedic knowledge of nannofossils in a series of seminal syntheses, which have provided the basis for subsequent research. Moreover, she played a unique role in encouraging, supporting and facilitating micropalaeontological research and researchers.EARLY STUDIESKatharina was born in 1940 in Zurich, and was brought up there and in Soglio in Graubünden, a high-Alpine municipality in southeastern Switzerland, and commune of origin of the distinguished von Salis family. This method was carried out for two hundred years, and every aspect of the sciences of the Holy Quran formed to be a separate science. One of them was Tafseer i.e. interpretation of the Holy Quran. A lot of scholars were known as “Mufassireen” i.e. the interpreters. One of them was Ibn-i-abi-Hathim who born in 240 AH and got knowledge from the shining scholars of his era and also known for his several well-known expertise and contributions toward Islamic Sciences. He written down a book named as Tafseer Ibn-i-Abi-Hathim. Wherein, he collected the narrative style of interpretation of the Holy Quran and so on his book occupied a great status amongst the interpretations with chain of narrators i.e. تفسیر بالماثور. As it is clear that a scholar at that time was to be known by a huge number and authenticity of his teachers he learned from. He has many teachers of Tafseer, from whom he got the knowledge of tafseer and narrated it in his tafseer. This number is very huge, but we have chosen some selected scholars from whom Ibn-i-Abi-Hathim narrated in his tafseer, to make them introduce to the readers. Furthermore, as it is a case study of a specific area amongst his all teachers, that is why, we’ve acquired descriptive method of research in this article. First we discussed their names in alphabetical order strengthened by their narrations from his tafseer. And at the end the conclusions of the research have been given. This will help the new scholars in sorting out such areas, and will make them know elaborate such kind of questionable areas.

Clusterin (CLU) is a glycoprotein originally discovered in 1983 in ram testis fluid. Rapidly observed in other tissues, it was initially given various names based on its function in different tissues. In 1992, it was finally named CLU by consensus. Nearly omnipresent in human tissues, CLU is strongly expressed at fluid–tissue interfaces, including in the eye and in particular the cornea. Recent research has identified different forms of CLU, with the most prominent being a 75–80 kDa heterodimeric protein that is secreted. Another truncated version of CLU (55 kDa) is localized to the nucleus and exerts pro-apoptotic activities. CLU has been reported to be involved in various physiological processes such as sperm maturation, lipid transportation, complement inhibition and chaperone activity. CLU was also reported to exert important functions in tissue remodeling, cell–cell adhesion, cell–substratum interaction, cytoprotection, apoptotic cell death, cell proliferation and migration. Hence, this protein is sparking interest in tissue wound healing. Moreover, CLU gene expression is finely regulated by cytokines, growth factors and stress-inducing agents, leading to abnormally elevated levels of CLU in many states of cellular disturbance, including cancer and neurodegenerative conditions. In the eye, CLU expression has been reported as being severely increased in several pathologies, such as age-related macular degeneration and Fuch’s corneal dystrophy, while it is depleted in others, such as pathologic keratinization. Nevertheless, the precise role of CLU in the development of ocular pathologies has yet to be deciphered. The question of whether CLU expression is influenced by these disorders or contributes to them remains open. In this article, we review the actual knowledge about CLU at both the protein and gene expression level in wound healing, and explore the possibility that CLU is a key factor in cancer and eye diseases. Understanding the expression and regulation of CLU could lead to the development of novel therapeutics for promoting wound healing.

This paper aims to argue that private equity funds play a critical role in the Korean economy and that their presence, now and in the future is essential. Moreover, domestic private equity funds will be complementary to foreign private equity funds, not a substitute, at lease for the time being. In arguing so, we will look into the investment experiences of foreign private equity funds and see how foreign private equity funds have helped transform the economy in the pose-financial crisis era. We will also look at the domestic private equity funds market co examine the replicability of private equity-driven growth in Korea. The paper will conclude with further recommendations for the growth of the private equity market. In the past five years or so, Koreans have come to be familiar with names such as Carlyle, Newbridge Capital, Lone Star, etc. These are the names of major foreign institutional investment firms that bought out the Korean domestic banks, Koram Bank, Korea First Bank, and Korea Exchange Bank. Recently, with the incident of the Lone Star scandal disclosed in regards to its acquisition of Korea First Bank, the Korean media have given extensive coverage co the issues relating to private equity funds. Especially after the scandals involving foreign investors, there is public discontent about the large volume of foreign private equity funds, mainly in the financial sector, that seem to ‘eat and run’ once increased profits have been made. People have scrutinized investments of this kind with critical eyes. Nevertheless, we should acknowledge the contributions that the foreign private equity funds have played in various sectors of the economy in the pose-crisis period. Foreign funds have invested in troubled Korean firms, understanding any risks involved, and successfully turned them around for the better. To chat end, even if domestic private equity funds that have been set up since 2004 have not yet performed co the market expectation, we have to understand chat they have further roles to play as we anticipate growth of the M&A market in the coming years.

The knowledge of Dexiinae and Tachinidae diversity in the Neotropical Region, in contrast to other regions, e.g., the Palaearctic Region, is in a poor condition. The history of these taxa has gradually increased since the 18th Century from the works of European and North American authors such as Johan C. Fabricius, Christian R.W. Wiedemann, Jean B. Robineau-Desvoidy, Pierre J.-M. Macquart, Jacques M.F. Bigot, Francis Walker, Victor von Röeder, Ermanno Giglio-Tos, Friedrich M. Brauer and Julius E. Bergenstamm, Frederik M. van der Wulp, Charles H. Curran, John M. Aldrich, Charles H.T. Townsend, Henry J. Reinhard and William R. Thompson. It was only in the first half of the 20th Century that scientists born or established in South America began to enter tachinidology. Dipterists like Jean Brèthes and Everardo E. Blanchard from Argentina, Rául E. Cortés Peña from Chile and José H. Guimarães from Brazil, are the most memorable names for, not only to Neotropical Dexiinae, but, indeed for the whole family. Herein, a brief chronological review of tachinidology, with emphasis on Dexiinae and based on a literature review, is given. The history is divided into four periods: the pre-Linnaean period of the 16th and 17th Centuries, the 18th Century, the 19th Century and the first half of the 20th Century. After the first half of 20th Century, the emphasis is focused on European and North American dipterists with an overview of their contributions on Dexiinae taxonomy. Later, with presence of the South American dipterists, the emphasis is directed to them. Then a few notes are given on the Czech Dominik Bilimek, a poorly known collector from the 19th Century and Fritz Plaumann, a well-known German immigrant who collected in Brazil during the earlier 20th Century. Finally, some notes and perspectives about the 21st Century dexiinidology from the Neotropics is briefly discussed.

AbstractThis paper deals with some aspects of English for professional purposes. After a short historical overview of theories related to LSP (language for special purposes), we focus on some of the linguistic peculiarities of English for Specific Purposes. Our aim is to make a synthesis of the main theories and debates upon the issue of specialized languages, as the number of articles and writings on the topic is tremendous. We also wish to make a brief presentation of the most important contributions (still, we have to admit that the list of authors and articles is much longer, we had to make a selection, due to the editorial limitations of this article). We have gathered and synthesized what authors like Cabré, Celce-Murcia, Crystal, Croitoru, Motos, Strevens and others have said and we have also tried to make a comprehensive list of the names given to specialized language or language for specific purposes over time. Still, we have to state that it is not our goal to come up with examples or conclusions regarding our own personal ESP experience and/or previous research. The goal of this present study is to make a synthesis of the theories and writings on the topic of English for specific purposes (i.e. metaelemzés/metaanalysis in Klaudy's words or szekunder kutatás/secondary research in Fóris's words).

This paper employs a multimodal analytical approach in analyzing the theme of exodus in Bob Marley’s ‘Exodus’ album where attention is given to four main areas, namely, the album’s cover design, the employment of lexical items, the use of literary devices as well as aesthetics by which Marley conveys the theme of exodus throughout the album. Findings show that the album’s cover design is symbolically employed to project the theme of exodus. The choice of the gold color as the background as well as the inscription of ‘EXODUS’ in red in the heart of the golden background equivocally reveals Africa’s ‘golden’ contributions to the West while the Africans in the West are ‘bleeding’(red), a reason for which they must embark on an exodus. Lexically, Marley employs content emotion-packed lexical items, namely nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs, to project the theme of exodus. Besides, Marley relies heavily on literary devices such as allusion, equivocation, metaphor, repetition and rhyme as tools for the projection of the theme of exodus in his ‘Exodus’ album. Finally, by deliberate design, the names of the songs of the album, their arrangement as well as their number all aesthetically tell a conscious but beautiful story in the name of the overall theme of exodus in the album by the same name, making Marley’s ‘Exodus’ album not merely a classical musical piece but a discourse masterpiece equivalent to one from a skilled troubadour.

One of the most frequently encountered characters in the mythology of various cultures are household spirits, deities-guardians of the hearth, who have lived side by side with humans since ancient times. In this article, on the basis of Russian and Chinese sources, the authors conduct a comparative analysis of the images of the patrons of the household in such aspects as the names given to them by the bearers of culture, versions of origin, appearance, marital status, functions that these deities performed, rituals of worship. The subject of the research is the images of the Domovoy and God of the hearth of Zao-wang in Russian and Chinese cultures. The aim of the work is to find similarities and differences about Domovoy and Zao-wang, to comprehend the interaction of a person with the domestic spirit in Russia and China, which is relevant in the light of the strengthening of relationship between the two countries and contributes to a better understanding of both Chinese and Russian culture. The novelty lies in the absence of such a comparative study in Russian science. As a result of the work, it was revealed that the characters of the keeper of the hearth in the Russian and Chinese traditions have both similarities and differences. Similar features of home spirits are due to global cultural processes, while their differences are determined by worldview and other features of the regions.

Indoor air temperature (IAT) and indoor relative humidity (IRH) are the prominent microclimatic variables; still, potential contributors that influence the homeostasis of livestock animals reared in closed barns. Further, predicting IAT and IRH encourages farmers to think ahead actively and to prepare the optimum solutions. Therefore, the primary objective of the current literature is to build and investigate extensive performance analysis between popular ML models in practice used for IAT and IRH predictions. Meanwhile, multiple linear regression (MLR), multilayered perceptron (MLP), random forest regression (RFR), decision tree regression (DTR), and support vector regression (SVR) models were utilized for the prediction. This study used accessible factors such as external environmental data to simulate the models. In addition, three different input datasets named S1, S2, and S3 were used to assess the models. From the results, RFR models performed better results in both IAT (R2 = 0.9913; RMSE = 0.476; MAE = 0.3535) and IRH (R2 = 0.9594; RMSE = 2.429; MAE = 1.47) prediction among other models particularly with S3 input datasets. In addition, it has been proven that selecting the right features from the given input data builds supportive conditions under which the expected results are available. Overall, the current study demonstrates a better model among other models to predict IAT and IRH of a naturally ventilated swine building containing animals with fewer input attributes.

Immediately after the independence of South Sudan in 2011, a nationality law was passed that defined citizenship by membership to clearly defined and bounded ethnic groups. To acquire citizenship, the testimony of a ‘next of kin’, taken to be an ‘older blood relative from the father’s line’, was supposed to verify ethnicity and, thus, belonging to the new nation. Citizenship offices were tasked with checking names and assessing life histories. In so doing, they combined the logic of patrilineal names with estimations of lived closeness, creating a complex system of measuring kinship. Based on colonial legacies and methods acquired during the Sudanese civil war, kinship measurements produced new relations, but also fueled ethnic tensions and cemented social inequalities.

The study systematizes the complex and extensive content of the concept of pedagogical strategy, which not only helps scholars realize its importance as a scientific concept, but also contributes to the improvement of the quality and effectiveness of teaching. The article reveals the essence of the concept of “pedagogical strategy” in the context of educational research in Russia and China, describing several views of the scholars on the content of this concept. It is emphasized that modern views of Russian and Chinese scholars on the concept of “pedagogical strategy” have both some common features and some obvious differences. Based on the analysis the following results are given: the commonality is that the pedagogical strategy has a definite goal and is developed in specific pedagogical conditions to perform a specific teaching task, including the choice of methods of teaching activities, preparation of materials and regulation of teacher and student behavior. The article examines the differences between the views of Russian and Chinese scientists on the essence of the concept of “pedagogical strategy”. In addition, the article discusses the similarities and differences in the interpretation of such concepts as “teaching strategy”, “educational strategy”, “pedagogical strategy”, “learning strategy”, “teaching idea”, “teaching design” and “teaching methodology”. Although the definitions of some of these concepts are different in specific words, they may have similar meanings and can be used as synonyms. At the same time, there are other concepts which names are similar, but they represent completely different phenomena. At the end of the article, the author analyzes several essential features of the concept of pedagogical strategies and points out the important role of this concept in describing the learning system.

Lamproite is a rare ultrapotassic alkaline rock of petrological importance as it is considered to be derived from metasomatized lithospheric mantle, and of economic significance, being the host of major diamond deposits. A review of the nomenclature of lamproite results in the recommendation that members of the lamproite petrological clan be named using mineralogical-genetic classifications to distinguish them from other genetically unrelated potassic alkaline rocks, kimberlite, and diverse lamprophyres. The names “Group 2 kimberlite” and “orangeite” must be abandoned as these rock types are varieties of bona fide lamproite restricted to the Kaapvaal Craton. Lamproites exhibit extreme diversity in their mineralogy which ranges from olivine phlogopite lamproite, through phlogopite leucite lamproite and potassic titanian richterite-diopside lamproite, to leucite sanidine lamproite. Diamondiferous olivine lamproites are hybrid rocks extensively contaminated by mantle-derived xenocrystic olivine. Currently, lamproites are divided into cratonic (e.g. Leucite Hills, USA; Baifen, China) and orogenic (Mediterranean) varieties (e.g. Murcia-Almeria, Spain; Afyon, Turkey; Xungba, Tibet). Each cratonic and orogenic lamproite province differs significantly in tectonic setting and Sr–Nd–Pb–Hf isotopic compositions. Isotopic compositions indicate derivation from enriched mantle sources, having long-term low Sm/Nd and high Rb/Sr ratios, relative to bulk earth and depleted asthenospheric mantle. All lamproites are considered, on the basis of their geochemistry, to be derived from ancient mineralogically complex K–Ti–Ba–REE-rich veins, or metasomes, in the lithospheric mantle with, or without, subsequent contributions from recent asthenospheric or subducted components at the time of genesis. Lamproite primary magmas are considered to be relatively silica-rich (~50–60 wt.% SiO2), MgO-poor (3–12 wt.%), and ultrapotassic (~8–12 wt.% K2O) as exemplified by hyalo-phlogopite lamproites from the Leucite Hills (Wyoming) or Smoky Butte (Montana). Brief descriptions are given of the most important phreatomagmatic diamondiferous lamproite vents. The tectonic processes which lead to partial melting of metasomes, and/or initiation of magmatism, are described for examples of cratonic and orogenic lamproites. As each lamproite province differs with respect to its mineralogy, geochemical evolution, and tectonic setting there is no simple or common petrogenetic model for their genesis. Each province must be considered as the unique expression of the times and vagaries of ancient mantle metasomatism, coupled with diverse and complex partial melting processes, together with mixing of younger asthenospheric and lithospheric material, and, in the case of many orogenic lamproites, with Paleogene to Recent subducted material.

Does semantic information in the form of stereotypical names influence participants' perceptions of the appearance of multiracial faces? Asian-Australian and European-Australian participants were asked to rate the appearance of Asian-Australian faces given typically Asian names, European-Australian faces given typically European names, multiracial faces given Asian names, and multiracial faces given European names. Participants rated the multiracial faces given European names as looking significantly ‘more European’ than the same multiracial faces given Asian names. This study demonstrates how socially derived expectations and stereotypes can influence face perception.
