Streszczenie:
Blades usually become blunt as the blade tip suffers wear during cutting, and improving the sharpness retention of steel blades has become an attractive prospect in various industries. In this study, blades were fabricated from commercial high carbon martensitic stainless steels (154CM, 440C and N690) with different contents of alloying elements. 154CM with higher Mo content demonstrated superior capability in sharpness retention to 440C and N690, although these steels exhibit similar chemical composition, carbide phases, microstructure and HRC hardness. Further investigations via SEM and nanoindentation indicated that the faster deterioration of sharpness in 440C and N690 may result from the fatigue peeling of the carbides, which was aggravated by the modulus mismatch between carbide particles and the martensitic steel matrix.

Streszczenie:
Steel-plate composite (SC) walls are comprised of concrete walls sandwiched between steel faceplates located on the exterior surfaces. These faceplates are anchored to the concrete infill using steel anchors and connected to each other using ties. SC walls have been used extensively in the third generation of nuclear power plants and are also being considered for small modular reactors (SMRs) of the future. The American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) has published Supplement No. 1 to AISC N690, which includes Appendix N9 for the design of SC walls in safety-related nuclear facilities. This paper presents the minimum requirements for SC walls and the section detailing provisions from Appendix N9 along with their basis. The minimum requirements include requirements for minimum and maximum SC wall thickness, faceplate thickness, and steel and concrete material strengths. The provisions of Appendix N9 are applicable to SC walls that satisfy these minimum requirements. The design provisions account for the effects of interaction between out-of-plane shear demands (in both x- and y-directions) and the corresponding interfacial shear demands while accounting for the differences in behavior between yielding and nonyielding steel anchors and ties as classified by AISC N690 Supplement No. 1.

Streszczenie:
Structural walls in safety-related nuclear facilities are required to be designed for seismic and accident thermal (due to postulated high-energy pipe break events) loading combination. Current U.S. and international codes provide limited guidance for analysis and design of walls for this loading combination. This paper describes the experimental results and observations from tests conducted on a laboratory-scale (1:4 to 1:5) test unit representing steel-plate composite (SC) walls subjected to combined in-plane (seismic) and accident thermal loading. The test unit was subjected to surface temperatures of up to 450°F in combination with cyclic in-plane loading. Results of similar experiments recently conducted in Japan are also summarized (with surface temperatures up to 570°F). Surface heating combined with the low thermal conductivity and high specific heat of concrete resulted in nonlinear thermal gradients through the thickness of the specimens. These nonlinear thermal gradients and the associated self- or internal restraint led to extensive concrete cracking. This concrete cracking reduced the initial and secant stiffness of the specimens. The initial stiffness of the heated specimens reduced to 30 to 40% of the initial stiffness of the control (unheated) specimen. The secant stiffness of the heated specimens reduced up to 50% of the secant stiffness of the control (unheated) specimen. However, the in-plane shear strength of the heated SC specimens was still approximately 10 to 30% greater than the nominal in-plane shear strength calculated, for the limit state of steel plate von Mises yielding, using AISC N690 equations and measured material properties. Evaluation of the experimental results and observations suggests that the in-plane shear strength of SC walls subjected to typical accident surface temperatures (up to 570°F) can be estimated conservatively using the current provisions of AISC N690. The stiffness for accident thermal loading combinations can be considered to reduce from cracked composite stiffness at ambient temperature to fully cracked—that is, steel-only stiffness as the surface temperature increases up to typical accident value.

In safety-related nuclear structures, steel-plate composite (SC) walls are often used in combination with reinforced concrete (RC) walls or foundations. Appropriate connections are required to transfer force demands from the SC walls to the RC components without the connection failure that is often associated with brittle failure mode. This paper presents a design procedure developed for mechanical connections between SC and RC walls. This procedure implements the full-strength connection design approach in ANSI/AISC N690-18, Specification for Safety-Related Steel Structures for Nuclear Facilities, which requires connections to be stronger than the weaker of the connected walls. This paper also presents the results from experimental and analytical investigations conducted to verify the structural performance of the full-strength SC-to-RC connection. The focus of this paper (Part 1) is on the evaluation of the performance, strength, and ductility of SC wall–to–RC wall mechanical connections subjected to out-of-plane flexure. The results include global force-displacement responses, observations on concrete crack propagation, as well as applied force-strain responses of the connection region. The experimentally observed and analytically predicted results verify the conservatism of the proposed design procedure.

Streszczenie:
Problem statement. One of the main requirements for the blade is to achieve significant indicators of corrosion resistance and elasticity, the ability to withstand lateral and contact loads. Thanks to the combination of high-carbon and stainless steels with the help of pit welding, the effect of zone hardening is achieved in the subsequent heat treatment. Zone hardening technology is a combination of different hardness indicators on one knife blade, which leads to a significant increase in the elasticity and durability of the blade, reduces the risk of hardening cracks. Mine welding allows you to combine into a composite steels that have a high content of carbon (С = 0,9…1 %, С = 0,4…0,45 %) and chromium (Cr = 13…14 %), which with an ordinary electric arc method is practically impossible to do. High carbon equivalent and chromium doping complicates existing welding processes. With the appropriate modes of thermoplastic deformation, we get in the zone of forge welding a monolithic connection of two steels at the atomic level, which in itself is already a composite (combination of two materials with different properties to obtain a third starting material). Materials and methods. Etching the blade in an acid solution. To obtain blanks for blacksmithing (pit welding), we took steel bar ШХ15Ш (ТУ141594 DSTU4738:007) Ø – 20 mm, length L − 80 mm for the cutting part of the blade, steel bar 40Х13 DSTU 7838:007, for covers Ø − 20 mm, L − 150 mm. The total weight of the package is 0,42 kg. The results of the experiment. When conducting four experimental attempts to determine the tempering temperature-time regimes for a composite knife blade (ШХ15Ш in 40Х13 facings), the following parameters were obtained: 1. heating temperature 260…270 °С; 2. exposure for 1,8…2 hours; 3. cooling − air. The hardness of the blade is 58−59 HRC, the cutting part is 52−54 HRC of the coating. With such indicators, the maximum indicators of wear resistance of the cutting edge and high indicators of blade elasticity were obtained. For steel n690: 1. heating temperature for tempering 200…220 °С; 2. exposure for 1 hour; 3. cooling − air. Conclusions. Knife blades are proposed to be made by manual forging, without the use of pneumatic and hydraulic hammers, to ensure the purity of the experiment. The work includes calculations of heat treatment regimes, analysis of the microstructures of the obtained monosteel and composite, economic feasibility, advantages and disadvantages of one method of obtaining a blade blade over another.

Abstract Background Plasmodium falciparum, the deadliest causative agent of malaria, has high prevalence in Nigeria. Drug resistance causing failure of previously effective drugs has compromised anti-malarial treatment. On this basis, there is need for a proactive surveillance for resistance markers to the currently recommended artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT), for early detection of resistance before it become widespread. Methods This study assessed anti-malarial resistance genes polymorphism in patients with uncomplicated P. falciparum malaria in Lagos, Nigeria. Sanger and Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) methods were used to screen for mutations in thirty-seven malaria positive blood samples targeting the P. falciparum chloroquine-resistance transporter (Pfcrt), P. falciparum multidrug-resistance 1 (Pfmdr1), and P. falciparum kelch 13 (Pfk13) genes, which have been previously associated with anti-malarial resistance. Results Expectedly, the NGS method was more proficient, detecting six Pfmdr1, seven Pfcrt and three Pfk13 mutations in the studied clinical isolates from Nigeria, a malaria endemic area. These mutations included rare Pfmdr1 mutations, N504K, N649D, F938Y and S967N, which were previously unreported. In addition, there was moderate prevalence of the K76T mutation (34.6%) associated with chloroquine and amodiaquine resistance, and high prevalence of the N86 wild type allele (92.3%) associated with lumefantrine resistance. Conclusion Widespread circulation of mutations associated with resistance to current anti-malarial drugs could potentially limit effective malaria therapy in endemic populations.

Streszczenie:
After a long period of disrupted communication, the years 1918-21 saw a rapid infiltration of Russian post-revolutionary culture into German progressive circles. In the thriving book market of Berlin, resourceful apologists like El Lissitzky and Il'ya Erenburg found conditions favourable to the diffusion of their ideas and played a critical role in encouraging pro-Soviet sentiment among the local vanguard. Their cosmopolitan enthusiasm, shared by a number of artists throughout Europe, bolstered hopes for co-operation between the modernist forces of all countries. For a brief while. Constructivism became a rallying point for those artists who had faith in their ability to foster cultural transformation and felt a common purpose in creating an environment conducive to social harmony. Various initiatives were taken to lay the foundation for a truly cohesive effort but yielded only temporary alliances. Serving as alternative platforms from which to gain influence and individual recognition, periodicals and slim book publications ultimately provided the main element of continuity in the attempt to found a Constructivist International. By 1925, those who had devoted most energy to this collective project had distanced themselves from a strong identification as Constructivists on the Berlin art scene and struck out in new directions.

Marchevska, Elena. "The screen as a site of division and encounter". Thesis, University of Northampton, 2012. http://nectar.northampton.ac.uk/6130/.

Streszczenie:
This study is a practice-based exploration of the screen as a border site, where the concepts of division and encounter are performatively examined. My research strategy is shaped by applying autoethnographic performance strategies to the mediated space of the screen. Media materials (photos, videos and blog entries) are created with mobile media devices used in performative situations, offering a theoretical framework originating in practice. The main argument is that the screen is an assemblage site, where the notions of division and encounter can be artistically explored. Furthermore, the screen is explored as an object, as a metaphor and as an idea. By linking the Latour notion of “assemblage” with Colley’s exploration of the personal use of mobile screens (“autobiometry”), and Ettinger’s notion of “borderspace” as site of artistic encounter, the practices presented in this thesis are located in a field that blurs the boundary between the personal and art; autobiography and autoethnography; technology and identity. In so doing, this thesis expands on previous explorations such as “boundary event” (Trinh T. Minh-ha 1999); “soft mastery” (Turkle 1995); and “screen-reliant art” (Moldoch 2010;). In the performative media materials created for this thesis, the screen is explored through a “processual approach” (Bacon, 2006). This enabled me to examine the nature of interaction with the screen through embodied reflexive practice. This approach firmly places the work in the experiential or performative realm. Key practices that are discussed in this thesis include among others, an earth body performative project by Ana Mendieta (Cuba/USA) entitled Silueta series (1973-1980), a live art work by Tanja Ostojic (Serbia/Germany) called Looking for a husband with EU passport (2000-2005) and my own performative media pieces, Valid until… (2010) and The place where we were last together (2011).

Streszczenie:
The aim of this thesis was to generate a series of propositions identifying the elements most likely to be found in 'durable' employee-owned organisations. Previous studies in the field had often been marked by the assumption that benefits associated with employee share ownership, including reduced 'social divisions' between employees and their managers and a greater propensity among the former to work harder, would follow in all employee-owned enterprises, Few researchers had addressed the 'empirical reality' and 'diversity' of individual employee share ownership conversions and the circumstances in which systems had been created, implemented and subsequently managed by organisations.' Areas covered by the thesis included an examination of employee participation structur'es in different employee share ownership environments and 'feelings of ownership and commitment' among employee shareholders. The thesis also considered whether the 'traditional' trade union role would be undermined by new forms of representation and participation resulting from the introduction of employee share ownership programmes, Applying an extensive 'multimethod' approach, quantitative and qualitative data were collected over an eighteen-month period from six organisations in the UK bus industry -regarded by the mid 1990s as the most important locus of employee-owned companies. In 1994, some twenty-five UK bus companies were defined as 'employee-owned', generally consisting of non-managerial employees holding at least 25 per cent of the equity in their work places, Results from the investigation revealed that 'direct monetary investment' by employees and extensive information and communication programmes were among the elements characterising durable employee-owned organisations, Preservation of the 'traditional' trade union role was also evident, with employee shareholders generally content to participate in company matters through their union, More broadly, the thesis concluded that recognition in future research of the interplay of different variables was essential to increase understanding in relation to employee commitment, participation and industrial relations outcomes.

Maycock, Eno Amasi. "An investigation into performance based pay in Nigerian financial institutions". Thesis, University of Bedfordshire, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10547/134355.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
Purpose: To critically investigate the effect/impact the implementation of both team and individual based pay has when responses are measured in terms of teamworking, job satisfaction, culture and commitment in 2 Nigerian financial institutions. Design/methodology/approach: The study presents the first empirical case-study research carried out in Nigeria. The data are based on 2 Nigerian financial institutions surveys from 2002 to 2006. The analysis addresses the impact of the introduction of PRP within these institutions. Questionnaires were sent out to the 226 employees. Interviews and focus groups were also carried out with both managers and employees across both organisations. Findings: The findings indicate the importance of valence for monetary incentives, the instrumentality of performance for the monetary incentives and clear individual and group objectives for improving performance. On the basis of the analysis of the data from employees covered by the scheme, the results suggests that there are clear indications that it has raised motivational levels, though employees prefer working with individual performance related pay than in teams, but would not mind working in teams if it is linked to a reward, but the responses indicate that individual performance related pay has damaged the concept of team working. The results indicated a positive link of PRP having a positive effect with employees on higher grade levels; this result support other results from a number of earlier UK studies. The results also indicate that the introduction of PRP can enhance culture change and enhanced performance but may not ultimately lead to commitment from employees. The findings also indicate a positive link between PRP, improved individual and organisational performance, change in culture and job satisfaction. Though the research indicates positive outcomes from one organisation it also indicates negative outcomes from the other organisation. Why would that occur, as both organisations operate the same form of individual PRP? It leads the researcher to conclude that PRP must be modified to take into account the cultural (national & organisational) implications of the transference western management practices into non-western organisations. The research finishes by listing out implications for management and recommendations. Research limitations: As this study utilises data from Nigerian financial institutions only, its results cannot be generalised to other sectors and countries characterised by different cultures and contexts. However, what is critical though is that the approach used to finding these results can be applied in a wide variety of situations, thus enabling the examination of external validity. ORIGINALITY/VALUE – This study is one of the first to explore the effect/impact of the introduction of performance related pay in Nigerian financial institutions and reflecting on the historic cultural context of gift giving and culture within organisations and the impact this has on the success or failure of PRP schemes. It also provides a new empirical evidence on the use of performance related pay. The results also show a link between the introduction of performance related pay and a change in the psychological contract from a relational contract to a transactional psychological contract, where commitment (bought) and loyalty is based on the monetary aspects of the relationship. The results supports an interpretation of incentive pay as motivated by expectancy theory and provides new evidence on the relationship between the success of performance related and its use by employees as a bargaining tool for salary increases and new job roles. Its implications should be of interest to human resource managers when designing reward strategies for their organisations.

Howard, Susan. "A Christian perspective on enabling spiritual formation in relation to work". Thesis, University of Winchester, 2017. http://repository.winchester.ac.uk/721/.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
This thesis is an action research investigation into the influence of my Christian habitus on my consultancy practice. My research question: How does my Christian faith inform the work I do? is located within the academic field of Spirit at Work. The complexity and difficulties of my professional practice are explored using the literature on Christian spirituality. My investigation uses the research method of practical theology to explore: my own Christian perspective; my role as a spiritual mentor; the nature of spiritual formation; and, faith in relation to work. The analytical methods of theological reflection, narrative inquiry, and autoethnography support the critical reflection. Five themes emerge: the evangelical basis of my Christian perspective; an understanding of the grace of God; the consideration of resistance as sin; strategies to enable spiritual formation; and complex combinations of faith in relation to work. This study has enabled me to interrogate my approach to spiritual formation in relation to work. My inquiry in a variety of contexts – with colleagues, one individual, and with a client –has developed my ability as a reflexive practitioner, and has strengthened my vocation as a spiritual mentor. I have used the Holistic Development Model (HDM) to underpin my approach to spiritual mentoring, and created a Christian interpretation of it. Spiritual formation is explored through the topics of: church, faith, purpose and mission using scripture, adventure and leadership, and difficulty and struggle. The research provides insights into my work as a professional consultant in the area of leadership development. My reflexive learning, combined with participative inquiry, provides an insider perspective on living within an evangelical Christian worldview. Difficulties over how to interpret Christian faith in work contexts are explored, particularly with regard to inclusivity. The research links spiritual formation with leadership, concluding that, in my practice, faith takes precedence.

Cheney, Jacqueline Patricia. "The mythology of the uncanny : as theory and practice in Australian contemporary art". Phd thesis, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/1885/150841.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
A sensation raw and primal, unwelcome yet not wholly alien but peculiarly familiar, neither a penetrating roar nor shriek from the depths but a more eerily pervasive murmuring, without being discredited as irrational but instead being elevated within academia - the mythology of the uncanny persists. This inquiry focusses on the phenomenon of the uncanny and its exemplification in the visual arts. Whilst extant literature relates uncanniness to the broader field of aesthetics, especially enlarged upon in literature, film-studies and architecture, it is a comparatively neglected topic in the context of visual arts. It is occasionally touched upon in texts concerning an artist's work, but usually very synoptically. Yet much art aligns to readings of uncanniness. For example, Sally Smart's evocatively uncanny work attracts descriptive smatterings about it without adequate enunciation against a critical theoretical framework. Such a framework, newly developed here, takes into account Sigmund Freud's pivotal essay of 1919 whilst providing new interpretations of it and its subsequent plethoric discourse. Furthermore, this framework incorporates entirely different viewpoints, including Existentialist versions of uncanniness centred upon Martin Heidegger's and Jean-Paul Sartre's theories. Whilst being an evolution of the extensive discourse, my framework assimilates otherwise disparate notions of the uncanny effect and its sensations, then applies it contemporaneously. In writing from the secularised worlds of Freudian psychoanalysis and Existentialism, religion, spirituality and mysticism are areas not intentionally ignored nor sidelined as unworthy of consideration. Nevertheless the scope of this dissertation required curtailing thereby making the exclusion of the non-secular a necessity. Psychophysical, neural and cognitive characteristics of viewers' sensory perception of artwork (in relation to evoking uncanniness) are other exclusions, and whilst I touch on various socio-political aspects of the uncanny, it likewise requires greater regard than what is allowed for herein. This is essentially an interpretative analysis which applies a more broadly developed framework to six Australian artists whose work is persuasively uncanny: Ron Mueck, Patricia Piccinini, Sally Smart, Lawrence Daws, Pat Brassington and Bill Henson. These case-studies are structured into three chapters: the first concentrates on three-dimensional, figurative sculpture (Mueck and Piccinini); the next section looks at siting the uncanny in two-dimensional landscapes, specifically the locale of Australia, a land where the uncanny is said to loom large (Smart and Daws); whilst the final section focuses on uncanny 'filmic' surfaces or photo-based media (Brassington and Henson}. This form of analysis is founded on either the artist's self-identification with the topic and/or is based on consistent commentary about their artwork eliciting uncanniness, except Henson, who receives little discussion in relation to uncanniness, but, as demonstrated, epitomises it nonetheless. Examining their art against a contemporary theoretical framework thus addresses a lacuna of critical, academic insight into the uncanniness of visual art, before drawing conclusions about some conceptual, technical and formal differences and similarities.

Streszczenie:
This research project examines certain forms of exchange and reciprocity in participatory art from a practitioner's perspective. It refers to aspects of Nicolas Bourriaud's Relational Aesthetics, touches on the food works of Rirkrit Tiravanija and uses practice-led research to examine audience interactions. In each research event the audience was given the opportunity to participate in some form of exchange, mostly involving food. Eight small research events and one larger work (staged in four editions) were produced. These works are examined as a means of gaining further knowledge of the stagecraft involved in my research practice and developing theoretical frameworks that can be used to better explain the inteactions occurring between people during these events. The outcomes from this investigation include a practical body of technical knowledge in making participatory art. The development o fthis expertise in practice-oedresearch can be seen in the increasing complexity of the research events, culminating in the final participatory event for examination. Tools were also developed, which focus on the indirect and direct reciprocal outcomes expected by participants ande artist, based on their engagement. These tools can equally be applied to the deconstruction of existing works to examine the mechanics of interaction or for the planning of future works.

Streszczenie:
Appendix N9 to AISC N690s1 presents the design provisions for steel-plate composite (SC) walls in safety related nuclear facilities. AISC N690s1 is Supplement No. 1 to AISC N690-12 specification for safety related steel structures in nuclear facilities and was published in October 2015. This paper discusses the outline of Appendix N9 as well as how the appendix can be used for the design of SC wall structures. Appendix N9 establishes the minimum requirements that SC walls need to meet in order for the specification to be applicable. The requirements include minimum and maximum wall thickness and steel reinforcement ratio. Detailing requirements for SC wall panel sections are also discussed. The faceplate slenderness requirement to prevent the limit state of buckling before yielding is provided. Steel anchor requirements are based on developing adequate composite action, and preventing interfacial shear failure. Requirements for tie bars connecting the steel plates (faceplates) are provided to prevent splitting failure and out-of-plane shear failure. The detailing and design provisions for regions around openings in SC walls are also included. Appendix N9 provides a method of checking the design of SC walls for impactive and impulsive loads. A discussion of the analysis requirements for SC walls is presented. The provisions include effective stiffnesses, accident thermal loading and model parameters for analysis. The design strength equations for axial tension, axial compression, out-of-plane shear, out-of-plane flexure, in-plane shear, and for combined in-plane forces and out-of-plane moment demands are parts of the provisions of the appendix. The provisions also include interaction equations for evaluating tie bars resisting demands due to combination of out-of-plane and interfacial shear forces. Performance requirements for the anchorage of SC walls to concrete basemat, SC wall-to-wall connections and SC walls to floor slab connections are given in the appendix. The provisions also include requirements for fabrication, inspection, and quality control of SC walls constructed for safety-related nuclear facilities.

Streszczenie:
Steel-plate composite (SC) walls and associated connections can be designed based on the provisions of Appendix N9 to AISC N690s1. AISC N690s1 is Supplement No. 1 to AISC N690-12 specification for safety related steel structures in nuclear facilities and was published in October 2015. AISC is currently in the process of developing a design guide to further enable the use of this specification. This design guide will explore the provisions of this specification in detail and discuss different possible design methodologies. SC wall details at the beginning of the design process are based on typical plant layouts, shielding requirements and prevalent practices. The spacing of tie bars and steel anchors in SC wall needs to ensure the faceplate does not undergo buckling before steel yielding. The steel anchor additionally need to be spaced to ensure that (i) interfacial shear failure does not occur before out-of-plane shear failure, and (ii) the yield strength of the faceplates is developed over the development length. The tie bars need to have sufficient tensile strength to prevent splitting failure of SC walls. The elastic analysis of the SC walls is performed using a finite element analysis. The analysis needs to consider cracked transformed stiffnesses and equivalent material properties. The analysis will be conducted for operating thermal and accident thermal load combinations. The individual demands and the combination of demands need to be compared with the available strengths. The SC walls need to be adequately detailed for openings, meet construction and fabrication tolerances, and satisfy the Quality Assurance and Quality Control requirements. The designed SC walls needs to be safe for impactive and impulsive loads. SC wall panel may need to be (i) anchored to basemat, (ii) connected to another SC wall panel, or (iii) connected to RC slab. The SC connections can be designed as full strength connection or over strength connections. The connection needs to have a well-defined force transfer mechanism. The connection required strength is determined from the design demands of SC walls and the connection design philosophy. The available strength is determined from the individual strengths of connectors participating in the force transfer mechanism.
