Streszczenie:
This study aims to describe the way lesbians interact with the environment where the majority of them are Muslims and the factors that influence a person to become a lesbian. The method used is a qualitative method with a case study approach. The informants of this study were four lesbians who lived in the city of Banda Aceh. The results of this study indicate that there are several things that underlie social interactions that shape lesbian behavior in an environment where the majority of Muslims are Muslims, that is family factors, fun, and trauma. The way lesbians adapt and run a partner relationship is the same as for heterosexual couples in general. However, for a more intimate relationship, this lesbian couple avoids their daily activities, then changes their appearance like men so that people don't suspect them.

The article presents the results of the development and approbation of the scale of psychological essentialism (belief in invariability of group membership). The results of confirmatory factor analysis conducted on eight different groups (ethnic (Russians / Tajiks / Jews), gender groups (men / women), homosexuals (gay / lesbians) and religious groups (Orthodox / Muslim)) (n = 897), demonstrated the good fit to empirical data. The multi-group confirmatory factor analysis revealed that the different groups measured on the scale, can be compared with each other within a single category. The scale shows good convergent and discriminant validity. On the one hand, psychological essentialism associated with group entitativity, group identification, right-wing authoritarianism, social dominance orientation and justification the social hierarchy; on the other hand there are not correlation between the psychological essentialism and open to experience and attitude to novelty.

This article examines the indirect impacts of hate crimes on lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender and Muslim communities in the United Kingdom. Based on 34 qualitative interviews, we explore both the perceived meaning of ‘community’ in the context of targeted victimization and the emotional and behavioural effects that anti-lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender and Islamophobic hate crimes have on other members of the victim’s group. Building on previous quantitative data undertaken as part of a larger programme of research, this study helps to explain how and why hate crimes have significant indirect consequences on two distinct but commonly targeted communities. The focus on lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender and Muslim communities allowed us to draw out similarities and commonalities across different groups, further enhancing the understanding of the impacts of hate crime. In particular, the article highlights how for many lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender and Muslim people feelings of anger and anxiety about hate crimes were linked to enhanced levels of empathy towards those that they share a group identity with. These empathic bonds often gave rise to a sense of ‘shared suffering’, with participants frequently feeling connected to group members worldwide through their common experiences of hate and prejudice. Although group identity was important to many participants’ sense of belonging to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender or Muslim communities, it was clear that the most profound impacts of hate crime were experienced when incidents occurred within someone’s local area. This highlighted the importance of location as a key variable in understanding both the meaning of ‘community’ and the indirect impacts of hate crime.

Qanun Jinayah, being a legal framework based on Islamic principles, must prioritize justice and be focused on safeguarding the rights of all citizens, especially the minority non-Muslims in Aceh. According to the 2021 data from the Banda Aceh Government, the religious composition of the population of Aceh is as follows: 98.91% are Muslims, 0.79% are Protestants, 0.19% are Catholics, and 0.11% are Buddhists. The objective of the essay was to conduct a comparative analysis of the criminal laws applicable to non-Muslims in Aceh Province and Brunei Darussalam. The focus was on examining whether non-Muslim people in Aceh and Brunei, where Islamic criminal law is enforced, engage in illegal activities. The research indicates that in Brunei, besides flogging, there are other forms of punishment as well, such as amputation of hands and feet, incarceration, and stoning. The application of criminal law is more extensive for non-Muslims in Aceh compared to Brunei. Non-Muslims in Brunei are subject to only two criminal statutes, namely adultery and khalwat. Meanwhile, in Aceh, crimes committed by non-Muslims encompass seven specific offenses, namely khamar (consumption of alcohol), maisir (gambling), khalwat (close proximity between unmarried individuals of opposite genders), ikhtilat (mixing of genders in public spaces), liwath (homosexual acts), musahaqoh (lesbian acts), and qadzaf (false accusation of illicit sexual relations). It is important to note that these seven offenses are not governed by the Criminal Code. However, the procedural legislation of Aceh Qonun Jinayat still requires more regulation to establish a process. The procedural law of Qanun Jinayat does not impose any limitations on the means by which non-Muslims might express their voluntary submission, nor does it specify the stage at which such a statement must be made. For non-Muslims, this criterion becomes a question of legal certainty.

The study falls within the scope of literature review, where all acquired data sources are analyzed in-depth. Previous research findings are also incorporated into this study, supported by books, journals, and other scholarly works related to the topic. The research results indicate that various perceptions emerge in society regarding LGBT behavior. The reasons provided by various parties, including LGBT individuals and activists, contribute to the proliferation of pros and cons among the public. Some oppose LGBT behavior, arguing that it goes against prevailing norms, both religious and cultural. On the other hand, some support LGBT behavior, justifying it as a form of freedom to express one's rights.

This study investigates the complex ways in which queer Muslim women with origins from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) negotiate belonging and selfhood in France. Drawing on a three-month long digital ethnography, I employ an intersectional approach to explore the juxtaposition of “Muslim” and “lesbian/ bisexual” identities and to answer the question, “How do queer Muslim immigrant women negotiate and conceptualize their identities in contemporary France?” As a marginalized group within a marginalized minority of immigrants from the MENA region, queer Muslim immigrant women have been overlooked in scholarship, public discourses, politics, religious, LGBTQ+ spaces, and religious spaces. This research addresses this gap by exploring the identity-related struggles of queer Muslim immigrant women in France and contributes to studies on Muslim subjectivities, immigration, and gender. Based on my findings, I argue that queer Muslim immigrant women in France negotiate their identities through reconfiguring “secular” and “Muslim” identities and queering religious texts. This negotiation takes place, in part, by using social media to connect with others who share a similar conceptualization of their identities within digital spaces.

In this thesis, women who identify as both queer and Muslims living in North America tell their stories of family, religion, and home. These immigrants and first generation Westerners describe their identities in an effort to acknowledge the difficulties that can accompany being both Muslim in the diaspora in a time when religious and political tensions are aimed at the Middle East. While each has a unique life history, the participants represented here challenge assumptions about the "inherent" contradictions that are assume to exist for those who are both Muslim and queer due to constructions of Islam as sexually and socially conservative. They also offer insight into the usefulness of the current international LGBTQ movement for Muslim lesbians. Using the in-depth interviews from eight women, as well as several first-person published narratives, the aim of this research is to explore how each of these individuals to experience their identities in the diaspora.

Streszczenie:
Applying a queer Muslim feminists lens, this thesis interrogates ways in which a heterosexual world-view appropriates the domain of sexuality within two specific Muslim contexts. The study focuses on, is informed and enriched by the experiences of Queer Muslim women who navigate within the contextual spaces they inhabit, multiple sites which ultimately propel them to question and contest the heterosexual norms that they are expected to repeatedly perform in the name of religion. Through their questioning, they name the various challenges they experience and the strategies they employ in navigating realms of family, state and society, as well their relationship with the Divine. This study, both foregrounds and contributes to understanding Muslim queer women's subjectivity in the production of religious meaning. More succinctly, this thesis contributes to appreciating how Queer Muslim women understand their existence in the face of religious and societal criticism, and how their experiences can serve as the threshold from which to formulate ethically and theologically enriched considerations deeply rooted in the Qur'ān. By looking at two specific contexts, namely Malaysia and Lebanon, this thesis carefully uncovers multiple sites of oppression, layer by layer. The purpose is to lay bear the political personality of states, which often employ religion to coerce those it deems different and thus a threat, in this case to standards of sexual morality. In direct tension with the two nation-states in question, are alternative fringe actors who occupy contested middle spaces. It is from these crucial middles spaces i.e. spaces of potential friction and tension that subliminal spaces for dialogue and discussion then arise. Finally, remaining within an Islamic frame of reference, this thesis takes a nuanced route via Queer Theology, to argue that alternative queer sexual subcultures need not be a source of fear, or threat, or condemnation, but can quite possibly and realistically live alongside a diverse range of sexual subjectivities, ethically and conscientiously, no more, no less than anyone who defines or sees themselves as Muslim.

This thesis argues that in North America since the late 1980s, young women's interest in feminism has been expressed through participation in feminist music subcultures. The project provides an overview of the studies of culture, musical subculture, and gender and music making, as well as an historical context of feminism and a discussion of the relationship between second and third wave feminism.
The first case study explores Riot Grrrl's roots in the DIY activism of DC hardcore punk, its links to the female-oriented indie music scene of Olympia, Washington, and the subculture's use of alternative media. The second study examines efforts to integrate queer politics into third wave feminism through lesbian punk rock music subculture. The final study of electronic feminist punk rock examines how young feminists use alternative media such as zines, internet message boards, web sites, music making, and performance to educate young women about sexual abuse and homophobia.
Analysis of the Riot Grrrl, lesbian punk rock, and electronic feminist punk rock subcultures demonstrates how young women claim spaces for their own feminist politics, even if they have gone relatively undetected by the mainstream culture.

The purpose of this research was to look into the issues one might encounter as a gay and lesbian Muslim with especial focus on the individual experience. I was interested in analyzing the dynamics of one's sexual identity interconnecting with one's religious identity with the assistance of identity theory, personality and culture concepts. I interviewed three different individuals who are all practicing Muslims and live openly as gay in their community, and gathered secondary resources to gain insights from gay, lesbian and transgender Muslims from other communities. The research disclosed individuals’ perceptions on the legitimacy of homosexuality in Islam and their lived experiences regarding their sexuality and the role their culture has played.

This thesis is an exercise in responsibility regarding my actions as an architect. It is based upon the belief that architecture is a product conveying culture. While architecture can convey culture, it also has the potential to shape and facilitate change q in culture. Therefore, one can view the architect as more than a technician, making architecture stand and work properly, or an artist, concerned with the aesthetic/architectonic qualities of architecture, but rather as an active entity who can both convey and change cultural values through the built environment. The struggle in this thesis regarding responsibility has been to make my role more than an active entity in culture, but a consciously active entity in culture. Since I have long viewed culture as a political product and one's existence in culture as a political act, then one’s responsibility as an architect could be to make architecture as the conscious embodiment of a political ideology. For me, feminism is the political ideology, and Liberative Architecture is the conscious embodiment.

This thesis examines the seven song and/or choral settings of Sappho’s poetry by contemporary women composers Carol Barnett, Sheila Silver, Elizabeth Vercoe, Liza Lim, Augusta Read Thomas, Mary Ellen Childs, and Patricia Van Ness. Each composer has set Sappho’s poems in her own creative and artistic interpretation through diverse modern musical styles, giving the Greek poetess a modern, gendered female voice. This paper presents connections between the poetry chosen, its themes and interpretations, as well as the expressive musical devices employed. The various methodological approaches include historical and textual criticism, sociomusicology, and gender and sexual studies. The setting of Sappho’s poetry and the commonalities of the poetic themes set to music help us understand how modern women view Sappho’s image, hear, and give voice to the poetess of the ancient world.

Abstract All of us engaged in the transmission of musical culture today face a central problem: too many competing voices and not enough time or space to accommodate them all. The recent explosion of postmodernist critical theory from musicology, ethnomusicology, gay and lesbian studies, feminist, literary, and cultural criticism, and other disciplines previously thought to be only tangential to the study of music has exposed the hegemony of the dead, white, European, heterosexual, male musical canon; as a result, the canons of women, non-Western peoples, gays and lesbians (to name but a few) have finally been resurrected from their purgatory of otherness.

This overview of German-language LGBTQ+ comics deepens and complements studies of the LGBTQ+ European comics and bande dessinée scene. Tracking the development of German queer comics from their consolidation after the Weimar era’s crackdowns, the Nazis’ efforts to eradicate gays and lesbians, and the World War II-era American and British soldiers’ importation of their own pop culture including comics, this concise historical overview connects the reemergence of lesbian and gay subcultures in Germany to key LGBTQ+ German-language comics that commented on the zeitgeist, made queer lives visible, and gauged the gradual social and political acceptance of LGBTQ+ people in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. From the politically inflected feminist and lesbian magazines of the 1960s to more commercially-oriented gay publications that cropped up in the 1970s, from German comics’ confrontation with AIDS in the 1980s to the influence of Alison Bechdel’s comics on a new German “queer” sensibility in the 1990s and after, this history concludes by mapping the varied contemporary German-language LGBTQ+ comics scene in which queerness is at once mainstream and subversively underground, worthy of museum retrospectives while still being precarious and experimental.

Abstract The single largest surge of women into rock music-making in the UK was in the late 1970s and early 1980s as a result of two phenomena: the ‘moment’ of punk rock and 1970s second wave feminism (then known as the Women’s Liberation Movement). This sudden increase in the number of women playing in rock bands was recognized by the media at the time in a flurry of articles about ‘women in rock’. Similar media excitement greeted the Riot Grrrl phenomenon of 1993 but, in Britain unlike America, Riot Grrrl remained little more than a label lazily applied by journalists to any and every young women’s rock band and rejected by all but a handful. Insofar as Riot Grrrl did exist beyond its media fabrication, it can be seen as the boisterous youthful offspring of punk and feminism which I shall discuss after dealing with its far more significant parents.

Yet the subject is practically ignored by nearly all who study that culture or teach about it. Sometimes its very existence seems to be barely acknowledged. In a justly celebrated book on the Lesbian poets we read that it is a natural assumption that all or almost all Sappho’s poems ‘were recited by herself informally to her companions’. The isles of Greece, the isles of Greece, where burning Sappho loved and recited? In that generally admirable volume The Oxford History of the Classical World (1986) we look in vain for a section on Greek music.

Abstract Hungary and Poland were formerly ruled by Communist governments imposed by the Soviet Union. Both had long histories of their own culture, based upon ethnic heritage and religion. Once Communism was overthrown, both had brief periods of liberal democracy. The countries did not have a long history of democratic values and viewed immigrants as threats to their lineage. The ruling parties now favor exclusivist national identities but generous support for people of their own blood lines. They worry that people who are not of their ethnicity or religion threaten their historic cultures and have taken actions to restrict the rights of Muslims, Jews, and gays and lesbians.

Streszczenie:
The Gay and Lesbian Archive of Mid-America (GLAMA) was founded in 2009 to collect, preserve, and make accessible the documents and artifacts that reflect the histories of the LGBTQ communities in the Kansas City region. Originally a partnership between the University of Missouri – Kansas City Special Collections and Archives Division, the Kansas City Museum, and the Jackson County Historical Society, by 2014 two of the partners retreated from the project and it has been solely an initiative at UMKC since. GLAMA has been wildly successful in many respects – response from community donors; interest on the part of student, faculty, and community researchers; and uncovering a previously hidden history of the region. This presentation will focus on the evolution of GLAMA, resources available to users, and public-facing projects that have emerged from the collections.
