Streszczenie:
The Neoproterozoic to Late Paleozoic-aged Amadeus Basin is a large (~170 000 km2) east–west-trending basin, bounded to the south by the Musgrave Province and to the north by the Arunta Block of the Northern Territory. Commercial oil and gas production is established in the northern part of the basin but the southern part is still a frontier exploration area. Vintage and new seismic reflection data have been used with well data along the south-eastern Amadeus Basin to construct a new structural and depositional model. Three major phases of deformation controlling deposition have been identified. The first phase is characterised by a SW–NE trending structural fabric and is thought to be older than the deposition of the first sediments identified above basement (Heavitree and Bitter Springs formations). The second phase corresponds to the Petermann Orogeny (580–540 Ma) and trends in a NW–SE orientation. The third phase is the Alice Springs Orogeny (450–300 Ma) and is oriented W–E to WNW–ESE in this part of the basin. This tectono-stratigraphic model involving three distinct phases of deformation potentially explains several critical observations: the lack of Heavitree reservoir at Mt Kitty-1, limited salt movements before the Petermann Orogeny (~300 Ma after its deposition) and salt-involved structures that can be either capped by the Petermann Unconformity and overlying Cambrian to Devonian sediments, or can reach the present day surface. Finally, this model, along with availability of good quality seismic data, opens new perspectives for the hydrocarbon exploration of the Amadeus Basin. Each of the tectonic phases impacts the primary petroleum system and underpins play-based exploration.

Streszczenie:
Abstract. Thrust fault systems typically distribute shear strain preferentially into the hanging wall rather than the footwall. The Woodroffe Thrust in the Musgrave Block of central Australia is a regional-scale example that does not fit this model. It developed due to intracontinental shortening during the Petermann Orogeny (ca. 560–520 Ma) and is interpreted to be at least 600 km long in its E–W strike direction, with an approximate top-to-north minimum displacement of 60–100 km. The associated mylonite zone is most broadly developed in the footwall. The immediate hanging wall was only marginally involved in the mylonitization process, as can be demonstrated from the contrasting thorium signatures of mylonites derived from the upper amphibolite facies footwall and the granulite facies hanging wall protoliths. Thermal weakening cannot account for such an inverse deformation gradient, as syn-deformational P–T estimates for the Petermann Orogeny in the hanging wall and footwall from the same locality are very similar. The distribution of pseudotachylytes, which acted as preferred nucleation sites for shear deformation, also cannot provide an explanation, since these fault rocks are especially prevalent in the immediate hanging wall. The most likely reason for the inverted deformation gradient across the Woodroffe Thrust is water-assisted weakening due to the increased, but still limited, presence of aqueous fluids in the footwall. We also establish a qualitative increase in the abundance of fluids in the footwall along an approx. 60 km long section in the direction of thrusting, together with a slight decrease in the temperature of mylonitization (ca. 100 °C). These changes in ambient conditions are accompanied by a 6-fold decrease in thickness (from ca. 600 to 100 m) of the Woodroffe Thrust mylonitic zone.

Streszczenie:
Abstract. Geophysical evidence for lower continental crustal earthquakes in almost all collisional orogens is in conflict with the widely accepted notion that rocks, under high grade conditions, should flow rather than fracture. Pseudotachylytes are remnants of frictional melts generated during seismic slip and can therefore be used as an indicator of former seismogenic fault zones. The Fregon Subdomain in Central Australia was deformed under dry sub-eclogitic conditions of 600–700 °C and 1.0–1.2 GPa during the intracontinental Petermann Orogeny (ca. 550 Ma) and contains abundant pseudotachylyte. These pseudotachylytes are commonly foliated, recrystallized, and cross-cut by other pseudotachylytes, reflecting repeated generation during ongoing ductile deformation. This interplay is interpreted as evidence for repeated seismic brittle failure and post- to inter-seismic creep under dry lower-crustal conditions. Thermodynamic modelling of the pseudotachylyte bulk composition gives the same PT conditions of shearing as in surrounding mylonites. We conclude that pseudotachylytes in the Fregon Subdomain are a direct analogue of current seismicity in dry lower continental crust.

Ca+-calmodulin (Ca2+-CaM)-dependent protein kinase II (Ca2+/CaMKII) is an important regulator of cardiac ion channels, and its inhibition may be an approach for treatment of ventricular arrhythmias. Using the two-electrode voltage-clamp technique, we investigated the role of W-7, an inhibitor of Ca2+-occupied CaM, and KN-93, an inhibitor of Ca2+/CaMKII, on the Kv4.3 channel in Xenopus laevis oocytes. W-7 caused a voltage- and concentration-dependent decrease in peak current, with IC50 of 92.4 μM. The block was voltage dependent, with an effective electrical distance of 0.18 ± 0.05, and use dependence was observed, suggesting that a component of W-7 inhibition of Kv4.3 current was due to open-channel block. W-7 made recovery from open-state inactivation a biexponential process, also suggesting open-channel block. We compared the effects of W-7 with those of KN-93 after washout of 500 μM BAPTA-AM. KN-93 reduced peak current without evidence of voltage or use dependence. Both W-7 and KN-93 accelerated all components of inactivation. We used wild-type and mutated Kv4.3 channels with mutant CaMKII consensus phosphorylation sites to examine the effects of W-7 and KN-93. In contrast to W-7, KN-93 at 35 μM selectively accelerated open-state inactivation in the wild-type vs. the mutant channel. W-7 had a significantly greater effect on recovery from inactivation in wild-type than in mutant channels. We conclude that, at certain concentrations, KN-93 selectively inhibits Ca2+/CaMKII activity in Xenopus oocytes and that the effects of W-7 are mediated by direct interaction with the channel pore and inhibition of Ca2+-CaM, as well as a change in activity of Ca2+-CaM-dependent enzymes, including Ca2+/CaMKII.

AbstractAn incomplete pairwise balanced design is equivalent to a pairwise balanced design with a distinguished block, viewed as a ‘hole’. If there are v points, a hole of size w, and all (other) block sizes equal k, this is denoted IPBD((v;w), k). In addition to congruence restrictions on v and w, there is also a necessary inequality: v > (k − 1)w. This article establishes two main existence results for IPBD((v;w), k): one in which w is fixed and v is large, and the other in the case v > (k −1+∊)w when w is large (depending on ∊). Several possible generalizations of the problemare also discussed.

AbstractA minimal (1,3; ν) covering occurs when we have a family of proper subsets selected from ν elements with the property that every triple occurs exactly once in the family and no family of smaller cardinality possesses this property. Woodall developed a lower bound W for the quantity g(k)(1, 3; ν) which represents the cardinality of a minimal family with longest block of length k. The Woodall bound is only accurate in the region when k ≥ ν/2. We develop an expression for the excess of the true value over the Woodall bound and apply this to show that, when k ≥ ν/2, the value of g(1,3; ν) = W + 1 when k is even and W + 1 + when k is odd.

Streszczenie:
The oldest Polish bookplate known today and imprinted directly from a woodcut block on book pages is one attributed to Wojciech Strzałkowski, a notary from Gniezno (dated to 1519–1520). It can be found in an incunabulum from the collection of the Cathedral Library in the Archdiocesan Archives in Gniezno (Formularium instrumentorum ad usum Curiae Romanae [Hagenau: Heinrich Gran, before 17 August 1492], in 4o, no. Inc. 37). In the article the author demonstrates that the sign in fact belonged to Jan Żdżarowski (–1551), a public notary as well as canon of Poznań, Włocławek and Kraków. In his notarial admission (of 26 January 1519) Żdżarowski used a woodcut block to make his notarial sign (at that time notaries usually drew their signs). He used the same block to make a bookplate. An analysis of the state of preservation of both prints demonstrates that the block used to make them originated around 1517–1518, certainly before 26 January 1519, perhaps in Kraków. This is the oldest known case of a block being used to make a notarial sign by a notary from Poland and, at the same time, the first case of the same tool being used also to make a bookplate. The annex features an edition of the text of Jan Żdżarowski’s admission.

The important features of our approach are that (i) the interdomains of PBs in the preformed solid thin films are chemically OH-functionalized in situ, and (ii) the barium titanate precursors are solely localized within and reacted to the interdomains of PBs in solid thin films by condensation.Thin films were prepared by spin casting a 1% w/w Kraton D1102®/toluene solution on a coverglass. Thin films were transferred to gold TEM specimen grids by the water lift off method.

Streszczenie:
This work numerically investigated the steady state fluid flow and heat transfer behaviors associated with a sintered porous channel that contains periodically spaced heated blocks. Some typical cases are experimentally examined in this study. The relevant varied parameters were the average bead diameter (d), the relative block height (h∕H), the relative block width (w∕H), the relative block spacing (s∕H), and the Reynolds number (Re). The numerical results revealed a lack of global recirculation in regions between the blocks, where the forced convective heat transfer was low, but the heat in those regions was transferred to the metallic block by conduction through porous media, before being dissipated into the fluid that passed over the zone above the heated block. Additionally, the relevant parameters considerably affect the local Nusselt number distribution along the periphery of the block surface. The average Nusselt number for each block decreased along the direction of the flow until it reached its fully developed value. The Nusselt number increased with h∕H or Re in the fully developed region. The effect of h∕H on the fully developed Nusselt number became stronger as Re increased and w∕H decreased. The effects of s∕H and d on the fully developed Nusselt number were insignificant over the ranges of parameters considered herein (d=0.7 and 1.16mm, h∕H=0.12-0.59, w∕H=0.24-0.47, s∕H=0.24-0.7, and Re=1019-5059). Finally, this study summarized the average Nusselt number for different configurations of the heated blocks with various d, h∕H, w∕H, s∕H, and Re.

Unlike the wreath product, the block product is not associative at the level of varieties. All decomposition theorems involving block products, such as the bilateral version of Krohn–Rhodes' theorem, have always assumed a right-to-left bracketing of the operands. We consider here the left-to-right bracketing, which is generally weaker. More precisely, we are interested in characterizing for any pseudovarieties of monoids U, V the smallest pseudovariety W that contains U and such that W □ V = W. This allows us to obtain new decomposition results for a number of important varieties such as DA, DO and DA * G. We apply these results to characterize the regular languages definable with generalized first-order sentences using only two variables and to shed new light on recent results on regular languages recognized by bounded-depth circuits with a linear number of wires and regular languages with small communication complexity.

Streszczenie:
Field-theoretic simulations (FTS) provide an efficient technique for investigating fluctuation effects in block copolymer melts with numerous advantages over traditional particle-based simulations. For systems involving two components (i.e., A and B), the field-based Hamiltonian, Hf[W−,W+], depends on a composition field, W−(r), that controls the segregation of the unlike components and a pressure field, W+(r), that enforces incompressibility. This review introduces researchers to a promising variant of FTS, in which W−(r) fluctuates while W+(r) tracks its mean-field value. The method is described in detail for melts of AB diblock copolymer, covering its theoretical foundation through to its numerical implementation. We then illustrate its application for neat AB diblock copolymer melts, as well as ternary blends of AB diblock copolymer with its A- and B-type parent homopolymers. The review concludes by discussing the future outlook. To help researchers adopt the method, open-source code is provided that can be run on either central processing units (CPUs) or graphics processing units (GPUs).

The article analyzes Chamowo, a journal by Miron Białoszewski, in which the writer recounts his experience of the block housing estate in Lizbonska street in Warsaw. The leitmotive in the text is the function of the gaze as Białoszewski devotes special attention to the action of looking through the window of his new flat. By concentrating on this apparently prosaic activity, the author of the article reflects upon the ways in which a city can be perceived and lived in. She also analyses the ways of narrating the urban space and representing the everyday of block housing estates, to include finally the rhythmanalysis of the urban space.

Streszczenie:
To reduce energy consumption and protect the environment, a type of hollow shale block with 29 rows of holes was designed and produced. This paper investigated the thermal properties of hollow shale blocks and walls. First, the guarding heat-box method was used to obtain the heat transfer coefficient of the hollow shale block walls. The experimental heat transfer coefficient is 0.726 W/m2·K, which would save energy compared to traditional wall materials. Then, the theoretical value of the heat transfer coefficient was calculated to be 0.546 W/m2·K. Furthermore, the one-dimensional steady heat conduction process for the block and walls was simulated using the finite element analysis software ANSYS. The predicted heat transfer coefficient for the walls was 0.671 W/m2·K, which was in good agreement with the test results. With the outstanding self-insulation properties, this type of hollow shale block could be used as a wall material without any additional insulation measures in masonry structures.

On 26 July 1647 Westminster, in the grip of plague and political crisis, exploded with rioting. With the connivance of leading Presbyterian politicians in parliament and the City, a throng of apprentices and demobilized soldiers besieged the two Houses, coercing the imprisoned members to accede to their demands. Many of the rioters had subscribed to an outlawed ‘Solemn Engagement’, calling for the restoration of the king: they demanded the reversal of parliament's declaration against this Engagement, and the return of the City's militia forces to its own strongly ‘Presbyterian’ Militia Committee. As the main body of rioters swarmed into the Court of Requests, through the Painted Chamber and assailed the doors of the house of lords, another smaller party led by one Brace, a grocer, ran down the Water Lane leading from the house to the river, to block this means of escape. Reminded by one of the rioters that ‘not at anie hand [was] this house to be forced’ Brace retorted ‘what they did, they were aduised by a Member of the house of Comons’.6 ‘Keepe them in, keepe them in thises three daies’, shouted their ringleader, the reformado captain, William Musgrave, ‘and if they will not grant your desires, cutt their throates’ ‘Through the barred doors of the Lords’ chamber came cries of ‘Traytors, put them out, hang their guts about their necks and many other like words’.

Streszczenie:
The electrical conductivity distribution within wide palaeochannels is usually well-mapped from airborne electromagnetic data using stitched 1D algorithms. Such stitched 1D solutions are, however, inappropriate for narrow valleys. An alternative option is to consider 2D or 3D models to allow for finite lateral extent of conductors. In airborne electromagnetic data within the Musgrave block near the well-studied Valen conductor, strong induced polarization (IP) and superparamagnetic (SPM) effects make physical property and structure estimation even more uncertain for deep channel clays, particularly those whose channel widths are comparable to their depth of burial. We developed a recursive data fitting algorithm based on dispersive thin sheet responses. The separate IP and SPM components of the fit provide near-surface chargeability and SPM distributions, and the associated electromagnetic (EM) fit provides stripped data with monotonic decays compatible with a simple nondispersive conductivity model. The validity of this stripped data prediction was tested through a comparison of 1D conductivity-depth imaging and 3D inversion applied to the original data and the stripped data. Due to the forked geometry of the deep conductivity structure in the region we investigated, we successfully used 3D rather than 2D inversion to predict the conductivity distribution related to the EM data. We recovered from the stripped data a continuous conductivity structure consistent with a branching, clay-filled palaeovalley under cover.

AbstractBroadband teleseismic waveform data from 13 earthquakes recorded by 70 digital seismic stations were selected to evaluate the inhomogeneity parameters of the crustal medium in the southern Longmenshan fault zone and its adjacent regions using the teleseismic fluctuation wavefield method. Results show that a strong inhomogeneity exists beneath the study region, which can be divided into three blocks according to its structure and tectonic deformation features. These are known as the Sichuan-Qinghai Block, the Sichuan-Yunnan Block, and the Mid-Sichuan Block. The velocity fluctuation ratios of the three blocks are approximately 5.1%, 3.6%, and 5.1% in the upper crust and 5.1%, 3.8%, and 4.9% in the lower crust. The inhomogeneity correlation lengths of the three blocks are about 10.1 km, 14.0 km, and 10.7 km in the upper crust and 11.8 km, 17.0 km, and 11.8 km in the lower crust. The differences in the crustal medium inhomogeneity beneath the Sichuan-Yunnan Block, the Sichuan-Qinghai Block, and the Mid-Sichuan Block may be related to intensive tectonic movement and material flow in the crust and upper mantle.
