Streszczenie:
There were three stages in the process of narrowing and focussing the project. Initially the aim was nothing less than a 'paradigm shift' - to reframe the Praxis of Science as 'Design' using the museum as a microcosmic context in which the complexity of the condition of modernity/postmodernity was amply reflected. This over-ambitious scheme narrowed at first to one of exploring the interdisciplinary problem of the multidimensionality of design. In this, incommensurability and theories of space have to be accommodated in a workable model, and the forms and transformations of the model have then to be 'proved' in a praxiological exposition. Finally, it has become clear that much of the detailed creative work implied in the previous formulation of the project is, to be realistic, of a postdoctoral nature. Therefore, the Ph.D. problem has been focussed even further. The focus is on the development of a multidimensional expression of museum design in the form of a theoretical model and an appraisal of its implications for general theory in organization and design. This involves (1) Background theory - a survey of concepts and theories in modelling, (2) Focal theory - a critique of existing notions of organization and Praxis in museums and in Design, (3) Model theory - the development and presentation of a more adequate scheme, and (4) Contribution - the evaluation of its potential as a generalization. Background Theory: In the first part of the programme it has been necessary to ask a specific question about Philosophy - does any specific paradigm offer an adequate conceptual scheme and 'language' in which to work? And if not, what do so-called post-Philosophical approaches - radical pragmatism, ironism - have to offer in terms of a workable strategy, perhaps one that is recognizably 'designerly' in approach. In addition the definition and clarification of a wide range of incommensurable notions of 'space' has had to be undertaken to be clear that the complexity with which design, in the generic sense, engages has a particular character which is quite distinct from that of disciplines such as Science, History, and Politics which are traditionally inclined towards epochal paradigmatic solidarity and towards contingent epistemological coherence. The designer is, arguably, more of a chameleon than is the scientist or the historian or the politician, more so even than are the novelist and the ethnographer whom Rorty cites as latterly more crucial figures. This 'quixotic' aspect of the designer's position is crucial to any argument about personal integrity and social value: this enigmatic journeyman and traveller follows a lonely path guided by emotional (instinctual) as much as by intellectual and practical imperatives. Focal Theory: The second part of the programme has involved two operations: (1) a critical investigation, in some detail, of the discourses of organization, design and museography/museology; and (2) an opening up of the intervals between them, that is, an exploration their three interfaces - organization-design; design-museum; and museum-organization. Model Theory: By proposing a visible constellation of spatial concepts and exposing the tensions which characterize their performativity, the second part of the programme is drawn towards the final part of the programme. In this the adequacy of the proposed model is evaluated in terms of the specific context of the museum as an organizational type - a creative-administrative nexus - and in terms of its potential value as a generalization. This latter point has involved consideration of the possible 'museal' quality of organization in general and a reappraisal of the values of design above and beyond the institutionalized, professionally delineated and administered discipline of Design practice. Contribution: The conclusions emphasize the difficulty of boundary crossing enterprizes such as this project. A considerable effort has gone into deferring the synthetic instinct that all theory tends, sooner or later, to exemplify. However, not just for the sake of form, I make clear some specific and critical points in relation to the 'new' space established by this investigation of museum-design-organization. The museum design discipline has good reason to expound a communication-led collaborative philosophy and to have the strength to develop its discourse in more sophisticated intellectual circles. In general there is a central message that emerges from the museum-design-organization complex which in one sense bolsters the ironist/new pragmatist stance in engaged theory but also reminds us that to be engaged one must develop skills and capacities that are independent of the logics of language, that are irrational and yet invaluable. And in future the interdisciplinary (as distinct from the multidisciplinary) platform must speak its name and be generous. If one is met with incomprehension, resistance, threat response, or out and out hostility one has failed to understand the nature of design. One does not wait to be invited in, neither does one go straight for the jugular. One makes a home, a communal place, a common ground. One finds the hearth and kindles in it a new flame, a new light. One arranges a meeting of minds prepared to enchant with and to be enchanted by new visions and new stories. And one helps each soul along its journey with no more than a gentle nudge in a promising direction in the certain knowledge that the whole process will need to be repeated tomorrow and that this will remain the case for each tomorrow.

Streszczenie:
Little is known about the impact of undertaking social justice work on museums and their staff. The consideration of staff is central to my research, as current scholarship positions social justice in museums as an outward-facing concern, something to be done with communities ‘out there’ rather than ‘in here’. Museums are social places and catalysts for interaction with other humans across time and space and culture. The research therefore critiques the ethics of, and the value we place on, relationships with ourselves as well as our communities, and whether we recognise staff as a community. If not, this thesis argues that we diminish trust in the museum. Using the frame of critical community practice, the thesis explores how social justice values intersect between organisational and staff group constructs, and the individuals that comprise them, and their connection to trust as a critically conscious practice. The thesis encompasses many elements of key change management theories, and attributes of the learning organisation, within a social justice frame. In the museum specific context of this research, citizens and communities are conceived as employees and organisations. Is trust actively and consciously considered as a workplace practice, and do we fully understand the role trust has in organisational learning to support social change? The research examines the lived experiences of practitioners in two organisations: St Fagans at National Museums Wales and the Social Enterprise Academy, Scotland. The qualitative research is supported by a background survey identifying differences in how values are perceived across organisations. The research contributes an understanding of the collective actions that foreground people, human qualities and behaviours across internal and external relationships. Its findings endorse the concept of systems thinking, enabling museums to actively work with staff as a community and so build trust in the museum.

This essay researches institutional diversity in the unlikely combination of institution and feminist organization, Museum Anna Nordlander (MAN), a contemporary art museum with a gender and identity focus in Skellefteå, Sweden. Using mostly theories presented in Sara Ahmed’s work, On Being Included: Racism and Diversity in Institutional Life from 2012, this essay examines the museum’s preconditions for successful diversity work, how diversity is understood and made, and, finally, how diversity is expressed in its exhibitions. The essay finds that the museum’s biggest challenges to successful diversity work lie in the insufficient diversity displayed in its exhibitions and the homogenous internal representation, and that the key might lie in the selection process.

Knowledge of past civilizations is an element of improvement for Humanity. Despite this fact making of museums a requirement for our societies, they suffer from budgetary constraints mainly due to restrictions of state subsidization. Our question was to understand how national museums reconcile their institutional objectives with management objectives imposed by the French LOLF.The purpose of this thesis is to defend the development of a new form in the field of organizational theory. The museums we observed have not made the choice to remain only an institution or to desinstitutionalize themselves into an organization. They managed the difficult balance between traditional museum objectives and management objectives and they each found a unique solution to deploy a stable and balanced hybrid structure. This research was done by highlighting four generic approaches from the literature and the study of two establishments. To do this, and despite the closure of the field, we studied the activity reports of eleven years and conducted nine interviews

Streszczenie:
Community engagement (CE) is a key focus of UK museum policy and practice, increasingly used as a strategy to democratise museums and position them as social agents. However, the practices of CE have not evolved far beyond what I call the ‘contributory museum’, which focuses on how communities can benefit the museum. In this thesis I propose the distributed museum as an alternative contribution to museological theory and practice, and call for a conceptual and practical reconfiguration that focuses on how museums can benefit communities. This concept arises from a deep investigation of the politics of CE practice at Tyne and Wear Archives and Museums. The research takes a unique organisational perspective, focusing on museum professionals’ perspectives to examine how CE is constructed and managed across the museum’s different departments, and highlighting varying practices, competing meanings and discourses, and the operational and cultural barriers to this work. Using a novel collaborative-ethnographic methodology, the research examines how the museum’s Outreach Team negotiates institutional barriers, and how their practices have evolved towards more collaborative ways of working with community organisations and localities. Arising from this close examination of practice, the thesis finds evidence for the distributed museum in some elements of current Outreach practice, but it is yet to be realised across the whole museum institution. It suggests that two distinctive practices make the distributed museum: care and craft. These practices are analysed drawing on the geographies of care literatures, and actor-network and assemblages theories. Critically, this thesis presents a politics of practice that works from within the logics of the museum and therefore attends to the competing demands that are currently placed on museums. I argue that if CE is reconfigured in these ways – as a practice of care and as craft – then community engagement will enable a new basis for collaborative practice with communities. The thesis ends with implications for museum policy and practice, and further research.

This thesis examines how techniques from place marketing, developed to market places, can be used in the process of designing a visual identity for an institution. The thesis is a case study of the development of a new visual identity for the public art institution Malmö konsthall. The essay presents Malmö Konsthall, defines the term visual identity and describes the main principles in place branding. I then define target audiences and key values, discuss the application of place marketing principle and go through the design process of the new visual identity. The process showed that theories about flagship buildings, signature design and signature districts have the biggest influence on the design. The conclusion is that theories from place marketing can be valuable tools for graphic designers, and would benefit from being explored further. Several strategies in place marketing function, mainly those relating to environment and architecture, can be of direct benefit to the designer.

Streszczenie:
In this time of rapid political, economic, social and technological change, museums of all kinds face continuous pressures and demands from a variety of stakeholders. These demands are frequently competing (or at least in tension), arising from the different agendas, interests and requirements of diverse stakeholders which, in turn, raise questions around the purposes and priorities of museums. Although many literatures have contributed to the discussion around the museum’s purpose, there remains a lack of in-depth, grounded analysis that explores museums’ structures, processes, and practices and the role of individuals and broader forces for change in the making and reshaping of the organisation. In short, there has been relatively little scholarly attention given to the study of the museum as an ever-changing, dynamic and complex organisation. Drawing on organisational change studies, management theories and museum studies, this thesis seeks to understand the processes that contribute to the reshaping of the museum’s purpose, priorities and practices by staff and other agents through a qualitative investigation of change within a single institution. The aims of the research are to better understand the role of leadership in the process of change and the dynamic attitudes, values and power relations that underpin such processes. In order to explore the hidden complexities of the internal workings in the museum, this paper employs a single case study - the National Museum of Natural Science (NMNS) in Taiwan – that was investigated through an organisational ethnography approach. This thesis focuses on two main forces for change. One is the increasing influence of market forces that encourage the museum to move towards more business-like practices. The other is a growing appreciation of the social responsibility of the museum. These two predominantly external forces play out in a different ways and, at the same time, emerge as significant factors which influence the museum’s move away from traditional functions and conventional works and practices. By revealing various values, interests and power dynamics intersecting at the organisational and personal levels, the thesis aims to contribute an enhanced understanding of how and why change occurs in museums and how potentially competing interests can be negotiated.

Museums evolve in a complex environment, the result of successive waves of change since the 1980s. These changes reveal a multi-speed museum ecosystem that reveals certain inequalities, particularly in digital content. Ambitious digital strategies are being implemented by museums and many digital devices have been set up. However, professionals and researchers report difficulties encountered when conducting digital projects. The objective of this research is to understand and characterise the complexity of the collaboration between the actors of the museum sector and the providers of digital solutions; and to explore the techniques and tools put in place by the professionals involved to facilitate the implementation of these digital projects. We propose to answer the following question: "In what way does the boundary objects allow to reconcile the antecedents of institutional complexity in digital cultural mediation projects? We adopt a mode of reasoning based on pragmatist enquiry. The methodological design is articulated around three studies aiming at identifying the institutional logics specific to society museums, questioning the perceptions and social representations of the professionals involved in these projects and analysing in depth the digital project set up by two society museums

Hendrick, Catharina Carmel. "The Agile Museum : organisational change through collecting 'new media art'". Thesis, University of Leicester, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/36093.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
This thesis investigates how collecting new media art affects the museum institutionally. The aim and purpose of this research was to understand how the process of collecting new media art within two regional case study museums (one in the UK and one in the Netherlands) is changing how they operate and function. The two regional museums in this research, I suggest, are innovative and adaptable organisations with agile organisation, agile curation and an agile organisational culture and leadership. Best practice is fostered, experimentation is cultivated and staff work in a collaborative and flexible manner so that new media art can be acquired. The theoretical approach, the Congruence Model of Organizational Behavior, considers how organisations are best aligned in terms of four major components: people, formal structure, informal culture and critical tasks/workflow. The research evaluated the congruence between the four major components and signals the subtle, but important ways in which new media art has reshaped them. A case study qualitative approach was used; interviews were carried out with participants and thematic analysis was employed to analyse the data. Three broad themes emerged from the research. First, new ways of organising – agile teams with a project-based ethos were apparent. Second, collaboration inside and outside the organisation – working across units and disciplines inside the museum and building networks outside the museum which promotes knowledge exchange, learning and collaborative practice were evident. Finally, staff agency and leadership – the organisational culture facilitates autonomy for staff where informed risk-taking and proactivity flourish. This research extends our knowledge of the reciprocal relationship between new media art and how the two museums operate and function. This study has gone some way towards enhancing our understanding of how new media art impacts, in nuanced ways, the museum’s structure and culture, and skills and expertise.

Streszczenie:
Muslim communities are among the least well understood in Australia. This thesis examines the emerging phenomenon of Muslim civil society organisations (MCSOs). In contrast to much publicised jihadist and radical groups, MCSOs are far more representative of Muslim communities and integral to the long-term position of Islam in Australia. Using descriptive phenomenology, this study presents the experiences of Australian Muslim civil society actors and the organisations they represent. Through 30 unstructured, in-depth interviews with 15 Australian MCSOs actors, their stories are told for the first time based on their lived experience and in their own words. In particular, this thesis explores how MCSOs have responded to the challenges of the Australian socio-political context, the perceived impact of these experiences, and how Islam is manifested within the contexts of these experiences. The key themes which emerged from these interviews include: community building, social inclusion, the impact of 9/11 and the negotiation of identity. Importantly, based on these four major themes, the phenomenological analysis delineated that the universal essence of Australian MCSOs clearly revealed that Islam does not exist in Australia in isolation from the wider socio-political context. There is a constant, albeit under-recognised, process of negotiated exchange with Australian cultural norms, values, systems and institutions. Moreover, the findings also demonstrated that external events have brought Australian MCSOs full circle in their community building.

Streszczenie:
In this thesis I first consider some ways in which the developing economy in the Nineteenth Century affected both local and national government, including policing, the Civil Service, incorporation and education. Charity, class and the ways in which economic developments led to changes in forms of leisure are discussed. This is the main concern of the second chapter which includes Ihe emergence of large commercial outlets like music halls. I investigate whether there was acoherent mode of thought underlying these changes and whether this extended into other areas, and if so, which. Different views of progress first encountered in various histories of Nineteenth Century England are then considered. These were related to ideas about progress and civilisation'. In Chapter Three these last two themes are explored and related to Elias' ideas on the Civilising Process, class and other divisions in society. In Chapter Four, these ideas are used to illustrate the history of the Great Exhibition, its organisation and the lives of some of those directly, and in the case of Pitt Rivers, indirectly, involved in it. This chapter is included because it provides an opportunity for ideas about civilisation and progress to become a formal reality. In the last chapter, the creation of some public museums is traced, especially in London, for example, the British Museum and the National Gallery. Their consequent organisation and the arrangement of exhibits are related to attempts to legislate for the creation of public museums throughout the country. It is hoped that the idea of the expert and other issues included such as the arts and manufactures debate, show how notions of civilisation and progress are entrenched in ideas linked to the economy.

This study highlights the difficulty for non-profit cultural organisations to measure and evaluate the performance of their operations. The goal was to suggest and test a model for performance evaluation that can be used by museums, more specifically it was developed for Swedish Museums. The theoretical framing of the study is Operations Management. With this being a practical and problem-solving research discipline, the pragmatic approach with Design Science research was chosen as the methodological foundation. Based on this strategy several research methods were used in the process of solving the problem and designing the model. Based on previous models for performance evaluation, with the adaptation to the setting of Swedish Museums a model was presented, tested and evaluated in the study. The study was delimited to the design phase and implementation was not part of the report. After having tested the model, a follow-up interview was conducted. In the interview, the test results were presented to a museum manager in order to validate that the model can be used as a tool for decision support and as a way to report non-financial results to stakeholders such as politicians or their representatives.

Successive British and French governments have encouraged the formation of bodies claiming to speak for Muslims since the early 1990s. However, nearly two decades after the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) was created in 1997, the issue of Muslim representation is still pending. In France, the trajectory of the government-backed the Conseil français du culte musulman (CFCM) created in 2003 is parallel in some respects: weakened by the members’ infighting, it finally failed to achieve organisational unity. In my dissertation, I draw parallels between the two cases and consider the reasons which led to the decline of these national ‘representative’ bodies. Using government reports, official statements, press articles and personal accounts of the individuals involved in their inception, I argue that they played a significant role in the early stages of Muslim mobilisation. However, once their legitimacy and ability to cater for Muslim communities in the new post-9/11 context was called into question, the national councils gave way to new types of Muslim political mobilisation. As a result, a multitude of “progressive” Muslim organisations focusing on social cohesion, interfaith outreach, civic participation and social welfare emerged. By shifting their objectives from accommodating the needs of the Muslim communities to social cohesion as a whole, these new local actors not only help build new Muslim identities but also strive to transform the image of Muslims from an inward-looking community to outward-looking dynamic citizens

Masters in Public Administration - MPA
In January 1997, Robben Island Museum (RIM) opened its doors to the public as a tourist destination. This was done without any formal management structure or strategic planning, to cope not only with its mandate as the first National Museum of the new democratic South Africa, but also to meet the demand of the great interest of visitors to see this prison where the icon of the liberation struggle, Nelson Mandela was incarcerated for 27 years. This operational take-off without formal administrative management structure and strategic planning was understandable given the social and political transitional climate in the country. The effect thereof as the old adage states ‘failure to plan is planning for failure’ seems to hold true for RIM who is struggling to become a well-managed national heritage site. RIM over the years have been beset with governance and management challenges and enjoyed continual bad publicity. The study’s aim was to bring an understanding of what the major governance and managerial challenges were and to make recommendations to address those. The study was guided by a central research question namely What were the administrative and management challenges of RIM and in what ways did it impact on the operational effectiveness of RIM as a national museum and World heritage site. A number of findings emanated from the study. A key one was that clarity of roles and responsibilities of the council and the management is required. Furthermore, the vision and mission of RIM must inform the formulation of strategies to give effect thereto. This in turn must be the base for the development of an appropriate organisational structure to implement the strategies. A number of recommendation stems from the research. An important one was that appointment must be on the basis of ‘fit for purpose’. This means that staff with the right skills and capacity should be appointed as a matter of priority. In conclusion, the findings of the study could be used by other heritage organisations faced with similar organisational challenges.

Streszczenie:
A large number of not for profit organisations use Web technologies for community building, to improve services offered to their public or to generate income. However, the Internet is not a universal panacea and between the hype and counter-hype on the benefits of Web technologies, it is clear there are limits. Some third sector organisations are failing to make the most ofWeb technologies. Thus, it is important to develop a clear understanding of the process of deriving value from those technologies within a not-forprofit environment. This thesis aims at' understanding the way organisational value can be derived from investments in Web technologies within the museum context. Two in-depth case studies of Web projects' implementation processes and their financial, as well as non financial outcomes within two UK museums are presented. The data presented in this thesis was collected through a variety of methods including semi-structured interviews, observation, document review and an evaluation of the two websites. A theoretical approach that takes into account orga~isational and cultural issues embedded in Web-based systems was used in order to uhderstand better the process of acquiring value from the Web activities of the two museums. Thus, a synthesised conceptual framework based on the 'Mangle of Practice' and the 'Limits to Value' model was used for data collection. While the theoretical framework equipped the researcher with a sound basis upon which data collection was conducted, the framework did not offer much assistance in the task of data analysis. For this purpose, techniques were adapted from grounded theory. The two case studies show that although limited resources and the challenges of dealing with the digital content are very important issues for museums, Web systems planning aligned to the museum strategy and assigning the responsibility for the monitoring of Web related initiatives to a senior manager with a broad view of the organisation, as well as the power to initiate changes can improve the value obtained from those initiatives.

Streszczenie:
This thesis presents an exploratory analysis into the communicated and lived accountability practices of Muslim charity organisations in the UK, utilising Suchman’s perspective on legitimacy and the Islamic theoretical framework. Communicated accountability was explored by examining the extent to which Muslim charity organisation’s [MCO’s] trustee annual reports [TARs] comply with the narrative elements of the Charities Statement of Recommended Practice (SORP) 2005 through a comparative analysis with the TARs of Christian charity organisations [CCO]. 123 CCO TARs and 238 MCO TARs were analysed. This part of the research sought to understand how MCOs managed their pragmatic legitimacy. Findings from this stage of the study suggest CCOs and larger charities of both groups of RCOs provide more disclosure and better quality TARS, RCOs do not disclose the whole range of accountability as required by the SORP framework, none of the MCOs provided any disclosure in relation to how their zakah or waqf funds have been distributed and there was evidence of complacency by external examiners and account preparers. Lived accountability was explored using a qualitative approach. Interviews with 18 trustees, senior executive, management and charity personnel of the eight largest MCOs in the UK were undertaken. This stage of the research sought to understand how MCOs enacted accountability to achieve moral and cognitive legitimacy. It was found that functional accountability of MCOs and the subsequent moral legitimacy was linked to two core areas of accounting and auditing, and governance and oversight. A number of aspects were identified which either drove or impeded accountability in MCOs. Islamic religious values were found to be important aspects helping MCO members navigate cognitive legitimacy. This study provides a unique lens through which the theoretical analysis of accountability within religious organisations and charity organisations can be extended.

South African debates on food security address a wide range of issues related to the production, the distribution and the consumption of food in the context of deep concerns over the impact of poverty, unemployment and inequality. One aspect of such debates is on the need for nutritious food amidst hunger, malnutrition, obesity and the prevalence of diabetes. This study will investigate the Islamic theological injunctions and guidelines that govern the production, the different facets of distribution and the consumption of food in Muslim communities. There are numerous theological injunctions from the Quran and prophetic traditions (?ad?th) guiding the Muslim community in relation to food security. These include injunctions around the need to provide nutritious food. The study will assess the programmes of five Muslim faith-based organisations in the Cape Town Metropolitan Area, working in the field of food security and more specifically, feeding schemes. The food programmes of these organisations will be described, analysed and assessed in order to establish whether, and to what extent, the Islamic injunctions on nutrition are implemented, given various constraints. This will require attention to the policies, the strategies and the practices associated with such feeding schemes.

Thesis (MTech (Business Administration))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2008
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the organisational communication and infonnation flow at the SA Cultural History Museum (SACHM) and its decentralised sites with particular reference to its role in decision making and, where necessary, to recommend remedial measures. An extensive literature review was undertaken on organisational communication, infornation and decision making in organisations, with particular reference to the SACHM. The literature review facilitated the development of the research instruments, to assess best practices in terms of the identified key drivers. The research questions are: • The existence of communication practices and processes at SACHM, and • The effective dissemination of information necessary for effective decision making. The statistical results of the empirical study reveal conclusively that the organisational communication, information dissemination and decision making at the SACHM was indeed ineffective. The results indicate the following: • The lack of adherence to shared values and common purpose between managers and staff regarding equity, lack of participation in decision-making, lack of service delivery to local, regional and national communities, lack of mutual respect, lack of dedication, lack of a people centered approach, and finally a lack of interpersonal communication and negotiation; • The lack of application of basic communication fundamentals namely the bottom-up and top-down approaches; • The lack of access to timeous and accurate information to make effective decisions; and • The non-existence of communication processes and practices. Dysfunctional organisational communication and inadequate information flow to both employees and managers, has been identified as having an impact on effective decision making. Arising from the findings of the research, a communication audit is recommended to facilitate the establishment of an effective communication and information framework for the museum.

This thesis investigates the emergence and development of Muslim Chaplaincy at Princeton and Rutgers universities. It seeks to answer three questions: (1) How did university-based Muslim Chaplaincy develop? (2) What roles did Muslim Chaplains play? and (3) Why did university administrators hire and sanction Muslim Chaplains? The thesis explores these questions by examining the decision making processes of administrators through in-depth case studies based on observations, document analysis, and 64 interviews with current and former Muslim Chaplains, University Chaplains, Muslim student leaders, faculty members, alumni, and other administrators. The case studies are prefaced by a description of the national context for campus Muslim Chaplaincy based on 36 interviews with religious life professionals at 21 other colleges. My research suggests that Muslim Chaplaincy at Princeton emerged through the advocacy of Christian University Chaplains; in contrast, at Rutgers the role was created by a local community organisation and sanctioned by student affairs professionals. Campus Muslim Chaplains played a variety of roles. For Muslim students, they provided religious, pastoral, advisory, educational, programmatic, and liaisonal support. They also served other university constituents and local community members. Administrators at both institutions had multiple rationales for hiring and sanctioning Muslim Chaplains: to advance social justice for Muslim students, to provide an educational benefit to non-Muslim students, to remain competitive with peer institutions, to overcome histories of exclusion, and to avoid potential crisis situations. The goal of this study is to make two contributions to knowledge. In terms of its subject, this thesis provides the first empirical case studies of Muslim Chaplaincy in American higher education and frames these cases within the national context. In terms of theory, this study aims to develop an understanding of the administrative rationales behind the creation of Muslim Chaplaincies. It does this through the application of the political, cultural, and adaptive sociological models of the university. In particular, it draws on the concepts of institutional isomorphism and risk mitigation/management as explanations for the emergence of Muslim Chaplaincy.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
Inspired by the increasingly high visibility of British Muslim NGOs (BMNGOs), by the lack of research on their discourses and by the growing salience of frames theory within the mainstream NGO sector, this thesis offers a significant and original contribution by exploring, describing, and analysing the discourse of two BMNGOs carefully selected as case studies: Islamic Relief (IR) and MADE (Muslim Action for Development and the Environment). The primary aim of the thesis is empirical, driven by the research question: ‘what frames seem to be at work in the discourse of BMNGOs?’ Through an in-depth analysis of a range of public documents produced by the two case studies (e.g. annual reports and websites), the thesis identifies and analyses the main frames used by IR and MADE to articulate three key aspects of their discourses: i) organisational identity; ii) mobilisation efforts; and iii) conceptualisations of their supporter base. Guided by this overarching research question, the thesis offers an original and interdisciplinary insight into the nuances of the case studies’ meaning systems, thereby showing their complexities and resonance with multiple narratives and ideational repertoires. The emerging ‘thick descriptions’ of IR and MADE represent, in and of themselves, the main results of the study, which is intended to enable readers from different disciplinary backgrounds to gain a nuanced insight into BMNGOs’ discourses. At a secondary level, the thesis also pursues the theoretical aim to start exploring how the frames identified in the study inform the two research sub-questions: ‘how to think about BMNGOs?’ and ‘how to think about British Muslim civic engagement?’ Several observations are put forward in this regard. Taken together, these suggest that IR can be understood as a faith-based organisation that simultaneously draws on a range of heritages and increasingly offers opportunities for active citizenship among British Muslims within the framework of what is broadly characterizable as a ‘NGO-led order’. On the other hand, the thesis suggests that MADE can be understood as an exemplar of the current era of ‘loose activist networks’, more precisely as a ‘Muslim lifestyle’ social movement organisation that promotes among British Muslims a multifaceted form of civic engagement inspired by an Islamic ethical framework.

Streszczenie:
This research focuses on agencification and quangocratisation (AQ) through a comparison of the experiences of South Korea and the UK. Although a number of studies of AQ have been produced recently, these reforms remain inadequately understood. Since AQ involves the structural disaggregation of administrative units from existing departments, executive agencies and quangos have distinct characteristics which are quite different from ordinary core departments. There are a number of factors which influence these changes; and this thesis explores nine existing theories which are available to explain these phenomena. Case studies are presented of Tate Modern in the UK and the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA), which are carefully analysed to examine the validity of those nine arguments. Although cultural agencies, which show some unique features, have become increasingly an essential part of the national economy, they have scarcely been researched from the viewpoint of public policy. This thesis endeavours to explore distinctive characteristics of this policy area; and moreover, it examines the diverse variables which have an impact on policy formation and its results through the process of comparison of arguments. The major tasks of this thesis are to investigate the applicability of the nine arguments and to weigh their merits. As a corollary of this comprehensiveness, it examines the whole public sectors of both countries, in order to show the broader picture and to understand the processes of changes and their backgrounds. More profoundly, similarities and differences between both countries are compared from both macro and micro perspectives. At the same time, the results of AQ are analysed through the comparison of outputs or outcomes before and after these changes, with a view to exploring whether their rationales are appropriate. Furthermore, it also examines the institutional constraints which influence not only the change of agencies but also their performances. Besides which, it seeks to find strategies for overcoming these constraints. This thesis adopts systematic and comprehensive approaches regarding basic concepts and data. It draws on theories of comparative research, the scope of the public sector, the classification and analysis of agencies and quangos, and theories underlying the detailed components of each argument and epistemological assumptions. Therefore, it suggests various aspects which enable us to broaden our understanding of the changes within the public sector; and to generate practical understanding to inform real world reform.

"Stakeholders : a source of competitive advantage? : an analysis of the influence of stakeholders on the strategies of independent, rural, Scottish museums during their organisational life cycle". Streszczenie:
Data indicates that Scottish museum attendance is rising annually, yet anecdotal comments appear to contradict this evidence. Explanations for this dichotomy are inevitably complex and varied, but variations in organisational performance have been explained by the Resource-Based View, which argues an organisation’s competitive advantage stems from its ability to access and use resources. This perspective is examined through the concept of stakeholder theory. This thesis investigates the influence stakeholders have on independent, rural Scottish museums during the organisational life cycle, and whether this is a source of competitive advantage. The research involved an exploratory survey to scope the characteristics and environment in which Scotland’s museums were operating, but also a typology for further research. The outcome was to adopt a phenomenological approach to investigate fourteen independent, rural, museums strategies during the organisational life cycle, drawing on stakeholder models proposed by Mitchell, Agle & Wood (1997) and Jawahar & McLaughlin (2001). This process involved interviewing 141 stakeholders to discuss their experiences in shaping these museums’ strategies. Using narrative analysis, it emerged that these museums’ strategies were influenced by different stakeholders during the organisational life cycle and this is reflected in a model developed from these findings. Growth museums were characterised by either an entrepreneurial leader or a board of trustees working in collaboration with key paid staff to access resources, particularly funding. By contrast, mature stage museums were dominated by a definitive stakeholder centred on a group of trustees who also occupied other stakeholder groups, notably volunteers and the community. This definitive stakeholder provided these museums with many of their resources, which proved to be an organisational strength, but also a weakness. The museum in decline and which ceased trading during this study, closed as a result of losing the definitive stakeholder’s confidence and withdrawing funding. It was evident that stakeholders did influence museum strategy, but the definitive stakeholder explained a museum’s competitive advantage

Folly, Rebecca P. F. "The subjective experiences of Muslim women in family-related migration to Scotland". Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/6273.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
Muslim family members constitute a significant migration flow to the UK (Kofman et al., 2013). Despite such observations, this form of mobility is under-explored in geographic scholarship on migration. Accordingly, this thesis examines the subjective experiences of migration of a small group of Muslim women, who migrated either with or to join their families in Scotland. Participant observation, focus groups and the life narratives of eight women are used to gain an in-depth understanding of both the reasons for and the consequences of migration for this group of Muslim women. In addition, this thesis examines the role of a secular community-based organisation in supporting migrants in their everyday lives. Drawing on conceptual approaches to migration, this study reveals diverse and complex motivations among participants in “choosing” to migrate. Far from “victims” or “trailing wives”, participants privileged their children's needs but also the possibility to transform their sense of self through migration. The study draws attention to the struggles of daily life in Scotland where, bereft of extended family, the synchronisation of migration with childbirth resulted in some participants enduring years of isolation. Such struggles resulted in changes in the home, with husbands providing both physical and emotional support. The experience of migration affected the women's religious identities, providing solace as well as a way to assert belonging in Scotland by drawing on Islamic theology. The community-based organisation provided a “safe space”, bridging the secular and non-secular and offering women the chance to socialise, learn and volunteer. The study shows that volunteering provided not only a way into paid work but also shaped women's subjectivities and home lives. However, the re-direction of national government funding towards “Muslim problems” threatens to undermine the organisation's ability to continue to meet the local needs of Muslim migrant women.
