Streszczenie:
This chapter describes the nature and magnitude of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WRMSDs) and their prevention and control. The incidence and severity of musculoskeletal disorders is described by body region and by occupation, and a conceptual model for the contributors and pathways to developing WRMSDs is described. Neck disorders and upper-extremity disorders as well as low back pain and lower-extremity disorders are described in detail, including evaluation, diagnosis, and prevention. Personal factors, physical exposures, and psychosocial stress that contribute to the development of WRMSDs are described. Ergonomic interventions to reduce or eliminate physical exposures are stressed as critically important preventive measures.

Streszczenie:
Human movement is brought about by the musculoskeletal system under the control of the nervous system. By coordinated activity between the various muscle groups, forces generated by the muscles are transmitted by the bones and joints to enable the individual to maintain an upright or partially upright posture and bring about voluntary controlled movements. Biomechanics of human movement is the study of the relationship between the external forces (due to body weight and physical contact with the external environment) and internal forces (active forces generated by muscles and passive forces exerted on other structures) that act on the body and the eff ect of these forces on the movement of the body. This chapter specifically addresses developmental biomechanics as it relates to the development of coordination in children.

Streszczenie:
This chapter provides a comprehensive update on the prevention, recognition, and treatment of low bone mineral density in people with CF. As life expectancy improves, the extra-pulmonary complications of CF are becoming increasingly important to quality of life. Up to 25 per cent of CF patients have reduced bone mineral density in adulthood, leading to the development of fragility fractures which cause pain, thereby interfering with airway clearance and predisposing to pulmonary infection. Osteoporosis can be a relative contraindication for lung transplantation. Other important musculoskeletal issues including CF arthropathy, growth, and urinary incontinence are covered. CF arthropathy is a non-erosive episodic sero-negative arthritis, often difficult to treat and which may require specialist input. Urinary incontinence is common girls and women with CF and has a negative impact on quality of life and ability to complete therapies. The pathophysiology and management of urinary incontinence are discussed.

Streszczenie:
Musculoskeletal (MSK) complaints are common in childhood. The majority of causes are benign and self-limiting, but MSK symptoms may be the presenting feature of serious life-threatening illness or chronic disease. Pain is often attributed to minor trauma, and atraumatic causes including infectious, inflammatory, and oncologic conditions, amplified musculoskeletal pain syndromes, and normal skeletal growth variants need to be considered. The age of the child helps identify the possible developmental conditions unique to the growing paediatric skeleton. Evaluation and management requires a thorough history and physical examination, and understanding of normal development. This chapter reviews common MSK regional conditions in childhood.

♦ All patients with cerebral palsy have lower limb involvement♦ Determination of the pattern of neurological involvement and the degree of selective muscle control is important when considering orthopaedic intervention♦ The neurological insult is non-progressive but the musculoskeletal effects do progress.♦ Specific treatment aims must be identified and realistic targets defined♦ The appropriate treatment must be selected for the child’s age and stage of development♦ It is important to differentiate between dynamic and fixed contractures♦ Surgery is only one of the management options and is rarely successful if considered in isolation.

Streszczenie:
We review the origin and evolution of the facial musculature of mammals and pay special attention to the complex relationships between facial musculature, color patterns, mobility, and social group size during the evolution of humans and other primates. In addition, we discuss the modularity of the human head and the assymetrical use of facial expressions, as well as the evolvability of the muscles of facial expression, based on recent developmental and comparative studies and the use of a powerful new quantitative tool: anatomical networks analysis. We emphasizes the remarkable diversity of primate facial structures and the fact that the number of facial muscles present in our species is actually not as high when compared to many other mammals as previously thought. The use of new tools, such as anatomical network analyses, should be further explored to compare the musculoskeletal and other features of humans across stages of development and with other animal to enable a better understanding of the evolution of facial expressions.
