This paper studies an indoor multipath interference cancellation using the MMSE-CMA estimator for the unlicensed at 2.45 GHz of wireless communication systems. The proposed of the MMSE-CMA estimator can mitigate a superposition of the multipath interference at the receiver. As the result, the magnitudes of the channel characterization in the time domain are shown between the measured and estimated channel as a difference of number of iterations. Furthermore, we also confirm the multipath interference cancellation with the eye diagrams.

Radio frequency device-free localization based on wireless sensor network has proved its feasibility in buildings. With this technique, a target can be located relying on the changes of received signal strengths caused by the moving object. However, the accuracy of many such systems deteriorates seriously in the environment with WiFi and the multipath interference. State-of-the-art methods do not efficiently solve the WiFi and multipath interference problems at the same time. In this article, we propose and evaluate an adaptive weighting radio tomography image algorithm to improve the accuracy of radio frequency device-free localization in the environment with multipath and different intensity of WiFi interference. Field experiments prove that our approach outperforms the state-of-the-art radio frequency device-free localization systems in the environment with multipath and WiFi interference.

Streszczenie:
Direct sequence spread spectrum (DSSS) signal uses phase coherent signals where the information symbols are multiplied with a code sequence, commonly known as chips. The signals are processed at the receiver using the code sequence as a matched filter to extract the information symbols. Taking advantage of the spread processing gain derived from the matched filter, communications can be carried out at low signal levels, which is the preferred method for high quality underwater acoustic (UWA) communication and remote UWA communication. However, in practical applications, DSSS UWA communication will face lots of interferences including multipath interference, Doppler compression interference and phase fluctuation interference, which will seriously affect the performance of DSSS. This paper first analyzes the interferences that DSSS faces in practical applications based on multiple actual received data collected in different water areas. By calculating the gain of the matched filter loss, one can find that influence of phase fluctuation interference has the most serious impact on DSSS. Secondly, the corresponding receiver processing algorithms are given for these interferences, including the differential energy detector and Doppler estimation method. The performance of differential energy detector under the above interferences is analyzed, which shows that the differential energy detector is insensitive to slow phase fluctuation interference and multipath interference and the differential energy detector combined with Doppler compensation can work well based on moving at-sea data. Finally, the parameter design of DSSS system in practical application is discussed and parameter design of DSSS UWA communication system should comprehensively consider the Doppler compression interference and phase fluctuation interference.

This paper proposes a beamforming method in the presence of coherent multipath arrivals at the array. The proposed method avoids the prior knowledge or estimation of the directions of arrival (DOAs) of the direct path signal and the multipath signals. The interferences are divided into two groups based on their powers and the interference-plus-noise covariance matrix (INCM) is reconstructed through the doubly covariance matrix reconstruction concept. The composite steering vector (CSV) that accounts for the direct path signal and multipath signals is estimated as the principal eigenvector of the sample covariance matrix with interferences and noise removed. The optimal weight vector is finally computed using the INCM and the CSV. The proposed method involves no spatial smoothing and avoids reduction in the degree of freedom. Simulation results demonstrate the improved performance of the proposed method.

LoRa (or LoRaWAN) is by far the best known representative of narrowband communication systems designed for the Internet of Things. As a system dedicated specifically for long-range operations, it possesses a considerable processing gain for the energetic link budget improvement and a remarkable immunity to multipath and interference. The paper describes outcomes of measurement campaigns during which the LoRa performance was tested against these two factors, that is, a heavy-multipath propagation and a controlled, variable interference generated, respectively, in a reverberation chamber and an anechoic chamber. Results allow quantitative appraisal of the system behavior under these harsh conditions with respect to LoRa’s three major configurable parameters: the spreading factor, bandwidth, and code rate. They also allow dividing LoRa configurational space into three distinct sensitivity regions: in the white region it is immune to both interference and multipath propagation, in the light-grey region it is only immune to the multipath phenomenon but sensitive to interference, and in the dark grey region LoRa is vulnerable to both phenomena.

Wi-Fi-based indoor position sensing solutions have the advantages of easy integration in mobile phones and low cost by using existing Wi-Fi access points. The mainstream methods are commonly based on the received signal strength indicator (RSSI), which suffers from multipath interference in complicated indoor environments. Through the in-depth analysis of the multipath interference, an RSSI-assisted time difference of arrival (TDoA) method is proposed for Wi-Fi-based indoor position sensing in this work. The key idea is to compensate for the multipath interference in the received signals based on the coarse estimation using RSSI and TDoA calculation. A prototype system has been implemented to validate the proposed method. Experimental results have demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed method, especially for handling the multipath interference with small propagation delay difference. Experimental results show that the indoor position sensing system can achieve a 90th percentile error of 0.3 m. The proposed method can also achieve moderate computational complexity and moderate real-time performance compared to other methods.

Multipath routing holds a great potential to provide sufficient bandwidth to a plethora of applications in wireless sensor networks. In this paper, we consider the problem of interference that can significantly affect the expected performances. We focus on the performance evaluation of the iterative paths discovery approach as opposed to the traditional concurrent multipath routing. Five different variants of multipath protocols are simulated and evaluated using different performance metrics. We mainly show that the iterative approach allows better performances when used jointly with an interference-aware metric or when an interference-zone marking strategy is employed. This latter appears to exhibit the best performances in terms of success ratio, achieved throughput, control messages overhead as well as energy consumption.

In this paper, a multi-antenna based receiver structure for direct sequence code division multiple access (DS/CDMA) system is proposed. The proposed scheme exploits the excellent time resolution of a CDMA RAKE receiver and uses an antenna array beamforming structure to resolve multipath returns in both angular and time domains. A much higher diversity gain than that based only on the time domain diversity can be achieved. This work suggests a new space-time diversity paradigm, namely angular-time diversity, which differs from traditional Alamouti-type space-time coded schemes. The impairments caused by multipath and multiuser interference are analyzed. The performance of the proposed receiver in multipath fading channel is explicitly evaluated. An expression for uncoded system bit error probability is derived. Simulation results show the performance improvement in terms of BER due to the use of multi-antenna in the receiver, and the results illustrate that the multi-antenna based receiver works effectively in resolving multipaths in both angular and time domains to achieve performance improvement due to angular and time diversity gain provided by the multi-antenna system.

Streszczenie:
Multipath routing has been considered in the literature to provide bandwidth aggregation for high data rate applications. Because of the phenomena of inter-path interference in wireless networks, the overall throughput is far from being the summation of the provided ones by the different paths individually. One promising solution to this problem is to make use of interference aware metrics to build multiple paths such that the inter-path interference is minimised. In this work, we are interested in assessing the impact of a set of interference aware metrics on the performance of incremental multipath routing in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN). Incremental multipath routing builds one path per request/reply session and hence is more suitable to be combined to interference aware metrics. We review, implement and evaluate both active and passive monitoring metrics and show that for constrained networks such as WSNs, the latter are more adapted. Additionally, we show that within the passive monitoring metrics, the best one is not necessarily the most expensive to measure.

Streszczenie:
Underwater acoustic communications are challenging because channels are complex, and acoustic waves when propagating in the ocean are subjected to a variety of interferences, such as noise, reflections, scattering and so on. Spread spectrum technique thus has been widely used in underwater acoustic communications for its strong anti-interference ability and good confidentiality. Underwater acoustic channels are typical coherent multipath channels, in which the inter-symbol interference seriously affects the performance of underwater acoustic communications. Time-reversal mirror technique utilizes this physical characteristic of underwater acoustic channels to restrain the inter-symbol interference by reconstructing multipath signals and reduce the influence of channel fading by spatial focusing. This paper presents an M-ary cyclic shift keying spread spectrum underwater acoustic communication scheme based on the virtual time-reversal mirror. Compared to the traditional spread spectrum techniques, this method is more robust, for it uses the M-ary cyclic shift keying spread spectrum to improve the communication rate and uses the virtual time-reversal mirror to ensure a low bit error rate. The performance of this method is verified by simulations and pool experiments.

Wireless signal reflecting, scattering or refracting causes the generation of multipath effects. Multipath causes multiple copies of the same wireless signal, These copies to different path to reach the receiver. The signal generated by a copy of the same produce serious interference. MIMO (Multiple-Input Multiple-Output) technology can make the interference caused by the multipath significantly reduced. In this paper, in the context of indoor and outdoor, through TP-LINK-WR845N (MIMO 2*2, which have 2 launching antennas and 2 receiving antennas) to verify the superior performance of this technology under indoor condition, at the same time we discover that the MIMO technology does not increase the coverage under outdoor condition, because there is only the power gain, no diversity gain.

In a typical multipath propagation environment, there exists a strong direct path signal accompanying with several weak multipath signals. Due to the strong direct path interference and other masking effects, the Direction-of-Arrival (DOA) of a weak multipath signal is hard to be estimated. In this paper, a novel method is proposed to estimate the DOA of multipath signals with ultralow signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). The main idea is to increase the SNR and signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) of the desired multipath signal in time-delay domain before DOA estimation processing. Firstly, the cross-correlation functions of the direct path signal and the received array signal are calculated. Then, they are combined and constructed to an enhanced array signal. Under certain conditions, the SNR and SIR of the desired signal can be significantly increased. Finally, the DOAs of multipath signals can be estimated by conventional technologies, and the associated time delays can be measured on the DOA-time-shift map. The SNR and SIR gains of the desired signal are analyzed theoretically, and theoretical analysis also indicates that the Cramer–Rao bound can be reduced. Simulation examples are presented to verify the advantages of the proposed method.

Multipath propagation of radio waves negatively affects to the performance of telecommunications and radio navigation systems [1, 3]. When performing time and frequency synchronization tasks of spatially separated standards, the multipath signal propagation aggravates the probability of a correct synchronization and introduces an error. The presence of a multipath signal reduces the signal-to-noise ratio in the received signal, which in turn causes an increase in the synchronization error. The mathematical models of multipath interference suppression in the time and in the frequency domain are presented in the article. Compared to time processing, processing in the frequency domain reduces computational costs. The operation of suppression in the time domain has been verified experimentally.

AbstractMultipath propagation occurs in many situations of radar measurements in complex environments. The unwanted effects range from interference over the radar channels, which causes amplitude fading and a corrupted direction of arrival (DOA) estimation, to the detection of ghost targets in an angle of arrival of the multipath direction. Due to the different number of reflections, polarimetric radars are capable to separate certain multipaths from direct paths if the target is known in advance. Furthermore, it is possible to separate objects with different polarimetric features in DOA that are located in the same radial distance to the radar. In this paper, a new approach to DOA detection based on the coherent Pauli decomposition is presented. With this approach, important multipath and DOA effects are analyzed and measurement results at 77 GHz on canonical objects in an anechoic chamber are presented. The results prove the feasibility of the approach and demonstrate the occurring effects.

Furthermore, the OFDM system was added to the RFID tag signals to improve the sensitivity of SNR in the Rayleigh fading channel. The SNR of tag signal is not sensitive in the multipath Rayleigh fading channel. Multipath interference has been one of the most difficult problems when using global navigation satellite system-based vehicular navigation in urban environments. In this article, we develop a multipath mitigation algorithm exploiting the sparse estimation theory that improves the absolute positioning accuracy in urban environments. The navigation observation model is established by considering the multipath bias as additive positioning errors, and the assumption for the proposed method is that global navigation satellite system signals contaminated due to multipath are the minority among the received signals, which makes the unknown bias vector sparse. We investigated an improved elastic net method to estimate the sparse multipath bias vector, and the global navigation satellite system measurements can be corrected by subtracting the estimated multipath error. The positioning performance of the proposed method is verified by analytical and experimental results.

Time difference of arrival (TDOA) measurement algorithm is a key technology for estimating direction of arrival (DOA) of an underwater sound source. In strong multipath interference, the pseudo-peaks in a correlation function disturb the detection of a correct time position and lead to a large TDOA measurement error. The proposed algorithm computes a time difference by taking cross-correlation of two impulse responses and improves robustness to multipath interference. The comparison of TDOA algorithms is done by evaluating the position accuracy of underwater sound source in both simulation and experiment.

Streszczenie:
To reduce the operational complexity of the multipath estimating delay lock loop (MEDLL) and improve its anti-multipath performance for strobe correlators, a combination anti-multipath scheme, namely, the MEDLL on-strobe correlation technique, is proposed for global navigation satellite system (GNSS) signal processing. Short-delay multipath rays are separated from the strobe correlation function by the MEDLL mechanism; the dot product between the estimation residue and the standard correlation function or the BOC-PRN correlation function is then computed to eliminate the potential tracking ambiguity. Finally, this non-coherent combination result is sent to the loop filter to obtain anti-multipath code tracking. The proposed method is analysed via simulator data with a software receiver under different front-end bandwidth conditions. The results corroborate the better multipath mitigation capability and lower computational burden, although it is still difficult to eliminate all multipath interference, especially when the front-end bandwidth is insufficient.

Streszczenie:
This research presents a wireless communication system using Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (16QAM) depending on using of the Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM). OFDM transmission system can effectively reduce inter symbol interference (ISI) caused by multipath fading, especially in the case of broadband data transmission. There are two kind of interference; inter symbol interference (ITSI) and inner symbol interference (INSI). ITSI is the interference caused by the delayed waves with larger than OFDM symbol duration, in order to avoid ITSI effectively, we insert guard interval every each OFDM symbol. On other hands, INSI is the interference caused by the delayed waves with less than OFDM symbol duration. To avoid INSI, this work proposes a new scheme in order to estimate the times of delayed waves by using distinctive characteristics of OFDM signal, which is inserted pilot signal periodically in frequency axis before IFFT at the transmitter. In this paper, we evaluate the estimation accuracy of the proposed estimation method and the BER performance of the proposed system under multipath fading environment by computer simulation with MATLAB.

Streszczenie:
This paper presents the performance analysis of the multiband orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MB-OFDM) ultra-wideband (UWB) systems for multipath fading and multiuser interference channels. A closed form approximation of the BER performance of the MB-OFDM UWB system with multiple interferences is proposed. Based on the derived approximation, the effects on the BER performance for the choice of the codeword constraint lengths of the convolutional encoder, the length of the cyclic prefix, and the multiuser environments of two or more interferers are thoroughly discussed. Four UWB multipath fading channels are also investigated for the BER performance of the MB-OFDM UWB system. The simulated results provide us with useful information to appropriately choose the parameters of the MB-OFDM UWB system for the sake of achieving the BER performance that conforms to requirement of the FCC standards.

Streszczenie:
Among various ways to eliminate the multipath effect in high-precision global navigation satellite system positioning, the multipath hemispherical map (MHM) is a typical multipath correction method based on spatial domain repeatability, which is suitable for not only static environments, but also some dynamic carriers, such as ships and aircraft. So, it has notable advantages and is widely used. The MHM method divides the sky into grids according to the azimuth and elevation angles of satellite, and calculates the average of the residuals within the grid points as its multipath calibration value. It is easy to implement, but it will inevitably lead to excessive or insufficient multipath correction in the grid. The trend surface analysis-based multipath hemispherical map (T-MHM) method makes up for this deficiency by performing trend surface analysis on the multipath spatial changes within the grid points. However, the effectiveness of T-MHM is limited and less capable of resisting noise interference due to the multicollinearity between the independent variables caused by the special spatial distribution of multipath sampling and the overfitting problem caused by ignoring the multipath anisotropy. Thus, we proposed an improved multipath elimination method named AT-MHM (advanced trend surface analysis-based multipath hemispherical model), which cautiously judges the occurrence of the above problems and gives corresponding solutions. This was extended to double-difference mode, which expands the scope of application. The performance of AT-MHM in GPS pseudorange multipath mitigation was verified on geodetic receiver and low-cost receiver in a strong multipath environment with high occlusion.
