Streszczenie:
The area of multimedia information retrieval (MMIR) faces two major challenges: the enormously growing number of multimedia objects (i.e., images, videos, audio, and text files), and the fast increasing level of detail of these objects (e.g., the number of pixels in images). Both challenges lead to a high demand of scalability, semantic representations, and explainability of MMIR processes. Smart MMIR solves these challenges by employing graph codes as an indexing structure, attaching semantic annotations for explainability, and employing application profiling for scaling, which results in human-understandable, expressive, and interoperable MMIR. The mathematical foundation, the modeling, implementation detail, and experimental results are shown in this paper, which confirm that Smart MMIR improves MMIR in the area of efficiency, effectiveness, and human understandability.

Streszczenie:
Multimedia information is now routinely available in the forms of text, pictures, animation and sound. Although text objects are relatively easy to deal with (in terms of information search and retrieval), other information bearing objects (such as sound, images, animation) are more difficult to index. Our research is aimed at developing better ways of representing multimedia objects by using a conceptual representation based on Schank's conceptual dependencies. Moreover, the representation allows for users' individual interpretations to be embedded in the system. This will alleviate the problems associated with traditional semantic networks by allowing for coexistence of multiple views of the same information. The viability of the approach is tested, and the preliminary results reported.

Streszczenie:
The identification of the overlapped objects is a great challenge in object tracking and video data indexing. For this purpose, a backtrack-chain-updation split algorithm is proposed to assist an unsupervised video segmentation method called the "simultaneous partition and class parameter estimation" (SPCPE) algorithm to identify the overlapped objects in the video sequence. The backtrack-chain-updation split algorithm can identify the split segment (object) and use the information in the current frame to update the previous frames in a backtrack-chain manner. The split algorithm provides more accurate temporal and spatial information of the semantic objects so that the semantic objects can be indexed and modeled by multimedia input strings and the multimedia augmented transition network (MATN) model. The MATN model is based on the ATN model that has been used in artificial intelligence (AI) areas for natural language understanding systems, and its inputs are modeled by the multimedia input strings. In this paper, we will show that the SPCPE algorithm together with the backtrack-chain-updation split algorithm can significantly enhance the efficiency of spatio-temporal video indexing by improving the accuracy of multimedia database queries related to semantic objects.

Streszczenie:
Recent technological developments have increased the use of machine learning to solve many problems, including many in information retrieval. Multimedia information retrieval as a problem represents a significant challenge to machine learning as a technological solution, but some problems can still be addressed by using appropriate AI techniques. We review the technological developments and provide a perspective on the use of machine learning in conjunction with knowledge organization to address multimedia IR needs. The semantic gap in multimedia IR remains a significant problem in the field, and solutions to them are many years off. However, new technological developments allow the use of knowledge organization and machine learning in multimedia search systems and services. Specifically, we argue that, the improvement of detection of some classes of low-level features in images music and video can be used in conjunction with knowledge organization to tag or label multimedia content for better retrieval performance. We provide an overview of the use of knowledge organization schemes in machine learning and make recommendations to information professionals on the use of this technology with knowledge organization techniques to solve multimedia IR problems. We introduce a five-step process model that extracts features from multimedia objects (Step 1) from both knowledge organization (Step 1a) and machine learning (Step 1b), merging them together (Step 2) to create an index of those multimedia objects (Step 3). We also overview further steps in creating an application to utilize the multimedia objects (Step 4) and maintaining and updating the database of features on those objects (Step 5).

Streszczenie:
This paper illustrates an object-oriented programming environment, called Application Conference Interface (ACI), which has been designed in order to facilitate the implementation of cooperative information systems. It interfaces developers of cooperative applications with services provided by a software platform, called ImagineDesk. The platform offers a rich set of services which can be exploited by developers of cooperative applications in order to manage them, to exchange multimedia data and to control users' interactions according to their roles. Basically, the ACI provides a set of local abstractions of remote services. These abstractions take the form of local objects, hiding the details of the underlying physical network from the application developer. By exploiting the object-oriented paradigm, the ACI clearly confines the host environment and network constraints in few easily upgradable objects, thus resulting in a highly system-independent architecture.

Multimedia information has been extensively growing from a variety of sources such as cameras or video recorders. In order to select the useful multimedia objects, multimedia recommender system has been emerging as a tool to help users choose which multimedia objects might be interesting for them. However, given the complexity of multimedia objects, it is challenging to provide effective multimedia recommendations. In this paper, we therefore conduct a survey in both the multimedia information system and recommender system communities. We further focus on the works that span the two communities, especially the research on multimedia recommender systems. Based on our review, we propose a set of research challenges, which can be used to implicate the future research directions for multimedia recommender systems. For each research challenge, we have also provided the insights of how to perform the follow-up research.

Streszczenie:
Information is being presented these days in terms of text, data, images, video, and audio. Graphics and animations. Information is being disseminated through web sites which are either dynamic or static. Quality of the WEB site is however a big question. Users are quite concerned about quality of the WEB site. Too many operations if need to be undertaken for want of quality visualisation of the content such as Images, then the users loose interest in looking at that kind of content. WEB sites are presenting the content by integrating text and data with multimedia objects. Quality visualisation of the multimedia content would be the real issue as presenting these elements. The number of operations that the user is expected to carry must be minimised as much as possible.Quality presentation of the multimedia objects is most important for making available web sites to the customer satis-faction. Assessment of quality of the multimedia objects is needed to project the extent to which the users will be satis-fied with a web site that hosts different types of multimedia objects. In this paper the methods that computes quality of multimedia objects individually and also considering all types of multi-media objects as a whole are presented.

Introduction -- Background -- Overview of watermarking -- Natural language watermarking -- Software watermarking -- Semi-blind and reversible database watermarking -- Blind and reversible database watermarking -- Conclusion and future research -- Bibliography.
Digital watermarking has generated significant research and commercial interest in the past decade. The primary factors contributing to this surge are widespread use of the Internet with improved bandwidth and speed, regional copyright loopholes in terms of legislation; and seamless distribution of multimedia content due to peer-to-peer file-sharing applications. -- Digital watermarking addresses the issue of establishing ownership over mul-timedia content through embedding a watermark inside the object. Ideally, this watermark should be detectable and/or extractable, survive attacks such as digital reproduction and content-specific manipulations such as re-sizing in the case of images, and be invisible to the end-user so that the quality of the content is not degraded significantly. During detection or extraction, the only requirements should be the secret key and the watermarked multimedia object, and not the original un-marked object or the watermark inserted. Watermarking scheme that facilitate this requirement are categorized as blind. In recent times, reversibility of watermark has also become an important criterion. This is due to the fact that reversible watermarking schemes can provided security against secondary watermarking attacks by using backtracking algorithms to identify the rightful owner. A watermarking scheme is said to be reversible if the original unmarked object can be regenerated from the watermarked copy and the secret key.
This research covers three multimedia content types: natural language documents, software, and databases; and discusses the current watermarking scenario, challenges, and our contribution to the field. We have designed and implemented a natural language watermarking scheme that uses the redundancies in natural languages. As a result, it is robust against general attacks against text watermarks. It offers additional strength to the scheme by localizing the attack to the modified section and using error correction codes to detect the watermark. Our first contribution in software watermarking is identification and exploitation of weaknesses in branch-based software watermarking scheme proposed in [71] and the software watermarking algorithm we present is an improvised version of the existing watermarking schemes from [71]. Our scheme survives automated debugging attacks against which the current schemes are vulnerable, and is also secure against other software-specific attacks. We have proposed two database watermarking schemes that are both reversible and therefore resilient against secondary watermarking attacks. The first of these database watermarking schemes is semi-blind and requires the bits modified during the insertion algorithm to detect the watermark. The second scheme is an upgraded version that is blind and therefore does not require anything except a secret key and the watermarked relation. The watermark has a 89% probability of survival even when almost half of the data is manipulated. The watermarked data in this case is extremely useful from the users' perspective, since query results are preserved (i.e., the watermarked data gives the same results for a query as the nmarked data). -- The watermarking models we have proposed provide greater security against sophisticated attacks in different domains while providing sufficient watermark-carrying capacity at the same time. The false-positives are extremely low in all the models, thereby making accidental detection of watermark in a random object almost negligible. Reversibility has been facilitated in the later watermarking algorithms and is a solution to the secondary watermarking attacks. We shall address reversibility as a key issue in our future research, along with robustness, low false-positives and high capacity.

We describe the design and implementation of a system for logic-based multimedia retrieval. As high-level logic for retrieval of hypermedia documents, we have developed a probabilistic object-oriented logic (POOL) which supports aggregated objects, different kinds of propositions (terms, classifications and attributes) and even rules as being contained in objects. Based on a probabilistic four-valued logic, POOL uses an implicit open world assumption, allows for closed world assumptions and is able to deal with inconsistent knowledge. POOL programs and queries are translated into probabilistic Datalog programs which can be interpreted by the HySpirit inference engine. For storing the multimedia data, we have developed a new basic IR engine which yields physical data abstraction. The overall architecture and the flexibility of each layer supports logic-based methods for multimedia information retrieval.

"The effects of evaluation and rotation on descriptors and similarity measures for a single class of image objects". Thesis, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10210/564.

Streszczenie:
“A picture is worth a thousand words”. If this proverb were taken literally we all know that every person interprets images or photos differently in terms of its content. This is due to the semantics contained in these images. Content-based image retrieval has become a vast area of research in order to successfully describe and retrieve images according to the content. In military applications, intelligence images such as those obtained by the defence intelligence group are taken (mostly on film), developed and then manually annotated thereafter. These photos are then stored in a filing system according to certain attributes such as the location, content etc. To retrieve these images at a later stage might take days or even weeks to locate. Thus, the need for a digital annotation system has arisen. The images of the military contain various military vehicles and buildings that need to be detected, described and stored in a database. For our research we want to look at the effects that the rotation and elevation angle of an object in an image has on the retrieval performance. We chose model cars in order to be able to control the environment the photos were taken in such as the background, lighting, distance between the objects, and the camera etc. There are also a wide variety of shapes and colours of these models to obtain and work with. We look at the MPEG-7 descriptor schemes that are recommended by the MPEG group for video and image retrieval as well as implement three of them. For the military it could be required that when the defence intelligence group is in the field, that the images be directly transmitted via satellite to the headquarters. We have therefore included the JPEG2000 standard which gives a compression performance increase of 20% over the original JPEG standard. It is also capable to transmit images wirelessly as well as securely. Including the MPEG-7 descriptors that we have implemented, we have also implemented the fuzzy histogram and colour correlogram descriptors. For our experimentation we implemented a series of experiments in order to determine the effects that rotation and elevation has on our model vehicle images. Observations are made when each vehicle is considered separately and when the vehicles are described and combined into a single database. After the experiments are done we look at the descriptors and determine which adjustments could be made in order to improve the retrieval performance thereof.

The concept of XML Information Object has been proposed by our research team. For management and reusing purpose, the Internet information is modelled as Information Object that can be manipulated and exchanged as a unit. We use an XML file as a unit to encapsulate text data and binary contents as an XML Object to realize the concept of Information Object. To realize the idea we have developed a storage management system called XML Document Storage (XDS). In addition, we have implemented the Information Sharing Workspace (ISW) as a workspace on which users can easily construct XML Objects and share XML Objects stored in XDS. In this thesis, we will model the total system, both the XDS and the ISW to give a more clear view for exploring advanced topic or issues to be addressed in the future. In particular, we will pay much effort on the improving of binary contents attachment in an XML object. In the previous version of XDS, the binary content is BASE64-encoded and embedded in an element of an XML object for transmission on the wire. This way will incur a problem of XML object size limitation due to the implementation constraints of XML and language tools. Another problem is on the performance in manipulating binary contents. To cope with these problems, we define several kinds of attachment objects to represent the binary contents and linked to an XML object for transmission. With the new approach the size limitation and the efficiency on manipulating binary contents are improved.

Streszczenie:
The problem of content management of multimedia data types (e.g., image, video, graphics) is becoming increasingly important with the development of advanced multimedia applications. Traditional database management systems are inadequate for the handling of such data types. They require new techniques for query formulation, retrieval, evaluation, and navigation. In this paper we develop a knowledge-based framework for modeling and retrieving image data by content. To represent the various aspects of an image object's characteristics, we propose a model which consists of three layers: (1) Feature and Content Layer, intended to contain image visual features such as contours, shapes, etc.; (2) Object Layer, which provides the (conceptual) content dimension of images; and (3) Schema Layer, which contains the structured abstractions of images, i.e., a general schema about the classes of objects represented in the object layer. We propose two abstract languages on the basis of description logics: one for describing knowledge of the object and schema layers, and the other, more expressive, for making queries. Queries can refer to the form dimension (i.e., information of the Feature and Content Layer) or to the content dimension (i.e., information of the Object Layer). These languages employ a variable free notation, and they are well suited for the design, verification and complexity analysis of algorithms. As the amount of information contained in the previous layers may be huge and operations performed at the Feature and Content Layer are time-consuming, resorting to the use of materialized views to process and optimize queries may be extremely useful. For that, we propose a formal framework for testing containment of a query in a view expressed in our query language. The algorithm we propose is sound and complete and relatively efficient.

Streszczenie:
Indexing video data is essential for providing content based access. In this paper, we consider how database technology can offer an integrated framework for modeling and querying video data. As many concerns in video (e.g., modeling and querying) are also found in databases, databases provide an interesting angle to attack many of the problems. From a video applications perspective, database systems provide a nice basis for future video systems. More generally, database research will provide solutions to many video issues even if these are partial or fragmented. From a database perspective, video applications provide beautiful challenges. Next generation database systems will need to provide support for multimedia data (e.g., image, video, audio). These data types require new techniques for their management (i.e., storing, modeling, querying, etc.). Hence new solutions are significant. This paper develops a data model and a rule-based query language for video content based indexing and retrieval. The data model is designed around the object and constraint paradigms. A video sequence is split into a set of fragments. Each fragment can be analyzed to extract the information (symbolic descriptions) of interest that can be put into a database. This database can then be searched to find information of interest. Two types of information are considered: (1) the entities (objects) of interest in the domain of a video sequence, (2) video frames which contain these entities. To represent these information, our data model allows facts as well as objects and constraints. We present a declarative, rule-based, constraint query language that can be used to infer relationships about information represented in the model. The language has a clear declarative and operational semantics. This work is a major revision and a consolidation of [12, 13].
