Streszczenie:
Multi-modal transportation is a logistics problem in which a set of goods have to be transported to different places, with the combination of at least two modes of transport, without a change of container for the goods. The goal of this paper is to describe TIMIPLAN, a system that solves multi-modal transportation problems in the context of a project for a big company. In this paper, we combine Linear Programming (LP) with automated planning techniques in order to obtain good quality solutions. The direct use of classical LP techniques is difficult in this domain, because of the non-linearity of the optimization function and constraints; and planning algorithms cannot deal with the entire problem due to the large number of resources involved. We propose a new hybrid algorithm, combining LP and planning to tackle the multi-modal transportation problem, exploiting the benefits of both kinds of techniques. The system also integrates an execution component that monitors the execution, keeping track of failures and replans if necessary, maintaining most of the plan in execution. We also present some experimental results that show the performance of the system.

Streszczenie:
Multi-modal transportation recommendation aims to provide the most appropriate travel route with various transportation modes according to certain criteria. After analyzing large-scale navigation data, we find that route representations exhibit two patterns: spatio-temporal autocorrelations within transportation networks and the semantic coherence of route sequences. However, there are few studies that consider both patterns when developing multi-modal transportation systems. To this end, in this paper, we study multi-modal transportation recommendation with unified route representation learning by exploiting both spatio-temporal dependencies in transportation networks and the semantic coherence of historical routes. Specifically, we propose to unify both dynamic graph representation learning and hierarchical multi-task learning for multi-modal transportation recommendations. Along this line, we first transform the multi-modal transportation network into time-dependent multi-view transportation graphs and propose a spatiotemporal graph neural network module to capture the spatial and temporal autocorrelation. Then, we introduce a coherent-aware attentive route representation learning module to project arbitrary-length routes into fixed-length representation vectors, with explicit modeling of route coherence from historical routes. Moreover, we develop a hierarchical multi-task learning module to differentiate route representations for different transport modes, and this is guided by the final recommendation feedback as well as multiple auxiliary tasks equipped in different network layers. Extensive experimental results on two large-scale real-world datasets demonstrate the performance of the proposed system outperforms eight baselines.

The problems of developing online decision support systems concern the complexity of the transportation management processes, the multi-dimensionality of data warehouses (DWs), and the multi-criteria of decision making. Such issues arise in the management processes by supporting them with adaptable information and communication infrastructure for the management of the freight’s transportation processes. Our research domain involves the assurance of infrastructure for the provision of smart services for the operative management of multi-modal transportation of freights under the conditions of the heterogeneity of communication channels and multi-criteria decision support. The complexity of managing multi-modal transportation processes raises some problems for ensuring the infrastructure for finding more optimal management solutions by the requirements of green development. This research aims to develop the approach for providing the infrastructure of intelligent smart services for adaptable implementation in management processes of online multi-modal freight transportation. The objectives are forwarded to construct the multi-criteria decision-making components and integrate them into the multi-layered, computer-based information management of intelligent systems. We present the steps of extension of the structure of the knowledge-based system with a multi-criteria decision support method, and the possibilities to work under the conditions of wireless networks and the recognition of context-aware situations. The results are demonstrated for the analysis of alternatives by assessing the multi-modal transportation corridors between the East and West regions of Europe, and the opportunities to evaluate them for more effective managerial perspectives under sustainable development requirements.

Streszczenie:
With the development of “One Belt, One Road” initiative and free trade area, the volume of cross-border international logistics involving multiple modes of transport has surged. Meanwhile, the proportion of using integrated transportation system in domestic trunk transport has increased. Multi-modal transport (MMT) based on green transport can realize intensive utilization of transport capacity resources, and implement sustainable transport management with three bottom lines of economic, environmental and social aspects. In this paper, the carbon emission index and regional transportation infrastructure utilization index are introduced to construct a multi-objective optimization model with sustainable goals of environmental protection, cost saving and social contribution. The poly-population genetic algorithm (PPGA) is used to overcome the limitation of the traditional genetic algorithm running to the local optimum. The model proposed by this paper quantifies environmental and social indicators, balances comprehensive performance of environment, economy and society, and provides quantitative decision making support for carriers, international freight forwarder or third party logistics to carry out green MMT.

Streszczenie:
The paper presents the system optimization (SO) framework of Tripod, an integrated bi-level transportation management system aimed at maximizing energy savings of the multi-modal transportation system. From the user’s perspective, Tripod is a smartphone app, accessed before performing trips. The app proposes a series of alternatives, consisting of a combination of departure time, mode, and route. Each alternative is rewarded with an amount of tokens which the user can later redeem for goods or services. The role of SO is to compute the optimized set of tokens associated with the available alternatives to minimize the system-wide energy consumption under a limited token budget. To do so, the alternatives that guarantee the largest energy reduction must be rewarded with more tokens. SO is multi-modal, in that it considers private cars, public transit, walking, car pooling, and so forth. Moreover, it is dynamic, predictive, and personalized: the same alternative is rewarded differently, depending on the current and the predicted future condition of the network and on the individual profile. The paper presents a method to solve this complex optimization problem and describe the system architecture, the multi-modal simulation-based optimization model, and the heuristic method for the online computation of the optimized token allocation. Finally it showcases the framework with simulation results.

In most developing countries, formal and informal transportation schemes coexist without effective and smart integration. In this paper, the authors show how to leverage opportunities offered by formal and informal transportation schemes to build an integrated multi-modal network. Precisely, the authors consider integration of rickshaws to a bus-train network, by taking into account accessibility and societal constraints. By modelling the respective networks with weighted graphs, a graph augmentation problem is solved with respect to a composite cost taking into account constraints on the use of rickshaws. The solution, is based on finding a minimum cost spanning tree of a merged graph. The method is applied in the South African context, in the city of Johannesburg where rickshaws are not yet a significant part of the transportation system. The implications of the study reveal that using non-motorised transportation services is a viable option of improving mobility in the city. The composite cost introduced herein could be used for new routing algorithm including societal, environmental, architectural contexts and commuter experiences through rating.

Models can provide valuable decision support in the ongoing effort to create a sustainable and effective modality mix in urban settings. Modern transportation infrastructures must meaningfully combine public transport with other mobility initiatives such as shared and on-demand systems. The increase of options and possibilities in multi-modal travel implies an increase in complexity when planning and implementing such an infrastructure. Multi-agent systems are well-suited for addressing questions that require an understanding of movement patterns and decision processes at the individual level. Such models should feature intelligent software agents with flexible internal logic and accurately represent the core functionalities of new modalities. We present a model in which agents can choose between owned modalities, station-based bike sharing modalities, and free-floating car sharing modalities as they exit the public transportation system and seek to finish their personal multi-modal trip. Agents move on a multi-modal road network where dynamic constraints in route planning are evaluated based on an agent’s query. Modality switch points (MSPs) along the route indicate the locations at which an agent can switch from one modality to the next (e.g., a bike rental station to return a used rental bike and continue on foot). The technical implementation of MSPs within the road network was a central focus in this work. To test their efficacy in a controlled experimental setting, agents optimized only the travel time of their multi-modal routes. However, the functionalities of the model enable the implementation of different optimization criteria (e.g., financial considerations or climate neutrality) and unique agent preferences as well. Our findings show that the implemented MSPs enable agents to switch between modalities at any time, allowing for the kind of versatile, individual, and spontaneous travel that is common in modern multi-modal settings.

Centrality plays a crucial role as agencies at the federal and state level focus on expanding the public transit system to meet the demands of a multimodal transportation system. Transit agencies have a need to explore mechanisms to improve connectivity by improving transit service. This requires a systemic approach to develop measures that can prioritize the allocation of funding to locations that provide greater connectivity, or in some cases direct funding towards underperforming areas. The concept of centrality is well documented in social network literature and to some extent, transportation engineering literature. However, centrality measures have limited capability to analyze multi-modal public transportation systems which are much more complex in nature than highway networks. In my study area, we propose measures to determine Network centrality from a QGIS SOFTWARE which is based on graph theoretic approach for all levels of transit service coverage integrating routes, schedules, socioeconomic, demographic and spatial activity patterns. The objective of using Network centrality as an indicator is to quantify and evaluate transit service in terms of prioritizing transit locations for funding; providing service delivery strategies, especially for areas with large multi-jurisdictional, multi-modal transit networks; providing an indicator of multi-level transit capacity for planning purposes; assessing the effectiveness and efficiency for node/stop prioritization; and making a user friendly tool to determine locations with highest connectivity while choosing transit as a mode of travel. The proposed analysis offers reliable indicators that can be used as tools for determining the transit connectivity of a multimodal transportation network.

To ensure a successful implementation of Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) on the roadways, we must have an accurate assessment of the current condition of our transportation network and we need to continually monitor its performance and make necessary improvements as needed. To better understand how technologies like ITS are helping to optimise time on the road, it is good to gain a basic understanding of how this technology works. Intelligent transportation systems (ITS) are networks that offer users the option to either drive on a pre-programmed route that takes an average of around 40 to 45 minutes, or choose a different route that would take around 30 minutes. This often results in users spending less time in their cars when compared to a traditional drive-through model. A 2021 report from McKinsey & Company states “A typical smart city is envisioned, featuring shorter trips (either for commute, errands, or entertainment), along dedicated, on-demand routes to reduce the need to travel long distances as well as the physical inefficiencies of vehicle miles traveled". Integrated transportation services could also offer modern commutes a greater range of options, such as having the ability to purchase and use an electric vehicle (EV) onsite, or utilise public transit on the go. This multi-modal approach is proving more and more popular with businesses and cities, and many are making it a priority when it comes to implementing new infrastructure. Cities like Beijing, for example, have already started to incorporate autonomous vehicle (AV) fleets, which services drivers as they travel during their commute. Plans such as these portray a great future for the transportation network, but we have some way to go to reach this goal. Here we will discuss some other efficient solution for Intelligent Traffic Management.

Public transportation in the U.S. often relies on multi-modal components that represent a system of systems as exemplified by transit rail. Currently, transit rail safety is measured for individual railroads as the number of events/fatalities/injuries by productivity level (typically, revenue miles). Barriers for measuring the safety of the transit transportation system of systems include the aggregation of transit properties for a passenger’s trip and the varieties of safety management systems used by transit agencies. An alternative perspective asks how safe passengers are, instead of how safe railroads are. It posits a fundamental shift to a human-centric perspective on transportation system safety which is the foundation for determining the level of transportation safety equity outcomes. The major barrier to ensuring safety equity outcomes is a lack of safety data for subgroups of the population, based on biodemographic, socioeconomic and disability data. These data are essential for determining if safety levels are equal across subgroups of the population, or if transportation safety inequities exist. If safety outcomes differ across subgroups of the popula-tion, then root causes for the disparity need to be determined and mitigated. The public service duty is to ensure that risk interventions and safety outcomes apply equitably to all.

Indonesia's air transportation business has grown substantially to suit the community's transportation needs. An increasing number of people travel by airline each year. By way of secondary and tertiary multiplier effects, the intensifying competition between airport services provided in neighboring regions is likely to have a multiplier influence on a territory. Simultaneously, airport services that are more competitive are focused on areas with rising economic growth in sectors like tourism. MAS is an airport system consisting of at least two airports within a metropolitan area that support civil aviation. MAS includes both big and small airports. MAS is the development of an air transportation system to suit the growing demand for air transportation services. As an example of an integrated multi-model airport design in Indonesia, this research will examine Juanda International Airport, Surabaya, as the major airport and Abdul Rachman Saleh Airport as the secondary airport. In order to establish an integrated multi-modal airport in Indonesia, it is necessary to adopt a multi-airport system. This study's airport location is in East Java Province and includes two airports: Juanda International Airport and Abdul Rachman Saleh Airport. The Juanda International Airport is situated in Sedati, Sidoarjo, whilst the Abdul Rachman Saleh Airport is in Pakis, Malang Regency. Using modelling findings and final passenger statistics, airport capacity in 2045 is determined. The results demonstrated the necessity for more comprehensive points in the MADAM simulation used in this research study, which can estimate a number of crucial parameters. The author extends the previously proposed combined asymptotic method (CAM) of seismic SSI analysis for the multi-support systems and applies it to the transportation portal as a double-support system (together with the reactor building). The key issue is the development of the structural dynamic stiffness matrix condensed to the supports by the modal approach. Then the condensed structural matrix is combined with the soil dynamic stiffness matrix also condensed to the rigid basements. As a result, a very simple linear system is solved in the frequency domain. This gives the transfer functions from the free-field motion to the motion of the basements. The only important limitations are the linearity of the soil’s and structure’s properties and the rigidity of the basements. The results for the sample system are checked against the full SASSI solution. The results can be used to justify the further simplification of the system.

Bike-sharing is increasingly becoming more popular. Electric bikes as an emerging transportation technology have extended range and are less physically demanding, compared with regular bicycles, thus they can be incorporated into regular bike-sharing systems to attract more users. This study aims at capturing the users’ preference, while considering investors’ limitations and societal cost and benefits of each mode. The problem is defined as a mixed-integer non-liner problem, with nonlinear objective function and constraints. Because of the computationally challenging nature of the problem, a metaheuristic algorithm based on simulated annealing algorithm is proposed for its solution. The performance of the algorithm is tested in this study and convergence patterns are observed. The main findings of this study which are derived from the hypothetical numerical example, include but are not limited to: (1) the most popular public modes are bus and pedelec, because these two modes (bus and pedelec) are less expensive and have the ability to traverse longer distances in comparison to similar modes (i.e., e-scooter/car and bike), and (2) for small communities with short travel distances (feasible within the ranges of active modes), users would not choose fuel-consuming modes, and thus their choice is insensitive to fuel cost.

Purpose A sustainable freight transportation system involves freight processes that are economically efficient, socially inclusive and environment friendly. For enhancing sustainability in the freight operations, mode selection is a crucial strategic decision. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is selecting the best mode, or a combination of modes based on various criteria to carry shipments from origin to destination. Design/methodology/approach This study has used an integrated grey relational analysis based intuitionistic fuzzy multi-criteria decision-making process (GRA–IFP) and fuzzy multi-objective linear programming model. Three scenarios have been developed for analyzing sensitivity of decision variables with the variations in parameters under relevant conditions. A real case of Indian third-party logistics service provider has been used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the model. Findings The most relevant criterion emerged out in this study for multi-mode selection problem is costs. It can be concluded from the study that multi-modal freight transportation has the potential to improve the sustainability of freight transportation by reducing the costs, damages, emissions, traffic congestion and by increasing the speed of delivering the shipment. The sensitivity analysis further shows that road is the economical mode, whereas sea and rail together are the greenest as well as socially responsible modes of transportation. Originality/value This study provides an integrated tool, which can be used by freight transporters to decide upon the sustainable modes of transportation for their various shipments.

The global warming problem due to greenhouse gas emission has become very serious. Moreover, in the transportation section, the construction of a sustainable transportation system in the environment has been an important subject. Not only improvement of service level of modes, except those of private vehicles, but also consciousness for the environmental problem of an individual trip maker is important for eco-commuting promotion. Eco-consciousness can be changed under the influence of other people. The multi-agent simulation system for planning of ecocommuting promotion is developed using a social interaction model for eco-consciousness in this study. Modal shift is modeled by considering the result of a transport social experiment for eco-commuting promotion as reference. Influence of the promotion plan such as improvement of service level of public transport, promotion of individual eco-consciousness, and strengthening the interaction of individuals can be analyzed using the proposed model. Sustainable supplier selection and order allocation (SSSOA) is paramount to sustainable supply chain management. It is a complex multi-dimensional decision-making process augmented with the triple bottom line of sustainability. This research presents a multi-phase decision framework to address a SSSOA problem for the multi-echelon renewable energy equipment (Solar PV Panels) supply chain. The framework comprises of fuzzy Multi-Criteria Decision-Making techniques augmented with fuzzy multi-objective mixed-integer non-linear programming mathematical model. The various economic, environmental, and social objectives were optimized for a multi-period, multi-modal transportation network of the supply chain. The results show that among the various sustainable criteria selected in this study, product cost, environmental management system, and health and safety rights of employees are the most important for decision-makers. The results of the mathematical model highlighted the impact of multimodal transportation on overall cost, time, and environmental impact for all periods. An analysis of results revealed that transfer cost and customer clearance cost contribute significantly towards overall cost. Furthermore, defect rate was also observed to play a critical role in supplier selection and order allocation.

In this work, we study an integrated inventory-transportation problem in a supply chain consisting of region-bound warehouses located in different regions. The supply chain deals with multiple items that compete for storage space and transportation capacity with multi-modal transportation considering regional capacity constraint for each mode of transportation. The objective is to determine an optimal storage and transportation plan to satisfy the demand of all regions without shortages for known procurement plan for all items. The problem is formulated as a mixed integer programming (MIP) model for minimizing the total costs over a finite planning horizon. An MIP-based fix-and-optimize (F&O) heuristic with several decomposition schemes is proposed to solve the problem efficiently. The performance of the decomposition schemes is investigated against the structure of the sub-problems obtained. To enhance the performance, F&O is crossbred with two metaheuristics – genetic algorithm (GA) and iterated local search (ILS) separately, which lead to hybrid heuristic approach. Extensive numerical experiments are carried out to analyze the performance of the proposed solution methodology by randomly generating several problem instances built using data collected from the Indian Public Distribution System. The proposed solution approach is found to be computationally efficient and effective, and outperforming state of the art MIP solver Cplex for practical size problem instances. Also, the hybridization of F&O heuristic with GA and ILS boosts its performance although with a justified increase in the computational time.

Warning system for pedestrians (WSP), one of cooperative intelligent transport system (C-ITS) applications, is designed to increase safety for pedestrians but also for drivers and other road users. The evaluation of end-user acceptance and perceptions of this technology is crucial before deploying it in transportation systems. Five WSP human–machine interfaces (HMIs) were designed and simulated using a driver’s first-view video footage of driving through a pedestrian crossing in Newcastle upon Tyne. The five WSP designs were evaluated with 24 younger end users (35 years old and younger). This study first evaluated the usefulness of the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT) in modelling end-user acceptance in terms of behavioural intentions to use WSP. The results suggest that the UTAUT can be applied to investigate the end-user acceptance of WSP, with performance expectancy and effort expectancy influencing the behavioural intentions to use WSP. Furthermore, we investigated end-user attitudes towards various WSP human–machine interface (HMI) designs. Participants showed more positive attitudes towards visual-only interfaces than towards audio-only and multi-modal (combinations of visual and audio) interfaces. Above all, the findings of this research increase our understanding of public acceptance and perceptions of this C-ITS application.

This article addresses the problem of increasing transport services that intercontinental corridors demand from the urban infrastructure networks along their routes. Yet, attention has not been paid to the coordination between the transportation potentials of a city infrastructure network located on the path of an intercontinental corridor and the sustainable application of the corridor itself. This article discusses solving this problem by increasing the transportation capacities of the cities on the path of the corridor. With field studies in Chabahar, we observe the situation of its transportation infrastructure network to discover shortcomings and suggest required changes. This paper recommends the necessary changes and improvements in the urban transportation system of Chabahar to have a sustainable intercontinental corridor and an effective urban infrastructure network simultaneously. The research methods used include observation of traffic flow and behavior in travel origins, destinations, and paths in Chabahar. Then, this study builds a mathematical model with a graph technique to calculate the traffic capacities on the nodes and streets and determine places that require changes. Analyses show that 13,420 cars enter just the center of Chabahar city due to the increasing pressure of the Chabahar–Milak corridor. This paper recommends a multi-modal transportation system with an urban public transport network. It also suggests physical and geometric corrections in sight distances and longitudinal curves of streets, sidewalks, and squares. We find urban transportation failures in the city and present a comprehensive transportation plan for its improvement. This model is applicable in all cities on the route of corridors and assists their sustainable function and urban transport system simultaneously.

Multimodal transportation (MMT) refers to a system that utilizes various means of transportation to transfer people & goods from one place to another. Transit operations are measured as the maximum number of passengers that can be carried past a fixed route, in a given period. Investing in and using multiple modes of transportation does not only bring efficiencies but also goes a long way to reduce time & delay, as well as the overall cost of transportation. This paper presents the efficient mode of transportation system at selected routes in the Bengaluru city, the route stretch selected is 12.2 km in length and it has 8 major intersections. The type of pavement surface consists of both bituminous and Reinforced cement concrete (R.C.C). The complete study stretch is a 2-way 4-lane road. This study provides walkability-index, traffic volume studies in terms of passenger car unit (PCU), time and delay study, and Cost & time analysis. Four modes of transportation are used in this study to find the effective multimodal-transportation system namely, 2-wheeler, 4-wheeler, para-transit [15], and buses/metro. The outcome of this paper is to arrive at the shortest distance for reducing delay & time, and cost-effective travel using multi-mode transport. While focusing on the present condition of the para-transit transport facilities. The time, delay & cost during MMT and to provide a safe, cost-effective & convenient way to travel or transport. The result shows the reduction in time, cost & delay of transportation by using the MMT model. This MMT system could be adopted as an efficient mode of transportation on this route. Similar rural-urban junction routes around the world could use this approach for effective transit by making a modal study.

AbstractTravel demand models (TDMs) with freight forecasts estimate performance metrics for competing infrastructure investments and potential policy changes. Unfortunately, freight TDMs fail to represent non-truck modes with levels of detail adequate for multi-modal infrastructure and policy evaluation. Recent expansions in the availability of maritime movement data, i.e. Automatic Identification System (AIS), make it possible to expand and improve representation of maritime modes within freight TDMs. AIS may be used to track vessel locations as timestamped latitude–longitude points. For estimation, calibration and validation of freight TDMs, this work identifies vessel trips by applying network mapping (map-matching) heuristics to AIS data. The automated methods are evaluated on a 747-mile inland waterway network, with AIS data representing 88% of vessel activity. Inspection of 3820 AIS trajectories was used to train the heuristic parameters including stop time, duration and location. Validation shows 84⋅0% accuracy in detecting stops at ports and 83⋅5% accuracy in identifying trips crossing locks. The resulting map-matched vessel trips may be applied to generate origin–destination matrices, calculate time impedances, etc. The proposed methods are transferable to waterways or maritime port systems, as AIS continues to grow.

CAVs (Connected Autonomous Vehicles) can be effective in improving the efficiency of transportation, but heterogeneous multi-modal traffic flows may hinder this efficiency. This paper addresses the issue of heterogeneous traffic flows affecting the efficiency of transportation when CAVs enter the market and proposes a joint dedicated lane for CAVs and buses. In the bi-level program model for the joint dedicated lane, the lower-level is aimed at the multi-modal traffic assignment problem, while the upper-level is aimed at system optimality. For the lower-level, the paper examines the characteristics of various traffic flows in a mixed traffic flow, investigates the impact of CAV mixing on the road link’s capacity, calculates the travel time of various traffic modes accordingly, and generates a generalized travel cost function for each mode, which is solved using the diagonalized weighted successive averaging method (MSWA) algorithm. The upper-level issue considers the continuity of dedicated and non-dedicated road segments, and the goal is to reduce the overall cost for all travelers by utilizing the dedicated road deployment scheme as the decision variable, which is addressed using a genetic algorithm. Finally, numerical examples and sensitivity analyses are designed accordingly. The numerical example demonstrates that the joint dedicated lane not only lowers the overall cost of the system, but also enhances the efficiency of CAV and bus travel, optimizing the road network and promoting bus and CAV travel modes. The sensitivity analysis shows that in order to set up a joint dedicated lane, the frequency of bus departures and the penetration of CAVs are conditions that must be considered, and that the benefits of a joint dedicated lane can only be fully realized if the frequency of bus departures and the penetration of CAVs are appropriate.

The present study aims to understand the interaction between different vehicle classes using various vehicle attributes and thereby obtain useful parameters for modelling traffic flow under non-lane based heterogeneous traffic conditions. To achieve this, a separate coordinate system has been developed to extract relevant data from vehicle trajectories. Statistical analysis results show that bi-modal and multi-modal distributions are accurate in representing vehicle lateral placement behaviour. These distributions help in improving the accuracy of microscopic simulation models in predicting vehicle lateral placement on carriageway. Vehicles off-centeredness behaviour with their leaders have significant impact on safe longitudinal headways which results in increasing vehicular density and capacity of roadway. Another interesting finding is that frictional clearance distance between vehicles influence their passing speed. Analysis revealed that the passing speeds of the fast moving vehicles such as cars are greatly affected by the presence of slow moving vehicles. However, slow moving vehicles does not reduce their speeds in the presence of fast moving vehicles. It is also found that gap sizes accepted by different vehicle classes are distributed according to Weibull, lognormal and 3 parameter log logistic distributions. Based on empirical observations, the study proposed a modified lateral separation distance factor and frictional resistance factor to model the non-lane heterogeneous traffic flow at macro level. It is anticipated that the outcomes of this study would help in developing a new methodology for modelling non-lane based heterogeneous traffic.

In the last few years, with the exponential diffusion of smartphones, services for turn-by-turn navigation have seen a surge in popularity. Current solutions available in the market allow the user to select via an interface the desired transportation mode, for which an optimal route is then computed. Automatically recognizing the transportation system that the user is travelling by allows to dynamically control, and consequently update, the route proposed to the user. Such a dynamic approach is an enabling technology for multi-modal transportation planners, in which the optimal path and its associated transportation solutions are updated in real-time based on data coming from (i) distributed sensors (e.g., smart traffic lights, road congestion sensors, etc.); (ii) service providers (e.g., car-sharing availability, bus waiting time, etc.); and (iii) the user’s own device, in compliance with the development of smart cities envisaged by the 5G architecture. In this paper, we present a series of Machine Learning approaches for real-time Transportation Mode Recognition and we report their performance difference in our field tests. Several Machine Learning-based classifiers, including Deep Neural Networks, built on both statistical feature extraction and raw data analysis are presented and compared in this paper; the result analysis also highlights which features are proven to be the most informative ones for the classification.

Abstract. Human mobility analysis on large-scale mobility data has contributed to multiple applications such as urban and transportation planning, disaster preparation and response, tourism, and public health. However, when some unusual events happen, every individual behaves differently depending on their personal routine and background information. To improve the accuracy of the crowd behavior prediction model, understanding supplemental spatiotemporal topics, such as when, where and what people observe and are interested in, is important. In this research, we develop a model integrating social network service (SNS) data into the human mobility prediction model as background information of the mobility. We employ multi-modal deep learning models using Long short-term memory (LSTM) architecture to incorporate SNS data to a human mobility prediction model based on Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) data. We process anonymized interpolated GNSS trajectories from mobile phones into mobility sequence with discretized grid IDs, and apply several topic modeling methods on geo-tagged data to extract spatiotemporal topic features in each spatiotemporal unit similar to the mobility data. Thereafter, we integrate the two datasets in the multi-modal deep learning prediction models to predict city-scale mobility. The experiment proves that the models with SNS topics performed better than baseline models.

Sea level rise (SLR) and storm surge inundation are major concerns along the coast of the San Francisco Bay (the Bay Area), impacting both coastal communities and critical infrastructure networks. The oil industry comprises a complex and critical infrastructure network located in the Bay Area. There is an urgent need to assess consequences and identify risk-based solutions to increase the resilience of this industrial network in the Bay Area to SLR and storm surge. In this study, a comprehensive multi-modal network model representing the fuel supply system was built. A total of 120 coastal flooding scenarios, including four General Circulation Models, two Representative Concentration Pathways, three percentiles of future SLR estimates, and five planning horizons (20 year intervals from 2000 to 2100) were considered. The impact of coastal flooding on fuel transportation networks was studied at two different scales: regional and local. At the regional scale, basic network properties and network efficiency were analyzed across multiple flooding scenarios. At the local scale, cascading effects of individual node disruptions were simulated. Based on this research, smarter and more holistic risk-based adaptation strategies can be established which could lead to a more resilient fuel transportation network system.

Recent trends in federal laws and regulations have indicated the need to develop tools for multimodal transportation planning to replace “highway-only” techniques. The Vermont Agency of Transportation, as part of its Long Range Transportation Plan, initiated a study to develop Multimodal System Classification (MSC). The MSC approach considers both highway- and nonhighway-based modes of transportation, intermodal connectivity, and transportation and land use relationships. As a basis for this approach, broad-band corridors are defined that include all modes, including pedestrian and bicycle transport. In addition to corridors, urban, town, village, and other growth centers are defined as high-accessibility subareas where transit- and pedestrian-oriented development may be given priority. Five classes have been defined that reflect corridor and subarea needs: Class 1, major multi-modal corridors and transport centers; Class 2, other major routes and facilities; Class 3, minor routes and collectors; Class 4, local ways; and Class 5, town, village, and urban centers. Early consideration of social, environmental, and economic factors is achieved through definition of a series of land use overlays—scenic and aesthetic resources, historical and cultural resources, natural resources, and air- and noise-sensitive areas. As part of the development effort, the MSC concept was applied in two planning regions in Vermont. Not only did the concept of MSC prove useful, but the process was invaluable as a basis for public outreach and consensus building. Regional professional staff found MSC to be useful in development of regional transportation and land use plans.

Modeling traffic distribution and extracting optimal flows in multilayer networks is of the utmost importance to design efficient, multi-modal network infrastructures. Recent results based on optimal transport theory provide powerful and computationally efficient methods to address this problem, but they are mainly focused on modeling single-layer networks. Here, we adapt these results to study how optimal flows distribute on multilayer networks. We propose a model where optimal flows on different layers contribute differently to the total cost to be minimized. This is done by means of a parameter that varies with layers, which allows to flexibly tune the sensitivity to the traffic congestion of the various layers. As an application, we consider transportation networks, where each layer is associated to a different transportation system, and show how the traffic distribution varies as we tune this parameter across layers. We show an example of this result on the real, 2-layer network of the city of Bordeaux with a bus and tram, where we find that in certain regimes, the presence of the tram network significantly unburdens the traffic on the road network. Our model paves the way for further analysis of optimal flows and navigability strategies in real, multilayer networks.

Streszczenie:
Traffic signal priority is an operational technique employed for the smooth progression of a specific type of vehicle at signalized intersections. Transit signal priority is the most common type of traffic signal priority, and it has been researched extensively. Conversely, the impacts of freight signal priority (FSP) has not been widely investigated. Hence, this study aims to evaluate the energy and environmental impacts of FSP under connected vehicle environment by utilizing a simulation testbed developed for the multi-modal intelligent transportation signal system. The simulation platform consists of VISSIM microscopic traffic simulation software, a signal request messages distributor program, an RSE module, and an Econolite ASC/3 traffic controller emulator. The MOVES model was employed to estimate the vehicle fuel consumption and emissions. The simulation study revealed that the implementation of FSP significantly reduced the fuel consumption and emissions of connected trucks and general passenger cars; the network-wide fuel consumption was reduced by 11.8%, and the CO2, HC, CO, and NOX emissions by 11.8%, 28.3%, 24.8%, and 25.9%, respectively. However, the fuel consumption and emissions of the side-street vehicles increased substantially due to the reduced green signal times on the side streets, especially in the high truck composition scenario.
