Streszczenie:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to focus on the suitability of the multitrait-multimethod (MTMM) matrix approach for examining construct validity in human resource management (HRM) research. The authors also provide a number of suggestions on how to use MTMM more effectively in HRM research. Design/methodology/approach The authors start by presenting a basic introduction to MTMM approach. Next the authors briefly review the limitations of MTMM approach and suggested improvements. The authors elaborate on these limitations by providing HRM examples. To further illustrate these issues, the authors review employment interview research. Findings The construct validity analysis in HRM research suffers from three problematic assumptions of the classical MTMM approach: uncorrelated trait-method units, uncorrelated methods, and uncorrelated traits. The review of interview research shows that classical MTMM approach is by far the most popular approach given its relative simplicity and modest sample size requirements. This popularity stresses the significance of the review in highlighting these issues. Originality/value Several improvements to quantify the interpretations of MTMM analysis are available to researchers. This review closely examines how these limitations and proposed improvements influence HRM research, thereby making the methodological advances concerning the MTMM approach more accessible to HRM researchers and practitioners.

Streszczenie:
Assessing construct validity is a core task in psychology. Since Campbell and Fiske’s (1959) seminal article on multitrait-multimethod (MTMM) analysis, several different methodological approaches for the analysis of convergent and discriminant validity of MTMM data have been developed. In this article, two MTMM approaches are transferred to the general framework of confirmatory factor analysis and compared with the extended version of the correlated trait-correlated method minus one model ( Nussbeck, Eid, Geiser, Courvoisier, & Lischetzke, 2009 ): The multilevel MTMM model ( Maas, Lensvelt-Mulders, & Hox, 2009 ) and the three-mode model ( Oort, 2009 ). Assessing the construct validity of a German Big Five MTMM data set these three MTMM approaches are compared with regard to convergent and discriminant validity estimates and with regard to method effects. Advantages and limitations of each methodological approach will be discussed in detail.

Abstract The split-ballot multitrait-multimethod (SB-MTMM) approach has been used to evaluate the measurement quality of questions in survey research. It aims to reduce the response burden of the classic MTMM design, which requires repeating alternative formulations of a survey measure to the same respondent at least three times, by using combinations of two methods in multiple groups. The SB-MTMM approach has been applied to the European Social Survey (ESS) to examine the quality of questions across countries, including the differences in response design and measurement errors. Despite wide application of the SB-MTMM design in Europe, it is yet unknown whether the same quality of survey instruments can be achieved in both a different cultural context and in a logographic writing system, like the one in Taiwan. This study tests for measurement invariance and compares measurement quality in Taiwan and Denmark, by estimating the reliability and validity of different response scales using the SB-MTMM approach. By using the same questions as in the ESS, a cross-cultural comparison is made, in order to understand whether the studied response scales perform equally well in Taiwan, compared to a European country. Results show that quality estimates are comparable across countries.

The classical multitrait-multimethod (MTMM) matrix can be viewed as a two-dimensional cross-classification of traits and methods. Beside commonly used analysis methods such as structural equation modeling and generalizability theory, multilevel analysis offers attractive possibilities. If the focus is only on analyzing classical MTMM data, the multilevel approach has no surplus value, because the resulting model is equivalent to a confirmatory factor model with additional restrictions imposed by the multilevel parameterization. However, if the data contain further complexities, such as additional information on the traits or persons, multilevel analysis of MTMM data offers a flexible analysis tool with more possibilities than the other approaches.

Multitrait-multimethod (MTMM) data are characterized by three modes: traits, methods, and subjects. Considering subjects as random, and traits and methods as fixed, stochastic three-mode models can be used to analyze MTMM covariance data. Stochastic three-mode models can be written as linear latent variable models with direct product (DP) restrictions on the parameter matrices ( Oort, 1999 ), yielding three-mode factor models ( Bentler & Lee, 1979 ) and composite direct product models ( Browne, 1984 ) as special cases. DP restrictions on factor loadings and factor correlations facilitate interpretation of the results and enable easy evaluation of the validity requirements of MTMM correlations ( Campbell & Fiske, 1959 ). As an illustrative example, a series of stochastic three-mode models has been fitted to data of three personality traits of 482 students, measured with 12 items, through three methods.

First-order confirmatory factor analytic models have had widespread use in the analysis of multitrait-multimethod (MTMM) data. In contrast to the usual first-order confirmatory factor analytic model for the analysis of MTMM data, other covariance structure models have recently been proposed and advocated. Two such models are Wothke's covariance component analysis model and Browne's direct product model. The authors provide a conceptual and analytic discussion of those alternative procedures and compare them with the conventional first-order confirmatory factor analytic model. They consider the relationship between method factors and trait factors assumed under each model specification. General remarks about the nature of method factors and the likely reasons for lack of fit and ill-defined solutions frequently encountered with use of first-order factor models are presented. The authors also attempt to integrate the various approaches to modeling MTMM data and in so doing provide some perspective on selection of a particular covariance structure model for use in applied research.

The well known constructs of transformational and transactional leadership are still facing problems concerning their discriminant validity as substantive correlations have frequently been observed between them. Nine samples, including 178 supervisors and their 834 followers, completed the German version of the Transformational Leadership Inventory (TLI). Self-ratings and aggregated observer ratings were analyzed using a SEM-based multitrait-multimethod (MTMM) approach. First, the factorial structure was confirmed for both rating perspectives and across them. In the MTMM analysis, controlling for the method effects reduced the correlations between leadership constructs from a high to a small resp. medium level and the leadership scales can be discriminated. Facilitating the use of the TLI in practical issues, norms are provided for self and observer ratings.

Abstract Self-reported physical activity (PA) behavior with assistance from a secondary source has previously been used with adults with an intellectual disability (ID). Limited evidence of reliability and validity have been provided for this approach. This study examined evidence of convergent (CV) and discriminant (DV) validity for self-report with assistance from a secondary source as a measure of PA in adults with ID. PA of 37 participants with ID were assessed using (a) self-report, (b) accelerometers, and (c) pedometers. The multitrait-multimethod (MTMM) analysis was used to evaluate validity. MTMM analysis revealed high reliability among variables, low to strong CV, and moderate DV. The study outcomes provide initial convergent and discriminant validity evidence for this measure of PA in adults with ID.

We describe a behavioural genetic extension of the classic multitrait‐multimethod study design that allows estimating genetic and environmental influences on method effects in twin studies (MTMM‐T). Genetic effects and effects of the environment shared by siblings are interpreted as indicators of convergent validity. In an application of the MTMM study design, we used self‐ and peer report data to examine the higher‐order structure of the NEO‐PI‐R. Structural equation modelling did not support a general factor of personality in multimethod data. The higher‐order factor Stability turns out to be, at most, a weak trait factor. Genetic effects on method factors indicate that especially self‐reports but also peer reports show convergent validity between twins but not between methods. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

The validity and convergence between adolescents', mothers' and fathers' reports of five parenting constructs (family conflict, family communication, permissive parenting, authoritative parenting, and authoritarian parenting) were examined. Questionnaire data were collected from 302 families with children in the first and second year of secondary education and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was used to test three multitrait-multimethod (MTMM) models containing five parenting constructs as trait factors and adolescents', mothers', and fathers' reports as method factors. The CFA approach to MTMM data revealed a multidimensional structure in which both measurement method and parenting traits accounted for covariation among data. The CFA results also demonstrated that the family members' perspectives converged in the measure of family conflict and family communication constructs. Results also indicated method effects for the other three constructs reflecting parenting styles. Implications of these findings are discussed.

Abstract. It was investigated whether sensitivity to reward and sensitivity to punishment as conceived in Gray's (1991) Reinforcement Sensitivity Theory could be measured by means of a multitrait-multimethod (MTMM) model containing method factors representing situational variance. On the basis of the similarities between sensitivity to reward and punishment with promotion- and prevention-orientation, as discussed in the organizational context, the situational contexts were mainly chosen from school and organization. A total of 347 German participants completed a 58-item questionnaire measuring sensitivity to reward and punishment in the context of the team, of supervisors/instructors, and consumption. Confirmatory factor analysis revealed a factor for sensitivity to reward, for sensitivity to punishment, and three situational context factors (team, supervisor/instructor, and consumption). Thus, the situational variance could be controlled by means of the MTMM design. Moreover, some relations of sensitivity to reward and punishment with educational performance were found.

In the present study we applied a validation strategy for implicit measures like the IAT, which complements multitrait-multimethod (MTMM) analyses. As the measurement method (implicit vs. explicit) and underlying representation format (associative vs. propositional) are often confounded, the validation of implicit measures has to go beyond MTMM analysis and requires substantive theoretical models. In the present study (N = 133), we employed such a model ( Hofmann, Gschwendner, Nosek, & Schmitt, 2005 ) and investigated two moderator constructs in the realm of anxiety: specificity similarity and content similarity. In the first session, different general and specific anxiety measures were administered, among them an Implicit Association Test (IAT) general anxiety, an IAT-spider anxiety, and an IAT that assesses speech anxiety. In the second session, participants had to deliver a speech and behavioral indicators of speech anxiety were measured. Results showed that (a) implicit and explicit anxiety measures correlated significantly only on the same specification level and if they measured the same content, and (b) specific anxiety measures best predicted concrete anxious behavior. These results are discussed regarding the validation of implicit measures.

This study extends support for the construct validity of the three strongest physical self-concept measures for 395 Israeli university students (60% women) aged 18 to 54, demonstrating a new extension of the multitrait-multimethod (MTMM) design that incorporates external validity criteria and a test of jingle-jangle fallacies. Structural equation models of this MTMM data confirmed the a priori 23-factor structure of the three instruments, and the convergent and discriminant validity of factors from each instrument in relation to those from the other instruments. There were few age effects, whereas gender differences were smaller than expected and stable over age. In support of the known-group-difference approach, physical education majors had systematically higher physical self-concepts than management majors. Relations of body image to self-concept factors supported the convergent and discriminant validity of the physical self-concept factors and the separation of body fat from physical appearance self-concepts, but having a more obese body was not significantly related to health self-concept or global self-esteem factors.

ABSTRACT Myotubularins (MTMs) belong to a large subfamily of phosphatases that dephosphorylate the 3′ position of phosphatidylinositol 3-phosphate [PI(3)P] and PI(3,5)P2. MTM1 is mutated in X-linked myotubular myopathy, and MTMR2 and MTMR13 are mutated in Charcot-Marie-Tooth syndrome. However, little is known about the general mechanism(s) whereby MTMs are regulated or the specific biological processes regulated by the different MTMs. We identified a Ca2+-activated K channel, KCa3.1 (also known as KCa4, IKCa1, hIK1, or SK4), that specifically interacts with the MTMR6 subfamily of MTMs via coiled coil (CC) domains on both proteins. Overexpression of MTMR6 inhibited KCa3.1 channel activity, and this inhibition required MTMR6's CC and phosphatase domains. This inhibition is specific; MTM1, a closely related MTM, did not inhibit KCa3.1. However, a chimeric MTM1 in which the MTM1 CC domain was swapped for the MTMR6 CC domain inhibited KCa3.1, indicating that MTM CC domains are sufficient to confer target specificity. KCa3.1 was also inhibited by the PI(3) kinase inhibitors LY294002 and wortmannin, and this inhibition was rescued by the addition of PI(3)P, but not other phosphoinositides, to the patch pipette solution. PI(3)P also rescued the inhibition of KCa3.1 by MTMR6 overexpression. These data, when taken together, indicate that KCa3.1 is regulated by PI(3)P and that MTMR6 inhibits KCa3.1 by dephosphorylating the 3′ position of PI(3)P, possibly leading to decreased PI(3)P in lipid microdomains adjacent to KCa3.1. KCa3.1 plays important roles in controlling proliferation by T cells, vascular smooth muscle cells, and some cancer cell lines. Thus, our findings not only provide unique insights into the regulation of KCa3.1 channel activity but also raise the possibility that MTMs play important roles in the negative regulation of T cells and in conditions associated with pathological cell proliferation, such as cancer and atherosclerosis.

Abstract. The Hare Psychopathy Checklist – Revised (PCL-R) is among the most well-established instruments for the assessment of psychopathy. The PCL-R is a 20-item observer rating instrument based on file review and a semi-structured interview. The current study aimed to investigate the validity of the German adaptation of the PCL-R, its factor structure, construct validity, and association with socially desirable responding in a sample of male offenders ( N = 118). A parcel model with four facets and two factors yielded excellent model fit. Convergent and discriminant validity were assessed based on correlational analyses, a multitrait-multimethod (MTMM) matrix, and a canonical correlation analysis (CCA) including measures of psychopathy, antisocial personality disorder (ASPD), global personality dimensions, alexithymia, and impulsivity. The MTMM matrix as well as substantial associations with self-reported psychopathic traits and observer ratings of ASPD indicated convergent validity. Correlational analyses revealed that Factor 1 of the PCL-R was associated with low neuroticism, whereas Factor 2 was associated with impulsivity as well as with low agreeableness and conscientiousness. The PCL-R total score and Factor 2 were negatively correlated with impression management. Overall, the current findings support the validity of the German adaptation of the PCL-R.

Streszczenie:
Although fathers are increasingly involved in childrearing, less is known about how parental stress is perceived among mothers and fathers separately. The present study investigated the construct validity of the PSS in a community-based sample of Norwegian father–mother dyads with a child aged 4. A total of 1030 mothers and fathers ( N = 515 dyads) responded to the PSS, which is a much used instrument that assesses stress related to childrearing across 18 items. Construct validity was investigated using exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses and the multitrait–multimethod approach (MTMM). The results revealed that six of the items showed extensive ceiling-effects for both parents, and were excluded from further analysis. Dimensionality was examined for the remaining 12 PSS items. The results supported a two-factor solution for both fathers and mothers, reflecting parental stressors (9 items) and lack of rewards (3 items). The MTMM approach indicated convergent and discriminant validity across traits (Parental stressors and Lack of rewards) and methods (father vs mother rating). We also explored the network of PSS items for mothers and fathers, and found both similarities and differences. Overall, the results of the factor analyses have implications for the use of the PSS. The networks of PSS suggest that some items may be especially important when addressing parental stress with mothers and fathers.

ABSTRACT Coenzyme M (CoM) is methylated during methanogenesis from monomethyamine in a reaction catalyzed by three proteins. Using monomethylamine, a 52-kDa polypeptide termed monomethylamine methyltransferase (MMAMT) methylates the corrinoid cofactor bound to a second polypeptide, monomethylamine corrinoid protein (MMCP). Methylated MMCP then serves as a substrate for MT2-A, which methylates CoM. The genes for these proteins are clustered on 6.8 kb of DNA inMethanosarcina barkeri MS. The gene encoding MMCP (mtmC) is located directly upstream of the gene encoding MMAMT (mtmB). The gene encoding MT2-A (mtbA) was found 1.1 kb upstream of mtmC, but no obvious open reading frame was found in the intergenic region betweenmtbA and mtmC. A single monocistronic transcript was found for mtbA that initiated 76 bp from the translational start. Separate transcripts of 2.4 and 4.7 kb were detected, both of which carried mtmCB. The larger transcript also encoded mtmP, which is homologous to the APC family of cationic amine permeases and may therefore encode a methylamine permease. A single transcriptional start site was found 447 bp upstream of the translational start of mtmC. MtmC possesses the corrinoid binding motif found in corrinoid proteins involved in dimethylsulfide- and methanol-dependent methanogenesis, as well as in methionine synthase. The open reading frame ofmtmB was interrupted by a single in-frame, midframe, UAG codon which was also found in mtmB from M. barkeri NIH. A mechanism that circumvents UAG-directed termination of translation must operate during expression ofmtmB in this methanogen.

Streszczenie:
Introduction Based on self-determination theory, the Children’s Intrinsic Needs Satisfaction Scale (CINSS) measures autonomy, competence and relatedness at school, home and with peers. The factor structure and criterion-related validity of the CINSS in the Canadian youth population are tested using data from the Canadian Student Tobacco, Alcohol and Drugs Survey (CSTADS). Methods Data from the 2014/2015 CSTADS were analyzed for evidence of convergent and discriminant validity and for method variance. A multitrait multimethod (MTMM) confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was conducted to account for the conceptual structure of the measure. Criterion-related validity was demonstrated through correlations between related constructs, prosocial behaviours and behavioural problems, and the CINSS subscale scores. Mean differences on CINSS subscale scores between those who reported and did not report being bullied or bullying others were also examined. Results Correlation analyses demonstrated that, in general, correlations were higher between concept/context item pairs and lowest between items measuring different concepts and contexts. Cronbach’s alpha for concept and context subscales were high: α = 0.77 for autonomy, α = 0.85 for competence and α = 0.79 for relatedness. A MTMM CFA demonstrated that the model fit the data well, with no modifications. Criterion-related validity was demonstrated through correlations between CINSS subscales and related concepts or mean differences on CINSS subscales between groups. Conclusion The CINSS demonstrates good internal consistency, factorial validity and criterion-related validity in this sample of Canadian students. The measurement of positive mental health among Canadian youth is central to surveillance efforts which will help inform mental health promotion activities across Canada.

Many psychologists collect multitrait-multimethod (MTMM) data to assess the convergent and discriminant validity of psychological measures. In order to choose the most appropriate model, the types of methods applied have to be considered. It is shown how the combination of interchangeable and structurally different raters can be analyzed with an extension of the correlated trait-correlated method minus one [CTC(M−1)] model. This extension allows for disentangling individual rater biases (unique method effects) from shared rater biases (common method effects). The basic ideas of this model are presented and illustrated by an empirical example.

Streszczenie:
A modified transfer matrix method (MTMM) is developed to analyze rotor-bearing systems with an asymmetric shaft and asymmetric disks. The rotating shaft is modeled by a Rayleigh-Euler beam considering the effects of the rotary inertia and gyroscopic moments. Specifically, a transfer matrix of the asymmetric shaft segments is derived in a continuous-system sense to give accurate solutions. The harmonic balance method is incorporated in the transfer matrix equations, so that steady-state responses of synchronous and superharmonic whirls can be determined. A numerical example is presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of this approach.

The main objective of this article is to describe Industry 4.0 and key manufacturing-technology-related technological and business challenges for manufacturing companies. The groups especially interested in the industry 4.0 implementation are operations, technical and production directors responsible for operational excellence of manufacturing plants, strategic development and business continuity. Based on latest Industry 4.0 and manufacturing technology market research, factories located in Poland are less technologically advanced than its counterparts in West European plants. Accordingly, development of the model for assessing the current level of maturity for manufacturing technology related to Industry 4.0 initiative becomes a relevant research task. In the article, key Industry 4.0 related technological areas will be described. Based on the extensive research into international references and industrial consulting experiences in industrial business consulting conducted in Polish manufacturing companies, the manufacturing technology ManuTech Maturity Model (MTMM) concept related to Industry 4.0 will be developed and presented. A substantial and innovative part of the article will be devoted to the adjustment of proposed maturity model to specific features of the Polish industrial and manufacturing sector. This will be relevant due to noticeable differences in the level of technological advancement between Western and Eastern Europe sectors.

Streszczenie:
The objectives in this research were to determine the construct validity of both an adapted self-confidence questionnaire, the Personal Evaluation Inventory (PEI), developed by Shrauger and Schohn, and a Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD) questionnaire, which was adapted from the Taylor Manifest Anxiety Scale. The research was conducted in two girls’ primary schools in Saudi Arabia to collect relevant data on the convergent and discriminant validity of the GAD and PEI questionnaires using the Multi-Trait Multi-Method (MTMM) matrix to prove construct validity. Sixty students and two teachers filled in questionnaires, with each student evaluating themselves and, then, their peers. The teachers evaluated themselves, their self-confidence and generalised degree of their anxiety disorder. The results were that the MTMM analysis supported, to a large extent, both convergent and discriminant validity of the analysed data from students and teachers on two traits (self-confidence and generalised anxiety disorder) and across three methods of measurement (self-reporting, peer-rating and teacher-rating). The results were that the Mono-Trait Mono-Method coefficients were relatively high, and there was relative strength in the Hetero-Trait Mono-Method coefficients. The Hetero-Trait Mono-Method coefficients were reasonable for self-confidence and for the generalised anxiety disorder questionnaires, but teacher-ratings for both traits were unexpected. Furthermore, the Hetero-Trait Hetero-Method coefficients were not constant and showed an unstable variance. In conclusion, the PEI and GAD questionnaires possess acceptable construct validity, but that the teacher-ratings for both the PEI and the GAD questionnaires needed modification in order to attain the desirable construct validity.

Streszczenie:
Objectives: Disorder has been measured by various data sources; however, little attention has been given to comparing the construct validity of different measures obtained through various methods in capturing social disorder and related phenomena. Methods: The multitrait-multimethod approach was used to triangulate the consistency between social disorder, prostitution and drug activity across resident surveys, systematic social observations, and police calls for service data. Results: Prostitution and drug activity showed convergent validity, while there was little evidence that social disorder was consistently measured across the three methods. None of the three social problem measures showed high discriminant validity. Drug activity seems to have highest trait-specific discriminant validity across measures, and prostitution is the most identifiable measure across data sources. Social disorder was found to have low discriminant validity. However, the agreement between databases varies across the type of social problems. Conclusions: Social disorder appears to the most difficult concept to define and measure consistently. The lack of correspondence across data sources cautions against the use of a single source of information in studying disorder. Future studies should explore the factors that shape perceptions of disorder and how to best measure disorder to test the broken windows thesis and related concepts.

Although Objective Personality Tests (OPTs) have a long history in psychology and the field of psychological assessment, their validity, and reliability have not yet been sufficiently studied. In this study, we examined the convergent and discriminant validity of objective (personality) tests, Implicit Association Tests (IATs), and self-report measures for the assessment of conscientiousness and intelligence. Moreover, the convergent and discriminant validity of these measures was assessed on the trait (stable) and occasion specific (momentary) level by using the multimethod latent state-trait (MM-LST) model proposed by Courvoisier, Nussbeck, Eid, and Cole (2008) which allows for the decomposition of different sources of variance. Data from 367 students assessed on three different measurement occasions was incorporated. Results indicate generally low convergence of OPTs with data gained by other approaches. Additional analyses revealed that the OPTs used assess stable rather than momentary components of the constructs. Reliabilities of different tests ranged from .54 to .95. Furthermore, a substantial amount of trait method specificity revealed that different methods assess trait components that are not shared between OPTs and other measures. Data on the criterion validity of the objective conscientiousness test revealed that it is related to the punctuality of test takers in the laboratory.
