In this diploma project the so-called fixed beam moving stage (FBMS) module in the Raith 150 electron beam lithography system has been evaluated for making large area zone plate exposures. The project goal, besides the evaluation of the module, has been to find an exposure recipe for exposing zone plates with diameter up to 500 μm. The zone plates fabricated with this method will be used for synchrotron and x-ray free electron laser applications. The thesis starts with a short introduction to zone plate properties and fabrication procedures. Then the work where FBMS exposed zone plates are compared with normal write field exposures of 75 μm diameter zone plates is described. The conclusion is that for these small diameters, major problems with wobbly zones occur for the FBMS patterns. However, for larger diameters the pattern typically looks better. The final result with large area exposures are excellent zone plate patterns with 500 μm diameter and 100 nm outermost zone width. The total exposure time was 2 h 15 min. This relatively short time indicate that it will be practically possible to use the Raith system for these large area exposures.

This thesis deals with a theoretical and an experimental exploration of squeeze film levitation (SFL) of light objects. The investigations aimed to find the important design parameters controlling this levitation mechanism and also to suggest an alternative way to implement SFL. The study, through computer modelling and experimental validation, focused on Poisson's contraction effect for generating SFL. A finite element model (ANSYS) was verified by experimental testing of five different plate designs. Each plate was subjected to a uniaxial plain stress by an arrangement of two hard piezoelectric actuators (PZT) bonded to the bottom of the plate and driven with DC or AC voltages. It was observed that pulsation of a dimple or crest shaped elastic deformation along the longitudinal axis in the central area of the plate was created because of Poisson's contraction. This Poisson's effect generated the squeeze-film between the plate and the levitated object. The separation distance between a floating lightweight object and the plate was analysed using computational fluid dynamics (ANSYS CFX) through creation of a modelling model for the air-film entrapped between the two interacting surfaces - a typical three-dimensional fluid-solid interaction system (FSI). Additionally, the levitation distance has been experimentally measured by a Laser Sensor. A satisfactory agreement has been found between model predictions and experimental results. Two levitation systems, one based on a horn transducer (Langevin type) and the other one in the form of a plain rectangular plate made of Aluminium and firmly fastened at both ends with a surface-mounted piezoelectric actuator, were compared in this thesis. Both devices were based on SFL mechanism. Evidently, the performances of both designs were greatly influenced by the design structure and in particular by the driving plate characteristics such as plate size and geometry as well as the driving boundary conditions. To this end, physical experiments were carried out and it was found that the device utilising horn-type transducer yields better levitation performance. Ultimately, the research explained the confusion between three approaches to non-contact levitation through literature review and also pointed out some essential parameters like piezoelectric actuators location, material of the driving structure, coupled-field between the actuators and the driving structure and the fluid-solid interface that was existed between the excited plate and the levitated object.

The use and control of water jet impingement in the run-out table (ROT) are crucial in the steel plate cooling phase. Because of the complexity of the involved heat transfer process, the industries still mostly rely on a trial-and-error method for controlling the ROT cooling process. Although there are some experimental and numerical studies of the jet impingement cooling on ROT, the process is not fully understood. The analysis of hydrodynamics of water jet impingement is a key to understanding the process better. This aspect has received little attention in literature and it is the objective of this research. At first, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) axisymmetric simulation of water jet was considered to explore wetting front propagation on stationary surface. In the case of a moving plate, there are different zones over the plate surface and appropriate three-dimensional geometry and model must be built in order to have a complete analysis and realistic outcomes. Nine cases (namely three distinct jet flow rates of 15, 22, and 30 L/min impinging on different plate speeds of 0.6, 1.0, and 1.5 m/s) were numerically investigated. Two main regions were carefully inspected; the propagations of water fronts in wetting zones and the interactions of wall jets in interaction zones. The realizable k-ε turbulent model (RKE) was utilized with the aid of a non-equilibrium wall function treatment and it showed good performance. The numerical results were validated with the experimental data obtained by other members of the UBC ROT group and showed reasonable agreement in terms of wetting front spreading and wall jets interaction type. Higher plate speeds and/or lower jet flow rates require dense mesh near the target surface to avoid water flow intermittency and capture the wetting front propagation as well as the hydraulic jump configuration. A huge air backflow was depicted when the plate was at the highest speed. Due to the plate movement, the symmetric wetting zone was distorted and became noncircular. According to the flow rate amount and the plate speed, different water wall jet interaction type and a corresponding bulge of water ahead of interaction zone (Int-Z) were captured.

Experiments have been carried out on a pilot scale run-out table to study heat transfer during cooling of hot moving steel plates. Two lines of top water jets, each holding three nozzles are used in the study. Emphasis has been placed on studying the effect of nozzle stagger, jet line spacing and plate speed on the overall heat extraction rate. Tests are performed for 3 nozzle stagger arrangements (no-, half- and full-stagger) jet line spacings (25.4 cm, and 50.8 cm) and 2 plate speeds (0.35 m/s and 1.0 mIs) Results show that similar heat extraction rates are obtained regardless of nozzle stagger, for as long as the distance between nozzles and jet lines are held the same. However, cooling is more uniform when the nozzles are fully-staggered. No significant pooling occurred in between jet lines to affect cooling efficiency of the second jet line. More efficient heat extraction is attained when using closer-spaced jet lines and slower plate speeds. The heat extraction capability of an individual nozzle is generally determined by the surface temperature of the to-be-impinged and surrounding areas of the steel plate to be cooled. Nozzle arrangements of subsequent jet lines with respect to hot and cold regions developed by prior jet line impingement is crucial in maintaining uniform and efficient cooling of the hot plate or strip.

Accurate forecasting is a real problem at many companies and that includes Alfa Laval in Lund. Alfa Laval experiences problems forecasting for future raw material demand. Management is aware that the forecasting methods used today can be improved or replaced by others. A change could lead to better forecasting accuracy and lower errors which means less inventory, shorter cycle times and better customer service at lower costs.

The purpose of this study is to analyze Alfa Laval’s current forecasting models for demand of raw material used for pressed plates, and then determine if other models are better suited for taking into consideration trends and seasonal variation.

This research project physically and theoretically investigates a relationship between body and place, via site-specific performance-making processes in diverse Australian sites. It encompasses the creation of two live performances and a video installation, the development of which are documented and elucidated in a written exegesis. The exegesis and associated performance processes explore the proposition that movement/ dance—as a spatial practice—can be a mode of locating, or an attempt to locate. ‘Locating’ implies an endless process that is always heading towards location, place, total presence—but may never arrive. Using practice-based, embodied research as its methodology, environmental information from the specific site is gathered via sensory perception tasks, some derived from Body Weather (a movement philosophy developed by Japanese dancer Min Tanaka), generating an improvisational exchange of perception and response. This ‘locating dance’ is the relationship between body and the place: it is simultaneously the seeking of relationship and the expression, enactment or illustration of it. In seeking location in relation to Australian sites from the perspective of a body that is white, the research also interrogates white Australian identity in relationship to this country, with the knowledge of the genocide and dispossession that its history entails. The work of theorists of place and space, as well as local historical and ecological sources, provide the framework for this series of excavations. Via traveling in Europe and to Aboriginal Land in the Northern Territory, insights develop into the cultural and corporeal residue of colonisation. Thus, the specific geographical site of each of the performance works acts also as a microcosm for, or reference point to, the broader site of contemporary Australia and the non-Aboriginal postcolonial experience of place. Representation of the body in performance is constructed in various ways to acknowledge the implications of its whiteness. The locating dances and performance works that comprise Locating: Place and the Moving Body engage in a multi-sensory listening to the country that aspires towards (white Australian) location—that elusive and longed-for ‘belonging’ or true ‘settlement’—yet they do not purport to have found, or even anticipate finding, an endpoint to this dance.

Grid cells produce a periodic hexagonal array of firing fields when the rat navigates on a horizontal 2D surface, and such regularity supports the hypothesis that they encode distances covered by the animal. This computation is thought to form the neural basis for path integration, and the medial entorhinal cortex (MEC), where grid cells are mostly found, is now believed to play a major role for the establishment of a cognitive map in the brain. However, while grid cells on the horizontal plane are invariant across different environments (they provide fixed spatial metrics), it is currently not known whether those distances vary in 3D space. Previous findings suggested that grid cells may be substantially incapable to perform path integration in the vertical plane and this thesis aimed to test a number of hypothesis to explain such an impairment. These results show that grid cells are not affected by experience with 3D locomotion; they are modulated by the orientation of the locomotion plane and on a climbing wall they display heavily distorted firing patterns with expanded but fewer fields. Based on these findings, the hypothesis that the inconsistency between horizontal and vertical maps may be due to the miscomputation of instantaneous speed was suggested. Preliminary results support the view that the speed signal carried by speed cells (single-unit level) and LFP theta oscillation (large ensembles) was substantially reduced suggesting an underestimation of speed during climbing. Put together these results support the hypothesis that the speed signal plays a crucial role for the generation of a regular grid. In the vertical dimension the speed signal is reduced and such impairment drives grid cells to expand and become more irregular. Overall these results demonstrate that the neural representation of space is therefore not symmetrical across dimensions but is instead anisotropic.

Small-signal moving-coil loudspeaker driver parameters are traditionally derived through electrical impedance measurement techniques. These parameters are commonly called Thiele/Small parameters, after Neville Thiele and Richard Small who are credited with developing industry-standard loudspeaker modeling techniques. However, because loudspeaker drivers are electro-mechano-acoustical transducers, it should be possible to measure their parameters in physical domains other than the electrical domain. A method of measuring loudspeaker parameters from the acoustical domain will be developed. The technique uses a plane wave tube to measure acoustical properties of a baffled driver under test. Quantities such as the transmission loss through the driver are measured for a driver placed in the tube using the two-microphone transfer-function technique. Models have been developed to curve fit the resulting data, from which small-signal loudspeaker parameters are subsequently derived. This thesis discusses the acoustical measurement theory, apparatus, and system modeling methods (via equivalent circuits). It also compares measured parameters to those derived using electrical techniques. Parameters derived from both approaches are compared with reference values to establish bias errors. Sequential measurements are also compared to reveal random errors in the derivation processes.

This practice-led thesis primarily investigates space, place and site through experiencing moving image installation art practice, focusing on ways in which artists use site as moving image subject. Integral to this examination is my own work, exploring specific sites through filming, editing and installation. By purposeful experimentation, visual finding and discoveries, questions emerging from practice are raised, and are examined through practice and mutual engagement with other contemporary art works. An experiential and comparative approach has led to critical engagement of strategies and tactics used by contemporary artists, shown in the U.K. between 2002 and 2009, including Willie Doherty, Ori Gersht, Ergin Çavuşoğlu, Matt White and Lucy Gunning. I also draw upon selected works from moving image’s history, through which further commonalities are made apparent, examining works by Robert Smithson, Andy Warhol, Margaret Tait, William Raban and Tacita Dean (among others). The works are investigated through first hand experience, through visual analysis including artist and gallerist interviews, and through articulating the making of my own installations. Space, place and site are critically examined through encountering the projected image, acknowledging that while the works experienced possess powerful imagery, their impact extends beyond purely aesthetic definitions. This written component engages with the event of the artwork as a mode of being that occurs in the interval between the viewer and the observed subject. Relevant theoretical approaches are used to consider the works drawing on a broad base of literature, including: Edward Soja, Doris von Drathan and Irit Rogoff in order to investigate the central concepts. The discursive account interrogates a complex terrain, opening out apperceptive approaches made in terms of filming, editing and installation, constructing a vibrant and reciprocal research field; one that suggests that there exists a collective field of work, which until now has lain submerged in the broader picture of moving image installation. It emerges here for the first time as a (selected) focused view of a significant body of site oriented moving image installations, thus serving as a context for approaches made in my own art practice.

Rural place is often overlooked in interaction design research. This thesis is centered around an analog interaction between humans and a 35 ton stone in a danish forest, on the rural island of Bornholm. With a methodological approach influenced by Donna Haraway's essay 'Situated Knowledges' the author approaches her site-specific topic both as a local, a tourist and a researcher. The thesis offers a close study of the interaction with the stone, and explains how this natural occurring interaction, has physically shaped the landscape around it, but also reveals the curation imposed upon rural place and and how this curation affects our sense of place. The researcher suggests that counter-curations can be used as a method for site-specific interaction designers, and exemplifies this by curating a natural site as well as a rural village site. The stone in the forest opens up for a project about the multiple identities of rural place and how theses are shaped in deep intertwining and tension between the past and present, human and nature.

The asymptotic behaviour of an elastically supported infinite string and an elastic isotropic half plane (in frames of specific asymptotic model) under a moving point load are studied. The main results of this work are uniform asymptotic formulae and the asymptotic profile for the string and the exact solution and uniform asymptotic formulae for a half plane. The crucial assumption for both structures is that the acceleration is sufficiently small. In order to describe asymptotically the oscillations of an infinite string auxiliary canonical functions are introduced, asymptotically analyzed and tabulated. Using these functions uniform asymptotic formulae for the string under constant accelerating and decelerating point loads are obtained. Approximate formulae for the displacement in the vicinity of the point load and the singularity area behind the shock wave using the steady speed asymptotic expansion with additional contributions from stationary points where appropriate are derived. It is shown how to generalise uniform asymptotic results to the arbitrary acceleration case. As an example these results are applied for the case of sinusoidal load speed. It is shown that the canonical functions can successfully be used in the arbitrary acceleration case as well. The graphical comparative analysis of numerical solu- tion and approximations is provided for different moving load speed intervals and values of the parameters. Vibrations of an elastic half plane are studied within the framework of the asymp- totic model suggested by J. Kaplunov et al. in 2006. Boundary conditions for the main problem are obtained as a solution for the problem of a string on the surface of a half plane subject to uniformly accelerated moving load. The exact solution over the interior of the half plane is derived with respect to boundary conditions. Steady speed and Rayleigh wave speed asymptotic expansions are obtained. In the neighborhood of the Rayleigh speed the uniform asymptotic formulae are derived. Some of their interesting properties are discovered and briefly studied. The graphical comparative analysis of the exact solution and approximations is provided for different moving load speed intervals and values of the parameters.

This research considers the production and presentation of 3-D CGI animation where the intention is to explore the potential of this mode of practice as material. Through a practical and theoretical study, this research project outlines the proposal that within the context of 3-D CGI animation there exists a property that can be regarded as unique, or deemed as an essential quality, which in turn can be defined as material. The research refers directly to work developed by Structural/Materialist filmmakers and artists working in the 1960s and 1970s whose investigation into process and materiality acts as a method and potential framework for exploringapproaches and processes within 3-D CGI animation. The project asks the following questions: 1. Is it possible through a practical exploration to establish distinctiveness for 3-D CGI animation? 2. Can theoretical research in relation to media studies, film studies, specifically Structural/Materialist film assist to support and shape project development? 3. Can the practical work associated with the project and theoretical undertaking converge to support a basis for determining an individual characteristic for 3-D CGI animation? Hypothesis My hypothesis in relation to the expected findings and outcomes for the project can be distilled to form two strands: 1. That 3-D CGI is definable as a unique mode of production and can be classified as distinct from other digital modes of image production. That the result of the research will point towards a conceptualisation for 3-D CGI where as a process it has the capacity and the influence to be considered as a unique, discreet mode of production. That the qualities and the self-styled artefacts that emerge from the digital mass can be determined as definable products linked to a specific process.

The results of spatial data analyses can be substantially affected by the spatial configuration of the sites where measurements are taken. Hence, optimal designs which result in data guaranteeing efficient statistical inferences need to be studied. We study optimal designs on two large classes of spatial regions with respect to three design criteria, which were prediction, covariance parameter estimation, and empirical prediction. The first class of regions includes those in the plane, where Euclidean distance is used. The performance of the optimal designs is compared to that of randomly chosen designs. Optimal designs for a small example and a relatively large example are obtained. For the small example, complete enumeration of all possible designs is computationally feasible. For the large example, the computational difficulty in searching for the optimal spatial sampling design is overcome by a simulated annealing algorithm. The second class of spatial regions includes streams and rivers, where the distance is defined as distance along the stream network. A moving average construction is used to establish valid covariance and cross-covariance models using stream distance. Optimal designs for small and large examples are obtained. An application of our methodology to a real stream network is included. We discuss the impact of asymmetry in the cross covariance function on the spatial multivariate design. The relationship between multivariate optimal design and univariate optimal design if the multivariate design is restricted to be completely collocated is studied. The efficiency lost if we consider the design that is optimal within the class of collocated designs is discussed.

Identity is often theorised in Cultural Studies, but is less frequently contextualised and historicised. Much can be gained from examining identity formations through the micro-history of place. I have utilised the concept of Moving Nations to examine the formation of the Indonesian Christian Church (ICC) in Applecross, Western Australia. The term Moving Nations encompasses three key concepts. Firstly, the phrase denotes migration from one nation to another. Secondly, it encompasses the idea of moving a nation from one place to another, sometimes described as a migrant diaspora. Thirdly, the concept reveals the flexible, changeable and esoteric nature of national boundaries. Each of these notions impact upon, and frequently displace, the Subject. How do people negotiate the problem of Moving Nations? By probing the experiences of a specific community, and by drawing on my own experience in both migrating and living as a foreign national in another land, I have been able to investigate the questions posed through Moving Nations. I am indebted to ICC for the insight into migrant and diasporic politics. Defined both by nation and religion, discussion of ICC resonates with questions of identity. My own migration from England to Australia, and the year I spent studying in Indonesia during 1995-1996, also bring into play issues of Australian national identity and Whiteness. Pieced together, these elements form an image of Moving Nations, the microcosms which together create our post-modem society.

Coherent plane-wave compounding is the coherent summation of several successive plane waves incident at different angles. This thesis presents results from simulations and in vitro and in vivo measurements of stationary and moving objects, with focus on loss of resolution and contrast due to object motion. Resolution and contrast results for several angle selections, angle sequences and object velocities with and without motion correction have been compared.It is shown that using a subset of plane-wave tilt angles by decimating the optimal selection introduces grating lobes which degrades the image contrast, while imaging with a lower maximum tilt angle degrades the lateral resolution. The contrast loss for decimation factor 2 was more significant for simulations than for in vitro measurements. While the contrast went from -40 to -30 dB for the simulations, a decimation factor of 4 was needed to degrade the contrast significantly for the measurements. Decimating the angle selection by a factor of 2 doubles the achievable frame rate. A reduction in maximum angle from 13.7 to 8.2 deg., which corresponds to an increase in transmit F-number from 2.1 to 3.5, gives less than 0.3 mm degradation of lateral resolution. The lateral resolution is of the order of 1 mm. This reduction in maximum angle increases the frame rate by a factor of 1.2.Axial point scatterer velocity leads to considerably worse image quality than for stationary scatterers, while the effect of lateral scatterer velocities is limited. The degree of contrast and resolution loss due to object motion is dependent on the selection of plane waves which constitute a frame, and the sequence in which the plane waves are transmitted. Using a subset of the optimal angle selection leads to improvement in image quality for an axial velocity of 10.0 cm/s for decimation factor 4, but not for decimation factor 2, even though the total scatterer movement per frame is reduced by the reduction of transmitted plane-waves. The loss of quality due to motion was less for fewer tilt angles, but the total image quality was still worse for many of these sets of angles due to grating lobes.The unwanted effects of motion for in vivo-measurements were not seen to the same extent as for simulated point scatterers, and working with the coherent plane-wave compound seems promising for moving objects.

The study of rectangular cantilever plates with step discontinuities in properties is of interest in many areas of industry. Cantilever plates are assigned different properties to represent change in stiffness and mass creating therefore the concept of step discontinuities in properties. The step discontinuity in properties is best represented by dividing the cantilever plate into separate segments called spans, with each span having its own stiffness and/or mass distribution as one moves outwards from the clamped edge. This thesis presents the concept of dividing the cantilever plate into spans and provides accurate analytical solutions for free vibration frequencies and mode shapes. Chapter 1 introduces the reader to the theory of rectangular plates while chapter 2 concentrates on introducing the general solutions as applied to rectangular plates. Although there is no limit to the number of plate spans to be studied, three and four span cantilever plates were analysed in chapter 3. The computed eigenvalues are validated against previously published uniform rectangular cantilever plate free vibration results. They were found converging to the known values. Free vibration eigenvalues and mode shapes are then calculated for a variety of cantilever plates of different aspect ratios and with different span thicknesses creating a discontinuity in mass and flexural rigidity along the plate. The results are presented in chapter 4 and discussed in chapter 5.

The overall purpose of this licentiate thesis is to explore how different media is considered and valued by teachers in an interdisciplinary project in which the subjects of Art and Swedish are included. In the project, The Horror Genre in Literature and Film, a variety of mediations are represented: speech, writing, still- and moving images. The study focuses on the teaching strategies and approaches that participating teachers have in relation to the project's various mediations. My central concern is how the media of moving images is considered in the project. Of particular interest for my study is the question if teachers takes into account the media's special possibilities and limitations in their teaching. The theoretical framework is sociocultural theory, narrative theory and theories from the field of media and multimodality. The study was conducted in a Swedish primary school where three classes in 8th grade participated. The empirical material consists of interviews with three teachers in the subject Swedish and with one Art teacher. Also part of the empirical material, are the films produced by the pupils in the project. These films were analysed with the purpose of identifying to what degree the pupils used a narrative that is particular to the medium of moving image. The project in my study was carried out as an interdisciplinary project. Nonetheless, the results show that the teachers in the various subjects work toward the goals set in their own school subjects and that no common goals or overall objectives were formulated in the project. My study also shows that the mediations that are rewarded and have a superior role in the project are the spoken and the written word. The media of moving images has a marginalised place in the project and is regarded as less important. The main result of my study shows the problems that may arise when different forms of mediation co-exist in project-based learning within a school context. It also points out the difficulties that interdisciplinary projects have to face in terms of national regulations, frame factors such as the distribution of lesson hours, resources, as well as other factors that can affect the possibility of cooperation between the subjects.

Currently the license plate recognition technology has been widely used in daily life. It mainly detects the license plate characters by computer vision technology and identifies license plate characters. The object of license plate recognition is usually stationary vehicles, a few are for the recognition of moving vehicles, and its application is subject to a certain degree of restrictions. Motorcycle stability is far less than that of vehicles when moving, resulting in a more unfixed motorcycle license plate's sight angle when moving. Therefore, motorcycle license plates are more difficult to identify than vehicle license plates. This study designed a license plate recognition system for a moving motorcycle. The system can be divided into three stages: The first stage of license plate detection In order to extract the license plate location in the image. The second phase license plate calibration is to deal with the moving license plate has not fixed tilt angle, as well as different location size and other issues. The third stage of character recognition is to extract the license plate characters, and the characters accurately identified. In order to achieve high accuracy and stability of the system, Euresys Open eVision, a computer vision library for industrial applications, was introduced to realize system functions. At present, the accuracy of system identification reaches above 95.5% with an average identification time of 47.62 ms, which achieves the purpose of identifying motorcycle license plates in progress.

License plate recognition systems have been developed for many years. Most of them are installed with video cameras at fixed locations such as highway toll stations or parking lots. However, very few studies have focused on license plate recognition system with moving camera. In Taiwan, the density of vehicles is ranked top in the world. Taiwan is also known as the highest motorcycle-density country in the world. Presently the police investigating stolen vehicles use system by manually entering license plate numbers to check if they are stolen vehicles or not. In this thesis, we develop a plate license automatic recognition system with moving cameras. This allows polices to record the car or motor-cycle plate numbers while patrolling in their cars. This system comprises the following modules: image pre-processing, license plate localization, plates processing, and optical character recognition. First, pre-processing module is used to converts color input video into 8-bits grayscale images. Next, license plate localization module uses Sobel edge detection operator to find strong vertical texture and locates the license plate area in images. Then, the plate-processing module uses adaptive threshold processing to get more accurate area of license plate. In this module, if the license plate characters are white, they will be transformed into black characters. Finally, optical character recognition module is used to recognize the character. We have adapted the Tesseract-OCR engine to do the task. We use captured plate charter templates to train its characters database and get good recognition result.. Experimental results show that our system has 98.61% successful license plate areas localization rate. It achieves 90.52% successful license plate recognition.

License plate recognition system is widely used in the present time, but most of the previous researches emphasized on static system. In this thesis, a license plate location and recognition method is proposed to shoot the motion-based vehicle by the video camera set up in KUAS’s entrances and exits. As a result of the video camera was set up in outdoor environment, therefore rainy environment will impact on the system. Hence this thesis will propose a license plate recognition method for moving vehicles applied in both environments. The principle of license plate recognition is utilizing gradient analysis and the license plate location method of this thesis proposed to find out the precise position of the license plate. Then, the located license plate must pass through boundary re-adjusting、character segmentation and character recognition with template matching to finish the license plate recognition system. In general environment, the result shows the accuracy of license plate location is 91.51%, and the accuracy of license plate recognition is 84.54%. In rainy environment, the accuracy of license plate location is 90.59%, the accuracy of license plate recognition is 81.81%. The processing time of this system needs only 40~60mS, and conforms to the requirement of real-time system.

This study presents the vibration analysis of piezoelectric Mindlin plate under moving load. The host plate is aluminum and the bottom surface bonded with a piezoelectric plate. The governing equations and boundary conditions of the entire system are derived from performing Hamilton’s principle. The finite element method is adopted to analyze the behavior of the entire plate. The shape functions of one element are constructed from solving the equations of static equilibrium. Newmark’s Integration Method is adopted to analyze the plate’s dynamic response. The effects of thickness and area of the piezoelectric layer on the displacement at the center of the plate and the etymology of electricity on the bottom piezoelectric layer are investigated.

In this thesis, the license plate locating automatically system is researched and implemented on complex background image. The technology of moving vehicular license plate locating (MVLPL) and license plate recognition (LPR) for vehicular will integrate into the vehicular locating and monitoring (VLM) system. The VLM system is active and can be employed on the intelligent surveillance system for the running vehicle. In the moving object tracking system, four steps are employed. At first, the pre-processing on the input image is performed. Secondly, the vertical and horizontal projection of the image is accumulated. Thirdly, the image difference is completed. The simple algorithm is employed to detect the edge of moving objects obviously. Finally, using the mixing algorithm to demarcate boundaries of moving objects. The results of the experiments show that the performance of the moving objects tracking rate is 97.2%. In the license plate location system, because of the vehicular image have black and white characteristics focus on the license plate. We bring new algorithm like 3x3 blocks algorithm、crossing analysis、density analysis、project division and else. The results of the experiments show that the performance of the moving license plate locating rate is 91.4%. So the system could combine all of the monitoring systems on road and detect the license plate of running vehicular.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the dynamic response of a piezoelectric sandwich Mindlin Plate. The upper and lower layers of the sandwich plate structure are aluminum alloy plates with piezoelectric material (PZT-5H) in the middle. The stresses and strains of the structure in this paper are calculated via the Mindlin plate theory. The kinetic energy and strain energy are derived by stress and strain. The governing equations of the piezoelectric sandwich plate are derived by Performing Hamilton's Principle. The modal frequencies of the piezoelectric composite plate are obtained by analytic method. Applying a concentrated moving load on the structure obtain the displacement of the plate and the voltage on the piezoelectric layer. The velocity effect on the displacement and voltage is investigated in the thesis.

In this paper, we propose an embedded system for vehicle license plates localization of moving vehicles from a video image sequence taken by USB CMOS sensor. The system uses ARM XScale PXA270 as the hardware development platform, uses Linux as the operation system and kernel edition is 2.6. The proposed algorithm is a hybrid scheme; it utilizes self-adaptive updating of background, morphology, color transformation, adumbration transformation, and pixel density calculating method to locate the license plates of moving vehicles. Finally, the extracted license plates are displayed on a TFT-LCD. The proposed system’s physical size is smaller than other previous systems, and can work well in difficult the places not readily accessible by personnel such as wire poles or bottom of cross-over bridge. On the other hand, it improves the portability of the system such that it can be installed on the police patrol cars to do a dynamic localization for vehicle license plate.

The license plate recognition system has been developed for years. Although many results have been reported, most of the results are on the fixed-point photography, which means that the monitors are set fixedly at the entrance of parking area or on the crossroads. The license plate recognition system based on fixed-point photography is unable to adjust itself with the change of the surroundings promptly. Instead, the monitor of the license plate recognition system equipped with a movable camera has to turn continuously and adjust with the change of the surroundings. Thus, the license plate recognition system based on movable photography is worth of being studied. This research provides a real-time license plate recognition system which can be applied on the moving vehicles to overcome the difficulties mentioned above. The process of the recognition includes license plate locations, character segmentation and character recognition. In this study, the camera were installed on a moving car to capture images outside the car and once a license plate appeared, the system detected and processed license plate locations, character segmentation and character recognition. To overcome the changes of surrounding shadow, the gray scale average in a region was taken as the binarization threshold through the way of local threshold. The license plate locations and character segmentation are processed using two-stage connected component labeling. Finally, the character recognition is done by pattern matching. This study indeed provides a system which not only can do license plate recognition on a moving car but also can recognize the license plate of a static car through a hand-held camera. This system saves the trouble spent on keying the number of the license plate, makes the investigations of the stolen vehicles more efficient and further decrease the crime rate.

Recently, due to the development and progress of science and technology, more and more motorcycle, automobile, and transportation increase in every year. So, Therefore, a large number of researches are presented. The Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) is one of the best ways to solve the traffic problem. An ITS combines telecommunications, electronics, computer application, control and sensor technologies to improve traffic safety and efficiency. In this thesis, a License plate location method is proposed to shoot the motion-based vehicle by the video camera in KUAS’s entrances and exits. And, The motion detection, vehicle location, and objection segmentation are used to grab the license plate mask. By analyzing the mask of the license plate and their minimal boundary boxes, the meaningful and obvious features of license plate are extracted. The experiment results show that the accuracy is about 90%, and this method can conform the requirement of real-tome system.

This paper presents the theory of moving spring-damper-mass element which consists of a lumped mass , a roller mass , a spring and a damper , so that the inertia, spring and damping effects between the moving subsystem and the plate can be easily taken into account the dynamic responses of the entire vibrating system. In which, the element property matrices of the moving spring-damper-mass (SDM) element are determined based on the dynamic equilibrium equations of the plate and the moving SDM system. Since the last matrices have something to do with the position of the moving SDM system on the plate, they are time-dependent. For this reason, the overall property matrices of the entire vibrating system change from time to time. Some important factors, such as moving speed, spring constants, lumped mass and total number of the SDM system, closely relating to the title problem are studied. Numerical results show that the last parameters significantly influence the dynamic responses of either the moving SDM system or the plate.

The research focus on the development of the evaluation methodology and experiment of thermal cutting processes with moving heat source on a flat work piece. The study adopting APDL tool to develop several thermal cutting processes model with different critical fabrication parameters and creative operation methods which are successfully linking to ANSYS finite element analysis software. For advanced applications, brittle and polynomial thin plat materials are chosen as two major demonstrated focuses in the study. For brittle case, such as glass, silicon etc., the enhanced stress concentration effect is the key topic. For example the study proposes the dual heat sources concepts with heat source followed by a cool source in a optimal distance. For another one, such as plastic thin plate cutting process, the cutting quality and the relative operation parameters are the study objects. The image processing based micro stress detection methodology and experiments are planted and implemented for verifying the correctness of the previous qualitative/quantitative simulation prediction. The study proposed innovative simulation model for thin plat cutting have been verified by micro stress detection experiments. Several critical values of operation parameters and processes have also been discovered. The results of the study are practical and useful for academic and industry applications.

This paper presents the theory of moving four-degree-of-freedom spring-damper-mass element which consists of a lumped mass , two roller masses ( ), two springs ( ) and two dampers ( ), so that the rotary inertia effects, translational inertia effects, spring effects and damping effects of the moving load, can be taken into account. The element property matrices of the last element are derived based on the dynamic equilibrium equations of the moving spring-damper-mass (SDM) system. Since the interaction effects between the moving SDM system and the supported rectangular plate are considered, by means of shape functions, in the last matrices, the latter are time-dependent and so are the overall property matrices of the entire vibrating system. Newmark direct integration method is used to solve the equations of motion and determine the dynamic responses of the whole structure. Some factors, such as moving speed of moving SDM system, spring constants and the position for centre of gravity of lumped mass of the SDM system, closely relating to the title problem are investigated. Numerical results show that the influences of the foregoing parameters on the dynamic responses of either the moving subsystem or the supported structure are significant.
