Streszczenie:
Since the 1970s, feminist scholars have undertaken important critical work on Australian women’s writing of earlier eras, profiling and promoting their fiction. Less attention has been afforded to the popular non-fiction produced by Australian women writers and, in particular, to that produced before the Second World War. Yet this writing is important for several reasons. First, the non-fiction writing of Australian women was voluminous and popular with readers. Second, this popular work critically engaged with a tumultuous political, social and moral landscape in which, as women’s rights were increasingly realized through legislation, the subjectivity of women themselves was fluid and contested. Third, as many of these women were also, or principally, fiction writers, their non-fiction can be shown to have informed and influenced many of their fictional interests, themes and characters. Lastly, and critically, popular non-fiction publication helped to financially sustain many of these writers. In proposing a conceptual framework informed by the work of Pierre Bourdieu to analyse examples of this body of work, this article not only suggests that important connections exist between popular and mainstream non-fiction works – newspaper and magazine articles, essays, pamphlets and speeches – and the fictional publications of Australian women writers of the early twentieth century but also suggests that these connections may represent an Australian literary habitus where writing across genre, form and audience was a professional approach that built and sustained literary careers.

Reading motivation has been extensively studied in online reading settings. However, little is known about what makes people want to read fiction online, especially in a foreign-language setting. As part of the growth of digital literature and cybernetics, online fiction is gaining popularity among young Indonesians. This research sought to explore Indonesian student-readers’ motivations and preferences as they practiced and were engaged in reading online stories in English. One hundred twelve university students responded to a survey, and 14 were randomly selected for in-depth interviews to learn more about their reading motivations, preferences, and cybernetic literary practices. Analysis of data from the survey showed that most participants chose Wattpad and Webtoon as their favorite online platforms, with romance and fantasy as their favorite genres. They devoted many hours to reading novels on these platforms to seek enjoyment and improve their English vocabulary and language. Nevertheless, data from the interviews further revealed that readers read solely to seek enjoyment and pleasure. Also, readers were primarily silent, unwilling to participate in online conversations between readers and reader-authors but actively rating the novels after reading. Findings contribute to establishing views on online reading motivation and cybernetic literary practices for EFL fiction readers; reading for pleasure is the intrinsic motivation that triggers Indonesian university student-readers to stay online on the platform.

The field of crime fiction in Nigeria remains under-explored in scholarly discourse. This lacuna is particularly notable given the absence of comprehensive academic works dedicated to this genre. Crime fiction, which delineates narratives surrounding criminals, their crimes, detection and investigation processes, and underlying motivations, has been a prolific subject in Nigerian creative literature. Despite the substantial body of Nigerian literary works delving into themes of crime, punishment, and motivation, it is intriguing that the genre has not garnered significant critical analysis. This study adopts a diachronic approach to trace the historical evolution of crime fiction in Nigeria. It further investigates various sub-genres within this literary category and examines how a multitude of socio-political dynamics have influenced the thematic focus of Nigerian crime fiction. The study posits that crime fiction is gaining relevance in contemporary Nigerian society. It reveals that a significant corpus of these narratives grapple with issues such as colonialism, militarism, corruption, government apathy towards human and national development, and other opaque political and economic elements that perpetuate Nigeria’s precarious journey towards democratic stability.

As Children’s Laureate 2013–2015, Malorie Blackman raised awareness of the lack of racial diversity in children’s fiction. Underrepresentation of ethnic minorities in fiction and the publishing industry’s infrastructure is a severe problem in the world of children’s books, as illuminated by research into the publishing environment of the past 15 years, and the books populating current bestseller charts. Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of economic and symbolic capital is important to understanding how diversity is highlighted in the contemporary literary field, but his polarization of the different form of capital as motivation for creating art is reductive. Storytelling is about combining voices and experiences, and publishers can, and should, combine economic and symbolic motivations in publishing diverse fiction for children. Publishing a book because it will be successful economically and because it is the right thing to do are not mutually exclusive; in publishing diverse children’s fiction, both motives can and should inspire us.

Serial killers fascinate people and books, films, TV series and other types of entertainment increasingly cater to this interest providing sensationalized media coverage. The theory suggests that the boundaries are blurred considerably between fact and fiction, even for the serial killers themselves. For many people, serial killers are both frightening and attractive enough to motivate them to go on tours and visit sites, museums and other attractions that are associated with them. This paper explores the motivation for consuming true and fictional crime including murders and serial killing with an emphasis on literature, films, TV series as well as tourism. A content analysis of the websites of walking tours, museums and other attractions connected to fictional and real serial killers was undertaken, as well as a questionnaire with a niche sample of respondents who commented on their experience and perceptions of serial killers within a dark tourism context. The results suggest that while tourists tend to prefer real serial killers to fictional ones, only a small number of tourists actually engage in this form of dark tourism. Their motivations tend to be more connected to education or entertainment rather than a morbid obsession with death or tragedy.

P.D. James is a well - known author of both crime and mysteries who is recognized with enlarging the mystery subgenre. Even though she uses aspects of traditional detective fiction, James is particularly concerned in establishing the psychological motivations of her characters. James is renowned for her sophisticated written style, which is accentuated by literary allusions and quotations, as well as for the vivid, realistic characters and locations she creates. Writing detective fiction is one of James's passions and she strives to use the techniques that make "serious fiction" gratifying while still adhering to the genre's rules. She was interested in realism as early as her writings show. Her literary style is distinct from the classic "country house mystery" of conventional British detective fiction, in which static characters exist solely to further the plot of the mystery. Despite being constructed in the traditional "whodunnit" way, these novels rely on developed, convincing characterizations.

Through their work as instructors in a master of library science program, the authors observed a sharp increase in students’ desire to adopt the reader-interest classification approach of genrefication for their school libraries’ fiction collections. In order to better understand this trend, the researchers interviewed seven school librarians regarding their motivations for genrefying their libraries’ fiction collections; the challenges they encountered during or after the genrefication process; and any benefits they perceived as having resulted in the implementation of genrefication. The data suggest that the librarians’ interests in genrefication stem mostly from the lack of time they have to help individual students find materials, and the lack of time students are given out of the instructional day to explore the libraries’ fiction collections. The participants felt that reclassifying the library’s fiction collection by genre gave students more ownership of the fiction collection and allowed them to find materials that genuinely interested them. The significant challenges the librarians faced in the reorganization process speak to challenges regarding the ways in which librarians attempt to provide access to diverse materials for all patrons.

Abstract: This article analyses the ethically suspect processes of identification and empathy mobilized by Miguel Dalmau's 2009 work of perpetrator fiction, La noche del Diablo . It draws on narratological perspectives on character identification and narrative empathy and on philosophical discussions on the necessity of attempting to comprehend the motivations of those who commit evil acts. Informed by these narratological and philosophical insights, the article argues that perpetrator fiction about the Spanish Civil War is a psychologically useful tool for expanding our understanding of how individuals commit atrocities and for enhancing our awareness of ourselves as potential agents of perpetration.

This qualitative case study explores writing and writing motivations of senior citizens age 65-93 who had entered a public library Writing Challenge. The research questions focused on how and why writing was important to this group as well as what patterns and themes emerged in their work. Data from questionnaires offered that the social aspect of writing appeared to be the strongest motivating factor for participation. Numerous individual reasons for writing were listed, and these, as well as the unique ideas presented in excerpts from the work itself, created a resonant picture of writing in participants’ lives. The resulting anthology contained a predominance of non-fiction, including life writing components within fictive pieces, utilizing the expressive function. Key themes included identity, olden days, progress, humour, nature, religion, and the love of family. Implications involve the importance of community writing events for writers who may not have other means of developing individual writing networks. Further research is recommended related to seniors and literacy to add to what is currently a limited academic viewpoint regarding this population.

This thesis paper examines how six upper secondary school students perceive assigned fiction. In particular the students’ thoughts on issues which affect their reading are studied. Moreover the way the assigned fiction is assessed is also explored. The interviewed students were goal oriented yet they expressed certain dissatisfaction towards how the fiction was used in the classroom and suggested other means to facilitate fiction reading in classroom settings. Two of the students expressed they were under a great deal of stress, and indicated this ultimately affected their outlook on fiction reading.

This essay is focusing on five pupils’ motivation towards reading literature. To better understand these pupils’ thoughts about reading and what it is that makes them want to read. Qualitative interviews with five pupils in third grade were performed. The informants were chosen according to categories of readers (Nyström, 2002), two of the pupils appreciate reading both in school and at home, two others do not appreciate reading to the same extent and one pupil is interested depending on what and when reading has to take place. The results show that according to the pupils, the narrative content and the level of excitement while reading have a big impact on their motivation. Another factor of impact is environmental change that is reading in another place outside the classroom. The informants also consider that if the teachers share their experiences about good stories they have read, this could elevate the pupils’ motivation towards reading. If a pupil has difficulties to read the idea that came from the interviewed pupils was that the teacher could sit with that pupil and read every other page in the book. The conclusion of this essay is that pupils have a lot of ideas about what motivates them to read and how a teacher could integrate these ideas in their teaching.

The aim of this essay is to investigate teachers’, students’ and researchers’ opinions on the idea of using literature to motivate students into learning grammar. How is and how could authentic texts be used in grammar teaching?

My research is based on a questionnaire given to 23 students at an upper secondary school after participating in a lesson constructed to try out the essay thesis. The essay is also based on literature on the subject and three personal interviews.

The students were very positive towards the idea and stated that it would feel more real to be taught grammar from real texts. The teachers did not want to teach grammar sections as before. Instead they choose to use a more individual response strategy which they feel gives better results. The idea of giving individual response as a way of grammar teaching is also advocated in the background. The idea of using real texts instead of a textbook is given both positive and negative credit.

In this study, I have looked at pupils attitudes to reading based on an assumption from me that children seem to have a negative attitude to reading and that they don’t read much. My assumptions are based on my experience and research on reading, mainly reports from the National Agency (Skolverket, 2009) & (Skolverket, 2007). The purpose of the study is to gain a deeper knowledge and understanding of why they don’t read. My study is based on a survey in which students in third grade participated, and then based on the survey, two students were selected to participate in an interview. The results showed that students actually do read and they don’t really have anything against it, but they'd rather choose something else to do. These students chose to play computer, watch movies, or sit with the iPad instead of reading. The reason was simply that it was more enjoyable and less tiring than it is to read. One of the students said that the only way he saw for him to read more, was that the options he would rather chose simply disappeared.

The purpose of this work of development is to provide a proposal on how teachers can engage and motivate more students to strive to achieve the goals in Swedish and history in high school. Based on previous research, various theorists, the curriculum of primary education in 2011 and the new curriculum for Swedish history and form a development that is based on a thematic approach in which literature is central to the theme and where teaching materials are replaced with various diverse elements that movie, museum visits, guest speakers, etc. The theme is called revolutions of the era and deals with 1700 - 1800 with a focus on French Revolution, ideologies and the social currents that result from it. Students work in groups and with three individual tasks. Theme work spans six weeks and a total of 30 hours. The issues were the subject of the essay is: How can you work educationally to get more students interested, engaged and make them feel included in order to seek to achieve the goals? How can we as teachers work pedagogically to have more time with their students? How can one based on different learning theories to create a larger context and give a greater motivation for students in their teaching?

This paper adopts an interdisciplinary approach to material culture and art criticism in examining everyday objects within contemporary collection-art. In this context, this paper argues that: the investigation of collection motivations (fetish, souvenir and system) as metaphor, process and imagery in conjunction with the mimicking of museology methodologies (classification, order and display) is an effective model for interpreting everyday objects within contemporary collection-art. In formulating this argument, this paper examines the ways in which artists emulate museology methodologies in order to convey cultural significance for everyday objects. This is explored in conjunction with the employment of collection motivations by artists as a device to understand elements of human/object relations. In doing so, it contemplates the convergence between the practices of museums and collection-artists. These issues are explored through the visual and analytic investigations of key artist case studies including: Damien Hirst, Sylvie Fleury, Mike Kelley, Christian Boltanski, On Kawara, Luke Roberts, Jason Rhoades, Karsten Bott and Elizabeth Gower. Please!”
Motivation is an important component of success in second language acquisition, as the process is both time-consuming and involved (Gass & Selinker, 2008, p. 426). According to Skolverket, the reading and analysis of fiction is a subject requirement in Swedish as a second language (Skolverket, 2011, s. 2). Books with incomprehensible words can be perceived as insurmountable obstacles in SLA, and motivation can be the driving force prompting the learner to conquer these unavoidable hurdles and distractions. The aim of this close study of an eight-year-old child in second grade was to analyze how drama as a motivation tool affected the learner’s reading experience and how the child expressed their related feelings. Consequently, the study is a qualitative, phenomenological study of a student with English as their L1. Audio recordings were used to document the drama-related activities used in the reading of the book, as well as the student’s reactions. For the analysis, parts of the recordings were transcribed. The results showed that the student’s commitment, empathy, and motivation regarding the reading increased when drama was used. The learner acted as if they were in front of an audience, laughed and screamed, illustrated with their body, embodied the characters emphatically, improvised, and read with increased conviction and understanding. Additionally, the learner verbally expressed their joy by asking: “Can we dramatize it? Please!”

This chapter focuses on the way in which a settlement of differences between English language fiction and foreign fiction is always changing. During the Second World War, there were special reasons and motivations for literary allegiance that went beyond individual taste and circumstance. An economy of scarcity, both of materials and of the means of communication, prompted a marshalling of resources by editors and publishers to maintain existing links and forge new ones. The urgency of this literary war effort was meant to consolidate morale but must have also exposed the imagination’s vulnerability to attack. With the closing of the shipping lanes and the shrinking of the usual means of maintaining overseas contacts, British editors became keenly aware of the threat to literary relations.

Providing intriguing insights for students, film buffs, and readers of various genres of fiction, this fascinating book delves into the psychology of 100 well-known fictional characters. Our favorite fictional characters from books and movies often display an impressive and wide range of psychological attributes, both positive and negative. We admire their resilience, courage, humanity, or justice, and we are intrigued by other characters who show signs of personality disorders and mental illness—psychopathy, narcissism, antisocial personality, paranoia, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia, among many other conditions. This book examines the psychological attributes and motivations of 100 fascinating characters that include examples of both accurate and misleading depictions of psychological traits and conditions, enabling readers to distinguish realistic from inaccurate depictions of human behavior. An introductory section provides a background of the interplay between psychology and fiction and is followed by psychological profiles of 100 fictional characters from classic and popular literature, film, and television. Each profile summarizes the plot, describes the character's dominant psychological traits or mental conditions, and analyzes the accuracy of such depictions. Additional material includes author profiles, a glossary of psychological and literary terms, a list of sources, and recommended readings.

AbstractIn the Western imaginary, the “south seas” of the Pacific Ocean has always been a speculative space on which both desires and fears are projected. Western images of fantastical, utopian spaces and exotic species ripe for conquest and capitalist extraction have left long legacies, that today continue to impact on issues of land ownership, indigenous agency, and response to ecological devastation. The conceptualization of the “south seas” in Britain’s first financial crisis, the 1720 south sea Bubble and its associated satirical fiction, produced a dominant, overdetermined imaginary of the Pacific that masked its real financial and economic motivations. As this paper’s analysis of the 2017 BBC television series Taboo argues, this imaginary stubbornly remains 300 years later, enabling unbound speculative investment, extraction, and concealment that are damaging the world economy through offshore finance, and global ecology through reckless pillaging of natural resources.

AbstractWriting at a time in which speculative ways of thinking appear to be undergoing a reprise across the social sciences and humanities – whether through engagements with speculative cosmology (Stengers, 2006), speculative empiricism (Debaise, 2017), speculative fabulation (Haraway, 2011), speculative research (Wilkie et al., 2017), or speculative realism (Bryant et al., 2011) – in this chapter we introduce Speculative Geographies and our motivation for assembling the collection as a way of considering what concepts and practices of speculation might mean for geography, and how speculation might itself be conceived as geographical. In approaching the relationship between speculation and geography, we introduce the book as a collective desire to complicate the modes of thought used to evaluate experience by crafting alternatives, pluralising perspectives, and thereby problematising the immediately given. Far from abstract thinking, in this chapter we conceptualise speculation, after A.N. Whitehead, as a task of thinking abstractions – a style of thinking that prioritises an openness to what thought might become, and which therefore reconfigures empirical problems beyond what seems given in an immediate experience. The chapter traces key genealogies of this speculative practice including speculative philosophy, speculative fiction, and speculative design. Finally, we provide an overview of how the three themes of the book – ethics, technologies, aesthetics – speak to the chapters making up this edited collection.

This chapter locates the roots of the pragmatic genealogical tradition in David Hume’s explanations of artificial virtues as remedies to inconveniences. The motivation for Hume’s turn to genealogy is examined, and it is shown how viewing his accounts of the virtues of justice and fidelity to promises through the lens of pragmatic genealogy sets them apart from the Enlightenment genre of conjectural history. Four functions performed by Hume’s fiction of a counterpossible state of nature are identified, and it is shown how Hume introduces two key ideas: that under certain circumstances, the motivations to engage in a practice need to be non-instrumental motivations if the practice is to be stable; and that shared needs can give rise to practices that serve a point for participants even when those fail to grasp what that point is. This prevents genealogies from becoming overly intellectualist or circular.

Sales numbers in printed books have been on the slope since many years in Hungary and in many other countries too. Finding the motivations among these decreasing trends of reading and book consumption may eventually help in turning the book industry’s way on this downhill backwards and putting the book consumption on rising trails again. A series of interviews and focus group interviews are coming up within the frames of a doctoral research targeting the exploration of motivators for book consumption and the consumer behavior of book consumers. This article presents a pilot study done in the exploratory phase of the research. The study is a mini focus group interview conducted with fiction reader participants. The article summarizes the theoretical background for book consumption. Being a white spot in the academic discussion, the study outlines the Book Consumption areas for exploration: Reading habits; Parallel Reading; Preferences over E-book v. Printed books; Preferences over the physical attributes of a book; Ways of choosing books to read; Motivations for reading; Re-reading; Process of Book purchasing; Giving Feedback and Recommendations. Analyzing the group discussion the article identifies research topics to be covered in future qualitative studies and suggests potential variables for quantitative research. The study makes suggestions for future research.

Streszczenie:
The paper presents a serious game, implemented as a software application, aimed towards beginner programmers with the purpose of teaching programming languages fundamentals. The application is a top-down 2D game combining elements from the shooter and strategy (particularly tower defense) genres, with high-level visual programming elements, giving it an educational component. The user creates the scripts in a visual manner, creating the flow of scripting elements then programming each element. Serious games are games which are designed and developed without having entertainment as their main purpose. Instead, their primary purpose is to educate, train, or inform their audience. The meaning of the term has evolved in the last few years and currently it is usually assumed that serious games are video games, rather than physical, non-digital games. Digital game-based learning is a subset of serious games having as a main purpose to educate the player through the use of video games. Video games manage to keep the players interested, even if they find themselves in challenging situations, and this is on account of the intrinsic motivation they achieve to maintain on the players. What makes learning an intrinsically motivating process is similar to what makes a video game intrinsically motivating, this being challenge, curiosity, fantasy and control. Contextualization, personalization, and choice improve the intrinsic motivation of a learner, thus increasing their degree of engagement in the learning process and ameliorating their learning performance. These three properties are often present in most video games. This compatibility between video games and learning makes integrating the one to the other an easier accomplishment. While some other serious games aimed at programming exist, such as RoboCode, CodeCombat, Kernel Panic, CoLoBoT, CeeBot, CodeSpells, there is still much room for innovation, and our application explores new features and modes of play, focusing more on the program structure and logic than on the syntax.

Streszczenie:
Engaging a pedagogical methodology developed to question the status-quo of the design studio, this paper discusses research on architectural pedagogy. Titled “Strategic Deviations,” this suggested methodology argues for the necessity of carefully orchestrated provocative and unexpected moments in the curriculum; moments that unsettle the students by connecting them with elements of the creative world outside architecture. By doing so the goal is two-fold: to expand their understanding of architecture’s definition and role in our contemporary society and to amplify their willing-ness to engage with new challenges, moving from a feeling of anxiety to one of creative control. The discussion sets off with an overview of the approach’s philosophical and educational underpinning, situating it in a relevant literature of similar pedagogical methods. It elaborates on the educational context in which it was employed, the general student demographics, and the motivations which lead to its conception. It then zooms into the case of a recent first-year studio and presents three strategic deviations designed specifically for the given context and year-level: “The Dinner Party,” “The Literary Imagination,” and “The Cinematographic View.” Examining the way each of the deviations functions in the given architectural environment and the way it enhances the learning outcomes, the paper demonstrates how this methodology opens up possibilities to transform a student’s trajectory moving forward. Arguably most importantly, it works to pull forward interdisciplinary links between architecture and other creative fields in a tangible way. Presented as an opportunity to celebrate the beginning of a new semester, “The Dinner Party” is a playful and engaging way to bring forward architecture’s social capacity. It pulls from culinary culture to emphasize that architecture is often the design of an atmosphere, ritual or experience. Introduced as a deep breath during midterms week and camouflaged as a typical reading assignment, “The Literary Imagination” pulls from works of fiction to introduce students to alternative approaches for understanding, studying and representing space through the arts. Although perceived as an end of the semester documentation process, “The Cinematographic View” reinforces the first-years’ role as part of a larger design community and touches on cinema’s alluring capacity to capture and communicate space. Following a detailed description of the aforementioned deviations, the paper concludes by exploring the potential for this methodology to be employed in different contexts. It argues for the importance of an architectural education that surprises the students and connects emerging designers with the richness of the life and the world outside the confines of the discipline; the world for which they will be called to design for in the future.

Digital Game-based Learning (DGBL) has achieved several positive results in recent years, e.g., increased fun, motivation, or learning outcome. However, many DGBL applications fail, which makes an isolated consideration of individual game elements and their influence on learning necessary to better design future DGBL applications. One widely used game element is the game story. As there is little research on how a game story should be designed to promote learning, this paper conducts an experiment comparing a fictional game story with a realistic one. The results show that both game stories lead to a significant objective knowledge gain. In terms of learning outcome, both game stories achieved similar results.

In order to change the preconceptions of youth towards science and technology subjects (which, usually, are perceived as difficult or boring), new educational methods aimed at motivating and engaging students in learning are becoming more and more necessary. In this sense, an educational project called ‘UPCT-Bloopbusters’ through which a group of professors of the Universidad Politécnica de Cartagena (UPCT), Spain, use science fiction movie scenes ─as well as experiments─ within the lecture room to teach both physics and engineering technology is hereby presented. The methodology of the project is properly described and the results of a survey carried out among the students of a course in which such methodology has been used are shown. In view of this survey, it can be concluded that the project has been more than welcome by the students while at the same time has favored the learning of a great deal of physics and technology concepts.

The decision task was designed so that participants could work according to their preferences – everyone had enough time to analyse the logic behind the task. Significant differences were found among all four groups (deliberative, intuitive, both below median, both above median) in levels of inconsistency. Totally consistent respondents were significantly more likely to be from the deliberative and mixed (high in deliberation and in intuition) groups.

Automated essay scoring (AES) is the task of automatically assigning scores (i.e., grades) to written texts. Although AES has been widely studied in the literature (e.g., informational and argumentative essays), specific types of texts still need more attention. Narrative essays are characterized by texts describing personal experiences and stories, either real or fictional. In this work, we describe a study on scoring student essays written in Portuguese under the aspect of Formal Register, which evaluates aspects related to the use of Brazilian Portuguese formal grammar and proficiency. The dataset created in this study provides a rich corpus of narrative essays produced in the context of a motivational situation, with a diverse set of language proficiency levels annotated by two professional graders. Different machine learning algorithms were evaluated using a diverse set of handcrafted linguistic features, and their results were compared against manual scores by the two human annotators. The results of the proposed analysis demonstrated that the AES model proposed achieved an equivalent agreement to that of the two human annotators.

Streszczenie:
Culturemes are the markers of the source culture, which can reach the reader in the target language only through the ability of the translator, who must, in fact, be a great connoisseur of the most hidden cultural details. For the transposition of a foreign culture into a new culture, for a proper communication between them, a loan is needed, retrieval and processing of information so that it is accepted. The motivation behind this study is to provide an overview of how to approach culturemes in the translation of works of contemporary Chinese literature in Romanian, works characterized by great linguistic and extra-linguistic generosity. In order to achieve this goal, we followed the stages of identifying the culturemes from thirty-one Chinese contemporary novels translated in Romanian; followed by creating a corpus based on fourteen categories and five equivalence methods to ensure the cultural equivalence, coherence and homogeneity of Chinese works recreated for the Romanian reader. Finally, we performed an in-depth study of a selection of culturemes from each category, with the aim of showing their distribution in the Romanian translation of Chinese fiction. The study intends to provoke but also to help raise the awareness that translations are not only transpositions (by this we mean moving from one linguistic register to another without operating the text as part of a cultural whole, approaching it externally to all of its sources of influence from the culture in which it has been created) of a work in another language, but they have the primary role of enriching knowledge about one's culture, civilization, literature – i.e. China’s cultural heritage for the present study. Culturally-aware literary translations are the most effective and most stable manner of intercultural exchange, of international prosperity of a culture, of understanding and acknowledging the cultural specifics of one nation. The intertextual references – the culturemes – studied, are part, as will be presented, of all cultural spheres, from those denoting the daily life of the Chinese, the food and basic needs, to those denoting holidays, toponymy, units of measurement, history, but also those that are politically motivated, while also spiritual, subtle, erudite, which only close study, extensive knowledge and diligent work can drive the translator to find and transfer them to the target reader.
