This article investigates a corpus of sixteen thirteenth-century motets whose formal structures are rigorously modelled on the AAB formal type of the trouvère chanson. This corpus bears witness that the first specimens of hybridization between polyphony and the high-style lyric chanson arose as early as the 1240s, well before the emergence of fourteenth-century polyphonic song. The analysis of the make-up of the AAB form of the motets first reveals that its elements completely match those of the pedes-cum-cauda formal type of trouvère chansons. The formal impact of song citations within the corpus is then explored, together with the different modalities according to which they are involved in the make-up of the AAB form. Finally, the analysis of the texture of the works brings to light the singularity of their fabric: remodelled by the structures of the trouvère chanson, it breaks with the traditional format of the motet and turns into the texture of a motet-chanson.

Abstract A set of thirteenth-century parchment fragments, including the remnants of two rolls and one manuscript codex, preserves a largely unstudied repertoire unique to medieval England. In addition to a single motet and a setting of a responsory verse, the Rawlinson Fragments preserve twelve three-voice Alleluya settings. While polyphonic Alleluyas are well known from the continental Magnus liber repertoire, these insular Alleluya settings are quite different. Most significantly, while composed on the text and pitches of plainchant, they include newly composed texts in at least one voice—that is, they are polytextual chant settings. Aspects of their musical style certainly draw on other polyphonic genres—organum, conductus, and motet. This article presents the paleographical and codicological evidence that corroborates an early date for these fragments (in the 1240s), confirms their connection to Reading Abbey, and situates their repertoire within a broader context. My analysis points to intriguing points of overlap with both the plainchant prosula tradition and the Magnus liber organa and motets. It reopens broader questions about the copying and performance practices of liturgical polyphony, including previous suggestions that motet texts may have been sung within the performance of the Magnus liber organa, regardless of the scribal copying conventions that separated organum and motet in the surviving Magnus liber manuscripts. The article also considers the role of the Rawlinson Fragments’ main scribe, Benedictine monk W. de Wicumbe, who was active within the monastic communities of Leominster and Reading as a composer of plainchant and polyphony, and as precentor, most likely in charge of his community's musical life.

Henricus Isaac's grand six-voice motet Angeli archangeli (Angels, archangels) sets a text from the liturgy of the Feast of All Saints (November 1), but its only preexistent musical material is a cantus firmus in the tenor voice, drawn from the tenor of the mid 15th-century chanson Comme femme desconfortéée (As a woman in distress), attributed to Binchois. Scholars have assumed that Angeli archangeli is a motet for All Saints but have been at a loss to explain why Isaac chose the cantus firmus he did. This study attempts to explain Isaac's puzzling juxtaposition of Latin text and secular cantus firmus by suggesting that Angeli archangeli is not a motet for All Saints, but rather for the Assumption of the Virgin. Liturgical analysis of the motet text reveals that its connection to the Feast of All Saints (November 1) is weaker than has previously been assumed. Additionally, examination of numerous other sacred works that incorporate the Comme femme desconfortéée tenor demonstrates that it was widely understood as a Marian cantus firmus ca. 1500. The Marian associations of the cantus firmus help to explain why one manuscript source (VatS 46) groups the work with other Marian motets, and why another (LeipU 1494) transmits it with a Marian contrafact text (O regina nobilissima). Finally, by relating the musical construction of Angeli archangeli to the Assumption of the Virgin as depicted in late medieval liturgy, iconography, and in Jacobus de Voragine's widely read Legenda aurea, it is suggested that the text of Angeli archangeli, though drawn from the All Saints liturgy, actually describes Mary's assumption into heaven. Sacred text and secular cantus firmus thus collaborate in communicating a complex but clear theological/devotional meaning.

Purpose – Thematic coding is a common form of qualitative analysis, yet identification of “codes” can limit understanding by directing the researcher to formulated categories rather than inviting exploration of what else the data may be trying to convey. Since categorization is an essential component of language and can scarcely be avoided, the purpose of this paper is to propose a polyphonic approach as a way to add texture and nuance. In polyphonic coding, text is coded several times along various dimensions of interest; these independently coded versions are then superimposed to identify patterns and relationships, allowing a multi-lensed view of the data as both forest and trees. Design/methodology/approach – Polyphonic coding is applied to a specific interview in order to illustrate how the method can be utilized in a three-step process: in vivo coding from several independent perspectives (role, relational movement, and vocal mannerism), merging the perspectives, and “plugging in” to theory. Findings – Polyphonic coding reveals relationships among the perspectives that point to an over-arching theme (in the example used) of a struggle for control. Research limitations/implications – This approach offers a way to code verbal, tonal, and somatic data as a means of understanding the construction and negotiation of identity in the relational context of qualitative research. Practical implications – This approach promotes a flexible, expanded use of data analysis software. Originality/value – The metaphor of a musical motet is used to describe a multi-faceted approach to qualitative analysis that can help to mitigate some of the pitfalls of typical thematic coding.

Analysis of the architecture of the cathedral of Florence suggests that there is no correlation between the structural proportions in that church and the durational ratios in Guillaume Dufay's motet Nuper rosarum flores (as suggested by Charles Warren in 1973). The inspiration for the formal plan of the motet was likely not architecture, but a biblical passage (1 Kings 6:1-20), which gives the dimensions of the Temple of Solomon as 60 x 40 x 20 x 30 cubits. The vision of the Temple and, to a lesser degree, the image of the womb of the Virgin as the temple of Christ were elaborated upon by countless medieval exegetes, sermonizers, liturgical commentators, poets, and manuscript illuminators. Dufay expressed the traditional numerical symbols of the Temple (6:4:2:3, 4 and 7) and that of the Virgin (7) throughout the structure of his motet and thereby effected a musical union of these two spiritual forces.

Although Elisabeth Lutyens (1906-83) was a pioneer of British twentieth-century music, her work is relatively unknown in North America. This article begins with an introduction to her life and compositions, before going on to a detailed analysis of text-music relations in selected passages of her Motet, op. 27 (1953). The analysis forms the basis for a discussion of the concept of text as representation of music: Lutyens began to compose the music of the Motet first, and chose its text—excerpts from the Tractatus logico-philosophicus (1921) by the Austrian-born English philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein (1889-1951)—because it seemed a fitting expression of the musical ideas that had already begun to develop.

In 1587 the Flemish composer Carolus Luython, employed by Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II, published an unusual motet collection in Prague. Titled Popularis anni jubilus, the collection describes the sounds and rituals beloved by Central European peasants, recasting them as the ecstatic songs of rustic laborers (jubilus) famously celebrated by Saint Augustine in his Psalm commentaries. Highlighting the composer’s collaboration with the Czech cleric who wrote the motet texts, this study serves as a corrective to the interpretative frameworks that have broadly shaped discourses on Central European musical and religious practices in the early modern period. To make sense of the print’s raucous parade of drunken revelers, mythological figures, honking geese, and the Christ child, this analysis sets aside the hermetic lens typically used to account for the cultural products of the Rudolfine court and turns instead to contemporary theological tracts and writings by Augustine and Ovid that were foundational to the literary worlds of Renaissance humanists. Doing so brings into focus an ordered sequence of motets that offers some of the earliest and most vivid documentation in Central Europe of lay practices associated with the major feasts of the church year, from the bonfires on the Nativity of St. John the Baptist to the drowning of winter on Laetare Sunday. At the same time, this study shows the extent to which such “folk” traditions, parsed along national lines since the nineteenth century, had in fact long occupied common ground in the diverse territories of Habsburg Central Europe.

Giuseppe Paolucci's Arte pratica di contrappunto (1765–72) is a collection of analyses of forty-two compositions from the sixteenth to the eighteenth century. It offers insights into eighteenth-century practices of music analysis as well as into historical concepts of counterpoint and fugue. Two analytical readings by Paolucci are translated and commented upon in this essay. Paolucci's analysis of Antonio Caldara's motet Peccavi super numerum is valuable for its references to rhetoric and the visual arts. The analysis of Handel's fugue "Then shall I teach thy ways" (from the Chandos Anthem HWV 248) exemplifies the high esteem in which contemporary writers and composers held Handel's compositional techniques, which Paolucci describes meticulously, bar by bar. Paolucci's reading of Handel's fugue, which is similar to Italian partimento fugues of that time, also provides material for the still-unwritten history of eighteenth-century Italian fugal theory.

In his magisterialLagrime di San Pietro(1595) Orlando di Lasso composed a cycle of 20 madrigals on texts by Luigi Tansillo on the theme of St Peter's denial of Christ and his subsequent remorse, capped by a Latin motet (‘Vide homo‘) representing the rebuke of the crucified Christ. TheLagrimemay be seen as a penitential gesture on Lasso's part, but a textual and musical analysis also suggests numerous parallels with contemporary Catholic spiritual exercises, particularly those of Ignatius of Loyola and Luis of Granada. The cycle thus takes its place in a broader Counter-Reformation discourse of meditation and penance.

Dated to the 1240s, the Florence manuscript (F: Biblioteca Medicea Laurenziana, Plut. 29.1) is the earliest surviving source to contain a collection of motets. The exclusively Latin-texted motets in F are widely regarded as the oldest layer(s) of pieces in this new genre. This study closely analyses three motets in F, demonstrating that they are Latin contrafacta reworkings of vernacular motets extant only in chronologically later sources. It traces the influences of secular, vernacular refrains in two supposedly liturgical clausulae in F, proposing that these clausulae are textless transcriptions of French motets, and engages with wider questions concerning scribal practices, the relationship between sine littera and cum littera notations and issues of consonance and dissonance. Reasons as to why clausulae might have been transcribed in F and the possible extent of vernacular influences in this manuscript are explored. These findings challenge established chronological narratives of motet development. The three case studies offer methodological models, demonstrating ways in which relationships between clausulae and Latin and French motets can be tested and their relative chronologies established.

The whimsical upper-voice texts of the anonymous fourteenth-century motet Musicalis/Sciencie stage an epistolary exchange between Rhetoric, Music, and a long list of French composers and singers. The letters complain that these musicians, whose ranks include Guillaume de Machaut and Philippe de Vitry, split words with rests when they write hockets. The critical tone of Musicalis/Sciencie implies that some ars nova composers must have regularly split words with hockets, while others—the motet’s composer, for one—held this to be bad practice. But since modern editions and medieval scribes alike are imprecise in the placement of text around hockets, the existence of such opposing camps seems difficult to substantiate. An analysis of text-note alignment in four sources for Apta/Flos reveals that some scribes were prescriptive in their texting of hockets, while others, like the scribe of the important Ivrea codex, were pragmatic. An awareness of these differences can lead to alternate modes of interpreting ambiguous text underlay. In the case of Philippe de Vitry’s Petre/Lugentium, shifting syllables adjacent to hockets can transform the work, highlighting carefully differentiated textural zones that are key to its structure. Such editorial intervention can in turn yield fresh insight into competing compositional approaches.

Guillaume Du Fay’s Nuper rosarum flores (1436) has been subject to symbolic interpretation ever since Charles Warren suggested that the structure of the motet reflects the architectural proportions of the cathedral of Florence. More recent analyses have accepted the premise that the motet’s form has extramusical meaning, in particular, that mensural and architectural proportions can be directly analogized. These tantalizing connections have led scholars to canonize this motet, now a mainstay of music history textbooks. The extent and specificity of the extramusical associations Nuper rosarum flores enjoys—an occasion, a place, and a secure attribution—are rare in the fifteenth century. This fact alone makes the motet appear to be exceptional. But reading Nuper rosarum flores alongside the norms of genre and notation and against the grain of the work’s modern historiography suggests that it isn’t all that special—or at least that it is no more special than Du Fay’s other ceremonial motets. The interpretive history of Nuper rosarum flores exemplifies what I call “false exceptionalism,” which relates to a more general problem in music studies—the alluring but often elusive relationship between musical form and social meaning.

ABSTRACTEight times a day, the prayerDeus in adiutorium meum intendesounded from the lips of the faithful as the standard introduction to the Office Hours. Infiltrating daily life through the liturgy and popular interjections, the psalm verseDeus in adiutoriumserved a devotional function marked by versatility and popularity. Yet, despite its omnipresence, as well as its inherently vocalic identity, the verse was only rarely troped musically or poetically. A collection of thirteenth-century monophonic and polyphonic tropes of the verse circulating in France in motet collections and festive offices represents one of the few moments of heightened musical interest in the prayer. This article draws attention, for the first time, to the musical and textual connection between these tropes andPater creator omnium, a thirteenth-century refrain song. This monophonic song from France also belongs firmly to the medieval cento genre, with both its musical and textual construction based on the piecing together of borrowed text and music – includingDeus in adiutorium. This article argues thatPater creator omniumstands at the intersection of two important yet understudied histories: the musical and textual troping ofDeus in adiutoriumand the medieval cento. Analysis of this song ultimately illustrates the creative processes behind the making of a pre-modern song.

In this paper, based on the Android devolvement board and TelosB mote, the Android terminal was built to collect data from a wireless sensor network composed of TelosB motes. The middleware was implemented on this Android terminal to parse the sensor data and store the data into databases. The evaluation process verified the deign feasibility.

Статья посвящена проблемам изучения теории и практики имитационной техники в полифонии строгого письма. Три типа имитации — простая, стреттная, каноническая — постоянно фигурируют в современной музыкально-теоретической литературе. Трактовки сути простой и канонической имитации в разных источниках совпадают, хотя формулировки в деталях разнятся. При этом значительны расхождения в понимании стретты. По традиции, заложенной учениями XVIII века, в теоретическом музыкознании стретту рассматривают в контексте формы фуги. Одновременно ряд исследователей считает возможным использовать понятие стретты по отношению к имитационному многоголосию Ренессанса. При этом термин употребляется в разных значениях. Материал исследования — начальные имитационные секции четырех-шестиголосных мотетов Палестрины без c. f. Тематическая организация рассматривается с учетом тексто-музыкальной формы мотета, в соответствии с которой функцию темы выполняет тексто-музыкальная строка, построенная на относительно стабильном соединении текстовой строки и развернутого мелодического soggetto. Ее неоднократные повторения позволяют обнаружить сходства и различия канонов и стретт в строгостильном многоголосии. The article is devoted to the problems of studying the theory and practice of imitation technique in polyphonic music of strict writing. Three types of imitation — simple, stretto and canonical — appear as relevant in modern musical theoretical literature. An analysis of the existing concepts showed that the interpretations of the essence of simple and canonical imitation in different sources coincide, although the formulations in details, as a rule, differ. Against this background, significant differences in the understanding of stretto (narrow, tight) imitation are especially noticeable. Many authors, foreign and domestic, starting from the teachings of the 18th century, consider the stretto in the context of the fugue form. At the same time, a number of researchers of the 20th century (domestic and foreign) have formed a different position. They believe that it is possible to expand the musical and historical boundaries of the use of the concept of stretto, its use in relation to the imitative polyphony of the Renaissance. The authors talk about the stretto in at least three different cases: the effect of a compressed temporary introduction of imitation voices (S. Skrebkov, T. Dubravskaya), narrow introduction of voices with their subsequent non-imitation promotion (N. Simakova), the tight entry of the rispost before the end of the theme in the propost, which does not fit into the canon (K. Eppessen, S. Skrebkov). The analysis of the musical material showed that the broadly understood stretto (the conciseness of the timing of the introduction of voices) is very typical of the polyphony of strict writing and manifests itself in many and different methods. The musical material of the study was the one-theme initial imitation sections of the four-six-part Palestrina motets, the compositional foundation of which lacks cantus firmus. Comments by Jacques de Lige suggest that Ars nova notation operated metrically at more than one rhythmic level. This is borne out by Machaut's compositions, the lais in particular. Inconsistencies within and between the two complete editions of Machaut's works in the reductions of note-values used for transcription indicate that the matter has not been fully resolved; uncertainty concerning metrical level in the polyphonic songs is evident in the different barrings of modus-level rhythmic organization. The system of 12 "modes" (mensural types) in the Compendium de discantu mensurabili by Petrus frater dictus Palma Ociosa reveals that meters centering on both "modus" and "tempus" levels were equally part of polyphonic practice in the mid 1330s. Editors have been wary of recognizing the modus level in Machaut's polyphonic songs because of the frequent irregularities in metrical grouping at this level; yet variation in modus is acknowledged by the Ars nova treatises. A full re-evaluation of the presence of modus in Machaut's songs is warranted. Coordinated analysis of rhythmic "layers" (figural grouping, agogic accent, simultaneous attack, and syllabic rhythm) in two ballades (B35 and B25) justifies the irregular modus recognized by both editions and points to an important distinction between mensuration (pertaining to the notation) and meter (pertaining to the rhythmic organization). Figural disposition, varied recurrence of material, and syllabic rhythm provide other criteria for recognizing variable metrical form. A full-scale analysis on these terms reveals the extent and nature of Machaut's use of modus. His technique of metrical variation conforms to four types (phrasal "distension" and "contraction"; cadential "contraction" and "extension"), and ties in with a 14th-century aesthetic viewpoint that attached great significance to "variety." Machaut himself recognized it as a musical corollary of the amorous condition in lyric song ("trespasser mesure," Motet 7). Reassessment of the modus level has consequences for the editorial approach to notae finales, sectional rests, and also for the choice of tempo in performance.

The concept of social networking literacy emerged with the advent of Web 2.0. This study aims to develop a scale to measure the social networking literacy proficiencies of individuals. An item pool was created after a thorough review of the literature and taking experts views, and then application form prepared. The scale was applied to students of the Faculty of Education of Sakarya University, and reliability and validity analyses were conducted on the data gathered from 313 students, using the SPSS 20 statistical software. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was used to examine the construct validity of the scale, and the internal consistency coefficient (Cronbach’s Alpha) was used to examine the reliability of the scale. The analyses conducted showed that the scale consisted of 40 items under a single factor which explained 61.179% of the total variance, and the Cronbach’s Alpha value calculated to examine the reliability of the scale was .98. In conclusion, analyses conducted to examine the reliability and the validity of the Social Networking Literacy Scale (SNLS) show that it is an efficient measurement tool to assess social networking literacy levels of the individuals.

This research investigates the prediction of delaying gratification on game addiction among primary school students who attend the 3rd and 4th-grade. This study, in which the delay of gratification behaviour correlated with game addiction among children, was carried out using a descriptive survey model. The study sample consisted of 318 students who attend 3rd and 4th-grade classes in a primary school in Kocaeli. Of the total 318 participants, 103 (32.4%) were 3rd graders and 215 (67.6%) were 4th graders. The gender ratios of the participants were 48.4% (154) female and 51.6% (164) male students. In the study, the Game Addiction Scale in Children and the Delay of Gratification Scale was implemented as data collection instruments. SPSS 23.0 package program was used for the analysis of the data. Descriptive statistics, correlation and regression analyses were used to analyse the data. Analysis findings showed a significant and positive correlation between game addiction and subfactors in the delay of gratification behaviours with the value of r=.658 for internet and TV, r=.584 for technology, r=.501 for sports, r=.361 for money, and r=.174 for food. As a result of the regression analysis, it was seen that the delay of gratification behaviours and its subfactors affected game addiction. With these results, the research, aimed to contribute to the disciplines related to psychological counselling and addiction regarding psychometric qualifications.

The hoard of coins from Smolnik (formerly Alteiche, Kreis Rosenberg) was discovered in the early 1930s. A forestry worker came across the 19 well-preserved gold coins in the sandy soils of the forest. The hoard consisted of a total of 15 nobles and 3 half-nobles of the English King Edward III (1327–1377) and one franc á cheval of the French King John II ‘the Good’ (1350–1364). Based on the work of Prof. Grollmus of Iława, the author aims to carry out an analysis of the structure of the hoard. It is also very important to interpret the phenomenon of the inflow of gold coins to Prussia. The second half of the XIV century until the start of the 15th century was a period of increased trade relations between the Order and England. In addition, there is an increase in crusading, which includes the Teutonic Order’s campaigns into Lithuania. Guests of the Order participated in these, including Eng�lish crusaders.

Writing in 1962, Joseph Kerman was the first to speculate about potentially subversive political meanings in the Cantiones sacrae of the English Renaissance composer William Byrd, his two collections of motets published in 1589 and 1591, ?voicing prayers, exhortations, and protests on behalf of the English Catholic community?. Subsequent research has corroborated Kerman?s speculations, showing that many of the texts Byrd set indeed feature the same politically charged metaphors that English Jesuit missionaries used to describe the predicament of Catholics living under the Protestant regime of Queen Elizabeth I, as well as that Byrd maintained close ties with many of these missionaries. In our own time, however, those who have analysed these motets, including Kerman, have paid little attention to this, preferring formal(ist) analytical approaches to this body of music. Focusing on Ne irascaris Domine, one of Byrd?s most famous ?political? motets, and the only two major analytical responses to it, this article attempts to demonstrate the limitations of formalist music analysis when applied to Renaissance sacred music.

Notwithstanding the reputation of Josquin’s Ave Maria…virgo serena as a touchstone of late–fifteenth-century musical style, little is known about the context in which the piece emerged. Just over a decade ago, Joshua Rifkin placed the motet in Milan ca. 1484; more recently, Theodor Dumitrescu has uncovered stylistic affinities with Johannes Regis’s Ave Maria that reopen the debate about the provenance of Josquin's setting. Stipulating that the issues of provenance and dating are for the moment unsolvable, I argue that the most promising way forward is to contextualize this work to the fullest extent possible. Using the twin lenses of genre and musical style, I investigate the motet’s apparently innovative procedures (e.g., paired duos, periodic entries, and block chords) in order to refine our understanding of how Josquin’s setting relates to that of Regis and to the Milanese motet cycles (motetti missales). I also uncover connections between Josquin’s motet and the music of earlier generations, above all the cantilena and the forme fixe chanson, that offer new insights into the development of musical style in the fifteenth century. The essay concludes by positioning the types of analyses explored here within a growing body of research that enables a revitalized approach to longstanding questions about compositional development and musical style.

The research aims to examine the relationship between cyber bullying and self-disclosure. Participants of the study were 480 high school students who answered the scales. According to the results, the dimensions of cyber bullying; verbal cyber-aggression and exclusion, impersonation and visual-sexual cyber-aggression are negatively related to self-disclosure. Stepwise multiple regression analysis results showed that dimensions of cyber bullying affected self-disclosure and verbal cyber-aggression and exclusion was a strong predictor of self-disclosure. The findings of the research were discussed within the framework of literature.

Mott-Schottky analysis has been carried out to study the semiconducting behavior of Ag2S-AgI material, which is used as membrane material in iodide ion sensors. Polycrystalline Ag2S-AgI materials with mixing ratios 1:1wasprepared by co-precipitation method and Mott-Schottky analysis was carried out. The impedance was recorded using a Solartron 1280 Schlumberger frequency response analyzer at 5 KHz and 10 mV perturbing signal. A straight line with a positive slope is observed between + 0.2 V to -0.2 V (SSE) indicating n-type semiconductor behavior of polycrystalline Ag2S-AgI membrane. The donor concentration ND was calculated from the slope using dielectric constant of Ag2S-AgI. The values obtained are ~ 6 orders of magnitude lower than in metals. This is an important implication for the charge and potential distribution at the semiconductor/electrolyte interface. The Mott Schottky analysis hasshown that the present materials are n-type semiconductors with donor defect concentration of 7.4x1017/cm3. Purpose In this child–parent research study, three adolescents theorize their meaning-making experiences while engaged in exclusive online learning during a three-month stay-at-home mandate. The purpose of this study is to highlight youth-created understandings about their literacy practices during COVID-19 in order to expand possibilities for youth-generated theory. Design/methodology/approach This child–parent research builds upon a critical dialectical pluralist (CDP) methodology, which is a participatory research method that looks to privilege the child as a co-researcher at every stage of the inquiry. In this research study, the adolescents work together to explore what it means to create and learn alone and then with others via virtual platforms. Research team discussions initially were scaffolded by the parent–researchers, and the adolescents developed their analyses individually and together, and their words and insights situate the findings and conclusions. Findings The musical form of a motet provides a metaphor that three adolescents used to theorize their meaning-making experiences during the stay-at-home order. The adolescents determined that time, frustration, and space were overarching themes that captured the essence of working alone, and then together, in messy, orchestrated online ensembles. Originality/value In this youth-centric research paper, three adolescents create understandings of their meaning-making experiences during the stay-at-home order and work together to determine personal and pedagogical implications.

The qualitative research method and phenomenology design were used in the research. The data were collected through semi-structured interviews, and twenty female teachers working in secondary schools in Ümraniye, Üsküdar, and Ataşehir participated in the study. The data were analysed with content analysis. The main themes resulting from the determined codes are ‘technological goals’, ‘pioneering behaviours’, ‘non-innovative behaviours’, ‘creative behaviours’, ‘traditionalist behaviours’, and ‘encouraging behaviours’.

Becoming one of the indispensable tools of our daily life, mobile phones have accelerated the pace of our life by facilitating our business affairs. In addition to the good aspects of these tools reshaping even our habits, they also have various psychological and physiological damages. One of the behaviors for which the cell phone is considered as harmful is phubbing. Phubbing is defined as giving the perception of the individual to his/her mobile phone, not to these people during the communication with other individuals. Considering the increasing use of such technological tools in the classroom, within the scope of phubbing, the status of teachers, one of the important stakeholders of the education environment, is also important. From this point of view, in this study, it was purposed to examine the status of being phubber of pre-service and in-service teachers and their exposure to phubbing in terms of age and gender variables. The study designed in correlational survey method, was conducted with the data collected from 293 people, 46 in-service teachers and 247 pre-service teachers, through the Generic Scale of Phubbing and Generic Scale of Being Phubbed. The independent samples t-Test and Pearson correlation analysis were implemented in the context of the research questions. The results of the analysis indicated that the pre-service teachers are higher in terms of both being a phubber and phubbee than the in-service teachers. In addition to this, it was comprehended that these concepts did not differ in terms of gender and age. On the other hand, it was found out that the behavior of being a phubber tended to increase as getting older. Moreover, it was observed that the participants and the pre-service teachers who were phubber were also exposed to this behavior.

The semiconductor properties of passive films formed on AISI 316 stainless steel in sulfuric acid solution were studied by employing Mott-Schottky analysis in conjunction with the point defect model. The donor density of the passive films, which can be estimated by the Mott-Schottky plots, changes depending on the film formation potentials. Based on the Mott-Schottky analysis, an exponential relationship between donor density and the film formation potentials of the passive films was developed. The results showed that the donor densities evaluated from Mott-Schottky plots are in the range 2-3 × 1021 cm−3and decreased with the film formation potential. By assuming that the donors are oxygen ion vacancies and/or cation interstitials, the diffusion coefficient of the donors, (), is calculated to be approximately 3.12 × 10−16 cm2/s.

The energy consumption in wireless sensor networks is the critical concern of different studies, especially because of the great effort, or even the impossibility, to replace the battery of their motes. Consequently, it is fundamental to investigate and evaluate the energy spent by every individual task executed by the motes in order to provide an efficient use of their batteries. In this work, we employ different metrics to present a thorough study of how the use of multiple transmission power levels affects multihop wireless sensor networks. This work is motivated by the current employment of the multiple transmission power levels, on both academic works and commercial solutions, which is a novel feature of some radio transceivers commonly used in wireless sensor network motes. Aiming for reliable and extensive analysis, this study employs simulations in different scenarios and models of commonly employed electronic components. The contribution of this works is a detailed investigation of the impact caused by the use of different transmission power levels employing different metrics, offering a wide perspective on the subject. In general, the results of this study indicate that the use of multiple power levels grants both positive and negative results, according to the scenario and metrics analyzed.

Abstract In this paper, a discriminant analysis, as useful tool to predict potential demand in Serbian motels, is presented. Through the presented literature review, it was determined that there is not a large number of surveys dealing with the needs and demand of transit tourists. Despite that, transit tourism is one of the priority forms of tourism for the Republic of Serbia in accordance with the established Tourism Development Strategy for the Republic of Serbia for the current period. Questionnaire survey as the main method for data collection is used. According to the results, 14 dimensions of potential guests’ expectations are extracted. The results of discriminant function analysis (DFA) present the impact of potential motel guests’ expectations on the main reason for travelling, while the results of canonical varieties analysis (CVA) present the impact of potential motel guests’ expectations on preferred services in Serbian motels.

The current study aimed to investigate the relationship between middle school students’ science course attitudes and robotics attitudes. To this end, the correlational survey model was used. The study group of the current study is comprised of 220 students attending middle schools in the 2019-2020 school year. In the study, the “Science Course Attitude Scale” was used to measure the students’ science course attitudes and the “Robotics Attitude Scale” was used to measure their robotics attitudes. In the study, the relationship between the robotics attitude dataset consisted of the learning desire, self-confidence, computational thinking and teamwork variables and the science course attitude dataset consisted of the daily life and learning new knowledge, difficulty in practice, problem solving, motivation and anxiety variables was analyzed with the canonical correlation analysis. As a result of the study, a significant correlation was found between the science course attitudes and the robotics attitudes and the covariance shared between the datasets was found to be 38.4%. The relationship between these two variables was discussed and various suggestions were made.

Although school administrators have carried out schools' general activities within the framework of social isolation rules, they have done all kinds of work to efficiently continue the distance education process. This study aimed to determine school administrators' views on distance education activities during the COVID-19 pandemic process. The study results are considered important since they will provide information on school administrators' perceptions of distance education during the COVID-19 pandemic process. The study was designed according to the qualitative research method. 46 school administrators (Principal or Deputy Principal) working in Elazığ province. A structured interview form was used as the data collection method. The "content analysis" was performed in the study. The responses in all interview forms were tabulated under common codes to form categories (themes).

The advancement of magnetics science and technology requires the ability to image magnetic microstructure, i.e. domains, below the 1 micron optical resolution limit. As an alternative to Lorentz microscopy, SEMPA was proposed in 1982 after it was realized that the secondary electrons ejected from a ferromagnetic surface are spin polarized. That is, they retain both the degree and direction of polarization characteristic of the spin alignment within the ferromagnet. By replacing the secondary electron detector in a UHV SEM with a detector capable of measuring both the number and polarization of the secondary electrons, it has been possible to simultaneously image both physical and magnetic microstructure. A conceptually similar microscope has been under development by Koike et alSEMPA depends on the availability of a efficient way to measure the spin polarization of a free electron beam. Traditionally, Mott scattering has been used. Mott detection is based on the small spatial asymmetry that occurs when electrons are scattered from a high-Z material at 120KeV.

Purpose The motel industry in Taiwan is a highly competitive industry, which requires considerable investment and demands innovative services. This paper aims to identify the competitive qualities that urgently require improvement to enhance the service quality of motels using the two-phase method of importance-performance and gap analysis (IPGA) and the Kano model, and develops specific improvement strategies. Design/methodology/approach By questionnaire survey, this study collects 562 valid questionnaires from motels in Taipei City. The IPGA and Kano model are used to identify the service attributes of market competitiveness that urgently require improvement. Findings The results show there are 14 attributes that should be urgently improved, of which four are the attractive qualities of market competitiveness (competitive qualities). This study develops ten improvement strategies, as based on the four competitive qualities, for the reference of the motel industry. Practical implications The results can identify the competitive qualities that require urgent improvement to address the development of improvement strategies for motels. The managers of motels can refer to the ten improvement strategies to create excellent and competitive motel services. Originality/value The results combine “customers’ needs” with “the competitive meanings of quality attributes in the market” under limited resources, to upgrade motel service quality, customers’ willingness to purchase and motel competitiveness.

We review our theoretical analysis of repulsively interacting three-component fermionic atoms in optical lattices. We discuss quantum phase transitions at around half filling with a balanced population by focusing on Mott transitions, staggered ordering, and superfluidity. At half filling (with 3/2 atoms per site), characteristic Mott transitions are induced by the anisotropic interactions, where two-particle repulsions between any two of the three colors have different strengths. At half filling, two types of staggered ordered states appear at low temperatures depending on the anisotropy of the interactions. As the temperature increases, phase transitions occur from the staggered ordered states to the unordered Mott states. Deviating from half filling, an exotic superfluid state appears close to a regime in which the Mott transition occurs. We explain the origin of these phase transitions and present the finite-temperature phase diagrams.

In cattle, ovarian superovulation followed by invivo embryo collection and transfer (MOET), and the invitro production (IVP) of embryos are used all over the world to improve animal genetics. Application of MOET has resulted in the production of billions of healthy animals during the past 40 years, and IVP has evolved and given rise to significant numbers of calves during the past 10 years. Nevertheless, the use of MOET and IVP can affect the embryo epigenome, and therefore its transcriptome, before and after elongation, as shown by different studies. The integration of publicly available epigenome-transcriptome datasets generated by these studies could lead to a robust characterisation of the impacts of the application of MOET and IVP. The goal of this study was to integrate all publicly available data about MOET and IVP embryos to determine temporally differentially methylated regions (DMRs) and differentially expressed genes (DEGs) from blastocyst to elongation between IVP and MOET embryos. Datasets were downloaded from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database. Accession numbers were (1) for epigenomics: GSE69173, GSE97517, and GSE101895, plus one provided dataset from O’Doherty et al. (2018 BMC Genomics, 19, 438; https://doi.org/10.1186/s12864-018-4818-3), all hybridized to the EDMA platform GPL18384; (2) for transcriptomics: GSE12327, GSE21030, GSE24596, GSE24936, GSE27817, and GSE40101, all hybridized to the Affymetrix platform GPL2112. Both types of data were analysed with the limma package for R software, and functional enrichment analysis was done with the DAVID database. For DMRs, comparisons between IVP and MOET were made from spherical blastocysts (n=16 per group) on Day 7, to embryos on Day 15, specifically in the trophectoderm (TE) or embryonic disc (ED) regions (n=4 per region and per group). For DEGs, comparisons between IVP and MOET were made from spherical blastocysts (n=9 per group) to elongated blastocysts on Day 13 and embryos undergoing gastrulation on Day 16 (n=6 per group). Considering a P-value <0.05 and fold-change >2, there were 16 672 (TE) and 26 264 (ED) DMRs and 2236 DEGs that temporally differed between IVP and MOET. Most of the identified DMRs were found in intronic regions (around 36%) rather than exonic regions (8%). However, DMRs that were more methylated at IVP compared with MOET contained exons encoding for genes that enriched the Wnt signalling Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway in the ED, and focal adhesion and ECM-receptor interaction KEGG pathways (P<0.05) in the TE. Accordingly, DEGs with lower expression in elongated embryos (Day 13 and Day 16) at IVP as opposed to MOET were mainly associated with these three pathways. In conclusion, this multi-omics analysis demonstrates that even when embryos are produced under different conditions and experiments, the main changes imposed by IVP affected genes involved in embryonic development and adhesion to the endometrium, which could explain the lower survival rates at IVP compared with MOET.

This paper is mainly based on the college formula race car, through the application of CAN bus communication interface settings, the layout and adjustment of the car sensors, and then carry out the data collection and analysis of the car. CAN bus is the local area network of controller and is one of the field bus which is put forward by German Bosch company and applied most widely in the world. The development of the data analysis system is mainly based on the MoTeC i2 data analysis software. MoTeC i2 data analysis software has been developed for many years under the continuous research of professional teams all over the world. According to the data analysis requirement of FSAE undergraduate Formula 1 teams, this paper introduces a series of data analysis methods closely related to FSAE, mainly including data channel research. This paper expounds the reliability, suspension, tire temperature, steering, and braking data analysis, respectively. Based on the data analysis template created by Motec i2, this paper conducts analysis and basic application according to the data of the real car, so as to meet the requirements of verifying design made by simulation model and tuning the real car scientifically. By means of wheel speed sensor, acceleration sensor, displacement sensor, multichannel temperature sensor, and so on, we conduct a series of tests on 2020 season car, including endurance test, linear acceleration experiment, steady rotation, etc., evaluate the data collected, and then carry on a reasonable set-up of racing, ultimately improving lap speed.
