This article presents the experience of working in the genre of scientific biography of an outstanding representative of Russian culture at the turn of the XIX–XX centuries, priest Vasily Mikhailovich Metallov, who combined church service with scientific and pedagogical musical activity (to a lesser extent, composing).V.M. Metallov has come a long way from a provincial rural priest to the rector of the Kazan Church on Red Square in Moscow. Developing the talent of a research scientist, he achieved great results in the field of studying ancient Russian church music history, set forth in a number of fundamental works. In his extensive pedagogical activity, he sought to transfer his scientific knowledge to students of spiritual and secular educational institutions in Saratov and Moscow: the Saratov Theological Seminary, the Synodal School of Church Singing, the Moscow Conservatory of the Russian Musical Society, the Archaeological Institute. The central place in the secular ministry of V.M. Metallov was occupied by the Moscow Conservatory. In it, he continued the tradition of teaching the spiritual and musical training course «The History of Church Singing», the founder of which was Archpriest Dimitri Vasilyevich Razumovsky, and the successor Stepan Vasilyevich Smolensky. By his works and trying to preserve the presence of the spiritual and musical subject in the conditions of the reformation after 1917 of pre-revolutionary musical education at the Moscow Conservatory, V.M. In this way, he preserved the foundation, which in the future allowed the interest of musical researchers to revive in the national «monument» — the ancient Russian church music art.The article observes the chronological outline of the biography of V.M. Metallov, supplemented by a number of little-known details and documentary evidence discovered during the study of archival materials and documents.

The article is devoted to the revival of the opera "Asya" by M. M. Ippolitov-Ivanov in a concert version at the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory. The article compares the text of the story "Asya" by I. S. Turgenev and the libretto of the eponymous opera by M. M. Ippolitov- Ivanov, which was first staged at the Russian Private Opera on September 28, 1900 under the direction of its author with the scenery by M. Vrubel. The dramatic features of the opera "Asya" are briefly characterized as lyrical scenes, partly inheriting the genre features of Tchaikovsky's opera "Eugene Onegin". The questions of the internal relationship of the musical material are raised: through repetitions or figurative allusions of waltz, through contrasting mass scenes (with an abundance of participants: students, walking crowds, men, women, children) and lyrical chamber episodes (Asya, her brother Gagin and Mr. N. N.). The role of the direct quotations in the score by Ippolitov-Ivanov (the student's anthem "Gaudeamus igitur" and "Landesvater", the ceremony of stringing student's hats on a sword), and light allusions to Tchaikovsky's "Eugene Onegin", are discussed. In conclusion, the concert performance of "Asya" at the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory on June 6, 2022, is briefly reviewed.

The article is devoted to the evolution of the image of the Moscow principality, and then the state in the works of Polish chroniclers of the XV-XVI centuries Jan Dlugosh and Matvey Mekhovsky. Attention is paid to the characteristics of Moscow, and how these characteristics changed as it strengthened. Particular attention is paid to the assessments of J. Dlugosh and M. Mekhovsky regarding their contemporary Moscow princes and rulers of Poland and Lithuania, as well as the expansion of the territory of the Moscow principality. Respect for Moscow princes and criticism of Polish rulers are especially noted. Based on a comparative analysis of the news of J. Dlugosh and M. Mekhovsky, a growing interest in the Moscow state is shown, a geographical description of which is given by M. Mekhovsky. The work shows that the Polish chroniclers have not yet been interested in the internal political history of Moscow - all references were exclusively related to Polish or Lithuanian events. The relevance of the study is due to the role played by Polish historiography of the XV-XVI centuries in shaping the image of the Moscow state, Russia in Europe, in particular, M. Mekhovsky’s Treatise on the Two Sarmatians.

The article reconstructs the biography of a little-known Ukrainian poetess Lada Mogylianskaya and the history of her relationship with M. Gorky; fragments of her poems in Ukrainian and Russian are given. Mogilyanskaya was first repressed in 1929 in the case of the Ukrainian “Democratic Union”, passed through the Solovetsky prison, D.S. Likhachev. Subsequently, she ended up at the construction site of the White Sea-Baltic Canal, was released ahead of schedule and received an award sign. From 1934 she worked in the cultural and educational department of the Dmitrov prison and on the construction of the Moscow — Volga Canal. M. Gorky repeatedly took part in the fate of Mogilyanskaya, appealing to high-ranking officials and petitioning to alleviate her fate. In 1937, after the arrest of G.G. Yagoda and the head of Dmitlag S.G. Firin, she was repressed a second time and died. The article also examines the work of the cultural and educational departments of the GULAG, in which representatives of the creative intelligentsia could escape from overwhelming, destructive labor. For the first time, the article introduces into scientific circulation M. Gorky's letters to various persons related to the fate of the poetess, letters to him from the Ukrainian philologist M.M. Mogilyansky, poet S. Marshak and other documents stored in the A.M. Gorky’s archive in Moscow.

Streszczenie:
The process of the evolution of M. M. Khvostov's scientific consciousness from a historianresearcher of a historical fact and a purely empirical analysis of its consequences to a social scientist who recognized the need to combine nomotetic and idiographic cognition techniques in historical epistemology, as well as the importance of applying a sociological approach to the study of a complex of internally conditioned causes of the development of an integral social reality. The result of the synthesis of individualizing history and generalizing sociology M. M. Khvostov considered sociological history capable of neutralizing the purely theoretical nature of sociology and the purely empirical nature of history. Attention is drawn to the commitment of the professor, who aspired to the accuracy and infallibility of the results of scientific research, to the logical-cognitive model of positivism. Combining in his work strictly scientific methods of cognition with subjectivist methods (understanding, empathy), he nevertheless could not recognize the inevitability of distortion in the process of cognition of objective historical reality. The influence of the cultural-epistemological context of the turn of the XIX–XX centuries on the scientific worldview of M. M. Khvostov is noted and the conclusion is drawn about the secondary nature of his theoretical and methodological ideas borrowed from the works of European thinkers and the culture of science-making by professors of the Imperial Moscow University. The special significance of P. G. Vinogradov's "methodological school" is revealed, which influenced M. M. Khvostov's interpretations of the theory of history, the theory of cognition and the methodology of historical research. At the same time, it is emphasized that M. M. Khvostov surpassed his "scientific mentors" in the thoroughness and depth of the study of the factors of historical development. He saw the future of historical science in the integration of the theoretical potential, scientific apparatus and research tools of all social sciences, both socio-humanitarian and natural.

The article is devoted to the contribution of the great Russian scholar economist N. M. Rimashevskaya to development of gender economic studies in the USSR and in Russia. N. M. Rimashevskaya found a scientific school of gender studies in the USSR, then developed it in Russia, amid the changing economic and socio-political order. The authors consider the scientific and socio-political path of N. M. Rimashevskaya and the directions of her work in the field of gender economic studies in the Soviet, transitional periods and in the new Millennium. The article shows the role of N. M. Rimashevskaya in institutionalization of gender studies in the USSR and Russia, in particular, in creation of the Moscow Center for Gender Studies, academic journal "Population", in conducting the Taganrog project, which is unique in terms of duration and its socio-economic and gender analysis' depth. Ahead of the spread of the gender agenda among international organizations such as the UN, as early as in the 1960s and 1970s, N. M. Rimashevskaya conducted gender comparison of the daily time-use and its distribution to paid and unpaid work based on the data collected in Taganrog, predetermining one of the most relevant areas for development of gender economic analysis and gender budgeting, as well as economic analysis in general. The article also pays attention to the research and development of strategic concepts concerning the country's socio-economic policy and the programs carried out by the Moscow Center for Gender Studies. The impact of the scientific school of gender studies in Moscow on the formation and institutionalization of women's social and political movements in the newly formed democracy in the early 1990s also deserves a special attention. And finally, the key areas of economic research on gender inequality conducted under the leadership of N. M. Rimashevskaya are structured and described. Keywords: gender inequality, gender economic studies, N. M. Rimashevskaya, Moscow school of gender studies, gender economic theory.

The results of a dendrochronological analysis of the European larch (Larix decidua Mill.) forest plantations growth in the zone of influence of motor transport pollution in the territory near the Moscow Ring Road at a distance of 8 and 18 m from the roadbed and in a recreational plantation in the third stage of digression are presented. The influence of these factors at the age of European larch from 5 to 65 years was revealed. It has been established that in plantations near the Moscow Ring Road, the annual radial growth of European larch wood is on average 45 %, in a plantation with a recreational load it makes up 62 % of the increase in the control plot, remote from highways and settlements. Differences in annual increments are statistically significant throughout the entire observation period. The average long-term growth of wood at a distance of 8 m from the Moscow Ring Road is 34 % lower than at a distance of 18 m. With an increase in the distance from the roadbed by 1 m, the annual growth of wood increases by 0,2 mm. In forest plantations of European larch, growths of early wood predominate: in areas near the Moscow Ring Road — an average of 68 % of the annual growth, in a plantation with a recreational load — 63 %, in the control plot — only 49 %.

Methods: We determined the linezolid MICs for clinical isolates from the Moscow region and identified mutations in rplC and rrl genes. Results: All 16 linezolid-resistant isolates had previously reported mutations in the rplC or rrl loci, and 13 of them bore a RplC C154R substitution. Detection of this substitution in a heteroresistant state was not successful, probably, due to the more stable DNA secondary structure of the mutated fragment, which precludes its amplification in mixes with the wild-type DNA. Strains with an rplC mutation had higher linezolid MIC compared to isolates with rrl mutations. Conclusions: Linezolid resistance mostly emerged during treatment with the latest regimen. Three primary cases with linezolid resistance question the possible transmission of totally drug-resistant tuberculosis in the Moscow region, which demands further investigation.

French opera with spoken dialogues translated into Russian was a bright phenomenon of Moscow musical life of the last quarter of the 18th century. In this article a unique monument of it is examined: manuscript materials of the first two acts of the Russian version of the opera “Marriages Samnites” by A.-E.-M. Grétry, which has been preserved in the Foundation of Written Sources of the Moscow Museum-Estate Ostankino. In spite of the desire to present the play “as in France” almost every work translated into Russian has been transformed in some way. An example of “Marriages Samnites” is particularly illustrative in this regard. In the article a detailed comparison of the Moscow version of this opera with its French redactions is carried out.

The purpose of this thesis is to comparatively study how Bulgakov's drama ‘Kabbalah of Hypocrites’ was staged during the thaw, and post-Soviet era. This study is an attempt to examine the essential meaning of staging a drama by studying how a drama text is transformed into a stage space through various directors and theaters at different times and performed. To this end, in this thesis, Efros's 1966 Renkom performance and two performances at the Moscow Art Theater, namely Yefremov's performance in 1988 and Tabakov's performance in 2001, were presented as 'the main character' compared and analyzed the shape of Molière. This thesis, which studies how a work was staged at different times, socio-political environments, and by different directors, suggests that it can be actively used in the methodology of studying dramas' staging.

In the coming year 2023, a round date is celebrated in Russian Oriental studies — 120 years since the birth of Isidor M. Lurie (1903–2023), a Leningrad Egyptologist, historian of law and public relations in ancient Egypt. In the article, based on materials from the archives of the Moscow Egyptologist Tatiana N. Savelyeva (Institute of Oriental Studies, Russian Academy of Sciences), the author reflects on the legacy and tragic fate of the scholar. The formation of Lurie as an academic began in the Leningrad Egyptological Circle. Subsequently, he went to work in the Hermitage, where he worked together with his wife Militsa E. Mathieu and prominent Soviet orientalists Nataliia D. Flitner, Igor M. Dyakonov, Boris B. Piotrovsky and others. Especially warm relations connected him with Moscow Egyptologists Tatiana N. Savelieva and Tatiana V. Stepugina. Lurie wrote many works on the problems of ancient Egyptian legislation, together with Militsa E. Mathieu, he published an anthology in ancient Egyptian cursive writing. Lurie openly argued with Vasily V. Struve, rejecting his theory of slavery in the ancient East, and took an active part in the publication of the first volume of World History (1955). The author dwells in detail on the last tragic stage of the scholar’s biography, when his monograph “Essays on Ancient Egyptian Law” was being prepared for publication. Circumstances developed in such a way that the Moscow Sector of the Institute of Oriental Studies became the supervising organization of said book. Lurie could not personally take part in the discussion, because at that time his health was seriously undermined. Nevertheless, by the beginning of June 1957, he managed to submit the final version of the manuscript. However, the sharply negative review received by his monograph crossed out the authors’ hopes and led to his premature death. In this regard, the author raises the question of the moral position of the scholar.

In the conditions of the international isolation of the Russian Government, at the initiative of the Soviet diplomacy in December 1922, a „disarmament conference” was held in Moscow, in which the states bordering Russia participated. Although it was invited, Romania did not respond to the invitation, because the Soviets refused to recognize the border on the Dniester. The tribune of the Moscow conference was used by Russian diplomacy for propaganda purposes. At the conference, the Romanian Government aimed to explore, through its ally Poland, the possibility of normalizing relations with the Russian Government, on the condition of recognizing its eastern border and the intention to give up the treasure seized in Moscow. During an exchange of views with Poland’s representative at the conference, Prince Radziwill, Deputy Commissar for Foreign Affairs M. M. Litvinov warned that Russia would demand a plebiscite in Bessarabia. A century later, a question remains, however, whether or not the Moscow conference was an occasion for a beginning of normalization of Russian-Romanian relations.

IntroductionThe psychological stress associated with the COVID-19 pandemic has a complex multifactorial nature.ObjectivesThe aim: to evaluate the level of stress during the COVID-19 pandemic in the Russian-speaking population with(-out) affective disorders in different cities of residence.MethodsThe data obtained from an online survey of 4803 Russian-speaking respondents (age over 18) from March 30 to May 18, 2020. The survey included social, demographic and the history of affective disorders data. The anxiety distress level was evaluated with the Psychological Stress Measure (PSM-25).ResultsIndividuals from sub-cohort of Russian cities with populations less than one million had higher stress levels (M=135.39) compared to Moscow (M=129.47; p=0.003) or St.-Petersburg (M=126.63; p<0.001). However, stress scores in respondents with a history of affective disorders correspond to the average stress level according to PSM-25. Respondents without affective disorders from St.-Petersburg reported lower stress levels (M=92.88) than respondents from Moscow (M=100.47; p<0.001) and Russian cities with less than one million population (M=98.4; p<0.001). Average stress scores from St.-Petersburg and other Russian cities show a low level of stress on PSM-25, which indicates psychological adaptation. Stress scores from Moscow have borderline values between low and medium levels.ConclusionsOur study showed that the city of residence and affective disorders status significantly affect stress levels in Russian population. These factors could be further used in individual psychological support strategies.

The article attempts to reconstruct and comprehensively analyze the ecclesiological conception of Mikhail Mikhailovich Tareev (1867-1934), Professor of Moral Theology at the Moscow Theological Academy at the beginning of the 20th century. The study consistently outlines the characteristic features of Tareev's theological approach, examines the features of his ecclesiology, proves the author's definition of his ecclesiology as kenotic. The specifics of the Tareev’s method is the division of the elements of the problem being analyzed into categories of absolute (internal) and relative (external). In other words, this problem appears in his extensive legacy as a problem of the correlation of content and form. Russian theologian understands the Church as a form of Christianity. Christianity as an inner, mystical, spiritual life has the life of the Church as its vestment. Christianity is possible only in the Church, and produces it. Being the realization of spiritual life in the world (“mir”), the Church must be holy and free from the world. At the same time, it is through the Church that the Christian spirit, or the spirit of Christ, influences the world, transforms it by Christ’s grace. According to Tareev, Christians represent a golden chain, on the one hand, connected with Christ and the saints, on the other hand, uniting all the living faithful. The Church is defined by the Russian theologian as a Society, a Kingdom, an Organism, a Union etc.; it is founded by Christ during His sufferings. Church’s purpose is to serve as an intermediary between the mystical life of the individual and the historical life of society. Due to the symmetry of Tareev's Christology and ecclesiology, the latter is defined as kenotic. The article ends with the designation of possible reasons for Tareev's formulation of his idea of the Church

In the present study, the layout structure of an n-MOSFET, which is vulnerable to radiation, was designed in a different way to enhance its tolerance to radiation. Radiation damage assessment was conducted using modeling and simulation (M&S) techniques before actual semiconductor process fabrication and radiation tests to verify its tolerance properties. Based on the M&S techniques, the role of each layer was determined to improve the radiation tolerance of semiconductors, and the layout design of an n-MOSFET with enhanced radiation tolerance was optimized. The optimized radiation-tolerant n-MOSFET design was implemented in the 0.18-um CMOS bulk process, and radiation exposure tests were conducted on the device. A cumulative radiation dose up to 2 Mrad(Si) was applied to verify its radiation-tolerant performance. Developing new devices using M&S techniques for radiation damage assessment allows reliable estimates of their electrical and radiation-tolerant properties to be obtained in advance of the actual manufacturing process, thereby minimizing development costs and time.

AbstractCurrently used methods to estimate surface pollutant emissions require a set of specific air-sampling surveys. Data from a network of ground-based sodars and a network of air-quality stations in Moscow, Russia, are used to estimate the emission rates of carbon monoxide (CO) and nitric oxide (NO). The sodar network, consisting of three “LATAN-3” Doppler sodars and three “MTP-5” microwave temperature profilers, is used to measure the vertical profiles of vertical and horizontal wind velocity, wind direction, and temperature, which are used to determine the average mixing-layer height. The network of ground-based air-quality stations, consisting of 17 automated stations distributed uniformly across Moscow, continuously measured the CO and NO concentrations. This study focuses on an anticyclonic episode of high surface pressure over Moscow during 30 July–1 August 2012. After sunrise, the solar-induced convection effectively moderated the pollutant levels in the lowest 100–200 m. After sunset, convective mixing stopped and the wind weakened, which allowed CO and NO to reach hazardous levels. With an assumption of an average mixing-layer height of 150 m, the resulting estimate of surface emission of CO is ~6 μg m−2 s−1, whereas that for NO is ~0.6 μg m−2 s−1.

The paper examines the urban originality of the poetic diptych by M. M. Shkapskaya “Peter and Paul Fortress” (1922). The author highlights the way the “Russian Bastille” is perceived in the literary tradition and in which of the reception lines the poetess fits herself. The architectural structure receives an individual author's interpretation, becoming the bride of Peter the Great in M.M. Shkapskaya`s creative world. Thus, one of the key motifs of the poetess's creativity (the motif of motherhood) develops. The study shows that the image of the Petropavlovsk bride originates in the poem “About Petersburg” (1915), written in Toulouse. The poetess likens St. Petersburg to a bride “with a smoky crumpled veil”. The unexpected feminization of the city, to which the literary tradition attributes a “masculine” character (in comparison with the “feminine” Moscow), does not receive further development in the poem, remaining unexplained. After the revolution, the image of bride reappears in Shkapskaya's poetry. Using the example of a specific locus of St. Petersburg, the poetess builds a historiosophical concept associated with Peter I. The Peter and Paul Fortress turns out to be the bride of the first Russian emperor, raising his children. Shkapskaya's poem should be considered as a response to the discussion of the early 1920s about the role of Peter I in the history of Russia. The fortress becomes a symbol of the historical existence of the city, which did not stop with the arrival of the Bolsheviks.

IntroductionSome attempts are being made to describe the mental health and well-being of the population in relation with the regional specifics in a particular area of the Russia, however, they are rare and local (limited to one region).ObjectivesThe current study aims to identify sociocultural mediation of mental well-being based on its measures in Russia’s regions with different ethno-cultural composition of population.MethodsThe study involved 210 men and 403 women aged 14 to 76 years (M = 26.9; SD = 13.7) from six regions of the Russian Federation: Moscow, St. Petersburg, Udmurtia, Sakha, Sverdlovsk and Kemerovo. The mental well-being of participants was assessed using the Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Wellbeing Scale (Tennant et al., 2006; Tennant et al., 2007).ResultsThe measures of mental well-being were different in the regions: Moscow (M=51.04; SD=8.03), St.-Petersburg (M=50.05; SD=5.78), Udmurtia (M=47.57; SD=9.50), Sakha (M=50.99; SD=8.47), Sverdlovsk (M=54.86; SD=8.43), Kemerovo (M=51.84; SD=7.51). Using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), it was found that there are significant differences in the assessment of psychological well-being between study participants from different regions (F = 6.692; p <0.001). Residents from the Sverdlovsk evaluate their mental well-being as significantly better than the ones from Moscow (MD=3.821; p=0.012), St.Petersburg (MD=4.812; p=0.023), the Udmurtia (MD=7.284; p <0.001) and the Sakha (MD=3.869; p=0.003).ConclusionsResidents from Russia’s regions with different ethno-cultural composition of population demonstrate some difference in mental well-being measures that may be caused by sociocultural factors. The article considers figurative and semantic functions of the Apollo - Dionysus mythologeme in M. Tsvetaeva’s cycle “Poems about Moscow”. The relevance of this problem is determined by the deficient extent of the knowledge between the Apollonian and Dionysian principles in the contexts of the works included in the cycle. In spite the fact that the most of literary critics consider the Dionysian code to be dominant for M. Tsvetaeva’s poetics, an analysis of a variety of poems from this cycle detects that Apollonian symbolism and associated with it motivic complexes play a primary role. This attitude conditioned to the scientific novelty of the article and its main position. This attitude explains the scientific novelty of the article and its main position. The conclusion is made that the Apollonian and the Dionysian are manifested in the literary worlds of the poems in various forms of relationships primarily as ambivalent principles of unity-opposites, illustrating the dialectical harmony of the cosmized reality in which the mind of a lyrical heroine is located.

Streszczenie:
The article is devoted to the semiotics and poetics of artistic geography of V. M. Shukshin. The comprehension of toposes in Shukshin’s texts is based on the archetypal division of space into “one’s own” (positive) and “someone else’s” (dangerous, profane). The space of Altai, endowed with signs of paradise, is the most semiotically loaded. Shukshin refers both the Urals and the Far East to the Siberian topos, scaling his own “map” of a man and being. The capitals - Moscow and Leningrad - are interpreted by Shukshin as a place of conquest and the realization of the hero’s dreams of freedom. Though, for those Shukshin’s characters who have not severed ties with their native land, the village, it is a place of spiritual hard labor and death. The ideal artistic topos is timed by Shukshin to medieval Russia and is embodied in such centers of the Russian world as Tambov, Kaluga, Voronezh and Vologda. The study of Shukshin’s geopoetics, his mythogeography allows us to reconstruct the specifics of the author’s image of the world.
