Streszczenie:
One of the iconographic trends that became especially articulated in the XII century is the strengthening of the role of typological logic in the selection and organization of subjects within the iconographic program of monuments of decorative and applied art, book illumination and stained glass. Interest in this kind of visual exegesis, based on the symbolic parallelism of the Old and New Testaments, generates experiments in the field of iconographic programs, which leads to the appearance in the late XII – early XIII centuries a number of monuments in which detailed typological cycles are used (the Klosterneuburg altar, typological stained glass windows of French and English cathedrals). The subject of the research in this article is the connection of the described iconographic trend with texts of a theological, theosophical and liturgical nature. Despite the fact that some of the mentioned texts have already been involved by researchers of Christian iconography for the interpretation of pictorial programs, a special study of the sources of "typological iconography" in the XII century has not been implemented yet. Based on the analysis of a number of texts and iconographic analysis of fine art monuments, an attempt is made to identify a group of sources that could be familiar to the compilers of iconographic programs. Among the monuments of fine art, works created in the Rheno-mosan region (as well as derivatives of this tradition) are of particular interest in the XII century. In this group of works of art (including processional and altar crosses, phylacteries, portable altars, works of stained glass and book illumination), searches in the field of typological iconography are consistently realized.

Streszczenie:
Th e Library of the University of Liege (Université de Liège. Biblio-thèque, Ms. 2613) and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London (Victoria and Albert Museum, Ms. 413) have two leaves created c. 1150–1170 and produced in the Meuse region. Although the question of the purpose of the leaves is under discussion, these two oeuvres of Romanesque book illumination have not yet received special scholarly attention. Th e leaves have a similar layout: each side contains two compositions based on stories from the Book of Genesis, and there are no inscriptions or biblical quotations. Th e Old Testament episodes included in the pictorial program of the leaves do not form a consistent narrative cycle. Th us, the scenes of the sacrifi ce by Cain and Abel and the murder of Abel by Cain in the leaf from the Victoria and Albert Museum are followed by an episode of the meeting of Abraham and Melchizedek. Th e leaf from Liège begins with the scene of the sacrifi ce of Isaac. Th e cycle does not contain a number of scenes with a fairly consistent iconographic tradition (for example, the story of Noah). Such narrative heterogeneity can be interpreted through the prism of the purpose of the pictorial series. Th e Sacrifi ce of Abel, the Gift s of Melchizedek and the Sacrifi ce of Isaac by Abraham are mentioned in the Eucharistic Canon of the Sacramentary of Pope Gelasius I and have been used in iconographic programs since the era of early Christianity as the main liturgical prototypes. Th e back of the leaf from the Library of the University of Liege contains another subject which alludes to the typological parallelism of the Testaments – the Blessing of Ephraim and Manasseh by Jacob. Th e designated subjects can be found in a number of contemporaneous works of decorative and applied arts and book miniatures of the Rhine-Meuse region, which are compiled on the basis of typological logic in the arrangement of stories. Th e selection of stories, as well as the stylistic and iconographic analy-sis of the range of oeuvres with typological iconography, suggests that the leaves could have been fragments of a model book and probably served as models in the process of the spreading of the compositional and iconographic techniques which were characteristic of the Rhine-Meuse region.

The works of painters Albert Bierstadt and Thomas Moran and photographers Carleton Watkins and William H. Jackson are often credited with having been instrumental in the creation of the Yosemite and Yellowstone National Parks. Rather than look for evidence of their influence on politicians – evidence which turns out to be flimsy and the stuff of legend more than reality –this dissertation aims to study how landscape representation between 1820 and 1890 progressively shaped American mentalities so that people came to admire the wilderness they had dreaded for a long time and to advocate or accept its preservation. In the first part we will deal with the evolution of the image of nature and art since the arrival of the first settlers and their shared destinies. In the second part, we will look at how artists were made into aesthetic and environmental pioneers, sent on a mission of exploration to study the elements of nature thoroughly and recreate the scenes they had observed. Then we will analyze the writings of some artists which show a precocious ecological sensitivity and the concrete actions of those who fought for the preservation of certain sites. Finally, in the third part, we will examine the technological or artistic innovations and the adaptation of European pictorial conventions that favored the visual appropriation of nature : the panorama and the stereography, elevated vision from a distance and telescopic precision, as well as its pastoralization by human, animal presence or by the union of the sublime and the beautiful

Streszczenie:
The focus of research in this comparative study lies on nominal address practices between doctors and older patients in German and Bosnian medical encounters. In this study we consider and compare the forms of address as well as identify their pragmatic differences by contrasting the Bosnian and German data. My research draws on interactional data consisting of 15 recorded conversations between Bosnian and German doctors and their elderly patients (65 and older). The data were examined and compared by using Conversation Analysis and Ethnographic Discourse Analysis. Our overall analysis shows a variety of differences between the data sets. The German data are marked by the exclusive use of the formal V form and the nominal form “Mrs./Mr. + surname” to address male and female patients. The Bosnian data are characterised by an overall high use of the kinship term “granny” to address the elderly female patients, as well as by a frequent use of the first name. Certain address practices of the doctors go beyond expressing politeness and/or friendliness, by contributing to face threatening actions such as criticism of the patients. The frequency and variety of such pragmatic routines differ and relate to socio-cultural norms of the institutional encounters in Bosnian and German society.

This paper provides a description of MOTAN, an inertial motion a measurement system that has been used to measure ice-induced global impact forces on ships since the year 2000. Measurements from three ships are used to show that MOTAN measures whole-ship motions reliably, and that those motions can be used to determine global impact forces on ships with reasonable accuracy. Data from the CCGS Terry Fox are used to show that MOTAN and two other, independent instrumentation systems measured impact forces that were in good agreement. Having demonstrated that MOTAN is a viable means of measuring global impact forces on ships, the discussion focuses upon more recent efforts to develop an autonomous MOTAN, i.e. a system that operates unattended during a ship’s entire operating season. To date, the autonomous MOTAN has been installed on two ships: CCGS Henry Larsen and the M/T Véga Desgagnés, with the objective of using the data to determine statistical information about the magnitude and frequency of global loads that a ship experiences during its operating season.

A primary factor for the development of military avionics systems is the requirement for a Modular Open System Architecture (MOSA). The US Department of Defense (DoD) is driving MOSA-compliant systems to achieve benefits in cost and flexibility within their procurements. MOSA definitions are examined in light of advances in computing disciplines that open the interfaces necessary for the aircraft operator to update and manage their fleet's Health Awareness Systems (HAS). Opening the relevant HAS interfaces via software configuration toolsets and MOSA building blocks avoids contracting for costly software changes and gives control of the update to the operator. Two business related factors are presented for consideration in developing the best way forward while using MOSA principles to guide development. These factors are (1) Intellectual Property (IP) and (2) the underlying investments companies make to develop IP. The need to routinely update the HAS to incorporate fleet lessons learned is inherent in the system's support. Updates may also reflect new methodologies that deliver the desired system control to the operator. The paper demonstrates a MOSA-compliant architecture via an example. Within the example, efficiencies are driven by an end-to-end Digital Thread that minimizes errors and rework while reducing the overall cost of change for the full platform lifecycle. The approach enables organic operator support, lowering the overall cost of aircraft operations. The design and support of the platform’s Health Awareness System benefits from the application of linked-automation.

The noise of diesel engines operating at low idle is an important noise evaluation criterion in both commercial vehicles and passenger cars. At low idle, a quiet, pleasant noise is required. Therefore, any unusual noises that occur at low idle represent a serious problem, and the noises must be prevented. This paper presents the characteristics of the moan noise, which is an unusual noise that radiates from the oilpan at low idle, and the mechanism by which the moan noises are generated in a diesel engine. In addition, a means of preventing the moan noises is discussed.

<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">MOSA (Modular Open System Approach) provides a framework for efficient and sustainable design of complex integrated systems. In domain of embedded technology, the MOSA as-is does a good job in identifying modular software and hardware frameworks required to establish a common baseline for generic open architecture. On the other hand, it does not cover physical aircraft integration, integration methodology and other constituent elements essential for design of robust interfaces and integrated embedded systems, which are owned by OEMs and their suppliers. The definition of open interfaces is a key constituent in definition of MOSA-compliant architectures. An efficient system integration lifecycle requires unambiguous interfacing among hosted functions. Open interfaces and Ethernet are core system integration technologies and should be integrated and configured with other software/hardware framework elements, to enable hard RT, real-time and soft-time application hosting. The system modularity and scalability required for incremental modernization and upgradeability over the lifecycle are at the stake, if the integrated embedded platform and design/configuration/integration methodology do not prevent unintended cross-functional interferences and ambiguous interface definition.</div><div class="htmlview paragraph">This paper outlines relevant system integration topics and challenges focusing on definition of key system interfaces, which can affect the system lifecycle and implementation of MOSA objectives. Streszczenie:
From a military operations perspective, the primary goals of the Modular Open Systems Approach (MOSA) [Ref. 1] are Affordable Life Cycle Cost (ALC), Maintain Capability Overmatch (MCO), and Faster-to-Field (FtF). Achieving these goals is directly related to the ability of the architecture to enable reuse and interoperability. The importance of this association is amplified with the assumption of a Family of System (FoS) acquisition where mission-level capabilities are needed by multiple products. Accordingly, the value of MOSA to architecture development in a FoS acquisition is directly related to the ability of the resulting architecture to enable reuse and interoperability of capabilities across the products that comprise the FoS. Not only is the resulting architecture a key enabler, but the governance of that architecture is also critical to long-term success for a FoS with products that are not on the exact same development timeline. Model-Based Engineering (MBE) within a digital thread offers structures and processes that assist both architecture development and governance while integrating the best features of Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) [Ref. 2], DevSecOps [Ref. 3, 4, 5, 6], open system standards, and Agile methodologies [Ref. 7]. However, the usage of such structures and processes needs to be done carefully to avoid situations in which the process itself can enable the intended or unintended consequence of sacrificing the benefits of MOSA while implementing the process. Without the right discipline, even developers with the best intentions for achieving MOSA benefits can end up building architectures, components, and build processes that inhibit the realization of MOSA benefits and complicate governance to an intractable level [Ref. 8]. Another concern is organizations that actually seek flaws in the development or governance processes and use those flaws to claim compliance with MOSA while at the same time embedding locks to guarantee future business contrary to MOSA goals. This paper will identify the discipline needed to achieve the benefits of MOSA in a FoS acquisition and recommendations for architecture development and life cycle governance. Building upon previous work [Ref. 9], this paper will present use cases and examples of pitfalls to avoid with suggestions on how to avoid them. The most significant recommendation provided in this paper is the development of a component-based architecture to be used as a basis to identify opportunities for reuse and interoperability across products and how to use it to establish a governance framework for an FoS-based acquisition. This paper describes the steps to derive a component-based architecture starting with a modeled reference architecture. Derivation follows the pattern endorsed by the US Government in their Comprehensive Architecture Strategy [Ref. 10] and includes process steps for iterative top-down decomposition and bottom-up re-composition. This paper presents study results on applying these principles against an example reference architecture. A digital map component is used as a representative example to highlight the pitfalls of reverse engineering a component architecture from an a priori system and a specific component implementation. Results will support the hypotheses that: (1) use of a reference architecture supports the creation of a baseline, point of departure, set of components aligned to an FoS product line, and (2) governance at the component level is best for a FoS acquisition.

This research concerns the packing problem frequently encountered in engineering design, where the volume and weight of a number of structural components such as valves and plumbing lines need to be minimized. Since in real applications the constraints are usually complex, the formulation of computationally tractable optimization becomes challenging. In this research, we propose a novel multiobjective simulated annealing (MOSA) approach towards the design optimization, i.e., optimizing the placement of valves under prescribed constraints to minimize the volume occupied, and the estimated plumbing line length. The objectives and constraints are described by analytical expressions. Our case study indicates that the new MOSA algorithm has relatively better performance towards 3D packing with strong constraints and the design can indeed be automated. The outcome of this research may benefit both existing manufacturing practice and future additive manufacturing.

Streszczenie:
Technology and competence from offshore structures, which were developed to serve in the harsh environment of the North Sea, have played a major role in developing technology for extreme fjord crossings in Norway. The Høgsfjord Project, and later the E39 Fjord Crossings Project, have taken advantage of the existing competence and experience from offshore structures. To a great extent, it has been a question of adapting offshore technology and combining it with advanced bridge technology to new types of structures. These new bridges are in many respects very different from offshore structures, mainly due to their length, slenderness, long resonance periods and complex dynamic behavior. Professor Torgeir Moan has been heavily involved in the technology development for the fjord crossings. First, in the Høgsfjord submerged floating tunnel project, and now in the Fjord Crossings project with the bold aim of making the E39 Coastal Highway along the west-coast of Norway free of ferries. He has always showed genuine interest in the challenges, and have always been willing to help identifying and solving the problems. His contribution has been vital to the outcome of the work.

Streszczenie:
Multi-objective optimization problems are frequently encountered in engineering analyses. Optimization techniques in practical applications are devised and evaluated mostly for specific problems, and thus may not be generally applicable when applications vary. In this study we formulate a probability matching based hyper-heuristic scheme, then propose four low-level heuristics which can work coherently with the single point search algorithm MOSA/R (Multi-Objective Simulated Annealing Algorithm based on Re-pick) towards multi-objective optimization problems of various properties, namely DTLZ and UF test instances. Making use of the domination amount, crowding distance and hypervolume calculations, the hyper-heuristic scheme could meet different optimization requirements. The approach developed (MOSA/R-HH) exhibits better and more robust performance compared to AMOSA, NSGA-II and MOEA/D as illustrated in the numerical tests. The outcome of this research may potentially benefit various design and manufacturing practices.

Streszczenie:
Modern aircraft employ an ever-growing array of sensors, probes, displays, and other high-integrity avionics. This has grown to the point where legacy networking technologies like MIL-STD-1553 and ARINC-429 are no longer sufficient. At the same time, a growing emphasis on Modular Open Standards Approach (MOSA) in defense acquisitions has moved toward favoring more open standards. This presents an opportunity to leverage ubiquitous, high-bandwidth, and flexible Ethernet into an avionics context. The US Army Future Vertical Lift (FVL) initiative presents a key opportunity to realize the advantages of Ethernet for avionics networking by using it as the basis for an avionics Digital Backbone. This paper will evaluate the Certification Readiness, Maturity, and MOSA-Conformance of the Ethernet technologies likely to be featured on FVL aircraft: IEEE 802.3 Best-Effort (BE) Ethernet, Time-Triggered Ethernet (TTE), and IEEE 802.1 Time Sensitive Networking (TSN). All the listed technologies are open Ethernet standards, allowing the system architect to deploy them as needed based on the specific use case and program requirements. This evaluation assesses these three Ethernet technologies on aspects necessary to safely manage flight-critical data over a real-time network, including native fault tolerance, determinism, software dependency, and certifiability. The paper also assesses the technological maturity of each technology in relation to the planned timeline for FVL and evaluates how evolution of the technologies could impact MOSA-conformance. This paper will ultimately recommend a mixed network of a Time-Triggered Ethernet Digital Backbone for high-criticality Air Vehicle System traffic with Best-Effort Ethernet or Time-Sensitive Networking for lower-criticality Mission System traffic.

Streszczenie:
The MIMI project was initiated by the DSI in partnership with the South African Local Government Association (SALGA), the HSRC and UKZN. The purpose of this initiative was to develop an innovative tool capable of assessing and measuring the innovation landscape in municipalities, thus enabling municipalities to adopt innovative practices to improve service delivery. The outcome of the implementation testing, based on the participation of 22 municipalities, demonstrated the value and the capacity of MIMI to produce innovation maturity scores for municipalities. The digital assessment tool looked at how a municipality, as an organisation, responds to science, technology and innovation (STI) linked to service delivery, and the innovation capabilities and readiness of the municipality and the officials themselves. The tool is also designed to recommend areas of improvements in adopting innovative practices and nurturing an innovation mindset for impactful municipal service delivery. The plan going forward is to conduct learning forums to train municipal officials on how to use the MIMI digital platform, inform them about the nationwide implementation rollout plan and support municipal officials to engage in interactive and shared learnings to allow them to move to higher innovation maturity levels. The virtual launch featured a keynote address by the DSI Director-General, Dr Phil Mjwara; Prof Mehmet Akif Demircioglu from the National University of Singapore gave an international perspective on innovation measurements in the public sector; and messages of support were received from MIMI partners, delivered by Prof Mosa Moshabela, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (DVC) of Research at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) and Prof Leickness Simbayi, Acting CEO of the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC). It attracted over 200 attendees from municipalities, government, business and private sector stakeholders, academics, policymakers and the international audience. @ASSAf_Official; @dsigovza; #MIMI_Launch; #IID
