Streszczenie:
This article describes the properties of molecular nanowires as electrical conductors. It begins by defining a molecular nanowire and describing a specific example of a molecular nanowire, along with the concept of molecular nanowire self-assembly. It then considers how molecular nanowires are realized in the laboratory as well as the relationships between these methodologies, the systems that are produced and some experiments being performed on them. It also looks at the different kinds of molecules, electrodes and linkers out of which molecular nanowires are being or may be constructed; the Landauer approach to electrical conduction in molecular nanowires; the principles and limitations of ab-initio and semi-empirical modelling of molecular nanowires in the context of electrical conduction; and four specific experimental systems and the extent to which their observed behavior has been understood theoretically. The article concludes with a summary of key issues for the future development of the field.

Streszczenie:
Axonal excitability techniques were developed to assess axonal resting membrane potential and ion channel function in vivo, and thereby provide greater molecular understanding of the activity of voltage gated ion channels and ion pumps underlying nerve and membrane function. Axonal excitability studies provide complimentary information to conventional nerve conduction studies, using submaximal stimuli to examine the properties underlying the excitability of the axon. Such techniques have been developed both as a research technique to examine disease pathophysiology and as a clinical investigation technique. This chapter provides an overview of axonal excitability techniques, addressing the role of key ion channels and pumps in membrane function and highlighting examples of clinical case studies, where such techniques have been utilized, including motor neuronopathies, tracking progression of chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy, and assessing treatment response in chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy.

Streszczenie:
This article describes quasi-ballistic electron transport in atomic wires. It begins with a review of experiments on the conduction properties for single metal atoms. Nearly all the information on the properties of such nanocontacts should be extracted from the current and voltage only. Nevertheless, a wide range of techniques has been developed to obtain detailed information. The article proceeds by considering various experimental techniques for characterizing single-atom contacts, along with their application for the study of conducting chains of individual metal atoms and for metal–molecule–metal junctions. Using metallic point contacts and molecular junctions that are of atomic size, it demonstrates that the transport of electrons can be quasi-ballistic and the deviations from perfect transmission can be quantified and interpreted.

Streszczenie:
This chapter covers Boltzmann’s writings about the Boltzmann equation and the H theorem in the period 1872–1875, through which he succeeded in deriving the irreversible evolution of the distribution of molecular velocities in a dilute gas toward Maxwell’s distribution. Boltzmann also used his equation to improve on Maxwell’s theory of transport phenomena (viscosity, diffusion, and heat conduction). The bulky memoir of 1872 and the eponymous equation probably are Boltzmann’s most famous achievements. Despite the now often obsolete ways of demonstration, despite the lengthiness of the arguments, and despite hidden difficulties in the foundations, Boltzmann there displayed his constructive skills at their best.

Streszczenie:
This article describes the conceptual framework that provides a unified description for all kinds of nanoelectronic devices covering different transport regimes from the diffusive to the ballistic limit, including molecular conductors, carbon nanotubes, and silicon transistors. More specifically, it presents a unified bottom-up viewpoint to the subject of electrical conduction of particular relevance to nanoelectronic devices and highlights the important role played by contacts. It also discusses the basic inputs that define the NEGF–Landauer model, along with its relevant equations, including those that provide a general approach to the problem of quantum transport. A few examples are given to illustrate how these equations are applied.

Streszczenie:
This article reviews recent advances towards the development of a truly atomistic time-dependent theory for spin-dynamics. The focus is on the s-d tight-binding model [where conduction electrons (s) are exchange-coupled to a number of classical spins (d)], including electrostatic corrections at the Hartree level, as the underlying electronic structure theory. In particular, the article considers one-dimensional (1D) magnetic atomic wires and their electronic structure, described by means of the s-d model. The discussion begins with an overview of the model spin Hamiltonian, followed by molecular-dynamics simulations of spin-wave dispersion in a s-d monoatomic chain and spin impurities in a non-magnetic chain. The current-induced motion in a magnetic domain wall (DW) is also explored, along with how an electric current can affect the magnetization landscape of a magnetic nano-object. The article concludes with an assessment of spin-motive force, and especially whether a driven magnetization dynamics can generate an electrical signal.
