Streszczenie:
I investigate persistent currents and the sign of these currents in a low-field limit (ϕ→0) for n-fold twisted Moebius strips threaded by a slowly varying magnetic flux ϕ and describe the effects of the total number of electrons Ne, chemical potential μ, number of twists n, and disorder on these quantities. Transverse hopping strength (v⊥) of the electrons plays an important role in the periodicity of the persistent current. It is observed that for Moebius strips with an odd number of twists the current shows ϕ0/2 flux-quantum periodicity only when v⊥=0, but if the electrons are allowed to hop along the transverse direction, then current shows ϕ0 flux periodicity for both odd- and even-fold twisted Moebius strips. The sign of the low-field currents also has strong dependence on the number of twists n. For zero transverse hopping strength (v⊥ = 0) the sign of the currents can be predicted exactly in odd-fold twisted Moebius strips that are characterized by fixed Ne only. For impurity free systems, the current shows only diamagnetic sign irrespective of Ne, i.e., whether the systems contain odd or even Ne. In the presence of impurity, the current shows diamagnetic and paramagnetic sign, respectively, for the systems with odd and even Ne. On the other hand, for non-zero transverse hopping strength (v⊥≠0), the sign of the low-field currents cannot be predicted exactly. Then it strongly depends on Ne, μ, and the specific realization of disordered configurations.

Streszczenie:
The taxonomy of flattened Moebius strips (FMS) is reexamined in order to systematize the basis for its development. An FMS is broadly characterized by its twist and its direction of traverse. All values of twist can be realized by combining elementary FMS configurations in a process called fusion but the result is degenerate; a multiplicity of configurations can exist with the same value of twist. The development of degeneracy is discussed in terms of several structural factors and two principles, conservation of twist and continuity of traverse. The principles implicate a corresponding pair of constructs, a process of symbolic convolution, and the inner product of symbolic vectors. Combining constructs and structural factors leads to a systematically developed taxonomy in terms of twist categories assembled from permutation groups. Taxonomical structure is also graphically revealed by the geometry of an expository edifice that validates the convolution process while displaying the products of fusion. A formulation that combines some of the algebraic precepts of Quantum Mechanics with the primitive combinatorics and degeneracies inherent to the FMS genus is developed. The potential for further investigation and application is also discussed. An appendix outlines the planar extension of the fusion concept and another summarizes a related application of convolution.

Streszczenie:
Apart from their generic relationship to knots and their application to particle physics [1], flattened Moebius strips (FMS) are of intrinsic interest as elements of a genus with specific rules of combination and a unique taxonomy. Here, FMS taxonomy is developed in detail from combinatorial and lexicographic points of view which include notions of degeneracy, completeness and excited states. The results are compared to the standard, spin-parameterized, abstract hierarchy derived by group-theoretic arguments as the direct product of vector spin spaces [2]. A review of the notion of excited states then leads to a new and different model of Beta decay that employs only fusion and fission. There is additional discussion of the relationship between twist and charge and an operator/tensor formulation of the fusion and fission of basic FMS units. Associating a Hopf algebra to FMS operations as a step toward a topological quantum field theory is also investigated. The notion of spinor/twistor networks is seen to emerge from a consideration of FMS configurations for higher values of twist and the introduction of a mode dual to the canonical FMS configuration. The last section discusses the connection of the MS genus to fiber bundle/gauge theory, the concept of spin, and the Dirac equation of the electron.

Streszczenie:
Drawing on teaching sessions that I conducted last year, alongside my own practice-based doctoral research in narrative or cinematic VR (CVR) predicated on the Deleuzian notion of immanence, I propose that the CVR screenplay is better understood as a moebius strip than a linear narrative; a tale that turns around on itself. But far from being unorientable like its mathematical paradigm, the moebius narrative can be both oriented and scripted, as I hope to illustrate using student work as well as my own script iterations. Taking it to be both a model and a metaphor, this article explores how a moebius narrative can be designed ‐ and why design thinking is more suitable for this process than traditional screenwriting methods. While still an understanding-in-progress, I find this conceptual framework useful for both practice and pedagogy. This article hopes additionally, therefore, to make a case for pedagogy as a research method in its own right, especially in the context of practice-based research.

This paper is mainly concerned with the existence, stability, and bifurcations of periodic solutions of a certain scalar impulsive differential equations on Moebius stripe. Some sufficient conditions are obtained to ensure the existence and stability of one-side periodic orbit and two-side periodic orbit of impulsive differential equations on Moebius stripe by employing displacement functions. Furthermore, double-periodic bifurcation is also studied by using Poincaré map.

The work is devoted to the study of the deformation of one-sided surfaces. Let a normal vector be drawn along a closed curve on the surface. If, when returning to the original point, the direction of the normal coincides with the original direction of the normal, then the surface is called two-sided. Otherwise, we have a one-sided surface. Unilateral surfaces include: crossed cap, Roman surface, Boya surface, Klein bottle. Roman surface, Boya surface and crossed hood are a model of the projective plane. It is proved that if the surface is a model of a Moebius strip, of a Klein bottle, of projective plane, then the surface deformation is a Moebius strip model, a Klein bottle model, projective plane model respectively. Using a mathematical package, graphs are built the surfaces under consideration.

Dispensing with semiological terms inappropriately applied to comics, this article uses the concept of the ‘cube-panel’ to show that the comics panel is indissociable from drawing itself. There is no ‘code’, only drawing. The cube-panel is exemplified in Inside Moebius. Rather than sampling from a wider, out-of-frame space, it represents a retreat from that space, a prison or refuge, both suggestive of an inner life. The title promises just such a revelation, but it is in the nature of a Moebius strip, and of a graphic representation of the author’s self, for that inside to be inseparable from an outside. Two examples of the inside–outside pairing recur throughout: the desert, representing a creative void, and the bunker, in which the artist externalises himself.

We show that the continuity properties of a stable plane are automatically satisfied if we have a linear space with point set a Moebius strip, provided that the lines are closed subsets homeomorphic to the real line or to the circle. In other words, existence of a unique line joining two distinct points implies continuity of join and intersection. For linear spaces with an open disk as point set, the same result was proved by Skornyakov.

The basic arguments for a mental image model of thought are based on neuropsychological evidence. France (2000) found that the same brain regions are activated during both mental representation and actual perception, while Bishiah (1993) found that brain traumas that affected perception, also affected the ability to create mental images. Pylyshyn(2003) on the other hand, argues that all mental images are guided by ‘’cognitive penetrability’’, thus on their very basis, are manipulated by certain propositional elements. Given this difficulty, Kargopoulos (2009) hinted towards further research, featuring shapes and solid objects, for which subjects have no priorextensive knowledge. This would force subjects to use non-semantic strategies of representation, meaning mental imagery. Hinton’s (1979) cube problem conforms to these requirements. Hinton’s problem aligns with the idea that spatial tasks (especially tasks with cubes that change layout) are guided by propositional cues (our knowledge about squares) and supports Pylyshyn’s position. Using one of the simplest objects, a cube, Hinton showed that as soon as this shape changes its mental arrangement in space, even suspicious -as to the nature of the experiment- participants will make mistakes that are not present when they manipulate a mental image of the cube sitting on its typicalarray. Aim: Our goal was to investigate the relationship between spatio-visual skill and the ability for mental partitioning in healthy subjects. Methodology: We used 2 groups (344 participants) a control and an experimental one. In the control group, we presented a Moebius’ strip, in the experimental group, we presented the same Moebius’ strip and asked them to mentally represent it. All participants asked to mentally partition the strip. Results: Of the 344 participants, only 31 managed to give the correct number of vertices in space. Though people had a hard time manipulating the cube’s mental image, their success rates were much higher for the Hinton 1 task in which propositional representation was more accessible. Only 9 of the 344 participants could find the correct answer for the Moebius strip task in which mental manipulation of the strip image was impossible. Conclusions: We come to the conclusion that the relationship between ‘’seeing’’ and ‘’knowing’’ is more complex, not just on the level of the mental image level but also on the level of perception. Our findings bring back to the scientific background the idea that the mind’s selective attention to previous experience and cognitive schemas will decidedly affect human thought.

Writing qualitative research texts often involves the acknowledgement of the researcher being imbued in the systems of meaning that he or she is studying. This provides a background for incitement to reflexivity, i.e. how one’s own life history and broader cultural context is etched in epistemological and ontological assumptions about the object. This article studies the reflexive style of writing in Michel Foucault’s archaeology of the human sciences, which constantly problematises its own assumptions about studying discourses. His style is described with the analogy of a Moebius strip, highlighting the way the ‘outside’ history of the human sciences turns into the ‘inside’ conditions of possibility for analysing discursive formations in the history of educational research.

Florence Guignard, The maternal and the féminin components : two spaces of psychic life. The author proposes two metaphorical models: the primary maternal, which contains the primary drive conflict, and the primary feminine, containing the constitution of desire. These two models represent an aspect of psychic space and designate two areas that both constitute and are constituted by the first intrapsychic conflicts. Starting with Freud, the author then examines the contributions of other authors (Bion, Fain, Meltzer, Rank, etc.) that support her concept of an intimate relationship based on identifications as well as object relations. Key-words : Primary drive conflict, Constitution of desire, Masochism-feminity = Moebius strip.

Abstract The article departs from the Teilhardean opposition of the inside (le dedans) and the outside (le dehors), notions of reflection and self-enclosure (enroulement sur lui-même), and an experimental law of recurrence (une loi expérimentale de recurrence). The author supplements them with his own apparatus of simplex-complex transformations as an epistemic principle and a set of related practices. The article starts with quantum emergence, forging its inside and outside by an interface and an alternative way to represent it as Diracean membrane, branes of the string theory, and the eigenform. The interface instrumentality for operating the inside and outside of the quantum allows their structured totality to enact agency potential. Simplex-complex transformations allow to represent an evolutionary series of agency transformations as modules of a single model up to a developed human self. The article discusses the recurrence, enclosure, and other trickeries of emergence as well as their representation with the help of cognitive metaphors likme Ouroboros or mathematical formalisms like the Moebius strip. It proceeds to chemical catalysis and autocatalysis, further to emergence of autopoiesis, and finally to biogenesis. Forms of life internalize environmental productive factor (Umwelt) by duplication, recursion, enclosing, folding, etc. to evolve a series of codes, making up integral genetic agency and genome as its key vehicle. The article considers organismic symbiosis and respective autocatalytic recursions, addresses the emergence of signal systems and cognition, which is parallel to and duplicating neural processes. It discusses primary cognitive abilities and their further autocatalytic transformations into a range of more advanced capabilities, along with the emergence of higher levelhigher-level signal systems. Finally, it ends up by discussing anthropogenesis and stepwise emergence and advancement of human language and thought in a series of internalizations of communicative contexts (frames, typical communicative settings, mementoes and typical remembrances, etc.) into codes of the first, second, and further orders.

Abstract The Moebius topology (twisted, single-sided strip) is intriguing because of its structural elegance and distinct properties. Here we report the generation of block copolymer Moebius strips via a fast self-assembly of chiral block copolymer polystyrene-block-poly(D-lactide acid) (PS-b-PDLA) in tetrahydrofuran/water mixed solvents. The Moebius strip is formed by morphological evolution from large compound micelle (LCM) to spindle-like micelle (SLM) and then to toroid with a 180° twist along the ring. Mechanism insight reveals that a subtle balance of crystallization of PDLA and microphase separation between PS and PDLA chains dominates the formation of Moebius strips. An intriguing helix-helix transition occurs during the chiral transfer from microphase to assemblies, which is driven by relaxation of the internal stress within SLM related to orientated stretching of PS chains. Mesoporous chiral channels can be generated within Moebius strips after removal of PDLA, which are interesting in chiral recognition, separation and asymmetric catalysis.

Our findings bring back to the scientific background the idea that the mind’s selective attention to previous experience and cognitive schemas will decidedly affect human thought

Streszczenie:
The basic arguments for a mental image model of thought are based on neuropsychological evidence. Farah [1] found that the same brain regions are activated during both mental representation and actual perception, while Bishiah [2] found that brain traumas that affected perception, also affected the ability to create mental images. Pylyshyn [3] on the other hand, argues that all mental images are guided by ‘’cognitive penetrability’’, thus on their very basis, are manipulated by certain propositional elements. Given this difficulty, Kargopoulos [4] hinted towards further research, featuring shapes and solid objects, for which subjects have no prior extensive knowledge. This would force subjects to use non-semantic strategies of representation, meaning mental imagery. Hinton’s [5] cube problem conforms to these requirements. Hinton’s problem aligns with the idea that spatial tasks (especially tasks with cubes that change layout) are guided by propositional cues (our knowledge about squares) and supports Pylyshyn’s position. Using one of the simplest objects, a cube, Hinton showed that as soon as this shape changes its mental arrangement in space, even suspicious -as to the nature of the experiment- participants will make mistakes that are not present when they manipulate a mental image of the cube sitting on its typical array. This article maps the interconnections between two emergent resource frontiers in Ireland: wind and data. Adding to literature about extraction and extractivism, we account for how these expanded extractive frontiers are mobilised within self-sustaining and automated formations. In Ireland, digital infrastructures such as data centres are developed by multinational tech companies to avail of a naturally cool climate and business environment friendly to their investment, part of a wider extractive system by which data are made valuable for their expansive operations. Wind farms similarly make use of Ireland’s climate to generate energy, often used to power digital infrastructures, and are increasingly embedded within ‘smart’ energy and data systems. Wind and data are seen discretely as ‘abundant’ resources, their infrastructures built on terra or (offshore) mare nullius, and their operations ‘green’. However, their infrastructures are entangled with non-renewable energy systems and tax evasive capital, and built across existing communities and environments through policy, planning logics and increasingly automated methods of maintenance and optimisation. Through what we call ‘the moebius strip of wind/data’, wind and data infrastructures are increasingly formidable in dictating our energy futures. In this article, we articulate how they are connected and how we can disentangle them, especially in their operation across urban and rural geographies.

Streszczenie:
Abstract In this work we deal with parametric inverse problems, which consist in recovering a finite number of parameters describing the structure of an unknown object, from indirect measurements. State-of-the-art methods for approximating a regularizing inverse operator by using a dataset of input-output pairs of the forward model rely on deep learning techniques. In these approaches, a neural network is trained to predict he value of the sought parameters directly from the data. In this paper, we show that these methods provide suboptimal results when a regularizing inverse operator is discontinuous with respect to the Euclidean topology. Hence, we propose a two-step strategy for approximating it by means of a neural network, which works under general topological conditions. First, we embed the parameters into a subspace of a low-dimensional Euclidean space; second, we use a neural network to approximate a homeomorphism between the subspace and the image of the parameter space through the forward operator. The parameters are then retrieved by applying the inverse of the embedding to the network predictions. The results are shown for the problem of X-ray imaging of solar flares with data from the Spectrometer/Telescope for Imaging X-rays. In this case, the parameter space is homeomorphic to a Moebius strip. Our simulation studies show that the use of a neural network for predicting the parameters directly from the data yields systematic errors due to the non-Euclidean topology of the parameter space. The proposed strategy overcomes the discontinuity issues and furnishes stable and accurate reconstructions.

Future directions are often shaped by quirks of necessity or chance: the groundbreaking iconoclast that is Moebius’s Garage hermétique, with its rejection of conventional narrative or character coherence, came as a result of the author having forgotten previous scripts from one week to the next; Rodolphe Töpffer, so often credited for having invented the modern comic strip, initially saw himself as producing no more than scribblings for the entertainment of his pupils; one of the earliest of text/image forms, the emblem, may well be the result of Augsburg printer, Heinrich Steiner, adding images in 1531 to Andrea Alciato’s epigrams, a far cry from the composed intertwining of Francesco Colonna’s Hypnerotomachia Poliphili of 1499. Mirroring such processes in our own way, European Comic Art is embarking on a new direction, as we turn to issues that can reflect the diversity of comic art rather than being necessarily united by a single theme. It is a logical direction, but also one shaped by chance and necessity, that of the diversity of high-quality submissions that we have been delighted to receive.
