Streszczenie:
The modular modular architecture is currently actively used in construction since it has many advantages over traditional construction. This type of design simplifies and speeds up the process of creating not only social housing, but also campuses and hospitals when there is an epidemic and you need to quickly provide patients with wards, or get out of the housing crisis during the economic crisis. In addition to being practical, it is much cheaper and more environmentally friendly. This article provides examples of the use of modules in construction and architecture to argue the relevance and need to use modular architecture and develop it. The use of the technology of modular formation of architectural objects can solve urgent problems in the modern world: overcoming the consequences of natural disasters, hostilities, the formation of social and niche specialized housing. These examples are not innovations that are unattainable or not scalable for technological reasons. The highlighted issue only shows the need to disseminate these solutions in practice.

Housing must be flexible to the circumstances growing families face as their needs change during the family lifecycle. The purpose of this paper is to gather a preliminary understanding of growing families' needs and evaluate how modular off-site manufactured construction could effectively answer those needs. Despite the large amount of research that has gone into off-site manufactured buildings, there is little research that has explored its suitability as a flexible housing typology for growing families. The pilot presented in this paper investigates the specific context of Brisbane, Australia; qualitative data have been gathered from growing families in this city and combined with established theory on flexible building to develop a preliminary understanding of how modular off-site manufactured construction could perform in meeting flexibility requirements in comparison to a traditional lightweight timber framed construction. Findings highlight how the ability to modify a dwelling is a fundamental feature for growing families; a number of other advantages in flexibility were found in modular off-site manufacture and recommendations made to improve this construction typology.

Streszczenie:
Modular construction, which involves factory-based modular unit manufacturing followed by installation at a construction site, has been recognized as one of the sustainable construction methods. Its advantages are known to be implemented through (1) standardized design, (2) standardized production method, and (3) large-scale development (mass production system). These three conditions are basic requirements for modular construction market expansion, but it is difficult to define that these conditions are a prerequisite for judging whether modular construction applied or not. Nevertheless, public development companies in regions or countries where modular construction has just begun thought that modular construction should meet all three conditions that are suitable for applying public construction projects. This is because it is difficult to compare conventional construction projects with similar conditions to modular construction projects. This paper analyzes the cost and duration data of three small-scale public construction rental housing (PCRH) projects involving modular construction in Korea. These cases presented herein include a public college student dormitory, public low-rise rental housing, and public mid-rise rental housing in small-scale development projects. Those were applied not standardized design (common design and regulation), but were reflected in each project’s demands (different design and regulation). To compare it, this paper analyzed 91 public housing provision projects’ construction data from 2011 to 2017 from one of the public rental housing provision companies in Korea. Among them, 19 small-scale public rental housing data were extracted for comparing with modular construction project data. The results show that, even if not standardized, the design and production process, and modular construction durations, were more effective—but costs were similar or expensive. Based on the conclusion drawn from three cases, this paper presents important considerations for the application of modular construction in other small-scale public construction rental housing projects from the perspective of public development companies.

Streszczenie:
With many natural disasters such as earthquakes, cyclones, bushfires and tsunamis destroying human habitats around the world, post-disaster housing reconstruction has become a critical topic. The current practice of post-disaster reconstruction consists of various approaches that carry affected homeowners from temporary shelters to permanent housing. While temporary shelters may be provided within a matter of days as immediate disaster relief, permanent housing can take years to complete. However, time is critical, as affected communities will need to restore their livelihoods as soon as possible. Prefabricated modular construction has the potential to drastically improve the time taken to provide permanent housing. Due to this time-efficiency, which is an inherent characteristic of modular construction, it can be a desirable strategy for post-disaster housing reconstruction. This paper discusses how prefabricated modular structures can provide a more time-efficient solution by analysing several present-day examples taken from published post-disaster housing reconstruction processes that have been carried out in different parts of the world. It also evaluates how other features of modular construction, such as ease of decommissioning and reusability, can add value to post-disaster reconstruction processes and organisations that contribute to the planning, design and construction stages of the reconstruction process. The suitability of modular construction will also be discussed in the context of the guidelines and best practice guides for post-disaster housing reconstruction published by international organisations. Through this analysis and discussion, it is concluded that prefabricated modular structures are a highly desirable time-efficient solution to post-disaster housing reconstruction.

Streszczenie:
An investigation was conducted into temporary modular housing for use in disaster areas to assess the feasibility of energy independence. Flexible modular units have been proposed as a temporary housing solution in disaster areas, as they can be deployed in combination with energy units across a wide range of environments. A dynamic energy simulation was used to examine the heating/cooling requirements and the potential photovoltaic power generation of such modular housing in an East Asian climate. This was used to assess the potential for energy independence. The building performance was analyzed based on measurements of airtightness, insulation performance, and thermal bridge phenomena taken from mock-up modular housing. According to the wall assembly method, it was confirmed that the airtightness performance was poor. Further investigations explored the possibility of reducing the annual heating/cooling loads by improving the airtightness, which would contribute to greater energy independence. In general, the specific housing needs of different victim groups can easily be satisfied through the application of different modular unit combinations.

Streszczenie:
In modular construction—a type of industrialized construction—production planning is very important, as it is closely related to the project’s duration, quality, and sustainability. The constraints (production area, delivery due date) often differ for each project, yet production planning in modular construction has failed to change with the project characteristics. As a result, bottlenecks and construction delays are common problems seen in modular construction, which, in turn, decreases the production ratio, causing the production to be inefficient. To this end, this paper applied a prefabricated component in the modular production process. The paper developed a process analysis model considering constraint factors (production period, production area) to derive the optimal configuration of the prefabricated components in various alternatives. The developed analysis model was then applied to a virtual case to analyze the productivity improvement and select the optimal process. The optimal production process was derived by simulating the possible production planning within a limited production area and production timeline. The result of a simulation indicates that the production period has been halved by optimizing the process. Furthermore, by applying prefabricated components, the production efficiency was further increased because the existing linear production process’s bottleneck disappeared. The model is deemed to have the potential to optimize various production methods across production facilities or modular factories that simultaneously perform multiple projects.

Streszczenie:
The use of modular construction systems for residential purposes currently represents a very small proportion of all housing construction. The focus of these systems is on niche markets typified as cheap alternatives, homeowner involvement in construction or adaptations to construction constraints (build time availability, site access, etc.). Governments, regulatory bodies and industrial members are progressively moving towards increased environmentally sustainable practice. This progression is evidenced by the development of design and construction rating tools and the introduction of statutes and regulations governing construction and design. This work investigates the improvement of residential construction practice in terms of environmental sustainability outcomes through the use of modular housing systems. Two key aspects of environmental sustainability identified are embodied energy and material waste reduction. A modular system has been investigated because methods and procedures that directly relate to these two areas are well addressed by such systems. In order to validate the potential of modular systems in this environmental regard, three main areas have been addressed. The first is the ability for modular systems to generate the type of floor plans currently offered by Australian high-volume builders. Second, the environmental improvement potential offered by modular systems is addressed. Lastly are the issues of structural performance and the means of the tailoring of prefabricated modular systems to residential construction standards. Through the treatment of these three areas, potential benefits of modular systems are identified, with future work necessary to implement such benefits highlighted. The need for such improvements is noted, and a framework for evaluating future developments in this area of research is presented.

Undertaking a work of architecture utilizing modular construction is, in most cases, a design project dominated, or at least driven by, the most technical aspects of architecture. Technical aspects which haven't been completely figured out yet. Rather than making the decision to use a pre-determined structural system in the project before going through the design process, my thesis offers an example of how a more traditional and balanced approach can improve resulting buildings. In addition, rather than allowing the technology of the module to create the form of the building, show how a thorough study of program and form can influence the structure, even in an endeavor which usually requires such hard-nosed engineering.

The Brazilian housing deficit is a problem that primarily affects the poorest part of the population. Its solution is not only to implement huge housing programs or to develop building systems, but also to evaluate these actions through the analysis of its constructability. Lower cost construction systems, tailored to local realities which can ensure to families con fort, safety and quality of life are essential when it comes to design and build social housing - SH (HIS on Portuguese). This paper, therefore, presents the development process of a modular masonry for ceramic blocks, since its conception and design until its implementation in a constructive prototype and analyses the same from the standpoint of constructability. Thus, the study uses a methodology of intensive recording and monitoring of the system's project and implementation phases. It performs a critical analysis of them, investigating, qualitatively, the constructability of the system and proposing improvements for it to reach a higher integrat ion level between projectual and executive phases. As a result, there is a systematic for studying the constructability applicable to other building systems, with results that contribute to continuous improvement on build of social housing

Streszczenie:
Modular housing is an important segment of the factory-built housing industry, in the Mid-Atlantic. In 1998, a study was conducted to assess the structural needs and requirements of this industry. This study addressed three questions. (1) What is the current and future state of the industry? (2) What structural material trends are present between 1992 - 2000? (3) What opportunities exist for product substitution and development of new structural materials? This study found that the modular housing industry in the Mid-Atlantic region is growing. The greatest barrier to market expansion is transportation costs. Expansion is expected in the South and Midwest regions of the US. Most competition comes from site-built and manufactured homebuilders. To stay competitive, respondents plan to increase customization options and home size. The need for cost effective, quality structural materials is a growing concern. Softwood dimensional lumber has been decreasing since 1992 and is expected continue to decrease through 2000. Decreases are due to design changes and quality concerns. The use of engineered lumber has increased in order to compensate for decreases in dimensional lumber necessary to meet the structural needs of the industry. Using factor analysis and perceptual mapping techniques, dimensional lumber was not perceived to be as suited for structural building applications as engineered lumber. However, respondents felt that engineered lumber tended to be more expensive. Perceptual mapping also identified gaps between the ideal needs of building applications and the ability of current materials to meet those needs. Opportunities for new product development exist where gaps occurred.

The present research is part of a construction project of a modular rural housing with sustainable installations based on the reality of the Province of Huancabamba, district of Sondorillo, Piura. The contribution of this work is based on the treatment of reliable and existing data from the place under study to determine the supply of renewable resources of greater predominance, such as solar, wind and rainwater resources; with the purpose of carrying out the design of the electrical and sanitary installations of the modular housing proposed taking into account the reality of their needs that they demand. The present thesis was carried out based on the analysis methodology with information from different sources such as research at ends. With this, the treatment and analysis of the existing data is done taking as a base data provided in the official page of NASA, SENAMHI and the ANA. The estimation of global solar energy was determined by the Bristow - Campbell method, resulting in a profitable value of 4.98 kW/m2. The average value of wind speed of the place was made by the distribution of Weilbull, resulting in a value of 6.32 m/s at a height of 6 m. Also, the rainwater collection proposal is developed to be derived only to the toilet of the house where it will be treated by means of a biodigester of 600 L of capacity, obtaining with it a better quality of the hygienic service for the resident in the rural area. The results were used to design the electrical and sanitary installations, where it was determined that by means of the electrical demand of the house it is necessary to have only one solar panel of 150 Wp to supply all the electrical appliances. Likewise, it is evident that the wind turbine can supply up to 11 homes with the calculated electrical demand. So it is concluded that despite the fact that the place under study has a notorious lack of electricity, water and sewage services, it is supported that they are fortunate to have highly viable renewable resources for their use and investment.

From past research post-tensioned concrete masonry walls have performed well due to in-plane loading, yet despite the advantage of being more aesthetically pleasing, post-tensioned clay brick masonry walls have not been investigated under this loading. Five half scale structural specimens using this system were constructed and tested, and the results from these tests plus a proposed force-displacement analysis procedure are included herein. The results show that post-tensioned clay brick masonry walls are well suited for seismic regions when the walls are grouted and unbonded, and the presence of confinement plates in the compression region greatly enhances the overall performance of the wall. In addition, the force-displacement analysis shows that in order to account for the overall behavior of the wall, cyclic degradation characteristics must be included.

Abstract: The Spanish architect Rafael Leoz de la Fuente (1921-1976) before finishing his studies in 1955, began to collaborate with other partners in the realization of social housing projects. His experience in the work of the Poblado Dirigido de Orcasitas, led him to initiate a research process to which he dedicated much of his work. The theoretical works of the architect had an important dissemination and international impact, to a large extent, due to his friendship with Le Corbusier and Jean Prouvé. Personal tuning and coincidence of interests between them, led Le Corbusier to propose to Rafael Leoz as a member of the Cercle d'Études Architecturales in Paris in 1962. Within this ambitious project of theoretical research Rafael Leoz established two consecutive goals, on one hand, the abstract spatial planning, to later organize and build a specific space in which people dwell. From publications of Rafael Leoz and original documentation of his files, this paper tries to clarify personal and professional relationships between Le Corbusier and Rafael Leoz. Also pretends to establish some links between the Modulor of Le Corbusier and Rafael Leoz investigations. Moreover it will show Leoz’s modular and dimensional proposals from the Yellow Series both as a complement and a result of the Red and Blue series of the Modulor, reaching the development of organizations of social housing. Streszczenie:

A growing need for better performing materials and developing sustainable building solutions with less environmental impact has become indispensable. Renewable resources such as wood provide a natural way to design and build innovative structural systems. The industrialized processes and cutting-edge concepts make wooden buildings a highly competitive and sustainable alternative. Using massive wood elements and housing modules constructed of engineered wood products such as CLT and LVL is an example of building innovation. With today's climate challenges and ongoing sustainability demands it is important to make urban planning and policy development as environmentally friendly as possible. Using wood as construction material is an environmentally conscious choice leading to a solution meeting the needs of population growth and urbanization.
