Streszczenie:
The growing use of mobile devices in daily life has led to an increased demand for the display of large amounts of data. In response, radial visualizations have emerged as a popular type of visualization in mobile applications due to their visual appeal. However, previous research has highlighted issues with these visualizations, namely misinterpretation due to their column length and angles. This study aims to provide guidelines for designing interactive visualizations on mobile devices and new evaluation methods based on the results of an empirical study. The perception of four types of circular visualizations on mobile devices was assessed through user interaction. All four types of circular visualizations were found to be suitable for use within mobile activity tracking applications, with no statistically significant difference in responses by type of visualization or interaction. However, distinguishing characteristics of each visualization type were revealed depending on the category that is in focus (memorability, readability, understanding, enjoyment, and engagement). The research outcomes provide guidelines for designing interactive radial visualizations on mobile devices, enhance the user experience, and introduce new evaluation methods. The study’s results have significant implications for the design of visualizations on mobile devices, particularly in activity tracking applications.

Abstract The visualization of numeric data is becoming an important element in journalism. In this article, we present an interview study investigating data visualization practices in Scandinavian newsrooms. Editorial leaders, data journalists, developers and graphic designers in 10 major news organizations in Norway, Sweden and Denmark provide information for the study on a range of issues concerning visualization practices and experiences. The emergence of multi-skilled specialist groups as well as innovation in technology and the ‘mobile first mantra’ are identified as important factors in the fast-developing practices of journalistic data visualization. Elements of tension and negotiation are revealed for issues concerning the role and effect of complex exploratory data visualizations and concerning the role of ordinary journalists in the production of charts and graphs.

Visualization interfaces designed for heterogeneous devices such as wall displays and mobile screens must be responsive to varying display dimensions, resolution, and interaction capabilities. In this paper, we report on two user studies of visual representations for large versus small displays. The goal of our experiments was to investigate differences between a large vertical display and a mobile hand-held display in terms of the data comprehension and the quality of resulting insights. To this end, we developed a visual interface with a coordinated multiple view layout for the large display and two alternative designs of the same interface – a space-saving boundary visualization layout and an overview layout – for the mobile condition. The first experiment was a controlled laboratory study designed to evaluate the effect of display size on the perception of changes in a visual representation, and yielded significant correctness differences even while completion time remained similar. The second evaluation was a qualitative study in a practical setting and showed that participants were able to easily associate and work with the responsive visualizations. Based on the results, we conclude the paper by providing new guidelines for screen-responsive visualization interfaces.

Due to the development of sensing technology people can easily track their health in various ways, and the interest in personal healthcare data is increasing. Individuals are interested in controlling their wellness, which requires self-awareness and an understanding of various health conditions. Self-generated health data are easily accessed through mobile devices, and data visualization is commonly used in applications. A systematic literature review was conducted to better understand the role of visualizations and learn how to develop effective ones. Thirteen papers were analyzed for types of data, characteristics of visualizations, and effectiveness for healthcare management. The papers were selected because they represented research on personal health data and visualization in a non-clinical setting, and included health data tracked in everyday life. This paper suggests six levels for categorizing the efficacy of visualizations that take into account cognitive and physical changes in users. Recommendations for future work on conducting evaluations are also identified. This work provides a foundation for personal healthcare data as more applications are developed for mobile and wearable devices.

Visualizing big point-clouds, such as those derived from mobile mapping data, is not an easy task. Therefore many approaches have been proposed, based on either reducing the overall amount of data or the amount of data that is currently displayed to the user. Furthermore, an entirely free navigation within such a point-cloud is also not always intuitive using the usual input devices. This work proposes a visualization scheme for massive mobile mapping data inspired by a multiplane camera model also known as parallax scrolling. This technique, albeit entirely two-dimensional, creates a depth illusion by moving a number of overlapping partially transparent image layers at various speeds. The generation of such layered models from mobile mapping data greatly reduces the amount of data up to about 98 % depending on the used image resolution. Finally, it is well suited for the panoramic-fashioned visualization of the environment of a moving car.

The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate a practical approach to data visualization by using mobile technologies and desktop geographic information systems. To do that, we analyze public data for Black Sea water pollution on Varna’s beaches by using real data in real time. Geographic information systems (GISs) are used for visualization, and statistical software is used for correlation analysis. In our approach, the use of open-source software products is essential, namely QGIS and PSPP software. The methodology includes using one dataset, and after extract-transform-load procedures, additional analysis is conducted. Mobile technologies are used to demonstrate the results of the correlation analysis to a wide audience, and data visualization helps for better understanding. A similar visualization approach may be conducted for other subjects and fields of interest.

AbstractSmartphone users are often unaware of mobile applications’ (“apps”) third-party data collection and sharing practices, which put them at higher risk of privacy breaches. One way to raise awareness of these practices is by providing unobtrusive but pervasive visualizations that can be presented in a glanceable manner. In this paper, we applied Wogalter et al.’s Communication-Human Information Processing model (C-HIP) to design and prototype eight different visualizations that depict smartphone apps’ data sharing activities. We varied the granularity and type (i.e., data-centric or app-centric) of information shown to users and used the screensaver/lock screen as a design probe. Through interview-based design probes with Android users (n=15), we investigated the aspects of the data exposure visualizations that influenced users’ comprehension and privacy awareness. Our results shed light on how users’ perceptions of privacy boundaries influence their preference regarding the information structure of these visualizations, and the tensions that exist in these visualizations between glanceability and granularity. We discuss how a pervasive, soft paternalistic approach to privacy-related visualization may raise awareness by enhancing the transparency of information flow, thereby, unobtrusively increasing users’ understanding of data sharing practices of mobile apps. We also discuss implications for privacy research and glanceable security.

Abstract: Power BI has completely revolutionized the worlds of business intelligence, data visualization, and analytics. Power BI is an online service that allows users to search for data, transform it, visualize it, and share the reports and dashboards they create with other users in the same or different departments/organizations, as well as the general public. Power BI is used by over 200,000 organizations in 205 countries as of February 2017. Power BI's Quick Insights feature is an innovative feature that is built on a growing set of advanced analytical algorithms. This function may be activated with a single click after uploading a data set to Power BI, and it generates a number of reports depending on the data's analysis without any need for human participation. This also aids in reducing human errors in calculations and statistical techniques, which can lead to research that isn't verifiable. Power BI is simple to use and ready for adoption as a platform for Research Data Analysis, accepting even Excel spreadsheets as input. The pandemic of the coronavirus has hastened the adoption of mobile-friendly analytics and business intelligence platforms. Companies all over the world now want their employees and customers to have access to data and analytics from any location. The mobile BI market will be worth more than $20 billion by 2024, according to Mordor Intelligence. Furthermore, mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets are expected to account for more than 72 percent of all internet traffic. As a result, implementing mobile-friendly BI platforms across your organization in 2022 makes even more sense from a business perspective. The purpose of this paper is to show how Power BI can quickly transform a piece of research data into a set of shareable analytical reports and dashboards.

Abstract Our aim was to uncover unrecognized phenomic relationships using force-based network visualization methods, based on observed electronic medical record data. A primary phenotype was defined from actual patient profiles in the Multiparameter Intelligent Monitoring in Intensive Care II database. Network visualizations depicting primary relationships were compared to those incorporating secondary adjacencies. Interactivity was enabled through a phenotype visualization software concept: the Phenomics Advisor. Subendocardial infarction with cardiac arrest was demonstrated as a sample phenotype; there were 332 primarily adjacent diagnoses, with 5423 relationships. Primary network visualization suggested a treatment-related complication phenotype and several rare diagnoses; re-clustering by secondary relationships revealed an emergent cluster of smokers with the metabolic syndrome. Network visualization reveals phenotypic patterns that may have remained occult in pairwise correlation analysis. Visualization of complex data, potentially offered as point-of-care tools on mobile devices, may allow clinicians and researchers to quickly generate hypotheses and gain deeper understanding of patient subpopulations.

The conflux of two growing areas of technology – collaboration and visualization – into a new research direction, collaborative visualization, provides new research challenges. Technology now allows us to easily connect and collaborate with one another – in settings as diverse as over networked computers, across mobile devices, or using shared displays such as interactive walls and tabletop surfaces. Digital information is now regularly accessed by multiple people in order to share information, to view it together, to analyze it, or to form decisions. Visualizations are used to deal more effectively with large amounts of information while interactive visualizations allow users to explore the underlying data. While researchers face many challenges in collaboration and in visualization, the emergence of collaborative visualization poses additional challenges, but it is also an exciting opportunity to reach new audiences and applications for visualization tools and techniques. The purpose of this article is (1) to provide a definition, clear scope, and overview of the evolving field of collaborative visualization, (2) to help pinpoint the unique focus of collaborative visualization with its specific aspects, challenges, and requirements within the intersection of general computer-supported cooperative work and visualization research, and (3) to draw attention to important future research questions to be addressed by the community. We conclude by discussing a research agenda for future work on collaborative visualization and urge for a new generation of visualization tools that are designed with collaboration in mind from their very inception.

Situational awareness provides the decision making capability to identify, process, and comprehend big data. In our approach, situational awareness is achieved by integrating and analyzing multiple aspects of data using stacked bar graphs and geographic representations of the data. We provide a data visualization tool to represent COVID pandemic data on top of the geographical information. The combination of geospatial and temporal data provides the information needed to conduct situational analysis for the COVTD-19 pandemic. By providing interactivity, geographical maps can be viewed from different perspectives and offer insight into the dynamical aspects of the COVTD-19 pandemic for the fifty states in the USA. We have overlaid dynamic information on top of a geographical representation in an intuitive way for decision making. We describe how modeling and simulation of data increase situational awareness, especially when coupled with immersive virtual reality interaction. This paper presents an immersive virtual reality (VR environment and mobile environment for data visualization using Oculus Rift head-mounted display and smartphones. Background As digital healthcare expands to include the use of mobile devices, there are opportunities to integrate these technologies into the self-management of chronic disease. Purpose built apps for diabetes self-management are plentiful and vary in functionality; they offer capability for individuals to record, manage, display, and interpret their own data. The optimal incorporation of mobile tablets into diabetes self-care is little explored in research, and guidelines for use are scant. Objective The purpose of this study was to examine an individual’s use of mobile devices and apps in the self-management of type 2 diabetes to establish the potential and value of this ubiquitous technology for chronic healthcare. Methods In a 9-month intervention, 28 patients at a large multidisciplinary healthcare center were gifted internet connected Apple iPads with preinstalled apps and given digital support to use them. They were invited to take up predefined activities, which included recording their own biometrics, monitoring their diet, and traditional online information seeking. Four online surveys captured the participants’ perceptions and health outcomes throughout the study. This article reports on the qualitative analysis of the open-ended responses in all four surveys. Results Using apps, participants self-curated small data sets that included their blood glucose level, blood pressure, weight, and dietary intake. The dynamic visualizations of the data in the form of charts and diagrams were created using apps and participants were able to interpret the impact of their choices and behaviors from the diagrammatic form of their small personal data sets. Findings are presented in four themes: (1) recording personal data; (2) modelling and visualizing the data; (3) interpreting the data; and (4) empowering and improving health. Conclusions The modelling capability of apps using small personal data sets, collected and curated by individuals, and the resultant graphical information that can be displayed on tablet screens proves a valuable asset for diabetes self-care. Informed by their own data, individuals are well-positioned to make changes in their daily lives that will improve their health.

The purpose of the article is as follows, studying the FUI style of the interface for big data information visualization design among various styles of visualization interface in the 21st century. There are three research methods in this paper. Firstly, combing the concept of FUI and summarizing the design features of FUI style interface of big data information visualization from the perspective of design psychology. Secondly, the characteristics of government business big data information visualization and the needs of users are analyzed. Finally, the FUI design style is used in the government business big data information visualization display interface design. The FUI style presentation mode of big data information visualization and the dynamic interaction mode of FUI style interface are discussed. The conclusion is as follows, FUI is more in line with the people's psychological expectation of "future technology visual style" in big data information visualization display, highlighting the FUI data display focus on the prediction function of future events; FUI achieves visual balance through reasonable typesetting, comfortable color matching, uniform decorative shapes, etc. In terms of visual display, it not only meets the requirements of data display design, but also achieves the visual unity of partial data display design and overall data display. FUI mostly adopts flat design and simple dynamic interaction design, which conforms to users' gesture operation and people's visual browsing behavior habits in the era of mobile Internet, and meanwhile improves the utilization rate of single screen display of government departments.

Increasingly complex vector map applications and growing multi-source spatial data pose a serious challenge to the accuracy and efficiency of vector map visualization. It is true especially for real-time and dynamic scene visualization in mobile augmented reality, with the dramatic development of spatial data sensing and the emergence of AR-GIS. Such issues can be decomposed into three issues: accurate pose representation, fast and precise topological relationships computation and high-performance acceleration methods. To solve these issues, a novel quaternion-based real-time vector map visualization approach is proposed in this paper. It focuses on precise position and orientation representation, accurate and efficient spatial relationships calculation and acceleration parallel rendering in mobile AR. First, a quaternion-based pose processing method for multi-source spatial data is developed. Then, the complex processing of spatial relationships is mapped into simple and efficient quaternion-based operations. With these mapping methods, spatial relationship operations with large computational volumes can be converted into efficient quaternion calculations, and then the results are returned to respond to the interaction. Finally, an asynchronous rendering acceleration mechanism is also presented in this paper. Experiments demonstrated that the method proposed in this paper can significantly improve vector visualization of the AR map. The new approach, when compared to conventional visualization methods, provides more stable and accurate rendering results, especially when the AR map has strenuous movements and high frequency variations. The smoothness of the user interaction experience is also significantly improved.

In the Internet era, the amount of data is growing exponentially and companies must be able to harness the value of the vast amount of data. Data platforms must integrate massive amounts of data collection, storage, computation and analysis to meet these opportunities and challenges. In this study, the log data of Internet users browsing websites are analyzed and the technologies used in the platform are briefly described. Finally, a draft platform for analyzing offline Internet user behavior data is proposed, taking into account the current common needs of different industries, while incorporating some innovations. Three modules are designed and implemented: data collection, data warehouse and data visualization. The user's data is mainly collected by the data collection module. The data warehouse is mainly responsible for cleaning, modeling and analyzing the data. As part of the data visualization module, the result data from the ADS layer is used as a template to create tables in MySQL, export the results to MySQL periodically using the Sqoop tool, and visualize the data using the data visualization tool. With Flume, Kafka and Sqoop, HDFS is used as the data storage framework, Hive is used as the storage tool, and Spark is used as the Hive computation engine to build the platform in a large context to analyze Internet user behavior.

Industrial process tomography (IPT) based process control is an advisable approach in industrial heating processes for improving system efficiency and quality. When using it, appropriate dataflow pipelines and visualizations are key for domain users to implement precise data acquisition and analysis. In this article, we propose a complete data processing and visualizing workflow regarding a specific case—microwave tomography (MWT) controlled industrial microwave drying system. Furthermore, we present the up-to-date augmented reality (AR) technique to support the corresponding data visualization and on-site analysis. As a pioneering study of using AR to benefit IPT systems, the proposed AR module provides straightforward and comprehensible visualizations pertaining to the process data to the related users. Inside the dataflow of the case, a time reversal imaging algorithm, a post-imaging segmentation, and a volumetric visualization module are included. For the time reversal algorithm, we exhaustively introduce each step for MWT image reconstruction and then present the simulated results. For the post-imaging segmentation, an automatic tomographic segmentation algorithm is utilized to reveal the significant information contained in the reconstructed images. For volumetric visualization, the 3D generated information is displayed. Finally, the proposed AR system is integrated with the on-going process data, including reconstructed, segmented, and volumetric images, which are used for facilitating interactive on-site data analysis for domain users. The central part of the AR system is implemented by a mobile app that is currently supported on iOS/Android platforms.

We are in the era of promising mobile education. However, data analysis based on children's activities is still limited. This article used rural Tanzanian children’s activity log data in site 131 from November 2018 to January 2019 provided by the RoboTutor team and applied the method of Descriptive Data Analysis to roughly analyze children’s activity through data visualization. First, children may be more interested in story and literacy than math activities; second, children generally spend more time on tasks they cannot fully complete; finally, all children spend more than 60% of their time completing activities, usually in the morning or afternoon. Using this result can provide a more intuitive understanding of children’s activity patterns, which can be helpful for researchers to measure children's activity engagement.
