Streszczenie:
Traditional elastoplastic analysis presumes that all structural data are known exactly. However, these values often cannot be predicted precisely: they are influenced by such factors as manufacturing errors, material defects, and environmental changes. Ignoring these may lead to inaccurate (overly conservative or nonconservative) results. It is thus important that the effects of uncertain data be quantified in a reliable assessment of structural safety. This paper presents the elastoplastic analysis of skeletal frames with uncertaintiesassumed to be interval quantities (i.e. with known upper and lower bounds). Starting from the well-known mixed complementarity program (MCP) statement of the state problem without uncertainties, we extend this to an optimisation problem formulation involving complementarity constraints (that represent the plastic nature of the ductile material). Calculations for both upper and lower bounds of displacements corresponding to monotonically increasing loads are computed. The final results are checked through a comparison with interval limit analyses and Monte Carlo simulations.

Streszczenie:
Hydro-economic river basin models (HERBM) based on mathematical programming are conventionally formulated as explicit ‘aggregate optimization’ problems with a single, aggregate objective function. Often unintended, this format implicitly assumes that decisions on water allocation are made via central planning or functioning markets such as to maximize social welfare. In the absence of perfect water markets, however, individually optimal decisions by water users will differ from the social optimum. Classical aggregate HERBMs cannot simulate that situation and thus might be unable to describe existing institutions governing access to water and might produce biased results for alternative ones. We propose a new solution format for HERBMs, based on the format of the mixed complementarity problem (MCP), where modified shadow price relations express spatial externalities resulting from asymmetric access to water use. This new problem format, as opposed to commonly used linear (LP) or non-linear programming (NLP) approaches, enables the simultaneous simulation of numerous ‘independent optimization’ decisions by multiple water users while maintaining physical interdependences based on water use and flow in the river basin. We show that the alternative problem format allows the formulation HERBMs that yield more realistic results when comparing different water management institutions.

Streszczenie:
The mixed-lubrication problem is formulated as a nonlinear generalized complementarity problem in which the pressure acting on the load-bearing surface is taken as the unknown, and the lubricant flow and the gap between the surfaces are taken as its complements. An iterative method was developed to find the solution, which satisfies the complementarity condition that at each point on the load-bearing surface, the pressure or at least one of its complements, is zero at all times. Moreover, the pressure and its complements satisfy non-negativity constraints. The solution intrinsically decomposes the load-bearing surface into three distinct subregions: solid-to-solid contact, hydrodynamically lubricated contact, and no contact (or cavitation). It is shown that the mixed-lubrication formulation degenerates into the special cases of hydrodynamic or solid-to-solid contacts under appropriate load and speed conditions. A journal bearing with elastic support is analyzed to illustrate the method of solution. The transition of the lubrication mode from pure hydrodynamic contact to mixed contact is demonstrated.

Streszczenie:
In this paper, we present a smoothing Newton method for solving the monotone weighted complementarity problem (WCP). In each iteration of our method, the iterative direction is achieved by solving a system of linear equations and the iterative step length is achieved by adopting a line search. A feature of the line search criteria used in this paper is that monotone and nonmonotone line search are mixed used. The proposed method is new even when the WCP reduces to the standard complementarity problem. Particularly, the proposed method is proved to possess the global convergence under a weak assumption. The preliminary experimental results show the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed method for solving the concerned WCP.

As is well known, the mixed complementarity problem is equivalent to a nonsmooth equation by using a median function. By investigating the generalized Jacobi of a composite vector-valued maximum function, a nonsmooth Levenberg–Marquardt algorithm is proposed in this paper. In the present algorithm, we adopt a new LM parameter form and discuss the local convergence rate under the local error bound condition, which is weaker than nonsingularity. Finally, the numerical experiments and the application for the real-time pricing in smart grid illustrate the effectiveness of the algorithm.

Streszczenie:
AbstractA standard quadratic program is an optimization problem that consists of minimizing a (nonconvex) quadratic form over the unit simplex. We focus on reformulating a standard quadratic program as a mixed integer linear programming problem. We propose two alternative formulations. Our first formulation is based on casting a standard quadratic program as a linear program with complementarity constraints. We then employ binary variables to linearize the complementarity constraints. For the second formulation, we first derive an overestimating function of the objective function and establish its tightness at any global minimizer. We then linearize the overestimating function using binary variables and obtain our second formulation. For both formulations, we propose a set of valid inequalities. Our extensive computational results illustrate that the proposed mixed integer linear programming reformulations significantly outperform other global solution approaches. On larger instances, we usually observe improvements of several orders of magnitude.

Friction and contact phenomenon widely exist in mechanical systems. In order to tackle the frictional contact problem of mechanical systems, efficient numerical resolution methods and simulation methods are put forward. A mixed nonlinear complementary model describing frictional contact problem is built based on time-stepping method and complementarity theories. In order to solve the model effectively, the block matrix method and linearization method are used to change the mixed nonlinear complementary problem into a linear complementary problem which can be easily solved. At last, the validity of the numerical resolution methods are verified through a numerical example.

Streszczenie:
Mixed inference such as the marginal MAP query (some variables marginalized by summation and others by maximization) is key to many prediction and decision models. It is known to be extremely hard; the problem is NPPP-complete while the decision problem for MAP is only NP-complete and the summation problem is #P-complete. Consequently, approximation anytime schemes are essential. In this paper, we show that the framework of heuristic AND/OR search, which exploits conditional independence in the graphical model, coupled with variational-based mini-bucket heuristics can be extended to this task and yield powerful state-of-the-art schemes. Specifically, we explore the complementary properties of best-first search for reducing the number of conditional sums and providing time-improving upper bounds, with depth-first search for rapidly generating and improving solutions and lower bounds. We show empirically that a class of solvers that interleaves depth-first with best-first schemes emerges as the most competitive anytime scheme.

Abstract In Very Large-Scale Integration Circuit (VLSI) advanced node design, the standard cells are usually designed with mixed height to meet various requirements. In this paper, benefit from the initial placement from global placement, we first align cells to the power rail type matching rows and divide multi-row-height cells into single-row-height ones. Next, quadratic programming model is constructed and converted into linear complementarity problem (LCP). Last, we choose two matrix splits and apply an accelerated modulus-based matrix splitting iteration method to solve LCP. Experimental results indicate that we achieve better performance than two published state-of the-art works.

Firstly, we give the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) optimality condition of primal problem and introduce Jordan algebra simply. On the basis of Jordan algebra, we extend smoothing Fischer-Burmeister (F-B) function to Jordan algebra and make the complementarity condition smoothing. So the first-order optimization condition can be reformed to a nonlinear system. Secondly, we use the mixed line search quasi-Newton method to solve this nonlinear system. Finally, we prove the globally and locally superlinear convergence of the algorithm.

The European demand for natural gas imports may change through the energy transition, which may affect natural gas exporters’ strategic behavior and consequently the natural gas prices. Changes in natural gas prices in turn influence the European energy sector in terms of gas consumption in the short-term and investments in the long-term. The present paper develops a large-scale partial equilibrium market model formulated as a mixed complementarity model (MCP) with conjectural variations. This model considers the global natural gas market and the European markets of electricity, heating, and emission trading in one equilibrium. We apply this model to investigate the long-term impact of market power by gas exporters on the mentioned energy-related markets on the horizon of 2050. The results of the study show that a decrease in the market power by gas exporters decreases natural gas prices, leading to cheaper electricity and CO2 prices in the mid-term. However, a very tight emission cap in 2050 can result in the reverse phenomenon.

The problem of racial discrimination in South Africa speaks to the question of who is to be included and excluded from South African society. South African society before the advent of democracy structurally and politically was built on exclusionary policies that are disadvantageous to those classified as blacks, colored (mixed raced individuals), and Indians (South Africans of Indian descent), respectively. To unpack the nature of this racial discrimination, I will start by showing how the historical workings of Apartheid policies contribute to the continued problem of racial discrimination in South Africa. I argue that the problem of racial discrimination in present-day South Africa can best be analyzed from new perspectives motivated by the legacies of Apartheid. One such perspective is the value of what I call racial complementarity. I tap into conversational thinking to show how we can rethink the problem of racial discrimination using a different framework other than ubuntu that has failed to adequately address racial discrimination despite its humanistic values. To go beyond ubuntu, one of the ways of addressing racial discrimination would be to cultivate the orientation of racial complementarity. I employed conversational thinking as my preferred methodology for managing the relationship of seemingly opposed variables like the racial lines in South Africa, making it possible for seemingly opposed variables to interact harmoniously and complement one another in ways that dispel unequal and discriminatory treatment of individuals within any society.

To this end, we define the efficient frontier by a linear complementarity system and propose a mixed integer programming (MIP) approach to solve the LDP. Our proposed MIP approach: (1) can solve the LDP based on [Formula: see text]-norm ([Formula: see text]) by using a state-of-the-art solver and obtain the closest efficient target over the whole efficient frontier instead of a subset of it; (2) can be applied for computing the least distance DEA models satisfying the monotonicity; (3) is more user-friendly, because it allows a decision maker to improve the efficiency of a decision making unit (DMU) by setting the affordable input/output level under his/her circumstance. Thus, the efficient target provided by our approach may be more appropriate from the perspective of the decision makers of DMUs.

Streszczenie:
In order to achieve better dynamics performances of a class of automobile active suspensions with the model uncertainties and input delays, this paper proposes a generalized robust linear H2/H∞ state feedback control approach. First, the mathematical model of a half-automobile active suspension is established. In this model, the H∞ norm of body acceleration is determined as the performance index of the designed controller, and the hard constraints of suspension dynamic deflection, tire dynamic load and actuator saturation are selected as the generalized H2 performance output index of the designed controller to satisfy the suspension safety requirements. Second, a generalized H2/H∞ guaranteed cost state-feedback controller is developed in terms of Lyapunov stability theory. In addition, the Cone Complementarity Linearization (CCL) algorithm is employed to convert the generalized H2/H∞ output-feedback control problem into a finite convex optimization problem (COP) in a linear matrix inequality framework. Finally, a numerical simulation case of this half-automobile active suspension is presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed controller in frequency-domain and time-domain.

Abstract China’s natural gas market is focusing on price reform and aims to reconstruct vertically integrated industrial chains in the future. Based on the mixed complementarity problem model of gas markets with nodes in Henan Province, China, as an example, this paper applies numerical modeling to simulate the effects of social welfare and equilibrium prices on nodes in two scenarios: pipeline integration and pipeline separation. The findings reveal the following: (1) Pipeline separation yields greater overall social welfare than pipeline integration, with the welfare shifting from gas producers to consumption markets. (2) Pipeline separation lowers the equilibrium consumption prices by driving competition among gas supply sources. (3) Pipeline separation will increase the contribution of natural gas to primary energy.

Health workforce planning aims to meet a health system’s needs with a sustainable and fit-for-purpose workforce, although its efficacy is reduced in conditions of uncertainty. This PhD breakthrough article offers foresight as a means of addressing this uncertainty and models its complementarity in the context of the health workforce planning problem. The article summarises the findings of a two-case multi-phase mixed method study that incorporates actor analysis, scenario development and policy Delphi. This reveals a few dominant actors of considerable influence who are in conflict over a few critical workforce issues. Using these to augment normative scenarios, developed from existing clinically developed model of care visions, a number of exploratory alternative descriptions of future workforce situations are produced for each case. Their analysis reveals that these scenarios are a reasonable facsimile of plausible futures, though some are favoured over others. Policy directions to support these favoured aspects can also be identified. This novel approach offers workforce planners and policy makers some guidance on the use of complimentary data, methods to overcome the limitations of conventional workforce forecasting and a framework for exploring the complexities and ambiguities of a health workforce’s evolution.

Despite the significant advances of Brazilian agriculture, transportation and storage costs still constitute the main barriers to the Brazilian agribusiness. The aim of this article is to analyze the effect of segregation of maize and soybeans in the Brazilian transport and storage logistics, especially genetically modified grains. In the context of the guidelines of the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety (CPB) as well as of the competitiveness in the international market, we develop a spatial equilibrium model in the form of a mixed complementarity problem. The competitiveness of Brazilian maize and soybeans on the international market is compromised by the inefficient logistics and slow responses to the demands of the CPB. The contribution of the paper is to evaluate how regulatory issues of a segment, in this case biotechnology, may interfere with logistic infrastructure projects.

As the emergence of the connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs), the platooning technology is believed to play a key role in the future intelligent transportation system. However, current studies mainly focus on the beneficial sides of CAV platoons, and less attention is given to their negative effects. This study develops a mixed equilibrium model for CAV platoons and human-driven vehicles (HDVs), which consider both the positive and negative sides of CAV platooning. On the positive side, CAV platoons are assumed to follow user equilibrium (UE) route choice for their information advantages, while HDVs to follow stochastic user equilibrium (SUE). CAV platoons are also presumed to improve the road capacity. On the negative side, the speed of CAV platoons is slower than that of HDVs for safety stakes, which will impede the latter to overtake. The HDVs is split up into overtaking and nonovertaking flows with different speeds. Furthermore, the model is built up as a mixed UE-SUE equilibrium problem and reformulated as a nonlinear complementarity problem. In addition, an optimal path platooning method is proposed to reduce the negative effects, by integrating travel costs of both CAV platoons and HDVs into its objective function. Numerical results show that the introduction of CAV platoons may increase the travel cost at the initial stage, and the proposed method can effectively reduce the platooning disturbance, thus helps promoting the wider applications of CAV platoons.

Abstract The MAP is an innovative receptive music therapy intervention derived from psychomusical relaxation methods that aims to foster the well-being and recovery of youths with mental health problems by providing them with an adaptive and effective music-assisted means to regulate their mood states. In this quasi-experimental pilot study, we assessed the mood-enhancing potential of participation in MAP sessions delivered by a music therapist in an in-patient mental health facility for children and adolescents. Using short standardized self-reported questionnaires, 20 participants aged 9–17 years old (M = 14, SD = 2.4), mainly girls (13 = 65%), rated their affective state immediately before and after two to four MAP sessions and a similar number of regular unit activity sessions used as comparison. This created a 2 × 2 (Time × Condition) single-group within-individual design. We analyzed pre–post session changes in affect using multilevel mixed models and found participation in MAP sessions to be associated with systematic reductions in self-reported general negative affect and state anxiety. These variations were of modest-to-large magnitude and significantly greater than those associated to participation in regular unit activities. While only a first step towards the validation of the MAP as an effective intervention to foster more adaptive and effective day-to-day mood regulation in youths with mental health problems, this study supports its specific potential to alleviate negative affects and provides a rare demonstration of the putative benefits of music therapy in a pediatric mental health inpatient context.

Streszczenie:
In this paper, the problem of reliable control design with mixed H∞ /passive performance is discussed for a class of Takagi–Sugeno TS fuzzy descriptor systems with time-varying delay, sensor failure, and randomly occurred non-linearity. Based on the Lyapunov theory, firstly, a less conservative admissible criterion is established by combining the delay decomposition and reciprocally convex approaches. Then, the attention is focused on the design of a reliable static output feedback (SOF) controller with mixed H∞ /passive performance requirements. The key merit of the paper is to propose a simple method to design such a controller since the system output is subject to probabilistic missing data and noise. Using the output vector as a state component, an augmented model is introduced, and sufficient conditions are derived to achieve the desired performance of the closed-loop system. In addition, the cone complementarity linearization (CCL) algorithm is provided to calculate the controller gains. At last, three numerical examples, including computer-simulated truck-trailer and ball and beam systems are given to show the efficacy of our proposed approach, compared with existing ones in the literature.

Pumped storage is the largest-capacity form of grid energy storage available. A multi-period oligopolistic model for analyzing the bidding strategies of pumped storage GenCo (PSG) is proposed in this paper. In the pumping periods, the pumped storage unit (PSU) is simulated as a special load. While in generating periods, PSU is treated as a normal generator. In this model, all GenCos are assumed to exercise Cournot strategies to maximize their own profits. The resulting equilibrium formulation is established in terms of a mixed linear complementarity problem. The purpose of this paper is to provide an efficient simulation tool for the PSG to determine its bidding strategy in an oligopolistic environment. The proposed model can also be used to study various factors that may impact PSG’s profit. Results of a six-bus test system are analyzed to illustrate the characteristics of the proposed model.

There is currently a shortage of chemical molecules that can be used as bioactive probes to study molecular targets and potentially as starting points for drug discovery. One inexpensive way to address this problem is to use computational methods to screen a comprehensive database of small molecules to discover novel structures that could lead to alternative and better bioactive probes. Despite that pleasing logic the results have been somewhat mixed. Here we describe a virtual screening technique based on ligand–receptor shape complementarity, Ultrafast Shape Recognition (USR). USR is specifically applied to identify novel inhibitors of arylamine N -acetyltransferases by computationally screening almost 700 million molecular conformers in a time- and resource-efficient manner. A small number of the predicted active compounds were purchased and tested obtaining a confirmed hit rate of 40 per cent which is an outstanding result for a prospective virtual screening.

Streszczenie:
Abstract For the problem of optimal scheduling of integrated energy systems involving wind power consumption, by mining multiple thermal inertia, a stochastic optimal scheduling strategy with consideration of mixed uncertainties is proposed. Firstly, the network thermal inertia is explored by considering the dynamic characteristics and thermal storage of heat network. Then the heat load flexibility constraint is introduced to model the thermal inertia of buildings. Finally heat pumps and heat storage are used as time-shiftable loads or sources, which are jointly modelled with CHP units to solve the peak-valley mismatch of electric and heat loads, and on this basis, the model is established. In this paper, the Barry Island’s case which is composed of 33-node thermal network coupled with 9-node grid system is used as an example for analysis, and results show that by exploring the multiple thermal inertia, both the complementarity and the flexible dispatch between multiple heterogeneous energy sources in integrated energy system can be realized.
