In this article we address the accelerated transformation of social experiences linked to the development of information and communication technologies. Our objective is to understand how media narratives are related to changes in the audiovisual representation of violence and the repertoires of vindication. In this regard, it was found that the exponential increase in audiovisual production, whose proliferation is due to the massive use of smartphones, causes a blurring between fiction and reality. This made it possible to identify that these aspects are relevant to examine and understand hypermediatized societies.

Streszczenie:
This article is embedded in discourses surrounding the new mobility of people as well as scientific, technological and socio-cultural changes in a late-colonial setting. It investigates how a number of prominent and less-known male authors from the centre and margins of the twentieth-century Hindi literary canon, including Rishabhcharan Jain, Shriyut ‘Arun’ and Durgadas Bhaskar, depict unconventional family constellations and human relationships that challenge normative conceptions of family, fatherhood, conjugality and blood bonds as well as gender roles and responsibilities. The short stories under investigation suggest that human relationships require constant negotiation and investigation of the meaning of kinship, caste, class and the human. In the process, we encounter adulterous husbands, strong wives and nurturing fathers’ life struggles and tribulations. These short stories centre on husband–wife, man–mistress, wife–mistress and father–son relationships. Their male protagonists are authoritative towards their wives, caring towards their mistresses and nurturing towards children. At times, their self-sacrifice goes as far as to complete self-annihilation for the sake of the offspring, and, at other times, they lead double lives. Mothers are absent in these short stories. Instead, male protagonists claim parenthood and are ready to go as far as to abduct infants in order to perform fatherhood. I argue that parenting constellations and conjugality became negotiable for a number of factors that are addressed in my selection of Hindi short stories: (a) parenthood was not contingent upon biology (as stories on adoption and abduction suggest), (b) contraception was readily available to women and men (as promoted in periodicals of the time) and in the process also changing attitudes towards sexuality and conjugality, (c) abortion emerged as a medical option to undo a pregnancy emerging from an illicit love affair and (d) the new mobility enabled people to get around easily and frequently and even lead double lives. In addressing these factors, fiction published and circulated in periodicals offered novel imaginative and innovative spaces for the negotiation of family models once projected as normative in social reformist and nationalist discourses.

A small study was conducted to determine how preservice teachers in a social studies methods class responded to reading an historical fiction graphic novel in an in-class literature circle followed by an authentication project. Role/task sheets, reading journals, and one-on-one interviews provided data. Analysis showed that all participants were successful at some level in navigating the unique aspects of the graphic novel and all felt the graphic novel experience could be successfully translated to their classrooms. Results also suggested that participants with prior experience with graphic novels appeared to have a more positive experience with the project.

Following the strong program in cultural sociology, I propose a strong program in the sociology of liter-ature, which treats literary pieces rightly as relatively autonomous cultural entities and “independent var-iables”. To outline the epistemological foundations of the new research program, I compare how social knowledge comes into existence through the sociological text and the text of literary fiction. I discuss the representation of social reality in interpretive research, with Isaac Reed’s book Interpretation and Social Knowledge as a starting point. To claim literary autonomy, I outline some of the aspects which social the-ory shares with literary fiction. I am mainly interested in how social theory and literary fiction mediate social knowledge to their readers via the aesthetic experience. I identify two main categories of social knowledge mediated by literature: existential understanding and Zeitgeist. Discussing the sociological treatment of several novels, I look at how these two categories intertwine and support each other to create colorful, sensitive, but also robust and deep social knowledge, which condenses aesthetic, existential, and non-discursive aspects of social experience together with the “big picture” of whole societies. I argue that only by overcoming the often-assumed inferiority of literature in sociological research can sociology real-ize its full potential in understanding the meanings of social life.

Epistolary fiction, often thought of as an eighteenth-century phenomenon, enjoys considerable vitality in our time and has attracted much welcome critical attention in recent years. The focus, however, has been on selected aspects of the epistolary tradition, to the neglect of others that are part of its rich history. At the same time, discussions of C. S. Lewis's The Screwtape Letters (1942) have generally concentrated on its theological, moral, and satirical aspects, with little consideration of the generic identification declared in the book's title. Attention to its striking affiliations with the epistolary tradition in fiction sheds light on Lewis's artistry in the work, on current critical discourse concerning epistolarity, on Lewis's social and cultural criticism, and on his contributions to critical theory. In the present study, selected aspects of the nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century epistolary tradition are briefly surveyed; then, matters of setting, plot, characterization (especially), and handling of viewpoint in The Screwtape Letters are considered, as well as its widespread debts to the literary heritage and its relationship to Lewis's own contributions as a literary scholar and critic. Attention is given to the implications of Lewis's original preface which has recently been discovered.

The narrative story has evolved from its precursor, when the old myths are shattered, in which the new novel has become a text with numerous cultural formats within its contents. Fragmentation and separation have been two of the most significant aspects of modern creative writing. In order to grasp the evolving reality, novelists must assume new creative forms in which the reader joins the realms of secrecy and marginalization. Those looking for the positions of the novelist critics will notice that contemporary writing has occupied a distinguished position due to the issues it raises regarding humanity and the homeland and pushing its readers to become conscious and understand what is lacking. The issues of the homeland have become thorny issues due to the imagination of the novelist and his intellectuality. It became more and more evident. The novel, with its transformation and development in content and structure, has become an autonomous literary genre that hides complex topics beyond the words. Its reader must search for distinct critical mechanisms to read it and decode its words. Hence, contemporary novelists did not write fictional texts arbitrarily. But, behind every text there was a significance and a human issue affecting the community whose conditions deteriorated socially and politically. From the above, we will try, in this research paper, to dig into the depth of the issue and reveal the features of the contemporary fictional text and its marginalization. Perhaps the most important question is: Did contemporary creative writing really contribute to educating societies? And revealed the issues that are absent and marginalized? Will the continuation of this type of writing change and solve the nation's crises? In order to answer these questions, we have to research contemporary creative writing and dive into the most important cultural, social, political and even ideological systems.

In the article, the author investigates connections between historical variability of literary genres and readers’ ability to recognize them. Following J.-M. Schaeffer, the author understands genre as a semiotic sign constituted of a “generic name” and “generic notion.” The author interprets Schaeffer’s theory from the perspective of cognitive poetics and treats genres as “prototypes.” Their nature is both individual and collective—it derives from a person’s individual experience and skills of aesthetic reception, but also from social imaginary and stereotypes. The author focuses on a noncanonical genre of popular literature—science fiction—and argues that social and receptive aspects of the genre are interconnected. In the final part, the author analyses the image of “generation starship” in science fiction and concludes that changes of poetic techniques used to create fictional space of science-fictional starships—which has no correlation with readers’ empirical surroundings—formed a new “reading paradigm”, i.e., addressed mechanisms of reception that were not relevant previously in the history of the genre.

This trio of stories explores the cost of our increasingly commercialized, globalized society in a fictional future setting. They contain some dystopian science fiction elements in the tradition of George Orwell and Aldous Huxley. The antagonist and central focus of all three stories is Hobbes Sylvan, an entitled white southerner whose gradual transformation into activist, criminal, and finally cyberterrorist is chronicled through the successive stories. The titular "Programmer," Hobbes Sylvan is both manipulator and product of the fictional future world she inhabits. Through the ethical dilemmas she faces the reader is asked to examine questions of morality in our own society. The stories are self-contained but connected, with different protagonists and conflicts but similar thematic material. They are told in first person, in epistolary (email) format, and in third person respectively, and set in chronological order.

Streszczenie:
This thesis comprises three sections. Section One is a novel Silhouettes of Alice, divided into four parts. Parts I and II are set in the fifties and sixties, and Part IV is set in the twenty-first century. The novel highlights the formative years of a girl's life from the age of five to twelve years, leaving home at twenty, and later, at mid-life, getting divorced and starting over. Section Two is a collection of twenty poems that form part of the creative writing component, a new work entitled Country Girl. Section Three is an essay on Views from the Veranda: Visual Maps of Place, Culture and Identity. This area of research highlights the veranda as a significant cultural contribution to the Australian way of life, place and identity. The veranda is featured in both manuscripts, and is integral to themes of love, home, friendship and familial guardianship. In the essay, by utilizing several authors' works, I discuss how the veranda acts as a caesura, a pause on the edge of the house, a reflective space where families interact, educate, communicate, and socialize. The research into the veranda, especially Philip Drew's work Veranda: Embracing Place, has facilitated my inquiry into the social, physical and cultural significance of the veranda. The essay also utilizes Gaston Bachelard's The Poetics of Space, primarily for theoretical insights into spatial environments, and his philosophical and metaphysical theories on intimate places where the mind rests, evoking the imagination, memories and daydreams - the writer's essential tools .

AbstractRoboethics analyzes the ethical, legal and social aspects of robotics, especially with regard to advanced robotics applications. These issues are related to liability, the protection of privacy, the defense of human dignity, distributive justice and the dignity of work. Today, roboethics is becoming an important component in international standards for advanced robotics, and in various aspects of artificial intelligence. An autonomous robot endowed with deep learning capabilities shows specificities in terms of its growing autonomy and decision-making functions and, thus, gives rise to new ethical and legal issues. The learning models for a care robot assisting an elderly person or a child must be free of bias related to the selected attributes and should not be subject to any stereotypes unintentionally included in their design. As roboethics goes hand in hand with developments in robotics applications, it should be the concern of all actors in the field, from designers and manufacturers to users. There is one very important element in this—albeit one that is related indirectly—that should not be overlooked: namely, how robotics and robotic applications are represented to the general public. Of the many representations, the legacy of mythology, science fiction and the legend still play an important role. The world of robotics is often marked by icons and images from literature. Exaggerated expectations of their functions, magical descriptions of their behavior, over-anthropomorphization, insistence on their perfection and their rationality compared to that of humans are only some of the false qualities attributed to robotics.

Streszczenie:
This chapter gives a survey of translations from Russian literature made in Estonia in 1918–40 against the backdrop of the latter nation’s cultural development. Translation is understood as a practice affected by social contingencies and cultural exchanges. As former citizens of Tsarist Russia, the older generation of Estonian intellectuals for who shaped the cultural repertoire of Estonia after independence in 1918 drew on their knowledge of Russian. The initial need for drama translations for amateur theatre groups was paralleled by interest in new developments of Russian fiction (reflecting the influence of Soviet Communism) and in translations of classic Russian authors, now part of the global literary canon. To support our argument that cultural exchange is relatively autonomous from political factors, we analyse how Dostoevsky influenced Anton Hansen Tammsaare (1878-1940), a major Estonian prose author and a translator of Dostoevsky. Tammsaare openly acknowledged Dostoevsky’s influence on the poetics of his prose. Through transculturation, the polyphonic composition of Dostoevsky’s novels resonates with aspects of Tammsaare’s pentalogy Truth and Justice. The latter’s translation of Crime and Punishment is the only Estonian version of this novel; it has been reissued repeatedly and never retranslated. The freedom of the world republic of letters, which ignore political and linguistic boundaries of nations, is manifest in Tammsaare’s decision to translate Crime and Punishment and the fact that his century-old version is still current in Estonia.

Streszczenie:
Abstract Defoe has long been regarded as the father of the realistic English novel, but that label obscures the variety of prose fictional genres in which he worked. Recent scholarship sees his fictions as hybrids of genres such as biography (both historical and imaginative), history (both private or ‘secret’ as well as public), and moral or propagandistic tracts (advancing political, religious, or social purposes). The three volumes that comprise the life, adventures, and reflections of Robinson Crusoe exemplify this hybridity, each drawing on multiple genres to reveal different aspects of Crusoe’s personality. Memoirs of a Cavalier, Journal of the Plague Year, and New Voyage Round the World use imaginary narratives of public events to examine historical and political subjects. Defoe’s most ‘novelistic’ works, Captain Singleton, Moll Flanders, and Colonel Jack, commence as works of entertainment but explore topics including piracy, crime, and slavery. Finally, The Fortunate Mistress flouts the conventions of ‘the novel’ and creates something entirely new.

Streszczenie:
Abstract This book is intended as a guide to late twentieth-century American fiction for the undergraduate student and the general reader. The principal objective has been to offer substantial and detailed interpretations of the primary texts, and to suggest contexts in which those novels might usefully be considered. The discussions of the novels attempt to achieve a balance between interpretation and sometimes necessary expository comments, although even exposition is interpretative in the way that it prioritizes certain aspects of narrative above others. The chapters take certain subject areas in American life and investigate their representation in fiction. This is necessarily a two-way process in which the reading of fiction conditions what the reader deems to be important in the American social text, and this relationship is one of the most difficult issues that this book seeks to tacitly manage: how does a critic move with confidence between the literary text and the social text? Clearly, it is no simple correspondence.

Streszczenie:
This chapter focuses on Jacek Dukaj, arguably the most interesting voice in contemporary Polish science fiction: the author of six long novels, four long novellas/short novels, and a number of shorts stories, he is also a ten-time nominee and six-time winner of the Janusz Zajdel Award, as well as a recipient of the 2008 European Union Prize for Literature. Dukaj is not only a true heir to Stanisław Lem but, arguably, overshadows the Polish master in terms of narrative complexity and intellectual density. Characterized by narrative, philosophical, and aesthetic complexity, Dukaj’s prose lends itself to a number of readings and approaches, but three aspects of his writing make him unique, both domestically and in a broader context: the genre-bending versatility of his fiction; the unusual dynamic between the practice of worldbuilding and narrative plotting; and the degree to which the author uses science fiction to engage a number of political, social, and cultural aspects of Polish society. In all three spheres, he combines cutting-edge artistry with a critical attitude towards the science-fiction tradition at large and specific scientific, intellectual, and political discourses.

In the early 1920s, the literary editor Sidney Clark wrote about English classic texts as moral guides for new readers. In 1932, Q. D. Leavis bemoaned the growth of popular fiction as simple escape. More positive overall was the growth of books as constructions of word and image, not just through illustrations but in all aspects of design, layout and increasingly through pictorial dust jackets in books of all kinds. Design of covers and binding revealed much about contents, with the Left Book Club and its rival Right Book Club the most extreme, declaring their content and political stance. In new homes, books became a way of presenting the owners’ tastes to visitors; the design of Penguin Books in particular made purchasing easier and cheaper, and also offered books of many kinds, identifiable by colour-coded covers, to new readers.

India's revolutionary writer of the 20th century, Mulk Raj Anand, altered the way people wrote and thought about Indian fiction. Prior to him, novelists who had created fiction tended to focus on the idealized and romantic aspects of life. The problems in society were less in number. The field of fiction writing underwent a transformation thanks to the writing of Mulk Raj Anand. For the benefit of the underprivileged and untouchables, he penned the novels. Through his works, he addressed problems such as casteism, capitalism, feudalism, colonialism, and imperialism. He confronts one of the main social ills in Indian society—a stain on Indian society, culture, and legacy that has colonised 85% of the population—in Untouchable, a topic that has gone unaddressed by other authors. The Indian people's inventiveness has suffered because of this sensibility. Untouchability and casteism are stains on humanity's good name. Anand appears to be standing up for the untouchables' and oppressed peoples' rights to justice, equality, and freedom. In colonial and post-independence India, he worked to advance basic human rights and needs. Among all essential rights, he believed that respect for human dignity was the most important. The main character, Bakha, harboured grudges but suppressed them out of caste-related dread. Every untouchable person in India is symbolised by the Hindu god Bakha.

This chapter examines the author’s function in Walter Besant’s Herr Paulus (1888) and Armorel of Lyonesse (1890). It places the representation of literary and artistic creation in Walter Besant’s novels within the transnational context of the debates on international copyright and the nationalist restructuring of the trade that followed copyright legislation. Both aspects were covered in the pages of the periodical The Author directed by Besant in the same period, thus making a transnational approach in the study of Victorian fiction all the more necessary. The novels provide a poignant critique of the misleading power of make-belief that sustained several forms of literary, economic and social fictions, thus redefining the notion of literary value against the rhetoric adopted by the proponents of the triumphant and often unfair practices of monopolistic liberalism. Walter Besant’s fiction takes aim at the remnants of the Romantic ideology that clouded a materialist assessment of the author’s value in the marketplace, problematizing the Platonist theory of creativity, that was rather counterproductive to the affirmation of the author’s advancement as independent force in the marketplace, the goal of Besant’s reformism.

The article reveals the theoretical and methodical aspects of students’ civic education by means of literature. Emphasis is placed on the fact that in the conditions of unstable development of society, escalation of conflicts both between states and between fellow citizens, the issue of students’ civic education is actualized. The authors understand this concept as a form of social education, the formation of a citizen of a specific state, capable of successfully acting for the sake of preserving democracy and peace. Currently, informal education, in addition to the content of “social and civic competencies” that is understandable for Ukrainian educators, uses the term “competencies for the culture of democracy”, which, according to the authors, is a structured concept implemented in the European dimension of civic education. The authors emphasize that fiction affects human feelings and consciousness, it is a powerful means of moral, aesthetic and civic education. Through artistic images, writers provide an opportunity to form their attitude to the events described, to draw certain conclusions, to reflect on universal values, on the actions of one or another character, to see models of civic active/passive behavior. The article analyzes the European experience of civic education, in particular Great Britain and Germany. The authors take into account the literature of these countries and identify aspects that can serve as a basis for students’ civic education, compare them with the Ukrainian realities of civic education. The authors present the main vectors of civic education in Germany, which are determined by the content of literary works and encourage pluralism of opinions, tolerance for the views and judgments of others, motivate students to actively participate in civic life, awareness of the value of freedom, respect for human dignity, the right to self-expression, responsibility for an individual’s moral choice. The works are also the basis for establishing in teenagers such democratic values as the right to life, to fair treatment, dignity, freedom from discrimination, the right to equality, understanding the need to protect one’s rights and the rights of other people. The analysis of content concepts of literature for pupils in Great Britain shows that the priorities of civic education are national patriotism and the education of a law-abiding citizen. The textual material of the works and civic education lessons help pupils to better understand different forms of governance and their impact on citizens; to understand the responsibility and functions of management and the duties of citizens; to acquire socio-cultural experience that gives the opportunity to feel morally, socially, politically, legally competent and protected in society and to take direct part in the activities of civil society institutions. In Finland, the basic democratic values of the national core curriculum are open democracy, equality, responsibility for one’s own choice. An important focus of education in Finnish high school is gaining experience in shaping the future based on joint decisions and interaction.Taking into account the global trends of digitization, the authors considered digital technologies to be educational innovations in students’ civic education (electronic textbooks (not just digitized, but interactive, with virtual 3D materials that teachers can compose at their discretion), textbook scans for download, various materials: interactive laboratories, virtual museums, forums for teachers to communicate, etc.).

In this paper it’s the first time the authors have reviewed linguistic literature (2008-2022) devoted to the problem of literary and electronic hypertext. The purpose of the paper is to review linguistic literature and identify the current state of the problem of literary and electronic hypertext. Materials and methods. On the basis of this purpose we reviewed 42 scientific papers published in 2008-2022 and representing the results of linguistic research of literary and electronic hypertext. For our study we used an analytical and descriptive method, which is traditional for linguistics and allows us to solve the tasks set in our paper. Results. A review of linguistic papers has shown that hypertext is a relevant subject of linguistic research. Scientists propose various definitions of this concept; consider it as a “special information and communication environment”. Many studies are devoted to literary (fiction and non-fiction) hypertext, however, a much larger number of papers are devoted to various aspects of electronic hypertext, including electronic fiction hypertext and electronic hypertext of some genres (news genres, online advertising, social network and online diary community as well as websites). We consider that it is the electronic environment where hypertext is implemented in all its functions. Practical implications. The results of the study can be used as a theoretical basis for further theoretical and practical study of various aspects of literary and electronic hypertext.
