AbstractThis article consists of a reflection on the ethnographic and political legacy of the protestant missionary Henri-Alexandre Junod. A member of the Swiss Mission, Junod was one of the few missionaries to enjoy the recognition of “professional” anthropologists in his time (among them, Malinowski himself, who praised his pioneering ethnography on the Thonga of southern Africa). But beyond his important ethnographic legacy, his work as a missionary brought him into contact with many perplexities and paradoxes. Besides living and working in the Union of South Africa – present day South Africa – he lived for many years in Mozambique, where at certain times, his presence – and that of the protestant missionaries in general – was not well accepted by Portuguese Colonial Regime. Today, the policies on bilingual education, the process of reinvention of the Shangaan identity, the multicultural dilemmas of post-socialist Mozambique and the role of the Protestant churches in the formation of the civil society, cannot be understood without a systematic and renewed reflection on the legacy of Henri-Alexandre Junod. Cet article propose une réflexion sur l'héritage ethnographique et politique du missionnaire protestant Henri-Alexandre Junod. Membre de la Missions Suisse Romande, Junod fut un des rares missionnaires qui fut reconnu de son vivant par les anthropologues "professionnels" (entre autres Malinowski lui-même qui loua son travail ethnographique sur les Thonga d'Afrique australe). Au-delà son héritage ethnographique, le travail de Junod comme missionnaire l'exposa aussi à plusieurs perplexités et paradoxes. En plus de vivre et travailler dans l'Union d'Afrique du Sud – aujourd'hui Afrique du sud – il vécut durant de nombreuses années au Mozambique où, à certains moments, sa présence – et celle des missionnaires protestants en général – ne fut pas bien acceptée par le régime colonial portugais. Aujourd'hui les politiques d'éducation bilingues, le processus de la réinvention de l'identité Shangaan, les dilemmes multiculturels d'un Mozambique postsocialiste et le rôle des églises Protestantes dans la formation d'une société civile ne peuvent pas être compris sans une réflexion systématique et renouvelée de l'héritage d'Henri-Alexandre Junod.

Résumé Renouvelée par les expériences de la mission ouvrière et par l'essor de la mis-siologie, l'idée de mission en est venue au début des années I960 à dominer la pastorale dans son ensemble. L'idéal de « plantation » de l'Église, qui conduisait à privilégier l'installation d'infrastructures permettant l'essor du christianisme en pays de mission au détriment de la simple stratégie de conversion, a fait privilégier un engagement social qui était aussi une forme de présence silencieuse du missionnaire aux côtés des populations locales. Ce triomphe de la mission est en partie à l'origine de la crise de l'idée missionnaire qui se dessine à la fin des années I960, renforcée par la décolonisation, et de l'essor du tiers-mondisme. Si toute l'Église est devenue missionnaire, pourquoi former des clercs et des laïques spécialisés en vue de cet engagement ? Pourtant, les années 1980 et 1990 voient le retour en force de l'idée missionnaire dans l'Église catholique, sous l'effet conjoint du renouveau charismatique et de la stratégie romaine de « nouvelle évangélisation » de l'Europe. Tout débat n'est donc pas clos, entre les partisans d'une action visible de conversion du monde et les partisans d'une présence plus discrète des chrétiens au sein des sociétés modernes.

CHIVALRIC FRIENDSHIP IN FRENCH MEDIEVAL LITERATUREThe emergence in the Middle Ages of literature in the vernacular paralleled the emergence of the new, lay social elite — the chivalry. The new literature did not so much reflect as it shaped the attitudes and the axiological system embraced by medieval knights. This fact has been recognized by historians, however they seem to take atoo homogenic view of various narrative forms of ver­nacular literature. Thus, the article is an attempt to identify some crucial differences between how the two key literary genres of the times — chanson de geste and romance — represent the values crucial to the medieval knight. Chanson de geste praises communal values, and the tale’s hero, rather than an individual knight, is ablood-related family of which he is an integral member. His world is founded on values such as family solidarity and asense of responsibility for the family’s well-being. The romance, on the other hand, champions an individualistic hero, seen in isolation from his ancestral context. In the romance it is friendship, born of asense of shared social mission, that represents human relationships. Admittedly, friendship does play acertain role in the world of chanson de geste, and so do the ancestral ties in the romance. However, their role in either case is disproportionately smaller and, occasionally, both are represented unfavorably. Unlike chanson de geste and the romance, 13th century mystical roman in prose questions the value of both friendship and ancestral ties, unless they are founded on exemplary religiosity.

Abstract: The Syriac Julian Romance, a tripartite fictional account of the reign of the Emperor Julian, was hitherto only partially known from two manuscripts. This article publishes the missing first section from Vat. Sir. 37, a section that narrates the death of Constantius II. The complete text allows us to demonstrate that the narrative was composed by a single author and that the tripartite structure does not reflect three older, separate texts. Further, we identify the Miscellaneous Chronicle of 640 as the source for most of the historical information in the Romance. This implies a new date in the first half of the seventh century, which is supported by other chronological indications in the Romance.

This article develops an analysis of a verbless predicative structure attested throughout Romance: in this type of reduced clause the predicate linearly precedes the subject and is separated from it by a clear intonational break, while the missing verb is interpreted as a silent copula. I argue that this structure should be viewed as the result of three movement steps: the first step is to be identified with predicate inversion, that is, extraction of the predicate from the complement position of the predicative small clause to a higher specifier position thanks to phase extension, followed by raising of the predicate to the specifier of SubjP to check the EPP feature, and finally to the specifier of the left-peripheral projection FocusP in order to check a focus feature. The present analysis is based on the crucial, and independently motivated assumption, that the process of phase extension, produced by raising of the small clause internal relator R° to a higher functional head F°, is limited to small clauses associated with individual-level predicates. The verbless predicative structure is then compared to an analogous construction in which the preposed predicate is preceded by awh-item, arguing that, despite their apparent similarity, the two structures should be clearly distinguished.

This essay examines how Catholics at the English Jesuit College at Saint-Omer reflected on Japanese religious politics during the 1620s and 1630s, both through translated mission reports and drama. This analysis expands scholars’ view of English encounters with Japan; it also decenters predominantly Eurocentric approaches to early modern Jesuit education and theater. The essay concludes with a discussion of Shakespeare and George Wilkins's “Pericles,” a quarto playbook of which was possessed by St. Omers and which, through the generic elements of romance it shared with the Japan material, provided further opportunities for the college's Catholics to consider transcontinental religious politics.

The Smithsonian Institution’s National Air and Space Museum (NASM) remains one of the world’s most visited museums precisely because it embodies the “romance of technological progress.” From its origins in the US National Museum of the early twentieth century to the opening of its first dedicated building in 1976 and beyond, visitors have flocked to the NASM to see exhibits on the wonders of aerospace technology. An attempt to depart from that narrative in the 1990s by telling the story of the atomic bombings of Japan was crushed by an organized campaign. In the aftermath, the museum reverted to its old pattern, albeit broadened to include greater diversity in the historical actors it featured. Today, as NASM rebuilds its original building, it is again striving, albeit more cautiously, to stretch the limits of its traditional mission.

Based on the analytical theories of the historical novel listed byFLECK (2017), AÍNSA (1991) and BASILE (2002), in this paper we propose a reading of the novel ¡Bernabé!, ¡Bernabé!, by Tomás de Mattos. This starts from the problematization done about the historical event officially known as “The Massacre of Salsipuedes”. We seek to offer analytical tools for the interpretation of the novel based on the deconstruction of the character Colonel Bernabé Rivera, the commander who was the responsible for the mission that resulted in the murder of the natives Charruas during the independence process of Uruguay in the 19th century. From the reading we make of the novel, we aim to relate the interpretation of this work by Mattos (1994) to possible criticism concerning the civic-military dictatorship that ruled the country between 1973 and 1985.

Cette recherche sur les techniques mises en oeuvre pour réaliser les peintures du tombeau d’Elbeyli à Iznik combine à la fois les observations faites à l’oeil nu, au cours de la campagne de relevés et de restauration de la mission franco-turque dirigée par A. Barbet, et les analyses en laboratoire de la mission italienne conduite par M. Andaloro. La combinaison des deux démarches se confortent. Nous avons pu prouver que la technique est celle de la fresque, avec un travail préparatoire soigné où tous les procédés connus sont employés, la gamme des couleurs est habituelle et le recours à deux peintres est usuel pour l’époque romaine. L’intérêt de cette approche est d’espérer banaliser ce type de recherches ailleurs et ainsi de disposer, à l’avenir, de points d’ancrage pour tracer une évolution de l’art de peindre, de l’Antiquité au Moyen Âge, et éventuellement de déceler les étapes essentielles de cette évolution, culturelle et technique.

The parable of the Prodigal Son in Luke 15 elicits profound responses and emotions in various times, places, and cultures. Why has it stood the test of time as one of Jesus’ most famous parables? One possible answer is that the story carries enduring appeal because of the underlying structure of the parable, a recurring pattern in literature called the monomyth. Peeling back the layers of the parable, one may uncover the foundational archetypes of the parable that make it timeless. Hidden significance of the parable may be illuminated by comparing its narrative to the hero quest of Joseph Campbell and the monomyth archetypes of Northrop Frye and Leland Ryken, both of which emphasize a cyclical movement that unifies all of literature. Also important are the specific archetypes within the general monomyth archetype, such as father and mother, bread and water. The parable also contains the four elements (mythoi) of the circular monomyth: romance, tragedy, anti-romance, and comedy. Using archetypal and myth criticism, this article demonstrates that the parable has enduring attraction because its underlying archetypes appeal to a deep layer of the human psyche and to what is elemental to the human experience.

This research is background by the idea that novels are works that do not only highlight the aesthetic elements of language, but as a medium or means for authors to convey their mission and message. The novel is full of meaning, either clear or implied. Mission, motif, purpose of the author represented through the fictional characters he constructed. The purpose of the research is to reveal the form ideological hegemony in the novel Ketika Cinta Bertasbih (KCB) creation Habiburrahman el Shirazy. Research on novels KCB with the Gramsci hegemony approach the author’s knowledge is based search in online journals indexed doaj.org, in the last five years it has not been found. The research method used is descriptive qualitative. The research approach used Gramsci hegemony. The results of the research show, central figure in a novel like Khairul Azzam dan Anna Althafunnisa able to deal with life’s problems well (happines), because they believe and carry out ther ideology anda religious values. The main problem thet emerged from the two figures was like education, romance, and marriage. The process of hegemony that occurs between two figures and most of the other characters went will, so that able to dampen potential conflict between character.

The Danish East India Company (Dansk Østindisk Kompagni) was established in Europe at the beginning of the 17th century. Its stronghold in India was the city of Trankebar (Dansborg Fortress), located 250 km from Madras. In the early years of the 18th century, the first Lutheran missionaries, Bartholomäus Ziegenbalg and Heinrich Plütschau, appeared on the Coromandel Coast. It was at this time that the Danish Royal Mission, financed by King Frederick IV, was established in the Indian South. It consisted mainly of Germans, graduates of the University of Halle in Saxony, a bastion of pietism in Germany. As time passed, the number of European clergymen working in the Tranquebar grew, as did the number of local converts. Working in a large Christian community required a great deal of time and energy on the part of the missionaries. At some point, they began to use the Tranquebar neophytes for this work as well. But this did not solve all problems. Three years after their arrival in Tranquebar, the missionaries decided that some of them, Ziegenbalg himself, Plütschau, and Johann Ernst Gründler, who had just arrived in India, should marry women from Germany who would be reliable assistants in their difficult work. The prospective brides had to conform to the pietist concept of piety and devotion to the Lord. The article relates the missionaries’ search for brides in Europe and the two partnerships that resulted: Bartholomäus Ziegenbalg married Maria Dorothea Salzmann after a trip to Europe from 1714 to 1716, while his friend ohann Ernst Gründler married at Tranquebar without waiting for a bride from far away from Europe. His bride of choice was Utilia Elisabeth. These matrimonial histories provide a clearer picture of what “pietism in action” looked like in the history of the missionary movement while enlivening the history of the Christianization of the East with personal details and adding human traits to the founders of Orientalism-as Bartholomäus Ziegenbalg certainly is for Tamilism.

The present article is a teaching guide for a class or a series of classes about the discourse of Otherness, as employed in the medieval romance The King of Tars. It proposes an in-class discussion that reveals how the romance tells a story of an encounter with the Other and how it perpetuates the discourse of Otherness while doing that. Various strategies used in the tale to perform Othering are analyzed. These include the presentation of Muslims as a dehumanized outgroup, with its main representative – the Sultan – being portrayed as a beast missing the rational part of the soul; contrasting the said presentation with that of the rational Christian Princess; employing and modifying the motif of monstrous birth to define the Sultan further through his failure as a father and through the absence of what the tale sees as the essence of the human soul; setting the transforming power of the dominant group’s rituals against the ineffective, empty rituals of the out-group; the use of the rhetoric of proximity, i.e. pointing to certain similarities between “us” and “them” only to make the differences even more pronounced. The analysis of these strategies helps to recognize that while the characters within the represented world of the romance other Muslims through their actions, the narrator does the same through the use of the discourse of Otherness. The article is also devised as a review of criticism on the romance in the context of Otherness, so it can be useful as a starting point for those willing to research this matter further.

Peu après la clôture du concile de Vatican II Paul VI a réformé la Curie Romaine, y compris la Congrégation des Religieux et des Instituts laïcs par la Constitution Apostolique „Regimini Ecclesiae Universae” de 1967. L’année suivante vit la publication du Règlement Général de la Curie Romaine contenant les normes détaillées. Ainsi, dès le début de la codification du droit ecclésial la Curie Romaine a entrepris son travail sur la base des „nouvelles” normes juridiques. C’est pourquoi le Code de droit canonique promulgué en 1983 par le pape Jean Paul II ne consacre à la Curie Romaine que deux canons, contrairem ent au Code de 1917. Le législateur du Code, au can. 360 se réfère aux prescriptions spéciales qui définissent la structure et les compétences de ses dicastères et renvoie précisément aux normes publiées par le pape Paul VI. Dans son article, l’auteur, s’appuyant sur ces normes, expose la structure de l’organisation actuelle du personel, la tâche et les compétences de la Congrégation des Religieux et des Instituts laïcs. The vast Soviet lands, shattered by the Civil War and the unbearable consequences of requisitions, are overwhelmed by the famine triggered in the third decade of the last century. The mission received by the young man Deev to take by a sanitary improvised train five hundred children from a haunted by famine orphanage in Kazanul Popolgiei, to Samarkand seems a utopia. This journey through time and space, sustained by facts and historical documents, has a family connection with the author of the novel: her paternal grandfather was in an orphanage and belonged to a group of children transported towards Turkestan on such a train of hope. The polyphony of the voices and feelings of some generations marked by famine is rendered in literature, thus trying to avoid wrapping in silence histories of injustice. The prismatic narrative structure of the novel combines the unilateral perspectives of the characters in a sequence of interior monologues, confessions and authentic complementary self- analyses. The prevailing feeling of permaomunismului nent danger through the entire journey is sometimes faded away by unexpected moments of tenderness, other times by unconfessed love, by unexpected gestures of solidarity, sometimes culminating with unimaginable efforts and personal sacrifices. The orphan children’s traumas, abandoned by their parents or not understood are amplified by absolute evil unexpectedly appearing under different forms: famine, plague, treason, crime. The struggle for survival turns into a struggle for salvation of souls, thus alternating the moments of darkness with the moments of light. The novel can be considered an endless echo of questions and answers for all those who have been overwhelmed by famine despair.

Construite sur une colline dominant le village de Maad d'un côté et la vallée qui sépare le Mont-Liban du Liban Nord de l'autre, l'église de Maad, remontant à l'époque des Croisés, occupe une position stratégique donnant sur le littoral allant de Kfaraabida jusqu'à Chekka. Elle fait face par ailleurs à une place forte, elle aussi de l'époque des Croisés, la citadelle de Smar Jbeil. Si l'actuelle église dédiée à saint Charbel a été bâtie au cours de la première moitié du XIIIe s. (avec quelques remaniements plus récents) (Fig. 1), l'occupation du site, elle, remonte à l'époque hellénistique avec probablement la construction d'un temple. Ce temple semble avoir subi par la suite des remaniements à l'époque romaine. Une église byzantine, succédant, comme il est d'usage sur les sites d'époque romaine au Liban, au temple, aurait précédé l'actuelle église. Visitée par Renan, qui publia dans sa Mission de Phénicie quelques unes des inscriptions antiques qui y furent retrouvées (Renan 1864 : 240-244), l'église ne fut vraiment explorée qu'à partir de 1947, lorsque la DGA du Liban y mena quelques sondages et ensuite, vers la fin des années 1960, des fouilles plus extensives. Ces fouilles eurent pour résultat l'abaissement du sol de l'église d'environ 1 m, et la mise au jour du dallage de l'époque romaine, d'un seuil monumental derrière l'abside centrale dans la salle annexe médiane, ainsi que le mur qui lui fait pendant dans la salle annex sud.

Within comparative mythology, the study of the trickster, a figure found in many cultures around the globe, began in the mid-fifties of the last century. In this paper, we deal with the trickster myth incorporated in the novel Watership Dawn by Richard Adams, in which the legendary rabbit chief El-ahreirah is a role model for a group of rabbits in search of a new warren. El-ahreirah is based on existing mythological patterns and is a central part of the so-called Lapine culture (that is, the stories, customs and language of the rabbits that Adams invented for his novel). A cycle of five stories about the rabbit trickster is connected with the frame story, so that a parallelism is established between the two groups of characters: Hazel with his people and El-ahreirah with his. Hazel and his comrades are true to their heritage and therefore succeed in the mission of establishing a new warren (Watership Down), while facing antagonistic groups: the rabbits of the Cowslip’s Warren and the rabbits of Efrafa. Woundwort, as a main antagonist and the cultural hero of the Efrafa warren, represents a figure directly opposed to El-ahreirah, and the end of the novel, in which the general enters the myth, tells us that this conflict has only just begun.

In expounding Shakespeare’s Hamlet, a trio of important plots comes to the top with great significance; the revenge plot, the Hamlet-Ophelia romance story, and Norway’s looming war. The trio of significant plots has laid the first stone for Hamlet to procrastinate the act of revenge as it is undone until the final act of Shakespeare’s drama. On the other hand, Hamlet’s playwright gives a picture of the tradition’s direct reference using the literary device Metadrama, i.e. the play within the play exemplified by The Murder of Gonzago. Attaining true justice for his father’s murder, Hamlet beautifies The Murder of Gonzago with grim insistence; Hamlet is determined to recognize the culprit behind the death of his father. Having this uneasy mission comes true causes Hamlet to ponder and slow down about various things. Along these lines, Hamlet goes through a slow decision process to revenge on his father’s murderer. Consequently, various deaths happen, namely: Polonius, Ophelia, Rosencrantz, Guildenstern, Laertes, and Gertrude. Shakespeare’s exposition of various characters incapable of revenging heroically and determinedly draws a picture of Hamlet’s incapability to promptly avenge. Laertes, for example, plots to murder Hamlet to avenge for murdering Polonius, Laertes’s father, and in the last part of this play, Laertes successfully kills Hamlet with the poisonous sword. As various studies focus on the issues of romance, politics, and throne successions using descriptive and historical approaches, this study using the analytical approach, however, demonstrates Hamlet as a play structured on revenge, as the whole revenge events are appropriately incorporated by Shakespeare.

In contemporary Bosnian and Herzegovinian and Serbian literature, the phenomenon of an imprisoned, frustrated and unhappy thinking man in a dehumanized and limited social space is present in a significant corpus of prose works. The artistic transposition of psychological - sociological and physical - temporal social data by which the thinker is conditioned and thwarted, is interesting case for our study. The aim of this paper is to prove through an interpretive method and phenomenological approach the presence of the problem of the tragedy of a thinking man in totalitarian systems in novels - Tvrđava, Meša Selimović, Prokleta avlija, Ivo Andrić, Koreni, Dobrica Ćosić and Feniks, Muhamed Abdagić. These works present totalitarian systems that seek to thwart the thinking man in his noble mission of humanizing social relations and finding opportunities for a more beautiful, meaningful and happy life of the individual and the collective as a whole. Selimović's hero Ahmet Šabo, Andrić's fra Petar and Ćamil efendija, Ćosić's Vukašin and Abdagić's hero Šaćir, thinking existences are trapped in totalitarian systems in which their intellectual person is opposed to cruel customs of government. The tragedy of their position grows into an archetype of human unrest and rebellion against the dehumanized system of government and efforts to general humanization of social space and interpersonal relations in it.

Summary:I examine verbal prefixation analyzing the functional changes of the Latin ad- prefix from Classical Latin to Italian. In order to conduct the research properly I needed to separate the verbs in ety- mological groups directly derived from Latin (Classical, Vulgar or Late Latin) from the verbs created in the Romance period and the Latin loan verbs. The different origin of the verbs influences our expectation regarding the analyzability of a given verb (the recognisability of the prefix as an independent element and its semantic value - which can be different from that of its Latin origin). This division is not as clear cut as it seems to be, because, in the case of the Italian, phonetic evidence in favour of one group or another is often missing. I present the possible solutions I found for the grouping problems using semantic evidence, comparison with the other Romance languages, dating of the given verb, etc. Furthermore, I highlight the general and specific factors which determine the assignment of a certain verb to a certain group in order to obtain a precise but still flexible set of verbal categories.

The article highlights attempts to establish official intergovernmental relations between the Belarusian People’s Republic and the Ukrainian People’s Republic in 1917–1920. The article also pays attention to the creation of the Belarusian People's Republic, the persons of its representatives and attempts to preserve the Belarusian statehood. The author stresses that the first official contacts had already been started before the proclamation of the independence of the BPR. Relying upon archival information from the funds of the Ukrainian and Belarusian archival institutions, the activities of the Belarusian foreign missions in the UPR and the Ukrainian State are highlighted. Accomplishments of the Ukrainian, Belarusian and Polish historiography regarding the study of the history of interstate relations between the UPR and BPR are considered. The paper analyses the position of Belarusian representatives in the negotiation process with the Ukrainian side. It is specified that the Belarusian delegation having the right to deliberative vote included prominent Belarusians, who resided in Kyiv: M. Dovnar-Zapolskyi, I. Kraskovskyi, F. Burchak. Attempts to gain recognition of the BPR by Ukraine are studied. Special attention is paid to the role of the representatives of the BPR (F. Burchak, A. Tsvikevych, S. Rak-Mykhailovskyi, P. Trempovych), the undisclosed facts about their life paths are revealed. Its introduction aimed to eradicate the discriminatory inequity in the address system that exposed women through their (non)marital relationship with men. The understanding, use and impact of the courtesy title are fairly well documented, particularly for Englishes of Australia (e.g. Pauwels 1987; 1998; 2001; 2003), US and Britain (Romaine 2001) and New Zealand (Holmes 2001). We have little knowledge of the form’s spread, impact and use by speakers for whom English is not the dominant language but forms part of their linguistic repertoire. Graddol (1997) argues that English-speaking bilinguals will outnumber first language speakers and, ‘increasingly will decide the global future of the language’ (p.10). Such contexts of English – second / third / foreign – usage loosely align with locales Kachru (1997) identified as ‘expanding circles’, and to some extent, many of the ‘outer circle’ Englishes, e.g. Hong Kong. In this paper we take up a new direction in feminist language planning: the exploration of courtesy title use and practices by English-speaking mono-/bi-/multilingual women around the world. We draw upon online survey data (available from http://www.teagirl.arts.uwa.edu.au/) to probe respondents’ strategies for addressing unknown women, as well as women’s use of courtesy titles for themselves. Our mapping of practices associated with Ms reveals an unexpected pattern of diffusion with implications for evaluating planned social language change. In relation to Ms, the implementation of feminist linguistic policy does not cohere with a pattern of spread from inner to outer to expanding ‘circles’ of English or from ‘first language speaker’ to … ‘foreign language speaker’ diffusion. The locale and personal contexts associated with education, awareness and personal commitment to gender equity interact in complicating, and surprising ways. Indeed our research exposes a new directionality for Ms as a preferred form for unknown women, without necessarily implicating its use in self-naming for many bilingual women resident in ‘outer circle’ locales.

RESUMO: Este artigo apresenta a relação da personagem Arthur com as atividades na cozinha, mais precisamente a fabricação de pão e manteiga, como um modo de favorecimento de sua construção narrativa (seguindo as proposições da holandesa Mieke Bal) no romance The Solid Mandala (1966), do escritor australiano Patrick White, prêmio Nobel de Literatura em 1973. A partir de trechos selecionados, demonstramos como se dá essa atividade na trama e todas as repercussões advindas delas, destacando a socialização entre personagens, mas principalmente a constituição identitária de Arthur: é ele quem tem a “missão” de fazer esses produtos que, inevitavelmente, vão sustentar a ele e a seu irmão até o final de suas vidas (desse modo negando a “trivialidade” da atividade). Se esse romance demonstra o poder que a literatura possui de transcender a nossa mera existência em qualquer espaço, podemos fazer a mesma analogia com a culinária: a literatura está para a cozinha assim como a cozinha está para a literatura, alimentando seres. PALAVRAS-CHAVE: Literatura Australiana, Patrick White, Cozinha, Personagem, Narrativa, Tradução. ______________________________ ABSTRACT: This paper analyses the relationship of the character Arthur with his activities in the kitchen, more precisely the baking of bread and churning of butter, as a way to favour his narrative construction in the novel The Solid Mandala (1966), by the Australian writer Patrick White, who won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1973. From selected excerpts, we demonstrate how these activities takes place in the plot and all the repercussions coming from them, highlighting socialization among the characters, but mainly the identity formation of Arthur: he is the one who has the “mission” to make these products which, inevitably, will sustain him and his brother until the end of their lives (thus denying the “triviality” of such works). If this novel proves how powerful literature is in making us transcend our mere existence in any space, we can make an analogy with cooking: as literature is to cooking so cooking is to literature, nurturing beings. Catechetic is the coaching of children, youth and adults in the faith, which is specific to the delivery of the Christian movement, which is basically given organically and systematically, The Catholic Religion teacher deeply embraces her duties and mission through her work at school. This work is the duty and mission that comes from God himself. The Catholic Religion teacher is expected to earnestly live his vocation as a religious teacher. A Catholic teacher is an educator as well as a journalist. An educator or reporter will be able to carry out his duties well if he has a clear and correct understanding of what is actually the purpose of teaching Catholicism as a means of preaching the love of Jesus. A Religion Teacher is a person whose job is to teach another person or an emulated and imitated person. It means that the word is imitated and imitated by faith and deeds by dodging the Christian life. STKIP Widya Yuwana is an institution owned by the diocese of Surabaya aimed at educating prospective catechists and religious teachers. The institute was originally founded by Paul Janssen, CM under the name AKI (Indonesian Catechetical Academy) which aims to produce a militant and powerful catechist. According to the times, AKI has changed into STKIP Widya Yuwana. As the name implies, this institution is then identified as a producer of religious teachers, and even the impression that this institution no longer exists on the path of Jansen's romance as a catechist producer, and turned into a producer of Catholic religious teachers. This research is needed to photograph what really happened to the students. Is it true that the outward impression that graduates and students are more likely to be teachers? If so, what is the motivation behind it? Is it really a catechist profession is not promising, or indeed STKIP Widya Yuwana who had already lost the spirit of the founder of its predecessor?

This study aimed to analyze and explicate the influence of the advent of Latin script (Roman script) on the progress of Malay-Arabic script culture, language, and religion in the archipelago. The arrival of Islam had a major influence on the language, religion, and culture of the archipelago through a script, known as the Malay Arabic script. In the archipelagic history, the reconstruction of local culture through an Arabic-Malay script has affected the growth and progress of civilization. The use of the Malay-Arabic script around the 13th century in the writing tradition in schools and Islamic boarding schools as a medium made it easier to read the Qur'an, to study Arabic grammar, and to learn various aspects of other scientific fields. After that, the situation changed due to the emergence of the Romance script in the 15th century, which was brought by Europeans to the Malay world or the Archipelago. Based on the type of qualitative research using a historical approach, it showed that there was a contestation of the Arabic-Malay script with the emergence of the Romance script in Indonesia. This could be seen from the following: 1) The position of the Arabic-Malay script, which had been popular in society and was entrenched in formal and normal institutions, had been increasingly lost due to the appearance of the Roman script. 2) It was difficult to find references related to religious, social, cultural, and political sciences written in the Arabic-Malay script. 3) The transition from using the Arabic-Malay script to the Roman script also had a religious mission, namely the eradication of Islamic symbols marked by many generations who did not understand the Arabic-Malay script as a medium to make it easier to read the Qur'an and understand religion. Based on this data, it is demonstrated that the study of Arabic-Malay script in today's society is decreasing, and the longer the majesty of the Arabic-Malay script as the Lingua Franca in archipelago civilization can be forgotten if it is not preserved and implemented in formal and non-formal education in Indonesia.

Resumo: O presente trabalho procura demonstrar certas peculiaridades presentes no romance A fome, publicado pelo brasileiro Rodolfo Teófilo em 1890. Embora geralmente associado à Escola Naturalista (e até mesmo um precursor do Neorrealismo de 1930), observamos características que destoam da estética proposta por esse movimento, e em certa medida aproximam a obra da prosa romântica que se desenvolvera no Brasil nas décadas anteriores. Outrossim, nosso texto procura investigar as possíveis relações entre as escolhas formais feitas pelo autor nessa obra e suas intervenções mais objetivas na sociedade em que estava inserido, a fim de averiguar qual seria, na visão de Teófilo, a missão do intelectual no Ceará de fins do século XIX.Palavras-chave: Rodolfo Teófilo; A fome; naturalismo; romantismo.Abstract: This work intends to demonstrate some peculiarities of the novel A fome, written by the Brazilian author Rodolfo Teófilo in 1890. Although it is usually associated with the Naturalistic School (and even a precursor of the 1930’s Neorealism), we see features that clash with this movement, and in a certain way bring the book closer to the romantic narrative that developed in Brazil in the previous decades. Furthermore, our work tries to investigate the possible relations between the author’s stylistic choices in this novel and his more objective interventions in the society in which he lived, in order to find out what it would be, in Teófilo’s vision, the mission of an intellectual in the Ceará region at the end of the 19th century.Keywords: Rodolfo Teófilo; A fome; naturalism; romanticism.

ABSTRACT: “Lolita” written by Vladimir Nabokov has been considered as an important occasion in the history of world literature for its theme and concept of its characters. The novel written in an original way with distinctive creativity has been subject to debates and various evaluations. Humbert is one of the main characters in the novel “Lolita” with literary mission, serving to demonstrate several psychological, moral and physiological problems, reflecting reasons and effects of various problems that were actual for the society during that time. Since “Lolita” was written during the period when postmodernism influence was observed in the works of Nabokov, it is very noticeable to find postmodern tendencies in the writer’s style and in his main character. Freud’s psychoanalytic theory and its interpretation have played a crucial role in revealing Humbert’s specificity. While assesing Humbert in this context, author’s original approach becomes apparent due to some occasions which are caused by psychological and physiological problems. For this purpose, research on interpretation of Humbert’s stance showed that Humbert’s attitude towards Lolita and his controversial traits are presented in comparison with Freud psychoanalytic theory. Comparative analysis has showed that Humbert is a character who directly affects interpretation of characters and evaluation of events. So, it involves tendencies of that time and takes upon a mission to analyze existing wishes of human that can’t be openly expressed and to reveal threats that are triggered by those traits. ÖZET: Vladimir Nabokov’un Lolita romanı konusu, olay örgüsü, karakterleri bakımından Dünya edebiyatı tarihinde önemli romanlardan biridir. Nabokov’un kendine has üslubuyla kaleme aldığı eseri çeşitli yönleriyle tartışmalara neden olmuş ve farklı şekillerde değerlendirilmiştir. Yazar, Humbert karakterine özel bir edebi misyon yüklemiş; psikolojik, manevi, fizyolojik problemlerin gündeme getirilmesini, nedenleri ve sonuçları ile tartışılmasını sağlamıştır.Nobakov’un eserlerinde sıklıkla postmodernizm yansımaları görüldüğü gibi, Lolita romanında da postmodern eğilimler sezilmektedir.Z.Freud’un Psikanaliz Teorisi’nin Humbert’in roman kahramanı özelliklerinin belirlenmesinde etkili olduğunu düşünmemizi gerektirecek pek çok veri mevcuttur. Romanda bu teorinin temellerini oluşturan meseleler tartışılmaktadır. Humbert karakterini Freud’un Psikanaliz Teorisi’ne göre değerlendirdiğimizde Nabokov’un kendine has yaklaşımıyla karakterin psikolojik, fizyolojik problemlerini, onların neden olduğu olayları nasıl ortaya çıkardığını incelemek mümkündür. Bu makalede Lolita romanında Humbert’in misyonu yorumlanırken, Lolita ile ilişkisi, kimliğindeki çelişkili durumlar, Freud’un Psikanaliz Teorisi’ne göre karşılaştırılmıştır. Bu karşılaştırma sonrasında Humbert karakterinin Nobakov’un diğer kahramanlarının kişisel özelliklerinin incelenmesine olanak sağlayacağı anlaşılmıştır. Eserde, insanın açık şekilde yorumlanamayan hislerinin analizi ve onların neden olduğu tehlikeleri ortaya çıkarmak için Humbert karakterine özel misyon yüklenmiş olduğu anlaşılmıştır.

By the mid-nineteenth century up to 1910, stories of a love affair between a European colonial and a native woman were missing in European settler writing. The point is that these stories were not allowed any more. The reasons for which they were no longer allowed and the way the European imperialists and the colonized people viewed these interracial romances were among the things which motivated Abdulrazak Gurnah to write Desertion (2005). In this novel, he explores the love relationship between a British colonial, Martin Pearce, and a Zanzibari woman, Rehana Zakariya, and how this affair was determinant in the failure of Amin and Jamila’s romance. One may wonder whether Rehana’s bad reputation is simply due to the fact that she was in love with a European man. One may also wonder whether Jamila’s tarnished name is only caused by the fact that she is Rehana’s granddaughter. From a cultural and postcolonial perspective, the paper will deal with Woman’s Virtue in Gurnah’s Desertion. Based on postcolonialism, racism and culture as theories, the study will analyze, on the one hand, the way the two main female protagonists in Desertion are viewed in their community and, on the other hand, the sad end of the love relationship between Amin and Jamila.
