Streszczenie:
One of the most important problems of modern solar physics is the observation of the small-scale structure of the solar atmosphere at various heights (including the chromosphere and corona) in different spectral lines. Such observations can be made only with large solar telescopes whose main mirror has a diameter of at least 3 m. Currently, several large solar telescopes are under construction or development in the world. In 2013 in Russia, the work began on the development of a national large solar telescope with a mirror 3 m in diameter (LST-3), which is a part (subproject) of the National Heliogeophysical Complex of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The telescope is planned to be located in the Sayan Solar Observatory at an altitude of more than 2000 m. The choice was made in favor of the classic axisymmetric Gregory optical layout on an alt-azimuth mount. The scientific equipment of LST-3 will consist of several systems of narrow-band tunable filters and spectrographs for various wave ranges. The equipment will be placed both in the main coude focus on a rotating platform and in the Nasmyth focus. To achieve a diffraction resolution, high-order adaptive optics (AO) will be used. It is assumed that with a certain modification of the optical configuration, LST-3 will work as a 0.7 m mirror coronograph in near infrared lines and can also be used for observing astrophysical objects in the nighttime.

Streszczenie:
Abstract: The study aims to assess the applying effectiveness of constructed wetland technology for polluted surface water treatment. The experimental models were operated with 2 hydraulic loadings of 500mL/min/m2 (T1) and 1500mL/min/m2 (T2). The reed grass (Phragmites australis) was selected for the studying process. The surface water resource was removed from the pollutant components (TSS, BOD5, COD) and harmful microorganisms (fecal coliform) which aim to protect the water quality and aquatic ecosystems. The results showed the treatment effectiveness of loading of 500mL/min/m2 is higher than the loading of 1500mL/min/m2, especially in the reed planting trial. In particular, the treatment efficiency of pollutants such as TSS, BOD5, COD reached a high rate of 85%, 90%, and 87%, respectively. In addition, ANOVA statistical analysis showed the effectiveness of water quality parameters belong to two loadings were statistically significant (P<0.05). Thus, the surface water pollutant removal by subsurface vertical flow constructed wetland technology could be contributed to promoting the sustainable agricultural development. In this thesis, we contribute to the modeling, simulation and optimization of a new generation of micro mirror arrays designed by the Astrophysics Laboratory of Marseille (LAM). A contribution is also made to the development of MEMSALab a symbolic computation software package designed to asist multiscale model derivation for microsystem arrays. The coupling between the quasi-static nonlinear behavior of a cell of the micro-mirror array and the electrostatic field used for its actuation is simulated. The simulation is then used to study the phenomenon of pull-in and its optimization. Then, a homogenized model for the electrostatic field in the vacuum space surrounding in the micro-mirror array has been built using an asymptotic method. The contributions to the development of MEMSALab consist in the introduction of an extension and combination theory that will be used to construct multiscale models based on various asymptotic approaches by a process of successive complexifications. Finally, a complete specification language for using MEMSALab is presented and illustrated by significant examples. In particular, it was used to encode the derivation of a homogenized model that serves as an initial state to the extension-combination method

AbstractAbove- and belowground systems are linked via plant chemistry. In forested systems, leaf litter chemistry and quality mirror that of green foliage and have important afterlife effects. In systems where belowground inputs dominate, such as grasslands, or in ecosystems where aboveground biomass is frequently removed by burning or harvesting, foliar traits may provide important information regarding belowground inputs via exudates and fine-root turnover. Many, if not most, of the plant traits that drive variation in belowground processes are also measurable via remote sensing technologies. The ability of remote sensing techniques to measure fine-scale biodiversity and plant chemistry over large spatial scales can help researchers address ecological questions that were previously prohibitively expensive to address. Key to these potential advances is the idea that remotely sensed vegetation spectra and plant chemistry can provide detailed information about the function of belowground processes beyond what traditional field sampling can provide.

AbstractThe MIROR Project (2010–2013) was a large-scale international research project financed by the EU, involving various researchers from six countries. It dealt with the development of an adaptive system (artificial intelligence, AI) for music learning and teaching in the context of early childhood music education. The project was based on a spiral design approach, involving coupled interactions between the technical partners and the research partners (from the disciplines of psychology and pedagogy/education). It raised methodological challenges concerning how the experiments and technology were designed, as they did not relate to Swedish preschool tradition, which will serve here as the contextualised case from which more general issues will be discussed. Different ethical issues were also faced in regard to how the research was planned, and stemming from the fact that there were commercial interests involved.

The world is always subject to crises and many times significant developments or changes occur in the aftermath of a crisis. In this regard, any crisis can be viewed as a turning point or critical juncture, though typically characterized by ambiguity, volatility and grave worries about the future. A crisis can cause continuing existential and socio-economic impacts; however, it also provides opportunities for creativity and innovation by re-imagining and reconfiguring the strategic purpose of organizations. Crises are apposite circumstances for reflection on management approaches, decision-making and the overall stability and sustainability of any system within which individual organizations operate. Arguably, any crisis prompts change to systems and organizations analogous to its scale and extent of multifaceted impacts. The recent COVID-19 pandemic is a case in point of a multifaceted crisis as it is not only a health emergency. It entirely disrupted the social world and its commerce bringing about serious repercussions to the everyday life of people. The event sector, being a mirror of society, has been affected dramatically. Compulsory closures and regulations regarding social distancing led to innumerable postponements or cancellations of planned events, from the Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo to the smallest of community celebrations. Professional and amateur sports alike postponed or cancelled their seasons. Businesses of all scales all along the supply chain, including the venues, entertainers, and suppliers of goods and services, suffered enormous economic losses.

This chapter presents a physical simulator for needle steering in brachytherapy. As the user inserts the needle in a phantom tissue, images of the needle and prostate shape reconstructed from 2D transverse ultrasound images are displayed online in a semi-transparent mirror. During insertion, the user sees the images as if they were floating inside the phantom accounting for scale and orientation. The ultrasound images of the needle are combined with a needle-tissue interaction model that predicts the needle deflection further along the insertion process. The necessary manoeuvres that bring the needle towards its intended target location are displayed to the user along with the actual needle location. This platform allows the user to test different manual and robotic-assisted needle steering techniques. Reported experimental results confirm the accuracy of the system in reconstructing and overlaying images onto the phantom.

Streszczenie:
A multiscale design methodology is proposed in this paper to facilitate the design of hierarchical material and product systems with the consideration of random field uncertainty that propagates across multiple length scales. Based on the generalized hierarchical multiscale decomposition pattern in multiscale modeling, a set of computational techniques are developed to manage the complexity of multiscale design under uncertainty. Novel design of experiments and metamodeling strategies are proposed to manage the complexity of propagating random field uncertainty through three generalized levels of transformation: the material microstructure random field, the material property random field, and the probabilistic product performance. Multilevel optimization techniques are employed to find optimal design solutions at individual scales. A hierarchical multiscale design problem that involves a 2-scale (submicro- and miro-scales) material design and a macro-scale product (bracket) design is used to demonstrate the applicability and benefits of the proposed methodology.

Streszczenie:
This paper presents component performance results of a new parabolic trough collector array driving an organic Rankine cycle (ORC) power generation system. The system has been installed in the National Solar Energy Centre at CSIRO Energy Technology in Newcastle, NSW, Australia. It consists of four rows of 18 parabolic mirrors each in a 2×2 matrix with a total aperture area of approximately 132m2. The absorber tube is a laterally aligned, 40mm copper tube coated with a semi-selective paint and enclosed in a 50mm non-evacuated glass tube to reduce convection losses. The mirror modules, which are light-weight and robust, are made from thin low iron back silvered glass bonded to a sheet steel substrate. They are supported by a box truss on semi circular hoops running on rollers for single axis tracking. The mirror design has been chosen to allow low-cost manufacturing as well as simple commissioning and operation. The ORC unit is a FP6 unit sourced from Freepower Ltd. with a net power output of 6kWel at 180°C inlet temperature and a total heat input of 70 kWth. It uses a two-stage expansion process with hydrofluoroether as the working fluid. A wet cooling tower is used to dissipate the reject heat from the ORC. The two key components of the envisioned system are the trough reflector/receiver and the ORC unit. The optical performance of the mirror elements was investigated with regard to the flux mapping onto the receiver tube. The ORC unit has been tested separately using an electrical oil heater as the heat source. This paper presents results for irradiation capture and intensity over the receiver width of a single trough mirror module. The complete system including trough collectors and ORC has not been in transient operation yet, thus experimental steady-state results of the ORC unit are presented.

Streszczenie:
As transistor densities on integrated circuits (ICs) continue to grow, off-chip bandwidth is becoming an ever-increasing performance-limiting bottleneck in systems. Electronic multichip module (MCM) and printed circuit board (PCB) packaging technology has not kept pace with the growth of inter-chip interconnection requirements. Recent advances in “smart pixel” technology offer the potential to use optical interconnects to overcome the inter-chip I/O bottleneck by linking dense arrays of Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers (VCSELs) and photodetectors. For optical interconnections to be relevant to real systems they must be able to be manufactured and packaged inexpensively and robustly. This paper discusses an optical design and packaging approach that utilizes multiple sizes (or scales) of optical elements to simplify the design of the optical interconnection and coupling while providing an enhanced degree of insensitivity to misalignments inherent in the packaging of these systems. The scales of the optical elements described are: the size of the IC (termed macrooptical), the size of the pitch of optical IO (termed microoptical), and sizes in between (termed mini-optical) which are smaller than the size of the IC but cover several optical IO. This paper describes the utility of elements of each of these scales and shows that through the combination of them simple robust systems can be constructed. Two case studies for applying this multi-scale optical design are examined. The first case study is a global chip-to-chip optical interconnection module (termed FAST-Net) that uses a macro lens array and mirror to effect the all-to-all optical interconnection pattern among an array of ICs on a single board. Micro- and mini-scale optical elements simplify the design of the macro-lens by performing corrections at scales where they are more effective. In this system over 11,000 optical links are implemented across a 5 inch multi-chip module with diffraction limited RMS spot sizes and registration errors less than 5 microns. The second case study analyzes designs for board-to-board optical interconnections with throw-distances ranging from 1 millimeter to several centimeters. In this case micro- and mini-scale optical interconnections provide insensitivity to misalignments. The results show the feasibility of an optical coupler that can tolerate the typical packaging misalignments of 5 to 10 mil without placing rigid constraints on the angular sensitivity of the modules. The multi-scale optical interconnection and coupling concept is shown to provide an approach to simplifying design and packaging — and therefore the costs — associated with implementing optical interconnection systems.

BrightSource solar power plants consist of fields of tens of thousands of mirrors, spread across kilometers of open areas. These huge mirrors are in constant motion, reflecting the sun’s rays on to the solar thermal collector. Maintaining high reflectivity of the mirrors is essential for the solar field’s performance, a task that becomes complex when expanded to encompass the solar field’s features. The solution for mirror cleaning must be efficient, cost-effective, time-saving, and easy to maintain for dozens of years. BrightSource has designed and constructed a system of GPS-based mirror washing machines (MWMs) that are controlled and managed by end-to-end software. The system generates optimized cleaning tasks, positions the mirrors, and efficiently controls the navigation and state of the MWMs with their 25-meter-long extendable cranes. All of these actions together provide an optimal mirror cleaning solution. This article describes the BrightSource cleaning control technology, for example, in the Ivanpah project, the world’s largest solar thermal facility. The Ivanpah solar field includes 173,500 heliostats divided among three solar fields. Each heliostat holds two mirrors of approximately 2.5 × 3.5 meters, all of which require periodic cleaning. Specifically, this article addresses issues such as the following: • The mirror washing machine (MWM) types: truck and tractor-based, and their differing usage in the solar field • Designation and choice of the cleaning area • Estimation of the stopping points in the designated area, and association of the mirrors to clean from each stopping point • Cleaning time optimization: stopping point density, order in which to clean heliostats, and heliostat position during cleaning • Heliostat positioning: opening clear corridors through which the MWM can travel, and setting heliostats in cleaning orientations • Receiving and responding to callback messages from the MWMs, such as cleaning progress and machine faults • Working in the real world: resources shared with the power plant, and recovery from system faults

Abstract Solar energy plays a vital role in the future of clean energy production due to its availability all year round. Some prominent solar energy technologies, e.g. concentrating solar power (CSP), have the ability to focus/concentrate sunlight for large-scale commercial use. Meanwhile for smaller-scale residential use, solar water heating (SWH) systems are often used to provide hot water for household applications, where the solar collectors are the main components of such systems. The type of solar collector of interest in this study is the heat pipe evacuated tube collector (HPETC). To enhance the system’s thermal and optical efficiencies, this study investigates the incorporation of a custom-made involuted reflector mirror to a single HPETC through employing SolTrace’s optical ray tracing method, where the heat flux around the circumference of the absorber tube can be obtained. The maximum and averaged heat flux is compared between a traditional HPETC system and the HPETC system with the involuted reflectors. The result from this study showed that the HPETC system with an optimized involuted reflector experiences up to ∼ 55.3 % increase in maximum heat flux, and an increase up to ∼ 81.2 % in average heat flux across the absorber tube. Consequently, the HPETC incorporating the custom-made involuted reflectors yields to more collected heat and is capable of providing more hot water to be used for residential SWH applications.

The next generation of optical telescopes will employ highly segmented primary mirrors, which leads to a large-scale control problem. The distributed modeling technique allows for the design of scalable decentralized controllers that are better suited for such systems. A numerical seven segment mirror surface model is used as the benchmark system for comparing the performance between a scalable decentralized H∞ controller and a global H∞ controller. The closed-loop control simulation results show that both controllers perform comparably for the benchmark case. However when the number of the segments increases significantly (e.g. > 100) the scalable decentralized control will allow for a more tractable solution than the monolithic global control.

Streszczenie:
We demonstrate a new type of adaptive imaging system capable of improving the quality of phase-distorted images of extended objects. The operational algorithm was based on optimization of the spectral image quality criteria suggested in [1]. For adaptive control of the nine-electrode semi-passive bimorph mirror we used gradient optimization algorithms. To introduce slowly varying large scale phase distortions into the imaging system a second deformable mirror with computer control was used. Small scale phase distortions were created using the nonlinear optics technique described in [2]. Image quality criteria were measured using the optical image quality analyzer described in [1].
