Tourniquet Mirage, a piece for orchestra and processed sound, is based on the recitation of a poem of the same name. Recitations are recorded and altered electronically through granulation and phase vocoding. Granular synthesis cuts audio up into "short sound grains" and combines them into a sequence of grains to form a longer final output. Phase vocoding uses Fourier analysis to analyze audio and represent it as a series of amplitudes, phases, and frequencies. The phase vocoder then uses this information to manipulate the audio without altering the overall structure of the waveform.The processed sound part is closely linked to the music in the orchestra. This is as a result of developing the pitch-material of the orchestra by spectrally analyzing the processed audio. At certain times, the relationship between the electronics part and the sound of the orchestra is blurred. To accomplish this, the related formal sections of the orchestra are situated in a canonic relationship with respect to the processed-sound part. The thesis is in two parts: an analysis and an orchestral score.

Mirage of the Mountains is a work for chamber ensemble, scored for flute (doubling on piccolo), clarinet, oboe, bassoon, horn, trumpet, violins (two players), viola, violoncello, double bass, piano and percussion (two players). The instrumentation decisions came from my studies of Gèrard Grisey's second and third movements, Periodes (1974) and Partiels (1975), of Les Espaces Acoustiques (1974-1985). As each movement unfolds, the piece experiences a growth in the number of performers starting with solo viola and finishing as a full orchestra. The ensemble I have assembled for Mirage of the Mountains is what I consider the difference between these two movements; it is six more instrumentalists than Periodes and five less than Partiels. Mirage of the Mountains finds its pitch material from the spectral analysis of two pitches on the contrabass, F1 and C1. This also requires the contrabass to have a C extension on the lowest string. The purpose of choosing these two pitches is one of form. The piece is in three sections, whose first and last section are based on the spectral analysis of the contrabass' F1 and the middle section using the spectral analysis from C1. This creates an overall formal structure of I-V-I throughout the work. The string with the C extension of the contrabass is also used to create form in another way. As the middle section is based on the spectral analysis of C1 of the contrabass, it also creates the opportunity to perform open string harmonics on the contrabass, violoncello and viola, as these are the lowest strings found on these instruments. Thus, in the middle section, these instruments have extended sections of harmonic glissandi that are unique to this portion of the piece. The violins also help to extend the range and color of the partials developed in the open harmonics of the other instruments by playing the upper nodes in the highest register of the G string. The partials used in this section range from the first partial to the 24th partial of C1. The title, Mirage of the Mountains, is a correlation between a spectrum analysis and the characteristics of a mountain. The premise is that the lowest part of a mountain is less steep and much wider at the base, just as the first partial of a spectral analysis is wider in distance and more audible because of its sound properties. As the terrain closer to the top of a mountain becomes more jagged, steep and narrow with more frequent peaks, the higher partials of a spectral analysis also become more frequent in relation to others preceding and following it. When looking at a mountain from a distance, it is also hard to discern all of the peaks that occur near the top, just as it is hard to discern each upper partial of a sound. Mirage of the Mountains is an aural depiction of the spectral structure of these sounds as it relates to a mountainous region and attempts to build an image through depth, form and texture.

This dissertation revisits Brazil's experience with multiple exchange rates (MERs) between 1953 and 1961. Exchange controls such as MERs were common across the world during the early days of the Bretton Woods arrangement, despite the resistance from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which assumed they caused instability and balance of payments crises. Latin America’s use of exchange controls was widespread, with different exchange rates also adopted as instruments to stimulate import substitution industrialization (ISI). Brazil’s MER system was, however, a unique experiment, with all the country’s imports included in a regime of auctions of foreign exchange, resulting in a controlled depreciation process with different sectoral exchange rates. The experience had two phases, the first of which diverged from other cases in the region in lasting much longer, maintaining stable macroeconomic conditions, and avoiding IMF interventions. The second phase resulted in a decline of the system's macroeconomic effectiveness and its eventual collapse in 1961. This research investigates the peak and decline of Brazil’s MER systems by analyzing a new quantitative dataset that is further complemented by qualitative sources. The main thesis is that Brazil’s MER regime was a ‘successful’ experience during its first phase, with a singular design that supported the stabilization of macroeconomic conditions. Officials were ‘guiding the invisible hand’ of the market to help balance macroeconomic variables. The dissertation also shows that the MER system was not a protectionist instrument to stimulate import substitution in advanced sectors and did not generate distortions to sectoral industrial growth. It was, however, transformed during its second phase into a mechanism to subsidize private sector imports and increase the government’s direct participation in the industrial effort, which was an industrial deepening process with costly macroeconomic consequences.

This thesis is a problematisation of the development and implementation of professional standards as the mechanism to enhance professionalism and teacher quality in the teaching force within Australia and, more specifically, Queensland. Drawing on tools from Foucauldian archaeological analysis, the dominant discourses of professionalism from the academic literature, Australian federal and state policy documents and narratives from Queensland teachers are examined. These data sets are then cross referenced, analysing the intersections and divergences between the different texts. Findings suggest that through policy, political strategy and derisory statements from various authoritative voices, the managerial discourse of professionalism through professional standards documents has been unduly privileged as a means of regulating teachers, despite the fact that teachers themselves do not share this dominant notion of professionalism. The teachers in this study proffer ‘new classical-practical professionalism’ as a counter discourse, or discourse of resistance, to managerialism. However, an application of Foucault’s theorisations on power-knowledge reveals that their spoken discourses mean they are in fact yielding to the discourse of professional standards as docile bodies.

En prenant appui sur une enquête que nous avons menée entre 2006 et 2013 auprès de groupes d’acteurs ayant participé à une formation professionnelle intitulée « Autonomie de l’Acteur » et conduite par le centre Ayn Seyir, nous avons tâché de décrire la discipline théâtrale européenne contemporaine dans sa complexité, à travers un filtre analytique métadisciplinaire. Par le regard de ces artistes déplacés entre France et Turquie, nous voyons se dessiner l’esprit d’une culture des acteurs professionnels de théâtre, à deux niveaux : interne et externe. L’on remarque ainsi, au niveau interne, une faille entre pensée et pratique, qui semblerait vouée, d’une certaine manière, à sa propre insolvabilité. Lorsqu’on envisage la discipline en ses aspects externes, l’on note que celle-ci semble prise dans un vertige entre phénomènes de singularisation et de globalisation. Et si tout cela n’était que la marque d’un fait culturel en train de se réinventer par ses hiatus, pour ne (re)devenir que la paraphrase de ce qu’il était déjà ? Le théâtre ne semblerait plus être alors pour ces acteurs qu’un art au fonctionnement aporétique, conduisant à l’anomie. Mais ce métier ainsi éprouvé, s’oppose à la somme des idéaux que ces artistes évoquent et qui semblerait faire sens vers un désir de réalisation quasi-anagogique : une voie poétique. Entrer dans cette voie supposerait, en premier lieu, un abandon des illusions présidant à leur approche factuelle de la discipline : la démarche raisonnée d’un tamisage, pour peut-être tenter de résoudre certains des aspects du défi posé par la complexité du théâtre en tant que fait culturel en permanente mutationBy leading a field investigation between 2006 and 2013 with groups of actors who participated to an unique professional training called « Autonomy of the Actor » with Ayn Seyir Center, we tried to describe the theatrical fact in its complexity, as these actors are practicing and perceiving it, through the analytical filter of metadisciplinarity. By the look of these artists moved from their cultural area, between France and Turkey, we see a theater culture taking shape at two levels for these actors: internal and external. Thus, we notice at an internal level, a flaw between thought and practics, which seems to be consigned, in a certain way, to insolvency. And when we considerate the discipline in its external aspects, we notice that it is taken in a vertigo between super-individualization and globalization phenomenons. What if all of this was the mark of a cultural fact being reinvented by its hiatus, to only become again the paraphrase of what it was before? Then, theater would seem only be for these actors the illusion of an illusion : an art with an aporetic functionning, leading to lawlessness. But this art in this perception, is opposed to the sum of consensual ideals endlessly evoqued by these artists, who are all heading for a quasi-anagogic realization: a poetics path. To enter in this path presupposes at first abandoning their factual approach of theatre: a reasoned approach of a sifting, which may allow us to resolve certain aspects of the challenge of theatre’s complexity, considered as a cultural fact in crisis

Ausstellung kuratiert von Mathias WagnerDie Ausstellungsbroschüren des „Projektraum am Weißen Hirsch. Galerie Grafikladen“ dokumentieren die Ausstellungstätigkeit eines nicht institutionellen Ausstellungsraumes in Dresden zwischen 2010 und 2016. Die Galerie widmete sich dem Werk zeitgenössischer junger Künstler, vorwiegend Meisterschüler und Absolventen, die in der Regel einen biografischen Bezug zu Dresden haben. Das Ausstellungskonzept war offen für die verschiedensten künstlerischen Ausdrucksformen – von Malerei über Fotografie bis zu performativen Ansätzen. Jährlich fanden vier bis fünf, von wechselnden Kuratoren entwickelte Ausstellungen statt. Im August 2016 eröffnete die vorerst letzte Ausstellung.

L’Institut Clément Ader Albi (ICAA) et l’Institut von Karman (IVK) mènent depuis un certain nombre d’années des travaux sur la radiométrie IR dans le but de faire de la thermographie quantitative (mesure de température vraie sans contact). Ces travaux ont permis d’explorer les potentialités de plusieurs bandes spectrales : 8-12µm, 3-5µm et plus récemment la bande 0,75-1,7µm (proche IR) à l’aide de caméras CCD (Si) ou VisGaAs. Les travaux effectués dans ce domaine spectral ont permis de mettre en évidence un certains nombre de perturbations renforcées par les hautes températures(T>800°C). Cette thèse aborde de façon détaillée le traitement d’un certain nombre de grandeurs d’influence liées à la mesure de différents paramètres dans le domaine du proche IR mais également étendus aux domaines du visible et de l’IR. La première de ces grandeurs est l’émissivité dont le traitement a déjà été abordé par d’autres études. La seconde grandeur d’influence touche plus particulièrement à la localisation des points chauds sur l’objet et la distorsion du champ de température apportée par les effets convectifs présents autour d’un objet à haute température, elle est le coeur de cette thèse. En effet, lorsqu’une pièce chaude se trouve dans un milieu ambiant beaucoup plus froid, il se crée un gradient de température et donc d’indice de réfraction autour de la pièce. Or les caméras travaillant dans les différentes bandes spectrales vont être plus ou moins sensibles à ces variations d’indices de réfraction du fait de la dépendance de l’indice optique avec la longueur d’onde et de la résolution spatiale de la caméra utilisée. Ce phénomène, appelé effet mirage, entraîne inévitablement une déformation des informations spatiales reçues par la caméra. Le but de cette thèse a donc été d’estimer et de proposer une première approche pour corriger l’erreur faite sur la mesure de température et/ou de déformation faites par caméras sur des pièces chaudes. La démarche générale du travail a donc été dans un premier temps de calculer le champ de température autour de l’objet considéré en se ramenant d’abord à des cas simplifiés. On en a déduit alors le champ de réfraction entraînant une « déformation » de l’objet, en faisant le lien entre T et n. Cette étape correspond à l’approche numérique de notre étude. Cette étape numérique a été réalisé à l’aide d’un outil de lancer de rayons développée à l’ICA. L’approche expérimentale a consisté à l’utilisation de méthodes telle que la BOS (Background Oriented Schlieren), la PIV, la srtioscopie afin de déduire le champ de déplacements provoqué par le panache convectif. Ces résultats ont été comparés à la méthode numérique et ceci pour différentes longueurs d’ondes. Enfin, une stratégie de correction d’images perturbées a été abordé à l’aide de méthodes telles que la transformée d’Abel inverse afin de remonter au champ d’indice de réfraction 2D axisymétrique à partir d’une déformation plane.

The unifying theme of all three chapters of this dissertation is incomplete information games. Each chapter investigates two essential components, namely beliefs and knowledge, of incomplete information games. In particular, the first two chapter studies an alternative equilibrium notion of Sakovics (2001)- mirage equilibrium- and the final chapter introduces a new notion of metric to measure the distance between partitions. All relevant notations and definitions are defined for each chapter so that any of them can be read independently. In the first chapter, I restudy the Purification theorem of Harsanyi (1973) by relaxing the common knowledge assumption on priors for 2 x 2 games. I show that the limit of the (Mirage) equilibrium points in perturbed games generically converge to a pure strategy of the original complete information. This result, unlike the original one in which the limit is a mixed equilibrium point, is reminiscent of risk dominance criterion of Carlsson and van Damme (1993). I also study the conditions for different hierarchy levels that yields risk dominant outcome for coordination games. That is, I give conditions (first order stochastic dominance and monotone likelihood ratio order) that yield the risk dominant outcome of a coordination game as the limit of perturbed game ´a la Harsanyi (1973). In the second chapter, I attempt to provide a generalization of mirage equilibrium for dynamic games in the context of Cournot duopoly in which costs are private information. The task of extending the definition of mirage equilibrium is a nontrivial issue since it is not clear on which level of finite hierarchies of beliefs the update takes place. I take a short-cut to tackle this problem and instead of working on beliefs (probability distributions) directly, I work on the support of them. Broadly speaking, players update their beliefs by eliminating the support of ”types” that do not explain the opponents’ behavior. I show that the limit of this update process converges to a Nash equilibrium of the corresponding complete information game. I also show that the rate of convergence is linear. In the third chapter, I define a new metric to measure the distance between the partitions of a given finite set. I compare the proposed metric with the ones in the literature through examples.

Architecture and arts practices were arguably kept apart during the first half of the 20th century, resisting an emerging overlap that was conducted by both artists and architects. Installation art has subsequently emerged as an art practice but has shared many qualities with architecture because of its creation of spatial territory. Thus, in contemporary art, installation art has been moving in the fluxes between art and architecture. In the case of installation art, a temporary space is created along with a new kind of engagement and perception of the places around us. It motivates the spectator’s imagination when they are inside, experiencing a shelter that is new to the context. At the same time, it motivates memories of that experience after the installation space is removed. Mediating architecture with a spatial medium like an installation invites a new reading of the space to be applied. This reading opposes the interpretation of architecture as still signs, objects or still images, mainly because of the continuous unfolding of the art installation and the close involvement of the viewer in the spectating journey. Consequently, mediating the exhibition space through an installation creates narratives that are subjective and context-specific, while their transition through other mediums continues to alter the original narrative after the work is dismantled. Driven from the proposition that the event of a temporary installation can be articulated by the ‘event’; a concept that French philosopher Gilles Delleuze addresses in his study: The Fold, which considers the accumulated influence of a number of perceptions of space, the thesis discusses the alternative scenarios of reading the temporary architectural space while focusing on the narrative of these architectural happenings by referring mainly to Mieke Bal’s ‘narratology’ as an approach to this new understanding. Before experiencing examples of installation art, a methodological technique; collage- de-collage-re-collage, is presented as a tool to negotiate the narratives collected from the case studies. It is formulated after a theoretical structure is set to investigate the case studies where a need to develop tools of analysis and representation becomes obvious to the work. The study then tests the proposed theoretical framework on three examples, each of which represents a level of temporality in space. As they unfold, the study tracks the encounters that may be further used as instruments to extend the understanding of installation art in particular and temporary spaces in general.

This research examines the operational and financial shortcomings of South African State-Owned Companies (‘SOCs') which is shown to primarily stem from a lack of enforceable accountability. The resolution of this accountability issue begins with the identification of SOCs. An analysis is undertaken of the predominant statutes with which SOCs are required to comply: the Public Finance Management Act and the Companies Act. An examination of these statutes, together with relevant case law and secondary sources, reveals contradictory, convoluted and confusing provisions relating to the definition and categorization of various State-Owned Enterprises (‘SOEs') and SOCs. A complete overhaul of these statutory definitions and categorisations is required through the enactment of an overarching legislation to govern all aspects relating to all SOEs, under which SOCs will be subsumed, as was previously proposed by the Presidential Review Committee on State-Owned Entities in 2012. The various accountability mechanisms, which should currently be implemented by SOCs, are analysed in terms of primary and secondary sources of law. This analysis divides the mechanisms into two distinct categories: internal and external mechanisms. Internal accountability mechanisms include: the directors, the board and its committees, the role of the company secretary and internal audit and the state, as the sole shareholder of the SOC. The external accountability mechanisms include: the external audit, the role of the Auditor-General and Public Protector, the legislature, the judiciary and the public, as the ultimate stakeholder of the SOC. Notwithstanding the availability of these accountability mechanisms, SOCs still fail to actually account for their continued underperformance. Research conducted through a direct analysis and interpretation of the annual, integrated reports of South African Airways SOC Limited (‘SAA'), from 2012 to 2017, will illustrate the inability of an SOC to effectively account for its performance. It is shown that one of the significant challenges which contributes to the accountability issue facing an SOC stems from the fact that the state is its sole shareholder. Evidence from this case study, together with that garnered from the investigation of the Zondo Commission of Inquiry into State Capture, will conclusively unveil the significant accountability issues experienced by many SOCs in South Africa. There is limited case law on the corporate governance and accountability of SOCs, however, an examination of secondary sources of law illustrates the growing trend for the board of an SOC to implement 3 corporate governance structures to achieve accountability. However, it is submitted that corporate governance, whilst popular, may not be the best method for achieving the accountability of SOCs. A structured framework entailing the enforceable accountability of SOCs is proposed as a solution to the accountability issue through the implementation of a reward-based system which incentivizes the board of an SOC, and the state, to achieve real and significant accountability. This system requires the establishment of an independent rating agency which will rate the accountability of an SOC. The rating of the SOC will be linked to the provision of state funding, with maximum thresholds based on specific rating levels. The board of an SOC will retain the discretion of deciding which mechanism is to be instigated to attain actual accountability, of which corporate governance is just one method. The board of an SOC, and the state, will be incentivized to achieve a high rating level in order to secure preferential state funding. This reward-based enforcement mechanism for the accountability of SOCs will require legislative reform through the enactment of overarching SOE legislation to govern all aspects relating to SOEs. In addition, legislation will be enacted to establish an independent rating agency, akin to the state institutions established under chapter nine of the Constitution. The implementation of an effective enforcement mechanism will result in the achievement of actual and significant accountability for SOCs which will ultimately improve their performance and reduce their reliance on the state's scarce resources.

Les méthodes photo thermiques sont basées sur la conversion de l'énergie lumineuse en énergie thermique. Quand la lumière incidente est modulée, l'analyse de la propagation de l'onde thermique dans le milieu étudié et dans les milieux adjacents apporte des informations sur les caractéristiques thermiques de l'échantillon. Dans ce travail, la technique utilisée pour analyser les champs de température estla de flexion photo thermique d'un faisceau laser sonde. Cette technique est appelée effet mirage. Elle présente l'avantage, par rapport aux méthodes conventionnelles, de pouvoir s'appliquer à des échantillons disponibles en petite quantité. Nous avons montré que cette méthode pouvait contribuer efficacement à étudier le transport de la chaleur dans des milieux anisotropes. C'est ainsi que nous avons déterminé le tenseur de conductivité thermique d'un monocristal de polydiacétylène. Certains diacétylènes polymérisent à l'état solide et permettent donc d'obtenir des monocristaux de polymère parfaitement ordonnes. L'approche sécuritaire de l'immigration est fondée sur la réponse que les Etats récepteurs donnent aux dilemmes présentés par celle-ci. De plus le contrôle extérieur (majoritairement aux frontières) n'est pas si influent qu'on le prétend, dans un milieu où les méthodes de contrôle coexistent avec les méthodes d'entrée illégale en relation symbiotique. Par ailleurs, la gestion de l'immigration par le prisme de la sécurité est fondée sur la croyance qu'un lien existe entre immigration et criminalité. La criminalisation de l'immigration constitue l'une des actions principales qui transforme les frontières externes en internes. Ce sont celles-ci qui séparent vraiment ceux à l'extérieur de ceux à l'intérieur, et qui marquent les limites des sociétés réceptrices d'immigration comme "clubs d'appartenance restreinte". Néanmoins, certains immigrants ne répondent pas aux théories classiques d'explication de l'immigration, et ne réagissent pas non plus à la gestion de l'immigration dans l'actualité (dans cette thèse nous considérons les immigrants illégaux, les femmes immigrantes travaillant dans la prostitution et les mineurs immigrants non accompagnés). Ces immigrants défient les logiques de l'Etat nation ainsi que les concepts impliqués dans sa défénition : nationalité, citoyenneté, frontières, droits politiques et sociaux, société. . . De plus, ils se rebellent contre la tendance à les considérer comme "victimes". En prenant l'Espagne comme cas d'étude, cette thèse examine qui contrôle, comment et pourquoi, qui entre, comment et pourquoi et comment les dynamiques aux frontières (externes et internes) dessinent la "sécurisation" de l'immigration.

Dito isto, argumenta-se como o autor cira uma narrativa incorporando elementos históricos e imaginários em uma ora de ficção que apresenta traços remanescentes do romantismo, mas que também apresenta inovações em aspectos com da representação da natureza e na construção dos personagens.
This dissertation searchs to carry through an analisys of the romance Os retirantes of Jose do Patrocinio having as main criterion the relation between culture and literature in a context of transition of the reality idea. The workmanship was published in 1879 in serial form in the periodical gazeta the noticias and had as inspiration a journalistic covering carried thought by Patrocinio of dries that it reached the province of the Ceara in the year of 1878. Said this, it is argued as the author creates incorporating historical and imaginary elements in a fiction workmanship that presents traces of the romantismo, but that also it presents innovations in aspects as of the represantation of the nature and in the construction of the personages.

Le but de cette thèse est d'analyser la diffusion de la sculpture régionaliste de 1900 à 1950, dans le Sud-Ouest de la France, c'est-à-dire dans les départements des Landes et des Pyrénées Atlantiques. Cet art se développe d'abord sur les monument aux morts, puis il est utilisé à titre décoratif par les architectes qui créent les styles néo-basque et néo-landais. Contrairement à l'architecture régionaliste, la sculpture rencontre un écueil : il n'existe pas vraiment de sources vernaculaires qui puissent légitimer sa création. Cependant, elle s'impose bel et bien jusque dans les productions d'atelier des artistes. A partir de l'étude du contexte culturel dans lequel elle s'élabore et de l'observation minutieuse des grands thèmes iconographiques traités par les sculptures, cette thèse tente de démontrer que la sculpture régionaliste s'inscrit dans le vaste mouvement de quête et de reconnaissances identitaires qui balaie le monde occidental dans la première moitié du vingtième siècle.

Cette these etudie la sensibilite d'une technique photothermique, l'effet mirage, a la conformation et l'evolution d'un film adsorbe puis condense a la surface d'un echantillon solide. Un modele theorique de l'effet mirage en presence d'adsorption est etabli, puis ses limites de validite sont testees experimentalement. La methode experimentale employee est purement optique, donc sans contact et autorise l'etude de surfaces non preparees au voisinage de la temperature ambiante pour des pressions variant de quelques torrs jusqu'a la sursaturation. Dans les conditions experimentales utilisees, la methode se revele tres peu sensible a la formation de la premiere monocouche et, au contraire, tres sensible a l'etat de surface quand il y a adsorption en multicouches. Par ailleurs, quand il y a sursaturation, la methode permet de reveler l'existence de gouttelettes ou de film selon que le liquide mouille ou non la surface. En presence de gouttelettes, une remarquable influence de leur dynamique est mise en evidence

Este trabalho apresenta o desenvolvimento de novas instrumentações baseadas em efeitos fototérmicos para o estudo de interfaces sólido-líquido e líquido-gás, incluindo no último caso o efeito de surfactantes. O trabalho está dividido em capítulos, cada um enfocando o desenvolvimento e/ou aplicação de uma nova técnica. O Capítulo I apresenta uma introdução aos fenômenos fototérmicos e desecreve a construção de instrumentos clássicos de Lente Térmica (LT) nas configurações de simples e duplo feixe. Interfaces sólido-líquido foram estudadas nos capítulos II-IV usando variações da instrumentação clássica de LT. Um novo sinal fototérmico foi caracterizado, indicando a formação de uma lente térmica invertida na interface. Experimentos de varredura-z na configuração por reflexão foram usados para determinar a mudança no índice de refração da interface próximo ao ângulo crítico, e uma metodologia similar foi utilizada para a medida da difusividade térmica de amostras opacas. Nos capítulos V-VII, a deformação de superfícies líquidas foi estudada pelo efeito Marangoni induzido por laser e pela geração de ondas capilares. A transferência de calor pela interface líquido-gás foi monitorada por Deflexão Fototérmica Transversal. Em todos os casos, a influência de surfactantes foi estudada pela formação de uma monocamada na superfície dos líquidos. Observou-se que uma pequena quantidade de surfactante é capaz de cessar a movimentação de líquidos induzida por gradientes de tensão superficial e aumentar significativamente a transferência de calor pela interface. Os resultados indicam uma correlação entre as transições de fase das monocamadas e a atenuação da deformação superficial bem como o aumento na transferência de calor. Finalmente, o capítulo VIII apresenta uma coleção de trabalhos que derivaram dos estudos relacionados com as instrumentações desenvolvidas.This work presents the development of new instrumentations based on photothermal phenomena to study solid-liquid and liquid-gas interfaces, including in the latter the effect of surfactants. The work is divided into chapters, each one focusing on the development and/or application of a new technique. Chapter I presents an introduction to photothermal phenomena and describes the construction of classical Thermal Lens (TL) instruments in the single and double-beam configurations. Solid-liquid interfaces were studied in chapters II-IV using variations of the classical TL instrumentation. A new photothermal signal was characterized, indicating the formation of an inverted thermal lens at the interface. Z-scan experiments in the reflection configuration were used to determine the change in the refractive index of an interface close to the critical angle, and a similar methodolody was used to measure the thermal diffusivity of opaque samples. In Chapters V-VII, the deformation of liquid surfaces was studied by laser-induced Marangoni effect and the generation of capillary waves. Heat transfer through the liquid-gas interface was monitored by Transverse Photothermal Deflection. In all cases, the influence of surfactants was studied by forming a monolayer on the surface of the liquids. It was observed that a tiny amount of surfactants was able to cease the motion of liquid induced by surface tension gradients and to increase significantly the heat transfer through the interface. The results indicate a correlation between phase transitions of the monolayers and the attenuation of the surface deformation as well as the increase in the heat transfer. Finally, chapter VIII is a collection of other works that derived from the studies related to the instrumentations developed.

La tesi è incentrata su tematiche legate alla Augmented Reality e alla Mixed Reality applicate per la realizzazione di mondi aumentati con l'obiettivo di introdurre miglioramenti al CSCW (Collaborative Supported Cooperative Work).
Si è fatto uso del framework MiRAgE, attualmente disponibile per scopi sperimentali e di ricerca, e delle tecnologie su cui esso si basa, in particolare Vuforia, per la realizzazione di mondi aumentati all'interno dei quali oggetti virtuali e oggetti reali convivono e più utenti sono in grado di sperimentare la stessa esperienza, visualizzando allo stesso modo gli oggetti virtuali presenti sulla scena. In particolare, ci si è concentrati sull'estensione delle funzionalità messe a disposizione da tale framework, in modo da consentire la possibilità di creare sistemi di realtà aumentata basati su un approccio multi-marker, eventualmente anche di vaste dimensioni, nei quali più utenti sono in grado di muoversi liberamente nello spazio fisico disponibile, all'interno del quale vengono preventivamente posizionati dei marker in punti strategici, e di visualizzare, in maniera condivisa tra tutti gli utenti presenti, gli oggetti virtuali disposti sulla scena, a patto di mantenere inquadrato almeno uno dei marker, attraverso l'utilizzo di un dispositivo mobile.
E' stato necessario estendere le funzionalità di Vuforia, componente software che in MiRAgE viene utilizzato come AR toolkit abilitante, per fare in modo di visualizzare gli oggetti virtuali sulla scena considerando un punto di riferimento unico per tutti, in modo tale da farli comparire sempre nella giusta posizione e con le giuste caratteristiche geometriche, a prescindere dal marker inquadrato.
La tesi si sviluppa in due fasi strutturate in quattro capitoli. La prima fase, dedicata all'approfondimento delle tematiche teoriche, è descritta nei primi tre capitoli. Il quarto capitolo, invece, descrive la successiva fase di analisi, progettazione e sviluppo di quanto si intende realizzare.

Despite significant growth in the number of 'good governance' initiatives promising to generate optimum developmental outcomes in resource-rich countries, there is surprisingly little empirical information about their sector and country-specific dynamics. This thesis focusses on how external 'good governance' norms and institutions interact with domestic actors and organisations to shape the institutional landscape of resource-rich countries. This objective is pursued by means of an in-depth case study of Ghana, a Sub-Saharan African nation that has become a middle-sized exporter of crude oil since January 2011. More specifically, it scrutinises two major reform efforts designed to steer the country's oil industry towards a developmental direction: the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI), an international auditing and multi-stakeholder oversight mechanism, and the Public Interest and Accountability Committee, a home-grown citizens' oversight initiative in Ghana. The analytical lens employed in the study is based on comparative political economy and comparative institutional analysis. They are employed to make sense of the dialectic between the promise of corrective 'good governance' measures and the mirage of reform outcomes in the Ghanaian oil sector. The main argument advanced here is that 'good governance' solutions in the oil industry are essentially weak instruments, due to their inability to grapple with deep-seated instrumental politics, perverse institutional environment, and elite capture that continue to undermine reform in Ghana. This point is adduced to highlight the shortcomings of the 'good governance' agenda. The thesis draws from multiple data sources, collected through semi-structured interviews with various stakeholders, public officials, NGOs and community activists, development agencies, and oil companies. These are complemented by archival research, documentary sources, non-participant observation, and workshops.

Mobile genetic elements represent a large portion of the genome in many species. Posing a danger to the integrity of genetic information, silencing and structural machinery has evolved to suppress the mobility of foreign and transposable elements within the genome. Condensin proteins – which regulate chromosome structure to promote chromosome segregation – have been demonstrated to function in repetitive gene regulation and transposon silencing in several species. In model system Caenorhabditis elegans, microarray analysis studies have implicated Condensin II subunit HCP-6 in the silencing of multiple loci, including DNA transposon MIRAGE. To address the hypothesis that HCP-6 has a direct function in transcriptional gene silencing of the MIRAGE transposon, we queried MIRAGE expression and chromatin profiles in wild-type and hcp-6 mutant animals. Our evidence confirms that HCP-6 does indeed function during silencing of MIRAGE. However, we found no significant indication that HCP-6 binds to MIRAGE, nor that HCP-6 mediates MIRAGE enrichment of H3K9me3, the repressive heterochromatin mark observed at regions undergoing transcriptional silencing. We suggest that the silencing of MIRAGE, a newly evolved transposon and the only tested mobile element considerably derepressed upon loss of HCP-6, is managed by HCP-6 indirectly.

Cette thèse brosse un état des lieux politico-médiatique de la société de l'information, des technologies de l'information et de la communication, et de leurs perceptions et représentations. Y sont questionnées : le traitement de l'actualité technologique entre 1961 et 2000 dans les journaux télévisés d'une part, et l'approche politique développée en la matière et sa mise en œuvre dans l'administration française d'autre part. Par la suite, c'est le passage de l'intégration desdits discours aux représentations sociales qu'ils induisent que nous interrogeons. Après avoir traité des discours, représentations et savoir-faire en matière d'information, nous en étudions les savoirs et savoir-être. En effet, on constate que l'omniprésence d'informations, les multiples moyens de communication et l'utilisation des outils informatiques et multimédia, requièrent évidemment une part de savoir-faire technique, mais relève aussi d'un rapport général à l'information, de pratiques et d'usages, et surtout, de distance critique. Indeed, we can notice that the omnipresence of information, the multiple ways of communication, and the use of computer and multimedia tools obviously require technical skills, but it depends also on a general relationship to information, practices and customs, and most importantly, it needs criticism. Six years of observation of various people informing themselves or informing the others, as well as a theoretical research on the needs (to inform / to be informed) and practices regarding information, have reinforced the idea that information and communication come from processes, mechanisms and stakes which are complex and often technical. As a result, specialists must be conversant and control all this. The specific technicality and approach that can be provided, developed and shared represent a real added value and contribute to the conception of a common culture in information practices from which everyone can benefit

L'applicabilite de la technique de l'effet mirage comme outil d'analyse quantitative des echanges de matiere entre un systeme electroactif depose sur une electrode et la solution a ete demontree dans cet ouvrage. L'effet mirage est base sur la propriete d'un faisceau lumineux de devier de sa trajectoire initiale lorsqu'il traverse un milieu dont l'indice de refraction n'est pas homogene. Or, l'indice de refraction depend de la temperature de ce milieu (effet mirage thermique) et de la concentration d'une espece dissoute (effet mirage de concentration). Il est montre que la technique de l'effet mirage de concentration s'applique a l'etude de la dynamique ionique de systemes electrochimiques aussi varies que l'oxydation catalytique de l'hypophosphite sur une electrode de nickel, le comportement d'une electrode sacrificielle carbone-soufre, et le processus d'oxydoreduction des polycarbazoles. La correction du delai de propagation des especes entre l'electrode et le faisceau lumineux a ete realisee grace a l'outil mathematique de convolution temporelle. Il est ainsi possible de comparer quantitativement le courant mesure a l'electrode et le signal mirage mesure a une centaine de micrometres de cette derniere. L'utilisation de cet outil pour l'etude du processus d'oxydoreduction d'un polymere conducteur electronique modele, tel que le polypyrrole, a permis de discriminer les flux anionique et cationique. Enfin, le couplage in situ des techniques de voltamperometrie cyclique, d'effet mirage et de microbalance a quartz a ete realise pour la premiere fois. Il a permis de mesurer simultanement l'evolution des flux d'anions, de cations et de solvant au cours du processus d'oxydoreduction du polypyrrole

Les voyageurs francais ont ete, semble-t-il, eblouis par le mirage de l'orient lorsqu'ils ont parcouru la peninsule iberique du xviiieme au xixeme siecle (1750-1768). Les romantiques, en particulier, vont interpreter le paysage geographique, architectural et humain a la lueur du passe mauresque de l'espagne, participant ainsi a la construction de l'image africaine de la peninsule. Tout est examine a travers le prisme de l'afrique (du nord) ou de l'orient, un orient souvent imagine. Les espagnols, souvent assimiles a des africains ou a des orientaux, vont susciter la curiosite, l'admiration ou encore le mepris de la part des occidentaux. Cette image litteraire a-telle irrite les peninsulaires ? au xviiieme siecle, les viajeros ilustrados n'en font guere etat. Dans leurs ouvrages a caractere scientifique, ils s'efforcent de decrire le paysage et d'analyser la societe avec impartialite. Au xixeme siecle, les ecrivains costumbristas sont plus partages. S'ils souhaitent, au depart, tordre le cou aux idees recues, ils finissent par integrer l'image arabisee de la peninsule jusqu'a l'utiliser comme un moyen d'auto-identification culturelle. Le mythe africain de l'espagne, bien que fomente de l'exterieur, aurait ete alimente de l'interieur par les autochtones. Dai primi grandi calcolatori, al Personal Computer, la tecnologia è entrata nelle nostre case dandoci accesso, con la nascita di Internet, ad un mondo di informazioni impossibili da ottenere altrimenti. Poi, dagli anni 2000, con la rivoluzione innescata dagli Smartphone abbiamo ricevuto la possibilità di portare queste informazioni sempre con noi, sempre a portata di mano.
Ora i dispositivi mobili sono molto più potenti e "smart" di quanto non fossero mai stati prima e i micro-computer collegati a sensori nel mondo dell'IoT ci circondano e osservano il mondo dandocene una rappresentazione digitale.
Questo ci porta a pensare che forse si stia davvero avvicinando il tempo di una nuova rivoluzione.
Molti si interrogano su come queste nuove potenzialità possano essere sfruttate a pieno, per alcuni la risposta sta nella realizzazione di un' interfaccia innovativa: la Mixed Reality.
Una cosa certa, però, è che se la Realtà Mista entrerà a far parte della nostra quotidianità, dovrà tener conto del grandissimo numero di utenti che popoleranno il mondo virtuale.
Ma se è vero che saranno molti gli utenti di questa nuova realtà, allora è più che probabile che diverse persone utilizzeranno diversi dispositivi.
In questa tesi si esplora questa prospettiva, prendendo in analisi l'idea degli Augmented Worlds come modello di un possibile scenario di Realtà Mista condivisa ed aggiungendo all'infrastruttura un layer di interoperabilità che abiliti allo sviluppo di applicazioni per diverse piattaforme che condividano lo stesso mondo aumentato.
Questo ha portato alla realizzazione di un'applicazione, basata su un caso di studio reale, che permette agli utenti di visualizzare e leggere cooperativamente la copia digitale di un libro storico.

The purpose of this thesis is to understand why the Arab-Israeli conflict has remained irreconcilable for sixty-one years. While the details and forms of the conflict have changed over time, the central factors dividing Zionists and Arabs in the Middle East have altered little. In this thesis I examine what these factors are and why they have been so effective in frustrating every peace effort. To understand the fundamental factors which keep the dispute alive I have conducted a comparative study of the two major peace initiatives which frame it diplomatically. The first formal peace conference between Israel and her Arab adversaries took place in Lausanne in 1949. The issues of borders, Jerusalem and refugees would not be seriously engaged with again until the last peace effort to date, the Camp David talks of 2000. Through a detailed comparative analysis of both conferences I seek to understand the positions taken by the warring parties towards these issues and the broader motivating factors separating them and preventing them from achieving peace. As the most important third party and supposed ??honest broker?? in both talks, I also closely examine the behaviour and policy of the US at each case. I find that the positions taken towards each issue by Israel, on the one hand, and the Arab party, on the other, were remarkably consistent in 1949 and 2000. Israel was not fully committed to peace in either instance, while the Arabs twice refused to sign what amounted to documents of surrender. These consistent positions starkly contrasted with that of the US, which completely changed its positions in ways which, by 2000, had almost wholly aligned it with Zionist demands. I conclude that future peace will rest on the ability of each party to re-examine its past in order to produce a spirit of reconciliation. For Israel, this will mean honestly revisiting Zionism in order to confront what its triumph meant for the Palestinian inhabitants of the land. The Arabs must also seek a broader understanding of their role in the dispute and demonstrate forcefully to Israelis that they seek peace rather than retribution. Above all, if the US is to retain its role as mediator it must abandon its ??special relationship?? with Israel and return to a more genuinely?? even handed alignment with the broader international consensus on the dispute. As it stands, the US??s more or less unconditional support of Israel has the effect of leading Israelis and Palestinians ever further from peace even as an ever more empty ??peace process?? is rhetorically trumpeted abroad.

Photothermal deflection or 'mirage effect' spectroscopy was applied to the quantitative profiling of the optical absorbers in thin polymer films with depth dependent absorption coefficients. In addition, the mirage effect system instrumentation was designed and constructed. Improvements to the precision and accuracy of the instrumentation were implemented, which allowed for quantitative measurements of optical depth dependent layers to be profiled in samples consisting of thin polymer multilayered films. A theoretical model based on one-dimensional heat conduction was developed and used to analyze the experimental results. Further improvements were made to the model by applying diffraction theory to recover heat flux profiles. This added precision for the analysis was required for use in the inverse problem theory. The results from using this theoretical model were interpreted. The mirage effect technique was applied to the dynamic diffusion of solutions containing ionic species through a perfluorosulphonated ionomer membrane. The recovery of the heat flux profiles (solved using inverse problem theory) enabled the recovery of optical absorption profiles, and therefore, concentration profiles. A diffusion model (also developed in this work), enabled the diffusion coefficients of these species to be determined from the concentration profiles. By these means, the diffusion processes of species into the membrane were examined.
