ln the introduction the author looks at the position of Slovaks in the Czech Lands, whether they form an ethnic minority or whether they are subject to assimilation in the Czech environment. On the strength of data from field research she proves that modem ethnic minorities have lost the attributes which were signs of their ethnic life in the past. Given many changes in whole communities and the economic system, transformation of social structures, the demographic structure as well as migration movements there was the emergence of other minorities - cultural, social, and professional. She stresses that in the latter two new minorities there has been an interplay of minorities with the majority society, which has brought about acceleration integration. The researcher also pays attention to the specificities of Slovaks in Bohemia and arrives at the conclusion that differences were and still are given facts, that a substantial part of Slovaks has not moved to Bohemia from Slovakia, but from other countries such as Romania, Hungary, Yugoslavia, Subcarpathian Ruthenia and France. Just these fellow countrymen gave rise to significant cultural minorities in some Czech and Moravian regions which had a different cultural background than Slovaks coming to Bohemia directly from Slovakia. Moreover, they had their own ideas about the education of their children and their life in the Czech and Moravian environment. In the next part the author pays attention to the activities of Slovak politicians which focused on the creation of a certain status of Slovaks in Bohemia. They were to acquire the character of Slovak ethnic minority, although they were living on the territory of their own country. She explains why this intention was not fulfilled in the past and why it is being implemented at present. She analyzes the issue of ethnic education, centering not only on Slovaks, but also on the education in maternal tongue in the environrnent of the Gerrnan, Polish, Romany and Greek minorities. She brings information about the relevant civic associations of ethnic minorities and their work.

The articles in this journal issue cover a wide range of topics stimulated by the term “minority.” When I was first invited to consider this topic by my Swedish colleagues back in the 1980s and 1990s, I observed and described “multiculturalism” as a way a nation-state could control the definition of a swelling group of newcomers from other countries who came with very un-Scandinavian backgrounds and sensibilities. The work of Owe Ronström, Dan Lundberg, Krister Malm, and others showed that the invention and design of a “minority-music” establishment, with resources and performance structures, might have little to do with what the recent arrivals themselves thought of as their own intimate music (Ronström 1993, Lundberg, Malm & Ronström 2003, Ronström & Lundberg 2021). My impression is that even codified Scandinavian “folk music,” like modern European national languages, began more as a product of the Minority than as a grassroots movement.

This paper explores the development of the German minority community in Postcommunist Poland, focusing specifically upon the Opole Silesia voivodship. I argue that the minority's successful engagement within democratic fora at all spatial scales allowed the minority to voice its concerns and secure funds to develop its community infrastructure. However, as the 1990s progressed, the minority's ability to manipulate a politics of scale declined as the policy objectives of key allies were achieved or reformulated. Furthermore, the changing contours of the minority–majority relationship within Poland have exposed significant cleavages within the minority, bringing into question the continued relevance of the German minority political party for the constituency it claims to represent.

Anyone who observes the way the term 'Sephardi' is used will rapidly become aware that there is a fundamental contrast between its use to describe a group of second-class citizens in modern Israel, and its use to describe the creators of a 'Golden Age' in Spanish in the tenth and eleventh centuries. The modern Israeli press can even be found using the term 'Sephardim' to describe Jews from Ethiopia, Yemen and India, the first group of whom have never even lived under Muslim rule, and who have their own very distinctive traditions. In part, this turns on the confusion of terminology that was created by the emergence of two Chief Rabbinates in Israel, with one looking after the Ashkenazim, and the other, the Rishon le-Zion, concerned with Sephardim and the rest.

In 2003, Indonesian government issued a new education law in which one of the articles (Article 12) states that student has the right to access religion class in school in accordance with his or her religion by teachers who share the faith. This particular article has a legal ramification that school --state and private-- by law must provide corresponding Religion Classes (RC) for each religious group of students in order to fulfil their very human basic right to access to and observe their religious and cultural teaching and practices. This paper presents findings of four different school case studies on the problem of access to RC by religious minority in schools in Indonesia. Minority in this paper refers to religious groups that are either numeric minority or subordinate majority at the micro school level, not in the macro national population. This paper argues that numeric minority in any context (micro or macro) is vulnerable to discrimination by the dominating majority when the law of social relations is not fairly implemented. The findings suggest that the right of religious minority groups in three of the four schools to access proper RC is stifled, particularly to access equal learning facilities. Numeric religious minority groups in these schools suffer from powerlessness. One case, however, demonstrates that the positional power of minority group reverses this logic of minority-powerlessness and puts the religious majority students in a subordinate position.

Respecting minority opinions is vital in solving social problems. However, minority opinions are often ignored in general majority rules. To build consensus on pluralistic values and make social choices that consider minority opinions, we propose aggregation methods that give weighting to the minority's positionality on cardinal cumulative voting. Based on quadratic and linear voting, we formulated three weighted aggregation methods that differ in the ratio of votes to cumulative points and the weighting of the minority to all members, and assuming that the distributions of votes follow normal distributions, we calculated the frequency distributions of the aggregation results. We found that minority opinions are more likely to be reflected proportionately to the average of the distribution in two of the above three methods. This implies that Sen and Gotoh's idea of considering the social position of unfortunate people on ordinal ranking in the welfare economics, was illustrated by weighting the minority's positionality on cardinal voting. In addition, it is possible to visualize the number and positionality of the minority from the analysis of the aggregation results. These results will be useful to promote mutual understanding between the majority and minority by interactively visualizing the contents of the proposed aggregation methods in the consensus-building process. With the further development of information technology, the consensus building based on big data will be necessary. We recommend the use of our proposed aggregation methods to make social choices for pluralistic values such as social, environmental, and economic.

We study the dynamics of minority opinion spreading using a proposed simple model, in which the exchange of views between agents is determined by a quantity named confidence scale. To understand what will promote the success of minority, two types of networks, random network and scale-free network are considered in opinion formation. We demonstrate that the heterogeneity of networks is advantageous to the minority and exchanging views between more agents will reduce the opportunity of minority's success. Further, enlarging the degree that agents trust each other, i.e. confidence scale, can increase the probability that opinions of the minority could be accepted by the majority. We also show that the minority in scale-free networks are more sensitive to the change of confidence scale than that in random networks.

The issue of Islamophobia and the treatment of minorities is deeply rooted in the culture of Muslim societies. Throughout history, Islamic constitutional law has focused on the treatment of minority groups. However, the meaning of "minority" has evolved and shifted from referring to non-Muslim minority groups to Muslim minority groups. This research employs a qualitative methodology with an Islamic law and legal sociology approach, relying on empirical data. The article aims to emphasize the need for reassessing "minorities" and setting new standards in combating Islamophobia through a sociological approach by advocating fiqh al-Aqalliyāt as a tool to promote inclusivity among the Muslim majority. The results show that the movement against Islamophobia, based on the study of maqashid al-shariah with an emphasis on fiqh al-aqalliyat, is the main choice for American Muslim minorities.

This article explores the relationship between minority city-level and state-level political representations through the analysis of the contested implementation of state education policies in Tallinn and Riga. Referring to the US debate on this issue, the article asks what role minority incorporation into city-level power structures can play for its substantive representation. The comparison between Tallinn and Riga reveals two potential answers to this question. The case of Riga illustrates how city-level representation can be an alternative representativechannelthrough which the minority can put pressure on state government and magnify its political voice within the country's democratic space. On the contrary, the case of Tallinn illustrates how a municipality can be an alternativelocusof representation, which does not guarantee minority empowerment but rather entraps the minority at the local level within the implicit understanding that the minority (or at least the parties that get the minority vote) can “have its share” locally, but it cannot hope to influence state policies. The comparison between the two cases reveals different levels of legitimacy of the minority's voice in the democratic debate of Estonia and Latvia, and shows the risks and opportunities linked to the two models of minority city-level incorporation.

Kata Kunci: Hukum, Anak, Minoritas, Kekerasan, Diskriminasi Abstract This paper intends to examine and analyze the juridical arrangements regarding the protection of children from minority groups in Indonesia in an effort to protect and prevent violence and discrimination. This research using a normative juridical approach finds that there are legal instruments, both international and national, that regulate the legal protection of children from minority groups in Indonesia. However, there are still some weaknesses in regulatory arrangements, especially in Law no. 35 of 2014 concerning the protection of children who have not consistently used the term "minority group children" in several articles, which of course will have an impact on the application of the law by law enforcement officials, especially the public prosecutor in constructing their indictments. Streszczenie:
Experiences of ethnic minority students in a culturally diverse schoolBeing ethnic minority students in a culturally diverse school is a challenge. This study aims to explore the experiences of students from various ethnic groups as ethnic minority students in a culturally diverse school. These experiences cover both the barriers and the success of those students in adjusting to the culturally diverse school. Five students coming from diverse ethnic groups were recruited as the participants. This study adopted a qualitative design by using a semi-structured interview as the research instrument. The interview data were transcribed and then coded into several themes based on the focus of the research. The results showed that the ethnic minority students might find difficulties adjusting to the school at first. However, they gradually adjusted to the school because of these following factors: teachers’ support, students’ cohesiveness, students’ cooperation, and teachers’ equity. The results of this study imply that the ethnic minority students once experienced some challenges in adjusting to the school environment before they were facilitated with more positive schooling experiences related to student-student relationships and student-teacher relationships.

AbstractBlack men are an integral part of the American pornographic industry, but their participation requires confronting and navigating a variety of simplified categorizations and assumptions that favor their sexuality over their humanity. Utilizing interviews with twelve prominent heterosexual black male figures (also known as “talent”) currently active in the industry, this article seeks to offer insight into the realities that the men face while participating in an industry viewed as taboo by mainstream society. Among the issues explored are their reasons for joining the industry, interracialism and racism, and moral and ethical dilemmas. Also employed are Lewis Gordon's concept of “epistemic closure,” or the cessation of inquiry, and Frantz Fanon's concept of the “phobogenic object,” or “stimulus to anxiety.”

Streszczenie:
The topography of literary production and consumption has been transformed as writers and texts travel, ethnic literature is taught and translated in multiple national venues, and writers’ locations, audiences, and subject matter resist ready alignment. he growing internationalization of ethnic literary production has produced a heterogeneous range of texts, which challenge the established boundaries of ethnic and world literature. Because they focus on minorities, these texts have been slow to win recognition as world literature even though they depict transnational movements and identifications that diverge from those in canonical ethnic narratives. I develop the analytic of minority cosmopolitanism to examine the ways in which these literary narratives of worlding contest contemporary economic and political processes of globalization and Eurocentric accounts of globality. This essay considers how the gendered figure of the diasporic citizen serves as a vehicle for minority cosmopolitanism in Jhumpa Lahiri's Interpreter of Maladies (1999).

Streszczenie:
The body of literature around minority entrepreneurship has been well established over the past few decades. Research however in the context of the hospitality industry on this topic has been lacking. Therefore a goal of this study was to examine the minority entrepreneur experience in the hospitality industry in order to fill this gap in the literature. Specifically, the purpose of the study was to examine black entrepreneurs. Participants discussed their personal definition of entrepreneurship, the challenges they faced while growing the business, and how they believe race impacted their success as a business owner. Responses were analyzed and future directions identified.
