Streszczenie:
The purpose of this dissertation is to answer &lsquo
if we can live together?&rsquo
, through establishing a historical approach towards the concepts of Europeanization, European identity and the rights of minorities. The main argument reads that within the historical understanding of Europeanization, it is theoretically impossible to speak of a common European identity that European peoples and societies could agree upon. The problem is that such impossibility cannot be explained by the mainstream political identity and Europeanization literature. In this thesis, in order to account for the late-modern European self-definition which is distinguished with its banal character that carries elements from post-modernity yet at the same time is situated on the modern necessities and inventions, &lsquo
social identity&rsquo
and &lsquo
social categorization&rsquo
conceptualizations of Henri Tajfel are addressed. The aim is to communicate between the studies of Europeanization and European identity and the Social Identity Theory that proposes an instant gathering of people through social ingrouping without developing a certain sense of common culture, identity or belongingness. Having set the theoretical ground, the practical consequences of European ingrouping are examined by employing a historical perception of the development of the idea of minorities in Europe. Minorities are the traditional others of European nation-states and they are the outgroups of any social ingrouping for that matter. There are observed two fundamental results of the current European ingrouping-outgrouping on the development of minority right regimes in Europe. On the one hand, there is still the traditional security-oriented perception of national minorities in Europe that is simultaneously exposed to Europeanization and some level of improvement
yet, on the other hand, the European ingrouping itself is causing the minoritization of certain groups, excluding them from the very agenda of Europeanization.

Streszczenie:
The Church as the new People of God from its foundation is Catholic and universal. The Church in its mission has greatly appreciated the different cultures and had consistently emphasized the value of national belonging. Different languages and cultures were always a challenge, signs of the times, when the Church carried out its salvific mission. This values were incorporated (although not explicitly) into the legislation of the Church in the light of its catholicity. East-Central Europe is the gathering place of many nations who lived together for centuries. Political systems often created tensions among various nationalities and religions, because in East-Central Europe religion and national identity often overlap. With the dismemberment of Hungary in 1918, the tension in the so-called successor states between the Hungarian minority and the new ruling majority influenced the life of particular churches and Catholic communities. During the Communist regime, the problem of national minorities was for all practical purposes overlooked. The political philosophy based on the "dictatorship of the proletariat" left little place for various cultures, and, under the red flag of Communism, the political ideas of the majority prevailed. After the collapse of the communist regime in 1989, national minorities had the freedom to give voice to their desire for the recognition of their fundamental human rights. The various nationalities in East-Central Europe, including national minorities, are not immigrants. They became minorities because of historical and political situations. With the changes of civil borders they were removed from the body of the mother state. Their home and cultural roots are at hand, but they find themselves in an alien culture. The Church created various means and structures for the pastoral care of immigrants in view of their exceptional situation. However, this cannot be fully applied in the situation of ethnic minorities, because certain factors make their situation different. One of these is the divided particular Churches and hierarchy, which were divided also by civil borders. In the newly created and rearranged particular Churches, the minority was often surrounded by a "hostile" majority and not by a welcoming country as in the case of immigrants. Another factor which characterizes the situation of ethnic minorities is that any attempt to establish ecclesiastical structures based on nationality (personal diocese, personal parish), might be interpreted by the majority as a breeding ground for nationalism, and could even incite their fear of a possible change of civil borders, placing the integrity of the state in jeopardy. Pope John Paul II, in his World Day of Peace Message in 1989, summarized those values, which ecclesiastical legislation has to rely on namely, the right of an ethnic minority to its language, culture and education, as well as the duty of ethnic minorities toward the majority culture. The A. presents some practical possibilities and perspectives in creating a culture of peace and some relatively simple possibilities for ecclesiastical legislation related to ethnic minorities.

Streszczenie:
Currently, the American educational establishment promotes the traditional idea that the causes of truancy rest with truants themselves. The general tendency in educational administration is to regard school as an unchallengeable good such that any child willfully absenting himself from it must be rebellious and/or deficient. While this thinking may describe some truants, certain recent research, including this dissertation suggests to the contrary that most truants are students who snake rational choices as to whether to attend school or to attend certain classes after they have arrived in school. The present dissertation belongs to a relatively new tradition, with two main novel features. First, to the idea of School Truancy there has been added the notion of Class Truancy. The research cohort of which this dissertation is a part, has shown that, in the western state where our research was based, though School Truancy is common, Class Truancy is even more common. Secondly, this new tradition proposes that truancy is most fruitfully explored when it is seen as a rational response to inadequacies in curriculum and pedagogy. The particular focus of this dissertation is the tendency for ethnic minorities in high schools to truant from school and class. My findings show that if our large student sample is at all typical, there is massive truancy in American high schools and a disproportionately large truancy by ethnic minorities. This tendency to higher than average truancy by ethnic minorities is understandable, since there is a fast growing number of immigrants who flow into the United States each year. The largest of these minority groups is Hispanic. Unfortunately, relatively little truancy research has been done with this group or, for that matter, any other minority group. The thesis has sought to uncover the relationship between students belonging to ethnic minorities, including those for whom English is a second language, and their truancy. A survey was administered to 2727 high school students in the western United States, and 962 students in the eastern United States. The survey questions were constructed to gain information regarding the students' demographic profiles, truancy patterns both from school and class over the previous two months, students' attitudes toward school regarding value of education, reading, parents, friends, teachers, and English as a second language. This study found serious truanting taking place in these schools among both Caucasian and ethnic minority students, with higher levels among the ethnic minorities. We also found high truancy levels among those students who speak English as a second language, mainly from those who perceive their English proficiency in understanding, speaking, reading and writing to be weak. The findings suggest that the percentage of high school students who truant is shockingly high. They also suggest that the causes of truancy may lie more in curriculum and pedagogical arrangements than in deficiencies in the truants themselves. This suggested cause would seem to demand that administrators and teacher educators elevate the truancy problem to a much higher priority than it seems to enjoy now. My thesis makes certain recommendations as to how the problem may be better understood so that effective solutions may be found.

Streszczenie:

Currently, a mismatch exists between the race and ethnicity of the U.S. physician workforce and the patients it serves. The federal government, the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), individual medical schools and other organizations are addressing this mismatch in part by focusing on increasing the numbers of racial/ethnic minorities who matriculate into medical schools. However, it is unclear how minority students navigate the medical school admissions process. This study used a grounded theory approach to explore the medical school admissions experiences of a sample of Black/African-American and Hispanic/Latino students. The study developed and proposed elements of an emerging conceptual model for understanding the reasons why participants applied to medical school, as well as the facilitators and barriers they encountered in the admissions process. Participants were purposively selected Black/African-American and Hispanic/Latino medical students who attended 25 U.S. allopathic medical schools nationwide. Phase 1 included 29 telephone interviews with individual participants and four in-person interviews in groups of two students each. Phase 2 consisted of feedback sessions with five of the original participants to verify four emergent themes: 1) reasons for applying, 2) participants' perceptions of navigating the admissions process, 3) the role and sources of information, guidance, and support, and 4) other forces affecting how participants navigated the admissions process. Reasons for applying to medical school included: perceived fit; prior experience or knowledge; encouragement and role models; desire to help others; perceived benefits; and interest in science. In addition to information, guidance, and support, other forces influenced how participants navigated the admissions process. These forces included: information, guidance and support; finances; preparation; extra programs; extracurricular activities; and attitude. Study findings connect to theories of student college choice and academic capital formation. Findings have implications for research and practice related to advising; reviewing admissions practices; outreach and recruitment; extra programs; mentoring; improved provision of information; and data collection.

This research explores the complexities of the relationship between the police and young black people. This includes considerations on how young people specifically, young black minority ethnic groups are shaped by government policies and its agents, the police. Published research supports the notion that Black young people continue to be affected by a lack of services such as education, employment as well as other social inequalities. In addition, the stop and search practices have caused much damage to BME groups and has impacted negatively on the relationship between the police and Black communities. This thesis explores the issue of Black young people within a historical and social policy context, as well as exploring the views of young Black people and the police. There is a significant body of published research about policing in general. There are however not many in depth research studies on a particular police setting about the experiences of white and black youths and how they are affected by policing. This research explores young people's thoughts on exactly this theme. The empirical research was derived from qualitative data from semi-structured interviews with 18 police officers, and 17 young people taken from diverse and economically active areas of London. The findings supports published research of police discriminatory practices to explain the disproportionate treatment of black young people within the criminal justice system. It also highlighted the feelings and the effect of police stop on the individuals being stopped. This study therefore suggests a move away from the notion that black young people are criminals to involving them as contributors to social policy by giving them a true voice in policing and social policy making process.

Streszczenie:
The study examined minority persons’ views and experiences with Child Protective Services (CPS) in the community. This study used a qualitative design with face‑to‑face interviews with 12 participants in the community. This study used the “Post‑Positivist” data analysis, which is qualitative in evaluation and explained each participant’s subjective reality. The study found that most participants were satisfied with the results and were dissatisfied with the process in and of itself. Overall the study found that most participants felt that there was some sort of a disconnect with social workers in reference to cultural competency. Miscommunication between the social workers at agencies and parents could have played a significant role in why participants had these experiences. However, most participants felt that the agency helped with services that ultimately left the participants feeling a sense of awareness about the purpose of the agency. The study suggests that implementing a program that would allow the community to be informed of all the programs that Child Protective Services can provide be critical in aiding and empowering the members of the community and in helping reduce CPS caseloads significantly.

Streszczenie:
Independent financial advisors face challenges with successful marketing strategies as competition from web-based resources, large U.S. financial services, and wealth advisors' corporations increase. The purpose of this exploratory case study was to understand financial advisors' perceptions, experiences, and marketing strategies to improve their companies' sustainability by targeting a broader population base, including minorities, who need assistance with retirement planning strategies. Consumer culture theory was the conceptual framework for this study. Purposeful sampling was the basis for selecting 7 financial advisors from the mid-Atlantic region of the United States for face-to-face interviews. Semistructured interviews with open-ended questions were used to identify financial advisors' marketing strategies to support financial stability. Secondary sources for data collection included documented client testimonials and reviews of company data. Yin's 5-step process of compiling, disassembling, reassembling, interpreting, and drawing conclusions was used; 6 themes emerged from the data: (a) building a referral system, (b) hosting events, (c) implementing community involvement, (d) knowing minorities' behavioral language, (e) providing financial literacy tools, and (f) maintaining effective marketing strategies. Implications for social change include financial advisors' strategies for marketing retirement planning strategies to the U.S. minority subcultures who are not solicited by financial advisors.

Streszczenie:
The thesis is composed by three chapters. The common theme of the three essays is the identification of long run equilibria of games played on regular networks where interactions are at local level. In the first and second chapter I contribute to distinct literatures applying technics and results from the literature on evolutionary game theory with local interactions. The study of economic segregation within towns, and the tendency of ethnic minorities to live in ethnic enclaves are at the center of the first and the second chapter respectively. In the third chapter a refinement of previous results in the theoretical literature on evolutionary game theory with local interactions is given. In the thesis I develop models with different specifications of revision opportunities, error models, and behavior of agents, which require different techniques for the selection of the long run equilibria. The spatial structure is common to the three chapters, in fact agents are deployed on lattices with periodic boundary conditions. In the first chapter the spatial structure is given by a two dimensional lattice, i.e a torus, in the third chapter a one dimensional lattice, i.e. a ring, is used, while in the second chapter I use both the specifications. The network is always fixed and exogenously given, and the concept of continuous neighborhood is used. Neighborhoods are said to be continuous when are based on the individual perception of agents. Each agent is in the middle of his own neighborhood, and then the neighborhoods of different agents may partially overlap but never coincide. This in contrast with the concept of bounded neighborhoods where agents belonging to the same neighborhood share all the neighbors. In this last case neighborhoods form a partition of the set of agents. Following the literature on continuous neighborhood the two main specifications are considered, in fact are used both the Moore and the Von Neumann neighborhoods in the two dimensional lattice. In the one dimensional lattice models different dimensions of the neighborhood are considered. In the first chapter agents move within the network exchanging position each other. In every period two agents are selected and switch position if both will be better off in the new neighborhood. Differently in the second and third chapter agents do not move within the network while instead they revise their strategy based on the strategies of neighbors. The timing of revision opportunities is another fundamental ingredient of the three models. In the first and the second chapter asynchronous revision opportunities are modeled, in fact in the first chapter only one couple per time has the possibility to switch position, while in the second chapter only one agent per turn revises the strategy. In the third chapter the revision opportunities are simultaneous, and all the agents revise their strategy in each period. In the three chapter, as usual in evolutionary game theory, agents have bounded rationality. In fact agents have a myopic behavior, they are unable to make any prevision about the future states, and then revise their strategy only considering the actual state. In the third chapter a further level of irrationality is given by the fact that agents, instead of best replying to the actual situation, as in the first and second chapter, imitate the action of the best performing neighbor. A stochastically stable state is a state that is observed with a positive probability in the long run in presence of a small perturbation. The perturbation is at the individual level, in fact each agent, in every moment, has a small but positive chance to make a decision differently from that prescribed by his behavioral rule. The perturbation in biology is used to model mutations, while in economics the noise is represented by mistakes and experimentations. Through the introduction of a small amount of noise is possible to define a perturbed transition matrix for which is possible to move from any state of the world to any other in a finite number of steps. In the first chapter the behavior of agents is described by a logit choice function, for which costly mistakes are less likely. Each agent has a positive probability to accept or not an exchange, depending on the variation of utility obtained with the exchange. The game can be described by a potential function defined on the set of strategies of agents, for which every change in the utility of agents is reflected in a variation of the potential function. Assuming the logit choice rule and in the presence of asynchronous revision opportunities, in a potential game the stochastically stable states coincide with states having maximum potential. In this setting is sufficient to study the potential function to select the set of long run equilibria. In the second and third chapter a uniform error model is implemented. Each error can occur with the same probability, independently from how costly it is. In the second chapter three versions of the model are developed. In the first version there is not a spatial structure and interactions are at the global level. The identification of stochastically stable states is obtained using the technique developed by Young (1993), based on results by Freidlin and Wentzell (1984). At the basis of this technique there is the construction of rooted trees, made by the least resistance paths from each absorbing set to each other, where an absorbing set is a minimal set from which the unperturbed process can not escape. Between the paths connecting an absorbing set to another one the least resistance path is the one that is more likely to be observed. The summation of the resistance of all the least resistance paths ending in an absorbing set, E, and starting from all the other absorbing sets is the stochastic potential of the absorbing set E. The absorbing sets with minimal stochastic potential are the stochastically stable sets. The application is relatively simple having only two absorbing sets connected by only one path. In the second version of the model agents are deployed on a two dimensional lattice and interact only with a set of neighbors and the result is obtained via simulations. There are many advantages in the use of simulations, but also some limitations. In fact when the probability of a transition out from an absorbing set is very low it is unlikely to observe it during a simulation, and may be difficult to asses which transition is more likely. When the error rate is higher transitions are more likely but the perturbation may affect too much the dynamics. In the third version agents are deployed on one dimensional lattice, as in the third chapter. The radius coradius technique proposed by Ellison (2000) is used to identify the stochastically stable sets. The basic idea is to compute the radius and the coradius of all the absorbing sets and compare them. The radius represents how is difficult to leave the basin of attraction of an absorbing set, while the difficulty to enter into the basin of attraction of an absorbing set is measured by the coradius. The stochastically stable set of the model is contained in the subset of absorbing sets having radius greater then coradius.

Streszczenie:
In summer 2020, after the protests for George Floyd’s killing, the activism movement Black Lives Matter gained international attention spreading from the US to other countries including Italy. The protests questioned the dominant Western gaze and put the accent on the way we represent the world in our Western museums. These events, along with a growing attention on matters such as decolonisation of culture and inclusion, had a significant influence on the analysis of the roles of ethnic minorities inside the art world both as producers (artists, story-tellers, curators) and consumers (visitors). This dissertation aims to understand how, in the context of decoloniality and under the influence of Black Lives Matter activism, ethnic minorities find a place and are represented as producers and consumers in the contemporary art system and specifically in museums. The purpose is to analyse more in detail the Italian context, focusing on three different Italian cultural institutions that at different levels had tried in the last years to find disparate ways to include and represent people coming from minority groups and living in Italy The present dissertation is based on a review of the literature on post-coloniality and decoloniality and on the decolonisation of cultural institutions, on articles about the Black Lives Matter movement and on the analysis of some case studies of museums that put in place experiments aiming at including and representing cultural minorities inside the art system. The results of this thesis demonstrate that while in the US and in UK the dialogue, the studies and the statistics around this theme are quite developed, in Europe and, specifically in Italy, we are still at the beginning, but many cultural institutions, from bigger and public ones such as the Uffizi Gallery to smaller and private ones such as the Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, are trying to face these issues and to include people with foreign origins in their project both as producers and consumers.

Streszczenie:
My key question is whether granting rights to minority cultural groups can undermine the interests of lesbian, gay and bisexual individuals (LGBs) within those groups. Put differently, this thesis is an investigation about whether the interests of LGBs within minorities are damaged by granting rights to minority cultural groups. I argue that LGBs have the following interests; in family life, sexual freedom, basic civil and political rights, participation in cultural and political life, bodily and psychological integrity, employment equality and equal access to welfare. In order to answer to this question, I engage with the contemporary political philosophy of multiculturalism and I approach the research by critically analysing five different accounts, which can be categorised as: multicultural citizenship, liberal feminism, negative universalism, deliberation and dialogue, and joint governance. My contribution to the debate is by making a variety of critical and positive claims. I make critical claims about the approaches taken by some authors by affirming that they may not fully protect LGBs within minorities from heterosexism. I make positive claims by suggesting innovative policy alternatives for tackling heterosexism within minorities. Three of the positive claims stand out. First, in order to tackle heterosexism it is important to eliminate stereotypes about LGBs. Second, it is possible to have a set of criteria in favour of group rights that does not imply the reinforcement and/or the facilitation of heterosexism within minorities. Third, the oppression of LGBs within minorities is not the logical extension of engaging in multicultural policies. These claims lead me to defend a model that combines aspects of associative and deliberative democracy. I defend that this model deals adequately with the potential threats of granting rights to cultural groups because it has a variety of mechanisms to prevent and tackle heterosexism.

Streszczenie:
Cancer incidence is high for aging minority and underserved populations, yet research is limited about patient-provider communications with aging racial and ethnic minority populations. Achieving high-quality cancer care is crucial to reducing health disparities for this population. However, potential shortages in professional health personnel, the cost to treat cancer, a strained health care system, and large aging populations contribute to the problem. The purpose of this qualitative study was to understand the personal experiences of aging minorities during cancer treatment decision making when communicating with their cancer care providers. Purposive sampling methods were used to recruit 10 minority women and men born between 1946 and 1964 who had experienced communicating with providers and making cancer treatment decisions. In-depth semi-structured interviews and thematic analysis of qualitative data was conducted. Important findings were barriers related to miscommunication with providers, the need for more time with the cancer doctor, and mistrust of the medical profession. Participants perceived poor interpersonal communication with providers as causing a lack of understanding regarding their cancer treatment options, which affected their decision making regarding their treatment. Barriers to communication included long wait times at public or teaching health care systems for follow up cancer care services. The findings of this study could be useful to assist health care providers in improving communication with their cancer patients, reducing cancer health disparities, and increasing the quality of cancer care for this population.

Streszczenie:
The counseling profession requires its professionals to be ethically aware, culturally aware, and personally aware. Counselor Education departments strive to create environments that foster multicultural interactions and environments that provide sufficient safety for persons to be self-expressive and self-reflective. Such environments support the personal growth required to be effective counselors and agents of change. The purpose of this research was to measure the climate for sexual minorities in Counselor Education programs. Using the Climate for Sexual Minorities in Counselor Education Programs Survey (CSMCEPS) to collect information from faculty and graduate students, this research attempted to describe the level of acceptance across Counselor Education programs in North America. In addition, this research looked for (a) differences in responses based on geographic regions; (b) differences between the perceptions of sexual minority individuals and heterosexual individuals; and, (c) differences between faculty members? perceptions of the climate and graduate students? perceptions. In general, the results of this study showed that the climate for sexual minorities in counselor education programs was positive. The stance of the counseling profession would dictate that the outcome should have been positive and, as mentioned previously, there is evidence that self-selection biased the sample. Given the professions ethical stance and the bias of the sample, the results should have been overwhelmingly supportive and affirming of sexual minorities and this was not the case. The data indicated that the environment could only be considered mildly accepting, but should not be considered affirming. To answer the research questions around differences in responses based on demographic data there were several ANOVA completed. There were differences found between student and faculty responses and between institutions that are not funded by religious affiliation and those that are. There were no significant differences found between respondents who identified as sexual minorities and those who identified as non-sexual minorities. There were no significant differences based on regional differences nor were there differences based on CACREP accreditation. The lack of differences may be indicative of sample bias.

Streszczenie:
The management of diversity has been the chief dilemma of the Turkish state since the 19th century to the present day. This thesis explains, from a legal perspective, the ongoing dilemmas regarding the management of diversity in Turkey. The Turkish legal system is shown to have persistently failed to accommodate ethno-religious diversity in the country. This failure is attributable to the state’s founding philosophy - Turkish nationalism - and its influence upon legislation and judicial bodies. The concepts of ‘nation’, ‘citizenship’ and ‘minority’, formulated in line with this nationalist perception, are key coordinates of a policy on managing diversity in the Turkish legal system. The ‘civic’ language used in the Constitutions is therefore argued to be misleading if one takes into account the heavily loaded ethno-cultural and religious references in the constitutional preambles, legislation, and particularly the courts’ jurisprudence. In fact, as shown here, the state’s official stance of ‘civic/territorial nationalism’ has been used to justify the promotion of ‘Turkishness’ and the Turkification of ‘others’ in Turkey. Thus, one of the main concerns of this thesis is to examine the scope as well as the ethnic and religious coordinates of the notion of ‘Turk’ which is claimed by the state and judicial bodies to be an ‘umbrella’ identity. Lastly, this thesis argues that the Turkish state and legal system’s nationalist stance has created a legal discourse which has problems with the very justification for minority protection given in international law. Thus, the thesis further hopes to demonstrate that without a thorough reconstruction of the founding philosophy of the state and the legal system, which would also require a de-construction of history, education, legislation, jurisprudence, etc., any solution to dilemmas of managing diversity would be inadequate.

With the coming into force of the Lisbon Treaty, EU law now contains explicit references to minority rights in Article 2 TEU and Article 21 of the Charter of Fundamental Rights. Combined with other EU norms on non-discrimination on the grounds of race or ethnic origin, and policies on culture and education, these references may be regarded as providing the preconditions for an EU regime of minority protection. This thesis investigates whether the EU should take these developments any further, and play more prominent role in protecting minorities in its Member States. This research question is addressed through four case studies on various aspects of minority protection, i.e., (1) the right to political participation, (2) the freedom to manifest religion, (3) the right to mother-tongue education, and (4) the right to autonomy. The case studies, based on examples from EU Member States (namely Latvia, Belgium and the United Kingdom), highlight that the EU could undoubtedly play a greater role in minority protection. However, instead of enacting its own rules on their protection, a more practical way forward could be for the EU to support implementation of the Council of Europe’s Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities by Member States.

This paper extends upon Jennifer Hunt’s research on “Why do women leave science and engineering?”, that contributes to existing literature that overlooks underrepresented minorities level of commitment to STEM fields based on their STEM educational backgrounds and additional contributing factors that relates to women engineer’s leaving their felid to another felid that does not have any relation to their STEM degree. The following independent factors are the respondents’ gender, reasons for leaving the felid of major, how much does their highest degree relate to their current principle/ primary job, parents’ level of education, current citizenship status, level of highest degrees obtained and salary survey data impact on exit rates of STEM identifying URMs. This is done by running multiple linear regression statistical analysis models by creating dummy variables for underrepresented ethnic/ racial minority grouped all together and isolated each URMs’ group dependent variable along with the contributing factors as my independent variables. In order, to figure out which factors are heavily correlated to the exit rates of URMs departing from STEM fields. In addition to learning more about the reasons behind the increasing exit rates of STEM identifying URMs, I will be discussing the shortcomings of using the 2015 National College Graduate Survey as my data and how the survey respondents’ level of exposure to STEM education from their primary school years suggests that the respondent is more likely to stay within a STEM felid that collates with their highest STEM degree than someone who has rarely been exposure to STEM education from youth.

Streszczenie:
This study is aligned with the Institute of Medicine’s (IOM; 2011) recommendation for research to promote understanding of sexual minority health disparities. Specifically, the present study draws from two frameworks describing how stigma may manifest in negative health outcomes. First, Hatzenbueler’s (2009) model suggests mental health outcomes are influenced by group characteristics and stigma related stressors (e.g. prejudice, discrimination) that are mediated by psychological processes (e.g. coping strategies, cognitive processes) as well as group-specific processes (e.g. expectations of rejection, internalized stigma). Second, Frost’s (2011) model describes how stigma manifests as the experience of stigma (stress) as well as how intervening variables (e.g. coping strategies, meaning making) moderate health outcomes of stigma. Extending such work, this study adds to the literature explaining disparities among sexual minorities by examining multiple indicators of sexual stigma simultaneously, as they differently link to health outcomes of stress and self-reported health through psychosocial mechanisms of social support, self-compassion, and self-esteem. Moreover, this study will gauge if centrality of identity and level of “outness” plays a role in sexual minority health. Sample research questions addressed include: 1) Do different types of sexual stigma link with specific health outcomes and impaired psychosocial mechanisms? 2) Which psychosocial mechanisms are more strongly linked to health outcomes among sexual minorities? We collected data from 380 participants that self-identified as lesbian, gay, or bisexual through an online survey. Hierarchical multiple regression analyses examining sexual stigma, psychosocial resource mechanisms and health outcomes uncovered that public (p<.05) and self-stigma (p<.05) related to decreased social support, whereas discrimination (p.05) and self-stigma (p<.01) related to decreased self-compassion, and while discrimination (p<.01) and concealment (p<.05) related to decreased self-esteem. Moreover, discrimination related to both worse self-reported health (p<.05) and stress symptoms (p<.01). When psychosocial mechanisms were added sequentially to the model of health outcomes, results revealed that only decreased social support predicted worse self-reported health (p<.05). However, low levels of self-compassion (p<.001) and self-esteem (p<.001) predicted increased stress symptoms, contributing an additional 34% of explained variance in stress beyond stigma. Thus, findings revealed that differing types of sexual stigma matter for particular mechanisms that ultimately link to health outcomes, underscoring the strength in particular of sexually-based discrimination in health. Moreover, stress symptoms appeared particularly vulnerable with 53% of stress variance explained by sexual stigma, decreased resources, and identity factors such as centrality. This study also provided initial support for considering the resource of self-compassion as a mechanism in sexual minority health, which has not been examined previously in relation to sexual minorities, and which might be a target for intervention to improve health.

Changes in income and representation in managerial occupations is explored separately for women and men among the United States' eight largest race/ethnic minority groups for each decennial census of 1960, 1970, 1980 and 1990 to determine how much change has occurred between 1960 and 1990 in race and ethnic inequality, and in gender inequality within each race/ethnic group. Insights from gender theory are applied to minority group inequality and insights from minority group theory are applied to gender inequality with some degree of success. Economic change is uneven among the groups, with the largest specific change being the movement of women into managerial jobs. A clear pattern also emerged indicating that the higher the average representation of a minority group in managerial jobs, the greater the gap between women and men. The income of all persons with income, however, did not exhibit such a clear pattern across the different groups.

The purpose of this study was to explore the bases of minority student persistence in Science and Engineering (S/E). Statistical and qualitative methods were employed. Undergraduate minority student graduation rates in S/E from 1981 to 1990 were analyzed at 1,492 public and private U.S. colleges and universities and a national field study component, which included surveys and interviews, was conducted. The results indicated that effective persistence strategies for African American, Hispanic and Native American students would involve assisting students to clarify goals, facilitating minority students as role models for each other, developing peer tutoring to maintain continuous study skills enhancement, engaging faculty in social interactions with students, and enhancing financial support. Explaining the sources and reasons for success in minority student persistence in S/E could impact national educational policy and collegiate level practices in order to increase retention.

The dissertation focuses on Protestants in the Soviet Ukraine from the end of the Second World War to the collapse of the USSR. It has two major aims. The first is to elucidate the evolution of Soviet policy toward Protestant denominations, using archival evidence that was not available to previous students of this subject. The second is to reconstruct the internal life of Protestant congregations as marginalized social groups. The dissertation is thus a case study both of religious persecution under state-sponsored atheism and of the efforts of individual believers and their communities to survive without compromising their religious principles. The opportunity to function legally came at a cost to Protestant communities in Ukraine and elsewhere in the USSR. In the 1940s-1980s, Protestant communities lived within a tight encirclement of numerous governmental restrictions designed to contain and, ultimately, reduce all manifestations of religiosity in the republic both quantitatively and qualitatively. The Soviet state specifically focused on interrupting the generational continuity of religious tradition by driving a wedge between believing parents and their children. Aware of these technologies of containment and their purpose, Protestants devised a variety of survival strategies that allowed them, when possible, to circumvent the stifling effects of containment and ensure the preservation and transmission of religious traditions to the next generation. The dissertation investigates how the Soviet government exploited the state institutions and ecclesiastic structures in its effort to transform communities of believers into malleable societies of timid and nominal Christians and how the diverse Protestant communities responded to this challenge. Faced with serious ethical choices--to collaborate with the government or resist its persistent interference in the internal affairs of their communities-- many Ukrainian Evangelicals joined the vocal opposition movement that contributed to an increased international pressure on the Soviet government and subsequent evolution of the Soviet policy from confrontation to co-existence with religion. The dissertation examines both theoretical and practical aspects of the Soviet secularization project and advances a number of arguments that help account for religion's survival in the Soviet Union during the 1940-1980s.

Streszczenie:
In this thesis I address the following puzzle: What explains the presence of the relatively high number of ethnic minority organizations in multinational states, particularly in cases where (a) relations between the titular and minority groups are hostile; (b) the state pursues discriminatory group-level policies vis-Ã -vis its minorities; (c) state capacity to repress is evident; and (d) the regime is governed by a dominant group, or what can be called a "core nation"? More specifically, the variation I seek to understand through this research is why some political organizations claiming to represent a restive ethnic minority group are banned by state authorities and excluded from public life, while others, which claim to represent the same ethnic group, are allowed to operate. Currently, well-established scholarly literature on state-ethnic minority group relations only focuses on part of the puzzle: it takes the point of view that repression is central in managing opposition, and accordingly has focused only on the reasons that states ban certain organizations. The intent of this study, however, is to change this dominant perspective by examining the question from a different angle, asking why states allow minority ethnic organizations to operate. Indeed, not always do repressive regimes that have the capacity to ban organizations representing a restive minority do - repression is relatively infrequent and selective. My contention instead is that if a multi-ethnic state is faced with a potentially hostile ethnic group, it prefers organizational pluralism which allows it to divide and rule the minority, even if repression is a viable option. This theory differs from existing ones by arguing that states choose to encourage organizational pluralism in ethnic minorities and that, if plurality is absent within an ethnic group, a state may even promote it. I test this hypothesis on the case of interwar Poland (1918-1939). I reconstruct the intentions of policy makers using process-tracing analysis and extensive archival research of the Ministry of Interior (Ministerstwo Spraw Wewnętrznych, or MSW), the main organ responsible for formulating minority policies, and its strategies for governing Ukrainian, Belarusian, German, and Jewish political organizations throughout the interwar period.

This study seeks to explore some of the main problems contemporary British Muslims encounter from the perspective of Islamic jurisprudence. In so doing, it mainly aims to shed light on the extent Muslims in Britain face problems and what impact they might have on their religious identity as well as relationship, belonging, and contribution to the wider society. In so doing, the study will strive to examine whether existing fiqh (Isalmic jurisprudence) literature is adequate to guide contemporary fiqh scholars to deal with such issues effectively and how some contemporary answers to such issues are inappropriate. If that is the case, what would be the way forward jurists should take to find appropriate solutions? Hence, this study will use qualitative methodology to investigate such issues and questions and it will lead the study to emphasise the necessity to find answers to such problems and a mechanism to handle them, which this study would seek to suggest as a jurisprudential approach called fiqh al-aqalliyyāt al-Muslimah (Islamic Jurisprudence for Muslim Minorities) based on values, principles, universalities, and higher objectives of Islamic law: maqāsid al-Sharī‘ah (Purposes of Islamic Sharī‘ah) presented by revisiting textual sources of Islamic law as well as lived examples of early generations of Islam. It will also make some suggestions about further studies needed as regards to fiqh for Muslim minorities.

Streszczenie:
The purpose of this program of research was to determine the value of autonomy for ethnic minorities. Self-determination theory (SDT; Deci & Ryan, 2000) has argued that the need for autonomy is universal. Subsequently, it was expected that, across a broad range of ethnicities, autonomous internalization of cultural norms would be associated with well-being. Furthermore, how multicultural individuals integrate their identities was also anticipated to impact on their well-being and their daily functioning. The present thesis is comprised of four studies. Study 1 assessed ethnic minorities' internalization of their host and heritage cultures. The results indicated that autonomous internalization was associated with cultural competence and context specific well-being. Furthermore, coming from an egalitarian heritage culture was associated with greater cultural internalization. Cultural adaptation in both heritage and English-Canadian cultures combined to predict psychological well-being. Finally, the ability to integrate one's heritage and host cultural identities was associated with well-being.
Study 2 and 3 examined the impact of parental autonomy support on heritage culture internalization. Study 2 was comprised of a sample of ethnic minorities living in Canada. Regression analyses revealed that parental autonomy support was related to autonomous internalization of the heritage culture and to higher self- and peer-reported well-being. Study 3 used a sample of Chinese-Malaysian sojourners. The results of study 3 replicated study 2. Sojourners were more likely to have autonomously internalized their heritage culture when they had autonomy supportive parents. Parental autonomy support was also associated with increased well-being.
Study 4 used an event-contingent daily recording strategy to examine the relation of perceived evaluations of a multicultural person's heritage group to the nature and quality of their social interactions. Hierarchical linear modeling analyses revealed that the valence of the evaluation of one's heritage culture impacted on the characteristics of the interaction. Moderator analyses revealed that how a person conceptualized their multicultural identity and their level of public collective self-esteem influenced how reactive they were to how their heritage group was being evaluated. Together, these results demonstrate the significance of autonomy and cultural integration for minorities' well-being.

This Bachelors thesis has been written with the goal to learn how five Namibian newspapers are portraying ethnic minorities. A secondary goal has been to earn knowledge in how Namibian journalists think when writing about ethnic minorities. The analysed newspaper, Informanté, Namibian Sun, New Era, The Namibian and Windhoek Observer, are all written in English and has their head offices in the capital of Namibia, Windhoek. Both editors and reporters have been interviewed from these five newspapers. Two methods have been used in this thesis. Quantitative content analysis of articles found in newspapers during three weeks in November, 2011, a total of 55 articles were found containing the names of minorities. A qualitative method of interviews was then conducted with reporters and editors at the newspapers that were part of the research. The main theories of the thesis are Denis McQuail‟s version of agenda-setting, McQuail‟s theory on communicator-audience relations and Teun A. van Dijk‟s theory about the media‟s role as a reproductive part in the construction of stereotypes. The results show that 12.3 % of the analysed articles are mentioning ethnic minorities. In these, persons from the minorities seldom play an active part. The most featured minority was the Herero. Politics is the dominant subject in articles mentioning ethnic minorities, followed by racism/tribalism and tribal culture. In the interviews with the Namibian journalists, it is evident that there is a great will to emphasize the issues of the ethnic minorities. Most journalists regard their role as important in influencing people and therefore have a responsibility towards their readers.

This study explored the influence of minority stress on the career and life-space developmental trajectory (Super, 1990) with a sample of gay, bisexual, and queer men. Approximately 202 self-identifying sexual minority males were recruited across the United States via the internet. The study tested a model in which dyadic adjustment and career satisfaction mediated the relationship between three specific minority stressors (internalized homophobia, concealment motivation, and stigma sensitivity) and four specific life roles (partner, occupational, homemaker, and parental life roles). A measured variable path analysis (MVPA) was conducted with the following measures: the Internalized Homophobia Scale (Martin & Dean, 1987); Stigma Sensitivity Scale (Mohr & Kendra, 2011); Concealment Motivation Scale (Mohr & Kendra, 2011); Dyadic Adjustment Scale (Sharpley & Rogers, 1984); Career Satisfaction Scale (Greenhaus, Parasuraman, & Wormley, 1990); and the Life Role Salience Scales (Amatea, Cross, Clark, & Bobby, 1986). The data fit the proposed model well. Internalized homophobia and stigma sensitivity significantly contributed to dyadic adjustment, while dyadic adjustment significantly contributed to partner role saliency. Dyadic adjustment partially mediated the relationship between internalized homophobia and partner role saliency, as internalized homophobia directly contributed to ratings of partner role saliency and parental role saliency. Dyadic adjustment fully mediated the relationship between stigma sensitivity and partner role saliency. None of the minority stressors significantly contributed to ratings of career satisfaction, nor did career satisfaction mediate the relationship between minority and the life role saliency measures. Implication for practitioners, recommendations for social justice, as well as limitation and directions for future research were provided.

Thailand and Taiwan have indigenous minority populations which central authorities have sought to assimilate into the national mainstream. In both countries public education has served as an important tool of assimilation. This study examines the political ideology of the moral education curricula as applied to state primary schools serving indigenous populations in three localities in each country. The direct and indirect implementation of moral education was observed and interviews were carried out with teachers, students, parents and community leaders. The results show that as the indigenous minority children become more familiar with the national culture and its value system, they become more aware of ethnic discrimination against them, which in turn leads to a heightened sense of marginality and engenders antipathy toward members of the dominant ethnic group.
