This study describes a new machining strategy to make regularly aligned cutter marks on free-form surface efficiently for increasing the added value of industrial product. While the free-form surface is divided into many small patch segments employing curved surface patch division milling technique which can substitute for the conventional method, thus avoiding the influence of the change in the curvature. And the patch segments will be machined by a spiral tool path respectively, so that regularly aligned cutter marks can be successfully formed on the curved surface patches by controlling cross-feed, feed speed per tooth, number of teeth and the length of the tool path. Comparing the machined surface and the simulation result, the cutter marks agree with it. If the surface is machined only by the ball end milling with a machining center, this method will be a very effective tool for the machinery industry.

Streszczenie:
Many industries rely on heavy-duty machinery such as cranes, pipelines, motors, which are subject to wear and tear. Milling of such parts using conventional machine tools presents many drawbacks and is impossible in some cases. In such situations, mobile machine tools can be used to machine directly on site. However, mobile machines are flexible, and are prone to detrimental vibrations during cutting operations. Vibrational stability in the surfacing process has been extensively studied in conventional milling. However, the focus of this article is an original study on a mobile milling machine used for on-site surfacing operations. An experimental investigation into the vibrational behavior of the machine is carried out and a sensorless method is used to detect the onset of chatter. Machine flexibility is discussed using a tool-point frequency response function and references from the literature. Milling operations are carried out over a range machining parameter to determine an experimental stability limit. Internal sensors for spindle motor consumption and spindle motor encoder are monitored during the machining process. A threshold is established for determining the appearance of chatter using only the machine’s internal sensors.

Streszczenie:
This study aimed to investigate the effect of the clearance angle of the milling tool on wear, cutting forces, machined edge roughness, and delamination during non-contiguous milling of carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) composite panels with a twill weave and 90° fiber orientation. To achieve the objective of the study, it was first necessary to design suitable tools (6 mm diameter sintered carbide shank milling cutters) with a variety of clearance angles (8.4°, 12.4°, and 16.4°) and all the machinery and measuring equipment for the research to be carried out. Furthermore, measurement and evaluation methods for cutting tool wear, cutting forces, machined edge roughness, and delamination were developed. Last but not least, the results obtained during the research were summarized and evaluated. From the experiments conducted in this study, it was found that the tool clearance angle has a significant effect on tool wear, roughness of the machined surface, and delamination of the carbon fiber composite board. The tool with a clearance angle of 8.4° wore faster than the tool with a clearance angle of 16.4°. The same trend was observed for cutting force, machined surface roughness, and delamination. In this context, it was also shown that the cutting force increased as the tool wear increased, which in turn increased surface roughness and delamination. These results are of practical significance, not only in terms of the quality of the machined surface but also in terms of time, cost, and energy savings when machining CFRP composite materials.

Content: Air temperature and humidity are fundamental in the milling operation. There is a complicated correlation between air conditions and leather moisture that is practically impossible to predict in industrial process. Many important characteristics like softness, grain, pebble, yield depend on leather moisture. This patented system is the latest improvement in milling drums technology that keeps the leather cooler and allows a precise and optimal humidity control. Designed for soft, tight-grained leathers, especially from organic tannages and opened to a wide range of new operating conditions impossible with traditional machinery. The original new design makes the milling drum completely independent from the outside environment with many advantages: consistency over seasons, shorter transition time, energy savings. The original design is recognized by international patent, laboratory results on leather will be displayed during the presentation. Streszczenie:
The proliferation of electric machines has drastically increased in recent years and is likely to increase into the future. This interest in the production of advanced, high power density electrical machines that are small in size has heightened the need for flexible manufacturing processes to produce their laminated components during short batch and prototyping production runs. A means of cost effective, accelerated prototyping of these machines will have a substantial impact on their design and optimization, reducing time requirements to produce and test a given design. A review of the current manufacturing methods for prototyping electric machines was conducted. In particular, laser cutting, electric discharge machining, and abrasive waterjet (AWJ) machining were researched as competitive processes. Each of these methods exhibits marked advantages and disadvantages that present the opportunity for a new process to compete. This work investigates the applicability of high throughput profile milling (HTPM) for the prototyping of advanced electric machines, specifically, the process parameter space for milling of electrical steels. The material response will be determined by characterizing its specific cutting energy and utilizing this to develop a model to predict cutting forces during the milling process. Optimal process parameters will be investigated to obtain maximum productivity and minimal burr formation. Finally, the impact of HTPM processing on the magnetic properties of electrical steels will be compared to that of a leading prototyping technology, AWJ machining.

Fowler, Gary. "Abrasive water-jet : controlled depth milling of titanium alloys". Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2003. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/11436/.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
Abrasive waterjet (AWJ) technology is used in a routine manner in manufacturing industry to cut materials that are difficult to cut by other methods. Whilst the technology for through cutting of materials is mature, the process is also being developed for controlled depth milling (CDM) of materials. The aerospace industry have a requirement to remove redundant material from components manufactured from difficult to machine Ti6Al4V and titanium aluminide alloys and thus reduce component weight. The two main processes available to facilitate this are chemical milling and AWJ-CDM. The two processes have the advantage that they impose negligible forces, thus allowing flexible structures to be processed. However, the process of chemical milling is under threat due to the high costs associated with the disposal of the spent acids. Thus, this research seeks to evaluate the A WJ-CDM process as a replacement for chemical milling for Ti6A14V and titanium aluminide alloys. The magnitude and effect of the process characteristics of chemical milling on fatigue life are well established; however, this is not the case for AJW-CDM. The aerospace industry considers the characteristics of surface roughness, grit embedment and surface morphology to be significant parameters in determining the fatigue life of components manufactured using AJW-CDM. Therefore, before AJW-CDM can be considered a viable alternative, the effect of the process variables on the workpiece characteristics have first to be established. The current research has determined the role of a number of process parameters on the material removal rate, roughness and waviness, grit embedment and surface morphology in the AJW-CDM of Ti6AI4V and titanium aluminide. Nozzle traverse speed and jet impingement angle are shown to govern the operative mechanism of material removal and thus the material removal rate. It is also shown that the surface waviness can be reduced as the traverse speed is increased and as the jet impingement angle is decreased, but it should be noted that waviness increases with number of passes of the jet over the workpiece. The surface roughness is not strongly dependent on traverse speed. Surface waviness and roughness are strongly dependent on jet impingement angle; significant reductions are possible by employing low angle milling techniques. Smaller sized grit leads to a reduction in material removal rate but also to a decrease in both waviness and roughness. It has been demonstrated that grit embedment can be minimised either by milling with a high jet traverse speed at low impingement angles or by low speed milling at jet impingement angles up to 45°in the backward direction only. However, even in the best cases, 5% of the area of a milled surface comprised of embedded grit. Surface morphology can either exhibit directional grooving or cratering, depending upon complex interactions of the various processing parameters. The understanding of the role of various process parameters on the workpiece characteristics will allow the process parameters to be optimised for given requirements. Future work needs to examine the fatigue performance of the AJW-CDM structures, and again optimisation of the processing parameters to maximise fatigue life can be performed. Masking has been employed to provide an economic manufacturing solution for the AJW-CDM process for a specific component. Thus, AJW-CDM has been established as a potential replacement process for chemical milling.

Streszczenie:
The research relates to a study on the routing/slotting of CFRP composites of the type used in aerospace applications. Following a literature review, 3 phases of experimental work were undertaken to evaluate the effects of key process variables on the machinability of CFRP. The influence of varying operating parameters, tool material and cutting environment were initially investigated in Phase 1 work. The results showed that use of PCD was critical and highlighted the importance of chilled air in maintaining adequate tool life and acceptable workpiece integrity. Delivery of chilled air through a single-nozzle arrangement generally led to an increase in forces and delamination with the twin-nozzle configuration showing superior workpiece surface roughness. Phase 2 work detailed the effect of workpiece lay-up configuration on cutting forces, temperature and surface integrity following slotting and routing. Plies in the 45 direction generally exhibited the highest level of surface damage following machining. Experiments in Phase 3 showed that relatively small helix angles (± 3) had a negligible effect on tool life, forces and temperature. In addition, cutters with a single relief angle were found to have lower stability in operation compared to tools with a secondary clearance angle, with detrimental effects on surface roughness.

Streszczenie:
AbstractGovernments in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) have made concerted efforts to improve farmers’ adoption of modern technologies in their farm operations to realize a rice Green Revolution, improve food security, and alleviate poverty. However, smallholder farmers’ access to farm mechanization in SSA remains constrained due to supply-side and demand-side challenges. On the supply side, the market for agricultural machinery services is often underdeveloped. On the demand side, the smallholders with inadequate knowledge of improved rice cultivation practices have limited demand for mechanized services despite increasing wage rates. This study analyzes the mechanization process of rice farmers in the Mwea Irrigation Scheme, Kenya. The Mwea Irrigation Scheme is the most advanced rice production area in SSA, with farmers familiar with improved rice cultivation practices, well-functioning input credit markets, and millers adopting modern milling technologies, enabling local rice to compete with imported Asian rice. Analyzing original data collected in 2011, 2016, and 2018, we found that most farmers in Mwea implemented rotavation using tractor services provided by farmers’ cooperatives, while they implemented leveling using draft animals. Non-cooperative members reduced tractor use and adopted draft animals to implement both harrowing and leveling, implying the importance of a well-developed mechanization service market.

Streszczenie:
Abstract Vibration dampening in machining processes is an important part of a machine being precise, low maintenance, and long lasting. Being able to utilize dampening materials in the design of machinery in existing structural tubing could allow designers to isolate vibration sources from critical components more effectively than with current methods. The purpose of this research was to show and analyze the effect of dampening materials undergoing specific machining vibration. An experiment was designed that used hollow columns both with and without dampening material and a CNC Mill to generate different types of vibration. These vibrations are detected using accelerometers at the top and bottom of the structure. By creating a variable matrix testing different viscosity dampening materials, different spindle speed, and different depth of cut, vibration with different frequency and amplitude was tested. By analyzing the characteristics of the vibration transmitted by the structure without a dampening material compared to that same vibration with a dampening material, a conclusion was made as to whether these materials dampen machining vibration.

Streszczenie:
Nickel-based superalloys are specially designed for applications where high strength, creep resistance, and oxidation resistance are critical at high temperatures. Many of their applications are the hot gas sections of turbo-machinery (e.g. jet engines and gas turbines). With greater demands on the performance and efficiency of these types of machines, the firing temperatures are reaching higher levels and nickel-based superalloys are being utilized more because of their excellent mechanical qualities at extreme temperatures. However, the properties that make them attractive for these applications present difficult challenges for the manufacture, particularly machining, of the components that are made from these materials. Considering the extreme environment that these components operate in, part quality, in particular surface quality, is paramount. The damage and stresses introduced to the surfaces of these components during manufacture needs to be well understood and controlled in order to ensure that premature component and machine failures do not occur. With improved process models and on-machine measurement capabilities, the in-process cutting forces and temperatures can be better understood and therefore subsurface damage can be better controlled. Since cutting forces and temperatures are direct contributors to subsurface damage, better control of these aspects would then lead to better control of subsurface damage. This paper discusses the use of on-machine touch probes to measure wear on milling tools and using those measurements to update a mechanistic force model for more accurate prediction of the cutting forces incurred during the milling of nickel-based superalloys.

In the US, over 38,000 people die in road crashes each year, and 2.35 million are injured or disabled, according to the statistics report from the Association for Safe International Road Travel (ASIRT) in 2020. In addition, traffic congestion keeping Americans stuck on the road wastes millions of hours and billions of dollars each year. Using statistical techniques and machine learning algorithms, this research developed accurate predictive models for traffic congestion and road accidents to increase understanding of the complex causes of these challenging issues. The research used US Accidents data consisting of 49 variables describing 4.2 million accident records from February 2016 to December 2020, as well as logistic regression, tree-based techniques such as Decision Tree Classifier and Random Forest Classifier (RF), and Extreme Gradient boosting (XG-boost) to process and train the models. These models will assist people in making smart real-time transportation decisions to improve mobility and reduce accidents.

Environmental wind tunnels are ideal for basic research and applied physical modeling of atmospheric conditions and turbulent wind flow. The Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory's own Environmental Wind Tunnel (EWT)—an open-circuit suction wind tunnel—has been historically used for snowdrift modeling. Recently the EWT has gone through several upgrades, namely the three-axis chassis motors, variable frequency drive, and probe and data acquisition systems. The upgraded wind tunnel was used to simulate various snowstorm conditions to produce a library of images for training machine learning models. Various objects and backgrounds were tested in snowy test conditions and no-snow control conditions, producing a total of 1.4 million training images. This training library can lead to improved machine learning models for image-cleanup and noise-reduction purposes for Army operations in snowy environments.

Streszczenie:
The High-Resolution Digital Elevation Model (HRDEM) was created as part of the National Elevation Data Strategy to provide detailed elevation data across the country. For the Canadian Arctic, the HRDEM was based on the ArcticDEM initiative with additional post-processing by the Canada Centre for Mapping and Earth Observation to create a 2-meter Digital Surface Model (DSM) covering a geographic region of approximately 4.6 million km2. This report provides details on the investigation of the data issues within HRDEM in the North, available open and commercial sources of elevation data that could be used to improve the product, and technologies available to generate high resolution DSM at similar levels of accuracy and resolution than the current HRDEM. In addition, the report summarizes the results of a research into the common, as well as more advanced (e.g., machine learning), methods for improving the product. In summary, the intent of this investigation was to provide supporting information to address the data anomalies in HRDEM and present a path forward.

Streszczenie:
Cash transfer and other social protection programs in developing countries have often been accompanied by measures to foster financial inclusion, such as the adoption and use of bank accounts and electronic means of payments. Argentina's social benefits are paid in bank accounts and accessed through debit cards. With the simultaneous objective of fostering formality among beneficiaries and stores, the use of debit cards for purchases has been incentivized by means of additional subsidies. We studied the low take-up of these extra benefits by means of a field experiment involving 400,000 beneficiaries of Argentinas largest conditional cash-transfer program (with 2.2 million beneficiaries who are the parents of four million children, 40% of the countrys 0-17-year olds). By using their debit card to spend the allowance, rather than withdrawing cash from ATMs, they can receive a rebate of 15% of their expenditures. However, they systematically fail to claim this benefit: only about 25% of beneficiaries receive this transfer. Our experiment provided information about the effectiveness of an information campaign conducted via text messages or through on-screen messages at ATM machines. The campaign increased purchases with debit cards and subsequent rebates significantly but not substantially in the short run. However, beneficiaries who increased their use of debit cards do not exhibit a higher probability of having access to credit through the financial system, nor higher levels of formal employment. The results indicate that cultural factors (a preference for cash), administrative hassle and citizen security issues are relevant issues that limit the potential of financial inclusion through increased use of digital means of payment.

Streszczenie:
Chemical signaling between beneficial or pathogenic bacteria and plants is a central factor in determining the outcome of plant-microbe interactions. Pectobacterium and Dickeya (soft rot Erwinias) are the major cause of soft rot, stem rot, and blackleg formed on potato and ornamentals, currently with no effective control. Our major aim was to establish and study specific bacterial genes/proteins as targets for anti-virulence compounds, by combining drug design tools and bioinformatics with experimental work. The approach allowed us to identify and test compounds (small molecules) that specifically interfere with the activities of these targets, by this impairing bacterial virulence. Two main targets were selected within the frame of the BARD project. The first is the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters and methyl-accepting chemotaxis proteins (MCP) that have been characterized here for the first time in Pectobacteriaceae, and the second is the quorum sensing (QS) machinery of Pectobacterium with its major proteins and in particular, the AHL synthase ExpI that was identified as the preferred target for inhibition. Both systems are strongly associated with bacterial virulence and survival in planta. We found that Pectobacteriaceae, namely Dickeya and Pectobacterium, encode more ABC transporters and MCP in their genomes, compared to other bacteria in the order. For MCP, soft rot Pectobacteriaceae not only contain more than 30 MCP genes per strain, but also have more diverse ligand binding domains than other species in the Enterobacteriales. These findings suggest that both ABC transporters and MCP are important for soft rot Pectobacteriaceae pathogenicity. We now have a selection of mutants in these proteins that may be further explored to understand their direct involvement in virulence. In parallel, we studied the QS central proteins in pectobacteria, the signaling molecule N-acyl-homoserine lactone synthase, ExpI, and the response regulator ExpR, and established their phylogenetic relations within plant pathogenic Gram negative bacteria. Next, these proteins were used for virtual screening of millions of compounds in order to discover new compounds with potential to interfere with the QS machinery. Several natural compounds were tested for their interference with virulence related traits in Pectobacterium and their capability to minimize soft rot infections. Our findings using microcalorimetric binding studies have established for the first time direct interaction between the protein ExpI and two natural ligands, the plant hormone salicylic acid and the volatile compound carvacrol. These results supported a model by which plants interfere with bacterial communication through interkingdom signaling. The collaborative project yielded two research papers and a comprehensive review, which included new computational and bioinformatics data, in Annu. Rev. Phytopathol., the highest ranked journal in phytopathology. Additional two papers are in preparation. In order to transform the fundamental knowledge that have been gained during this collaborative BARD project into agricultural practice, to control soft rot bacteria, we have submitted a continual project.

Streszczenie:
California aims to achieve five million zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs) on the road by 2030 and 250,000 electrical vehicle (EV) charging stations by 2025. To reduce barriers in this process, the research team developed a simulation-based system for EV charging infrastructure design and operations. The increasing power demand due to the growing EV market requires advanced charging infrastructures and operating strategies. This study will deliver two modules in charging station design and operations, including a vehicle charging schedule and an infrastructure planning module for the solar-powered charging station. The objectives are to increase customers’ satisfaction, reduce the power grid burden, and maximize the profitability of charging stations using state-of-the-art global optimization techniques, machine-learning-based solar power prediction, and model predictive control (MPC). The proposed research has broad societal impacts and significant intellectual merits. First, it meets the demand for green transportation by increasing the number of EV users and reducing the transportation sector’s impacts on climate change. Second, an optimal scheduling tool enables fast charging of EVs and thus improves the mobility of passengers. Third, the designed planning tools enable an optimal design of charging stations equipped with a solar panel and battery energy storage system (BESS) to benefit nationwide transportation system development.

Streszczenie:
Decarbonization and energy security in Europe are two faces of the same coin. They are both related to the large dependency of the European Union economy on fossil fuels, which today represent around 70% of the total supply of energy. The bulk of these energy resources are imported, with Russia being the largest supplier, accounting for 40% of natural gas and 27% of oil imports. However, fossil fuels are also the primary root cause of greenhouse gas emissions, and the European Union is committed to reduce those by 55% by 2030 (versus 1990). This report is based on the landmark research from the Joint Research Center of the European Commission, the “Integrated Database of the European Energy Sector”, which for the first time mapped actual energy uses for each country within the European Union, across 17 sectors of activity, with data granularity at the level of each process step (or end-use) of each of these sectors. Our approach here has been to systematically review these process steps (or end-uses) and qualify the extent to which they could be electrified, effectively removing the demand for fossil fuels as a result. We have focused only on those process steps where technology was already widely available and for which we evaluated the switch to be relatively easy (or attractive). In other words, we estimated the impact of rapid electrification of “easy to abate” activities. The conclusion of this evaluation is that the share of electricity demand in the final energy mix could jump from around 20% today to 50%, which would drive a reduction in emissions at end-use of around 1,300 MtCO2 /y, as well as a drop in natural gas and oil supply of around 50%. As a result of such transformation, electricity demand would nearly double, with the bulk of that growth materializing in the building sector. Short-term, the challenge of addressing climate targets while providing for energy security is thus intimately connected to buildings. While such transition would certainly require major infrastructure upgrades, which may prove a roadblock to rapid deployment, we find that the combination of energy efficiency measures (notably digital) and distributed generation penetration (rooftop solar) could significantly tame the issue, and hence help accelerate the move away from fossil fuels, with energy spend savings as high as 80% across some building types; a major driver of change. Beyond this, further potential exists for electrification. Other measures on the demand-side will include deeper renovations of the industrial stock (notably in the automotive, machinery, paper, and petrochemical industries for which our current assessment may be underestimated) and further electrification of mobility (trucks). The transition of the power system away from coal (and ultimately natural gas) will then also play a key role, followed ultimately by feedstocks substitution in industry. Some of these transitions are already on the way and will likely bring further improvements. The key message, however, is that a significant opportunity revolves around buildings to both quickly decarbonize and reduce energy dependencies in Europe. Rapid transformation of the energy system may be more feasible than we think. We notably estimate that, by 2030, an ambitious and focused effort could help displace 15% to 25% of natural gas and oil supply and reduce emissions by around 500 MtCO2 /y (note that these savings would come on top of additional measures regarding energy efficiency and flexibility, which are not the object of this study). For this to happen, approximately 100 million buildings will need renovating, and a similar number of electric vehicles would need to hit the road.
