Streszczenie:
Abstract: James Joyce once claimed that his Ulysses (1922) could serve as a basis for a future rebuilding of Dublin. The irony in this regard is that Dublin did indeed irrevocably change during the period he was writing the book. Besides the natural changes a city undergoes in two decades, the Irish struggle for independence during which large parts of the city center were shelled to rubble contributed to the fact that the Dublin Joyce knew had largely disappeared by 1922. With this in mind, I read Ulysses as a site of memory and investigate the role cultural memory plays in the way Dublin is depicted in the novel. There are three ways in which memory is significant in this context. First, rendering his characters’ stream of consciousnesses as they make their ways through Dublin, Joyce’s psychological realism offers, among other things, a literary representation of individual memory. Second, this literary Dublin is a remembered city, based on the recollections and imagination of both Joyce, who had left it years before writing his novel, and the readers who are required to fill numerous gaps and blanks in the vague and unspecific depiction of the cityscape. Third, the novel serves as a mnemonic device that shapes the collective memory of turn-of-the-century Dublin. Regarding the shape and meaning of this remembered Dublin, I will focus on its representation as a colonial city and the ways the political situation is inscribed in the text.

Streszczenie:
The summer temperature regime of Dublin city shows a marked diurnal variation due to numerous interlinked causes. At night, urban heat island intensities of up to 8°C can be anticipated in calm, clear conditions. With less than 4 okta cloud, and windspeeds below 5m/s. cold islands develop in the city's parks. Katabatic cold flows and large scale inversions develop when regional windspeeds are less than 3m/s. During the day, although the urban heat island phenomenon is generally absent, temperature contrasts of over 6°C can be expected for topographical reasons. Even with limited sunshine, sea-breezes will develop and affect coastal regions, and areas directly in the lee of hills will commonly experience compressional warming. Heating in sheltered valleys or in the city centre will cause high adiabatic lapse rates to develop. Due to the combination of coastal configuration, topography, and building density, the surface layer temperature profile of Dublin city can be said to be complex, unique, multifaceted. but eminently predictable.

Abstract The period sees the transition of the ordinary fighter from feudal levy, yeoman or city burgher militia, to subject in an absolute polity, to today’s concept of the free citizen in a democratic state. In the period, the Swiss Confederacy was the only major polity that was not monarchical, but republican, and at the same time eschewed a standing army in favour of continued reliance on militia throughout. A commonwealth’s military organisation is clearly one of fundamental importance to its own understanding of the nature of rule - its “constitution”. The article traces the transition and relates it to the concept of government under the different theories of the period.

In this thesis the Dublin City Development Plan 2005-2011 has been critically assessed in order to establish how well sustainability aspects have been considered. For this purpose, policy documents of sustainable development at international, national, regional, and local levels have been studied in order to compare their objectives with the objectives set out in the Dublin City Development Plan 2005-2011. It was found that the Dublin City Development Plan 2005-2011 contains serious, highly positive intentions regarding sustainable development. The Dublin City Development Plan 2005-2011 has shown that it understands the importance of sustainability and it is in agreement with the policy objectives set out by the policy documents at international, national, regional, and local level. However, it was concluded that the Dublin City Development Plan 2005-2011 is not delving into the subject deep enough. Specificplans, strategies and targets for how to reach sustainable development are for the most part missing. In conclusion, the thesis has provided recommendations for the next version of the Dublin City Development Plan.

As we find ourselves in the midst of a planetary trend towards urbanisation, we must acknowledge that urban spaces are linked in a network of metabolic consumption and production that impact not only those recognised as ‘urban dwellers’, but are incorporated into a global structure. Ireland is no exception, with development centred around Dublin, a ‘primate city’ with a vastly larger population than others in the region. Dublin’s Inner City areas have in recent decades been marked by a series of large-scale interventions aimed at reconstituting a new vision of Ireland as a global, modern city home to a tech-savvy workforce. Yet as Dublin explores its post-recession identity as a hub for investment in tech and finance, its urban population continues to grow in ways that are seen to disenfranchise existing Inner City communities. This study explores the perceptions of residents of Inner City Dublin engaged in urban planning processes, in the hopes of making manifest the goals and desires driving participation through various channels, both formal and ‘radical’. A case is made for the city as a site of a post-political condition by questioning the role and efficacy of official consultatory channels, as well as in contrasting held imaginaries presented by interviewees and those presented by official planning documents. Attempts by Dublin City Council to market Dublin as a ‘creative’ city, intent on monetising aspects of cultural identity as a global competitor intent on drawing investment and foreign talent is considered representative of post-politics, contrasted by urban residents’ desires to safeguard the existence of vibrant communities within the Inner City who now risk exclusion.

More than half the world’s population now lives in urban areas putting the city on the frontline of the social and environmental challenge and yet, city planning presents many opportunities to move a city towards sustainability. The city development plan (DP) is a powerful vehicle for change. This research seeks to understand the gaps between an ideal catalytic development planning process and current reality, and provide recommendations to support the attainment of a city’s sustainability objectives. The Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development (FSSD) was used to define a generic “Golden Standard” planning process to help the local authority better leverage its internal resources and refine governance systems to achieve long-lasting cultural change from within to accelerate the city’s progression towards sustainability. A case study with the Dublin City Council’s Planning Department in Ireland provided valuable insight and limited practical application of the Golden Standard.

Logue, Pauline Anne. "A critique of selected sources of moral theology in the Irish context from the perspective of one socially-excluded, inner city Dublin community". Thesis, University of Leeds, 2008. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/11287/.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
This thesis is a contribution to the field of social ethics. Employing a process of ethnographic ethics, it provides an analysis of inner city ethics, within the Irish context. Taking the case of the Fatima Mansions social housing estate, inner city Dublin, the thesis examines whether one socially excluded, inner city community has distinctive moral values, codes and practices, which, when systematically documented and analysed, might provide the basis of a critique of selected formal sources of moral theology in the Irish context. The thesis begins with an overview of the context of research, both at the micro level of the Fatima Mansions community and at the macro level of Irish society (chapter one). A geographical, historical, social and religious profile of the Fatima Mansions community is provided in order to locate its distinctive value system and moral practice. An overview of dominant values in wider Irish society follows, which acts as a foundation for a subsequent critique of selected sources of moral theology in the Irish context A detailed justification of the practical, theoretical and ethical dimensions of the multi-method ethnographic research methodology employed in this thesis is outlined (chapter two). An analysis of the primary research data is then presented in the form of an original 'thick description' of inner city ethics, based upon recurring cultural themes (chapter three). This analysis is further illuminated by a dialogue with mujerista and womanist theologies (chapter four). Finally, an in-depth critical examination of two selected sources of moral theology in the Irish context is conducted, from the perspective of the hermeneutic of a Fatima ethics (chapters five and six). The selected sources are publications by the Irish Roman Catholic Episcopal Conference and publications in selected Irish theological journals. The concluding chapter (seven) examines the wider relevance of the research. This thesis identifies a communitarian survival ethics operative in Fatima Mansions, which differs from that of the dominant value system in Irish society. Moreover, the community's values and moral practice are shown to have an inherent logic within the context of social exclusion. The thesis also confirms and critically explores the failure of selected formal sources of moral theology, critiqued in this work, to engage with central values, moral insights and moral experiences of the inner city. The wider relevance of this research, with respect to formal sources of moral theology in the Irish context, inner city ethics and a contextual theology/ spirituality of the Irish inner city (and beyond), is examined in some detail. Finally, the replicability of the research process, as a "cultural themes process model", is outlined.

Streszczenie:
The thesis deals with the relationships between political violence and the built environment of Beirut during the early phases of the Lebanese civil war (1975-1976). It investigates how the daily practices of urban warfare and the urban built fabric impacted on each other, and specifically how the violent targeting of the built fabric relates to contested discourses of power and identity enacted by the urban militias. The study is the result of residential fieldwork in Beirut, where I held in-depth interviews with former militia combatants, media representatives, academics and practitioners in urban studies and architecture, as well as conducting archival search into bibliographical, visual and microfilm sources in Arabic, English and French. Official geopolitical discourses in international diplomacy about the civil war between 1975 and 1976 focused on nation-state territoriality, and overlooked a number of complex specifications of a predominantly urban conflict. This led occasionally to an oversimplification of the war and of Beirut as chaos. Reading the official discourses side by side with unofficial militia accounts, I argue instead that state and non-state narratives coexisted in the urban warfare, and their intermingling produced geographical specifications that were particularly visible in the built environment. Both official and unofficial accounts were permeated of colonial references to the sectarian structure of the Lebanese society. In the thesis, I adopt a discursive and post-colonial approach to these references. Beirut's built fabric became a contested site where the militias enacted different visions of the same territorial discourse: the nation state of Lebanon. This enactment took place through the occupation, division and destruction of portions of the city. Beirut's built environment played a central role in actively shaping and giving materiality to contested ideas of territory, identity, and security. Therefore, the thesis offers a resourceful and critical approach to the study of the impact of conflict on everyday city life.

Abstract: “Exchange Dublin – An Invitation to the City” draws a portrait of a non-profit collective arts centre in Temple Bar, Dublin. Exchange Dublin has a focus on cultural and artistic activities, by providing an open space for art exhibitions and various cultural events, open to all for free. This is a way of trying to democratise the access to art and culture as a quintessential part of people’s lives and educations, for both the public and the artists, which get a unique opportunity of showcasing their work without judgement or discrimination. Exchange Dublin also plays a key role in supporting and promoting the quality of life of the disadvantaged communities in the city. Throughout this paper the organisation will be analysed in detail, as well as my contribution to it during the five-month long internship underwent there. On this topic, the findings of the audience research, carried out through a survey applied to the public of Exchange Dublin, will be presented and conclusions will be drawn about Exchange Dublin’s public profile, as well as their habits, preferences, attitudes and perceptions regarding the space. There will also be an analysis of the crisis the organisation is going through with the threat of closure they have received, with focus on the causes and, most importantly, the solutions to tackle it. On this topic there will be a description in detail of the measures taken and some suggestions will be made to make some changes to improve the space and the organisation’s image, which could salvage the space. Finally, it will also be emphasised the great opportunity Exchange Dublin’s location in the tourist district of the city constitutes and some suggestions will be made on how to take advantage of the organisation’s touristic potential and attract more tourists to the space, mostly through communication.

An applied theory project, this dissertation relies on transaction cost and evolutionary economic theory to examine the micro-foundations of how regions are being touted for their "collective learning systems" and how this is an important aspect of understanding how rapid economic change occurs. Among some of the most influential arguments in this area are those often made by regional planners, industrial geographers, and economic sociologists which perceive of such dynamic regions as constituting a "nexus of un-traded interdependencies." Based on a small sample of twenty indigenous firms ICT firms in each region, the project takes aim at the often unspecified ways firm-specific capability development is argued to result from the interplay between industrial knowledge and issues of spatial clustering. Goal-seeing behavior of firms is seen through the lens of evolutionary notions of search, while transaction cost principles are regarded as fundamental to structuring pool effects, especially in labor supply and local knowledge pool issues linked to agglomerated industrial forms. Three inter-related propositions guide the analysis of the survey work. The first is that an assessment of how knowledge-based assets are developed through territorialized concepts of learning must focus on evolutionary properties of firm search strategies and differentiate between more and less advanced firms since they are likely to draw upon regional assets in different ways. The second is to examine the process of innovation itself in its traded and un-traded aspects by analyzing patterns in R&D decision-making, strategic networking, and contracting behavior. The third is how some seemingly similar development outcomes in each region are based in differentiated processes and modes of social regulation, and stresses the underlying conventions in social, political, and historical motivations of strategy and political economy constraints linking firm and industry developments to their broader institutional systems. This latter is centered on science and technology policy, on one hand, and urban redevelopment and governance of the property markets, on the other, and underscores the international comparative scope of the project.

Streszczenie:
The COVID-19 pandemic and the arrival of generative AI have accelerated a shift towards Continuous Assessment (CA) in higher education. This paper uses data from a broader evaluation of the “Futures” initiative in Dublin City University (DCU) to explore student experiences of different forms of CA. DCU Futures aims to transform the undergraduate experience, in part by a much stronger focus on CA. Survey data from 546 DCU students were used to examine how different models of undergraduate programmes related to student satisfaction with CA. Compared to traditional exams, CA was perceived to be fairer, comprehensive, and less stressful, but a minority viewed it as less accurate. For most forms of CA, increased exposure was associated with higher satisfaction levels. Exceptions were CA formats that required groupwork. The outcomes show the importance of sharing detailed assessment rubrics with students, and of providing ongoing guidance on groupwork.

The Scioto River Pedestrian Bridge is located in Dublin, Ohio. The team involved in the realization of this iconic structure included the City of Dublin Ohio, Paul Endres of Enderstudio, TY Lin, Kokosing Construction, Genesis Structures, Michael Baker, SBP and Redaelli.

This pedestrian and bicycle bridge provides a new connection between the Riverside Crossing Park on the east side with Dublin’s beloved historic district over the Scioto River. This crucial new link brings together two communties and “serves as landmark for the City of Dublin representing connectivity and inclusivity” the words of Dublin’s Deputy City Manager.

232 metres long, 4.3 metres wide, the bridge has a 153-metre-long suspension span in a reverse curve. The bridge is characterized by the needle shape concrete mast, the “S” shape deck and the cable hangers that connect to only one side of the deck. The large diameter main catenary cables are split and connected at the mast top with a neat connection avoiding the need for a traditional large saddle casting that was deemed to have been visually obtrusive.

Redaelli designed, manufactured, supplied and installed the two main catenary cables, the tie down cable, and the hanger cable system including clamps and specifically designed spherical pins and washers to accommodate any rotations between the cable sockets and the anchor plates under live load events.
