Do modelowania asymetrycznego wpływu dobrych i złych informacji na warunkową wariancję w szeregu stóp zwrotu najczęściej wykorzystuje się modele: EGARCH, AGARCH oraz GRJ-GARCH będące uogólnieniami modelu GARCH. W pracy rozważano zasadność stosowania modeli uwzględniających efekt dźwigni w warunkach GPW w Warszawie. Badania oparto na analizie dziennych stóp zwrotu dla indeksów: WIG, WIG 20 oraz MIDWIG. Uzyskane wyniki sugerują, że w przeciwieństwie do rynków rozwiniętych efekt dźwigni na GPW w Warszawie nie występuje (WIG, WIG 20) lub jest bardzo słaby (MIDWIG)

Background: Vascularized periosteal flaps from the distal radius have been previously proposed. The purpose of this study was to investigate the vascularity and osteogenic potential of a vascularized volar distal radial periosteal flap for the treatment of scaphoid nonunion. Methods: In 5 fresh frozen cadavers, a rectangular periosteal flap was elevated from the distal radius with the pedicle just proximal to the watershed line. Latex dye was injected into the radial artery proximally and the vascularity of the flap characterized by microscopic evaluation. Patients with scaphoid nonunion were then treated with open reduction, internal fixation, and distal radius cancellous bone graft. Two groups of patients with midwaist nonunion scaphoid were then evaluated. The first group received the vascularized periosteal flap and the second group received a nonvascularized periosteal flap. A third group of proximal pole nonunions also received the vascularized flap. Results: Cadaveric dissections revealed that all of the injected flaps demonstrated vascularity to the distal edge of the flap. Vascularized flaps formed visible bone on imaging in 55% of cases. None of the nonvascularized flaps formed visible bone. In group 1, 12/12 midwaist nonunions united. In group 2, union was achieved in 6/6 of patients who completed the follow-up. In group 3, 6/7 proximal pole fractures united. Conclusions: Previously proposed vascularized periosteal flaps from the distal radius appear to possess notable osteogenic potential that may be of interest to surgeons treating scaphoid nonunion.

Simulation experiences captivate the imagination of today's entertainment-seeking public. Once located exclusively at a few venues, these simulations are increasingly prevalent in a variety of locales including malls and casinos. While today's public may view these entertainments as novel, these forms of simulation have rich historical antecedents that can be traced to entertainment and technological innovations of the nineteenth century. Focusing on American examples from the time period of 1820 to the present, this paper examines a wide variety of immersive entertainments that attempted to simulate an experience, environment, or event so realistically that viewers accepted the imitation as authentic and realistic. This paper examines cycloramas, panoramas, historic recreations, and a selection of mechanical rides from amusement parks and world's fair midways that provided group experiences. An examination of the social functions of these precursors strengthens our understanding of the significance of contemporary simulation entertainments in the United States.

Texture evolution during indirect extrusion of cylindrical profiles of an AlSiMgMn aluminium alloy was investigated in the present work. The effect of extrusion temperature on texture development, through-thickness texture variations and texture variations along the length of the extruded profiles were investigated. In all cases a combined 〈100〉 and 〈111〉 fibre texture developed. Generally, the 〈111〉 fibre was sharper than the 〈100〉 fibre. The texture evolution was rather similar along the length of the profile, while the variations through the thickness were considerable. In a region midways between the centre and the surface of the profiles, the 〈100〉 fibre was weakened, and in the surface regions the two fibres were significantly rotated. The texture measurements showed a strong dependence on extrusion temperature, in the sense that the higher the temperature, the sharper the 〈100〉 fibre texture. The influence of texture variations on formability were also investigated.

AbstractThis article traces a labor history of colonial photography and the visual production of race in the Philippine Cordilleras, as well as its diasporic performances abroad. It argues that the ethnological visuality of Spanish and American imperialisms in the mountains of Northern Luzon, which produced discourses of race and indigeneity for the purposes of colonial occupation and imperial politics, amounted to various labor relations between Cordillerans in front of the camera, Americans behind and around the camera, and global audiences in European and North American fair midways. What became known variously as the “industrious savage” or the “dog-eating Igorrote” at the turn of the twentieth century crystallized in part out of workers’ assertions to fair wages, good working conditions, and collective dignity. This essay seeks to provide new labor history frameworks through critical readings of photographs, their subjects, and their larger economies of production and circulation.

This study aimed to optimise culture conditions for murine preantral follicles to improve their growth and survival. Preantral follicles (diameter 100–130 µm) were isolated from prepubertal NMRI mice and individually cultured within alginate beads for 12 days. Three conditions were evaluated: (1) follicle re-encapsulation on day 6 of culture-reducing alginate concentration (0.5% to 0.25% w/v), (2) the presence of oestradiol (E2), and (3) increased follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) concentration in the culture medium (from 10 to 100 mIU/mL FSH). Follicle morphology and growth, as well as anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) production, were evaluated. From day 8, re-embedded follicles had a larger average diameter compared to follicles without alginate re-encapsulation (0.5% and 0.25% groups, p < 0.05). Oestradiol (1 µM) had a significantly positive effect on the mean follicular diameter and antrum formation (p < 0.001). Moreover, follicles cultured with 100 mIU/mL FSH showed faster growth (p < 0.05) and significantly higher antrum formation (p < 0.05) compared to the low FSH group. Nevertheless, AMH production was not affected by any of the culture conditions. In conclusion, the growth and survival of mouse preantral follicles during a 12-day period were improved by altering the alginate concentration midways during culture and adding E2 and FSH to the culture medium.

The development of future contracts market can be divided into two stages. The first stage includes the period 1998-1999, when future contracts appeared and strengthen its position at the Warsaw Stock Exchange. The second stage includes the period 2000-2004, when a dynamic development of future contracts occurred. In the first stage quotations of unconditional future contracts futures WIG20, futures USD, futures EURO were started, while in the second stage: futures Tech WIG, futures on shares and futures on MIDWIG. In the analyzed period the contract futures WIG20 was of great importance with the share of 98% in total turnovers on derivatives. The future contracts market is the fastest developing market on the Warsaw Stock Exchange. In 1998, the year of the debut, the value of turnovers of future contracts amounted to 1 % of spot market turnovers. In the next year this relationship amounted to 7%. In the end of 2000 turnovers of future contracts amounted to 17% of spot market turnovers. In the years 2001-2002 the value of turnovers of derivatives amounted to 119% of the value of spot market turnovers. In 2003 the dynamic development of future contracts was continued. Turnovers of future contracts amounted to 158% of spot market turnovers.

The freak played a significant role in late-nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century entertainment, but its significance extended beyond such venues as sideshows and minstrel shows. This dissertation examines the freak as an avatar emblematic of several issues, such as class and race, traditionally focused on in studies of Turn-of-the Century American literature and culture. Disability and freakishness are explored as central to late-nineteenth- and early twentieth- century Americans’ identity. Freakishness is applied to a series of ways in which Americans in this period constructed their identity, including race, gender, and socioeconomic class, showing the dual role that the freak played for many white, able-bodied, upper-class American men. Freaks threatened such men’s sense of their own disability, triggering such complexes as Wounded Southernness or white masculinity. But contrasting themselves with freaks also solidified their visions of themselves as models of American normalcy. Besides freak shows, they encountered freakishness in a variety of arenas, including lynchings, slums, and early horror films. The late nineteenth and early twentieth century’s fascination with freakishness is situated as an outgrowth of that period’s eugenics movement, showing how the entwined concepts of eugenics and normalcy traversed ground that went much further than studies of physical aberration and chronic illness. This extended notion of the freak is discussed by analyzing various literary texts, especially the novels of William Dean Howells and Jack London. The autobiographies of Booker T. Washington and Helen Keller exemplify how double consciousness can serve as a means of enfreakment. Further, all these texts are situated culturally by medicalizing a series of historical events, including specific lynchings, as well as laws that reconfigured urban landscapes. The final chapter focuses on early horror film, arguing that film became the new American sideshow and in the process changed the definition of freak to something far more monstrous. In short, this dissertation demonstrates how the freak show pervaded America at the turn of the twentieth century and turned the country into one large dime museum.

Twenty-five people appear in a Pruitt photograph. Regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, disability, or number of tattoos, the people present themselves as exotic “Other.” By nature, nurture, or costuming, their bodies distinguish themselves as different. Even the men in suits and hats who run the show seem foreign to Columbus, where cultural, class, racial, gender, and religious boundaries were set: you were white or Black, churchgoer or nonchurchgoer, and so on. In 1932, Tod Browning’s Freaks opened in movie theaters. “Can a full-grown woman truly love a midget?” its promotional poster asked. Although the “freak show” waned with the advent of modernity, it remained a mainstay of world’s fairs, carnivals, and midways. Playing on stereotypes, the freak show, with “exotics and ethnics,” drew crowds intrigued by scientific and medical advances of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Nineteenth century photographers, including Mathew Brady, popularized documentation and promotion of freak shows and “ethnological zoos,” such as those at the 1893 Chicago World’s Columbian Exposition. Although it’s unclear why Pruitt photographed Miller’s, he often documented carnivals or county fair sideshows. Images such as Pruitt’s connect with a tradition of the exotic in photography, including the inclusion of freak show images in family photo albums.

Abstract Smaller combustion chambers, as well as pressure gain combustion processes, are desired in terms of reducing the space, weight, lowering engine manufacturing costs, and increasing the efficiency and specific power of gas turbine engines. In this paper, a compact single rotor disk pressure gain combustor engine is introduced with interesting merits compared with existing turbine engine designs. The engine introduced as the Radial Wave Engine (RWE) features purely radial-flow resulting in a compact and light weight design with only two moving parts. The core of the engine is a spinning radial combustor in which constant volume combustion occurs using stationary inlet and exit end walls resembling a valved-combustor. Power output is generated via a radial-outflow turbine forming a purely disk-shape engine. The proposed engine is a hybrid engine concept, midways between piston and turbine engines with improvements to other counterpart designs. This paper discusses the engine background, operating principles, instrumentation, high-speed video recording, and initial testing of a prototype proof-of-concept demonstrator. This study is the first step towards a new pressure gain combustion configuration which has not designed or tested before.

Shape parameters that may control the strength of color induction across contours are examined. The observer views a central shape enclosed by a surround. The surround is modulated sinusoidally in time along a line in color space around midwhite. A joystick is used to null the induced modulation by adjusting the real modulation in the central shape. The amplitude of the nulling modulation is a measure of induction [Krauskopf et al. (1986)]. The central test is modified to independently vary area, boundary length, and parameters that describe its shape. Figures with the same area but varying contour lengths and shapes can be generated by a simple method. The area enclosed by N complete cycles of a sine wave above the mean line is equal to the area below the mean line. If the mean line is bent into a circle, the outline of the sine wave forms a shape with the same area as the circle but a longer boundary. The length and shape of the contour depend on both the amplitude and wavelength of the sine wave (wavelength = circumference of equal area circle/integer).

We have previously presented estimates of the effect of different parts of the surround on the appearance of a central test. This effect was measured by surrounding a central disk with a radially symmetric spatial sinewave that varied along a color line around midwhite. As the phase of the sinewave was changed uniformly in time, so that it appeared to drift towards the center, the appearance of the center changed cyclically in time. The induced modulation was nulled by adding real temporal modulation to the disk. The amplitude of the nulling modulation was measured for spatial frequencies of 0.05-2.0 c/deg at a drift rate of 1 Hz. The function relating the amplitude of nulling modulation to the spatial frequency of the surround was low-pass. If the amplitude of induced contrast were assumed to be a weighted sum of the effect of each pixel of the surround and the effect of each pixel proportional to the contrast amplitude at that pixel, then the spatial weighting function could be estimated by the Fourier transform of the measured nulling function divided by the extent of the surround. We now present tests of the first assumption. The surround consisted of pairs of radial sinewaves of different spatial frequencies. The two sinewaves were set to be inphase at the first surround pixel, and both were drifted at 1 Hz. The amplitude of induced contrast was measured as described above. The assumption of spatial additivity was tested by comparing the functions that relate the nulling amplitude to the spatial frequency of the paired surround sinewaves for each spatial frequency. The above measurements, combined with measurements of induced amplitude as a function of inducing amplitude, will enable us to characterize the spatial properties of color induction.
