Streszczenie:
The ruins at Yanıkhan form the remains of a Late Roman village in the interior of Rough Cilicia some 8 kilometres inland from the village of Limonlu on the road to Canbazlı (see Fig. 1). The site has not been frequently visited by scholars, and the first certain reference to its existence was made by the late Professor Michael Gough after his visit on 2 September 1959. Yanıkhan is now occupied only by the Yürüks who for years have wintered on the southern slopes of Sandal Dağ. The ancient settlement at Yanıkhan consisted of a village covering several acres. The remains are still extensive, and some, especially the North Basilica, are very well preserved, but there has been considerable disturbance in recent years as stone and rubble have been removed in order to create small arable clearings. The visible remains include many domestic buildings constructed both from polygonal masonry without mortar and from mortar and rubble with coursed smallstone facing. There are several underground cisterns and a range of olive presses. The countryside around the settlement has been terraced for agricultural purposes in antiquity, and is, like the settlement itself, densely covered with scrub oak and wild olive trees. The most impressive remains are those of the two basilical churches which are of little artistic pretension, but considerable architectural interest. The inscription which forms the substance of this article was found on the lintel block of the main west entrance of the South Basilica.

Streszczenie:
This study discusses the origin, and liturgical function, of a popular accessory of the Christmas celebrations, that is, the Bethlehem nativity scene. The events of the life of Jesus attracted much attention in the early period of Christianity, as a result of which the Holy Land was visited by flocks of pilgrims. Descriptions of the sentiments aroused by a pilgrimage to Bethlehem may be found in sources as early as the letters of Saint Jerome. Fragments of the Bethlehem manger were kept in the Santa Maria Maggiore Cathedral in Rome, so it is here that one of the first nativity scenes, a sculptural group by Arnolfo di Cambio, can be found (late 13th century). The work of Arnolfo was commissioned by the same Pope Nicholas IV who also sponsored the ornamentation of the Cathedral of San Rufino. One screen of the Giotto Assisi fresco cycle depicts Saint Francis’ Miracle of Greccio, in which the Holy Mass is celebrated over the manger and the Child comes to life. The Bethlehem nativity scene was the subject of numerous paintings and sculptures during the Renaissance and the Baroque era. From the sacrificial procession of the faithful in the liturgy evolved the genre of sacral drama, from which in turn mystery plays were developed, leaving the premises of the church. Nativity scenes incorporating elements of mystery plays, such as the presence of the shepherds, were intended primarily to make the miracle of embodiment a palpable reality for the believers. The presence of the Holy Family, the three Magi and the shepherds made the nativity scene realistic, always with a touch of the day and age. A tabernacle cabinet carried by angels was erected in 1589 over the Chapel of the Nativity in the Santa Maria Maggiore Basilica; commissioned, again, by a Franciscan Pope, Sixtus V. Caravaggio’s Adoration of the Shepherds altar paintings (the Museo Nazionale, Messina, and the San Lorenzo church, Palermo), represented a novel interpretation of the subject. In sculpture, Antonio Begarelli’s terracotta groups (1526-1527, Modena Cathedral), which resemble paintings, preceded baroque art. The nativity scene, as a genre in sculpture, started to flourish again in Hungary in the 17th century, a symbolic representative of which was the medieval Adoration of the Shepherds sculptural group found by Jesuits in the Town Hall of Lőcse (today Levoča, in Slovakia), a work executed by the master Pál Lőcsei (today in the Basilica of Saint James, Levoča). Three Magi altars are to be found in the churches of Saint Michael in both Sopron and Kolozsvár (today Cluj-Napoca, in Romania), which presumably must have had their medieval antecedents. While the Adoration of the Three Magi sculptural group is a work of an immigrant Bavarian sculptor, Georg Schweitzer, in Sopron, it was Franz Anton Maulbertsch who painted a Three Magi altar screen in Kolozsvár (Cluj-Napoca). Maulbertsch also developed the theme of the Three Magi and the Adoration of the Shepherds in two separate fresco scenes in the parish church of Sümeg, deliberately associating with the great tradition leading to the Church of Nativity in Bethlehem, via the Santa Maria Maggiore Basilica in Rome.

Streszczenie:
Abstract ackground and Aims Background and Aims: To present the ideas of Ancient and Byzantine Greek authors about the renal anatomy, physiology and nosology of mammals, birds, insects and fishes. Method Method: We searched for the appropriate passages in the works of Aristotle, Aristophanes Byzantius, Galen, Cladius Aelianus, Alexander Aphrodisiensis, Basilius Caesariensis, Gregorius Nyssensus, Nemesius Emesenus, Hippiatrica Berolinensia, Hippiatrica Parisiana, Hippiatrica Cantabergiensia, Michael Ephesius and Michael Glycas. These texts extended from the 4th cent. BC until the 12th cent. AD. Results Aristotle elaborates on the varied number of kidneys in several animals and on the abundance of perirenal fat. The last tissue is essential for protecting and warming the animal but, in excess, it may be lethal, as in the case of sheep. He then describes the multilubular kidneys of some animals and the supposed lack of a bladder in birds and marine animals, with the exception of the sea turtle. Aristophanes adds the issue of the deer’s ectopic kidneys and their number in canines. Basilius and Gregorius elaborate on the minute details of some animals’ organs, like the kidneys and feathers of flying ants and the moral rationale of all these. Nemesius discusses the possibility of some animals surviving without kidneys. The monumental work “Hippiatrica” deals exclusively with horse health and refers, inter alia, to kidney afflictions. It describes the clinical signs of what it calls “nephritis”, with oedema and predominating neurological symptoms. For treatment it recommends several methods of causing renal hyperaemia, like massaging, ointments, warm rooms, heated irons, but also bloodletting. Michael Ephesius returns on the absence of proper kidneys in birds and their substitution with kidney-like organs called “nephroids”. Glycas “justifies” the lack of bladder and kidneys in birds as useless because they secrete their excess water via the feathers, a long flying time and watery stools. Conclusion The Ancient and Byzantine Greek authors had understood well several topics of the anatomy, physiology and nosology of the veterinary renal system but they also made some very great mistakes. We will present the above conclusions in length.
