Streszczenie:
One of the key problems of designing composite primary aircraft structures is the problem of development of lightweight and reliable joints for such structures. For conventional bolted joints used for connection of laminated composite primary structure elements, the loads are transferred via the contact of metallic and composite parts having considerably different strength and stiffness parameters. As the local strength properties of composites are defined by polymer resins, having several times less strength as compared to the metallic alloys, the maximal load that can be transferred via the joint is limited by the properties of resins. As a consequence, the metallic parts of such joints are loaded to a very low extent, that causes low weight efficiency. In the presented paper, the approach to development of metal–composite joints based on the principle of harmonization is proposed. The harmonization principle is to minimize the disbalance of strength properties of metallic and composite parts in the local zones of contact. This principle can be realized by two ways: either by removing the resin from the zone of contact to increase local stiffness of composite part (“stiff” joint concept) or by creation of metallic part with porous structure to decrease local stiffness of the metallic part (“soft” joint concept). In this paper, the evaluation of both concepts is given, based on numerical and experimental investigations carried out in this work.

Streszczenie:
High-speed electric motors, e.g., axially laminated anisotropic synchronous reluctance motors (ALA-SynRM), use a solid rotor manufactured by joining alternating layers of magnetic and non-magnetic metallic sheets. The strength of the dissimilar metallic joints is critical for the rotor’s ability to withstand the operating conditions of the high-speed electrical machine. In this work, various dissimilar metallic joint configurations that can be used in high-speed ALA-SynRM rotors are studied by analyzing the shear strength, microstructure, hardness, and composition of the joints. Metallic joints of structural steels and Inconel® alloys fabricated by vacuum brazing and hot isostatic pressing (HIP) are studied. Finite element analysis (FEA) was performed to calculate the maximum shear stress of the joints that were subjected to various high speed operating conditions. The shear strength of the test specimens was measured and compared with FEA results. The microstructure and chemical composition of the joints were studied by using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) on SEM. The results show that the hot isostatic pressed S1100MC-IN718 joint achieved the highest ultimate shear strength (233.3 MPa) followed by vacuum brazed S355MC-IN600 joint (230.1 MPa) and HIP S355-IN718 (203.5 MPa), thereby showing that vacuum brazing and HIP can be viable manufacturing methods to fabricate a high-speed ALA-SynRM rotor.

Metallic mating surfaces in machine joints offer an excellent source of energy dissipation, resulting in damped dynamic structural response, for example in machine tools. This paper describes the results of a series of experiments where the energy loss per cycle occurring at preloaded flat metallic interfaces subjected to cyclic tangential forces are measured. The effects of certain pertinent joint variables on the joint damping effectiveness are investigated. The results should be useful to the designers of machine tool structures, where damping occurring in joints is important.

Streszczenie:
The exhaustive use of light advanced polymer composites into the development of the future high-efficiency long-range commercial aircrafts (primary) structures for increasing strength while decreasing weight for lower fuel consumption and less pollution has attracted great attention in the last decade. In this context, solutions for the integration and joining composites into the aircraft structures metallic sub-assemblies or components, while providing the necessary strength to sustain heavily loaded joints, are urgently required. The paper comes to meet an area of interest for many researchers and large integrators and manufacturers, by presenting several type of metallic join geometrical designs, along with metallic joint part integration solutions into a composite structure directly during production. Performances evaluation of the developed metallic join geometrical designs was performed in static regime by means of pull-out compressive tests. The paper focuses on the strength of the hybrid metallic/advanced polymer composites joints. It was concluded that an efficient design of the metallic joint and a proper transition from hybrid to the composite structure can lead to proper integration solutions while assuring safety requirements.

Streszczenie:
The development of heterojunctions with a strong bonding interface between metals and non-metals has attracted much attention owing to their great potential for use in lightweight structures. Laser joining technology, which emerged as a fast and reliable method, has proven its feasibility and unique advantages in joining metal to polymer matrix composites. Herein, an optimized laser joining configuration has been employed to realize high-quality joining of titanium alloy and carbon fiber-reinforced composite. Cross-sectional microstructures of laser-produced joints reveal that micro-bubbles near the interface have been effectively suppressed and eliminated due to the continual clamping pressure applied to the joined area during the joining process. Tensile tests suggest that the joint strength increases with structure density on a titanium alloy surface, and the greatest fracture strength of joints reaches more than 60 MPa even after experiencing a high–low temperature alternating aging test. For higher structure density (>95%), the joints fail by the fracture of parent plastics near the joined area due to the tensile-loading-induced peel stress at the edges of the overlap region. Otherwise, the joints fail by interfacial shear fracture with breakage when the structure density is lower than 91.5%. The obtained high-performance heterojunctions show great potential in the aerospace and automotive fields.

Bamboo in its raw state is difficult to incorporate in complex structures due to its tubular shape. In this research article, a novel approach to connect bamboo was designed and evaluated in order to integrate sustainable material into modern structures. Several bamboo joints for culm connection were designed based on strength and durability under various loading capacity. The conceptual joints were manufactured and subjected to destructive testing on the Universal Testing Machine, Testometric M500-50AT. From the mechanical properties generated, final modifications and refinements were incorporated into the joint design. Self-drilling metal screw joints were found to be the strongest with a maximum resisting force of around 11 kN in compression and 10 kN in tension. Riveted joints were the second strongest joint, while tightening ring joints, the weakest among the three, could only resist a peak load of 747 N in tension. The joints, designed with metal fittings, proved to be more practical for utilization in assembly design.

In the current paper, the geometric and material parameters of metal fibers utilized for strengthening adhesively bonded single lap joints under flexural loading were investigated by using experimental investigations. According to the test results, incorporating metal fibers in the adhesive layer of a bonded joint can have a significant impact on the flexural load bearing of the joint. The distance between the fibers and also the fibers orientation were considered as the key parameters in this research. It was concluded that the load bearing of the joint can be improved by reducing the distance between the fibers and the highest failure loads were obtained for the joints reinforced by fibers in the longitudinal direction.

Streszczenie:
Radiography is an extensively used NDT method, especially in nuclear, aerospace and automotive industries where optimal designs call for greater reliability. The rules corresponding to industrial radiography are defined in a system of radiographic standards. The standards related to the radiographic testing of metallic welded joints had been harmonised in all over the Europe and at the end in 1997, the standard "
EN 1435"
was established and published. Since then, this standard has become the most widely used standard where the radiographic applications are necessary. To eliminate the person based errors during application of the standard, moreover to save time, cost and effort in radiographic exposures, in this study it was aimed to write a computer program which is able to calculate all necessary parameters for a radiographic exposure related to this standard EN 1435. In the programming stage, Visual Basic 6.0 &
#61651
was used. The program consists of many windows, each giving and controlling separate parameters related to the exposure. Besides giving all the needed parameters, the evolved program is able to prepare a report with these parameters. So, both radiography technicians and experts can use it. It is believed that this study constructs a basis for developing other computerised test procedures for any kind of non-destructive testing methods used in industry today.

The shear coupled grain boundary migration of aluminum bicrystals has been investigated at the microscopic level using a double approach combining atomistic simulations of molecular dynamic and in-situ straining experiments in the transmission electron microscope (TEM). With the simulations we have characterized the effect of the introduction of a sessile disconnections dipole in a SIGMA41[001](450) symmetric tilt grain boundary (GB). The minimum energy path as well as the microscopic mechanism of the GB migration has been revealed using the Nudged Elastic Band method. The description of the migration mechanism through disconnection composition / decomposition and propagation has proven fruitful. In particular it shows that the disconnections dipole acts as a favored site for the nucleation of mobile disconnections that carry the GB migration. Despite the fact that only a tiny effect on the yield stress of the GB migration is calculated it appears that the activation energy is significantly lowered by a factor that can be of the order of 0,65 comparing to the value of the ideal GB migration case. Moreover it is also shown that a preexisting disconnection gliding in the GB experience a friction force from the disconnection dipole emphasizing the ambivalent role of this defect concerning the GB dynamic. In-situ TEM straining experiments have been performed using thin foils extracted from two different bicrystals : the SIGMA3[110](111) (known as a twin boundary) and the SIGMA41[001](450). The samples were deformed under tensile stress in the microscope at temperatures ranging from 280°C to 480°C. Globally the SIGMA3[110](111) GB showed a very low mobility, however some macro-steps associated with intergranular dislocations were seen to occasionally move in the GB. Yet an intense activity of several disconnections families has been observed among which the 1/6 < 211 > type family that has been identified using the asymmetry of their TEM contrast under several diffraction vectors (g). These results are compatible with the presence in the GB of a combination of steps of different height and sign. The straining of the SIGMA41[001](450) GB sometimes results in its shear coupled migration with a measured coupling factor close to a predicted value of the disconnection model. In both bicrystals it appears that the GB dynamic and its disconnection distribution are correlated to the interactions with the neighboring defects like sub-grain boundaries and intragranular dislocations. Streszczenie:
Due to the lack of capacity design principles as well as of appropriate structural details, most of the reinforced concrete building designed primarily for gravity loads as typical of pre- 1970s code provisions, are expected and has been demonstrate to suffer sever damage or total collapse under the earthquake excitation. Due to the use of plain round bar and inadequate reinforcing details, critical shear failure in the joint connection region could occur, leading to sever damage when not total collapse of the building. In this research project, a comprehensive experimental programme was carried to investigate the seismic performance of existing beam column joints prior and after retrofit intervention with a recently proposed low-invasive retrofit technique based on a metallic haunch system. The joint performance was evaluated in terms of the principal tensile stresses that caused the joint shear cracks in the joint panel zone. Quasi-static cyclic tests under uni-directional or bidirection loading regime were carried out to record the response of a series of under-designed beam column joints (with either a wide-beam or a deep-beam solution, deformed or plain round bars with end hooks). The experimental results were used to investigate the effect of structural detailing and loading regime on the seismic performance. To retrofit the potential deficiencies in the existing beam-column joints, the feasibility and efficiency of a low invasive retrofit solution based on a diagonal metallic haunch was investigated. The proposed haunch retrofit solution aims to provides an economic, ease of implementation alternative to protect the joint from the brittle shear failure by relocating the beam plastic hinge away form the joint panel zone. To achieve the desired capacity design (hierarchy of strength) and sequence of event, a simplified analytical formulation has been adopted to account for the joint shear strength in terms of principle tensile/compression stresses prior and after the retrofit intervention. A useful visualization tool based on a M-N (moment-axial load) performance domain can be adopted to evaluate the actual performance point and events, by comparing demand vs. capacity. Designed charts are proposed based on displacement compatibility conditions to evaluate the efficiency of the haunch solution. In addition, a complete step-by step design procedure to implement the retrofit strategy and intervention to achieve the desired hierarchy of strength, by using the proposed diagonal metallic haunch solution, is derived and presented. The effectiveness of the proposed haunch solution and reliability of the derived analytical design/assessment procedure, were validated through experimental tests of 2-D and 3-D subassemblies, shown in the first experimental part to have the most vulnerable behaviour in the joint panel zone. Conceptual issues related to the design of the retrofit intervention, when moving from a 2-D to a 3-D behaviour are discussed. The experimental results showed an excellent performance of the proposed intervention, able to protect the panel zone region (by limiting the principle tensile stress demand), while enforcing the formation of a plastic hinge in the beam, far away from the joint interface. As a result, a much more stable inelastic response could be developed, confirming the high potential of such a low-invasive, low-cost retrofit intervention on under-designed frame systems. In conclusion, a simple numerical model, based on a lumped plasticity approach, was developed and validated on the experimental results to capture the full response of the subassembly prior and after the retrofit intervention.

This thesis aims to develop knowledge of non-metallic connections in order to develop and change the Swedish wood architecture as well as wood structures. The main question being "Are metal-free connections suitable for contemporary timber buildings?". In the theory chapter, facts about wood are introduced, followed by literature studies and previous research. Through literature research in the university database and conducting interviews with an architect, a designer and a carpenter, data was collected for the design process and for the calculation of the dimensions for one of the selected glulam connections. The result showed that there is a lack of knowledge in Sweden regarding non-metallic connections, other countries such as Switzerland are more developed in the area and has accepted the idea of this concept. The result also showed that the lack of strength in wooden connections lead to large dimensions of the timber elements, but an aesthetic advantage can be developed. Finally, the results are discussed and analyzed according to the different requirements set on appearance, durability and manufacturability.

In the design of piping systems, there are many options for transitioning between HDPE and metallic piping. One common option is the use of flanged joints. As a result of the visco-elastic nature of HDPE, the use of HDPE-to-metallic flanged joints requires special design considerations. When HDPE-to-metallic flanged joints are used in ASME Class 3 systems, the design is further complicated by the requirements provided in the ASME B&PV Code, Section III for flanged joint analysis. This paper examines the differences between HDPE piping flanged joints and metallic piping flanged joints, including consideration of industry guidance and available industry testing results. The paper provides a proposed methodology for evaluating ASME Class 3 HDPE-to-metallic flanged joints and HDPE-to-HDPE flanged joints, including the determination of required bolt torque values and the determination of the maximum internal pressure that the joint can resist without experiencing leakage.

Streszczenie:
Thermocompression bonding is one of the key ways to form interconnections in many hetegrogeneous devices. The quality of metallic joints formed using thermocompression is predominantly determined by the bonding temperature and pressure. In order to achieve a strong and reliable joint, metallic joints in particular copper, which has an oxidative nature, require a high bonding temperature (> 300 °C). However, thermomechanical-related stresses induced during bonding can compromise the performance of the interconnections in the long term. Thus, one way to manage this is to lower the bonding temperature used in forming the interconnections. In this study, copper-copper bonding is successfully demonstrated at a bonding temperature of 80 °C. In order to better understand the effect of bonding pressure on the joint’s performance, the mechanical properties of the individual bulk copper bumps are evaluated using the nanoindentation system. Studies are conducted on the bulk copper bumps subjected to different bonding pressures. Their corresponding yield strength and hardness results are then determined. It is observed that as the applied bonding pressure increases, the mechanical properties of the bulk copper bump reach a certain threshold value and beyond which, properties start to degrade. The microstructure and grain sizes of the copper bumps are also analyzed using the electron backscatter diffraction.

Streszczenie:
Abstract The stresses of joints combining the bonding force of adhesives with the clamping force of bolts is analyzed using axisymmetrical theory of elasticity and FEM, when an internal pressure is applied to the combination joint in which two pipe flanges are clamped together by bolts and nuts with an initial clamping force after being joined by anaerobic sealant. The anaerobic sealant is applied at the interfaces partially instead of formed gaskets in pipe flange connections. In the numerical calculations, the effect of the bonding area and position and Young’s modulus of sealant (epoxy adhesive) on the contact stress at the interfaces are clarified. In addition, using the interface stress distribution, the strength of the combination joint is predicted. Experiments are performed and the analytical results are consistent with the experimental results concerning the variation in axial bolt force and the strength of combination joints. It is found that the joint strength changes as the bolt pitch circle diameter, the bonding position and the area, the initial clamping force and the adhesive material properties change. Furthermore, it is seen that the sealing performance of such combination joints in which the interfaces are bonded partially is improved over that of pipe flange connection with metallic gaskets.

Streszczenie:
There is no specific guidance available on the use of electrical isolation devices and how to protect against faults. Because of this, the practice of isolation is varied, which at times may lead to a possible loss of pipeline integrity or electrical safety hazards. Electrically isolating devices are common in cathodically protected piping systems. They can be used to electrically isolate the pipeline from terminal facilities and pumping systems, to divide the pipeline into sections for individual CP, or to manage stray current interference. NACE International defines these devices as an Electrical Isolating Joint. This document addresses the conditions when the use of isolating devices is indicated and outlines the conditions when installing an isolating device may either create an adverse condition or require additional measures (such as protective devices) to ensure the proper operation. Installation of electrical isolation (EI) devices may be a requirement for cathodically protected underground pipe. The primary purpose of the isolation is to open an electrical circuit formed by the protected structure and other metallic objects such as terminal facilities, pumping and compressor stations, metering stations, river crossings, etc.
