Streszczenie:
Feature Selection in High Dimensional Space is a combinatory optimization problem with an NP-hard nature. Meta-heuristic searching with embedding information theory-based criteria in the fitness function for selecting the relevant features is used widely in current feature selection algorithms. However, the increase in the dimension of the solution space leads to a high computational cost and risk of convergence. In addition, sub-optimality might occur due to the assumption of a certain length of the optimal number of features. Alternatively, variable length searching enables searching within the variable length of the solution space, which leads to more optimality and less computational load. The literature contains various meta-heuristic algorithms with variable length searching. All of them enable searching in high dimensional problems. However, an uncertainty in their performance exists. In order to fill this gap, this article proposes a novel framework for comparing various variants of variable length-searching meta-heuristic algorithms in the application of feature selection. For this purpose, we implemented four types of variable length meta-heuristic searching algorithms, namely VLBHO-Fitness, VLBHO-Position, variable length particle swarm optimization (VLPSO) and genetic variable length (GAVL), and we compared them in terms of classification metrics. The evaluation showed the overall superiority of VLBHO over the other algorithms in terms of accomplishing lower fitness values when optimizing mathematical functions of the variable length type.

Streszczenie:
This meta-analysis quantitatively summarized the developmental influence and the effects of locomotor experience as well as the benefits of locomotor practice, locomotor assistance, and active searching patterns on children's search performance. Based on specific criteria, a search of a database and reference lists identified 19 studies, including 1,029 children (510 boys and 519 girls) from 4 to 144 months of age. Outcome measures of spatial performance were converted to 83 effect sizes that reflected the effects of specific experimental characteristics. Analyses of variance indicated that with older children, locomotor activities are more important to their spatial searching. Locomotor status, searching patterns, locomotor assistance, test conditions, and test reliability were identified as moderator variables. In addition, locomotor training significantly improved children's spatial search. The results supported the hypothesis that children's development of spatial search skills is influenced by locomotor experience.

Streszczenie:
Essentially, the solution to an attribute reduction problem can be viewed as a reduct searching process. Currently, among various searching strategies, meta-heuristic searching has received extensive attention. As a new emerging meta-heuristic approach, the forest optimization algorithm (FOA) is introduced to the problem solving of attribute reduction in this study. To further improve the classification performance of selected attributes in reduct, an ensemble framework is also developed: firstly, multiple reducts are obtained by FOA and data perturbation, and the structure of those multiple reducts is symmetrical, which indicates that no order exists among those reducts; secondly, multiple reducts are used to execute voting classification over testing samples. Finally, comprehensive experiments on over 20 UCI datasets clearly validated the effectiveness of our framework: it is not only beneficial to output reducts with superior classification accuracies and classification stabilities but also suitable for data pre-processing with noise. This improvement work we have performed makes the FOA obtain better benefits in the data processing of life, health, medical and other fields.

It has become increasingly difficult to locate relevant information on the Web, even with the help of Web search engines. Two approaches to addressing the low precision and poor presentation of search results of current search tools are studied: meta-search and document categorization. Meta-search engines improve precision by selecting and integrating search results fromgeneric or domain-specific Web search engines or other resources. Document categorization promises better organization and presentation of retrieved results. This article introduces MetaSpider, a meta-search engine that has real-time indexing and categorizing functions. We report in this paper the major components of MetaSpider and discuss related technical approaches. Initial results of a user evaluation study comparing Meta- Spider, NorthernLight, and MetaCrawler in terms of clustering performance and of time and effort expended show that MetaSpider performed best in precision rate, but disclose no statistically significant differences in recall rate and time requirements. Our experimental study also reveals that MetaSpider exhibited a higher level of automation than the other two systems and facilitated efficient searching by providing the user with an organized, comprehensive view of the retrieved documents.

Streszczenie:
Objectives: The EZSCAN is a non-invasive device that, by evaluating sweat gland function, may detect subjects with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The aim of the study was to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis including studies assessing the performance of the EZSCAN for detecting cases of undiagnosed T2DM. Methodology/Principal findings: We searched for observational studies including diagnostic accuracy and performance results assessing EZSCAN for detecting cases of undiagnosed T2DM. OVID (Medline, Embase, Global Health), CINAHL and SCOPUS databases, plus secondary resources, were searched until March 29, 2017. The following keywords were utilized for the systematic searching: type 2 diabetes mellitus, hyperglycemia, EZSCAN, SUDOSCAN, and sudomotor function. Two investigators extracted the information for meta-analysis and assessed the quality of the data using the Revised Version of the Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Accuracy Studies (QUADAS-2) checklist. Pooled estimates were obtained by fitting the logistic-normal random-effects model without covariates but random intercepts and using the Freeman-Tukey Arcsine Transformation to stabilize variances. Heterogeneity was also assessed using the I2 measure. Four studies (n = 7,720) were included, three of them used oral glucose tolerance test as the gold standard. Using Hierarchical Summary Receiver Operating Characteristic model, summary sensitivity was 72.0% (95%CI: 60.0%– 83.0%), whereas specificity was 56.0% (95%CI: 38.0%– 74.0%). Studies were very heterogeneous (I2 for sensitivity: 79.2% and for specificity: 99.1%) regarding the inclusion criteria and bias was present mainly due to participants selection. Conclusions: The sensitivity of EZSCAN for detecting cases of undiagnosed T2DM seems to be acceptable, but evidence of high heterogeneity and participant selection bias was detected in most of the studies included. More studies are needed to evaluate the performance of the EZSCAN for undiagnosed T2DM screening, especially at the population level.

As in many other applications, the rapid proliferation and unrestricted Web-based publishing of health-related content have made finding pertinent and useful healthcare information increasingly difficult. Although the development of healthcare information retrieval systems such as medical search engines and peer-reviewed medical Web directories has helped alleviate this information and cognitive overload problem, the effectiveness of these systems has been limited by low search precision, poor presentation of search results, and the required user search effort. To address these challenges, we have developed a domain-specific meta-search tool called Cancer Spider. By leveraging post-retrieval document clustering techniques, this system aids users in querying multiple medical data sources to gain an overview of the retrieved documents and locating answers of high quality to a wide spectrum of health questions. The system presents the retrieved documents to users in two different views: (1) Web pages organized by a list of key phrases, and (2) Web pages clustered into regions discussing different topics on a two-dimensional map (self-organizing map). In this paper, we present the major components of the Cancer Spider system and a user evaluation study designed to evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of our approach. Initial results comparing Cancer Spider with NLM Gateway, a premium medical search site, have shown that they achieved comparable performances measured by precision, recall, and F-measure. Cancer Spider required less user searching time, fewer documents that need to be browsed, and less user effort.

Medical decision-making requires a rigorous and up-to-date synthesis of research data. Systematic reviews (SR) and meta-analyses (MA) are the most rigorous method for producing these syntheses. Cochrane is an independent international organization whose mission is to produce and disseminate systematic reviews. We have performed RS and MA Cochrane on three chronic diseases in dermatology. Our objective was threefold: to produce a rigorous synthesis of the data, to propose ways of improving future research in these fields and finally to open up to meta-research projects. The first review aimed to evaluate the efficacy and tolerance of treatments for palmoplantarpustulosis, a chronic inflammatory disease characterized by the presence of pustules on palms and plants. We included 36 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that encompassed a total of 1,504 patients. Overall, we found that the topical analogue of vitamin D (maxacalcitrol) was more effective than placebo in the short term; alitretinoin and three biological treatments (etanercept (anti TNF), ustekinumab (anti IL17-IL23) and guselkumab (anti IL23)) were no more effective than placebo (low degree of certainty); and secukinumab (anti IL17) was superior to placebo (moderate degree of certainty). In this first review, we observed a situation where no evidence was found for the main treatments (local corticosteroids, phototherapy, acitretin, methotrexate, and cyclosporine) used. Network meta-analysis is a statistical method for determining the relative effectiveness of all treatments, including comparisons that have not been evaluated in an RCT. This method was applied in the following two reviews. The objective of the second review was to evaluate the efficacy and relative safety of suppressive treatment with acyclovir, valaciclovir or famciclovir in genital herpes in the immunocompetent subject. We included 26 RCTs with a total of 6,950 patients. The results showed that acyclovir, famciclovir and valaciclovir reduced the risk of having at least one recurrence of genital herpes under treatment compared to placebo. The network meta-analysis revealed no statistically significant differences between treatments. No conclusions on adverse reactions could be drawn due to the poor quality of their description. The lack of direct comparison, the absence of the most relevant judgment criteria for patients, the risk of high and unclear bias in a majority of trials and a heterogeneity whose causes could not be explored alter the relevance and level of confidence in the results. The objective of the third review was to evaluate the efficacy and relative tolerance of systemic treatments for moderate to severe psoriasis in adults. We included 109 trials for a total of 39,882 patients. Seventy-four of these trials were included in the network meta-analysis. This study showed that ixekizumab was the best treatment. (versus placebo: RR 32.45, 95% CI 23.61 to 44.60; (high certainty), followed by secukinumab (high certainty), then brodalumab (moderate certainty), then guselkumab (moderate certainty), certolizumab (moderate certainty), and ustekinumab (high certainty). In this third review, the number of trials allowed us to conduct a network meta-analysis and classify the treatments. However, a number of points decreased the degree of confidence in the results: the few face-to-face trials, few trials evaluating and reporting on quality of life, the absence of long-term short evaluation and the inclusion of a selected population. These three reviews highlighted recurrent biases that could be applied to other chronic dermatological diseases, including the lack of face-to-face testing, primarily short term evaluations, and the lack of reports including a quality of life criterion. This work also provides guidance for future trials in these three areas in terms of comparisons to be made and bias to be avoided

For the past few years Chinese market has developed rapidly. Consequently, learning Chinese has gained much attention. In addition e-learning has become another way of learning, so the way to study Chinese through e-learning has already quite popular. But most Chinese learning websites on the Internet only offer Chinese example sentences that are collected in advance, so the quantity is quite limited, and very difficult to upgrade frequently. They support keyword search, but are unable to consider both the order of the keywords in the example sentences or the tone of the sentences (for example telling sentence, asking sentence or exclaiming sentences). In order to solve the above-mentioned problems, our research utilizes the characteristic of Meta-search, using Google to searching webpages which include keywords with Google, and then according to the setting which the user inquired about, for example the order of the words in the sentence and tone of the sentence, to sieve the example sentence from those web pages. The eligible example sentences are then sent to users. Because the content of the Internet grows up rapidly and continuously, through the practice of this research we can offer more example sentences to users to improve the user's results of learning performance.

This thesis aims to study the searching behaviors and results of different learner’s ability of meta-cognition on WebQuest and Yahoo search engine. Two classes’ students at 5th grade of elementary school were invited. All the learners have to pretest the questionnaire of meta-cognition before experiment. The experimental group carries on web searching activities using WebQuest and control group carries on web searching activities by the Yahoo search engine. Both learners of two groups have to utilize their websites to answer the searching task designed by the researcher. The statistics methods of product-moment correlation, two-way analysis of variance, independent-samples t test, and sequential analysis were conducted to analyze the data. The results showed that the learners with higher degree of evaluation have the better searching results than the learners with lower degree of evaluation when they used the WebQuest in web searching activities. As for the learners with high ability of meta-cognition have the better searching results than the learners with low ability of meta-cognition when they used the Yahoo searching engine in web searching activities.

Streszczenie:
Multiple rankings of same object based on multiple criteria poses a problem of choice to rank that object at a position closest to all the rankings. Choosing a ranking for a list of such objects ranked previously is called rank aggregation. The aggregated ranking is analysed by computing the Kendall tau distance or Spearman Footrule distance. The ranking chosen by minimizing Spearman Footrule distance, is NP-Hard even if number of ranking lists greater than four for partial lists. In context of World Wide Web, the results generated by the multiple search engines may be collected together and an aggregated result can be produced using rank aggregation methods or in simple words the meta-search engine comes into existence. However, the use of existing search engines reveal that none of them have been effective in generating the results up to the quality and reliability desired by the end user, the reason being many. The application of fuzzy logic techniques to minimize the aggregated Spearman Footrule distance obtained from rank aggregation when applied in meta-searching have been studied at length, and the improvements in the existing Shimura’s technique, viz. Enhanced Shimurasquare and Enhanced Shimura-sqrt have been proposed to achieve the extent that is better to Borda’s Method, a benchmark for comparison of aggregated rankings as well the other common techniques. In addition, the improvements in existing heuristics based positional methods have also been proposed. A new heuristics have also been put forward for future work. A series of experiments on real and benchmark data have been conducted to validate the proposed improvements. The platform used for experimentation was matlab framework. A comparative analysis of the previous and the proposed rank aggregation methods on six search engines and twenty one search queries have been presented. The different aggregation methods have been compared on the basis of aggregate spearman footrule distances. The computation time have also been measured and reported. It has been revealed by the experiments that our proposed soft computing method, Enhanced Shimura Square performs best in terms of effective performance and computational efficiency.

Traversing from the rapidly urbanising county-level city of Fuqing to the remote mountainous kingdom of Lesotho in Southern Africa, Searching for Sweetness is one of the first and most extensive ethnographies linking rural-to-urban migration in China with Chinese migration to Africa. Against the backdrop of China’s national struggle for modernity and globalisation, Sarah Hanisch examines Chinese migrant women’s complex and ever-shifting struggles for upward social mobility across different generations and localities in China and Lesotho. Embedding the women’s individual portraits into larger historical contexts, Hanisch illustrates how these women interpret and narrate their migratory and everyday experiences through and beyond powerful state meta-narratives on ‘sweetness’ and ‘bitterness’. In her exploration of migratory identities and projects which have been overlooked by previous studies, Hanisch brings uniquely gendered, multi-sited, and intergenerational perspectives to existing scholarship on Chinese internal and international migration.

Streszczenie:
The identity perspective first emerged in the international relations (IR) literature in the late 1980s and early 1990s as a result of two overlapping trends. First, the postmodern Zeitgeist encouraged the questioning of accepted and “naturalized” categories associated with modernity. Embracing diversity and committed to an agenda of emancipation, postmodern thinking was to bring about the “death of meta-narratives” and to unravel assumptions which had come to be taken for granted and justified with, for instance, the need for parsimony. In IR, this meant “fracturing and destabilizing the rationalist/positivist hegemony,” including its ontology of the international system, to establish a new perspective on world politics. The readiness to do so was aided, second, by the end of the Cold War and changing structures of governance. The dissolution of seemingly stable political entities such as the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia raised questions about the volatility of borders, loyalties, nationalism(s), and the ability to manipulate them. Simultaneously, the phenomenon of “globalization” and processes of European integration undermined the conception of the Westphalian state as the fixed/dominant entity in world politics. Against this backdrop, many IR scholars searching for new conceptual vocabulary turned to “identity” to highlight the socially constructed nature of the state and its interests, and to explain the causes of war and the conditions for peace.

Streszczenie:
Evidence-based medicine (EBM) is defined as ‘The judicious use of the best current evidence in making decisions about the care of individual patients’. Evidence-based medicine (EBM) is meant to integrate clinical expertise with the best available research evidence and patient values. The purpose of EBM is to assist clinicians in making the best decisions. Practising EBM includes asking an answerable, well-defined clinical question, searching for information, critically appraising information retrieved, extracting data, synthesizing data, and making conclusions about the overall effect. The clinical question includes information of the following elements: the population, the intervention, and the clinically relevant outcomes in focus. The clinical question is a tool to make the focus of the question clearer, and an aid to build the following search strategy. A comprehensive and reproducible literature search is essential for conducting a high-quality and up-to-date search. The search should include all relevant clinical databases. Papers retrieved after the search must be critically appraised and evaluated for the risk of bias. Evidence-based methods are used in the production of systematic reviews, and the development of clinical guidelines. Whether a meta-analysis should be performed depends on the quality and nature of the extracted data. Practising EBM may be challenged by a lack of well-performed trials, various types of bias (including publication bias), and heterogeneity between existing trials. Several tools have been constructed to help the process; examples are the CONSORT statement, the PRISMA statement, and the AGREE instrument.

Streszczenie:
There is an important relationship between how thorough and unbiased the search for relevant data is and the validity of the resulting meta-analysis. Many reviewers fail to uncover citations to documents relevant to their project because of inadequate search tools or strategies. This chapter covers literature searching and information retrieval, as well as the application of study selection (inclusion) criteria. Best practices include carrying out an initial scoping study to assess how much literature is available and whether a systematic review and meta-analysis are possible; developing an explicit search protocol which details exactly how you will go about searching the literature; and outlining clear study selection criteria so that the reasons for inclusion or exclusion of studies are transparent.

Streszczenie:
This chapter first presents two figures to summarize the entire meta-analytic process. The first covers Part I, the initial stage of formulating a question and systematically searching the primary literature for suitable studies. The second covers Part II, the stage at which you extract data from publications, run statistical tests, and present and interpret your results. The two figures explicitly link each step to the relevant chapters. However, readers must be aware that the exact content of the activities in each box in the figures can vary considerably among meta-analyses. The remainder of the chapter provides a short description of what each step involves and tips based on the authors' personal experiences.

Streszczenie:
Automatic music genre classification is the problem of associating mutually-exclusive labels to audio tracks. This process fosters the organization of collections and facilitates searching and marketing music. One approach for automatic music genre classification is to use diverse vector representations for each track, and then classify them individually. After that, a majority voting system can be used to infer a single label to the whole track. In this work, we evaluated the impact of changing the majority voting system to a meta-classifier. The classification results with the meta-classifier showed statistically significant improvements when related to the majority-voting classifier. This indicates that the higher-level information used by the meta-classifier might be relevant for automatic music genre classification.

Streszczenie:
Review question / Objective: Erector spinae plane block (ESPB) has been employed in arthroscopic shoulder surgery (ASS) as an alternative novel interfacial plane block. However, its analgesic efficacy is still controversial. Whether ESPB could improve analgesic efficacy in ASS is what the current meta-analysis seeks to find out. Information sources: We searched different databases including the Cochrane Library, PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science from inception to November 29, 2022, using medical subject headings (MeSH) and free-text terms without language restrictions. The primary purpose of searching was for the selection of RCTs for meta-analysis but also to avoid unplanned duplication and compare reported review methods from other systematic reviews. The following search terms were used for the search of each database: “arthroscopic shoulder surgery”, “shoulder surgery”, “total shoulder arthroplasty”, “shoulder arthroscopy”, and “erector spinae plane block”, “erector spinae muscle”. We also searched for grey literature by supplementary hand searching.

Review question / Objective: Efficacy of Acupuncture for ovulatory disorder infertility: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of randomized controlled trials. Condition being studied: Those who do not have contraception after marriage, have a normal sexual life, and cohabitation for 1 year without pregnancy are called infertility, and those who have no history of pregnancy are called primary infertility. Those with a history of previous pregnancy are called secondary infertility. Infertility is a global reproductive health problem that affects about 10% of married women. Ovulatory infertility ranked second only to fallopian tube abnormalities in the proportion of all infertility, accounting for 25%-30%. Ovulation induction drugs are commonly used in western medicine, but long-term use often causes side effects such as follicular hyperstimulation. Modern clinical studies have shown that traditional Chinese medicine and acupuncture have good effects on follicle development and ovulation induction, with few side effects. This article systematically reviews the clinical efficacy of acupuncture and moxibustion in the treatment of ovulatory infertility by searching the clinical research literature and conducting Meta-analysis, so as to provide an evidence-based basis for clinical decision-making.
